THE GENERATION GAP
The world is undergoing a rapid change. That is, views,
opinions, fashion, and even traditions are changing rapidly. The
old cannot get used to these changes easily. They always talk
about good old days, and grumble about the young, which ads to a
generation gap. Parents always mention the problems of the young.
If there is one, then, we can say that it is the old who create
it. Everyone is of the opinion that the young are, after all,
human beings – people just like their parents. There is only one
difference between an old man and a young man: the young man has
got a bright future before him and the old one has got a 1ot of
experience behind him.

Although stage plays have been set to music the era
of the Greeks, when the dramas of Sophocles and Aeschylus were
accompanies by lyres and flutes, the usual accepted date for the
beginning of opera as we know it is 1600. As part of the
celebration of the marriage of King Henry IV of France to the
Italian aristocrat Maria de Medici, the Florentine composer
Jacopo Peri produced his famous Euridice, generally considered to
be the first opera. Following his example, a group of Italian
musicians called the Camerata began to revive the style of
musical story that had been used in Greeks tragedy.
For several years, then center of opera was Florence, but
gradually it spread throughout Italy and into Europe. The
European form de-emphasized the dramatic aspect. New orchestral
effects and even ballet were introduced under the guise of opera.
Composers gave into the demands of singer, writing many operas
that were nothing more than a succession of brilliant tricks for
the voice. Arias, recitative, and duets evolved. The aria, which
is a long solo, may be compared to a song. The recitative, which
is also a solo, is a recitations to music, whereas the duet is a
musical piece written for two voices.

SECTION 2: Read the following passage and choose the best answer
Parents whose children show a special interest in a
particular sport have a difficult decision about their children's
careers. Should they allow their children to train to become top
sportsmen and women? For many children it means starting very
young and school work, going out with friends and other interests
have to take second place. It's very difficult to explain to a
young child why he or she has to train for five hours a day, even
at the weekend, when most of his or her friends are playing.
Another problem is, of course, money. In many countries money for
training is available from the government for the very best young
sportsmen and women. If this help cannot be given it means that
it is the parents who have to find the time and the money to
support their child's development - and sports clothes, transport
to competitions, special equipment, and etc. can all be very
expensive. Many parents are understandably worried that it is
dangerous to start serious training in a sport at an early age.
Some doctors agree that young muscles may be damaged by training
before they are properly developed. Professional trainers,
however, believe that it is only by starting young that you can
reach the top as a successful sports person. What is clear is
that very few people do reach the top and both parents and
children should be prepared for failure even after many years of
training.
21. This is from
B. an advertisement D. a newspaper article
C. a sports diary A. a letter
22. What is the writer's intention?
A. To inform us about training. B. To discuss
training method.
C. To give details about training costs. D. To suggest a
training program.
23. What kind of help is there for some young people who do well
in sports?
A. training on the weekends
B. sports clothes, equipment, and travel to competitions
C. financial help from the government
D. parents, doctors and professional trainers
24. Early training could be good because
A. children don’t have to play on the weekends.
B. there will be less homework to do.
C. it can prepare children for failure after years of training.
.
D. an early start might help someone be very good in a sport.
25. What is NOT true according to the passage?
A. A child taking sport as a career has to train every day.
B. This help means financial help from the government.
C. There are three problems parents worry about.
D. If you start young, you will surely reach the top as a
sportsperson.
