Christopher Oaks Pleads Guilty (cont. from p1)

Fishman, Skelton and Cohen are drug distributors also among

the 27 indicted last year.

Vyskocil went on to ask Oakes if he raced in New York. Oakes

replied that he raced at Yonkers Raceway and admitted that he

used the drugs on his horses that raced there.

Vyskocil then asked Oakes why he gave the drugs to his horses.

He answered, ATo try to get an advantage and, hopefully, things

would do better.@

Oakes said the doping routine he had described began in early

2019 and concluded with his arrest in March, 2020.

According to the original indictment, Oakes played a central

role in the doping of the Navarro-trained top sprinter X Y Jet

(Kantharos), who died in January, 2020 under suspicious

circumstances.

The evidence against Oakes included conversations allegedly

captured on wiretaps between Navarro and Oakes in which

Oakes promises to supply Navarro with PEDs.

Oakes allegedly supplied Navarro with PEDs that were given to

X Y Jet, including a Ablocker@ PED. On Feb. 13, 2019, the same

day X Y Jet won an allowance race at Gulfstream, Navarro

instructed Oakes to enter the Gulfstream backstretch to

administer PEDs to the sprinter.

ADrive through,@ Navarro allegedly told Oakes. AIf they stop

you, you are an owner and you come to Navarro's barn.@

The government also charged that Oakes Acreated and

manufactured his own customized misbranded and adulterated

PEDs known as an undetectable 'drench' that would rapidly

increase a racehorse's performance during a race.@ Oakes went

on to tell Navarro Azero chance you get caught.@

Curlin to stand for $175K in 2022 | Sarah Andrew

According to the indictment, on Mar. 14, 2019, law

enforcement officers found multiple adulterated and

misbranded drugs in Oakes' barn in Pennsylvania, including PEDs

supplied by Fishman and Skelton. They also found pre-filled

unlabeled syringes.

Oakes owned a handful of Thoroughbreds before his arrest

and won 14 races. His horses were trained by Navarro. Oakes

was a prominent harness trainer with 1,875 career wins. He was

among several harness horsemen banned at the Meadowlands

by owner Jeff Gural.

GELDING IN >INHUMANE TREATMENT' CASE

SETTLES IN AT NEW HOME by T.D. Thornton

Food and Wine (War Front), the 5-year-old gelding whose

mistreatment for a bowed tendon resulted in a trio of Aimproper

or inhumane@ care rulings issued by the Delaware Park stewards

last Friday, is settling in at his new home, a rehab farm in

Townsend, Delaware, that serves as a satellite facility for

MidAtlantic Horse Rescue (MAHR).

AHe's very, very cool. He's just a real classy horse,@ said Beverly

Strauss, the co-founder and president of MAHR. AHe's in

beautiful condition except for his leg. It's just an unfortunate

situation and it's really sad, because it looks as if he's got some

talent but just ended up on the wrong side of the racetrack.@

Strauss said Food and Wine's owner, Jose Rosales, had asked

her for help in trying to get the gelding re-homed earlier this fall

by listing him on CANTER, but there were no takers.

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 8 OF 12 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • OCTOBER 21, 2021

AThey had called me about taking him a couple of weeks ago,

but we've been totally swamped,@ Strauss said. AWe do the

aftercare for Delaware Park and we help with the Beyond the

Wire program in Maryland, plus some kill pen horses here and

there. So I suggested we list him and see if somebody wanted to

rehab him.@

This was in the weeks before Rosales was fined $2,500 and

suspended 30 days for ignoring his own veterinarian's

recommendation to give Food and Wine up to a year off to heal

a bowed tendon, then drugging the gelding in an attempt to

mask his lameness from a regulatory veterinarian.

Strauss only learned about that darker side of Food and Wine's

recent history last Friday when the Delaware Thoroughbred

Racing Commission (DTRC) ruling came out against Rosales.

According to that Oct. 15 ruling, Rosales had administered

drugs to mask the gelding's pain from a bowed tendon in order

to make it through a workout that Rosales hoped would get

Food and Wine removed from the DTRC's restricted list. But

Food and Wine went lame at the end of that Oct. 3 breeze, and

the Delaware Park stewards launched an investigation into his

care based on a tip from a veterinarian.

Food and Wine's trainer, Linda Manchio, was also fined $2,500

and suspended 30 days. Assistant trainer Belinda Manchio was

fined $1,000 and suspended 15 days (details here).

DTRC executive director Sarah Crane told TDN that as of Oct.

19, no appeals to those rulings had been filed.

AAs far as other horses that were in the care of that trainer, it

is my understanding that there were not very many, and they

have all been transferred out to a different facility,@ Crane said.

ASo there are no horses at Delaware Park under the care of

anybody who was listed in those rulings.@

Strauss said that once she learned that Rosales would be

leaving Delaware Park immediately because of the ruling against

him, she decided that MAHR would just care for the gelding

instead of trying to place him through CANTER.

AI just said, 'We'll take him,'@ Strauss said.

ANow he's in a paddock the size of a double round pen and

he's moving around and comfortable,@ Straus said. AWith bowed

tendons, I like to have them moving a little bit. I don't like to

have them stuck in a stall. I know everybody rehabs bows

differently, but I think it's better for him if he can move around a

little bit. We don't have him on Bute now. He'll get it as needed,

but he hasn't been on it in the few days since he's been with us.

He's very sweet and very nice, and once he rehabs, I think he'll

make somebody a really, really nice horse.@

Based in Warwick, Maryland, MAHR is a non-profit, accredited

equine aftercare and placement organization with a 158-acre

farm along the banks of the Sassafras River.

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 9 OF 12 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • OCTOBER 21, 2021

Strauss said that since TDN last profiled MAHR in 2016, the

operation has substantially expanded.

AI think when we last spoke we only had one facility,@ Strauss

said. ANow we've got the main farm and four satellite farms--

two that we use for rehab and two for retraining and adoption.

We have about 45 horses here at the main farm and close to 90

horses in the program at all times. So we've grown.@

ARNOLD PUTS TENNESSEE BACK ON THE

MAP AT FASIG OCTOBER SALE by Jessica Martini

Despite a rich history of Thoroughbreds breeding in

Tennessee, without a racing program, the state only reported 22

mares bred in 2019. Three of those resulting foals are

catalogued for next week's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October

Yearlings Sale. The trio were bred by Van and Karla Arnold out of

their fledgling Thoroughbred broodmare band at the family's

Cold Springs Farm in Mountain City as foal shares with Taylor

Made stallions Mshawish and Midnight Storm.

Van Arnold's parents purchased Cold Springs Farm, which sits

in the northeast corner of Tennessee, in 1970 and the farm is

primarily used to raise cattle. The Arnolds, who have a

broodmare band of some 45 Quarter Horses, decided to start a

Thoroughbred band just five years ago.

ARight now we have around 10 Thoroughbreds in the

broodmare band,@ Arnold said. AWe are fairly new at it. Our goal

is to produce some that we can race, but right now, we are

producing them to sell.@

The Arnolds' initial investment in Thoroughbred mares started

out as a purely practical endeavor for the farm.

AWe have a cow-calf operation, we have about 400 mama

cows and it's a commercial operation,@ Arnold explained. AWe

use the horses to help us with the cattle and the Thoroughbreds

are as handy as the Quarter Horses. Quarter Horses have a lot of

Thoroughbreds back in there, [AQHA Hall of Famers] Doc Bar

was by Lightning Bar, who was by the Thoroughbred Three Bars.

The reason we wanted to cross them was to make ranch horses

that could cover ground quicker and be a more versatile horse,

rather than having a certain discipline of cutting or whatever

and just have ranch type horses that would be able to do all the

jobs that we need to do with them. And it adds speed and

stamina to them to get the Thoroughbred to them.@

The original intention of crossing the two breeds soon

morphed into a desire to be involved in breeding racehorses.

AIt was probably just growing up and watching the races and

seeing what kind of animals they were--they are just majestic

and beautiful,@ Arnold said of the transition. AIt was just

intriguing and we thought we wanted to try it.@ Cont. p10

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 12 • THETDN.COM THURSDAY • OCTOBER 21, 2021

Arnold continued, AMy wife Karla and I are just passionate

about horses. We just like raising foals and we had the help of

Taylor Made--their motto is 'With us, you're family' and it's true.

They really helped us and encouraged us and helped us get to

the next step.@

The Arnolds teamed up with Taylor Made to breed their three

Fasig-Tipton October offerings. Hip 573 is a daughter of

Mshawish out of Sweet Maxine (Value Plus), while hip 1448 is a

colt by Midnight Storm out of J Be K's Sonnet (J Be K), and hip

1531 is a filly by Mshawish out of Lemon Drop Pop (Lemon Drop

Kid).

AAll of our mares have won money,@ Arnold said. AWe are

pretty proud to have these bloodlines here. We have a daughter

of Value Plus and a Lemon Drop Kid and J Be K daughter and we

also have an Uncle Mo daughter that we are going to try to

breed next spring. It's just a dream, I guess, to have these

pedigrees here.@

Of the Kentucky-based sires his mares have been bred to,

Arnold said, ATaylor Made have helped us cross these mares

with their stallions. It's just amazing that an animal like that

could be born here on the farm. I watched Midnight Storm when

he was running. And Taylor Made got him and stood him and I

was like, 'Wow.'@

The farm is also home to a daughter of the sire of GI Kentucky

Derby winner Medina Spirit.

AWhen we first started, we got a daughter of Protonico. We

still have her on the farm. And when Medina Spirit won the

Derby--it was just amazing--to have a filly related to the

Kentucky Derby winner. It's just so rewarding. And we are so

proud.@

Cold Springs Farms was represented by its first starter as a

breeder when Sweet Tootsie Lu (Tale of Ekati), purchased for

$4,500 at last year's October sale, opened her career at Indiana

Grand in August. Out of Sweet Maxine, the 2-year-old came up

just a head short of breaking her maiden at Mountaineer Oct.

18.

AShe is making me proud,@ Arnold said.

Without a racing program or breeding incentives,

Thoroughbred breeding in Tennessee obviously remains limited.

ABeing from Tennessee, it's a little more difficult because we

don't have incentives,@ Arnold agreed. ABut the Belle Meade

Plantation was one of the greatest Thoroughbred farms in the

world in it's time and that was in Tennessee. So, it gives us hope

and something to strive for, with the help of Taylor Made. They

have helped me tremendously and I am thankful for that.@

John Harding began breeding Thoroughbreds on his Belle

Meade Plantation in Nashville in the early 1800s and by the later

years of that century, the plantation was considered one of the

leading Thoroughbred farms in the country. Eleven Triple Crown

winners trace back to the Belle Meade stallion Bonnie Scotland

and the farm was also home to English Derby winner Iroquois.

Looking ahead, Arnold added, AMaybe we are the pioneers of

something to come to the state. To get racing here, the laws of

gambling and stuff are probably hindering it. But maybe that

could change with the times. It's does make [breeding in

Tennessee] more difficult, but I think if we produce an animal

who crosses the wire first, that's what counts.@

The Fasig-Tipton October sale begins next Monday and

continues through Thursday with sessions commencing daily at

10 a.m.

KEENELAND CATALOGUES 254 HORSES OF

COOLMORE'S ADRIAN WALLACE TALKS 2022

STALLION ROSTER ON WRITERS' ROOM

One day after Coolmore released its star-studded Ashford Stud

stallion roster and fees for the 2022 breeding season,

Coolmore's nomination sales head Adrian Wallace joined the

TDN Writers' Room presented by Keeneland Wednesday

morning. Calling in via Zoom as the Green Group Guest of the

Week, Wallace talked about his upbringing in the Irish racing

and breeding world, the surging Munnings and Caravaggio and

early returns on Triple Crown winner Justify.

Asked about Munnings, whose stud fee has jumped all the way

from $40,000 to $85,000 in recent years, Wallace said, AHe's a

very interesting horse because if you study how his stallion

career has evolved, he's really, really done it the hard way. He

was a high-priced juvenile at $1.7 million, a three-time Grade II

winner, Grade I placed, he obviously had the speed and the

precocity, but he retired without winning the all-important

Grade I. We introduced him at a fee of $12,500 and while he

was always popular, he was covering workmanlike, middle of

the range mares. The thing that he seems to transmit that

helped him through that sort of lull in his early books is [he

produces] very durable horses. It's amazing how many four, five,

six, seven, 8-year-olds he has that are still running. I think when

you've got horses in your stable, as a trainer, as an owner, that

are constantly earning a check at whatever level you're at, it

leaves a good taste in your mouth. It's very important in keeping

him relevant and popular in owners, buyers and breeders'

minds. And now he's at a stage where he's receiving very good support from some of the best breeders in the world. The best is yet to come with him and I think he is a horse we'll eventually stand for $100,000 having done it the hard way.@

New to Ashford this year was Caravaggio, who has gotten off to a rip-roaring start in Europe and currently boasts 21 winners. Wallace discussed the decision to bring the gray son of Scat Daddy, bred in America, back to the States.

AHe was a horse that we wanted to have back here pretty much from the moment we heard he was going to retire,@ he said. ASo we begged to have him and luckily, we got him in his fourth year. I think when you look at him, he's very much an American type of horse. He's very well built. He's very broad across his chest. He's got a great forearm, a great gaskin on him. He looks fast. He looked like he should have been a dirt horse rather than a turf sprinter. Certainly he's off to a flying start in Europe and he bred 170 mares here in his first book of mares. He was very popular. American breeders like him physically, so I think he's a horse with a lot to offer.@

Elsewhere on the show, which is also sponsored by Coolmore, West Point Thoroughbreds, the New York Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund and Legacy Bloodstock, the

writers picked the winner of their AName the Colt@ contest

sponsored by Lane's End and Honor Code, broke down the

implications of the Breeders' Cup decision on Bob Baffert,

reacted to some troubling news out of Delaware Park and

more. Click here to watch the podcast; click here for the audio-

only version or find it on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

HAL'S DREAM (f, 2, Exaggerator--Pink Palace, by Empire

Maker) lit up the tote board at 20-1 in dramatic fashion on

debut here. She raced toward the rear passing the stands for the

first time while saving ground and was 10th through a half mile

in :48.28. Behind a wall of horses on the far turn with plenty to

do, she came rolling into the stretch while weaving her way

through traffic, dove toward an inviting opening along the rail as

the tiring favored pacesetter Already Charming (More Than

Ready) began to drift and eked out a wild photo finish to win by

a nose over Gimme Mo Baby (Jimmy Creed). It was another neck

back to Already Charming in third. Hal's Dream is a half-sister to

get past Mumayaz (Bodemeister) for a 3/4 of a length decision.

at Delaware Sept. 25. Backed as the 6-5 favorite in this stretch

to two turns, the rail-drawn dark bay showed early speed and

backed off to race in second rounding the first turn. She set her

sights on the pacesetting Liking It Twisted (Jess's Dream) on the

far turn, took over at the five-sixteenths and opened daylight

from there to win by a landslide 16 3/4 lengths. Liking It Twisted

PALACE PIER TO STAND ATDALHAM HALL STUD

Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}--Beach Frolic {GB}, by Nayef),

the top-rated miler of 2020 and winner of five Group 1 races for

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, has been retired

from racing and will stand at Darley's Dalham Hall Stud for 2022.

His stud fee will be announced at a later date.

Bred by Highclere Stud and the Duke of Roxburghe's Floors

Farming, Palace Pier was bought as a yearling by his trainer John

Gosden for 600,000gns and won both his starts in maiden and

novice company at two. On just the fourth start of his life, in a

season disrupted by the Covid pandemic, he lined up for his first

Group 1, beating the previous season's champion 2-year-old

Pinatubo (Ire) (Shamardal) in the St James's Palace S. at Royal

Ascot.

His next start saw Palace Pier win the first of two consecutive

runnings of the G1 Prix Jacques Le Marois before running third

to The Revenant (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) on rain-softened ground

back at Ascot for QIPCO Champions Day 2020.

A similar pattern was followed this season by John and Thady

Gosden. The 4-year-old started his campaign with victory in the

G2 bet365 Mile, before beating Lady Bowthorpe (GB) (Nathaniel

{Ire}) in the G1 Lockinge S. He made a triumphant return to the

Royal Meeting in the G1 Queen Anne S. and was then involved

in one of the most thrilling finishes of the season for his second

Jacques Le Marois victory. Cont. p2

ROSACEA'S SISTER TOPS ARQANA OCTOBER

DAY THREE By Emma Berry

DEAUVILLE, NewmarketBBBy the end of the second session of

the Arqana October Sale, turnover had already passed the 2020

total for all five days, and trade continued to bowl along in a

similarly upbeat fashion on Wednesday with another

i4,744,000 added to the overall tally which has just passed the

i25-million mark. To put that in context, the current aggregate

has been achieved from the sale of 424 yearlings so far this

week. Last year, i18,617,000 was paid for 578 horses, and from

a significantly smaller sale in 2019, i17,456,500 was accrued

from 414 horses.

In short, Arqana is well on its way to record October figures.

Wednesday's session posted the highest clearance rate yet this

week of 87%, with the 139 horses sold setting an average price

of i34,130 (+41%) and median of i28,000, up from i20,000.

In that contest, he held off 2000 Guineas winner Poetic Flare

came when being beaten the same distance by the

up-and-coming Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) in the G1

Queen Elizabeth II S. on Saturday.

Palace Pier's dam Beach Frolic is a granddaughter of Miss

d'Ouilly (Fr) (Bikala {Ire}), who was bought by John Warren from

the late owner/breeder Jean-Luc Lagardere in 2000. A half-sister

to the Group 2 winners Bonfire (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) and

Joviality (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), Beach Frolic was sold to

Coolmore last December for 2.2 million gns.

Commenting on Palace Pier's retirement to Darley's

Newmarket division, Sam Bullard, Director of Stallions, said,

"Palace Pier is a wonderful horse to look atBBand he's even

more impressive in full flight. He's dominated the hugely

competitive mile division for two seasons. He's a very rare talent

and we are privileged to be standing him." Arqana October Yearling Sale Part 2 Day 2 Cont. from p1

Arqana October Yearling Sale Part 2 Day 2 Cont.

Fast-forward 24 hours and it was her yearling half-sister's turn

in the spotlightBBin the sales ring for now, but with the aim

being that she can follow her sibling in being an above-average

galloper.

"Let's hope she can run a bit. She's an athletic filly from a good

family and her sister ran very well yesterday," said John

Hammond after buying Haras de la Perelle's daughter of

Tamayuz (GB) for i125,000.

Her winning dam Relizane (GB) is a Zamindar half-sister to

Reggane (GB) (Red Ransom), winner of the GI EP Taylor S.

The former trainer was standing with Mathieu Alex of Sumbe

and confirmed that the filly (lot 377) had been bought to race in

partnership for Gerard Augustin-Normand and Nurlan Bizakov,

the owner of Haras de Montfort, where Augustin-Normand's

former Prix du Jockey Club winner Le Havre (Ire) has stood so

successfully since 2010.

Now 15, Le Havre was responsible for the top-priced colt of

the day, lot 396, who was bred by Rashit Shaykhutdinov and

consigned on his behalf by Haras d'Ombreville. A gaggle of

connections gathered in the passage to the right of the

auctioneer, with the colt being knocked down at i120,000 in

favour of Alain Decrion, who was standing with Nicolas de

Watrigant and trainer Jerome Reynier. The latter confirmed that

the son of the Group 3-placed Sage Melody (Fr) (Sageburg) had

been bought for one of his principal patrons, Jean-Claude

Seroul, the owner of two Group 1 winners with Reynier this year

in Marianafoot (Fr) and Skalleti (Fr).

Reynier said, "He's a very athletic colt and his dam was a very

good racemare. He has a lot going for him and his half-brother

Millau (Fr) has just earned some black type." Cont. p4

Lot 521, a filly by Shalaa | Zuzanna Lupa

Arqana October Yearling Sale Part 2 Day 2 Cont.

The same team later signed for a Zoffany (Ire) grandson of the

GI Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire})

at i70,000. Consigned by Haras de Bourgeauville as lot 406, the

colt is the first foal of the listed-placed Segra (Ire) (Shamardal).

Immediately preceding the Le Havre colt's turn in the ring was

a young son of Almanzor (Fr), whose first-crop runners have

included the Group 3 and listed runners-up Queen Trezy (Fr) and

Saving Grace (Fr) in the last two days. Lot 395, from the Haras

d'Etreham stallion's second crop, was bred by Pierre Cornou,

who will retain a share in the colt, who was signed for by

Ghislain Bozo for i100,000.

From the Lagardere family which includes Arc winner Sagamix

(Fr) (Linamix {Fr}) and the G1 Grand Prix de Paris-winning Galileo

(Ire) full-brothers Japan (GB) and Mogul (GB), the page has been

given another boost this season by the G1 Prix Morny and G1

Middle Park S. winner Perfect Power (Ire) (Ardad {Ire}).

"The breeder wanted to keep a part of the horse and so we'll

put together a partnership," Bozo said. "He will be sent into

training with Edouard Monfort. He may be only of average size

but he's a really good-looking colt and the family has done well

recently."

English agent Daniel Creighton stepped in late in the session to

buy the Marc Bridoux-bred daughter of Shalaa (Ire) from the

Haras de la Hotellerie draft for i110,000. The filly's dam Crystal

War (Ire) (Declaration Of War) cut no ice on the track but as a

half-sister to the St Leger winner Rule Of Law (Kingmambo) and

two other black-type performers, she had plenty of residual

value and her first foal (lot 521) was well received at Arqana.

The family also includes Sacred Life (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), recent

winner of the GIII Knickerbocker S. in the U.S. for Chad Brown

and a granddaughter of Rule Of Law's full-sister Katyusha.

Arqana October Yearling Sale Part 2 Day 2 Cont.

Seabhac, a son of Scat Daddy standing at Larissa Kneip's Haras

de Saint Arnoult, has his first yearlings selling this year and the

leader so far at Arqana is Thierry de la Heronniere's daughter of

Shimmering Sands (Fr) (Medicean {GB}), who sold to Prime

Equestrian for i77,000. The filly's 2-year-old half-sister

Anterselva (Fr) (Fast Company {Ire}) has won this season for

Gianluca Bietolini as well as finishing runner-up in the listed Prix

La Fleche.

Seabhac, who stood his first season at a fee of i5,000, has

had three yearlings sold this week for an average of i39,667.

The demand for the first yearlings of Cloth Of Stars (Ire) also

continued on Wednesday, with Tina Rau and Nicolas Clement

going to i76,000 for lot 454 from Haras d'Haspel. The filly's

dam Vejer (Ire) (Dalakhani {Ire}) is a half-sister to young stallion

and Group 1 winner Zelzal (Ire), who is bred on the same Sea

The Stars (Ire)-Kingmambo cross as Cloth Of Stars. The latter's

14 yearlings sold at Arqana October have returned an average of

i66,500.

There are still two days of the Arqana October Yearling Sale to

go, and those who love to find a bargain can take some

encouragement from the impressive debut of the Jane

Chapple-Hyam-trained Claymore (Fr) (New Bay {GB}) at

NewmarketBBone of three juvenile winners for the Ballylinch

Stud stallion on Wednesday. Bought at Arqana October last year

for i5,000 by breeze-up pinhookers Mary Reynolds and

Ambrose O'Mullane of Ardglas Stables, the colt then sold for

,10,000 at the relocated Goresbridge Breeze-up in June.

Claymore made nearly all in the seven-furlong novice contest

to post a four-length victory over the Godolphin favourite Noble

Order (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and is now being quoted at around 40-

1 for next year's 2000 Guineas. Chapple-Hyam is also

responsible for New Bay's first Group 1 winner, Saffron Beach

(Ire).

Action returns to the ring at Arqana on Thursday at 2 p.m.

local time.

MARMELO TRANSFERS TO NORTON GROVE

STUD Treble Group 2 winner Marmelo (GB) (Duke Of Marmalade

{Ire}) will stand in Britain at Norton Grove Stud in 2022. The

2018 G1 Melbourne Cup runner-up has spent the last two

seasons in France at Haras du Grand Courgeon.

Bred by Deepwood Farm Stud, the 8-year-old won seven of his

22 starts, with six of those wins coming in stakes company. He

showed a particular penchant for France, winning the G2 Prix

Kergorlay twice, the G2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil, and the G3 Prix

de Barbeville.

Reflecting on his four-season career, the horse's trainer Hughie

Morrison said, "Marmelo had a superb temperament, and was

always easy to get fit being so clear-winded. When the

Australian vets scoped him post-Melbourne Cup they couldn't

believe the size of his windpipe. He was obviously one of the

best stayers of his generation, but he also had the speed to hold

the track record at both Chantilly and at York over the Ebor

distance."

Norton Grove Stud's Richard Lingwood added, "When he

walked off the box I thought what a fine big horse he was. He is

16.2, dark bay with no white and looks a proper National Hunt

type. One can see why he was such a good racehorse: he is so

relaxed, and all he wanted to do was stick his head in his

manger."

Marmelo will stand for a fee ,2,000, Oct. 1 terms.

TBA AND RACING FOUNDATION WIN

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AWARD The Thoroughbred Breeders= Association (TBA) and the Racing

Foundation took top honours in the Innovation; Initiatives and

Products Award Category at the British Association for

Sustainable Sport (BASIS) Awards at the Kia Oval Cricket Ground

on Oct. 19. Their project, The Environmental Impact of Stud

Farms Assessment, was funded by the Racing Foundation and

instigated by the TBA=s Environmental Sustainability Working

Group. The goal of the group is to collaborate on grassland

management practices that enhance air and water quality and

soil health, mitigate flood risk and increase biodiversity, while

also reducing the carbon footprints of studs. The study is the

first of its kind in the horseracing industry and aims to identify

the challenges and opportunities specific to equine pasture

management.

James O=Donnell, Chair of the TBA=s Environmental

Sustainability Working Group and Assistant Stud Director at

Shadwell Stud, said, AWinning this award is a major achievement

for the horseracing industry and is the result of a true

collaboration between the TBA and the Racing Foundation.

AEnvironmental sustainability is an important subject that will

be at the forefront of people=s minds going forward and this

project, and subsequent award, is a great place to start.@

One of the least-likely contenders for this following four

winless outings with his best being runner-up finishes in mile

conditions events at Clairefontaine at the start of August and

here Aug. 26, Mister Saint Paul took a leap forward to break his

maiden on this black-type bow. Always travelling strongly

tracking the leader, the bay took over approaching the two-

furlong pole and saw off TDN Rising Star Chancellery with no

hint of fluke as Saving Grace made inroads too late.

Soumillon added, AHe hurt his back jumping a pedestrian path

and was unable to quicken in the straight. It took his trainer a

few weeks to get him back in good shape and today he was

perfect. As you could see I was cruising throughout the race. I

didn=t want to commit too early, as he has a tendency to idle in

front and the first-time blinkers were a good help. He settled the

outcome in a few strides and he has a future.@
