Backin1969,webegantohearrumorsthatwewouldhavedifferentcolorsoflawnandgardentractors.Wewonderedwhatthiswasallabout.

DeereandCompanyhasusedHenryDreyfussAssociatestohelpselltheirproducts.DreyfussisanindustrialengineeringgroupinNewYorkthatworkswithmanyclientstodothinking“outofthebox”tohelpsales.DreyfussfirstworkedwithDeereonstylingfortheirfarmtractorsintroducedin1939.Stylingtogiveanewmodernlookdidhelpselltractors.

DreyfussnoticedthatJohnDeerelawnandgardentractorsandequipmentsit“side-by-side”nexttocompetitivemakesinmanylawnandgardendealerships.Thethinkingwasthatwomenareinfluentialindecisionmakingwhenbuyingalawnandgardentractorbecausetheywillbeusingandviewingit.DreyfussthoughtprovidingJohnDeerelawnandgardentractorsindifferentcolorswouldincreasesales.

ManycoloredtractorsweremadeinHoricon,WisconsinandshippeddowntoMoline,IllinoisforDeere&Companyexecutivestoview.Fourcolorswereselected:PatioRed,SpruceBlue,AprilYellow,andSunsetOrange.TractorsandimplementswerepaintedDogwoodWhite.Theseatsandhoodshadthedifferentcolors.Dealerscouldquicklychangethesetosuitacustomer’spreferences.Tractorsincludedwere:Models110,112,120,and140.

So,wehadcoloredtractorsforthe1970season.Somecustomerslikedthenewcolors,andsomedidnot.Thosewhodidnotbought

thegreenandyellowtractors.Whenacoloredtractorwastradedin,manydealerswouldtakethesetractorstothebackroomandpaintthemgreenandyellow.Attachmentssuchasmowerdecks,snowblowers,andcartswereavailableinwhiteortraditionalgreenandyellow.Thismadeduplicationininventorywithwhichdealersstruggled.

Thecoloredtractorscamein1970andabouthalfwayinto1971.Thenalltractorsandattachmentsrevertedtogreenandyellow.ThewordPatiocamelatertoidentifythesetractorsjustashappenswithusageofmanywords.

Todaycolored“Patios”commandahigherpricebecausetherearefewerofthemthanthegreentractors.Authenticseatsandhoodsarebecomingscarceandcostly.Also,thosepersonsrestoringcoloredtractors,pleasebeawarethatdogwoodwhitewillnotcoveraswelloraseasilyasgreen.Thepaintdoesnothavethesame“body”asthegreen.Also,grassstainsareworseonwhitethanonyellow.Awordofwarning:therearewhitetractorsouttherepaintedgreen,andgreentractorspaintedwhite!Somepeoplehavemadethemtobewhattheywanted,ratherthanwhattheywereoriginally,usuallyasecond-handownership.Aclueistolookunderneaththemachineforpaintthatdoesnotmatchorincompletecoverageofonecoloroveranother.

Intheearly1950’s,someDeereexecutivesrealizedthetwo-cylindertractorshadpushedashighinhorse-powerthattheycouldgowithtwocylinders.In1953,aseparateselectgroupofengineersstartedfromscratchatadowntownstore(calledTheMeatMarket)todevelopnewtractorsoriginallyscheduledforintroductionin1958.

DubuqueWorkstookthe430andaddedafour-cylinderenginetomakethe1010.Acompletelynewdesignwasusedforthenextlargertractor,the2010.WaterlooWorkstriedtomakesomethingnewandexclusivebybuildingV4andV6engines.Theseweretoowideforrow-cropuseandtheythrewheatbackontheoperator.Thistangentefforttookuptimeandtheysoonhadtochangetheintroductiondateto1960.

Waterlooengineersstartedwithcleansheetsofpaperandarrivedatin-line,four-cylinderandsix-cylinderengineswhichsharedmanyinternalparts.Enginespeedwasdoubledtogive2200rpmattopspeed.Thisgavethemavariablespeedenginewithpowerfrom1500rpmupto2200rpm.Engineswereavailablewithgasoline,LP,anddiesel.TheRoosa-Masterinjectionpumphadvariabletimingtomakethedieselenginesrunsmoothatanyspeed.Thisgivesamuchhigherhorse-powertoweightratiothatgivesnimbleperformancelikeweneversawbefore.Theframewidthwassetat20inchesbutthetwocylinderswere16inches.Stylingwasjustbeautiful.Thehoodwascurvedsuchthatifthefrontendwasabithighorlow,itstilllookednice.Thesewereavailableinstandard,row-crop,andhi-crop.

WaterlooWorkswasresponsibleforthelargertwotractors.Thetransmissionsofthe3010and4010havefourgearsonthebottomshaftwithsynchronizedlow,high,andreverseonthetopshaft,givingeightspeedsforwardandthreereverses.(Fourthreversewaslockedoutforsafetyreasons.)Theshiftleverhasfourstationsgivinglowhigh,andreverse.Thegears,inconstantmesh-onlycollars,areshiftedtogiveamuchstrongertransmission.Oilwaspumped,underpressure,insidethegearstokeepthemrunningfreely.Therearwheelswereavailablewithspiralrailstomakeforeasyadjustmentforspininorspinout.Frontwheelscouldbereadilychangedfromsinglewheel,dualfixed,dualwithRoll-O-Matic,

andwidefrontwheels.Theengineersselectedaclosed-center

hydraulicsystem,meaningthevalvesareclosedwhileinneutralposition.Thisrequiresapistonpumpthathasvariablestrokepistons.Theconceptcamefromthe707Boeingairplane.Whennotneeded,thereisnodrainonhorse-power,butwhenneeded,canproducelotsofoilflow,quickly.Standbypressureis2250psi.Thishigherpressureallowskeepingthehydrauliccylindersrelativelysmallandstillraiselargeimplementsquickly.Thistypeofsystemcanrunallhydraulicfunctionsonthetractorsimultaneously.Functionsonthesetractorsincludepowersteering,powerbrakes,rockshaft,andselectivecontrolvalvesforremotehydrauliccylinders.Steeringisdonewithoilpressurethroughsteellines.Thesteeringvalvehasprovisionformanualsteeringifneeded.Thereisnomechanicallinkformanualsteering–thiswasafirstforagriculturaltractors!Powerbrakesgaveeasyuseandbrakingcapacitynotknownbefore.Therockshafthadlowerlinksensing,andworkedwellwith4or5bottom-semi-mounted145plows.AQuik-Couplermadehitchingto3-pointimplementseasilydonewithtractorhydraulicsfromthetractorseat.

Thefinaldrivesuseplanetarygearstospreadoutthetorqueloadandreducepressureatcontactpoints.Thisallowsusingmuchthinneroilinthetransmission.Thebrakedisksareincorporatedintothefinaldrivesotheyruninoilandarecooledbyoil.Thisfeaturewaspatented.Transmissionoilandhydraulicoilarethesame,makingthetrans-missionanicereservoirfortheoil.Oil,pumpedthroughthetransmission,isfilteredbeforegettingtothehydraulicsystem.Oilgoesthroughacoolerwhichsitsbesidetheradiatortokeeptheoilcool.

Eventheseatwasredesignedtobemorecomfortableforoperators.Dr.JanetTravellwascalledintoassistinthedesignofthedeluxePersonal-Postureseatforimprovedcomfort.Theseatsoonbecamestandardequipment.Later,shewasthephysicianforPresidentJohnF.Kennedy.

The4010wastheflag-shipoftheNewGenerationtractors.Thesix-cylinderenginehasasoundofitsownthatspeakspower.Farmerslovedthehandlingandpowerofthenewtractors.Thesetractorsmadecompetitionscurrytotheirdrawingboardstoimprovetheirtractors.The3010and4010werewayabovethecompetition.
