IT=S GALILEO DAYIN DEAUVILLE
By Emma Berry and Tom Peacock
The curtain couldn't have fallen in more emphatic fashion on
the first session of Arqana's August Yearling Sale on Saturday
when the final lot in the ring (88), a Galileo (Ire) half-brother to
the Group 1-winning duo of Most Improved (Ire) and Ectot (Ire),
sold for a nicely rounded i1-million to MV Magnier in
partnership with Mayfair Speculators and Peter and Ross Doyle.
"He was a very nice horse and what Galileo is doing this year
we haven't seen before. The mare [Tonnara] has bred two
Group 1 winners already. Let's hope he becomes the third," said
the man whose family holds the crown jewel of the European
bloodstock industry in Galileo, whose offspring filled the top
three slots on the leaderboard on Saturday.
If the supersire dominates the European stallion tables, it's
Henri Bozo and his shrewd team of investors in Ecurie des
Monceaux who have come to rule Arqana's high summer
extravaganza in recent seasons. Once more the team was the
leading vendor after day one, with 17 sold for a total of
i6,795,000 and average of i399,706.
The Monceaux tally accounted for a significant portion of the
day's aggregate of i17,132,000, which was up 18% on the
corresponding session last year.

WINX BLOWS START, WINS ANYWAY Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), the world=s highest-rated mare
and turf horse, added some drama to her seasonal debut in
Saturday=s G2 Warwick S. when missing the break by four
lengths, but nonetheless got up to beat stablemate and last-out
G1 Coolmore Legacy S. winner Foxplay (Aus) (Foxwedge {Aus})
by a neck, notching her 18th consecutive win (video). Making
her 6-year-old debut and her first start since a 5 1/4-length
victory in the G1 Queen Elizabeth S. over this same Randwick
track on Apr. 8, Winx broke in the air and was well last in the
opening stages of the 1400 metre race. Working her way
gradually closer as Ecuador (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) made the
running and Foxplay sat two lengths off his heels on the rail,
Winx and Hugh Bowman were still last with at least six lengths
to make up as they came off the turn. Widest of all coming into
the straight, Winx blew past the entire field under a handride
from Bowman and got up just in time to nip Foxplay on the line,
with Ecuador staying on for third. Cont. Worldwide News p26Team Mayfair Speculators and Peter and Ross Doyle | Zuzanna Lupa

The average rose even more dramatically, climbing 40% to
i259,576, with the median also rising from i150,000 to
i180,000. With 66 of the 82 yearlings offered finding a buyer,
the clearance rate held steady at 80%.
The Mayfair Speculators' love affair with Arqana's August Sale
and the offspring of the Ecurie des Monceaux matriarch
Prudenzia (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) continued on Saturday when Peter
Doyle went to i950,000 on
behalf of the South African
conglomerate in partnership
with Coolmore for the mare's
latest filly by Galileo (Ire) (lot
51). Twelve months ago the
same team bought the filly's
full-sister, now named Magic Wand (Fr) and in training with
Aidan O'Brien, for i1.4-million, while two years earlier they had
gone to i1.1-million for the dual winner Craven's Legend (Ire)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}). This is the sixth of Prudenzia's yearling to
have graced the ring in August. Four have made seven-figure
sums while the 'cheapest' of the bunch--who was hardly a snip
at i600,000--is so far the best to date, her G1 Irish
Oaks-winning daughter Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).
"We've gone back to the family," said Derek Brugman, agent
for Mayfair Speculators. "Unfortunately Craven's Legend has
had a tendon injury but he should be back in training with Andre
Fabre soon and this filly's full-sister is with Aidan O'Brien and is a
later-maturing type. This filly will stay in France and go to Andre
Fabre."
It wasn't long before the Mayfair Speculators returned to that
familiar source of Galileo and Ecurie des Monceaux, adding lot
65, a filly out of Secrete (Fr) (Cape Cross {Ire}), a half-sister to G1
Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud
winner Plumania (Fr) (Anabaa),
for i700,000. Brugman
suggested it was mission
accomplished for the team
when Doyle signed for the filly,
who will be owned outright by
Mayfair Speculators.
"We thought she was one of the two best fillies at the sale,
and the other one was lot 51," he said. "She's a very good-
moving filly with lots of substance. We hope to be able to breed
from these Galileos in the future and she's going to stay in
France and be trained by Nicolas Clement."

Among the many international buyers in Normandy were
plenty of Japanese owners and their representatives, including
Dr Hiroshi Fukuda, who bought another of the Monceaux draft,
a Dubawi (Ire) daughter of the GI Beverly D S. winner Royal
Highness (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) (lot 55), for i650,000 on behalf
of Koji Maeda. The half-sister to dual Group 2 winner Free Port
Lux (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) will be exported to Japan and
eventually join a select broodmare band being assembled by the
owner-breeder for his stallion Kizuna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}),
a Group 1 winner in his home country and winner of the G2
Qatar Prix Niel during his European foray of 2013.
Making a first visit to Deauville was Kunimoto Tetsuhide, who
signed for lot 54, a Frankel (GB) filly out of the Group 2-winning
sprinter Restiadargent (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) for i360,000,
shortly after he'd secured a first-crop son of four-time Group 1
winner Kingman (GB) for i340,000. The colt (lot 44) is out of
the G2 Park Hill S. runner-up Phiz (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}), whose
listed-winning half-sister Penny Lane (Ger) (Lord Of England
{Ger}) had been in action at Deauville earlier in the day in the
G2 Shadwell Prix de la Nonette, in which she finished sixth.
The action had become non-stop with Frankel's lot 66 proving
to be another star attraction, this time from the draft of Haras
d'Etreham. The chestnut filly was bought for an undisclosed
client by Charlie Gordon-Watson at a cost of i650,000. Her dam
Sefroua (Kimgmambo) won the Listed Prix de Lieurey just across
the road at the Deauville racecourse, and she is the
grand-daughter of G1 Coronation S. winner Sophisticat (Storm
Cat).
"She's going to be trained by Andre Fabre," said Gordon-
Watson. "He loved her and we loved her."

The following lot 67 was also from Etreham and is a member
of the second crop of Declaration Of War. The filly is a half-sister
to the Aga Khan's Shareta (Ire) Sinndar {Ire}), who claimed the
G1 Prix Vermeille and G1 Yorkshire Oaks. Nicolas de Watrigant's
Mandore Agency took her for i500,000. "Declaration Of War
had a good 2-year-old winner here the other week in Olmedo
(Fr), who is trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, and I think he's going
to be a good stallion," said De Watrigant. "This filly is for a new
client and I thought she was an outstanding, racey type, which is
what we look for."
If you can combine the hottest second-season sire with a
similarly hot first-season sire on the page of one colt then the
chances are that this perfect storm will reap rewards in the sales
ring. Thus it proved for Eric L'hermite of Haras de Grandcamp,
who sold a Frankel (GB) half-brother to Dabirsim (Fr) (lot 57) for
i550,000. The buyer was a man who has already tasted success
with the offspring of Frankel, Hussain Lootah, the owner of
recent G3 Rose Of Lancaster S. winner Frankuus (Ire).
"I thought this was the nicest colt of any on the first day of the
sale and he's a half-brother to one of the most exciting stallions
out there so I'm delighted to be able to buy him for Hussain
Lootah," said agent Richard Knight. "There's no firm decision on
where he'll be trained yet but it's likely to be in the UK."
Mark Richards made the fastest start to proceedings as he
snapped up the first two lots for the Hong Kong Jockey Club. A
Frankel (GB) half-brother to multiple Group-placed Chemical
Charge (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) out of the consistent Jakonda
(Kingmambo) opened up the sale as lot 1, the hammer going
down at i310,000.
"We've got plenty to get through but it's wonderful to make
such a quick start," said Richards of Haras de Montaigu's
offering. "We've had some success from the farm before--we
know they breed good horses--and he had a nice athletic walk.
Obviously Frankel is an easy one to sell everywhere in the world
but in Hong Kong they want big names." Cont. p5

Arqana August Yearlings cont.
Richards had barely drawn breath before he stretched to
i360,000 for lot 2, the first progeny of champion miler Kingman
(GB) to sell in the European season, out of Janicellaine (Ire)
(Beat Hollow {GB}, a half-sister to dual Group 1 winner
Chriselliam (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), and consigned by Ballylinch Stud.
"First-season sires aren't always something we get into but
Kingman was a champion," said Richards. "He was a
deep-girthed, athletic type and I kept coming back to him."
The explosive start to the sale continued with the appearance
in the ring of the first No Nay Never yearling to go through the
ring in Europe (lot 4). The first foal of the 5-year-old Jessica
Rocks (GB), a Fastnet Rock (Aus) half-sister to one of this
season's leading freshman sires Havana Gold (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}),
was offered by La Motteraye Consignment and was the first
purchase at the sale for Phoenix Thoroughbred Limited, who
shelled out $3.95-million on six yearlings at Saratoga and bid
i480,000 for this colt through Kerri Radcliffe.
"He's by a son of Scat Daddy and we love him," said the agent.
"He's a good colt, very well-balanced, and I'm very happy to
have been able to buy him for Phoenix Thoroughbreds. He'll go
to our new French trainer Andre Fabre.@
Among the team's breeze-up purchases this season is recent
good maiden winner Lansky (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}), trained by
Jeremy Noseda, who heads to the G3 Acomb S. at York next
week.
The second yearling by No Nay Never to be offered in the
session, a half-sister to G2 Norfolk S. winner Waterloo Bridge
(Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) and G3 Prix Minerve heroine Forces Of
Darkness (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), brought the hammer down at
i120,000. The April-born filly was offered by Camas Park &
Glenvale Studs and bought by TCH Bloodstock. Cont. p6

Another first was notched just six lots later when a
half-brother to the dual Group 1 winner Qemah (Fr) (Danehill
Dancer {Ire}) by the Tweenhills freshman Charm Spirit (Ire) was
snapped up by Shadwell for i500,000. Signing the docket for lot
10, agent Angus Gold said, "He's a very nice individual.
Obviously we don't know anything about the stallion's runners
yet but he was a very good racehorse himself and this colt is a
half-brother to a top-class filly. I thought he was a smart horse
every time I saw him and fortunately Sheikh Hamdan agreed
with me."
Gold couldn't confirm whether the colt, out of the Group
3-placed Rainbow Quest mare Kartica (GB) and offered by his
breeder Pierre Talvard of Haras du Cadran, would follow his sire
to the stable of Freddy Head, who trains Sunday's Group 1
contender Tantheem (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) for the sheikh. "It
depends if we win the Morny tomorrow," he joked.
American agent Alex Solis, hidden away at the back of the ring,
made the successful bid for lot 25, a striking grey daughter of
Shamardal (Ire) out of Manerbe (Unbridled's Song), who was
bought for the Roth family's LNJ Foxwoods Stable for i450,000
from Ecurie des Monceaux.
"We've been looking at the family before," said Solis of the
half-sister to G3 Seaway S. winner Marbre Rose (Ire) (Smart
Strike). "She's got a fantastic pedigree and she looks like a real
Unbridled's Song as well. Shamardals go on faster ground and
the idea is that she'll go back to the States. I don't know about
the trainer yet." Cont. p7

Anthony Stroud and David Loder | Racing Post photo
Arqana August Yearlings cont.
Following her into the ring was a daughter of Sea The Stars
(Ire) (lot 26), who was high on the list of Godolphin buyers
Anthony Stroud and David Loder. The duo eventually had the
final say at i400,000.
"We were underbidders on the first two lots into the ring so I
guess it's a case of third time lucky," Stroud said. "She's by a
very good stallion out of a group-winning mare and has a really
lovely action."
Consigned by Grove Stud, the filly is a daughter Marvada (Ire)
(Elusive City), a dual Group 3 winner in Ireland for Ken Condon
whose second foal, now named Mount Wellington (Ire)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and in training with Aidan O'Brien,
fetched i475,000 in the same ring last year.
Noted breeze-up pinhooker Brendan Holland of Grove Stud
wasted no time in reinvesting some of the funds accrued from
the filly's sale when parting with i220,000 the very next lot (27)
a colt by War Front out of the Galileo (Ire) mare Meandering
(Ire), a half-sister to Dutch Art (GB) (Medicean {GB}).
Stroud swung back into action later for lot 43, the full-sister to
G2 Prix de Sandringham winner and G1 Prix de Diane third Volta
(Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). The daughter of the Machiavellian mare
Persian Belle (GB), herself very closely related to the German
Group 1 winner and Gestut Hof Ittlingen stallion Neatico (Ger)
(Medicean {GB}), was offered by her breeder Thierry de la
Heronierre of Haras d'Ellon, and was knocked down for
i300,000.
The second session of the select part of the August Sale
continues today, again at 5:30 p.m., half an hour later than
published in the catalogue.

Nowhere is the relationship between risk and reward more in your favour when buying colts than in Australia. Our top colts are more affordable than other markets and, if you buy a stallion prospect, the returns are better than elsewhere.
You also have a better chance of buying the next generation of sire star here. Some 65 per cent of Australian Group 1 winners were sold before their racing careers, compared to 41 per cent in Europe and 55 per cent in the US*

Making his comeback having been injured in the G3 Sovereign
S. at Salisbury last August, Massaat was straight back in the
swing as he conjured up his basic class to re-establish himself in
an elite position he had previously enjoyed when runner-up in
the 2015 G1 Dewhurst S. and in last year=s G1 2000 Guineas.
After trailing Galileo Gold (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire}) by 1 1/2 lengths
in the Newmarket Classic, the homebred was tried in the
G1 Epsom Derby in June but failed to see out the mile-and-a-half

Connections only got as far as his next run in the Sovereign
and he had become something of a forgotten horse in the
interim, but this re-entry made sure he was back in the limelight
once again with a potentially profitable autumn campaign
ahead.
Remarkably 12-1 despite the withdrawal of the three group-
winning fillies Daban (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), Spangled (GB)
(Starspangledbanner {Aus}) and Mix and Mingle (Ire) (Exceed
and Excel {Aus}) due to the rain-softened ground, the bay
showed his well-being and enthusiasm early as he tanked along
for Jim Crowley over two lengths off the pace set by the other
Shadwell representative Ibn Malik (Ire) (Raven=s Pass). Looking
the winner a long way from home, Massaat moved to the front
smoothly with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Librisa Breeze, who had
met momentary trouble in running, emerged from behind with
his customary deadly finishing kick but the winner was beyond
recall and not stopping. AIt=s a great training performance to
have him ready,@ Crowley said. AIt=s the first time I=ve ridden him
and he gave me a great feel. He loved that slower ground and I
think it=s quite important to him as he=s a big horse who hits the
ground quite hard. Seven furlongs was ideal first time back, as
he was a little bit fresh and free early on. He saw it out well and
galloped out well. He=s a strong traveler and a mile will be fine
for him when he relaxes better next time.@
Trainer Owen Burrows is not looking too far ahead following
the colt=s previous problems, but was taking much out of the
performance which he admitted had come as a surprise. AI
thought he=d be rusty and I was just looking to get him back on
track, but he won impressively,@ he said. AHe had a chip
removed from his front fetlock and then was injured in
recuperation, so the whole team have done a great job with
him. We=ll get him back home and fingers crossed he=ll be fine in
the morning and we=ll plot then. We=ll have to look at Group 1s,
but it=s important that he has a bit of cut in the ground as it was
firm at Salisbury when he injured himself. We=ll keep away from
that ground.@
Pedigree Notes... Massaat, whose half-brother Eqtidaar (Ire) (Invincible Spirit
{Ire}) was an impressive debut winner for the Stoute stable on
Friday, is out of a half to the MSW Zeiting, responsible for five
black-type performers headed by the G3 Strensall S. winner and
G1 Caulfield Cup runner-up Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). Her
daughter Zut Alors (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who was third in the G3
Prix Miesque, is the dam of this year=s G1 Poule d=Essai des
Pouliches heroine Precieuse (Ire) (Tamayuz {GB}) and also the
smart sprinter Baccarat (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB}). Zeiting=s half-
sister Dolled Up (Ire) (Whipper) captured the G3 Prix du Bois and
is now the dam of Fou Rire (Ire) (Iffraaj {GB}), who took part in
Saturday=s G3 Prix du Calvados. The dam, who has proven an
inspired 130,000gns purchase by Shadwell at the 2009
Tattersalls October Book 1 Sale and who showed useful sprint
form for Charlie Hills, also has a yearling colt by Kodiac (GB).

This race lost a key player when Shutter Speed (GB) (Dansili
{GB}) was ruled out due to the rain-affected going, but another
>TDN Rising Star= in Sobetsu stepped forward to inject a touch of
class over the course and distance over which she had won the
May 14 G1 Prix Saint-Alary. Eighth of nine in the June 3
G1 Epsom Oaks and third in the G1 Nassau S. back at this trip at
Goodwood last time on Aug. 3, the bay who is becoming a
genuine soft-ground specialist was in front initially before
settling in third for James Doyle. As the returning G1 Prix de
Diane heroine Senga loomed on her outer in early straight, she
was asked to move forward and take command and duly
responded in her usual game fashion to do so with
1 1/2 furlongs remaining. Staying on strongly as that rival
flattened out, the homebred had put her seal on the contest in
which the Diane faller Onthemoonagain made further
progression as she denied Senga the runner-up spot.
Charlie Appleby is looking at big targets again with Sobetsu.
AWe have had this in mind for her for a long time, ever since her
run in the Oaks where we hoped for ease in the ground and it
didn=t happen,@ he explained. AThe truth is, she didn=t stay a mile
and a half at Epsom and she had since run a very good race in
the Nassau. With the ground like it is in Deauville at present, we
were quite confident. She has had two solid races in a short
period of time, so maybe she needs a break. She could possibly
go for the [G1 Prix de l=] Opera [at Chantilly on Oct. 1], but we
also have in mind the [GI] QEII Cup at Keeneland [on Oct. 14].@
Senga=s trainer Pascal Bary said, AIt looks like she might have
needed it and she was also a bit wide throughout, so we will
stick to the plan which is the Opera followed by the
[GI] Breeders= Cup Fillies & Mares Turf.@
Pedigree Notes... Sobetsu hails from the outstanding dynasty of Doff the Derby,
responsible for two Epsom Classic winners in the brilliant
champion Generous (Ire) and Imagine (Ire) (Sadler=s Wells), who
upstaged her full-sister Strawberry Roan (Ire) by also winning
the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. The Listed Prix Caravelle-winning
Lake Toya, who was also third in the G3 Prix de Flore, is a
daughter of Shinko Hermes who also produced three other
black-type performers headed by the Listed Winkfield S. scorer
and G3 Prix des Chenes third Sixth Sense (Ire) (Shamardal). She
is also the second dam of last year=s G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas
hero Dee Majesty (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), while the family
also includes the ill-fated G1 Grand Criterium scorer Horatio
Nelson (Ire) (Danehill), the GIII Monrovia H. and G3 C. L. Weld

Registering a decisive success on debut over six furlongs here
on July 30, Polydream was outnumbered by the British raiders in
this hot renewal but was well on top at the end to remain
unbeaten for a yard that has a supply of above-average
juveniles. Settled off the pace early by Maxime Guyon among
the group racing down the centre of the track, the bay made her
move out wide and hit the front traveling strongly 1 1/2 out.
Despite the efforts of the promising visitor Laurens, the
homebred had established an unassailable lead and was being
patted down the neck as she crossed the line. AShe=s a lovely filly
and a real good one,@ trainer Freddy Head said. AShe=s a lovely
mover with a lot of speed and we now have to make a decision
about whether we drop back down to six for the [G1] Cheveley

With the G1 St Leger already looking a strong renewal, this
race provided another potential big player ready to enter the
mix for that Doncaster Classic as Defoe continued his rise to the
fore when upstaging some smart older horses. His only
moderate effort came on his 2-year-old finale, when he was
11th in the Listed Zetland S. at Newmarket in October won by
the subsequent G2 Ribblesdale S. scorer Coronet (GB) (Dubawi
{Ire}), and in which Permian (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) and Wings of
Eagles (Fr) (Pour Moi {Ire}) were third and fourth, respectively.
Unbeaten so far at three, he captured the London Gold Cup here
on May 20 and another 10-furlong handicap at York on July 1
before beating the subsequent G3 Rose of Lancaster S. winner
Frankuus (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in Hamilton=s Listed Glasgow S.
over 11 furlongs on July 21.
Dropped out in rear early by Andrea Atzeni, the bay was
moving noticeably strongly in the straight and by the time he hit
the front with two furlongs remaining already had the measure
of the G1 Coronation Cup runner-up Frontiersman. Shaken up
soon after, Defoe drifted across the path of Wall of Fire and
sparked an inquiry in the process, but had a comfortable margin
over that rival at the line as his stamina came more and more
into play. AHe=s a gentleman of a horse and is very laid-back--he
traveled beautifully and got there fairly easily,@ Atzeni said. AHe
definitely stays really well and although the Leger is turning out
to be a good race, he=s there with a big chance.@

Losing his G1 Gold Cup title by a short head to Big Orange (GB)
(Duke of Marmalade {Ire}) at Royal Ascot on June 22, Order of St
George returned to home soil in the kind of mood that has seen
him gain such prominence in his career to dominate this trial for
the Sept. 10 G1 Irish St Leger.
That was another race he had previously dominated when a
3-year-old and a crown he also had to surrender last year as
Wicklow Brave (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}) refused to let him past.
That rival was in this contest too and as he loomed to the
favourite at the top of the straight it looked as if they could
resume battle as they had in September.
Order of St George, who had been roused from the break by
Ryan Moore to gain a prominent position in third, gave
generously when committed passing the quarter pole and drew
clear powerfully with the 3-year-old G2 Curragh Cup winner
Rekindling putting up the most meaningful pursuit. AHe=s a
high-class horse and the race suited him well, so hopefully he
can keep going forward from here,@ jockey Ryan Moore
commented. AHe likes that nice ground and it helps him, but he
was third on fast ground in the Arc.@
Pedigree Notes... The dam, who also has an as-yet unraced 2-year-old colt by
Declaration of War named Shakour (Ire) and a yearling colt by
Australia (GB), produced the GIII Pin Oak Valley View S. winner
Angel Terrace (Ghostzapper) and the G3 Prix Paul de Moussac
scorer Asperity (War Chant). She is out of the GI Breeders= Cup
Juvenile Fillies and GI Frizette S. heroine Storm Song, herself a
half-sister to the GII Oak Leaf S. winner Diamond Omi (Giant=s

Trojan Nation (Street Cry {Ire}). Her descendants include the G2

(Smarty Jones), while under the third dam Hum Along is the GIII
Northern Dancer Breeders= Cup S.-winning sire High Cotton.

>SO= STARS IN ROMANET Straightened by her return fifth behind Winter (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) at Glorious Goodwood, So Mi Dar (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) has
all in her favour on Sunday as she tilts at a first Group 1 success
in the Darley Prix Jean Romanet at Deauville. Lord Lloyd-
Webber=s G3 Musidora S. winner and G1 Prix de l=Opera third
will have no better chance at obtaining racing=s most sought-
after prize, with the race lacking a star turn and several of the
field having question marks over them. Unsuited by the testing
ground when fifth in the Aug. 3 G1 Nassau S., the homebred has
more suitable conditions this time and connections are
confident.
AShe=s in very good form and came out of the race at
Goodwood very well,@ the Lloyd-Webbers= racing manager
Simon Marsh said. ANothing suited her that day, but we had to
run her as she=d been off the track for so long. John [Gosden]
has been very happy with her since and we=re looking forward
to running here again. We have been a bit worried about what
the ground will be like, but I=m told they only had light showers
overnight and by Sunday, hopefully it won=t be too bad. We
know she=s a very good filly, but she's got to go and prove it on
the track. This looks a good opportunity for her.@
France=s chief hope appears to be Siyoushake (Ire) (Siyouni
{Fr}), who was third to Roly Poly (War Front) in the G1 Prix
Rothschild over a mile here last time on July 30 but who has to
prove stamina at this trip. One who has no issues in that regard
is Left Hand (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who enjoyed her finest hour
over a mile and a half in the G1 Prix Vermeille at Chantilly in
September. The Wertheimers= homebred has been slow to
come to hand so far this term, but there was evidence in her
latest effort when fifth at that distance in the July 2 G1 Grand
Prix de Saint-Cloud that she was on the way back.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE It is six years since Dabirsim (Fr) became the last French-
trained juvenile to win the G1 Darley Prix Morny at Deauville,
but Sunday=s renewal looks packed with promise from the
domestic brigade in which that former runner=s unbeaten
daughter Different League (Fr) takes prominent rank. Theresa
Marnane=s surprise package upset >TDN Rising Star= Alpha
Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) in Royal Ascot=s G3 Albany
S. last time on June 23 and the form of that six-furlong contest
has received significant boosts via the fifth, sixth and seventh
Madeline (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Actress (Ire) (Declaration of War)
and Clemmie (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). AWe are all set, the filly is very
well and it=s exciting,@ trainer Matthieu Palussiere said. AHer
preparation has been perfect. She has to take on colts, but really
there are not many other options. You would think she should
improve from Ascot and she=s playing at home this time.@
Different League=s compatriots include Sheikh Hamdan bin
Rashid Al Maktoum=s exciting July 30 G3 Prix de Cabourg scorer
Tantheem (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}), Alain Jathiere, Martin Schwartz
Racing and Gerard Augustin-Normand=s July 1 G3 Prix du Bois
winner Zonza (Fr) (Alex the Winner) and Claudio Marzocco=s
unlucky July 23 G2 Prix Robert Papin fourth High Dream Milena
(Fr) (Dabirsim {Fr}), but they all face a formidable rival in the
Mark Johnston-trained Nyaleti (Ire) (Arch). She came back from
two defeats by September (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and
Clemmie in the Listed Chesham S. at Royal Ascot on June 24 and
G2 Duchess of Cambridge S. at Newmarket on July 14 to win the
G3 Princess Margaret S. at Ascot by five lengths on July 29. AIt
was well publicised last time that Ryan Moore said he thought
she=d be better over seven furlongs and I wouldn=t doubt his
opinion at all, but she has got lots of speed and is clearly well
capable at six,@ Johnston said.
AShe=s a very big, strong filly, very straightforward at home and
we don=t really have to do much with her.@
ROSTROPOVICH FACES FUTURITY TASK A glance at the recent honour roll of The Curragh=s G2 Galileo
Irish EBF Futurity S. suggests that Aidan O=Brien regards it as an
important learning process for his budding Group 1 stars, and he
has a trio on Sunday who follow in the footsteps of the likes of
Giant=s Causeway, Hawk Wing, Gleneagles (Ire) and Churchill
(Ire). Ryan Moore is on Rostropovich (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who
needs to take a step forward on what he has shown so far but is
probably capable of doing so in a less-than-exacting renewal.
Having opened his account in a seven-furlong Gowran Park
maiden on June 25, he finished last of three when favourite
behind Camelback (Exchange Rate) in a conditions event also
over that trip at Naas on July 8. ARostropovich was disappointing
the last day but we think he might improve,@ the Ballydoyle
trainer commented.
Camelback also had Rostropovich behind when winning his
maiden at Leopardstown on May 26, but despite his honourable
progress has yet to convince Ger Lyons he is top-drawer
material. AHe=ll have to behave himself. He=s a nice horse, but
mentally he=s not there yet,@ his trainer said. AHe=s short of that
class, but he=s there and it will be another step in his education.@
Jim Bolger is represented by Theobald (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), who
followed a second to the subsequent G1 Phoenix S. third Actress
(Ire) (Declaration of War) in the G3 Anglesey S. here on July 15
with another runner-up finish behind >TDN Rising Star= The
Pentagon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G3 Tyros S. at Leopardstown
on July 27.

Breast Cancer Research Debutante S. to begin to establish the
pecking order among his best fillies Ballydoyle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})
and Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and he again pitches two future
luminaries against each other in Sunday=s renewal. One is >TDN
Rising Star= September (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who followed a
5 1/2-length success on debut at Leopardstown on June 8 with a
comprehensive defeat of the impressive subsequent G3 Princess
Margaret S. winner Nyaleti (Ire) (Arch) in the Listed Chesham S.
at Royal Ascot on June 24. Happily (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was
seventh behind September at Leopardstown before taking huge
leaps up the ladder when winning a Curragh maiden on June 30
and the G3 Silver Flash S. by five lengths back at Leopardstown
on July 27.
ASeptember hasn=t run since Royal Ascot, but she seems in
good form and we=ve been happy with her,@ O=Brien said. AWe
were delighted with Happily at Leopardstown and we think she
has come out of the race well. She might need the run for
experience, because they=ll go on then after that. The ground
should be lovely. Hopefully they won=t get too much rain.@
Godolphin is represented by the Jim Bolger-trained Silver Flash
third Dawn Delivers (GB) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), who beat the
other Ballydoyle runner Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in a six-
furlong Curragh maiden on July 16, and also the Willie
McCreery-trained Mary Tudor (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}). The
latter made Magical work hard when a head runner-up to that
full-sister to last year=s Debutante winner Rhododendron (Ire) at
Cork on debut on Aug. 8 and McCreery is confident she will put
up a bold show despite her inexperience. AShe ran a cracking
race down in Cork and has come on a lot from the run,@ he said.
AIt=s a huge step up for her, but I think she=ll do herself justice.@
STAYERS STEP OUT IN KERGORLAY The stayers get their turn during Deauville=s Sunday card in the
G2 Darley Prix Kergorlay, where Godolphin=s Endless Time (Ire)
(Sea the Stars {Ire}) bids to continue the momentum she set in
motion when winning the G3 Lillie Langtry S. over 14 furlongs at
Glorious Goodwood on Aug. 3. Second in the G1 Prix Vermeille
at Chantilly in September and G1 Prix Royal-Oak at Saint-Cloud
in October, she has a class edge over these rivals and trainer
Charlie Appleby said, AEndless Time put up another brave
performance at Goodwood last time out and came out of the
race well. I couldn=t be any happier with her and it looks like she
will have conditions to suit. A repeat performance of her latest
run is going to make her very competitive.@
Her biggest threat may emanate from Germany, with Andreas
Wohler saddling the progressive marathon runner Red Cardinal
(Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). Second in the G1 Preis von Europa over a
mile and a half at Cologne in September, Australian Bloodstock
Stable=s dark bay beat Nearly Caught (Ire) (New Approach {Ire})
in the two-mile G2 Oleander-Rennen at Hoppegarten on May 14
before following up in the GIII Belmont Gold Cup Invitational at
that trip on June 9.

Hey Gaman (near) just up in the Denford | Racing Post photo
FURTHER DECLARATION After a satisfactory return to action in the G1 Phoenix S. a
week ago, >TDN Rising Star= Declarationofpeace (War Front) is
back in Kildare on Sunday for the G3 Qatar Racing and
Equestrian Club Curragh S. Now sporting a tongue-tie and
blinkers, the imposing bay, who was disappointing when last of
22 in Royal Ascot=s Listed Windsor Castle S. on June 20, was
reappearing after a subsequent absence when seventh of eight
in the Phoenix and can be expected to be sharper this time.
There are some smart fillies in attendance and one unexposed
one who is held in high regard by trainer Andrew Slattery in
Emadee (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}), who beat the subsequent winner
Brick By Brick (Ire) (Big Bad Bob {Ire}) in a five-furlong maiden on
her only start at Naas on July 26. AIt=s a big step up, but I=d be
expecting a very good run from her,@ he said. AShe=s improved a
lot from the run in Naas. She worked last Tuesday and looked
the part, so we=re looking forward to seeing what she can do.
The question mark would be the ground. It was nearly good-to-
firm when she won in Naas and there=s rain around, but Declan
McDonogh feels she=ll like a bit of cut in the ground. If she
handles the ground, I think the rest of them will have had
enough of her by the time they=ve finished with her.@

Hey Gaman had shown some quality when winning two six-
furlong conditions races at Yarmouth July 6 and at Newmarket
last time July 29, on the latter occasion dispensing a five-length
beating to the dual listed runner-up Roussel (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}).
Ninth in the June 24 Listed Chesham S. at Royal Ascot and 12th
in the Listed July S. at Newmarket July 13, the bay showed no
diminution in his enthusiasm for the game when leading from
pillar to post to register a first black-type success. Working hard
in front to battle the elements as Martin Harley opted to stretch
his rivals, he had to contend with the promising Sandown
maiden winner Red Mist from the furlong pole but toughed it
out to hold sway in the photo. AIt was tough out there--the
testing ground was one thing, but the headwind was another,@
his jockey said. AThe second pressed me a long way down, so it
was a good performance from a good horse. He=s got a big heart
and it rode like a good race.@

Trainer James Tate has a useful collection of 2-year-olds and
will be moving Hey Gaman up in class now. AHe has always
worked really well and although I was disappointed with a
couple of his runs, it turns out he likes it soft,@ he explained.
AThere was nothing good enough to lead him today and I felt the
second had the advantage of slipstreaming him, so the best
horse won. He=ll go for a seven-furlong group race next and we
hope he=ll get a mile next year. I=d be nervous about running him
on ground with no mention of soft in the description.@ Red
Mist=s trainer Simon Crisford was far from disheartened by the
outcome and said, AI am delighted with his run. He is obviously
very inexperienced and he put in a huge effort there. He
handled that ground and that was not an issue. He would prefer
better ground, as then his turn of foot comes into play. He=s in
the [Sept. 16 G2] Champagne at Doncaster and that is a
consideration. Sheikh Ahmed will make a plan for him.@
Hey Gaman is the first foal out of the G3 International Istanbul
Trophy runner-up Arsaadi, who proved the leading performer
for Arsad who in turn is a half-sister to three black-type winners
headed by the G2 King=s Stand S. and G3 King George S. winner
The Tatling (Ire) (Perugino). Also from the family of the stakes
winner Billy Allen (Ire) (Night Shift), Arsaadi has a yearling
full-brother to the winner to follow.

of that rival who she had also beaten last time, the 5-2 favourite
hit the line with a touch more comfort than the official margin of
a short head suggests. The dam, who captured the G3 Marsh

sway from the break in this three-runner test.
Pushed along with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining, the 8-11 chalk
entered the final eighth with a comfortable buffer and extended
his margin of superiority under minimal urging in the closing
stages, gearing down late to stop the clock five lengths ahead of
Simmy=s Copshop (GB) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}). He is out of

Francesco Bere improved off a debut sixth going six furlongs at
La Teste de Buch June 7 to gradute upped one panel back there
July 23 and continued on an upward trajectory with a narrow
verdict in this black-type bow. Slipping from an early second to
race in third at halfway, he made smooth progress in the
straight to challenge inside the final quarter mile and kept on
well under a late drive to inhale Stage Magic on the line for a
career high. AHe won a good maiden at La Teste de Buch last
time, the form was solid and I felt he had improved a lot since
then,@ commented trainer and part-owner Didier Guillemin. AHe
proved his class today and won in courageous fashion. He will
now step up to Group company, but I don=t yet know which one.

Winx Blows Start, Wins Anyway cont. from p1
AWhat else can I say? She is just a freak,@ Bowman said. AShe
can be fractious and threw herself around when the gates
opened. I was a bit worried going past the 700 metres the way
the track conditions are. They are really running slick times. I
thought it was probably mathematically impossible but there
was nothing I could do about it. I just had to rely on the engine I
know is in her. If I took off early to get closer I would have run
out of gas. I just had to have confidence in her and ride her to
win the race. I was stuck back there and I was thinking this isn=t
good, I don=t like to be here, but it was an amazing feeling the
last 200 metres.@
It was a one-two for trainer Chris Waller, who said, AHugh
never panicked. When you put the reins in his hands you know
you=ve got the right man aboard. He realised he had to make up
a bit of ground and used the full length of the straight to do it.
Of the runner-up Foxplay, he added, AShe=s had everything
Winx has had. They went out together 16 weeks ago to spell
together. They did the same pre-training. They live together. It
was very good they went one-two and very good they finished
that way around.@
Waller confirmed Winx is likely to return in two weeks for the
G2 Chelmsford S. Her key spring target is a third straight win in
the G1 Cox Plate in October.
Also at Royal Randwick on Saturday, 3-year-old Fastnet Rock
(Aus) filly Formality (Aus) went gate-to-wire to win the G2 Silver
Shadow S. (video). The Lindsay Park-trained, Coolmore-owned
filly won last season=s G3 Chairman=s S. and was third in the
G1 Blue Diamond S. (Return to p1)
HARTNELL WINS IN MELBOURNE The connections of Group 1-winning gelding Hartnell (GB)
(Authorized {Ire}) have opted to keep him in Melbourne for the
spring to avoid Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}), and that move paid
dividends on Saturday as the 6-year-old cruised to victory in the
G2 PB Lawrence S. at Caulfield for Godolphin and trainer James
Cummings. Second to Winx on four occasions last year, including
the G1 Cox Plate and G1 Queen Elizabeth S., Hartnell was
recording his first win on Saturday since the Oct. 2 G1 Turnbull
S. Racing a keen second behind Charmed Harmony (Aus)
(Hussonet) under Craig Williams with Tosen Stardom (Jpn)
(Deep Impact {Jpn}) on his heels and Group 1 winner Black
Heart Bart (Aus) (Blackfriars {Aus}) behind that rival, Hartnell
needed just a pair of reminders with the whip in the lane to
overtake Charmed Harmony and draw clear by 2 1/4 lengths.
Black Heart Bart made a mild rally to be third, and was found to
be mildly lame post-race.
"The team was very confident today and the horse delivered--
that win is even better than it looks," Williams told
Racenet.com.au. "He was on his wrong leg all the way and off
the bend but he was just very dominant and there's more to
come. The experience around here just makes him a more
seasoned horse."
Next up for Hartnell will be the G1 Makybe Diva S. on Sept. 16.
Also at Caulfield on Saturday, last season=s G1 Blue Diamond S.
winner Catchy (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) was beaten a neck by
Crown Witness (Aus) (Star Witness {Aus}) in the G3 Quezette S.
while making her first start since finishing last in a boggy
G1 Golden Slipper on Mar. 18. Three-year-old Snitzel (Aus) colt
Jukebox (Aus) extended his unbeaten record to three with a
neck score in the G3 Vain S., and G1 Darley Goodwood S. winner
Vega Magic (Aus) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) strengthened his Everest
claims with a win in the Listed Regal Roller S.
A crowd of 10,688 attended Royal Randwick on Saturday,
where Winx made her seasonal debut | Bronwen Healy
“I thought it was probably mathematically impossiblebut there was nothing I could do about it. I just had to
rely on the engine I know is in her.”

COLLECTED BESTSARROGATE FOR BAFFERTEXACTA IN PAC CLASSIC
It was no surprise that Hall of Famer Bob Baffert saddled thetop two finishers in Saturday=s GI TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar.However, the order in which they finished surely surprised manyracing fans as Collected (City Zip) scored a narrow triumph overhis champion stablemate Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) to registerhis first Grade I success and secure a spot in the gate for the GI Breeders= Cup Classic. Despite finishing a lackluster fourth lasttime in this venue=s GII San Diego H. July 22, Arrogate washammered down to 3-5 favoritism and Collected was sent off asthe 3-1 co-second-choice along with Accelerate (Lookin atLucky), who sprung an 8-1 upset in the San Diego with his 8 1/2-length victory. Collected seized the early advantage with Accelerate glued tohis hip and Arrogate sitting a close third to that one=s outsidethrough early fractions of :23.76 and :47.19. Arrogate began toback out of it a bit at that point, but still retained third asCollected continued to cruise along on the front end, clockingthree-quarters in 1:11.06. The top three were well clear of therest of the field rounding the far turn and Collected began toskip away from his pursuers entering the lane. ThoughAccelerate kept plugging away, he never truly threatened, butArrogate began to show renewed interest as Smith floated himout a few paths in mid-stretch. The ATDN Rising Star@ kicked intogear, opening up his massive stride in the final furlong, but hisrally came too late and Collected hit the line a half-length clearof his superstar stablemate. Arrogate covered 51 more feet thanthe winner and clocked his final quarter in :24.90 compared toCollected=s final quarter of :25.42. Cont. p3
ELATE TOPS >RISING STAR= EXACTA IN
ALABAMA ATDN Rising Star@ Elate (Medaglia d=Oro) just missed behind
Abel Tasman (Quality Road) last time in Saratoga=s GI Coaching
Club American Oaks July 23, but returned with a vengeance
Saturday, romping home to an impressive 5 1/2-length victory in
the prestigious GI Alabama S. Racing in mid-pack, the 4-1 shot
kept close tabs on pacesetting fellow ATDN Rising Star@ It Tiz
Well (Arch) through opening splits of :23.46 and :46.96. As
three-quarters went up in 1:10.92, GI Mother Goose S. heroine
Unchained Melody (Smart Strike), who had been stalking from
second throughout, suddenly dropped to the back and was
pulled up, and Elate and Queen=s Plate victress Holy Helena
(Ghostzapper) moved into a joint second. Drawing even with It
Tiz Well turning for home, Elate swiftly seized command in early
stretch and cruised clear to win as she pleased. It Tiz Well held
on for second over GI Acorn S. runner-up Salty (Quality Road).

AArrogate, at least he tried today,@ winning trainer Bob Baffertsaid. AHe=s getting there, but I think that when I ran him in theSan Diego it messed up his psyche a little bit. Elate | Sarah K. Andrew
Alabama cont.
Mott continued, AWe said then that she probably wouldn't be
on her game for the Kentucky Oaks, that she was more of an
Alabama filly and that's exactly how it worked out.@
Mott added, AI just wanted the win for the filly and for the
connections. Ms. [Adele] Dilschneider is such a great person.
She's just a wonderful lady, one of the great women of the turf.
You couldn't have a better owner. She loves her horses and she
was looking forward to this as much as I was.@
AWhen I got to the three-eighths pole, I felt I had a lot of horse
underneath me,@ winning rider Jose Ortiz said. AI just went along
with her and as we entered the stretch, she really got going and
I didn't look back, I kept riding. It's a Grade I and I didn't want to
look back for anybody, I just focused on riding her to the finish.@
Jockey Joel Rosario offered an update on Unchained Melody,
who was pulled up and vanned off, saying, "I had to keep asking
her to just hold my position and she was there and at one point,
she wasn't. Everybody was getting away from me. She was
steady, just didn't want to do it. After that, I just had to pull her
up and make sure she was OK. She was feeling fine physically. I
don't know, she just got tired. I don't know what happened."
Elate earned Rising Star honors after an ultra-impressive
12 1/2-length graduation on debut at Aqueduct Nov. 26 and
checked in second as the heavy favorite next out in Tampa Bay=s
Suncoast S. Feb. 11. A late-running third as the chalk behind It
Tiz Well in Oaklawn=s GIII Honeybee S. Mar. 11, the dark bay was
pulled up and vanned off in Keeneland=s GI Ashland S. Apr. 8.
Mott regrouped after that start, giving Elate a class break in a
first-level allowance at Churchill Downs May 5, where she
finished second over a sloppy track.
The Hall of Famer remained conservative, sending the
homebred to Delaware=s Light Hearted S. June 15, and was
rewarded when she romped home to a 5 1/2-length victory.
Stepped back up to Grade I company in the Spa=s CCA Oaks next
out July 23, Elate gave divisional leader Abel Tasman a fight
down the stretch, coming up a head short at the wire, but
finishing 3 1/4 lengths clear of Salty. Ortiz lodged a claim of foul
against Mike Smith and Abel Tasman for crowding Elate in the
stretch, but the results stood as is after a stewards inquiry.
Pedigree Notes:
Elate, who is the 18th Grade I winner for her sire, was bred on
the same Medagalia d=Oro/Forty Niner cross that is responsible
for Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra, two-time champion
Songbird and MGISW turfer New Money Honey, who finished
fifth in this first try on dirt. Her stakes-winning dam Cheery is by
Distorted Humor, whose daughters have produced the likes of
New Money Honey, champion Arrogate and MGISWs
Constitution and Practical Joke.
Claiborne=s Seth W. Hancock purchased Elate=s third dam, the
Paul Mellon-bred MGSW & GISP Wild Applause (Northern
Dancer), for $1.025 million at the 1992 Keeneland November
sale. She produced MGSW Roar, who is the broodmare sire of
Rachel Alexandra, and Elate=s second dam Yell (A.P. Indy),
winner of the 2003 GII Davona Dale S. and GIII Raven Run S. and
third behind champion Bird Town in that year=s GI Kentucky
Oaks. In addition to Cheery, Yell is also responsible for GISP
Chide (Blame).
Elate is the first foal out of Cheery, who failed to get back in
foal to War Front, but produced a colt named Haunt
(Ghostzapper) in 2016 and a Blame colt Mar. 8 of this year. The
8-year-old mare was bred back to Medaglia d=Oro this term.

John Oxley=s Dream Dancing got the most favorable of bobsand became the 23rd Grade I winner for her sire in Saturday=sDel Mar Oaks. Julien Leparoux wasted no time at all snagging Dream Dancingback into the latter third of the field from their double-digitdraw and the duo was third-last with a circuit to travel. Riddenvery quietly while allowed to settle into her stride, thehomebred held her position through the middle furlongs andstill had just two of her rivals behind her as they raced midwayon the second turn. With Leparoux waiting for just the rightmoment to release the hand brakes, Dream Dancing was pulledto the outside of Beau Recall and was fanned about seven wideto deliver her challenge with a furlong and a half to travel.Roused right-handed at the eighth pole, she joined Beau Recallto that one=s outside, and although she trailed in the final jumpprior to the wire and in the first jump past the line, DreamDancing dropped her head when it mattered most. MadamDancelot closed from last to be a very good third, whileSandringham H. winner Con Te Partiro (Scat Daddy) closed offwell to be fourth after getting shuffled back leaving the three-eighths marker. AThe last time I rode her, I asked her at the three-eighths andshe got a little weary at the end,@ Leparoux explained. AThis timeI tried to wait as long as I could and she was still strong at thefinish. This feels good; a win is a win, no matter where you get it.@

ATDN Rising Star@ Proctor=s Ledge made an eye-catching late
move to score her second consecutive graded victory at
Saratoga Saturday. Away well, the homebred bided her time in a
ground-saving fourth as fellow ATDN Rising Star@ Coasted
(Tizway) ticked off comfortable opening splits of :24.39 and
:50.03 with Party Boat and La Coronel (Colonel John) close
behind. MGSW La Coronel ranged up menacingly as Coasted hit
the 3/8ths pole in 1:14.11, but Party Boat and Proctor=s Ledge
were right on her tail. Those four lined up across the track with
Proctor=s Ledge running widest of all and Uni continuing to trail,
but Coasted soon threw in the towel leaving the other three to
fight it out. While La Coronel and Party Boat remained locked
together, Proctor=s Ledge hit another gear and unleashed a
furious late turn of foot, powering clear of her rivals and holding
off a bold rally from Uni to score. Party Boat edged out La
Coronel to be third and Coasted finished last of the quintet.

Owner Patricia Moseley leads Proctor=s Ledge & Javier Castellano into the winner=s circle | Sarah K. Andrew
As for her next start, the conditioner said, "I don't know about
the Breeders' Cup, but you have to think about a race like the
[GI QEII Challenge Cup at Keeneland Oct. 14] next for her."
Winning rider Javier Castellano was equally pleased, saying,
AYou could tell the pace was comfortable. She was laid back. I
liked the way she finished. I love the way she runs. No matter
where you put her, she'll always show up.@
A second out graduate at Gulfstream Jan. 28 at odds of 49-1,
Proctor=s Ledge earned her Rising Star nod when circling the
field for an impressive last-to-first optional claimer victory in
Hallandale Feb. 18. Third to La Coronel in Keeneland=s one-mile
GIII Appalachian S. Apr. 13, the bay was fourth to that rival in
the GIII Edgewood S. at Churchill Downs May 5. Completing the
exacta behind fellow ATDN Rising Star@ Sweeping Paddy (Paddy

June 17, Proctor=s Ledge charged home to a decisive victory in
this venue=s GIII Lake George S. July 21 while receiving Lasix for
the first time and a new rider in Eclipse winner Castellano.
Pedigree Notes:
Proctor=s Ledge was bred and is owned by Patricia Moseley,
the former chairwoman of Suffolk Downs and widow of
prominent Massachusetts racing figure James Moseley. James
Moseley campaigned Proctor=s Ledge=s third dam Drumtop to a
number of stakes victories and course-record-breaking
performances going long on the turf, and her bred her second
dam Aliata in partnership with legendary horseman Paul Mellon.
Dam Archstone=s best performance was a runner-up finish in
Belmont=s Sabin S. over 10 turfy panels for Patricia Moseley in
2008. Archstone is responsible for the unraced juvenile filly
Hadriana (Bodemeister) and a yearling filly by Street Sense. The

gray tracked from fourth as Mr. Roary (Scat Daddy) ticked off
early fractions of :24.40, :49.40 and 1:14.88. Slipping through up
the rail at the top of the stretch, Hunt skipped clear and held off
a late rally from Itsinthepost to score.
"It was a masterful ride,@ winning trainer Phil D=Amato said.
AFlavien [Prat] just bided his time, let the race develop a little,
found a seam on the inside and turned him loose. He got it

"The slow pace helped us; he like that, coming from the
shorter race,@ Prat said. AWe were close up, too. He likes to be
among horses; covered up. I followed Gary [Stevens on
Ashleyluvssugar] through the hole [at the top of the stretch],
then dropped down. He had it from there."

Conquest Panthera had been knocking on the door at the
graded level all year, and he finally broke through here against a
pretty salty-looking bunch. Unhurried from the blocks, the
lightly raced 5-year-old tugged his way up three or four deep to
sit perched in fourth around the bend. Ridden very confidently
as pacesetter Dowse=s Beach maintained a clear advantage at
the head of the lane, he lugged in a bit to midstretch, but kept
on plugging away and wore down the pacesetter in the waning
stages.
ABy the time the gates fly, he was relaxing,@ said winning rider
Patrick Husbands, who piloted Kaigun (Northern Afleet) to
victory in this event in 2014 for the same connections. AHe was
just taking me for a nice little journey so I was happy.@
Named a >TDN Rising Star= for a successful debut on the Del
Mar synthetic in 2014, Conquest Panthera was seventh behind
American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) in that September=s
GI FrontRunner S. routing on the dirt. He made just one start in
2015--a sixth-place finish in a grassy Saratoga allowance--but
took a local event going a sixteenth shorter just days before he
went through the ring as part of the Conquest Stables dispersal
at KEENOV >16. His trainer Mark Casse signed for him that day
for $100,000, and he resurfaced carrying the Gary Barber hot
pink when annexing a Gulfstream optional claimer over GSW All
Included (Include) in January. Third in the one-mile GIII Canadian
Turf S. in Hallandale Mar. 4, he filled the same slot--beaten just
a neck at 27-1--in the GI Maker=s 46 Mile S. at Keeneland
Apr. 14. Eighth in the GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic S. on
GI Kentucky Derby Day May 6, he had been freshened since
another third-place run in the GII Wise Dan S. back under the
Twin Spires June 17.
AThe only two bad races from looking at the form were when
he went long,@ said Husbands. AYou take away that, he had two
Grade I races there and he didn=t get beat far. He showed that
he was the best horse today.@
Calgary Cat (Cowtown Cat), Canada=s champion sprinter of
2014, collapsed and died after the race.
Pedigree Notes:
Lastofthesummerwine was acquired for $135,000 at the 2008
OBS June sale by Ken and Sarah Ramsey, but made only one
start--a runner-up effort sprinting on the Keeneland synthetic in
October of that season for Wesley Ward. Conquest Panthera
was her first foal, and she subsequently sold to Gatewood Bell=s
Cromwell Bloodstock on behalf of Ward carrying Ward=s future
GII Amsterdam S. runner-up Maniacal (Kitten=s Joy).
Lastofthesummerwine has been represented this year by Happy
Like a Fool (Distorted Humor), a romping debut winner in
Lexington in April for Ward who was second in the G2 Queen
Mary S. at Royal Ascot June 21. Lastofthesummerwine produced
a Super Saver colt in 2016 and an American Pharoah filly this
year before being bred to Distorted Humor.

The progressive Tricky Escape earned the first graded stakes
win of her career with a rallying score in the Saturday feature at
the Jersey Shore. Never worse than fourth in 11 career starts,
the dark bay bided her time behind moderate fractions and was
going best of all late to claim a narrow victory.
In a bit tight between horses toward the back of the pack
behind a crawling initial quarter-mile in :26.09, Tricky Escape
checked out of that spot and continued on under a firm hold
down the backside as the leaders completed a half-mile in
:50.75. Shaken up approaching the far turn, she saved ground
entering the stretch, split horses once again in midstretch and
kicked on strongly to cross the wire in front. Light Up Our World
tagged pacesetting Gianna=s Dream for place honors.
Ridden exclusively by Forest Boyce in her first 10 trips to post,
Tricky Escape was piloted by veteran Chris DeCarlo Saturday.
AI wanted to be up close, but when we broke a few horses
came over on me and then I had to check going into the first
turn, so I wound up in the back,@ said DeCarlo. AOn the backside,
the field cleared me and I was able to get over to the rail. I had
to take so much of a hold of her early, I was a little afraid I was
going to discourage her, but that definitely wasn=t the case.@
The filly=s most recent win came in a grassy optional claimer at
Laurel Apr. 23, and in the interim she earned a pair of fourth-
place finishes in the June 3 GIII Eatontown S. locally and the
July 8 GIII Robert G. Dick Memorial S. She entered the Violet off
a runner-up finish in a rained-off-the-turf allowance race at
Delaware July 29. Her win Saturday marked the first graded
stakes success for both Lynn Ashby, who trains a large number
of Arabian horses in Delaware, as well as owner Jon Marshall.
Pedigree Notes:
Tricky Escape is a half to Felifran (Discreet Cat), who ran
second in the 2015 GIII Palm Beach S. Second dam Royal
Deception (Sovereign Dancer) is a half-sister to GISW All Fired
Up (Timeless Moment). The winner RNA=d for $65,000 as a
Keeneland September yearling, while two-time stakes-winning
dam Island Escape sold for $2,000 at this year=s Keeneland
January sale in foal to Stay Thirsty. That foal hit the ground this
spring, joining a yearling full-brother to the winner foaled in
2016.

Chief Know It All kicked off the year with a score for trainer
Brad Cox in a $62,500 optional claimer at Oaklawn Jan. 27 and
failed to fire next time out in the Feb. 20 GIII Southwest S. and
had to settle for 10th. Back in the winner=s circle in a $100,000
optional claimer over seven furlongs at Keeneland Apr. 8, he
was a solid third--beaten 2 3/4 lengths--at Churchill Downs
June 3. Dropped in for a $100,000 tag most recently in an
8 1/2-furlong turf test at the Louisville oval June 30, Chief Know
It All was snapped up by the current connections in what now
looks like a bargain.
Well supported here, the grey was in the mix early and didn=t
let the leaders out of his sight through early fractions of :24.03,
:48.90 and 1:14.57. Eager to engage the leader Double Bear
down the backstretch the second time, Chief Know It All poked
his head in front after a mile in 1:40.34, while flanked by Double
Bear and the encroaching Trouper John, drew away from the
rest in tandem with those rivals, inched into the lead turning for
home and fought tooth and nail down the stretch to fend off
those game rivals for a first graded score. The win gave jockey
Rico Walcott his fourth Canadian Derby.
CHINA EQUINE CULTURAL FESTIVAL KICKS
OFF IN ORDOS By Amanda Duckworth
ORDOS, China--The 2017 China Equine Cultural Festival kicked
off Saturday night with the CECF Ordos Welcome Party. Themed
"Glamour Night," the evening's festivities celebrated the
upcoming racing meet Sunday, and both events remain an
important part of Teo Ah Khing's vision for bringing racing to
China.
"With a mantra of 'Bring the World to China, China to the
World,' we are blessed to welcome guests, partners, sponsors,
jockeys, and racing officials from all across China as well as from
Europe, America, Asia, Australasia, and the Caribbean," said Teo,
the chairman and founder of the China Horse Club. "The
diversity of this event is instrumental in creating wonderful
occasions and interactions."
Starting with drinks and appetizers, the welcome party served
as a way to let all of the participants mix and mingle before
turning their attention to racing. After being ushered into a
dramatically lit room, Eden Harrington, the vice president of the
China Horse Club, served as the host for the evening.
During the party, awards were handed out; art work was
auctioned off for a charity; traditional dress was displayed in a
fashion show; sponsors, trainers, owners, and jockeys were
thanked; and a new Yitai desert song titled "Heroes Are Flying"
debuted.
"There was a time when people doubted China, when they
doubted that China would become a racing center," Harrington
said. "There was a time when they didn't believe. But then
again, there was a time when televisions were only in black and
white, and mobile phones only allowed you to make phone
calls." Cont. p13

CECF cont.
Among those listening to Harrington's words were Elliott
Walden, the president of WinStar Farm and a regular partner
with the China Horse Club, as well as representatives from the
likes of the Australian Turf Club, New Zealand Bloodstock, Goffs,
Tattersalls, Inglis, Magic Millions, Ocala Breeders' Sales
Company, and Keeneland.
Additionally, renowned artists Li Xiaoling, Cai Zhisong, Shize,
Huqing and Pushi--who each contributed their work for the
charity auction--were part of the 250 or so people in
attendance.
The highest honor of the night, the Lifetime Achievement
Award, went to John Warren, who is both the bloodstock
advisor for Queen Elizabeth II as well as the chairman for the
China Horse Club's International Advisory Council.
First held in 2013, the CECF has grown exponentially as Khing
works to make Thoroughbred racing an accepted sport in China.
As the signature event created by China Horse Club, the CECF
has been designed to cater to the social and business
requirements of the club's elite membership group while
appealing to a mass market audience through Thoroughbred
racing and other cultural events.
In 2016, the first year the CECF was held in Ordos, the
four-race card drew over 20,000 people, which surprised even
the organizers. Their expectations for this year's races remain
modest, although the indicators are there that another large
crowd will be on hand.
"We take pride in whatever we plan and execute," said Teo.
"Anything more than a crowd of 10,000 is deemed as a major
event in communist China. We did not expect that our CECF the
first year in Ordos would draw more than 20,000. We expected
8,000. We purposely wanted 8,000 because that falls below the
rudder, and we wanted to classify as a small event, but it
exploded into a large event.
"There is a lot of pressure this year. The crowd is just one
indicator. I think the quality of the event itself should continue
to evolve and take care of the needs of the people who come."
Part of the Bigger Picture Having the CECF is an integral part of meeting the lifestyle
promises of the China Horse Club to its members, but so is
success at major racing events around the world.
It started with a bang in Europe with champion Australia
(Galileo), and followed with Australian Horse of the Year
Dissident (Sebring). This year, the club is making headlines in
the United States with GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Abel Tasman
(Quality Road), who is a current front runner for end of year
honors. In all, the club has won more than 250 races worldwide.
"We try to explain to all of our members to not get over
excited, but so far I think in our five-year program the word to
explain it is we are very lucky," said Teo. "For example, our
specific plan for the United States spanned three to five years,
but within two years things happened. Here came Abel Tasman
and Good Samaritan (Harlan's Holiday) and the members got
excited. That's the most important thing. Our program in the
U.S. has had to be fast-tracked.
"Just like Australia--the first year we enter racing, we get the
English Derby winner. We were caught and surprised. We
learned from the Australia experience, and now I think from
Abel and others, we have learned and we have something to be
proud of."
Looking forward, the China Horse Club has its eye on attending
both the Breeders' Cup World Championships in California as
well as the first ever running of The Everest in Australia, which
aims to be the richest turf race in the world. First though, comes
the humbler but vitally important day of races at Ordos.
"I think Breeders' Cup in November we are going to see some
healthy crowds, and before that, we are talking about perhaps
taking part in the experience for the Everest in Sydney," said
Teo. "I think October and November will be two highlights for
us, after our meet here.
"The China Horse Club is now a brand, and they are now
asking whether they can join. We still have a youth membership,
and they say, 'What is the age?' and I say, 'It is 65 and below.'
We have been systematically, step-by-step introducing the
concept of racing to China."

"He worked unbelievable today," trainer Joe Sharp said. "He

the Travers will be made Monday.
AIt went good,@ Brown said. AI won't make any decision yet
until I talk to the owners. I=m going to give myself until Monday.
I want to see how the horse comes out of the work, take time to

MALIBU MOON FILLY A >STAR= AT DEL MAR
The Simon Callaghan barn is very well-stocked these days, and
it unveiled another promising runner on the GI Pacific Classic S.
undercard Saturday in the form of juvenile filly Moonshine
Memories (Malibu Moon), who was named a >TDN Rising Star.=
Given a 37-10 chance off a fairly unassuming worktab, the
$650,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga grad broke a half-step slow but
quickly burst through horses to grab the lead. Challenged from
her inside through an opening quarter in :21.88, she was joined
on her right flank by odds-on Tyfosha (Flatter) exiting the bend.
Going better--and straighter--than that foe as they pulled far
clear of the rest of the field, she was a length in front of her
main rival at the wire while stopping the timer in 1:10.08 and
galloping out all by herself. Tyfosha was 11 1/2 lengths clear of
fellow Doug O=Neill pupil Dr. Ann (Eskendereya) in third. While
she hasn=t broken through yet, Tyfosha seems to be a good
barometer for other runners in this division. The $410,000
OBSMAR grad was second at 1-2 on debut behind subsequent
Landaluce S. romper Surrender Now (Morning Line), and filled
the same slot behind >Rising Star= Just a Smidge (Into Mischief)
on opening day here July 19. Moonshine Memories is a half-
sibling to precocious Indian Evening (Indian Charlie), SW & GSP,
$140,172, who sired this year=s very speedy Northern California-
based stakes-winning juvenile Kimberlea K.
Unenchantedevening, a half to 1997's champion 2-year-old and
Horse of the Year Favorite Trick (Phone Trick), produced a filly
by Distorted Humor in 2016 followed by a colt by Honor Code
this term. She was bred back to Malibu Moon.

Money=soncharlotte entered this rich contest riding a three-
race winning streak, including Monmouth Park=s Lady=s Secret S.
July 2 and GIII Molly Pitcher S. July 30. Sent off as the second
choice, the George Hall colorbearer sat a tracking second
through fractions of :23.02 and :48.28, gained a narrow
advantage on the far turn and kept on finding in the stretch to
hold the GI Delaware H. runner-up safe. AThe word I heard
about Thistledown was that it was a little bit of a sandy-based
track,@ winning trainer Kelly Breen said. AThis filly,
two-turning-three, won at Calder, and you can=t get much more
of a sandier track, so I really felt confident coming out here, and
she proved herself. She shipped in yesterday and showed up
today. Paco [Lopez] rides a nice race.@ Click for the

Tribalist debuted at Del Mar exactly four years prior to Friday
night, but has only managed to make four subsequent starts
with a sporadic racing schedule. He=s made the most of his
abbreviated career, however, and added a stakes win to his
name with a score in the Friday feature. Entering the Green
Flash off a three-race winning streak comprised of races in July
2014, August 2015 and July 2016, Tribalist took a reasonable
amount of support at the windows and was shuffled to the rear
of the pack leaving the gate. Quickly advancing up the rail
behind a quarter-mile in :22.19, he paused briefly turning for
home while angling off the rail, dove back down to that path in
the drive and uncorked a strong rally to get up in the final
strides. The winner=s dam is also responsible for an unraced
juvenile colt by Uh Oh Bango named Ultimate Bango, as well as
a yearling filly by that same sire. She foaled a filly by Haimish Hy
