Acknowledgement

planning with compilation of sub-district level information. It furnishes block-wise statistics on
Area & Population, Agriculture, Co-operation, Forest, Fisheries, Live Stock & Animal
Husbandry, Industry & Mining, Power, Transport & Communication, Education, Health and
Family Welfare, Banking, Revenue, Police, Crime and Judiciary, Labour & Employment, Public
Distribution, Local Bodies, Election, Women & Child Welfare Programme, Poverty Alleviation
Programme, Disaster Statistics etc. Besides, the publication provides district wise information
on selected indicators which helps to access the relative position of the district in the State.
This publication will be a handy guide to the line Departments at the district and State
level for sectoral and decentralized planning. This will also carter to the district and block level
data requirement for Non-Government Organizations working in the field.

SOCIO ECONOMIC PROFILE : DEOGARH
1 Introduction : Deogarh district is one of the northern located districts in Odisha. It lies
between 84o 28’ to 85o 15’ East longitude and between 21o 11’ to 21o 43’ North latitude. It is
bounded by the Sundargarh district in North, Angul district in the east Sambalpur district in
the West.
2 Climate : The climate condition of the district is generally hot with high humidity during April
to May and cold during November to December The monsoon generally breaks during the
month of June, Annual rainfall of the district was 1477.5 m.m. in 2018 which is lower than the
normal rainfall (1582.5 m.m.).
3 Area and Population : The district has an area of 2940 sq.Kms. and 3.12 lakhs of
population as per 2011 census. The district accounts for 1.89 percent of the states territory
and shares 0.74 percent of the states population. The density of population of the district is
106 per sq. Kms.. as against 270 person per sq.km of the state. It has 878 villages (including
160 un-inhabited villages) covering 3 blocks. 3 Tahasils and 1 Subdivisions. As per 2011
census the schedule caste population is 52112 (16.70 %) and schedule tribe population
110400 (35.30 %). The literacy percentage of the district covers 72.6 against 72.9 of the
state.
4 Agriculture : During the year 2017-18, the net area sown was 45 thousand hectares against
3863 thousand hectares of the state. The production of paddy was 1299709 quintals, 1824
quintals maize, 6279 quintals mung, 4195 quintals biri, 972 quintals kulthi, and 2041 quintals
till, 1690 quintals groundnuts,438 quintals mustard, 18508 quintal potato and 1328 quintals
sugarcane. During 2017-18, the total fertilizers used in Deogarh district is about 3644 MT with
a breakage of 2093 MT nitrogenous, 1091 MT phosphatic and 460 MT pottasic and the
consumption of fertilizer per hectare is 34 Kg.
5 Irrigation: During the year 2017-18, it is reported by Deputy Director Agriculture that the
irrigation potential created during Kharif and Rabi are 26273 hectares and 11757 hectares
respectively through all sources including major / medium irrigation projects in the district.
6 Co-operation : The district has 29 agricultural Co-operative societies with a membership of
50957 The agricultural credit Co-operative societies as more or less evenly distributed across
the 8 Blocks of the district.

7 Forest : District of Deogarh has abundant of Forest area that contributed 53.07 % of the total
geographical area of the district.
8 Veterinary Services : During 2017-18, Milk production is 13.73 thousand MT, production of
eggs is 86.54 lakhs nos. and production of meat is 2.00 thousand MT in this district. During
2017-18, 4 nos. of Hospitals and Dispensaries, 20 nos. of Livestock Aid centers and 24
Artificial Insemination Centers were functioning in the district.
9 Industry and Mining : During the year 2017-18, 807 nos. of micro small and medium
enterprises have established with total capital investment of about Rs 1502.63 lakhs with
2966 nos. of Employment generated in Deogarh district.
10 Power : During the year 2017-18, villages so far electrified as on 31.03.2018 is 706 which
constitutes 98.3 % to the total villages of the district.
11 Transport & Communication : During 2017-18, 186.65 Kms. of National Highways, 111.03
kms of state highways, 37.86 kms. of Major district road, 168.94 kms of other district roads,
2288.22 kms of Inter-village road, 1429.38 kms of Intra-village road, 308.53 Kms of village
roads and 117.25 kms of forest roads are operating in the district.
12 Education: There were 365 nos. of primary schools, 237 nos. of Up-primary schools, 99 nos.
of Secondary schools and 14 nos. of general colleges in the district during 2017-18. The
teacher pupil ratio in the primary, upper primary, Secondary School stood at 11, 16 and 18
respectively.
13 Health: The medical facilities are provided by different agencies like Govt., Private
individuals and voluntary organizations in the district. There were 1 nos. DHH, 4 nos. CHC, 8
nos. PHC of the Allopathic medical institutions including 42 nos. of Sub Centre in the district
during the year 2017-18. There were 1 nos. of Homoeopathic dispensaries and 5 nos. of
Ayurvedic dispensaries in the district during the year 2017-18.
14 Banking: As on December, 2018, there were 42 nos. of All Banks having 1179.06 crore
rupees deposit and 431.34 crore rupees credit in the district. The district has banking
branches network of 42 out of which 2 (4.76 %) were in the urban area18 (42.86 %) in semi-
urban area and 22 (52.38 %) in rural areas. The total number of ATMs in the district stood at

15 Collection of Land Revenue: The total collection of land revenue in the district for 2017-18
was Rs. 632.77 lakh.
16 Poverty Alleviation Programme: In the district total no. of Job card issued was 0.65 Lakh
and total no. of person days generated was 14.66 lakh during the year 2017-18.
17 Disaster Scenario: In terms of Disaster activity the district in graded as moderate risk zone
for wind & cyclone, protected area for flood, Very high risk zone for drought, moderate
damage zone and less damage zone for earthquake & minor accident prone area for
accident.
