PERFORMANCE NOTES
Perfect Day is a wonderfully evocative song by British composer Colin Towns. It famously featured as the theme song to the animated TV series The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends, which aired from May 1992 to June 1995. Miriam Stockley provided the vocals for the original soundtrack recording.
I have fond memories enjoying this beautifully animated series and Beatrix Potter’s books full of unassuming, flawed, sinister, and endearing characters. A highlight of the series is Colin Towns’ pastoral and romantic score. The quiet and steady piano ostinato of Perfect Day sets a dream-like reverie. Musically, it moves between moments of introspection and spaciousness. The text suitably conjures up the picturesque landscape of Beatrix Potter’s home in the Lake District, United Kingdom.
Perfect Day prompts a variety of responses. Is it nostalgic, melancholic, haunting or hopeful? Choral singers and conductors alike may reach their own conclusions. I hope to acquaint this indelible song for the enjoyment of choirs and audiences for generations to come.
