The University Mace Symbols of authority and power, maces were originally hand weapons designed for use against armor. Topped by the .flame of knowledge, the University mace has the University seal as a focal point and unifying element. Tassels of maroon and white hang from the shaft of fourteen rods of black walnut, 'symbolizing the fourteen counties of the Commonwealth. ·

The head of the mace is gold plate over highly polished brass. Complex curves radiating from the hub in which the seal is centered reflect light in constantly changing patterns, symbolic of the many-faceted environment of the university life.

Academic Costume aud Regalia Academic regalia represent traditions which come down from the Middle Ages, when European universities were institutions of the church. At that time, robes were a common form of dress, particularly for offzcials of church and state. The cut of the robe, its adornment, and the colors used comprised a specialized heraldry that conveyed the rank and station of the wearer. A.t the universities, both faculty and students were considered to be part of the church hierarchy and were expected to wear the prescribed gowns. As society moved toward more modern forms of dress, only royalty, clergy, judges, and academics retained the traditional regalia, reserving it only for ceremonial use.

Please note:

Modern academic regalia retain some of the symbols of the earlier forms of ceremonial dress. The gown tends to be fullest, longest, and heaviest for the doctoral degree. The sleeves for the bachelor:s and master's gowns are typically open at the wrist~ Cuffs are more common on the doctoral gown, and its sleeves are adorned by three velvet strips, symbolic of the degree. The mantle worn about the shoulders, called the hood, is the remnant of functional headgear worn for warmth in the unheated classrooms of medieval universities. Today its colors refer to the school that granted the degree and the level or discipline of the degree (e.g., navy blue for Ph.D., pink for music).

The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. However, almost three dozen universities in this country and many others throughout the world have adopted more colorful robes. In general, this practice has been limited to schools more than one hundred years old. Among the schools represented by colorful robes at commencement ceremonies are Boston College, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, Neu· York, Oxford, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Tufts, and Yale Universities, and the Universities of California, Kansas, and Rhode Island.

The audience is asked to remain seated throughout this ceremony. At the end of the ceremony, those attending the diploma-presentation ceremony for College of Arts and Sciences graduates should continue to remain seated. Those attending individual college ceremonies at other locations will be invited to rise and leave college by college. The locations for these ceremonies are: College of Management. Bruce Marks Doctor of Fine Arts

Elaine H. Kim received a bachelor of arts degree in English and American literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963, a master of arts degree in English and comparative literature from Columbia University in 1965, and a Ph.D. in education from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1976.

She is a professor of Asian American Studies at Berkeley, where she has taught since 1969. She has also served as the coordinator of Asian American Studies and as assistant dean in the College of Letters and Science. In 1990 she became the first woman of color to be appointed faculty assistant for the status of women, a position involving responsibility for developing and monitoring steps to insure equality for women faculty.

Elaine Kim's books include Asian American Literature: An Introduction to the Writings and Their Social Context (1982), and, as co-editor, Making Waves, a collection of writing about Asian American women (1989). She has written and lectured on such topics as American literature and social movements; the educa­tion of Koreans in America; racism, patriarchy, and Asian American women; and Filipino American literature and social history.

She has also been an activist with Asian Women United of California, the Korean Community Center of the East Bay, the Japan Resource Center, and the National Organization for Women's Project on Equal Educational Rights, among others. Recognition of her achievements has come from both the academic and the wider community; she has been a Fulbright lecturer, an honorary member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, and a winner of the Woman Warrior Award from the Pacific Asian Women's Bay Area Coalition.

In recognizing Elaine H. Kim, we honor a woman whose life and work beckon us toward a vision of justice and multicultural understanding, and whose achieve­ments demonstrate that commitment to scholarship and commitment to community service can support and nourish each other.

Bruce Marks was born in Brooklyn and attended New York City's High School of Performing Arts. He later studied at the J uilliard School of Music and at Brandeis University.

In 1956, he joined the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. He became a principal dancer with the American Ballet Theatre in 1961 and the first American principal dancer with the Royal Danish Ballet in 1971. He was named artistic co-director of Ballet West in 1978, and in 1985 became artistic director of the Boston Ballet.

To say that much has happened since his arrival would be understatement. The company has broken previous box office records. While continuing to stage classic ballet-including the renowned joint American-Soviet production of Swan Lake­he has given strong emphasis to encouraging new work. Boston's South End is now home to one of the largest and best equipped dance centers in the country, headquarters of the company and of the Boston Ballet Center for Dance Educa­tion. Over 300 students from Boston's inner city annually study dance in the center's "City Dance" program. And in a partnership with UMass Boston, master teachers from Boston Ballet give classes in the University's Dance in Theatre Arts Program, while the University provides company members with the opportunity for continuing education.

Bruce Marks is a national leader in the arts as well. He has been the chair of Dance/USA, the service organization representing professional dance companies. He was instrumental in establishing the National Choreography Project for the National Endowment for the Arts, and has judged many national and international competitions.

In honoring Bruce Marks, we recognize the lifelong achievement of a man who has insisted on a vision of the arts as an enterprise founded on excellence and grounded in community, and who has had the strength and energy to make that vision real.

Cathy E. Minehan Doctor of Laws

Pedro Rossello Doctor of Laws

Cathy E. Minehan received a bachelor of science degree in political science from the University of Rochester, and a master of business administration degree from New York University. In 1968 she took a position at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as a bank examiner trainee, the start of a long and successful career with the Bank.

While at the New York Fed, she worked in supervision and regulation, and in public information, and served as assistant to the president. In 1987, she was appointed senior vice president of the New York Federal Reserve Bank for high value payments, securities, and accounting operations.

Throughout her long career with the Federal Reserve Bank, Cathy Minehan has been involved with the operations side of the Bank. She is an expert in payments systems, and in maintaining payments stability in situations of financial and operational crisis. She has been described as possessing "fmancial acumen, combined with grace under fire."

When she came to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in 1991 as first vice president and chief operating officer, she was the first woman to hold that position at any of the nation's twelve regional Federal Reserve Banks. In 1994, she was named president and chief executive officer of the Boston Fed. She has said that she wants to develop the Bank's expertise in economic research, and in supervision and regulation of the financial services industry. She also believes that the Boston Fed can play a significant role in bringing groups together to further community development, and she has already taken some steps in that direction.

We honor Cathy E. Minehan for the pioneering role she has played in her profession, for her work in an institution of great importance to the nation, and for her leadership in encouraging cooperation among citizens, community groups, and the private sector in the Boston area.

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Pedro Rossell& received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1966. He graduated from Yale University's school of medicine in 1970, and went on to specialize in general and pediatric surgery at Harvard University. In 1981 he received a master's degree in public health from the University of Puerto Rico.

Pedro Rossell& 'selection as governor of Puerto Rico in 1992 was a sweeping electoral victory, one more remarkable achievement for someone who truly merits the over-used title of "Renaissance man." Before entering politics, Dr. Rossell& had a distinguished career in pediatric surgery. During another active career in public health, he served as director of the city of San Juan Health Department. His tennis career began when he was in high school; later he captained the tennis team at Notre Dame, gained national ranking in his age group, and went on to win five Puerto Rico men's singles championships.

When he did enter politics, it was to run for Congress in 1988 in a race that almost unseated Puerto Rico's incumbent representative. In 1991 he became chairman of his pro-statehood party, and led it to a strong win in the 1992 election.

Thus far in his term Governor Rossell& might be said to have exhibited both his surgeon's thoroughness and his tennis player's energy. He has undertaken major reforms in health care, public education, and the judicial system. He has worked to increase Puerto Rico's involvement in national Latino affairs, and has been personally active with the National, Southern, and Democratic Governors' Associations.

We honor Pedro Rossell& for the exercise of his energetic dedication in the fields of medicine, of public health, and of politics, where he has brought to bear his experience and learning to become a leader for his commonwealth and for the nation.

Arnold Shapiro Doctor of Fine Arts

Arnold Shapiro, a native of southern California, graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles. A television producer for more than thirty years, he has produced ten series, six television movies, and more than fifty primetime specials and documentaries.

Throughout his career, Arnold Shapiro has found ways to communicate important messages to mass audiences. In 1978 his documentary Scared Straight attracted nationwide attention. It described an unusual program designed to give New Jersey teenagers in trouble with the law second thoughts about a life of crime, by having them visit incarcerated criminals in Rahway State Prison. His Peabody Award­winning Break the Silence: Kids Against Child Abuse was the first primetime network documentary to be aired without commercials. The first primetime drama broadcast commercial free was his production Kids Killing Kids, which appeared on two major networks. And in 1992 Scared Silent: Exposing and Ending Child Abuse became the only non-news program to be aired on three networks simulta­neously-it was also the most-watched documentary special ever broadcast on American television. Since 1988, Mr. Shapiro has been the executive producer of the CBS program Rescue 911, which is now in its sixth season, and is credited with helping viewers save more than 300 lives using what they have learned from watching the program.

Arnold Shapiro's many honors and awards include an Academy Award for best feature-length documentary, for Scared Straight, and 13 Emmys. He has received a Peabody Award, three Humanitas prizes, two Silver Gavel awards from the American Bar Association, and Long Island University's George Polk Journalism Award.

In honoring Arnold Shapiro, we pay tribute to a man whose deep concern for the people television reaches has triumphed over the exigencies and pressures of the commercial medium itself, both to create art, and to contribute to his country in very important ways.
