Circle of FriendsCircle of Friends members had
a recent outing to the Elizabeth F.Gamble Gardens in Palo Alto, CA.The residents had the opportunityto explore the lush greenery andvibrant flowers in bloom. Theplace has knowledgeable docentswho give guided tours of thehistorical home, andhorticulturists to enlighten youwith their expertise on thebeautiful plants that grow.Luncheons and weddings havetaken place here. They even haveStory Time for children who visitthe historical site, where storiesare read, songs are sung, andfinger plays are conducted. Classesare also provided where mastergardeners would give tips on howto keep your very own gardenhealthy and ways to make itflourish. Everyone really enjoyedhis or her time at the garden whilegetting fresh air, warm sunlight, and physical fitness. It was a veryrelaxing and peaceful time for theresidents, as well. This was a greatway to have a perfect day justbeing outside to experience springin all its splendor.

Neighborhood NewsRecently, the residents created
some ceramic art pieces withSamantha, who is a long-timetalented and creative artinstructor. She works very wellwith our residents and they fullyenjoy the project ideas thatSamantha brings to thecommunity. They [the residents]are filled with joyful anticipationfor what new art projects she hasin store for them. This timearound, the residents had madepinch pots with clay. In the nextfew days, it is important to keepthe clay moist to prevent crackingfrom excessive dryness. The pinchpots will be taken to a kiln forfiring. Afterwards, they will beglazed and finished by theresidents with their choosing ofcolor and design. This activityhelps the residents with tasksequencing, dexterity, concentration and attention.Other benefits include enhancingthe imagination, sensorydevelopment, and problemsolving. In addition, the residentscan share their work with othersand garner a sense ofaccomplishment. It has also beenreported that working with clayprojects can raise self-esteem,relieve stress, even reducedepression and anxiety. We lookforward to seeing the finalproducts and having themshowcased at our annual art show.

Adults 55 and older are moreprone to becoming victims offalls, and the resulting injuries candiminish the ability to lead active, independent lives. The number offall deaths among those 65 andolder is four times the number offall deaths among all otherage groups.
We can all encourage residentsto participate in daily exerciseclasses. Staying active has shownto reduce fall risks in older adults.Belmont Village and Rehab Careoffer various exercise and wellnessprograms to suite everyone’sfitness level.
Check apartments daily for anytripping hazards. Phone lines andoxygen tubing should never beobstructing a walkway. Please alertthe wellness center if you aretaking any new medications, asmany side effects could triggera fall.
Residents should always usetheir walking aid, even inside their
apartments. Check to make sureyour walker is by your bedside atnight. Walkers and canes shouldbe check for any loose ormalfunctioning parts.
Families, residents, andemployees should immediatelyreport any safety concerns in thecommunity.
Spills should be reportedimmediately and attended toswiftly to prevent any slips on wetsurfaces. Always use wet floorsigns when necessary.
Most importantly try to exercisegood judgment and never attemptan obstacle or task that you feelmight not be safe handled alone.Don’t hesitate to ask forassistance; prevention is key forstaying healthy.
