PROJECT PROPOSAL

Situation: There is always that one component/part etc. that you need to somehow replicate but you’re either clumsy at drawing blueprints or don’t have the drawings at all? Perhaps it’s an old part that is no longer being produced or is something you can’t afford and you want to make it yourself. Other techniques such as reverse engineering, takes up time and money and you also have a probability in forming errors in your work.

Brief: To design make and appraise a suitable but efficient artifact in which anyone can easily operate to reproduce fairly accurate and detailed three dimensional objects by manipulating a simple camera and a line laser, this 3D object can be then able converted into an STL file in which it can be saved and used to print out on the 3D Printer or other CNC Machinery.

Defining the Design Situation:Like previously stated above I always came across a need for an item/small parts when working on other projects. For example from my last project I had to re-verse engineer a chassis for my RC car, which took a long time and cost me a lot of re-trials. By designing and constructing a high quality, interactive easy to use 3D scanner in whicheffectively and critically utilises mechanisms and electronics within the artefact and is aesthetically pleasing will solve the problem of tedious, trial and error re-verse engineering techniques.

Context:Own Project

Functions:

Primary – One of the main functions the primary function is to try and target and focus on successfully and efficiently constructing a fairly accurate and low budget 3D Scanner with the use of just any sort of webcam camera “or apple device” and a moderately strong 30mw line laser. Then with the help of free software (David3dscaning) ‘or paid option’ interprets the laser projection into a three dimensional figure where then can be saved as a STL file for 3D printing or other CNC uses or animation multimedia use.

Secondary – Now our Secondary main functions is to offcourse to try and deliberately achieve a practical or aesthetical effect but also taking into considerations some aspects like: the objects safety, its relative height, weight and size (Not to heavy that the user cant re-locate the artefact as people like to portably carry it to different areas) athletically pleasing to the eye and if in the case agronomical or Anthropometrical pleasing to everyone. Also in this task we try to critically aim to create something easy to handle and use but probably, interactive that utilise mechanism and electronics in which will increase everyone’s cognitive development and open imagination.

Specifications: Must not use materials which are likely to catch fire

easily, give dangerous fumes, or melt during normal use. Must meet the conditions and considerations set on page 1 Encouraged to use CNC machinery. Wires should be kept discrete/out of any moving mechanism. Materials and devices should meet workplace health and

safety act. The time period of which the assessment much meet due dates

given on page 1 Consider the length, width and height Coats of pain or material/substances should be Non-toxic Advised to include simple or complex mechanism and mechanics

and also an electronic system if possible

Constraints: Must fit in a 1mx1mx1m Construction of the this project (3D Scanner) needs to be

finished within the allocated time frame $60 school provision cost? And unlimited cost for own costs

Considerations: - How is it going to sit or stand- How are the joints going to hold, does it need glue- Safe no sharp edges- Aesthetically pleasing - No loose wires or electrical components

- No toxic glues or paints - Electronics safely covered - Expertise – The level of expertise isn’t as high as a person

who is employed to design and construct industry and community 3D Scanners or such other CNC machinery

- Tools and machinery – Perhaps the 3D Scanner cannot be constructed at home because the needed tools are not provided

- The Job must be able to withstand some forces the durabilityof it must be reasonable enough

- Finishing product must be secure everything fixed bolts screws tightened

- The size must be easy for the user to handle, manipulate andcontrol the machinery

- The size must be easy for the child to handle, manipulateand control the artefact

- Have to create my own rotating turn table or AKA Lazy Susan

Safety In the workshop and safety in general:

1.Make sure when using machine that there should be only one person using it

2.Do not distract others while that person is working on theirJob to avoid distractions and accidents from occurring.

3.Always make sure you have a clean area to work with, to avoid accidents or injuries to yourself or others around youin the workshop.

4.Always wear safety glasses, equipment while on machinery orhand tools to protect your eyes and body from flying projectiles or particles in the air or area

5.Never run around to place to place or just run around in general in the workshop as it is dangerous to yourself and others if an accident were to occur such as slipping or bumping other work mates.

6.Take into consideration of materials used on your job that the material or example paint isn’t flammable or toxic.

7.Always remember to wear closed in shoes to protect your feetfrom falling objects and sharp materials that are left on the ground.

8.When finished with equipment, tools and your job make sure to put away to avoid a messy work environment which could possibly lead to accidents and misplacements.

9.Make sure to never leave an ‘CNC Machinery’ example: the laser cutter unattended when in use, to prevent any possiblehazards/problem that could occur.

10. Always follow the set instruction for the use of any CNC Machinery, (Instruction could have been set from a manual orsimply teachers or supervisors that have set them)

11. Always ask for supervision if unsure what to do with any machinery

12. Take into consideration of live wires or exposed hazards’ areas, these should always be covered up and kept hard to get to.

13. All sides and edges of the job should be kept relatively clean and not sharp, (NOTE: there shouldn’t be any areas of the finished job that caused harm)

Ideation Sketches:

ITEM GOOD POINTS BAD POINTS OPINION

Idea 1 Appendix 1

Battery poweredportable PhoneCharger (Solar

Powered)

This particular design provides controls such as switches for on and off charging led light indicators.

It is small and compact for easy use of portability and easy storage.

Different plug inoutlets for different phones this means other phones with different types of phone connection cords can be connected.

There are many different ways ofhousing for this particular project. It can be either laser cut or assembled having your own unique style of touch to it for aesthetics this will also ensure all electrical components insideare more secure. It can also be 3DPrinted producingthe same results,or just recycle by using some storage containers which wouldn’t be as

With the simplicity ofthis project I can easily finish this project in a matter of a day. It incorporates very little ingenuity to what I’m aiming for.

Some electrical parts might be expensive and some parts might have to be bought onlinewhich arrivals willvary.

Making sure the housing is all sealedfrom any contact of any substances. It also must be preferablylight or justnot to heavy (safety procedures)

All components inside the housing must be secure in case of accidents/ if

Overall my opinion on the Battery poweredportable phone charger is thatit shows very little ingenuity for ayear 12 technology studies projectstandards. A. It has little mechanical or electrical aspects to it that criticallydemonstrates myknowledge aboutmaterials and my ability to utilise and processes technology. However it isn’t a bad idea as and there are some positive pointsof this project. It’s very cost efficient, portable and easy to build. All the aspectsthat 21 centurymarketing aim for. There is minimal safety consideration unlike some other projects however certainthings like positioning of components and

electronics inside the housing must beconsidered.

Idea 2 Appendix 2

Rotating lazy Suzancharging table (Tocharge any phonedevices)

Certainly interesting design. It doesn’t look too hard to constructbecause of the helpful use of the ‘3D Printing technology’ I candesign the individual parts on the Maker Bot or the new Form 1if that arrives.

The rotating LazySusan feature provides some aesthetical appearance.

More than one device can be charged at once, and also there isno need to plug any cords or connections (however a special phone case needs to be incorporated)

A big issue for this project is that, in order for thephone to be charged without any connection cords it requires a special case (bought online or reverse engineering)

With this sort of new technology emerging in the technologicalculture today, there aren’t much electrical components around to buyor scrap. This means using the internet or eBay to find parts needs

A great design project which highlights the key factors of ingenuity as it shows a lot of in-depth knowledge and process before the finish product. It’s Interactive and very practical as it doesn’t require any connection cordshowever a special phone case needs to beplaced on the phone before using in order for the chargingmatt to work. The design its self is aesthetically appealing, and yes it’s relatively easy to construct andassemble and allows multiple users to be ableto use this charging table. Wires of mechanism are

to be taken into consideration

easily concealedand there is a low safety hazard consideration, that’s if wired and assembled properly.

Idea 3 Appendix 33D Scanner

This design provides a range of interactive mechanism and electronics such as: LED lighting enabled when the artefact is in process, computer processing, and software editing. With the ability of converting the 3D object in STL file, the 3D printer can be incorporated

This project highlights the standards of year 12 or better ingenuity and focuses on a lot of knowledge and understanding.

A lot of safety implication such as housing and concealing wires and mechanism. Parts need to be safely secure within the housing, for relocationof the scanner

Problems with parts such as lasers (Line lasers are hard to find, ordering is a main option) making a turn table requiresa (a slow motor)

Overall this project could prove to be a challenge but isa great option because of its potential and opportunity for in-depth knowledge and reasoning, the ability of introducing effective and critical use of mechanisms and electronics within the overall project. It ticks all theboxes for a year12 standard project which indicate a good choice of a project.

Idea 4 Appendix 4

Fiberglass takedown Re-curve Bow

This design looksvery aesthetically appealing with the help of designing blue prints (Autodesk)you can produce abeautiful custom riser (Handle)

Since this is a takedown bow, youare able to re-move or re-place

Unfortunatelythis project is classifiedas a weapon meaning this artefact solution wouldn’t be acceptable anyway as weapon or weapon like artefacts will not be allowed in

Overall my opinion on the fiberglass takedown re-curve bow is that it would definitely be an interesting and aesthetically pleasing project however, it demonstrates virtually

the limbs and store it away.

Unlike normal bows if the limbsbreak you have little chance of fixing the bow, resulting in buying a new bow, however the fiberglass takedown re-curvebow is able to replace the fiberglass limbs.

Different limbs can vary the drawweight of the bow(the more fiberglass layersor the less re-curve means a higher draw weight vice versa) Easy components and essentials can be salvaged of other toys andparts.

Optional sight orarrow rest are able to be created and attached to the bow design for more efficient use.

The waterproofingthe timber tominimise tarnishing and erosion, keeping the timber strongand healthy.

little or no effective and critical use ofmechanisms and electronics, with no use of these aspects in the design lacks ingenuityand the abilityto express the capabilities ofthe knowledge and understanding of technology and materials. Also another reason why thisisn’t a suitable project solution because weaponsor weapon like object will notbe constructed because it willbreach safety issues for the user. All in all project need to meet health safety considerations, and the brief.

Idea 5 Appendix 5

Wooden Jewellery box

If designed properly exhausting all resources such as

Shows very little use of mechanisms

This design wouldn’t be a great year 12 own project

3D printer, laser cutter and/or router this artefact solution could come out to be very stable andaesthetically appealing.

The use of different materials such as acrylic will enhance the aesthetic appeal towards this design

Having a stain varnish finish or oil finish will look beautiful in the finish process

Strong because of the wooden material used as well as the frame used to hold together the artefact

Having the option to use the Laser cutter gives option to intricate etching designs for a great aesthetic style

Depending on your style this design can be created in many different shapes and sizes to the users

and no electronics

Depending onyour manufacturing skill, it might be challenging when applying my expertise ofthe interiorof the jewellery box. Attaching mirrors, soft vinyl material etc.

Not every interactive or engaging or year 12 standards of‘Technology Studies, more like the art of manufacturing/industrialwork’

solution because it lacks any advance ‘Technological features’ mechanism, electrical and components. Thedesign doesn’t really capture ingenuity and isn’t really engaging. It would also costmore to make itthen to buy a beautiful cheaper versionat the markets or some sale.

Investigated Client Requirements:ITEM GOOD POINTS BAD POINTS OPINIONIdea 1 Appendix 6 (RC)

3D Laser Scanner(Turning Table)

With the need ofre-verse engineering and prototyping these days, having a cheap and efficient 3DScanner which scans objects and produces three dimensional objects and thenhave the option to export the save file as a STL file for 3D Printing would improve efficiency and cut down on time, but yet produce an aesthetic outcome.

Useful in today’s technological culture, increases everyone’s cognitive thinking as it explores

Making sure all wires andmoving mechanism areconcealed andwell hidden to prevent accidents.

Finding a slow motor proved to difficult taking into considerationof cost

If the line laser or the webcam camerais moved out of place or isn’t alignedanymore, the outcome of the scan willfail because it needs to be calibratedin a certain distance and angle to the object.

Finding a

Overall this own project solution design is very aesthetically appealing and alsodoes not lack the capabilities to enhance users designing enjoyment and cognitive designing and creativity. Because it offers a large range of interactive systems for example by introducing a rotating table forthe object to lie,the laser will be able to capture the full 3D objectwithout stop starting and fiddling. Also by wiring up your ownline laser with the right strength, will produce a more accurate, detailedand aesthetic outcome.

creativity, creativity is limitless

Certain parts can be easily salvaged off broken equipmentexample a small motor for the turning table can be scarped from old rotisserie kit left at home.

A wide range andvariety of moving controlled mechanisms and components, the use of software interfaces and application (3D Scanning apps onapple devices) there are countless possible ideas to enhance this machines performances

non-illegal line laser diode module will be near impossible tofind in such a rural area. This must be purchased online, this is a problem because of arrival time of the parts will hinder constructing schedules.

Despite all that it conflicts with time and money, because of shortage of certain parts no doubt that this task will be very tedious and complex, also money would come into the factor ascertain componentshave to be bought online or salvagedor made

Idea 2 Appendix 7 (Flatpack)

Calliper and ruler(Autodesk Inventor

Despite using asimple 3D scan of an object, being able to hand/manually measure and design your jobwill give the user more access to software editing programs

Very cheap all you need is a ruler or a

This design and the outcome of this could orwouldn’t be as aestheticallyappealing andaccurate as other methods

In order to draw your designs 3D for other uses such as printing means buying

This option is the approach of most schools that house Technology Studies, also a lot Universitiesetc. encourage and use softwaredrawing programswhich focuses inmanually designing and then sketching 3D objects on ‘AutoCAD’ like software.

calliper, and some drawing paper or some good software and patience

Very interactive andengaging

a license fora good drawing software suchas Autodesk Inventor or AutoCAD Etc. this will prove costly

This capturing option is extremely tedious and has lots of room for error and retrials lotsof prototyping

Overall this is a good option for manipulating3D objects, however isn’t always the most efficient and easy option because it’s very costly and time consuming.

Idea 3 Appendix 8 (Any sortof type of board game)

3D Structured LightScanner

Taking a similarapproach to 3D laser scanning this 3D Capturing technology takesa similar but different approach, by projecting structured lighton the object instead of a direct line laser, this way produces a more accurate and amazing finish.

Able to scan objects as 10 cent pieces showing all the precise detail. Option export file as an STL file for 3D Printing or other CNC or multimedia uses

Isn’t very affordable (around $1000 or more)

By designingand creatingyour own will prove difficult asthe main part the special project is expensive. Also this approach needs two cameras to capture the lighting.

Yes this design offers precise and efficient results and demonstrates sophisticated ingenuity. However it wouldn’t be practical because of the cost of the parts of building this project the overall electrical aspects in assembling this. Also this approach needs aspecial source of software to manipulate the data, which is expensive to getthe full experience (then

free option)

Idea 4 Appendix 9 (Remotecontrol)

Sculpting/3D Claymodelling

Easy to use andmanipulate, it is also inexpensive andcan be easily bought at most hobby stores/art stores.

Depending on your patience and expertise in hand work designing, the results can be Atheistically pleasing

Can easily add or take away features effectively

Can be harden to ensure more durability and can be manipulated to any size

The user is more interactive when sculpting their designs, it’s very involving and overall increases cognitive thinking and

For inexperiencesculptures’ it can be complex to design and create, because of the lack of expertise.

Very time consuming

One problem with this solution is the durability of the finish design. It can easily break if knocked over, these results in the break ofsome safety regulations.

There is a lack of ingenuity and strong demonstration of the ability to express the capabilitiesof the knowledge and

Overall in all honest this would be the worst solution for this projectas it fails to meet the brief requirements. One of the main issues of this design is it lacks creative ingenuity, the chance of communicating myknowledge and understanding ofsophisticated electronics and mechanics. Another reason why this wouldn’t be practical is it becomes extremely messy, and most people these days are more in pursuit of easier but efficient options.

This option would prove to be tedious and complex for inexperience users all in allis very unpractical

use of material understanding of technology, (mechanism and electronics)and materials

May become very messy after awhile

Research Idea analysis with Justification : Based on all the analysis and investigations in each and different natures, andstyles of creative own choice designs specially in the 3D scanning section, I’ve come to the conclusion that the 3D Laser scanner (turning table) was the best solution because it looks aesthetically appealing also produces aesthetical and accurate models and this particular design provides a vase range of mechanical or electrical aspects to it that critically demonstrates myknowledge about materials and my ability to utilise and processes technology, for example by creating my own turn table, the object sits on the platform which rotates a full 360 degrees resulting on the line laser hitting all faces of the artefact producing a full object without stop starting and fiddling. Also by removing an old resisting low powered laser diode module from its casing and replacing the diode module with a more efficient and stronger (line)laser in which enhances the overall efficiency of the outcome is a great example of utilising technology. Overall this is great because it gives the user a more reliable and easy to use technological tool to use with his or hersdesigning and manufacturing. As it is designed to scan objects and produce a 3Dimage this tool is a Pandora’s Box with limitless uses in result definitely enhance the excitement and engagement between the artefact and its user becauseit provides control which increases cognitive thinking. With further research about 3D scanning I came across 3D scanning with apple iPhones. In today’s society phones are very reliable in everyday use, but an application on the apple store called Moedels is software which can be used for 3D scanning with conjunction of a line laser and a turning table, it’s very easy to use and produces a great three dimensional finish of whatever object you were scanning. There are various moveable parts. The turn table could be controlled via micro processing AKA Via Pickaxe which broadens the range of the capabilities to whatthis artefact can do. With a flick of a switch the line laser and the turning table could turn on with the use of micro-processing controls. The shape is aesthetically appealing as it reveals lots of mechanism and electronics. It also meets a more modern and up to date technology solution. Although it could

be difficult to construct, I feel obliged to use the expertise and skills I have and learn throughout the process of this design. Perhaps further research in Three-Dimensional Scanning will enhance my knowledge and understand of the mechanisms and components within these artefacts. Although I’m an open minded person I know there are more solutions and creative designs that I can work with but overall this design solution is the best for its diversity and visual appeal enhance and critical engagement in mechanisms and electronics.

The second best design solution was the 3D Structured Light Scanner, exactly like the 3D Laser Scanner it promises a vase range of mechanical or electrical aspects to it that critically demonstrates my knowledge about materials and my ability to utilise and processes technology controls which could also be controlled via Micro-processor if programed to. However with this solution, it is more complex and costly as it requires expensive parts such as two cameras and a structured light projector. I also chose this to be the second best solution because it meets all the requirements sufficient amount of interactivemechanisms and electronics that increase cognitive thinking, but again the downsides of this is it would prove to be one of the most complex designs to manufacture and assemble together with all the mechanisms and wiring, my level of expertise just wouldn’t cut it, and time wouldn’t be in my favour when ordering parts.

The third and least good designs were the Calliper and ruler (Autodesk Inventor) and Sculpting/3D Clay modelling solution. The design brought my attention because they were simple but effective methods of capturing three dimensional objects and was different from the other sorts of 3D Capturing Technology. However like the opinion I stated in my analysis of the Clay sculpting, it simply isn’t practical for every person, because most people relyon a self-efficient, relatively fast and accurate tool and something not tedious and messy and produces a result that varies of your expertise. In the other hand the Calliper and ruler method was chosen to be the least valued design because there weren’t much engaging mechanisms and electronics, and onlyfocused more time in drawing and sketching then capturing 3D Object.

Stainless steel, alsoknown as inox steel or inox is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5 or 11%chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does, but despite the name it is not fully stain-proof. Stainless steel differs from carbon steel by the amount of chromium present. Stainless steels contain sufficient chromium to form a passive film of chromium oxide, whichprevents further surface corrosion andblocks corrosion fromspreading into the metal's internal structure.

Fairly strong (so if the operator put alot of pressure on the frame of the 3D Scannerhousing while moving/relocating it to a different workspace it may not break as easily)

Doesn’t rust, corrode or stain as easy as normal steel minimal tarnishing effects

Can also be easily welded

Balsa wood is very light (large cells with very thin walls), the cells arefilled with water when the tree is cut,the cells dry and leaves spaces betweenthe cells.

This sort of materialis a assembling type of wood that comes from a hardwood tree from central and south America that isvery light and soft but is not strong

The material is very light making it very easy to use and transfer from place to place

Very is to cut and designs jobsthat other material will have trouble with

The material isn’t strong at all and is easily broken if object is accidently putunder pressure, dropped or even handled roughly

The Balsa wood in my opinion is not an appropriate material touse for my particular project, because it’s too weak and may break if handled incorrectly (put under too much pressure when handled) or even when attemptingto assemble. However itis very light and is very easy to manufacture. (This sortof material would be great for a practice initial project material) AKA prototyping

Difficult to distort due to joint by smallbattens.

High-level, artistic and natural because it is made of solid wood.

Has wonderful water resistance, weather resistance, impact resistance, good bonding strength, anddoes not produce harmful gases. Because the surface is solid wood, it will not blister and delaminate after painted with oil

Finger Joints don’t look to aesthetically appealing

Finger joints honestly wouldn’t be as a great use tothis project because the materials I’m using is Ply and Acrylic, with the ply I would be cutting out small and precise shapes that just wouldn’t be suitable for a great jointing option. Finger joints don’t look aesthetically appealing really making the job look more as a quick job and simple. RC Car Ultrasonic Sensors can be introduced as one of the features of this design, because these Ultrasonic sensors or are (also known as tranceivers when they both send and receive) work on a principle similar to radar or sonar which evaluate attributes of a target by interpreting the echoes from a radio or sound waves separately. So what this means is I can use the sensors as a means to work with the Picaxe chip system. The Sensors as shown below will be mounted on the front of the RC car, in which sound waves will be distributed out to detect targets or objects ahead of the vehicle. When the waves detect any liquids, clear objects, or irregularly shaped objects. Sound waves will then be deflected and received back to the transceiver, in which Picaxe will receivea command such as to avoid the object by ‘Turning right or left so many seconds’.

Ultrasonic Sensors or Receivers

APPENDIX 41

APPENDIX 43

The Picaxe system is a new technology presented before us to us and is in which advised wisely and encouraged to use in thedevelopment and construction of this Childs Play Solution. ThePicaxe or a microcontroller is designed to be the brain of theelectronic project. It was originally designed as an educational purpose for schools, but the Picaxe system has now also been widely adopted by hundreds of thousands of hobbyists due to the fact it’s easy to use and adapt to. These Picaxe chips are popular because they are very low in cost, and simple to program using free, easy-to-learn software.

The Picaxe chip can react to input sensors and switch outputs on and off accordingly. The various different PICAXE chip sizes give great flexibility on how the system can be used - simply select the chip size as required for your project.

Programming the Picaxe Software

As you can see the Picaxe chips can be programmed in a very simple to learn basic language or via a flowchart. The programminglanguage is designed to give you all the powerful features of the system without any complicated programming language to learn.

Picaxe is much simpler to learn (and to 'debug') than traditional microcontroller languages such as assembler code or 'C'. The basic programming software is completely free, and also includes a powerful on-screen simulation for testingyour program/design.

APPENDIX 45Picaxe Chips

The use of ‘Bumper Feedback’ or bumper sensors will bea great addition to the design and manufacturing of this design because it will enhance the performance and capabilities of the RC car solution. It will perform and interact more, engage the users mind and entertainment as they seetheir ‘Toy artefact’ hitobjects and react to it,and with the use of Picaxe, wecan program the bumpersensors when it hits anobject to stop or reverse back into another direction.

Safety of the design

There are no sharp screws, edges or objects not covered up

All sharp pieces of metal and burrs are to be smoothened so that they may not cut the user

There are not going to be any wires that are revealing in which they will be concealed away and hard to get to prevent the risk of electrocution.

Appendix 30

The paint used for the surface finish is non-toxic so the user will not get poisoned from the chemicalsinside the surface finish

There are no loose small bits that a child can swallow or choke on causing a safety hazard.

Workshop Safety

When using machinery such as the new expensive CNC Machines, always present yourself in a mature and safety manor

Must have at least a general knowledge of how the machine you want to occupy works, if in doubt alwaysask for teacher assistance and guidance, before you do anything else

A professional supervisor must be supervising the procedure if it may be dangerous or cause a potential harm

Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when using machinery and in some cases in areas where needed

Make sure tools are not broken or blunt and if foundto be in possession of this in any case, student should always advice the supervisor around that time

Be wary of other around your work space and the workshop in general, assist other if needed be

‘Ground’

By Enhancing the basic structure of the design by including components such as rear and front bumper feedback sensors not only will the shape of car appeal to the user , but increases the defensive stabilityand mobility of thecar making It very aesthetically appealing

The design looks modern and interesting/admiring, creative. And now with the use ofRC and Picaxe controlled chip systems. This design can transform into not only into a Remote control car but a multi-functional interactive machinewith all these added components and electronics

With the perks of creating an RC car from scratch, RC development has become very popularand sort after hobby, making it easy to find Certain parts where

I have only alimited knowledge of creating RC vehicles, as this will be a learning journey for me as I have much small real expertise in RC mechanisms, this could prove to be adifficult task to perform well in. Because of the many factors that have to be taken into consideration.

The complexion ofthe initial design will be interesting, and very complicated as factors like wiring and programing are involved critically throughout the process

I always have

Overall in my onion Yes this design is very aesthetically appealing and it also does not lackthe capabilities to enhance our users enjoyment and entrainment, because it offers a large base rangeof interactive systems such control options ‘Picaxe’ or ‘RC’ and It also bringsthe artefact to live engaging to the as the user isinvolved into the action as he or she has to controlit, showing the bondage between the artefact and the user.

With the differentmechanism and electronic components in place, this will definitely not fail to entertain for hours.

Despite all that it conflicts with time and money, nodoubt that this task will be very tedious and complex, also money would come

it can also be easily salvaged of other RC parts to save spending money.

Adding additional drifting wheels andsteering mechanisms(incorporating Picaxe controls) and also enhancing the RC with A wide range and variety of moving controlled mechanisms and components, the useof different chips such as Picaxe, theuse of ultrasonic sensors and bumper sensors, all these electronics are contributing to thecritical entertainment of the design as thereare countless possible ideas to enhance this artefact up.

to account ofthe safety regulations this design shows for. There could be exposed wires if the body of the artefact is not well insulated it could cause asafety hazard.

Lots of time and money will be spentconstructing this task.

into the factor ascertain componentshave to be bought salvaged or made.

But in hindsight Ihave the feeling that this design will show promise if time, effort and the willingness to usean imaginative mind, is acknowledge and sacrificed , then this design will no doubt definitely award well

Yes this design will no doubt be aesthetically appealing and unique towards the user’s eyes. But with the enhancement of incorporating mechanisms such as Picaxe controls, where controls are monitored and

With certainty I acknowledge the shear potential this design has tooffer. If money, time and lack of expertise was not a factor in this design. This artefact incorporating the mechanisms, components and

This design would also have its drawback as it could cause a potential threat to an infant, as this design is more aimed at hobby/older people

‘Water’

Appendix 47RC/Picaxe controlledAir Boat ‘Water’

With the help of designing and then printing out the chassis on the 3D printer or if I’m lucky the new Form 1. This design will look very aesthetically appealing

Many different options of wider range operations such as mechanism, electronics, components and alsothe option of control ‘RC or ‘Picaxe’ controlled.

Very popular makingit easy to accumulate to accumulate components and

Creating the chassis couldprove challenging but I could get away withit by designing it on inventor and if any luck the Form1 gets here Icould use theForm 1 to my advantage. Besides that I would either have to mould it by hand or cut it on therouter or 3D printer.

Definitely proves to be a very time

My Overall my opinion of the Speed Boat/ Airboat is that byincorporating manydifferent mechanisms and electronics this would definitely be another top interesting and engaging solution as it provides a durable design if constructed properly and insulated to perfect waterproofing. This would definitely providemany hours of entertainment withthe Radio (remote)Control feature and/or Picaxe controlled system.

essentials can be salvaged of other toys and parts.

Using the components mentioned in the equipment analysis, this would definitely enhance the excitement and engagement between the artefact and its user because itprovides control which increases entertainment.

Might include remote LED lights or switches which will activate the guidance/safety lights.

Sensors and radio control could be easily useful in this design solution as it could broaden the range of interaction and enhance the leisureand entertainment significantly

and money consuming project, as it will be costly due toRC parts and mechanisms.

I have to consider insulation ofeach components plus ‘sensors’ if I am going toapply it to my design.

The waterproofingcould definitely prove difficult to do

Sharp pieces such as blades on Speed boat and Rotating objects can cause injury, this design could just prove to be dangerous or just inappropriateto youngerages

Although this certain design just like the RC Tow truck its complexity and cost of the overall appraisal come into a big factor, because ofall the mechanism and individual parts this artefact needs, Itwould also not be suitable for a younger age bracket due to small parts but there could be some way to designand manufacture this artefact to rule out the hazards with exposed parts.

All in all It is an appropriate design because it meets the brief. The Radio controlled component allows for more control and entertainment for the user. It is not the best design because of the complexity of the Radio control system as well as cost factors to appraise the artefact.

Very time consuming andmoney would probably be abig factor.

potential, but my onion for this design is, it willmost definitely bea great task to build because it meets all the requirements it’s interactive and engaging with the wide range of mechanisms and electronics and components.

However this design is just simply very complex, time and money consuming without the expertise in electronics and mechanism I would have great difficulty in making sure this design was 100% safe granted and fully workable

Investigation of preferred solution:

Best Solution:

The best solution that best meets this projects situation andbrief will have to be Appendix 17 and 1 because Based on allthe analysis and investigations in each and different natureof RC Vehicles, I’ve come to the conclusion that the RC orPicaxe controlled car was the best solution because it looksaesthetically appealing and this particular design canincorporate and provides a vase range of controls such asswitches for the lights which could also be controlled viaPicaxe if programed to. With this design, there are manydifferent components such as ultrasonic sensors, bumperfeedback sensors, and much more. With this choice of variationto choose from, this design is a great path to go with. Thisis great because if I expand the possibilities of this designand use it to the maximum efficiency, the end result wouldprove rewarding , as it will present the user with moreentertainment and freedom instead of it only limited to onething. As it is designed to be an RC Vehicle, it woulddefinitely enhance the excitement and engagement between theartefact and its user because it provides control whichincreases entertainment. This design can also incorporate theuse of ‘Bump feedback sensors’ and other sensors. There arevarious moveable parts, the steering and driving mechanism iscontrolled Via Picaxe which broadens the range of thecapabilities to what this artefact can do. The shape isaesthetically appealing as it reveals lots of mechanism andelectronics. It also meets a more modern and enhanced design.Although it would be difficult to construct, I feel obliged touse the expertise I have and attempt to learn throughout theprocess of this design. Further research in the area of RCcars will enhance my knowledge and understand of themechanisms and components within these artefacts. Overall theRC/Picaxe Car design is the best for its visual appeal and itscritical engagement in mechanisms and electronics in whichappeals to the users. With all these essentials covered thispath of a solution would be a considerable way to go with.

With the new Form 1 coming it wouldn’t be a bad idea tointroduce it to this design and use the machine asadvantage, by way of means necessary, such as printing the

frame and body from the machine as it will give the mostaccurate and aesthetic finish to it. With all different typesof programs, electronics, systems and CNC machinery at mydisposal the RC Car Design will be created to the maximumpotential.

Justification:

I was put forth with a situation that I must criticallyanalyse and come up with the best and foremost optimalsolution there is an emerging market in the 5 to 10 year oldage range for high quality interactive objects that utilisemechanisms and electronics to fuel children’s imaginations andincrease their cognitive development.

From that I formed a briefing “In which create A suitable artefact in this case a child’s toy is to be designed and constructed, to entertain the audience with the simple use of electronic systems and simple mechanism but yet still be as aesthetically appealing. ” Based on all the analysis and investigations in each anddifferent styles of Childs play solutions, I’ve come to theconclusion that the perfect solution to this will have to bean artefact that engages the minds of young/infants in thisgeneration with the contribution of mechanism, electronics, and technology to create an aesthetically appealing artefactthat will captivate our target audience, plus enhance andincreases the cognitive thinking of young adolescents. Fromthis I formed numerous amounts of investigations, and researchand sketch drawings that will best meet thebriefing/requirements and solve the situation. I will beconstructing Appendix 1-17 because it ticks all the necessaryboxes for a suitable solution.

Ranking Justification

Best SolutionIdea 1 Appendix 1(RC/Picaxe controlledCar) ‘Ground’

Appendix 17 RC/Picaxecontrolled Drift car)‘Ground’

This design is one of the best solutions as it provides an sufficient category of optional mechanisms, electronics and components that can be contributed to this design, in which will creates a substantial amount of operations that will captivate the user, and perhaps increase their cognitive thinking of today’s advance technology.

This design is also very aesthetically appealing and does not lack the capabilities to enhance the users enjoyment and entrainment, because it offers a large range of interactive base systems such control options ‘Picaxe’ or ‘RC’ and It also brings the user into the action as he or she has control , showing the bondage between the artefact and the user.

All in all I would like to spend my time wisely incorporating the many different machines and utilities that can exhaust; my construction of the plan will consist of manydifferent components that I have explained above to increase the maximum efficiency of this design. With the new form 1 coming and the use of CNC Machinery/ technology.

Second Best SolutionIdea 2 Appendix 5

Appendix 47RC/Picaxe controlled Air

Boat ‘Water’

This particular shape and design plusmaterials and fixtures used are verysimilar to the RC Car but lack someinitial components because of thescenery of which the artefact will beused.

Like my project I have chosen appendix1, as this design is great because ofits aesthetic appeal and its uniquejointing fits, instead of the usualnail or glue this is more of aninterference fit which will enable thisdesign to be taken apart like a flatpack and resembled with caution. Thereare a few materials that will go wellwith this particular lighting design

Information shownabove

like ply where you can easily useprovided machine to laser cut the plyinto the wanted piece.

This wasn’t the best design but It was close to it. (Note: at the start I initial chose the Airboat, but then when it came to the analysis and investigation of each design, I was influenced of the capabilities of the RC Car while I was surfing the net, collating information of RC’s.

Third Best SolutionIdea 2 Appendix 4

(RC/Picaxe controlledHelicopter)

Appendix 46(RC/Picaxe controlled

Helicopter)Aeroplane) ‘Air’

This design was chosen to be the third best solution because of its complexity. The individual components and wiring would indeed be challenging,as there are also many different mechanisms which could prove to be difficult to assemble. This design would be better if it was just fixed and not RC controlled.

It isn’t as engaging and superstitious as the RC Car design. As the Car designhas many different features like ultrasonic sensors, feedback bumpers and more where it could interactive with the user and get the user involvedand entertained

This isn’t really suitable for a young child to play around with as it could cause a safety issue if in any case theblade comes in contact with anyone or anything or if the child has somehow came into possession with small objectsthat can be inserted into the mouth

Being able to construct this particular

design could cost money as there is a lot of individual parts in it.

Least AppropriateSolution

Idea 3 Appendix 48RC/Picaxe controlled

Robot

‘Movable/land’

I chose this to be the least suitabledesign because it would require a greatdeal of knowledge and understanding ofgadgets knowledge of all the manydifferent mechanisms and wiring, thiswould be challenging and difficult forme because my expertise level in thoseareas lack a bit. The time and moneyspent contributed to this artefactwould be vast. There so manytechnicalities towards this design ascareful wiring and fitting componentsand not forgetting securing theartefact would be difficult to acquire.
