Hundreds of pandemics that hit humanity in history have completely disappeared afterwards, causing great wounds in societies. The Covid-19 outbreak we are experiencing now will of course be history one day. However, it will take place in the history by engraving many warnings as a lesson in people's minds under the title of 'not to be forgotten', as it is our main responsibility to give up many mistakes that have been known to be true, to change some of our habits and to protect our own health first and then the public health.

The COVID-19 pandemic will leave many negative issues in memory, as well as add many success stories to the list of “unforgettable things”. In such a way that as we all know, humanity was caught unprepared for the pandemic. The disease that emerged in China affected the world in a very short time without knowing any distance. People got sick, lost their lives, were confined to homes. Factories and businesses were closed. Almost all fairs, travels, flights were canceled. Production, export, trade -in short- the life came to a standstill for a while.

I say to a halt in particular, because this is a period of successful people who I have mentioned, shouldered responsibility and made an intense effort to turn the wheels and prevent people from being unemployed. It is necessary to congratulate many successful people who are aware of the fact that stopping commercial life means stopping life and who managed the process well by taking lessons from what happened. These people who were not pessimistic took it as a duty to protect themselves as well as those around them and their employees. On the one hand, they strived to protect the health of the people in their companies, on the other hand,

they continued to contribute to the country and the national economy by ensuring the continuity of the company's commercial activities.

What will happen next?

As I said before, we will quit or change many habits in our daily life. The next priority will be to realize the importance of a healthy life and take each step accordingly. We will carefully follow the rules that require a physical and face-to-face approach. We will also attend fairs and hold B2B talks. But we will follow these old rules very carefully.

In addition, we will perhaps expand the usage area of digitalization that has become more embedded in our lives with the pandemic. We have to adapt to remote production, remote delivery, remote marketing and sales. In addition to distant physical proximity with our customers, we will also get used to being together virtually. Because this is the rule of the new game and we have to play the game by the rules.

In this sense, I can easily say that our industry is one step ahead of its competitors in the world. Because I saw that almost all of my colleagues easily adapted to these new rules. Hundreds of companies quickly obtained a healthy production certificate from TSE (Turkish Standards Institute). They set up online sales systems. They implemented healthy and effective hygiene rules at all stages from production to sales and delivery. They started to grow with their style that gives confidence to both staff and customers.

Now is the time for our industry to recover quite safely and using the power of digital assets more professionally. It is time to work non-stop in order to eliminate the negative effects of the past 9 months and to be stronger than before

We took lessons from the pandemic; we will continue with stronger, healthier and more value-added production!

and to be victorious from the global competition that is getting more difficult.

International fairs, which will be activated all over the world from January, are waiting for us for new customers, new markets and new targets.

Now is the time to represent our brand and our country with our mask, products, disinfectants, catalogs and professional teams.

Now is the time to leap for our companies, our industry and our country.

I wish everyone a healthy, happy and successful future.

Mainly In which countries and regions do you export your products?

As of now, we export 4 continents and more than 40 countries but mainly European countries such as France, Germany, UK, African countries at North, East and West, Middle Eastern countries, some Asian countries and most of the Gulf countries. In recent activities we also started to aim Latin American countries and started our path with Mexico and further moves in USA and UK will be coming through.

You have a wide range of products, which types of products are preferred in which countries?

In our sector, diversity is the key. By having the right R&D activities and visionary moves, we always aim to offer the right product to the right expectations. On this journey, culture, traditions, demographic, etc. would be defining product demands. Since, we offer our products to different countries and continents with also different features, we sometimes could

end up having a subtle, loft products of ours such as the effect of natural stone, industrial effect products in some European and Asian countries but also having posh and flashy product of our effect range in Middle Eastern and African countries. Therefore, our wide range has the right skills offers to different culture hence liking.

As a Turkish company, are there any difficulties you encounter in different geographies?

PROFILE

16 September/2020

I believe in international business management there are always challenges depending on various reasons. Also in our sector, geographical differences, cultural diversity, country characteristics, climate, form of trades, competition, benchmarks, ease of strategy implementations, consumer behaviors and experience would be challenging for us and it does.

However, we approach every country with its specific research with the support of right marketing and field

operation. Sometimes, on top of this we could face challenges like countries and people perception on brand and products but we always act accordingly with the support of our vision and mission, so we tackle them and always move forward.

What kind of road map would you recommend to companies that want to export?

As nation we are society that loves risk so always take action on the way and

also face most of the reality on the way as well. Also we are surrounded at the geography where neighbor countries depends on import hence we also most of the times depends on export to these countries. But, I am sure nowadays all of us might agree that this risk is to vital not to take anymore. Therefore, I suggest to our valuable exporter companies to have the right strategy path before taking the action for each move and also aim some other geographies where value added actions are more respected if available.

17

Have your plans changed during the pandemic process?

Pandemic teach whole world and also us the transformation of the way we make business. As San Deco, in this period we also revise our way of business and rapidly implement it to our strategies which actually we spread this in longer terms. Hence, by also adapting to the digital way of business quicker than ever, we revise some of our strategies with the expectations of the new World. We can call this process positive for us and now we are stronger than before. But generally we could Septemberbe postpone some of our plans but we did not give up, only revised it.

Could you briefly tell us about your goals in the coming period?

In the beginning of 2020, we departed to a new journey with the 5 year strategy plan targeted the year of 2025. This is a path requires lots of transformation and development process. As export sales and operations plans, we focus on our Customer relationship management with the goals of involving every inch of our company through the process of development and transformation with also adapting to the right technology and digitalism. By this way, we will develop and transform our existing distributors, sales agents, customers all around the World and also gain new markets, distributors, sales agents or customers in different continents and locations. their company’s success story in general and their special focus on the carpet business in particular:

Your company is a professional firm which has realized a lot of firsts in the carpet business in Turkey. Would you mention the building blocks and milestones of Özkul Halı for those who will get to know of it for the first time?

Our founder İbrahim Özkul founded Özkul

Carpet in 1912. The company initially focused on hand made wool carpet. Özkul Carpet ordered Turkey’s first carpet weaving machine from Germany in 1952 and carried on machine weaved carpet production for domestic use. We produced mosque carpet for Sultanahmet Mosque (Blue Mosque) in 1960, an operation which was a turning point in our history.

What are the reasons behind the professionalization in mosque carpet business of your company?

Specialised mosque carpet production business is newer compared to house carpet production. Before Özkul Carpet, mosques used house style carpets, that looked patchy and less pleasing to

Özkul Carpet raises the aesthetics level of carpets with its exclusive production. For over a century the company produces 100% wool carpet for mosques and other commercial areas in different sizes and patterns. As a company using 100% domestic wool and noncarcinogen reactive dye, how do you evaluate the carpet manufacturing in Turkey? Do you believe that the “Made in Turkey” labelled carpets welcome the interest from foreign markets they deserve?

We use high quality chemicals, such as reactive dyes, and 100% wool sourced from Turkey in our products. Made in Turkey label is regarded as an indicator of quality in carpet markets worldwide. We estimate demand for this label would increase in the future.

Heimtextil 2021 will be different – more concentrated and focused on actual business.

And the necessary hygiene precautions will also of course change the look of our trade fair’, says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt. ‘We consider ourselves all the more lucky that numerous exhibitors and visitors, both national and international, are placing their trust in us by announcing their participation and are counting on Heimtextil to be the first industry highlight after the restart’.

Leading representatives from the home and contract textiles industry consider the upcoming Heimtextil (12-15 January 2021) as a decisive way to boost their business activities after the restart.

In Germany, bdia (Association of German Interior Architects), the BTE (Association of German Textile and Bedding Retailers), the DecoTeam, Heimtex (Association of the Home Textiles Industry), the MZE (the furniture association for leading, medium-sized specialist stores), the VDB (Association of Bed Dealers) and World-Architects have all stated how incredibly important Heimtextil is. On the international side, the following major industry players have shared their thoughts about Heimtextil: CIE (Consejo Intertextil Español), El Corte Inglès, Home Textiles from Spain, IGI (The Global Wallcoverings Association), Taiwan Textile Federation, Tetsiad (Turkish Home Textile Industrialists' and Businessmen’s Association) and UKFT (UK Fashion and Textile Association) – see below for detailed statements by the industry representatives.

Online now: overview of all participating exhibitors

Hall occupancy by exhibitors is now taking concrete shape: by mid-July, 947 exhibitors from 49 countries had made a

firm booking for a stand at Heimtextil. They therefore currently occupy a surface area of nine football fields. More stand bookings will follow over the next few weeks and months.

Positive signals from the world of politics

Heimtextil is also receiving positive signals from the world of politics, which give rise to hopes for a relaxation and speedy return to successful trade fair operations: at trade fairs, it is now important to ensure that the minimum social distance of 1.5 metres is observed. As a guideline, three square metres of space should be available for each person. This will ensure that Heimtextil can permit all visitors entry to the halls at all times.

Since the start of July, travel to the EU from selected third countries has been possible again. ‘This is an important signal for international exhibitors and trade visitors who come to Germany for our trade fairs and another important building block in the successful restart of the trade fair’, emphasises Jörn Holtmeier, CEO of AUMA (Association of the German Trade Fair Industry). The German government has so far permitted unrestricted travel to Germany for visitors from eleven countries, in addition to the 26 EU member states.

Erol Türkün: “Heimtextil is the most important trade fair worldwide in our industry. We hope that everything will return to normal as far as January. It would be the perfect time to restart. We believe that Messe Frankfurt will take all necessary health measures and that exhibitors and visitors can enter without any problems. As far as I am informed, all major Turkish companies will participate.”

Free tickets: Heimtextil supports exhibitors and visitors

Given the challenging situation facing many companies, Heimtextil is supporting its exhibitors and visitors with a new measure: exhibitors will be given free ticket codes to pass on to their customers. With this gesture, Heimtextil expresses its solidarity with its exhibitors and will allow numerous dealers and furnishing experts to gain free entry to the trade fair. ‘We want to create additional incentives for national and international buyers to visit the trade fair in Frankfurt at the start of the year so that they can meet old and new business partners alike’, says Schmidt.

And this is what national and international industry representatives think about Heimtextil and Messe Frankfurt’s protection and hygiene concept:

Bdia, Association of German Interior Architects, Germany – Monika Slomski, Chair, Hesse regional association:

“Even though we discovered the potential of digital meetings during lockdown, nothing beats visiting a trade fair. In order to lend our projects the personal touch and for us to create innovative and original details, the inspiration we get from trade fairs is indispensable. Where else can you inform yourself so quickly and comprehensively about products and innovations, view colours and a design in person, touch materials and fabrics or feel and experience the effect of a particular texture on a surface? We at bdia Hesse want to reinvigorate direct dialogue and are already looking forward to taking our interior architecture colleagues on guided tours of Messe Frankfurt's Heimtextil again.”

BTE, Association of German Textile and Bedding Retailers/VDB, Association of Bed Retailers, Germany – Axel Septemberin, BTE spokesperson and VDB CEO:

“After months of limited contact, many

home and household textile dealers are once again looking forward to personal meetings with their suppliers. BTE is sure that Heimtextil will develop a convincing social distancing and hygiene concept that will enable a low-risk visit to the trade fair. Since the trade in home and household textiles had to cope with comparatively small losses due to corona, many business owners are hopeful for 2021 and eagerly looking forward to seeing new products at the trade fair.”

CIE, Consejo Intertextil Español, Spain – Càndid Penalba Peiró, President:

“Against a background of rapidly growing global demand for home and household textiles, which is down to the desire for renewal and improved hygiene post Covid-19, Heimtextil 2021 offers us a great opportunity to meet our customers again in a safe and secure environment.”

DecoTeam, Germany – Ottmar Ihling, DecoTeam spokesperson:

“As the biggest and most important leading trade fair for home and household textiles, Heimtextil is a fixed and important component in the textile

calendar for all members of the industry. For us members of the DecoTeam group, this trade fair is the meeting place for the industry. Business deals and personal meetings with our customers, communication on all levels, the presentation of new products, creative input – all this now has increased relevance and is of greater importance, especially in these unusual times. We are therefore particularly looking forward to this Heimtextil and are positive that everyone else feels the same.”

Dina Vanelli, Turkey – Erol Turkun, Founder:

“Heimtextil is the most important trade fair worldwide in our industry. We hope that everything will return to normal as far as January. It would be the perfect time to restart. We believe that Messe Frankfurt will take all necessary health measures and that exhibitors and visitors can enter without any problems. As far as I am informed, all major Turkish companies will participate.”

El Corte Inglés, Spain – Cristóbal Montero Álvarez, Head of purchasing department for home and household textiles

“For us, Heimtextil is the most important international meeting place for ordering home and household textiles. Given the increasing demand for furnishing and decoration, we're looking forward to meeting our suppliers again in 2021 and eagerly await the new developments, innovations and trends that the textile industry will come up with.”

Heimtex, Association of Home Textiles Manufacturers, Germany – Martin Auerbach, CEO:

“The German home textiles industry – as is the case in many other sectors too – is going through a very challenging and stressful time. Not all our members were able to benefit from the catch-up effects in May, which makes it all the more important that the industry has a strong presence at Heimtextil at the start of the year in order to kick-start a strong new

year with the international community. We therefore strongly recommend that our association members take part in the international industry meeting. Even though we will be experiencing a leading trade fair in a different way, in Frankfurt, important national and international buyers come together, and they also want to make contacts in person and

experience new products. In spite of all the challenges, we see the trade fair as a decisive, indispensable support tool for restarting the industry that will also provide orientation.”

Hometextiles from Spain, Spain – Manuel Revert, President:

“All Spanish exhibitors are confident and are looking forward to the upcoming Heimtextil in January 2021. After this tough pandemic and its devastating consequences for our industry, we believe that Heimtextil 2021 will give our companies a fresh start in terms of economic activity and a return to normality. The personal encounters with our customers, sales teams and suppliers will be positive. We are all very much looking forward to meeting everyone in the industry, and Heimtextil is the ideal platform for this.”

IGI, The Global Wallcoverings Association, Belgien – Pascal Siellet, Präsident:

“As the world's leading trade fair for wall covering, Heimtextil is the best possible platform for the members of IGI to come into contact with international customers and potential new buyers. Despite the challenges the wall decoration segment is currently facing - even more so than other product groups - we expect good business impulses at Heimtextil for a

restart after the crisis. Even if it will be a special trade fair edition this time with a concentrated wallpaper presentation, we very much hope that all participants can contribute and benefit from the upswing at the subsequent Heimtextil.“

Manifattura Tessile di Nole, Italy – Luca Ferrari, President:

“Heimtextil 2020 was a success for di Nole and we liked seeing all textile lovers in one place. It starts again in 2021 and, after such challenging period, we’re looking forward to starting a new fresh business year in Frankfurt with our worldwide customers and we are happy to be part of Heimtextil again next year with determination and joy.

As always, Heimtextil is formidably organised and I can only thank the whole team that is working to take care of ours and our customers’ safety in every possible detail. See you next year, we can’t wait to be part of Heimtextil 2021.”

MZE (Möbel-Zentral-Einkauf), Germany – Peter J. Schroeder, Head of 2HK, interior design

“We at MZE, with our ‘Interior Design' division comprising over 200 interior decorators in Germany and Austria, support all Heimtextil activities and concepts as part of the DecoTeam, particularly during the current situation. We see ourselves as a mouthpiece for our partner companies, many of whom understand the importance and necessity of Heimtextil as our leading trade fair for the sector. The importance of personal contacts with the industry, as well as inspiration and suggestions regarding creative events, is very important, especially in the current situation, despite all the challenges it presents. In our trade sector, the signs continue to point to positive business development. All the more reason why we need a return to personal contact.”

Taiwan Textile Federation, Taiwan – Justin Huang, President:

“Messe Frankfurt re-starts Heimtextil in 2021. That is wonderful news for the global textile industry as well as for the retailing business. We perused the factsheet and found the organizer did a good job to keep all exhibitors and visitors in a safe protection. The detailed reminding about distancing rules, active visitor management, hygiene measures, stand catering etc. provides us with considerate services. It is confident that the trade event will contribute Messe Frankfurt as a new mile stone to host trade fairs in the future. On behalf of Taiwan Textile Federation, I will organize a group of exhibitors to participate in the fair, as long as the quarantine regulations would allow us to trip to Frankfurt and back to Taipei.“

Tetsiad, Turkish Home Textile Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association, Türkei – Huseyin Bayram, President:

“In Heimtextil 2020, Turkey was represented with 300 exhibitors which resulted in a great success for our companies. Heimtextil is an essential trade show for Turkish home textile industry where we have the chance to show everyone of the true potential and vision of Turkish manufacturers. As TETSIAD, we are confident of reaching an export revenue of 5-10 billion USD each year with our participation in Heimtextil which strengthens our hopes and expectations for the future.”

UKFT, UK Fashion and Textile Association, Großbritannien – Ann Thompson, Textile Consultant:

“UK textile businesses are cautiously optimistic about future business in the mid to long term, and are confident that the international market for their high quality products will gradually resume following lockdown. Heimtextil is an essential business platform for our members: All British exhibitors in the UK pavilion in Hall 4.1 have already re-booked their spaces for Heimtextil 2021, and are looking forward to welcoming their customers from around

the world to their stands. UKFT have been impressed to see how pro-active the Heimtextil team have been in terms of implementing and communicating the new health and safety measures for the forthcoming show. I am sure this will go a long way towards reassuring exhibitors and visitors regarding attendance at this world-renowned event.“

World Architects, Germany – Lisa Pavitschitz, Director Market Development:

“Daily webinars, online workshops and Zoom/Skype meetings are the new normal. But personal contact is also important and requires space. As a kick-off event for architects, interior designers and designers, Heimtextil is one of the most important events of the year. The discussions and networking in Frankfurt are a central anchor point for the industry. With a focus on architects, the Interior.Architecture.Hospitality area in hall 4.2 offers a colourful array of innovative exhibitors and a fringe programme for visitors. The guided tours and lectures have been one of the most important sources of information for many years now. As a partner of Heimtextil, World-Architects is looking forward to being part of it once again next year”

Respectful to nature; there is no limit in imagination: Gliese designGliese design gives an answer for design demand of interior architecture projects besides its furniture and furniture accessory design works. Mustafa Başaran, owner and designer of Gliesedesign, explains how important the nature is to make exclusive living spaces. According to Mustafa Başaran, nature is part of the nature and people becomes unhappy as much as they go away from it.

DESIGN

42 September/2020

Thousands of descriptions were made for design works and every designer has his own soul

and talent to describe the design factor. Mustafa Başaran also has a lot in store to guide and inspire young designers. We asked for that and he detailed.

You are one of the young and talented entrepreneurs. Could you mention about founding of Gliesedesign?

Design is a multidisciplinary job for me. Being timeless and creative is important to me and my brand. The outcomes of many designs at Gliese Design at this point have proved the authenticity while uniqueness in the sector are very limited.

What is the biggest force that pulled you to industrial design?

The fact that one of my older sisters is a sculptor and the other is a graphic designer in my family has made me interested in fields such as art and design since my childhood. So, the design has always been in my life.

You have a different sense of design. How was this shaped?

While actualizing my researches and designs authenticity is a prerequisite for me. I am fond of using colors. Another essential thing that matters in my designs is aesthetics

43

You are manufacturing tables and chairs. Do you plan to increase your product variety?

Yes I plan to do it. The design process is very crucial for me. In my opinion, making original and lovable products rather than making many products are more important

You state that you are inspired by nature. Are there intense demands on your products at this point?

It can also be said that it affects the demand. People care the design of the product in the moment of buying decision. Authenticity is in first place in my designs. This increases the demand for my brand.

Has there been a change in your goals after pandemic? Can you predict growth in the short term for Gliesedesign?

Pandemic impacted in fact but I can say that I have managed this interim period effectively. I continue my efforts to offer new products/designs in coming days.

Gliese design is a brand progressing in compatible with certain targets. Growth is among these targets but it is important to proceed with secure steps. In the meantime, we are facing the obstacles that affect the entire world and sectors.

What would you say about export?

We are not exporting right now, but there is an ongoing demand for my products from many countries. As one of my targets. I hope that I will also.

the fact remains that without the right export strategy we cannot become a prominent leader in the industry.

We are aware that every market has its own unique preferences and regulations, and having knowledge of each target market’s unique characteristics is key for a company desiring to enter that market.

We do trade and market research on foreign partners, distributors, buyers and customers depending on the market’s dynamics.

For the next period, we target European and Asian market with our Airport Solutions.

Until now, ¼ of our production is dedicated to the export market and trying to increase it to the 1/3 within next 2 years by looking for better partnerships, ones where the sales are profitable and promising.

How do you evaluate the current position of Emse in Turkey and worldwide?

To be able to evaluate our position we rely on statistics and indexes, engineering and innovation and sector improvement becomes our attitude since we are upgrading our solutions referring to worldwide standards.

We are competing with big brands in and out of Turkey. In all tender based projects, we are shortlisted due to our competitive offers and flexibility in production. At the moment we can say that we have a ‘’TRADEMARK’’.

What are Emse’s aims in the short, medium and long terms?

We can give one of our current real planning samples under the title of: New Normal / Post Covid-19 in industry environment:

Short-term goals look at the characteristics of our company in the present and develop strategies for improving them. For example,

the skills of the employees and their attitudes, the condition of production equipment or product upgrade are also short-term concerns.

Our Medium-term planning applies more permanent solutions to short-term problems such as moderate and adapt our available projects to ‘’ New Standards’’ in Pandemic period. We study on new solutions and develop some new products.

In the long term, Emse wants to solve problems permanently and to reach our overall targets. Long-term planning reacts to the competitive situation of Emse, develops strategies for adapting and influencing our position to achieve our long-term goals. Mostly we examine major capital expenditures such as purchasing equipment and facilities, and implements policies and procedures that shape the our company's profile to match top management's ideas

Does Emse have any developments or latest investments?

Along with developing new products and adding features to old ones, investing in R&D connects various parts of Emse's strategy and business plan, such as marketing and cost reduction.

In order to improve our customer portfolio, we are extremely focused on developing common use airport applications by adding new features and using innovative technology solutions and respond to the maximum market needs.

Is there anything that would you like to highlight?

Before all strategies and target indexes, we aim to satisfy our customers and keep them updated about the market trends.

64 September/2020

Due to still-challenging global situation with COVID-19, and a high degree of uncertainty regarding public events in

the fall 2020, Messe Frankfurt Rus made the decision to postpone Heimtextil Russia 2020, which was scheduled for September 15-17. 22nd International Trade Fair for Interior Furnishings and Home Textiles will be held on September 14-16, 2021, the venue will remain the same - "Expocentre", Moscow, Russia.

Messe Frankfurt Rus made this difficult decision after a deep analysis of the current situation, including negotiations with partners, fairground management, Russian and foreign participants.

Today the health of each person came to the fore, and a ban on mass events has an absolute sense, we fully understand and support it. Despite some concessions regarding the self-isolation regime in some cities and countries, there is still a high probability of a second wave of a pandemic in the fall season. In addition, the continuing prohibition on the entry of foreign citizens to the territory of the Russian Federation (about 60% of the exhibitors are foreigners), as well as other limitations due to the epidemiological situation in Russia and in the world, effect on quality of event preparation.

"We know how much effort and resources exhibitors put into fair preparation. A high degree of uncertainty and the impossibility of planning forced us to take this difficult decision now, so the participants were able to adjust their plans for the fall season in advance", says Katerina Tydykova, Show Director of Heimtextil Russia.

Yıldız Entegre introduces “Shoot, Pick, Apply!” application for parquet selection

The application senses the elevation differences in the photos created by furniture

and other objects and integrates the models perfectly without any errors. This way, any kind of uncertainly in the selection period is eliminated.

The market leader in forest products industry in Turkey, Yıldız Entegre introduced augmented reality to parquet selection. First in Turkey, “Shoot, Pick, Apply!” Application will allow customers to benefit from technology when selecting parquet models. They will be able to see perfectly well how the parquet models of their choice look in their own living spaces.

How does it work?

The application is very easy to use and it can be used for both living spaces and offices. First, the customer will shoot a picture of the space that they are planning to remodel. Then, the picutres will be uploaded either to the “Shoot, Pick, Apply!” Application or the bar with the same name on Yıldız

Entegre website. Once the uploading

is complete, the customers will be able

to see all of the parquet models with

different colors from VarioClic and

TerraClick product series. They will be

able to choose any model and color.

Yıldız Entegre has been drawing considerable attention with their recent investments in digitalization. Their latest announcement was “Shoot, Pick, Apply!” which was a parquet selection application, first of its kind in Turkey. With this application, customers now will be able to use their phones or computers to try out their favorite parquet models on the floor of their own living spaces within seconds.

Big investment to digital transformation

Yıldız Entegre’s Marketing and Corporate Communications Manager Ercan Şahin highlighted that the company has been investing a lot to digital transformation processes and added, “Today, the key to making a difference is to integrate digital transformation to the process and embrace technology. As Yıldız Entegre, we prioritize innovation. We aim to develop our production processes and strengthen the customer experience.”

A first in Turkey

Şahin states that the company digitalized catalogues very recently. They also initiated various practices including 3D Swatch and Virtual Showroom. “Named ‘Shoot, Pick, Apply!’ our application is the first of its kind in the industry in Turkey. Part of Yıldız Entegre’s digital transformation process, this application aims to better the customer experience. We are focused on using technology to enhance the aesthetics of living and working spaces. Launched for the first time in Turkey by a forest products company, this application will compose a huge difference in customer experience,”

Online design

Mr. Şahin pointed out that the creation of the application was inspired by the feedback they received from their retailers about problems customers faced in the selection process. According to Şahin, trying to understand the customer was a big help. “Today, when you decide to remodel your floors, there is a long and confusing road ahead. You visit a store and try to choose a model and color which you think will look good on your floor. But neither color charts nor parquet samples are enough for the customer to imagine the whole decor. This detail causes problems.

By moving this process to a digital platform, we’re making it possible for customers to actually see how models look like on the floors of their own homes or offices. Once the selection is complete, the products are provided by the closest Yıldız Entegre store and the remodeling process begins,” Şahin added.

Natural products attract great deal of attention

Ercan Şahin also stated that natural

products are on high demand in both

interior and exterior decorations.

“During the quarantine for the

Coronavirus pandemic, people were

drawn to remodel their living spaces.

Wooden products makes us feel closer

to nature and soon they will be on

high demand. We anticipate that this

trend will see a specific rise in the

coming years both nationally and

internationally.

Carrying its holistic designs that inspire living spaces into its stand design by Paola Cesaretti,

Kaleseramik won the "Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2020" in Cersaie Fair, which is accepted as the most important meeting of the industry in the world.

Describing the design journey of the stand, Kaleseramik Marketing Director Zeliha Özay Yurdatap said: “When we got together with Paola and her team for the stand design, we said that we want to take people on a timeless journey when they touch the ceramic. And we wanted to see "uniqueness", "mastery" and "excellent experience",

our main characteristics, in the design. Later in design, these three words evolved into minimal geometric shapes, the connotation of perfection and durability. While the two intertwined circles represent Kale's Turkish and Italian cultural relations, the infinity

“Despite the general perception of ceramic tiles, which looks as if it is only a solid building material, we wanted to provide a fresh and unforgettable experience for Cersaie visitors with this stand design that pushed all the limits of today's digital world.” said Zeliha Özay Yurdatap, Kaleseramik Marketing Director.

sign derived from this combination inspired the design of the stand. Through the interior design made with five areas dedicated to different brands of Kaleseramik, we presented our innovative products, potentials and features of our products to the visitors with the help of spaces that interact with each other.”

“We benefited from the power of Kalesinterflex”

“Round, brave, yet selective architectural frame brought Kale's different spirits together with the aim of an exclusive identity, and in doing so, our own product Kalesinterflex —the largest polished porcelain ceramic in Turkey— was used in the entire exterior cladding of exhibition stand. This product was also used for a holistic interior design in all areas consisting of kitchen, living room and bathroom by using alternative areas of use for Kalesinterflex. Using traditional techniques, we created large-size panels to obtain forms like thin porcelain sheets from our high-tech product Kalesinterflex. We designed an area to frame the panels. stand. This digital space, which is made of Kalebodur products and combines uniqueness, mastery, experience and well-being stories with the customer in an interactive way with four projections, has beed accompanied with a lightly animated narration that consists of short ironic and poetic stories based on the environmental, public space and home life values of Kale. When the visitors touched the panels, they came to life and visitors have experienced their first digital interaction with ceramic tiles. Here, we preferred the use of different tile collections of Kalebodur in wall compositions by making use of the Mix & Match philosophy that creates a warm effect especially in interior decoration. With the use of theatrical light in the design, the whole stand area was characterized by a metaphysical atmosphere, thanks to the combined primary colors and geometric shapes. While the vertical and horizontal surfaces were designed as contemporary interiors, decorative paintings complemented walls, floors and showcases, as well aroused a feeling of home and workplace.”

SZN Wood Concept, professional processing of natural woodProducing 100% natural wood furniture, the firm guarantees reliable quality even with large quantities. The company’s products are preferred at a lot of major projects such as Marmara Forum, Dolphin Hotel, Ivme Hotel, Lika Park homes, etc., lots of cafe, restaurant and hotel projects in Switzerland, Germany, Malta and France.

In this interview, Agah Emre Sözen, General Manager of SZN Wood Concept talks about their

operations, describes the role of usage of natural wood plays in their business.

Could you brief us about your company and its works?

First of all, our company was established in 1953 to carry out lumbering activities in Trabzon. Since that day, it has continued its lumbering activities without interruption. SZN WOOD is a brand we launched in 2016 in order to catch the "natural wood furniture" trend in the national and international market. The most important feature that distinguishes SZN WOOD from its competitors; we have the entire production from timber to furniture. This is a feature that gives us a serious advantage in all markets. It is also a feature that we can maintain our quality standards. We make sure that everything that looks like wood in the products we produce is 100% "natural wood" and we do not

compromise on this. The furniture we produce is made of natural wood, including the drawer backs.

What would you say about your product groups and one month production capacity?

Although we produce outdoor furniture and wooden structures in our other brand, our target product group

as SZN WOOD is indoor natural wood furniture. Beside the table and chair we produce and sell bookcases, center tables, zigzag sets, TV units, consoles, bedroom furniture, wooden wall coverings, wine rack, wing chair, armchair and so on. We manufacture and sell almost all indoor furniture. We have a production capacity of approximately 8,000 m³ of timber raw material.

PROFILE

76 September/2020

Could you mention about your prominent references in the hotels, shopping malls and restaurants?

Our furniture can be found in almost every province in Turkey and in many countries in Europe as 70% of our sales are made by large wholesalers and brands. I can give examples from the projects we have carried out are; Marmara Forum, Dolphin Hotel, Ivme Hotel, Lika Park homes, etc. Lots of cafe, restaurant and hotel projects in Switzerland, Germany, Malta and France.

What can you say about your understanding of design as a company that applies wood in different forms to our living spaces? How naturalness is processed in SZN WOOD products?

The design process in natural wood furniture is a little unusual. Because you have a living material and you are trying to shape it. First of all, you need to know the raw material very well. I'm not just talking about wood raw material here. Raw material is wood but they are in a different physical features and types such as walnut, chestnut, spruce, etc. When we design, we first decide which tree type we will use and design the product accordingly. You cannot produce a product you designed with walnut wood with spruce tree. If you do, you'll get a lot of return. In addition to our architect team, our forest industry engineers also work in the design team. Sometimes customers confuse the furniture we produce with massive covered furniture. We produce completely "Natural wood furniture". In our designs, we care about aesthetics and ergonomics as well as longevity. Because these furniture we produce should be able to be used easily after 50 years as the raw material is very suitable for this. It will be a little bit cracked at the most, and it adds an elegant value.

Could you mention about your export activities?

We are actively export and our priority is to find dealers with a certain volume. We currently have dealers in 5 countries in Europe and we act together with them. When we follow

the developments, we believe that this number will increase day by day.

What are the short, medium and long term goals of SZN WOOD?

In the first quarter of 2023, we laid the foundations for a new area of 10,000 m2, Turkey's first integrated as far as I know, we will complete the “Natural wood furniture" factory. In the long run, we will represent our country in the international market with our natural wood furniture brand that has a unique style.

Övünç Emre, being the founder of the idea of developing a pioneer collective office

and shared space in İzmir which will present spatial and fictional novelties, submitted the project to XL Architecture + Engineering whose basic design motivation rests on “to imagine/to inspire”, in 2018.

Pre-design issues, such as strategic planning, business plan, marketing, feasibility studies, budgeting and the selection of the location, are collaborated. Consequently, a collective office and shared space project which presents spatial and fictional novelties

is designed in a refurbished warehouse nearby Çınarlı District.

WITHCO Coworking Space, which goes into operation at the end of 2019, includes 75 separate office units, 45 table units, a 98 person lecture hall, meeting rooms, a startup accelerator campus zone, YouTube studio, café, a wellness restaurant and regenerative-shared spaces.

The ratio between the regenerative-shared spaces with the individually owned office rooms and the overall design enable and enhance the user to participate in the shared activities.

WITHCO Coworking Space by XL Architecture + EngineeringWITHCO Coworking Space in Izmir, designed by XL Architecture+Engineering proposes a holistic approach to architectural design through strategic planning, global design thinking and art.
