Foreword

The District Statistical Hand Book, Nuapada’ 2020 is a step forward for evidence based

planning with compilation of sub-district level information. It furnishes block-wise statistics on

Area & Population, Agriculture, Co-operation, Forest, Fisheries, Live Stock & Animal

Husbandry, Industry & Mining, Power, Transport & Communication, Education, Health and

Family Welfare, Banking, Revenue, Police, Crime and Judiciary, Labour & Employment, Public

Distribution, Local Bodies, Election, Women & Child Welfare Programme, Poverty Alleviation

Programme, Disaster Statistics etc. Besides, the publication provides district wise information

on selected indicators which helps to access the relative position of the district in the State.

This publication will be a handy guide to the line Departments at the District and State

level for sectoral and decentralized planning. This will also carter to the district and block level

data requirement for Non-Government Organizations working in the field.

I acknowledge with thanks the valuable help and co-operation of various Government

Offrcer and staffs of District Planning and Monitoring Unit (Statistical Wing) Nuapada

and State level by the staffs and Officers of Directorate of Economics and Statistics,

Odisha, Bhubaneswar from the various Government/Private Offices. It contains data

SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : NUAPADA

1. Introduction: Nuapada district is one of the western located districts in Odisha. It lies

between 82⁰ 20’ to 82⁰ 53’ East longitude and between 20⁰ 0’ to 21⁰ 5’ North latitude. It is

bounded by the Baragarh district in north, Kalahandi district in south, Bolangir district in the

east and Chhatishgarh state in the west.

2. Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April

and May and cold during December and January The monsoon generally breaks during

the month of June, Annual rainfall of the district was 1401.2 m.m. in 2020 which is higher

than the normal rainfall (1286.4 m.m.).

3. Area and Population : The district has an area of 3852 sq.Kms. and 61.04 lakhs of

population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 2.47 percent of the states territory

and shares 1.45 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district

is 158 per sq. Kms.. as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 668 villages

(including 12 un-inhabited villages) covering 5 blocks. 5 Tahasils and 1 Subdivisions. As

per 2011 census the schedule caste population is 82159 (13.5 %) and schedule tribe

population 206327 (33.8 %). The literacy percentage of the district covers 57.3 against

72.9 of the state.

4. Agriculture : During the year 2019-20, the net area sown was 107 thousand hectares

against 4102 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 3166423

quintals, 24 quintals wheat,32925 quintals maize, 3245 quintals ragi, 9168 quintals mung,

10555 quintals biri, 3422 quintals kulthi, and 1375 quintals till, 9698 quintals groundnuts,

65 quintals mustrd,143 quintal potato and 4133 quintals sugarcane. During 2019-20, the

total fertilizers used in Nuapada district is about 11157 MT with a breakage of 6623 MT

nitrogenous, 3344 MT phosphatic and 1190 MT pottasic and the consumption of fertilizer

per hectare is 38 Kg.

5. Irrigation: During the year 2019-20, it is reported by Chief District Agriculture Officer that

the irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 56483 hectares and 31947

hectares respectively through all sources including major / medium irrigation projects in the

district.

6. Co-operation : The district has 26 agricultural Co-operative societies with a membership of

53972. The loan advances is to the tune of Rs. 9578.78 lakh as of 2019-20. The

agricultural credit Co-operative societies as more or less evenly distributed across the 5

Blocks of the district. Besides that there are 1 marketing co-operative societies in different

blocks of Nuapada district.

7. Forest : District of Nuapada has abundant of Forest area that contributed 49.52 % of the

total geographical area of the district.

8. Veterinary Services : During 2019-20, Milk production is 27.36 thousand MT, production

of eggs is 59.39 lakhs nos. and production of meat is 3.20 thousand MT in this district.

During 2019-20, 8 nos. of Hospitals and Dispensaries, 51 nos. of Livestock Aid centers

and 50 Artificial Insemination Centers were functioning in the district.

9. Industry and Mining : During the year 2019-20, 910 nos. of micro small and medium

enterprises have established with total capital investment of about Rs. 4333.46 lakhs with

2687 nos. of Employment generated in Nuapada district.

10. Power : During the year 2019-20, villages so far electrified as on 30.03.2020 is 656 which

constitutes 100 % to the total villages of the district.

11. Transport & Communication : During 2019-20, 93.42 Kms. of National Highways, 142.30

kms of state highways, 17.33 kms. of Major district road, 305.59 kms of other district roads,

1854.99 kms of Inter-village road, 947.57 kms of Intra-village road, 299.96 Kms of village

roads and 915.30 kms of forest roads are operating in the district.

12. Education: There were 537 nos. of primary schools, 470 nos. of Up-primary schools, 171

nos. of Secondary schools and 31 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2019-20.

The teacher pupil ratio in the primary, upper primary, Secondary School stood at 15, 22

and 26 respectively.

13. Health: The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private

individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 2 nos. DHH, 5 nos. CHC,

17 nos. PHC of the Allopathic medical institutions including 96 nos. of Sub Centre in the

district during the year 2019-20. There were 5 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 10

nos. of Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2019-20.

14. Banking: As on March, 2020, there were 64 nos. of All Banks having 1998.36 crore

rupees deposit and 870.05 crore rupees credit in the district. The district has banking

branches network of 64 out of which 26 (40.63%) in semi-urban area and 38(59.38%) in

rural areas. The total number of ATMs in the district stood at 62

15. Collection of Land Revenue: The total collection of land revenue in the district for 2019-

20 was Rs. 235.10 lakh.

16. Poverty Alleviation Programme: In the district total no. of Job card issued was 1.33 Lakh

and total no. of person days generated was 24.95 lakh during the year 2019-20.

17. Disaster Scenario: In terms of Disaster activity the district in graded as moderate risk

zone for wind & cyclone, protected area for flood, very high risk zone for drought, very low

damage zone and less damage zone for earthquake & minor accident prone area for

accident.
