Graduating students,

Commemoration Day is a special day for all of us at Imperial. Your accomplishments inspire the whole university community and your excitement energises us. I hope you enjoy this day and remember it forever.

You have much to celebrate. In your studies you have tackled some of the most significant and demanding topics in your disciplines. You have taken intellectual risks. Outside of the classroom you have demonstrated your leadership in clubs, societies, sport and projects in the UK and abroad.

Our College Strategy is built upon our strong foundations: our great people, our partners and the enablers that provide support for our efforts. Your future will also be built upon strong foundations.

You can be proud of your contribution to Imperial’s community of staff, students and alumni. Together with those receiving awards and honorary degrees, who we also celebrate today, you exemplify the talented people who drive Imperial’s success. You have made lifelong friends at Imperial and they will enrich your life.

The benefit of Imperial’s work to society is extended by our global network of partners. I hope you take from this place a spirit of collaboration and the ability to build and contribute to teams.

I hope you also take a moment today to recognise the enabling support of my colleagues and your family and friends. Your success is principally because of your dedication and hard work, but others have helped you in myriad ways. You will find that the support of others is essential to your future happiness and success.

I wish you all the very best for the future. Whatever path you choose, I hope you maintain your curiosity, continue to seek out new challenges and apply your talents for the benefit of society.

Imperial College London was founded in 1907 with the merger of three great Victorian institutions: the Royal College of Science, the City and Guilds College and the Royal School of Mines.

By the end of the century, St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, the National Heart and Lung Institute, the Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and Wye College had all merged with Imperial, confirming the College’s status as an education and research powerhouse. Today, the College operates across nine campuses, including White City Campus: a new 25-acre research and translation centre in White City, west London. At White City Campus, world class researchers, businesses and higher education partners are co-locating to create value from ideas on a global scale.

More than a century after its founding, Imperial’s academic distinction is at an all-time high. A world top ten university, 73 current Fellows of the Royal Society, 86 Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering and 85 Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences are members of the College, while 14 Nobel laureates and two Fields Medallists worked here. From Fleming’s work on Penicillin and Gabor’s discovery of holography, to Kibble’s contribution to the Higgs boson and Pendry’s work on metamaterials, Imperial has remained at the cutting-edge of science and innovation throughout its history.

THE COLLEGE COAT OF ARMS The College coat of arms, which incorporates the royal coat of arms, was granted a royal warrant in June 1908. The motto — Scientia imperii decus et tutamen — roughly translates as ‘Scientific knowledge for the crowning glory and protection of the realm’.

THE IMPERIAL MACE The Imperial Mace was presented to the College by the Goldsmiths’ Company in 2009 in recognition of its status as a university in its own right and of the livery company’s longstanding relationship with Imperial and its predecessor institutions. The Mace’s intricate design incorporates the Imperial coat of arms and motto, and was designed to be a focal point of the College’s Royal Albert Hall graduation ceremonies.

ACADEMIC DRESS The unifying theme of Imperial academic dress is the colour purple, inspired by WH Perkin’s invention of the first synthetic purple dye, mauveine, in 1856. Perkin, a Royal College of Chemistry graduate, died in 1907, the year of Imperial’s foundation.
