All judgments of regulating, enrollments, continued enrollment, time, location and lengthof classes, as well as the class size, are the prerogatives of the School Committee via theSuperintendent and such judgments are final when rendered.

CANCELLATIONS AND MAKE-UP CLASSES

If the public schools are closed due to inclement weather during the daytime, there will beno Community Education classes. If weather conditions become severe late in the day,cancellation will be announced over WBZ, Channel 4, WHDH, and Channel 7. Classes willbe rescheduled at a later date. If there is a delay in the opening of school, CommunityEducation classes will be held.

Chef and proprietor, Paul Turano will prepare several of his restaurant'sspecialities. Tryst focuses on creative American cuisine using seasonal fruitsand vegetables. Participants will sample Turano's dishes, many with a Mediter-ranean flair. Tryst, at 689 Mass Ave., Arlington, serves lunch and dinner,Monday - Saturday and brunch on Sunday. Turano is also the owner of Olio inCanton. His restaurant does private functions and catering. (A $5 food fee willbe collected at the class.)

Do you know what happens to your entitlement to Social Security benefits ifyou are a federal, state, city or municipal employee or if you are entitled to ateacher's pension? This class will cover the impact of these benefits on yourSocial Security check. The instructor will also discuss how workmen's compen-sation or unemployment works with Social Security benefits, She will provide atimeline for filing for benefits under Social Security and the necessary documen-tation.

Ms. Sarno has worked for more than 30 years for Social Security. During this periodshe has been a claims representative interviewing and adjudicating applications forbenefits, a training instructor to newly hired employees, a member of the public affairsgroup for the region as well as currently providing presentations to federal, state andlocal employees, union and private employees on the law and regulations for SocialSecurity. She holds both a BS and JD degree.

The instructor, a floral consultant, will discuss many aspects of choosingappropriate flowers for your wedding. This workshop will help you choose thestyle of bouquets for you and your wedding party. You will learn how to selectflowers to create a mood or tie in with a particular theme or color scheme. Youalso will learn how to make a variety of floral bouquets in case you choose tomake your own. Fresh flowers will be used to create traditional and hand-tiedbouquets, a corsage, and even a boutonniere. Topics to be covered includebudgetary considerations, seasonal availability, use of exotic and locally grownflowers, and preserving your bouquet. Everyone will leave with a smallbouquet. A $20 materials fee should be paid to the instructor at the class.

This course gives students important information, strategies, andwriting practice for the sixty-minute writing section on the new SAT Iexam. Students will practice how to organize and write a strong essay in25 minutes by understanding how to quickly grasp the question, organizethoughts, develop a quick outline, and write the essay. Students also willreview grammar and usage for the multiple choice sections. Students willbe encouraged to complete at least four practice tests and learn effectivetest-taking approaches to obtain their best score. Students should bring acopy of Kaplan's New SAT Writing Workbook (available in Charlesbankbook store) to the first classJeanne Widmer, Ed.D., Director of the Center for Living and Learning, works withmiddle and high school students on a range of issues: selecting colleges andwriting the college essay, study, organization, writing and test taking skills andSAT I preparation.

10 wks. (3/22 - 5/31)This ten-week intensive course will be a study and review of American

history from the age of exploration to the present. The thematic approachwill include the social, cultural, economic, political and diplomatic historyof the United States. Weekly readings, in addition to a liberal dose ofpractice exams will be an integral component of the review. Severalmembers of the Social Studies Department will conduct this review in theirareas of expertise. Students will be required to buy a text at the firstsession. Max.: 24.

3 wks. (4/26 - 5/17)Many people have acquired the computer program Adobe Photoshop Elements

but do not know when or how to use it. Did you know that it is used for editingdigital images? This workshop introduces you to the program's techniques aswell as its terminology. You will practice with photo correction, color adjust-ments, the use of layers, and saving formats so that you can begin to use thepowerful features on your own.

The Math SAT II- Level IC subject test is designed to assess yourunderstanding of the mathematics commonly taught in American highschools in three years of college prep mathematics (2 yr. of algebra and 1yr. of geometry). The test requires knowledge of algebra, geometry,trigonometry, functions, and some miscellaneous topics. A scientific orgraphing calculator is required. The test is developed with theexpectation that most students are using graphing calculators. Studentsshould purchase Barron's Math SAT II Level IC. Max.: 25.

8 wks. (3/23, 30; 4/6, 13, 27; 5/4 - 18)The Physics SAT II subject exam covers the following areas:

Mechanics, Optics & Waves, Electricity & Magnetism, Heat, Kinetic Theory &Thermodynamics, Modern Physics. Although the majority of this subjectmatter is part of the Physics curriculum at BHS, some of it is not covered.This course is designed to fill in the missing pieces with thoroughinstruction of the new material. Problem solving techniques and testtaking strategies will be discussed, and a study schedule will be outlined.

DROP-IN LAB 3 wks. (3/23, 30; 4/6)In this seminar, students will learn the fundamentals of (nonlinear) digital

video editing, including the use of MiniDV digital video cameras and thelanguage of today's digital editing. During class time, students will capturevideo images, download them to a computer and create a finished videoproduct using Windows Movie Maker editing software (or equivalent). This isan excellent introduction into the world of digital editing for the novice andvideographer alike. Join the class to see how easy it is to edit video. Max.: 6students.

3 wks. (3/16 - 30)Would you like to use your computer to keep track of personal budgets,

company records or finances of any sort? This course will introduce students toMicrosoft Excel 2000, a modern spreadsheet application, that can do all thesethings and more. Topics covered range from creating worksheets to usingformulas to producing graphs. Any introductory or beginner book on MicrosoftExcel 2000 is a useful companion for the course.

mail distributions with the mail merge tools of Microsoft Word. You will use themail merge wizard which guides you in developing one announcement, letter,mailing label which then can be sent to many friends and organization membersby just pressing the print button. You will learn how to customize features ofmail merge and to send your form document to a selected group (not an entirelist). Participants should have a basic understanding of the use of a computerand word processing.

will experiment with templates, graphics and animations to develop apresentation. They also will learn about the handout and notes features. Abasic understanding of using word processing is necessary.

PROTECTING YOUR COMPUTER B.H.S. IN A MALICIOUS WORLDLee McCanne & Phil Sullivan $25 Tues. 7 - 8:30 pmNEW Lib. Mezz. 1 wk. (3/15)

Securing your computer from intrusion and malicious viruses is veryimportant. In this workshop we will explain what you can do, withoutspending a lot of money, to protect your data. Over purchasing applicationscan cause problems by over taxing your computer's resources. Web based freeresources will be discussed. This is an essential workshop for all who owncomputers and feel uninformed about securing their computers.

want to improve their skills. Each week, the instructor will focus on agrammar point. Then, through activities and games, students will have theopportunity to practice the lesson and reinforce their skills of speaking andreading. Students will be given handout activities to review at home. Studentsalso will learn about Belmont's local culture and resources.

8 wks. (3/7 - 5/2)You always wanted to learn French but procrastinated! Now is your

chance to start from the very beginning. You’ll be learning the correctpronunciation taught by a Parisian. This course will help you in your trip toFrance. If you have some basic French, this course can be a review. Materialfee will be collected by the instructor.

7 wks. (3/10 - 4/28)Planning a trip to Italy? Learning Italian will allow you to take advantage

of the less expensive facilities outside the big tourist centers and will make fora more meaningful trip. This course will concentrate on pronunciation,vocabulary, and creative learning of the language essential for communication.Handouts will be provided and a text will be recommended. Ms. Carrara hastaught Italian for many years and has worked extensively with the CentroAttivita Scolastiche Italiane.

7 wks (3/8 -4/26)This 7-week course is for English speakers who have no previous

knowledge of the Chinese language. The goal of this course is for theparticipants to learn the meaning, pronunciation, and usage of a small set of theChinese common vocabulary such as short sentences of greetings, orderingfood, asking for directions. A typical class will have three segments:pronunciation and usage, practice, and conversation. After this course, andwith the aid of the provided materials, participants can expect to understandthe meaning, pronunciation, and usage of the vocabulary worked on in classand may be able to make a simple conversation. A $5 materials fee will be paidto the instructor at the first class.

SPANISH, BEGINNING B.H.S.Tania Muino Loureiro Rm. 103 $80 Mon. 7 - 9 pm

7 wks (3/7 - 4/25)This course will cover pronunciation and basic grammar, with stress on

vocabulary and expressions needed in a foreign country. This course is open toall future travelers.
