Oscar Performance heads to the winner=s circle | Sarah Andrew

Belmont Derby cont.

Inching away on the far turn after six furlongs in an easy

1:14.37, Oscar Performance was set down by Jose Ortiz at the

top of the lane, scampered clear past the three-sixteenths pole

and kept on finding more.

"When he broke a tad slow and [Jose Ortiz] urged him a little

bit to run up there and I saw the :23 and change, I thought, I

hope it doesn't turn into one of these sort of deals,@ Lynch said.

AWhen the :49 and change came up, I started to grin a little bit

and, when I saw the 1:14 and change come up, I broke into a big

smile. We'll take a deep breath here and talk with the

Amermans and see where we go from here. He's obviously

turned his spring form around and he's on the right track. At this

stage, we'll just enjoy that."

Pedigree Notes:

Oscar Performance=s dam Devine Actress, bred in Kentucky by

Hopewell Farm and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lail, RNA=d for $75,000

the 2-year-old filly Emmy Performance (Point of Entry) and a

heroine got back on track with a wire-to-wire score after setting

easy early fractions in the local GIII Wonder Again S. June 8.

Backed as the second choice in this first try at 1 1/4 miles, the

fourth behind honest fractions of :23.50, :47.54 and 1:11.38.

Moving to challenge three-deep at the five-sixteenths pole as

Sistercharlie tried to wind up from last, New Money Honey

overtook Grizzel (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) at the eighth pole and went

clear before staving off the fast-closing favorite.

"I'm very lucky to ride for Mr. Brown and the opportunity he

gave me to ride the filly," Castellano said. "We've been really

lucky except for the last couple of races with the filly. I think she

is very straight-forward and today she broke well out of the gate

and got a good spot in the race. Chad and I talked about our

strategy before the race and I tried to follow procedure. It

worked out great. It was a beautiful spot in the beginning of the

race. When it was time to go, she responded and finished really

well."

Keen Ice=s last victory was a major upset when running down

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah (Pioneerof the Nile) late

in the 2015 GI Travers S., which was the only loss of that three-

time Eclipse winner=s sophomore campaign. The hulking bay

shocked New York racing fans again Saturday scoring his first

victory since the Travers with another late-running upset, this

time besting heavily favored Shaman Ghost in the Suburban.

Away well from his rail draw, Keen Ice settled at the back of

the quintet as Matt King Coal (Cool Coal Man) took up his

preferred position at the head of affairs and was kept honest by

Shaman Ghost through early fractions of :25.28 and :50.01.

Picking it up a bit as three-quarters went up in 1:13.91, Matt

King Coal was confronted by Shaman Ghost on the far turn and

gave in to that rival in early stretch just as Keen Ice was ranging

up menacingly in the center of the track. Cont. p7

Keen Ice | Sarah K. Andrew

Don’t miss the closings for these upcoming races in the Breeders’ CupChallenge Series – all part of the Win and You’re In(TM) Program. Breeders’Cup nominated race winners get an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup

Shaman Ghost began to kick clear, but Keen Ice was just

finding his best stride and charged clear late for a surprising

victory.

"That was a great effort, he really ran a huge race,@ winning

trainer Todd Pletcher said. AComing into it, we were a bit

concerned with the lack of pace on paper. We thought he might

have to be a little bit more forwardly placed and Jose [Ortiz]

gave him a great ride and was able to position him towards to

the rail. We'll see how he comes out of this, but the [GI] Jockey

Club Gold Cup [Oct. 7] would most likely be his next step."

After failing to hit the board in five attempts at the highest

level following his 2015 Travers victory, Keen Ice was

transferred from Dale Romans to Pletcher after the 2016

G1 Dubai World Cup and was subsequently sidelined with an

injury. Debuting for Pletcher in a Belmont optional claimer in

October, the bay checked in third that day and went on to the

GI Breeders= Cup Classic, where he completed the trifecta

behind superstar champion Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) and

reigning Horse of the Year California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit).

Runner-up to stablemate Stanford (Malibu Moon) in

Gulfstream=s GIII Harlan=s Holiday S. in December, Keen Ice

checked in fourth behind Arrogate and Shaman Ghost in the

$12 million GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational S. Jan. 28 and was

last seen finishing seventh to Arrogate in the Dubai World Cup

Mar. 25.

Practical Joke, a respectable fifth in the GI Kentucky Derby last

time, made it a perfect four-for-four in races around one turn

with this impressive tally.

Last year=s GI Hopeful S. and GI Champagne S. winner was

knocked down late to 3-5 favoritism and settled in fourth, about

four lengths behind >TDN Rising Star= Battalion Runner through

moderate splits of :23.12 and :47.15. Advancing menacingly up

the inside nearing the turn for home, he was stymied in traffic

until mid-stretch, but finished full of run once finding clear

sailing in the middle of the track, taking over at the sixteenth

pole and kicking clear to win as much the best.

"The pace wasn't that strong,@ winning trainer Chad Brown

said. AOn top of that, the horse was giving six to eight pounds to

every horse in the race. He really ran well today. I certainly think

it's the best race he's ever won."

Jockey Joel Rosario added, AI had a good trip. There weren't a

lot of horses in the race, so I stayed inside for a bit. It looked like

[Battalion Runner] was probably going to go, so I just kept an

eye on him. [Practical Joke] ran a big race today. He was the best

horse in the race. He looked good and finished really strongly.

That's what we were hoping for."

Third in the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita Nov. 5,

Practical Joke completed the exacta in both the GII Xpressbet

Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Mar. 4 and GII Toyota Blue

Grass S. at Keeneland Apr. 8.

Pedigree Notes:

Practical Joke was the fourth most-expensive yearling by Into

Mischief from 85 to sell in 2015 when offered at the Keeneland

September Sale. The stakes-placed Halo Humor, a half-sister to

Louisiana Futurity S. winner Cubera (Cape Canaveral), did not

produce foals in 2015 or 2016 and was covered last year by

What Dubai hangover?

Mind Your Biscuits followed up on his spectacular G1 Dubai

Golden Shaheen win Mar. 25 by taking another step toward

champion sprinter honors with this dominant victory.

Capturing Saratoga=s GII Amsterdam S. in his graded debut last

summer, the New York-bred closed out his sophomore season

with a third--later elevated to second--in the GI Twinspires

Breeders= Cup Sprint Nov. 5 and a victory in the GI Malibu S.

Switched from the Robert Falcone, Jr. barn after that, Mind

Your Biscuits came within a neck of running down the

reopposing >TDN Rising Star= Unified (Candy Ride {Arg}) in his

Dubai prep in the GIII Gulfstream Park Sprint S. Feb. 25.

Favored in the wagering here, Mind Your Biscuits set up shop

in fourth behind a :22.67 quarter. Dropping back a bit down the

backside, the chestnut was given a reminder by Joel Rosario and

rolled into contention passing the three-eighths pole. Sweeping

to the fore three-deep at the head of the lane, he was briefly

challenged by Awesome Slew outside the eighth pole, but

quickly turned that foe back with a shake of the reins to win in

style going away.

"We know how good he was training going into this,@ winning

trainer Chad Summers said. AThere were still some doubters

who said it was a subpar Dubai. We didn't think so. We know

what he's capable of and we're ready for the rest of the year. It

makes me think a mile won't be a problem for him, maybe a

little bit further. He kept going and going and kicked away.

Summers added, "We'll go to the [GI] Forego [Aug. 26 at

Saratoga] right now and then look at all options. But the Forego

is our next goal and hopefully [win] an Eclipse Award as well.@

Dangled for the aforementioned tag after a disappointing sixth

in the California-bred Evening Jewel S. last spring, the chestnut

was plucked from Donald Dizney and Mike Machowsky in an

Aug. 27 victory at Del Mar and repeated in a $50,000 claimer

Oct. 22. After running second in a Santa Anita optional claimer

Nov. 6, she reeled off three straight victories, including an initial

stakes tally in the state-bred Dream of Summer S. Mar. 26 in

Arcadia, before running a close second in the GIII Adoration S.

last out there May 7.

Taking good support to be second choice behind defending

champion Finest City (City Zip) in this Saturday feature, Skye

Diamonds came away well and tracked the speed of GI La Brea

S. heroine and >TDN Rising Star= Constellation (Bellamy Road)

from the rail in third past a :22.26 quarter. Winding up three-

deep as the top four bunched up approaching the top of the

lane, the chestnut reeled in the pacesetter at the sixteenth pole

and kicked away late to pick up her first graded success. Finest

City loomed large at the top of the lane, but never quickened,

flattening out to be third.

AShe was a 3-year-old and she was a trier was why we decided

to claim her,@ said winning trainer Bill Spawr. AWe had been

watching her a little bit before we claimed her and it has

definitely worked out. I could have never imagined this when we

first claimed her. We started working her on the training track

[at Santa Anita] and she loved it. She started running the last

quarter in, believe me, :22 and change, not :23 or :24. That=s

when we kind of knew this was a good filly.@

It Tiz Well won by an impressive 10 lengths at Los Alamitos

Deb. 18 to earn >TDN Rising Star= status before finishing runner-

up behind titan and >TDN Rising Star= Unique Bella (Tapit) in the

GII Santa Ynez S. at Santa Anita Jan. 8. She reeled off a pair of

victories beginning with a Feb. 3 $75,000 optional claimer in

Arcadia and followed by the GIII Honeybee S. at Oaklawn Mar.

11. A distant third behind >TDN Rising Star= Paradise Woods

(Union Rags) and subsequent GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Abel

Tasman (Quality Road) in the Apr. 8 GI Santa Anita Oaks, the

dark bay crossed the wire fifth, but was promoted to fourth

after a roughly run trip in the GII Summertime Oaks June 17.

Favored to regain the winning thread this time, It Tiz Well broke

alertly as Proud and Fearless--to her immediate outside--came

in on her a hair and rushed up to take control. In front through

an opening quarter in :24.28, It Tiz Well settled in a nice stalking

position and inched closer to that rival as she carved out a half in

:48.22. Breathing down Proud and Fearless= neck turning for

home, It Tiz Well powered through as GII Black-Eyed Susan S.

winner Actress mounted her challenge on the outside, but

proved too good, repelling both of those fillies to collect the

victory.

AShe broke sharp and to be honest, she put us in a perfect

spot, just off the lead,@ said winning rider Drayden Van Dyke.

AMy horse was nice and relaxed the whole way and she kicked

home very well.@

Iron Fist, a multiple stakes winner in the central time zone this

spring, broke through with his first graded score in the GIII

Prairie Meadows Cornhusker H. Saturday night.

A $1.55-million yearling buy, the gray narrowly missed in the

GIII Ack Ack S. last fall at Churchill before running sixth in the GII

Hagyard Fayette S. Oct. 29 at Keeneland and closing his 4-year-

old account with an allowance/optional claiming win Nov. 27 at

Churchill. Capturing the Maxxam Gold Cup S. in his second start

of this season, he was third in both the GII New Orleans H. and

GIII Steve Sexton Mile before tallying in the sloppy-track

Evangeline Mile S. last out June 3.

Off as the distant third-choice in this meet feature, Iron Fist

came away well and set up shop in second, stalking the pace of

American Dubai from second through splits of :23.49 and :47.38.

Creeping closer approaching the three-furlong marker, he

Pure Sensation, hero of last year=s Parx Dash, but winless in

two starts this season after an aborted trip to Hong Kong,

parlayed a sweet stalk-and-pounce trip into a dominant repeat

in the Bensalem feature, reestablishing himself as a force in the

turf sprint division.

Following up an 18-1 upset of the GIII Jaipur S. with his Parx

heroics last summer, the gray made it three in a row in the

Belmont Turf Sprint S. Oct. 8 at Belmont before finishing third in

the GI Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint Nov. 5. Shipped for a try in the

G1 Longines Hong Kong Sprint, the gelding had to scratch after

coming up lame in both his left rear and left fore in the days

leading up to the race. Finishing an uncharacteristically dull

fourth in the GIII Churchill Downs Turf Sprint S. to start his 6-

year-old campaign May 5, he set the pace before finishing

fourth to stablemate Disco Partner (Disco Rico) in that one=s

record-setting Jaipur score last out June 10.

Taking all the play to be the clear choice here, Pure Sensation

came away well and stalked the speed of Bold Thunder through

a :22.72 quarter. Drawing on even terms with that one nearing

the straightaway, he took control powerfully despite not

cornering all that well, and spurted clear entering the final

furlong before pouring it on from there to defend his title in

style. Mongolian Saturday, winner of the 2015 GI Breeders= Cup

Turf Sprint, ran on late at the fence to nail the pacesetter for

second money in the final jump.

Pedigree Notes:

Pure Sensation=s dam was a seven-time stakes winner in New

Jersey in her owner=s familiar teal and pink polka-dotted silks,

and was named the Garden State=s champion handicap female

in 2007. She is a full-sister to New York-based MSP Captain

Gaughen. Third dam Pure Fire was a SW as well. Pure Disco has

Guilty Twelve, who kicked off her career in Europe under the

care of Roger Varian, hit the board in one of only a trio of starts

at three, and that was on the synthetic at Wolverhampton. Sent

to join trainer Graham Motion=s U.S. string for the 2016 session,

she won at second asking--over the Presque Isle synthetic--

before finishing second going 11 panels at the allowance level

last June. A come-from-behind winner at odds of 12-1 in a 9 1/2-

furlong Spa allowance in July, she wouldn=t see racing action

again until the Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon in September,

when she finished fifth. Given the remainder of the season off,

she returned in 2017 to eke out a narrow nose victory going 10

furlongs against allowance foes at Belmont May 19.

Given a 10-1 chance to collect her first win at the graded level,

Guilty Twelve broke evenly and took up her customary place at

the back of the field. With the leading pair of Bishop=s Pond

(Curlin) tracked by Zipessa were allowed to saunter along

through sedate opening fractions, Guilty Twelve was content to

sit chilly as things got tight for Happyness (GB) (Verglas {Ire}),

who was in the flight directly in front of her. Clear of the

incident and ready to make a move while three paths out as

Zipessa gained control in front, Guilty Twelve swung out four

wide--flanked by the fast-moving Gone Away--turning for home,

made steady progress through the lane and got her head down

to nip favored Zipessa at the wire.

Pedigree Notes:

Guilty Twelve=s pedigree reads like a who=s who of racing. By

European Horse of the Year and Coolmore=s leading stallion

Giant=s Causeway, the 5-year-old mare is out of the Group 3-

placed Arkadina (Ire), a daughter of the prolific Australasian

stallion Danehill and a half sister to Irish Highweight juvenile filly

and dual Group 1 scorer Again (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). Also

responsible for listed French winner Iltemas (Galileo {Ire}),

Arkadina is out of Cumbres (Fr), a half-sister to multiple

European champion and international sire Montjeu (Ire)

(Sadler=s Wells). Arkadina=s latest produce includes a juvenile

colt by Speightstown and a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire).

Sonic Boom went from gate-to-wire to register his first graded

Dona Bruja took her American record to two-for-two with an

ultra-impressive victory in the Modesty, the local prep for the

GI Beverly D. S. Aug. 12. Away well from her rail draw, the chalk

was taken back to sit second last as longshot One Liz (Kitalpha)

ticked off opening splits of :24.59 and :50.37. Still at the back of

the pack after three-quarters in 1:14.08, the bay was tipped out

four-wide at the top of the stretch and unleashed a furious late

turn of foot, mowing down her competition in a matter of

strides to win going away.

Donna Bruja captured eight of her 10 starts in her native

Argentina for previous trainer Agustin Pavlovksy, concluding her

campaign there with a victory in the G1 Copa de Plata Mansilla

International Dec. 8. Transferred to U.S.-based Correas, the 5-

year-old opened her American account with a decisive score in

Churchill=s GIII Mint Julep H. June 10.

Pedigree Notes:

Dona Bruja traces her lineage back to American MGISW Some

Romance. Her dam This is Crazy is responsible for the

sophomore filly Dona Nureyev (Arg) (Storm Embrujado {Arg})

and a juvenile filly named Donna Ballade (Arg) (True Cause).

Keystoneforvictory, who broke his maiden for a bargain

$25,000 tag in early 2016, has come a long way since that

Gulfstream Park effort. After recording his first career stakes win

in the 8 1/2-furlong Forty Niner S. at that venue later in June, he

failed to hit the board in the GIII Kent S. at Delaware in July, but

was an honest third going a mile in the Showing Up S. at

Gulfstream Park West Nov. 5. The neck victor of the Claiming

Crown Emerald S. at Gulfstream Dec. 3, he made it two straight

with a score going nine panels in a starter optional claimer at

the Hallandale oval Jan. 20. Sent to Barbados for the nine-panel

GI Gold Cup Mar. 4, he came home third, but bounced back to

score next time out in a Gulfstream starter handicap at 1 1/2

miles May 29.

Crowded by Bodhisattva (Student Council) at the start,

Keystoneforvictory was shuffled back to sixth in the early going,

as 6-5 choice The Pizza Man settled in a stalking fourth. Eager to

go on as a free-running Belomor (Stormy Atlantic) carved out a

pedestrian half in :49.80, the bay started to show signs of life as

he came off the rail while remaining behind the second flight of

horses. Ready to take closer order as the longshot leader was

starting to show the effects of his early efforts,

Keystoneforvictory was brought out four wide turning for home,

zeroed in on The Pizza Man, who gained command midstretch,

caught him late and drew clear to gain the victory. Applicator

was a head back in third.

AIt set up perfect for us,@ said winning rider Julien Leparoux. AA

couple of horses on the lead, and my horse relaxed. We had a

perfect race.@

Regarding the effort of the beaten favorite, jockey Florent

Geroux added, AHe felt good, turning for home I thought I was

going to get the win, but the one horse just ran him down the

last eighth of a mile. He ran great, I think he=s improved on his

last race and I think he=s moving in the right direction. He=s a

little bit older now and it might take him a bit longer to get to his

top form.@

Pedigree Notes:

Like a fine wine, Keystoneforvictory has gotten better with

age, reflected by his first graded win in Saturday=s Stars and

Stripes S. It can be argued that he had license to become a

productive performer on the turf, given the credentials of his

sire Shakespeare, who was a two-time Grade I winner on the

grass as well as his dam, Free Fee Lady, who annexed the

Wonder Where S. The 4-year-old is the first foal out of the now

10-year-old Free Fee Lady, who most recently produced a colt

by English Channel in 2016 followed by a Super Saver colt this

term.

Ghost Hunter took advantage of a perfect trip and dug in

tenaciously in the waning strides to provide Midlantic-based

Edwin Gonzalez with his first U.S. graded-stakes win in

Saturday=s GIII Arlington H., the local prep for the GI Arlington

Million in five weeks= time.

Neatly away from gate six, Ghost Hunter came back nicely into

the hands of Gonzalez and secured the box seat from third as

79-1 Crewman (Drewman), two-back winner of the GIII Hanshin

S., set the pace in advance of fellow longshot Oak Brook, a full-

brother to the recently deceased Giant Oak. With the lanky

Gonzalez riding tall in the saddle, Ghost Hunter slipstreamed

Crewman into and around the far turn while flanked by New

York invader Manitoulin (Awesome Again) and was poised to

pounce at the top of the stretch. With the rail conveniently

vacated by Crewman, Ghost Hunter seized upon that

opportunity, drove through inside of Oak Brook to lead inside

the furlong marker and stayed on well for the victory. Defending

champion Kasaqui got far back off a modest pace and kicked

hard in the lane, but fell just short.

AI think my decision to go inside was the right one,@ said

Gonzalez. AI was trying to decide--if I went outside it would use

too much--and then the door opened and I took it.@

Winner of last year=s Presque Isle Mile, Ghost Hunter missed

by a half-length when third to future GI Woodford Reserve

Manhattan S. in Laurel=s Henry Clark S. Apr. 22. A troubled

runner-up to Crewman in the Hanshin, the bay was exiting a

half-length defeat of the classy Ring Weekend (Tapit) in a

June 15 Delaware allowance.

Pedigree Notes:

Ghost Hunter was the first for for his dam, a half-sister to

Puerto Rican champion Silver Streaker (Smart Strike), who was

acquired by Adena Springs for $75,000 at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton

November sale. Hartfelt is the dam of a yearling colt by Macho

Hence provided visiting jockey Mike Smith with a sweep of the

evening=s black-type events in Altoona with a last-to-first

triumph in Friday=s GIII Iowa Derby.

The Calumet homebred immediately took himself to the back

of the pack early on as McCormick set an easy, if contested,

pace from the well-backed Churchill allowance winner

Impressive Edge and Balandeen (Bernardini) to his outside.

Petrov (Flatter), the somewhat surprising post-time favorite,

enjoyed the run of the race after leaving from the rail draw and

the top seven were covered by about three lengths, with Hence

a detached last while still ridden cold. McCormick remained the

determined leader as they prepared to leave the far turn, but

Hence shot into the frame under a full head of steam, came six

wide into the stretch, wrested command from McCormick a

sixteenth from home and inched clear.

Hence overcame a wild trip to graduate at fourth asking in the

One race prior to annexing the GIII Iowa Derby for this trainer,

Mike Smith coaxed a worst-to-first finish out of Danzatrice, who

took her career batting average to .500 with the win.

Allowed to fall out of the gates, Danzatrice raced well off the

inside and was content to trail behind a steady gallop up front.

Asked for a rally three furlongs from home, she took the

overland route, but slingshot her way past rivals and though she

was wide off the final corner, her momentum carried her to a

relatively comfortable success. Cleverness and Divine Duchess

rounded out a triple that paid just over $1000 for a 50-cent

investment.

Winner of the 2015 Parx Oaks when trained by Cal Lynch,

Danzatrice thrashed her rivals in the 2016 Tiffany Lass S. at the

Fair Grounds. A popular allowance winner over the Lone Star

turf two back, she most recently dumped Gerard Melancon at

the start of the June 2 Spotted Horse S. at Evangeline.

Ulysees (noseband) just up in the Eclipse | Racing Post photo

IN TDN AMERICA TODAYOSCAR PERFORMANCE PUTS ON A SHOW AT BELMONT Given a head’s up ride by Jose Ortiz, Oscar Performance (Kitten’s

Joy) led every step to annex Saturday’s $1.2-million GI Belmont

Derby. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN America.

EPIC BATTLE IN THE ECLIPSE

With its uphill ascent to the winning line, Sandown is

accustomed to tight finales but one of the best of recent times

was reserved for Saturday=s G1 Coral-Eclipse as Ulysses (Ire)

(Galileo {Ire}) enjoyed the narrowest of verdicts over Barney

Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}). Like his mythical namesake, the

Niarchos Family=s homebred has undergone his own odyssey

from also-ran in last year=s G1 Epsom Derby to his trainer=s

record-equalling sixth Eclipse hero and like his five predecessors

from Freemason Lodge is an older horse subduing the Classic

generation.

Having struck too early when third last time in the G1 Prince of

Wales=s S. at Royal Ascot June 21, Jim Crowley who had been

jocked off Eminent (GB) (Frankel {GB}) earlier this week waited

longer this time with the 8-1 shot travelling visibly clear best in

the straight. After he had finally been allowed loose on the lead

with a furlong remaining, he was joined by Barney Roy and as

that 3-year-old built a head of steam the line came in time with

the headbob favouring him by a nose as they pulled

3 1/2 lengths clear of Desert Encounter (Ire) (Halling).

AIt was great to get the ride on him and I=m very grateful to the

owners and Sir Michael Stoute,@ Crowley said. AWe learnt a little

about each other last time and it was a real plus riding him

there. It was a little bit rough early on but we were away from

that and he settled well, whereas he was a bit fresh with me at

Ascot. I got a fantastic feeling off him at Ascot and possibly got

there a little bit too soon there, so that was on my mind a little

bit today.@ Cont. p4

HOKKAIDO LIGHTS UP FOR SELECT SALEBy Kelsey Riley

HOKKAIDO, Japan--The Japan Racing Horse Association stages

the 20th renewal of its Select Sale at the Northern Horse Park in

Hokkaido, Japan, on July 10 and 11, with 247 yearlings slated to

sell on Monday and 227 foals set for Tuesday=s session.

As guests from Japan and further afield continued to stream

into town on Saturday, Teruya Yoshida=s Shadai Farm and his

brother=s, Katsumi Yoshida=s, Northern Farm opened their doors

to potential buyers to show off the cream of the foal offerings.

The visiting media received a special treat right off the bat at

Shadai with a special viewing of champion mares Princess of

Sylmar (Majestic Warrior) and Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}) and

their Deep Impact (Jpn) foals, neither of which are entered for

the sale. Four-time Grade I winner Princess of Sylmar was a

$1.3-million purchase by Shadai at Fasig-Tipton=s November sale

in 2014, and has a yearling colt and filly foal by Deep Impact.

Unsurprisingly, Princess of Sylmar is back in foal to that

perennial leading sire.

Stacelita, a multiple Group 1 winner in France and the U.S.,

was purchased privately by Teruya Yoshida and shipped to Japan

carrying her second foal, by Frankel, and that gamble could

hardly have turned out better, with the resultant Soul Stirring

(Jpn) becoming the sire=s first Group 1 winner and Japan=s

champion 2-year-old filly of 2016. Yoshida said Soul Stirring is

currently enjoying a summer break and could be aimed at a

European campaign next year at four. Off the back of Soul

Stirring=s success, Shadai currently has three mares in foal to

Frankel boarding at Newsells Park in England, including the

G1 Qatar Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream (Ger)

(Lomitas {GB}). Stacelita has a Deep Impact filly at her side that

will likely be retained to race by Sunday Racing, and she is back

in foal to Deep Impact.

Princess of Sylmar and Stacelita were the first in a long line of

Group 1 winners from America, Europe, Australasia and South

America to be paraded alongside their foals on Saturday, and

also on display at Shadai was GI Spinaway S. winner Contested

(Ghostzapper) and her Deep Impact colt (lot 379). Cont. p2

The mid-February foal, who will be one of the more

anticipated lots of the sale with a reserve of -90-million, is very

much in the speedy mold of his dam and, according to JRHA=s

international representative Naohiro Goda, is unlike the typical

Deep Impact foal, which is generally leaner like its sire.

Yoshida was keen to show off the Heart=s Cry (Jpn) colt out of

Argentinean Classic winner Juhayna (Arg) (Johannesburg).

He said the quality of Heart=s Cry=s books has been increasing

in recent years, and the stallion has displayed an ability to sire

top-class horses across the globe. Indeed, three of his four

Group 1 winners have won outside Japan and the fourth is the

G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby) winner One and Only (Jpn),

third in the Dubai Sheema Classic. The Shadai team was also

greatly anticipating Saturday=s GI Belmont Derby, where Select

Sale graduate and >TDN Rising Star= Yoshida (Jpn) (Heart=s Cry

{Jpn}), a last-out listed winner, finished fifth.

The overwhelming success of Deep Impact means that many of

his sons are now joining him at stud, and one of the more highly

anticipated of those is the Tokyo Yushun winner Kizuna (Jpn),

who has 15 first-crop foals to be offered on Tuesday. Kizuna has

covered books of around 260 mares each of the last two years

at Shadai Stallion Station, and the team at Shadai showed off lot

373, his colt out of the German Group 1 winner Feodora (Ger)

(Lord of England {Ger}).

Another Group 1 winner with his first foals on offer this year is

Gold Ship (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}). The Big Red Farm resident was

well-known for his pre-race antics on the racetrack and he

seems to have passed his personality on to lot 320, who drew

comparisons to his sire by the Shadai staff as he danced around

the viewing area.

The colt=s page received a well-timed update last month, as his

dam, My Jen (Fusaichi Pegasus), is a half-sister to Royal Ascot=s

G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Carravaggio (Scat Daddy).

Opening the show later Saturday afternoon at Katsumi

Yoshida=s Northern Farm was the progeny of a trio of American

Grade I winners. GI Apple Blossom H. winner Ermine (Exchange

Rate), who boasts five winners from six runners in Japan,

showed off a Gold Allure (Jpn) filly (lot 350), who broodmare

manager Tomokazu Okazaki said was a stronger type than her

other foals. GI Frizette S. winner Sky Diva (Sky Mesa) was

paraded with her Deep Impact colt (lot 445), and all the while

dual Grade I winner Zazu (Tapit) hung her head over the back

door of her box, supervising proceedings. That accomplished

mare has produced four foals by Deep Impact, including her filly

foal (lot 418), and she is in foal to Daiwa Major. Cont. p4

Another American juvenile Grade I winner residing at Northern

Farm is the GI Spinaway S. winner Condo Commando (Tiz

Wonderful), whose first foal, a Deep Impact colt, will be offered

for sale as lot 319. He is one of three from the Northern Farm

foal consignment with a reserve of -100-million. The others are

a Deep Impact colt out of Elusive Wave (Jpn) (lot 362), and

therefore a full-brother to last year=s -280-million co-sale

topper; and a full-sister to seven-time Group 1 and Classic

winner Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Japanese Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner Orfevre

(Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) is one of the country=s most anticipated

first-crop sires this year, with one winner already on the board

since 2-year-old racing began in Japan in early June, and one

offering from his third crop that is likely to turn heads at the sale

is lot 356, a colt out of stakes winner Palace Rumor (Royal

Anthem), and therefore a half-brother to GI Belmont S. and GI

Met Mile winner Palace Malice (Curlin). Palace Rumor was a

$1.1-million purchase by Katsumi Yoshida at Fasig November in

2013 and her first foal to race in Japan, the 3-year-old Mineshaft

colt Genesis (Jpn), is a winner, while she has a yearling colt by

Heart=s Cry.

Lord Kanaloa, as his status as Japan=s champion sprinter would

suggest, has made an explosive start to his stud career with his

first runners this year. He has three winners and nine on the

board from 10 runners, and for sale on Tuesday will be a colt

from his third crop out of the dual Australian Classic winner

Shamrocker (NZ) (O=Reilly {NZ}) (lot 382). Shamrocker has a

strong record at the Select Sale, her two foals to be offered

making -92-million and -94-million, and last year=s yearling colt

by Deep Impact fetched -170-million. The reserve on this year=s

colt is -30-million.

Cliches are just truths repeated over and over and anybody

who has followed European racing since the 1980s accepts as

fact that Sir Michael Stoute has an unnatural way with horses he

has had the luxury of time with. The owners and breeders he

has been linked with down the years have been of the same

mentality as the master of Freemason Lodge, with patience the

most vital virtue regarding the thoroughbreds in his care. If

anything, Ulysses has hit the heights sooner than many from the

same long-established powerhouse stable that have eventually

scaled them but he was always more precocious than the likes

of former Eclipse winners Opera House (GB), Pilsudski (Ire) and

Notnowcato (GB). After flashing relative precocity with an eight-

length maiden win at Newbury last May, the bay earned himself

a tilt at the Derby and was the talk of Epsom but wound up only

12th there.

Like another of the stable=s former leading lights Harbinger

(GB) (Dansili {GB}), Ulysses returned to garner the G3 Gordon S.

over 12 furlongs at Glorious Goodwood in July but hopes that he

would build and build from there received a setback when he

found the filly Chain of Daisies (GB) (Rail Link {GB}) a short-head

further ahead in Windsor=s G3 Winter Hill S. at this trip in

August. With a bid for the Champion S. shelved, he was taken to

Santa Anita for the GI Breeders= Cup Turf in November and

managed a fourth placing after a slow start.

Jockey Jim Crowley celebrates the win | Racing Post

Coral-Eclipse S. cont.

His 4-year-old debut over this track and trip in the Apr. 28 G3

Gordon Richards S. was marked by a new maturity and with his

energy properly channelled he was able to dominate

Ballydoyle=s Deauville (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) by far more than the

winning margin of a length suggested. In the Prince of Wales=s

under Crowley for the first time, he looked to have the measure

of his rivals at the furlong pole after delivering his now

customary deadly turn of acceleration but he allowed Highland

Reel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) a second chance and duly paid the price.

Crowley was keen to switch off early as Taj Mahal (Ire) (Galileo

{Ire}) took control of the pace and he was in the right place on

the outside when the scrimmaging that badly affected Cliffs of

Moher (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) took place towards the front. Keeping

dead aim on that 7-4 favourite and Barney Roy throughout, he

was tanking as the latter=s rider James Doyle began to make his

move with Ryan Moore struggling to get Cliffs of Moher in a

challenging position. Hard on the steel as the furlong marker

loomed, Ulysses was shaken up to initially swamp Barney Roy

and it was only inside the last 50 yards that his year-younger

opponent significantly narrowed the gap to force the photo.

When it was unveiled, it showed less than a nostril=s width had

eventually separated the duo.

Stoute, who is now level with the legendary Alec Taylor, Jr., is

pondering a step back up to a mile and a half with Ulysses.

AOpera House was pretty close, but not as close as that,@ he said.

AI felt he was holding on, but I wasn=t at a good angle for the

line. He=s been to Santa Anita and Goodwood and is very

adaptable. He=s only run one bad race, but he had mitigation in

the Derby as he was rolled over twice in that. He=s very

consistent and can go back up to a mile and a half, as he is not as

keen this year. Kevin Bradshaw rides him every day and has

done a wonderful job with this horse, as has my head girl Sarah

Denniff so it has been good teamwork. Let=s go home now and

see how he is in 10 days= time.@

Connections of Barney Roy can take much from the slender

defeat and jockey James Doyle believes he is capable of better.

AIt was a messy race early and we were on top of each other a

bit,@ he said. ARyan [Moore] got hampered down on the inside,

but this track isn=t ideal for young horses. We actually had a

lovely run round. He was a little bit green on the track, but he

turned into the straight nicely and I thought we=d win. Ulysses

jumped on us quick and I thought we were definitely beat and

then he=s rallied back in the last 50 yards. In another stride I

think we=d have got there, but full credit to him, he=s run a

stormer.@ Trainer Richard Hannon added, AHe is good horse and

he is getting better. We are delighted, he has run a super race.

He was just shade unlucky. I=m very proud of him and the team,

it was a good effort. He is a brave horse and he is only a baby.

He will be a very good middle-distance horse for this year and

next year. He is in a lot of good races. He has come back from

Ascot--he had a hard race there but he has still come out and

run his race here.@

Pedigree Notes:

It has been a stellar year for Niarchos breeding, with Ulysses=s

relative Cloth of Stars (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) winning the G1

Prix Ganay, G2 Prix d=Harcourt and G3 Prix Exbury and the

homebred filly Senga (Blame) capturing the G1 Prix de Diane. By

winning this timeless classic of a race, Ulysses was going two

places better than his dam=s G1SW half-sister Shiva (Jpn) (Hector

Protector) who found Giant=s Causeway and Kalanisi (Ire) too

good in the millennium year. The dam Light Shift is of course the

2007 Epsom Oaks heroine, while her half-brothers include the

sire Limnos (Jpn) who was successful in the G2 Prix Foy and G2

Prix Jean de Chaudenay and Hyades (Aldebaran) who was

second in the 2010 GI Charles Whittingham Memorial H. Her

useful half-sister Burning Sunset (GB) (Caerleon) went on to

produce the G2 Prix d=Harcourt scorer and G1 Singapore Airlines

International Cup runner-up Smoking Sun (Smart Strike) and she

was also responsible for the G3 Prix d=Aumale runner-up Ikat

(Ire) (Pivotal {GB}). She in turn gave the Niarchos Family another

cherished gift in the multiple grade I-winning champion Main

Sequence (Aldebaran), while another half-sibling of Light Shift,

the modest performer Strawberry Fledge (Kingmambo), is the

dam of the aforementioned Cloth of Stars. Unfortunately,

Ulysses is the last foal out of the Northern Trick descendant

Light Shift, who had only one other foal make the track in the

former Sir Henry Cecil-trained Bath handicap winner Dr Yes (Fr)

(Dansili {GB}). Ulysses is the 66th individual Group 1/Grade I

winner for Galileo, who is now within seven of his legendary sire

in that category.

Second in the Listed Height of Fashion S. over 10 furlongs at

Goodwood last May, The Black Princess was third in the

G2 Ribblesdale S. over this trip at Royal Ascot in June and re-

emerged from a six-month break to capture the Listed Prix

Solitude over the former trip at Saint-Cloud in November.

Returning to beat the subsequent G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud

third Armande (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in Chantilly=s G3 Prix

Allez France also over 10 furlongs Apr. 30, the bay was second

over slightly further in the G2 Middleton S. at York May 18 and

stepped up to provide John Gosden with a record-equalling

seventh renewal of this affair. Anchored on the rail early in fifth

racing keenly, she was denied a run to her outer as Abingdon

(Street Cry {Ire}) was sent on passing the quarter pole. Switched

back and launched between rivals as that favourite lugged right,

she reeled her in with 100 yards remaining and stayed on

gamely for more pattern-race honours.

With Gosden absent, his travelling head lad Tony Proctor was

on hand to say, AShe=s done nothing wrong since we=ve had her.

She went to France and won there. Then she ran at York and

made the running, which didn=t suit her. Mentally, she=s been a

bit slow at coming to herself. Physically, she=s always been

there. She=s not had many races and looked as good today as we

thought she would.@

Ballymacoll Stud=s general manager Peter Reynolds said of

Abingdon, who will be a key member of the dispersal later this

year, AShe ran a super race, she just got caught but she is group

two-placed now and is a valuable lady. She will be sold in

December, sadly, but I hope she will give us more fun before

then.@

Pedigree Notes:

The Black Princess is the second foal out of Larceny, who is a

half-sister to three group winners headed by the G1 Prix du

Jockey Club hero and sire Lawman (Fr), the G1 Prix de Diane

heroine Latice (Ire) (Inchnor {GB}) who in turn is the dam of the

dual listed scorer Fencing (Street Cry {Ire}), and the G3 Prix du

Palais-Royal-winning sire Satri (Ire). The third dam Light the

Lights, who was successful in the G2 Prix de Pomone and ran

third in the G1 Prix Vermeille, is a half-sister to three black-type

winners headed by the G3 Prix Fille de l=Air winner Liastra (GB)

Battaash looked potentially smart when scoring by four

lengths on debut at Bath last May, but after ruining his chance

by rearing in the stalls and trailing in 12th in the Listed Windor

Castle S. at Royal Ascot was sent back to Shadwell for a gelding

operation. Third on his comeback in a six-furlong conditions

event at Doncaster in early September, the bay was also in that

spot in a five-furlong nursery at Haydock later that month and in

the G3 Cornwallis S. at Newmarket the following month. Back to

impose himself on his rivals which included the subsequent

G3 Chipchase S. winner Koropick (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) in theListed

Scurry S. over this course and distance June 17, he was more

alertly away here and when opened up approaching the furlong

pole was never in danger.

Jockey Dane O=Neill was impressed. AHe=s got a lot of ability

and we=ve always liked him,@ he said. AHe=s had his issues, but

Charlie and his team have done well to sort him out. He=s a

typical sprinter--he either does things slowly and quietly or at

full tilt. He=s pretty impressive when he settles and accepts it.

The worry for me was whether somebody got to my girths and

lit him up a bit, but he was able to do it just the way he wants

because he has such early speed.@ Charlie Hills is looking at the

G2 King George S. at Glorious Goodwood Aug. 4. AHe is

improving now, as he has had a few problems but is going the

right way,@ he said.

AThe obvious race is the King George. He has got an entry in

the [G1] Nunthorpe [S. at York Aug. 25] and we would be taking

on a good filly [Lady Aurelia] there that we have got to be wary

of. We were always trying to get him settled this year as last

year he was like a bull in a china shop as he tried to do

everything at once. Hopefully he will improve with more racing.

I don=t think we will be looking to stepping him up to six

furlongs.@

Battaash is the first foal out of a half-sister to four black-type

performers headed by Shadwell=s former G2 Champagne S.

winner Etlaala (GB) (Selkirk) and Bird Key (GB) (Cadeaux

Genereux {GB}), who in turn produced this year=s G2 Duke of

York S. scorer and G1 Diamond Jubilee S. runner-up Tasleet (GB)

(Showcasing {GB}). The third dam Noirmant is a half to the

G1 Prix Royal-Oak winner Braashee (Sadler=s Wells), her full-

brother, the four-time group 3 winner Adam Smith (GB) and the

G3 Nell Gwyn S. winner Ghariba (Ire) (Final Straw {GB}). She in

turn is the dam of the listed-winning Promptly (Ire) (Lead On

Time), who herself produced the G3 Autumn S. scorer and

G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Fantastic View (Distant View).

Anna Law also has an as yet unraced 2-year-old colt by Intikhab

named Littlelordconford (Ire).

SNOW IN JULY Having shaped up to the best of Britain and Ireland=s miling 3-

year-olds, Godolphin=s Thunder Snow (Ire) (Helmet {Aus}) heads

back to France on Sunday where he will bid to supplement his

group 1 success in the G1 Criterium International in Chantilly=s

G1 Prix Jean Prat. Since winning that seven-furlong feature at

Saint-Cloud in October, the bay has captured the Feb. 11 G3 UAE

2000 Guineas and Mar. 25 G2 UAE Derby and placed second and

third in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas at The Curragh May 27 and G1

St James=s Palace S. at Royal Ascot June 20, with the inexplicable

blip at Churchill Downs in between.

Andre Fabre currently shares the record of five wins in this

race which has enjoyed a few different guises with Francois

Mathet and Francois Boutin and saddles Haras de Saint Pair=s

unbeaten Trais Fluors (GB) (Dansili {GB}). He has emerged from

the Listed Prix de Pontarme at Saint-Cloud May 23 and G3 Prix

Paul de Moussac here June 17 with a steadily enhancing

reputation and his ceiling has yet to be reached. Goldikova=s

half-sister Gold Luck (Fr) (Redoute=s Choice {Aus}) won the nine-

furlong G3 Prix Vanteaux here Apr. 9 before finishing fifth in the

G1 Prix Saint-Alary trying a mile and a quarter on testing ground

at Deauville May 14. Back here for the G2 Prix de Sandringham

June 4, the Wertheimer homebred split La Sardane (Fr)

(Kingsalsa) and the subsequent G1 Prix de Diane heroine Senga

(Blame) when second there and may need positive tactics to

beat the colts here.

GODOLPHIN HORSES TO OXX Trainer John Oxx, best known for his longtime and successful

association with His Highness the Aga Khan and for his work

with six-time Group 1 winner Sea The Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross

{Ire}) was recently sent five 2-year-olds owned by Godolphin,

according to a

story first

released by The

Irish Field.

ASheikh

Mohammed has

had a long-

standing

relationship with

John Oxx and we

are delighted he

has agreed to

train for us again. We look forward to working with him,@ Joe

Osborne, recently named chief executive officer of Godolphin,

told the publication.

Oxx, who turns 67 on July 14, conditioned the likes of

champions George Augustus and Foresee (GB) to important

victories in the 1990s and Dearly (GB) and New South Wales

(GB) in the early 2000s, reported The Irish Field.

Oxx=s association with the Aga Khan, for whom he trained

Sinndar (Ire) and Azamour (Ire), ended in 2013, while the Tsui

family, who campaigned Sea The Stars, decided last year that

they would no longer have their horses trained in Ireland.

Out early this year, Tisbutadream won three handicaps on the

eighth in the Listed Spring Cup also at Lingfield Mar. 4. Back at a

mile to garner an Ascot handicap May 13, the chestnut ran third

Sandringham H. at Royal Ascot June 21. Unbowed by a busy

campaign, she was up to lead from the outset and drew on her

tenacity to see off allcomers from the two-furlong pole.

Without a win since the G2 Prix Kergorlay at Deauville last

August, Nearly Caught faced tough assignments thereafter with

a third placing in the G1 Prix du Cadran at Chantilly and fifth in

Ascot=s G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup in October the

best of them. Becoming the first to advertise the form of the

G1 Gold Cup at the Royal meeting in which he was a well-beaten

ninth June 22, the bay took advantage of a class-drop to restore

some confidence. Help up well adrift of the pace in fourth

throughout the early stages, he hung down towards the rail

when the pressure was applied inside the final quarter mile but

was able to gain the lead with 150 yards remaining and tough it

out from the Chester Cup hero Montaly.

CAMELBACK (c, 2, Exchange Rate--Pick and Choose, by Street

in his second start last time May 26, led his two rivals at a

modest pace from the outset here. Nudged along approaching

the two pole, the 15-8 second favourite came under increased

pressure thereafter and was driven out in the closing stages to

hold Strike For Freedom (Ire) (Dream Ahead) by a length. AIf you

came to my yard he=d be the one I=d give you to ride, but the

minute I put the saddle on him he threw a buck, a kick and a

squeal, and became totally unmanageable,@ explained trainer

behaving like that is good. He obviously has an engine, but his

CUMMINGS STRAIGHT OFF THE MARK Saturday marked the opening of a new era for Godolphin=s

Australian operation, as James Cummings, the grandson of the

legendary Bart Cummings and son of trainer Anthony

Cummings, took over training duties from interim trainer Darren

Beadman. And things could not have gotten off to a better

beginning for the new partnership as Manicure (Aus) (Exceed

and Excel {Aus}) belied odds of 17-1 to take the TAB Rewards H.

(1200m), the opening event Saturday at Warwick Farm.

Exiting a maiden victory at Canterbury June 21, Manicure

attended the early pace Saturday before settled in mid-division

through the middle stages. She loomed boldly three abreast off

the home corner and looked a bit one-paced entering the final

furlong, but the bay was kept to her task by Corey Brown and

stuck her head across the wire first (video).

AIt=s an absolute honour to train for His Highness Sheikh

Mohammed and for his first runner with me in his colours to be

a winner is pretty special,@ Cummings told Racing NSW. AThe

first runner I had that he was in the ownership with also won,

Hallowed Crown (Aus), so it=s a really nice way to start and the

period ahead is going to be one I can really enjoy.@

ROYAL SYMPHONY REMAINS ON SONGby Alan Carasso

Asked to concede anywhere between 3 1/2 to 5 kilos to 11 of

his fellow juveniles, Royal Symphony (Aus) (Domesday {Aus})

continued his rapid ascent through the grades with a

comprehensive 4 1/4-length victory in Saturday=s Listed Taj Rossi

Series Final (1600m) at Flemington.

Punted into $1.50 (1-2) favouritism, Royal Symphony was one

of the last away from the stalls, but was allowed to find his feet

and had improved into about centerfield down the side of the

course. Patiently handled by Dwayne Dunn, whose wife Amanda

is part of the ownership group, the bay pinched ground at the

fence, edged away from the inside at the top of the straight and

poured in on in the final 200m, then galloped out well past his

rivals (video).

AI don=t know how good those horses are behind him--not

being disrespectful, but the second horse is a maiden--but when

you carry that sort of weight (59kg) and can do that, it shows

you=re a good horse,@ winning trainer Tony McEvoy told

TAPIT GRANDSON OF IPI TOMBE BREAKS

MAIDEN by Alan Carasso

Wheel of Time (SAf) (Tapit), whose dam Pin Turn (GB) (Pivotal

{GB}) is a daughter of South African, Zimbabwean and UAE

champion Ipi Tombe (Zim) (Manshood {GB}), showed sharp

acceleration over the final 2 1/2 furlongs and held sway late for

a cosy half-length graduation in Saturday=s opening race at

Turffontein.

A drifter in the markets from an opening price of 3-2 out to

twice that at the off, the Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa

colourbearer was in the latter half of the field at the 600m

before being switched to the inner by Anthony Delpech soon

after. He hit the front going well with a quarter-mile to travel

and never looked like losing from there as favored Battle Front

(SAf) (Judpot) closed well to make the final margin close.

Wheel of Time, the seventh South African winner for his wildly

successful US-based stallion, was bred by Mrs Gaynor Rupert=s

Drakenstein Stud, who acquired Pin Turn for US$65,000 in foal

to Canadian sire Old Forester at the 2012 Keeneland November

sale. The mare remained stateside and was covered by Tapit on

Southern Hemisphere time, producing Wheel of Time on Sept. 3,

2014. Drakenstein consigned the chestnut to last year=s

Bloodstock South Africa National Yearling Sale, where he

fetched a final bid of R1-million from Jehan Malherbe=s Form

Bloodstock.

Ipi Tombe was trained by Mike de Kock to victories in the

prestigious G1 Durban July H. in 2002 and the G1 Dubai Duty

Free S. in 2003 when raced by Barry Irwin=s Team Valor, WinStar

Farm and Sunmark Partners. Sent to the US, she added a victory

in the GIII Locust Grove H. and retired with 12 wins from 14

starts.
