5.2.3 Thermal motor protectionThe motor temperature is monitored via a sensor-based, drive-internal temperature model andensures a high level of protection for the motorsagainst thermal overload.

The threshold values for motor temperature mon-itoring are contained in the encoder data memoryand are read in and monitored automaticallyduring the operation with Rexroth controllers.Threshold values for MS2S motors are:

• Motor-warning temperature (140°C)• Motor-disconnection temperature (145°C)

5.2.4 Cooling modeSelf-cooling (IC410)In case of self-cooling motors, the heat dissipa-tion is realized via natural convection and radia-tion to the ambient air as well as by heat conduc-tion to the machine construction.

The specified nominal data is reached at ambienttemperatures of up to 40 °C. Unhindered verticalconvection has to be ensured by a sufficient dis-tance of 100 mm to adjacent components. Anyusage at increased ambient temperature (0 ...60°C) is possible. Please note the details in⮫ Chapter 8.5 “Derating in case of deviatingambient conditions” on page 38.

Pollution of the surface of the motor reduces heatdissipation and can result in thermal overload. The availability of the system can be increased byregular checks and cleaning of the motors. Pleaseensure access to the motors for maintenance pur-poses.

5.2.5 EncoderBASIC encoders " Ix " use a magnetic samplingmethod. Data output of process and parameterdata (electronic type plate) happens digitally viactrlX SENSEmotor protocol. The motor temperatureis transmitted digitally.

5.2.6 Degree of protection

The protection type according to EN 60034-5 isdetermined by the abbreviation IP (InternationalProtection) and two code numbers for the degreeof protection. The first code number stands forthe degree of protection against contact andingress of foreign bodies. The second codenumber stands for the degree of protectionagainst ingress of water.

The standard design for a non-positive shaft-hubconnection without play and excellent smoothrunning. Use clamping sets, pressure sleeves orclamping elements for coupling the machine ele-ments to be driven.

The shaft sealing ring affects the degree of pro-tection. We recommend regular visual inspec-tions on shaft sealing rings. Depending on oper-ating conditions, signs of wear may appear after5,000 operating hours. If necessary, replace theshaft sealing rings.

Attachment of drive elementsThe mode of balancing of drive elements must beadjusted to the motor. Observe the notes aboutmounting drive elements.

25 / 50MS2SFeatures and functions

Bosch Rexroth AGR911410077, Edition 01

CAUTION

Ingressing fluid may damage the motor!

Fluids (e.g., cooling lubricants, gear oil, etc.)may not be present at the output shaft.

When attaching gearboxes, only use gearboxeswith a closed (oil-tight) lubrication system.Gearbox oil should not be in permanent contactwith the shaft sealing ring of the motors.

Overdetermined bearing

When installing drive elements, avoid overdeter-mined bearing, as impermissibly high bearingreactions can be generated due to unfavorablebearing ratios.

Remark: If an overdetermined arrangement ofbearings cannot be avoided, please contactBosch Rexroth.

Couplings

The machine construction and the drive elementsused must be carefully adapted to the motor typeso as to make sure that the load limits of the shaftand the bearing are not exceeded.

Remark: When extremely stiff couplings areattached, the revolving radial force may cause animpermissibly high load on the shaft and bearing.

Bevel gear pinion or helical drive pinion

Due to thermal expansion, the DE side of thedrive shaft can be displaced by up to 0.25 mm inrelation to the motor housing. If helical drive pin-ions or bevel gear pinions directly attached to theoutput shaft are used, this change in the lengthswill lead to

• a shift in the position of the axis, if the drivingpinions are not axially fixed on the machineside.

• a thermally dependent component of theaxial force, if the driving pinions are axiallyfixed on the machine side. This causes therisk of exceeding the maximum permissibleaxial force or of the gear backlash increasingto an impermissible degree.

• damage of the NDE bearing by exceeding themaximum permissible axial force.

Remark: It is recommended to use drive ele-ments with integrated bearings and mount themon the motor shaft via axially compensating cou-plings.

5.2.8 Holding brakeMS2S motors can optionally be provided withspring force brakes. The holding brakes operateaccording to the “electrically-released” principle(closed-circuit principle) and open upon applyingthe switching voltage.

• The service life (switching cycles) of springforce brakes depends on the number of start-stop cycles. With spring force brakes, there isalways startup wear, since an air cushionmust first build up between the lining and thefriction surfaces when the speed increases. This wear can be increased by accelerationsof the friction disk, e.g. in the case of a ver-tical arrangement (acceleration due togravity) or by external centrifugal forces, whereby in this case only one friction liningside is affected in most cases.

• The holding brakes with emergency stopfunction are intended to secure motor shaftsat standstill. The holding brakes are no oper-ation brakes to decelerate motors in opera-tion from speed.

• In case of an emergency stop or voltage drop, the brake operation is only allowed to a lim-ited extend. Up to 500 breaking cycles fromspeed 3000 1/min can be performed, whereas the maximum switched energy per

emergency stop of the brake must not beexceeded. The number of brake applicationsper hour is 20, whereas a uniform schedulingis a precondition. For specifications aboutthe max. switched energy per emergencystop, see ⮫ Chapter “Technical data holdingbrakes” on page 27

CAUTION

Malfunctions due to wear

Impermissibly high wear due to breaking fromspeed by exceeding the specified emergencystop properties.

Avoid deceleration from speed during setupmode.

The rated voltage to apply the brakes is 24 V DC±10%.

The voltage supply of the holding brake has to bedesigned so as to guarantee under the worstinstallation and operation conditions that a suffi-cient voltage 24 V DC ±10% is available at themotor in order to release the holding brake.

The voltage drop ΔU on the brake supply canapproximately be calculated for copper conduc-tors using the following formula:

Fig. 1: Voltage drop of brake supply for Cu(copper) conductorΔU Voltage drop [V]ρCu Specific resistance of copper [Ω*mm2/m]l Cable length [m]q Wire cross section [mm2]IN Rated current [A]

CAUTION

Malfunction in case of exceeded tolerance of therated voltage (switching voltage)

For safe switching of the holding brake, a ratedvoltage of 24 V DC ±10% is required at themotor.

Ensure correct dimensioning of the supply wires(wire length and cross-section) for the holdingbrake.

The control voltage can be reduced using theenergy saving function after safely releasing thebrake.

The holding brakes are intended for direct con-nection to the ctrlX controllers. A protective cir-cuit to switch inductive loads of holding brakes isintegrated in ctrlX controllers.

Decrease brake voltage

The control voltage of the holding brake in MS2Sholding brakes can be reduced after executingthe switching operation “Open brake”. Bydecreasing the control voltage, energy can besaved of up to 50% and the self-heating of themotor can be reduced.

To decrease the control voltage of MS2S holdingbrakes, the following conditions apply:

• Maximum decrease of control voltage to UN

17 V• Waiting time after releasing the holding brake

is at least 200 ms• Decreasing the control voltage by voltage

control or pulse width modulation with aPWM cycle frequency ≥ 4 kHz

Remark: Refer to the instructions in the con-trol module documentation.Refer to the notes for dimensioning of the cablelength and cable cross-section of brake cables.

PropertiesThe permanent magnet holding brakes optionallyused in MS2S motors operate according to theclosed-circuit principle. Non-operative holdingbrakes are closed and open when reaching therelease voltage. To ensure safe functioning of thebrake, the rated voltage at the brake (24 V DC±10%) has to be ensured. Please note the instal-lation conditions such as ambient temperature, cable length, cable cross-section and the layingtype.

The holding brake is used to hold the motor shaftin case of motor standstill. Using the operatingbrake to decelerate the rotating motor is not per-missible.

Holding brakes safety instructionsThe spring force brake of MS2S motors is nosafety brake. This means, a torque reduction bynon-influenceable disturbance factors can occur.Especially for use in vertical axes.

Grievous bodily harm due to dangerous move-ments from falling or dropping axes!

Secure vertical axes against dropping or sinkingafter switching off by e.g.:

− Mechanical locking of the vertical axis− External brake, arrestor, clamping device.− Weight compensation of the axes

The holding brake itself is not suitable for per-sonal protection. Ensure protection of individualsby superordinate protective measures such ascordoning off of danger zones using protectivefences or grids.

For European countries, additionally comply withthe following standards and guidelines, e.g.

• EN 954; ISO 13849-1 and ISO 13849-2Safety-related parts of control units

• Information sheet no. 005 Gravity-loadedaxes (vertical axes) published by: DGUVFachbereich Holz und Metall (GermanEmployer's Liability Insurance AssociationWood and Metal)

Determine the safety requirements valid for thecase of application and observe the safetyrequirements during plant design. Comply withnational regulations at the installation site of thesystem.

Holding brake - commissioning and mainte-nance instructionsThat is why the function and the holding brakeshave to be checked in regular intervals and mal-functions must be removed in an appropriateperiod.

The braking effect can be reduced by:

• Corrosion on friction surfaces, vapor andsediment

• Over voltages and too high temperatures• Wear (increasing the air gap between arma-

ture and pole)

The holding brake functionality can be checkedmechanically by hand (torque wrench) or auto-matically by means of the software function.

Manually check holding torque (M4)

1. Disconnect the motor from the powersupply and secure it against beingswitched on again.

2. Measure the transferable holding torque(M4) of the holding brake with a torquewrench.

Check holding torque (M4) automatically

Start the P-0-0541, C2100 CommandHolding system check in drive controller. The efficiency of the holding brake and theopened state are checked by starting theroutine.

🡆 If the holding torque (M4) is not ach-ieved, the resurfacing routine can beused to reconstitute the holdingtorque.

Bearing service lifeThe bearing lifetime is an important criterion forthe availability of motors. The operating condi-tions influence the bearing service life L10h con-siderably.

The following boundary conditions apply to thebearing service life L10h:

• Operation within the specified permissibleloads (radial and axial force)

• Operation within the permissible ambientconditions (temperature range 0 … 40 °C,vibration, and so on).

• Operation within the thermally permissibleoperating characteristic curve

The bearing lifetime also depends on the servicelife of the grease. A calculated grease service lifewas used for the mentioned specifications, takinginto consideration the following boundary condi-tions.

• Horizontal installation• Low vibration and impact loads• No oscillating bearing movement < 180°• Mean speed according to ⮫ Table 9 “Mean

speed - basis of calculated grease servicelife” on page 29:

Table 9: Mean speed - basis of calculated greaseservice life

WARNING

Operations in the vicinity of live parts areextremely dangerous.

− Work required on the electric system mayonly be carried out by skilled electricians.Tools for electricians (VDE tools) are abso-lutely necessary.− Isolate (even auxiliary circuits).− Secure against reactivation.− Ensure de-energization.− Ground and short-circuit.− Cover or shield any adjacent live parts.

WARNING

Personal and material damage during mainte-nance work in operation!

− Never carry out maintenance work on run-ning machines. While carrying out maintenance work, secure the machine such that it cannotrestart or be used by unauthorized persons.

CAUTION

Hot surfaces with temperatures over 60 °C maycause burns!

− Allow the motors to cool down prior to com-mencing work.Wear safety gloves.Do not work on hot surfaces.

Motors

Dirt, dust or chips may adversely affect the func-tionality of the motors and, in extreme cases, even cause a failure of the motors. Therefore, inregular intervals (after one year at the latest), youshould clean the surface of the motors in order toachieve a sufficiently large heat radiation surface. If the cooling fins are partially covered with dirt, sufficient heat dissipation via the ambient air isno longer possible.

Insufficient heat dissipation can have undesirableconsequences. The bearing life is reduced byoperation at inadmissibly high temperatures(bearing grease decomposes). Overtemperatureswitch-off despite operation on the basis ofselected data, because the appropriate cooling ismissing.

Connection cables

WARNING

Electric shock due to contact with live parts!

− Change damaged connection cables anddecommission the plant immediately.Do not repair any connection lines provi-sionally.

• Check the connection cable for damage atregular intervals and replace it if necessary.

• Check optionally existing drag chains ondefects.

• Check the protective conductor connectionat regular intervals for proper condition andtight fit and replace if necessary.

The handling duration is influ-enced by the rotor frame size. The rotor or thesecondary part has to remain in the oven for aminimum of 30 minutes, starting at the time, themagnetic surface has reached 300 °C. If the mag-nets are surrounded by a bandage or a coverplate, it is recommended to remove it beforeheating in the oven to expose the magnets.

If demagnetization is successful, the magnets canbe separated from the rotor or secondary partafter cooling without applying force.
