yourJourney Begins...Welcome to Lancashire’s ‘Your Perfect Day’ brochure and congratulations on your forthcoming marriage. I hope this brochure will provide you with all the information you need over the next few months.

Whether or not you live in Lancashire getting married or forming a Civil Partnership is a very special occasion and choosing your venue is very important. From historic buildings, stone-built villages, coastal contrasts, rural retreats to beautiful scenery and riverside settings, Lancashire has everything to create the perfect setting for your ceremony.

In Lancashire we have more than one hundred premier venues that have been approved for ceremonies. We also have nine registration ceremony rooms spread across the county.

Whatever your arrangements, whatever your choice, we will do our very best to ensure that your day is everything you dream of. If you need any further advice please do not hesitate to contact any of our ceremonies officers.

The important bits you really have to do!First, book your ceremony with one of our Ceremonies Officers. You will be required to pay the full fee at the time you book your ceremony. This includes a non-refundable administration fee. There is also a statutory fee to be paid when you give your legal notice to be married or form a civil partnership. You can book your ceremony up to three years in advance. Please call 0300 123 6705 to book a ceremony. Three months before the date of your ceremony you should both give your legal notice of marriage at your local registration office. Giving your notice of marriage will ensure the legalities for your marriage are completed in good time for your ceremony to proceed.

You will need to produce certain documents at your local registration office when you both give your legal notice of marriage. Your local registration office will

be able to advise you about what you have to produce or you could visit www.lancashire.gov.uk/ births-marriages-and-deaths/ceremonies/ where a full list of documents you will need is available. Marriage in England and Wales is the union of two people who are:• Free to legally marry ie not in a

marriage or civil partnership already• 16 years of age or older (individuals

who are aged 16 and 17 will need written consent from their parents or legal guardians)

If you wish to change your passport to your new name before the event you can do this up to three months before. Your new passport will only be valid from the day of your wedding please bear this in mind if you are travelling abroad before your wedding date. To change your passport you will need to provide the person conducting your ceremony with a PD2 form to complete. The PD2 form is available at any post office or online at www.passport.gov.uk.

A Civil Partnership is a legal commitment, which can be formed by two people, giving them the ability to obtain legal recognition for their relationship. Couples who form a Civil Partnership will have a new legal status: Civil Partners.

Couples who form a Civil Partnership will be treated equally in a wide range of legal matters with couples who enter into a marriage.

In order to form a Civil Partnership in the UK, both partners must:• Not be in a Civil Partnership or marriage

already• Be 16 years of age or older in England and

Wales (individuals who are aged 16 and 17 will need written consent from their parents or legal guardians)

• Not be closely related

Converting a Civil Partnership to marriageThere are two ways to convert a Civil Partnership into a marriage• a one stage administrative process called

a ‘standard conversion’ • a two stage process where the conversion

is followed by a ceremony

The standard conversionThis is a one stage administrative process where you will both attend an appointment at a register office of your choice located in England and Wales to complete a declaration with details about you/partner and your Civil Partnership.

A conversion followed by a ceremonyThere are two stages to this type of conversion. The first part is where you will both need to attend an appointment at a register office of your choice located in England and Wales to prepare your declaration and for the Superintendent Registrar to check details about your Civil Partnership and evidence of identity and nationality.

The signing of the declaration can then be followed by a ceremony at a venue where your marriage is registered, and a marriage certificate can then be issued. The second part is the celebration at a venue where you will sign the declaration in front of family and friends.

PARTNERSHIPSCIVIL

Church of England orChurch in WalesIf you wish to be married in the Church of England or Church in Wales you should first speak to the Vicar of the church in which you wish to marry.

You can usually qualify to marry in a Church of England church if you can show that one of the persons intending to marry:• was baptised or prepared for

confirmation in that parish• had his or her usual place of residence

in that parish for a period of not less than six months

• regularly attended public worship in that parish for a period of not less than six months

• a parent during the lifetime of the person wishing to marry has had his or her usual place of residence in that parish for a period of not less than six months

• a parent or grandparent has been married in that parish.

Provided that you are both EEA nationals, the Vicar will arrange for the banns to be called and the common licence to be issued. Unless the Vicar specifically asks you to contact the registration service we would not expect to be involved in these wedding arrangements.

Other DenominationsSome religious buildings and churches require the attendance of a registrar at the ceremony, please ask the person responsible.

MARRIAGES...RELIGIOUS

THE CEREMONYSaying ‘I do’ in front of friends and family can be a nerve-racking event but our Registrars will be on hand to help you every step of the way. They will guide you through everything you need to do or say, so there is no need to worry about forgetting your lines or doing things in the wrong order!

The Registrar will see both partners privately to check that the details to be entered into the register are correct.

This is also an opportunity for you to ask any last minute questions. Once these checks have been made we can proceed with the ceremony.

The couple will be asked in turn to repeat a number of vows and promises you will have chosen in advance from our ceremony booklet. The Celebrant will speak quite slowly and reassure you both throughout the ceremony. After you have made your vows you and your witnesses will sign the legal marriage schedule. Any certificates you have ordered will be sent to you a few days after your ceremony.

Did you know flowers have meanings associated with them? Flowers form an important part of that special occasion in our lives. Everyone knows that a red rose stands for romantic love; however meanings are associated not only with roses but also with other flowers.

Many people assign their own personal meanings – a flower or colour that might remind them of a special event or moment in their lives. Did you know that each of the 17 different flower designs on William & Kate’s official Royal Wedding cake had its own individual meaning? Read on to know more about flower meanings and see if we have included your favourite flower:

ASTER symbolises patience. It is also indicative of a love of variety. It also symbolises elegance and daintiness.

CALLA LILY symbolises magnificence and beauty. White Calla lilies combine these two attributes with purity and innocence associated with the colour white to make it the perfect choice of flower in a wedding bouquet.

CARNATION symbolises pride and beauty. A red carnation symbolises love, pride and admiration; a white carnation symbolises innocence and pure love.

CHRYSANTHEMUM symbolises fidelity, optimism, joy and long life. A red chrysanthemum conveys love; a white chrysanthemum symbolises truth and loyal love.

DAISY symbolises innocence and purity. It conveys loyal love and “I will never tell”. Gerbera Daisy specifically conveys cheerfulness.

GERBERA belongs to the daisy family and therefore assumes the symbolism associated with the daisy flower. Gerbera specifically conveys cheerfulness.

HEATHER LAVENDER symbolises admiration, solitude and beauty while white heather symbolises protection and indicates that wishes will come true.

HYDRANGEA symbolises heartfelt emotions. It can be used to express gratitude for being understood.

IRIS symbolises eloquence. Purple iris is symbolic of wisdom and compliments. Blue iris symbolises faith and hope. Yellow iris symbolises passion while white iris symbolises purity.

ORCHIDS a symbol of the exotic beauty. It symbolises refinement, thoughtfulness and mature charm. It also symbolises proud and glorious femininity.

PEONY symbolises a happy life happy marriage, good health and prosperity.

ROSE symbolises love. It signifies love in its various forms. Its symbolism varies based on colour, variety and number.

STOCK symbolises lasting beauty and happy life. It is indicative of bonds of affection and is symbolic of promptness.

SWEET PEA indicates delicate pleasure and bliss. It is a flower symbolic of departure after having had a good time.

TULIP signifies a declaration of love. It also symbolises fame and perfect love.

The Lancashire Rose Suite is situated in Bow Lane, Preston and can accommodate 78 people and has disabled access. There is a walled garden area adjacent to the office which offers opportunity for photographs after the ceromony. There is a small pay and display car park on the corner of Arthur Street and Bow Lane with limited parking, maximum stay two hours. However, on Monday to Friday this is also used by people registering births and deaths. The nearest public car park is the Fishergate centre adjacent to the railway station.

Charter House is located in the historic West Lancashire market town of Ormskirk, it is a refurbished venue accommodating up to 50 people. The period building on Derby Street is the original home of West Lancashire Borough Council and the ceremony room has a lovely period feel, with high ceilings, ceiling roses and cornicing. Charter House has an attractive canopied

entrance with sandstone steps which provides an excellent area for photographs before and after your ceremony.

It has full disabled access, disabled parking and a public car park is available next to the building.

The ceremony room in Accrington is in the Mechanics Institute on Willow Street. The room in this impressive Victorian building has been beautifully refurbished and has retained many original features. The ceremony room accommodates 65 people and there is disabled access. Limited street parking is available and there are car parks close by.

Lyndhurst House is situated on Todmorden Road, Burnley. This building includes a large well decorated ceremony room catering for up to 70 people. It is fully accessible to meet the needs of disabled people and those with mobility problems. The building boasts a garden area for photographs and a car park.

The Lancaster ceremony room is in Georgian House on Queen Street. This Georgian listed building has a traditional ceremony room that accommodates 40 guests. There is disabled access to the premises and courtyard at the rear of the building. With original pillars and steps it provides an excellent backdrop for photographs. Limited street parking is available and there are car parks close by.

Devonshire House is situated on Devonshire Road, Chorley and can accommodate 74 people. This building offers couples the intimate atmosphere of a well decorated ceremony room. The building is fully accessible to meet the needs of disabled people and those with mobility problems. The building boasts a garden area for photographs and is located close to a large public car park.

The ceremony room at Fleetwood is in Fleetwood House above the registration office and library on North Albert Street. The tastefully decorated ceremony room can accommodate 50 guests. Disabled access is available by lift in the library. Limited street parking is available.

The ceremony room in Clitheroe is in Ribble House off Pimlico Road. The tastefully decorated ceremony room accommodates 40 guests and has disabled access. Ample free parking is available.

The ceremony room in St Annes is in the library. It is a small room accommodating just 15 people. There is disabled access and limited parking.
