(Continued on page 13)
For aging poet Yeats, time was an enemy. He penned: I spit in the
face of time that has transfigured me.” But, Benjamin Franklin kept
two boxes on his desk. One box was marked: “Problems it will take
time to solve.” The other: “Problems time has already solved.” For
Franklin, time was a friend.
But one thing is certain: time moves relentlessly forward. It cannot be
hoarded like manna, nor can it be reversed. Life’s most crucial
question is – how are we using time? Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel,
professor and philosopher, wrote: “Judaism is a religion of time, aiming at the
sanctification of time.” And time is sanctified when we use it – to forgive and ask
forgiveness; to remember things too long forgotten, and to forget things too long
remembered; to reclaim sacred things too casually abandoned, and to abandon shabby
things too highly cherished.
Time flies – but we are the navigators. In our new Congregation Shir Shalom, we each
have the greatest of all opportunities: the chance to change (reform), to begin anew
(reconstruct).
As we face the coming year of 5773, together in our astonishing new enterprise, may we
hurry to heed the words of the great Psalmist: “Teach us to number our days so that we
may attain a heart of wisdom.” May we take the time to overcome, to create, and go
forward “from strength to strength.”
Your Rabbis and Cantor, the entire Shir Shalom staff, your officers and board, will work
tirelessly to advance our goals. Please, friends, take time to join us in this most
promising and exciting year.
Rabbi Irwin A. Tanenbaum, D.D.
At a recent Music Committee meeting, Cantor Sharon was
explaining the service outline for this year’s Yizkor service, when a
few of the members of the group indicated they were close to tears.
How amazing that even a mere mention of prayers can illicit such a
strong emotional response.
That is the High Holy Days in a nutshell – a time when our minds
and hearts are overflowing with feeling. We are flooded with
memories, not only from this past year, but from our entire life, as
we try to come to grips with both the many wonders available to us in this world, and the
finitude of human existence.
While there were many differences in the way our two legacy congregations – Temple
Beth Am and Temple Sinai - observed the holidays, each community shared in the goal
of making meaning of the most meaningful time of the Jewish year. Rabbi Tanenbaum,
Cantor Sharon, myself, and the many committees that helped plan this year’s services,
can assure you that Congregation Shir Shalom will continue this pursuit, not only for this
year’s High Holy Days, but for the many, many more that lie ahead.
Welcome to the year 5773,
Rabbi Alex
From Our Rabbis
2
This year’s High Holy Days at Congregation Shir Shalom will witness many things that
come in twos: two prayer books, two choirs, two Rabbis, and two Rabbis’ High Holy
Day messages for Chai Notes. In honor of our first High Holy Days together as a com-
munity, both of us would like to wish you a Shanah Tovah U’Metukah, a Sweet New
Year! We look forward to seeing you at services.

From Cantor Sharon Eve Colbert, M.J.S.M.
As I was wheeling my brand spanking new recycling cart, courtesy of the Town
of Amherst, to my backyard, I thought of S’lichot. What? S’lichot are penitential
prayers that are spoken in earnest during the Hebrew month of Elul, which leads up
to Tishrei and the High Holy Days.
Recycling. The essence of the Jewish year. In secular life, it’s the Form 1040,
birthdays, oil changes, report cards – it goes on and repeats. On a private, soulful
level, there are things that shouldn’t be recycled and carried through from year to
year – regret, guilt, grudges. All these potentially damaging character traits are
listed in the Vidui (confessional) portion of our Days of Awe Services. Bad things
done over and over again – can I say it? Is it politically incorrect? STOP
RECYCLING!
In the Torah parshah Metsora (Lev. 16:7), the Israelites place their sins on an
unblemished male goat, and send it off to the legendary Azazel (a desert goat-
demon, as cited by Ibn Ezra and Nachmanides: Hertz Commentary), a demon so
evil, he could absorb their sins. What in modern times is the dispensary for our sins?
That rolling cart by your backdoor, of course! Every week, we throw our household
trash into it, and roll it to the street – there, a big noisy, smelly piece of machinery
takes it – good riddance! A material Tashlich.
Tashlich – “you will toss” is what we desire to do with all those bad habits (recycled
undesirable behaviors). Traditionally, we gather as a supportive faith community to
rid ourselves of non-material, self-destructive burdens that we carry as individuals.
We toss, pitch, maybe even heave pieces of bread into the creek near our building.
We display our desire not to recycle our non-material trash for another season. It’ll
be good for you, I promise.
L’Shanah Tovah Tikateivu
From the President
Dear Friends: The historic merger of Temple Beth Am and Temple Sinai has been
successfully completed, and we begin the New Year 5773 as Congregation Shir
Shalom. With the cooperation, help and support of our clergy, our staff and our en-
tire congregation, we have begun a new era for us all, and we have much to look
forward to in the years ahead. Our future looks very bright. My family and I would
like to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and I hope to see everyone at High Holy
Day Services.
Todd Sugarman
From the Vice President of Administration
Shalom to all of my new and old friends at Congregation Shir Shalom. This High
Holy Day season is especially meaningful, because it is our first time celebrating
these holidays together as a merged community. This has been a time of change
for all of us, but we are looking toward a bright future for our newly-formed Temple.
I wish you and your families a year of health, prosperity, and all things good, and
look forward to getting to know more of you in the coming year.
Jill Hamilton

From Sharon Malek Jacobs – Director of Education
It has been said that to be a Jew is not just to remember what has been, but what can be.
This is the season when my thoughts turn to Jewish introspection. It is a sacred time for me, as I focus on welcoming the New
Year of 5773 and a new Religious School year, that includes faculty, students and their families. If there is one thing that I have
learned as Director of Education, it is that no matter how diligently I prepare and plan over the summer, I should expect the
unexpected. I approach this situation from a positive stance. I eagerly anticipate what might come along that is interesting and
challenging. I hope that my experience, faith and attitude will guide me to embrace opportunities for which I did not plan.
My reflection on the past year and dreams for the year ahead reach a crescendo on Yom Kippur. Human beings usually don’t
fast voluntarily. Jews fast to remind themselves of the work ahead. When our bodies and minds begin to grumble, that is a
reminder for us to consider those who have so much less. I think about Tikkun Olam and extending help to so many whose
basic needs are not being met. How can I inspire those whom I reach, to also reach out and extend their hands to others?
Our Religious School needs help to continue to give all the children who pass through our halls a quality Jewish education. Our
economy, being what it is, may impose an educational and spiritual fast on some of the youngest members of our community.
Perhaps, during your fast this Yom Kippur, you can think about reaching out to make a scholarship donation so all of our
students will have the opportunity to put their hopes and dreams into a Jewish context.
My family joins me in wishing Congregation Shir Shalom health, happiness, peace, prosperity and sweetness in 5773.

Fasting
Every Jewish person over the age
of Bar/Bat Mitzvah is expected to
fast on Yom Kippur. Besides the
lessons that fasting teaches about
self-denial and appreciation of what
we have, it provides a physical com-
plement to the emotional and spiri-
tual cleansing of the Day of Atone-
ment. Children should be encour-
aged to fast if they show an interest
in doing so. For a pre-Bar/Bat Mitz-
vah, the fast may involve skipping a
meal during Yom Kippur rather than
a full day’s fast. Pregnant women
and nursing mothers should ab-
stain from fasting as should any
person who is ill or who has been
advised against fasting by a phy-
sician. Let common sense guide
you in the fulfillment of this mitzvah.
Child Care Available for
High Holy Days
Congregation Shir Shalom pro-
vides complimentary child care for
children in third grade and younger
during morning services on Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
Children in fourth grade and above
are expected to attend services
with their parents. Older children
should not find it difficult to sit
through the entire service. Every
parent must be responsible to
assure that his/her child does not
linger in the foyer, become unruly,
or disturb the child care services.
Families interested in child care
are asked to make reservations
by calling the Temple office at
633-8877, by September 12th,
with the names and ages of
each child.
Please indicate which service
(early or late) you will be attending.
High Holy Day child care will be
provided. Donations for child care
are appreciated.

Joanne M. Rekoon
From the Co-President’s of Sisterhood
As we get ready to begin a New Year, we pause a moment to
take a deep breath and appreciate where we are. A year ago,
none of us expected that we would be observing High Holy
Day Services as Congregation Shir Shalom. A few very dedi-
cated people moved mountains to make it happen. The best
way to thank them is for all of us to come together as one,
and commit ourselves to the success of Congregation Shir
Shalom. Join with us, won’t you? We wish all of you a very
healthy and happy New Year. L’Shanah Tovah.
Marina Finkelstein and Julia Cohan
From the Co-President’s of
the Men’s Group
L’Shanah Tovah! The Men’s Group wants to wish everyone
at Congregation Shir Shalom a happy and healthy New Year.
We are looking forward to a wonderful year, making new
friends and beginning new traditions. We’re also happy to
bring back an old favorite. Bubbe’s Kitchen will be held on
Sunday, November 4th. Stay tuned for more details. In the
meantime, have a happy and sweet New Year.

“This is how it was.” These are the opening words of My Russian Grandmother and her American Vacuum
Cleaner, a memoir by Israeli novelist Meir Shalev, and they are echoed often, as Shalev meanders his way
through the history of his family in Israel, in a humorous, conversational style.
The central (human) figure of this charming book is Shalev’s Grandma Tonia, who came to Israel in 1923 as a young woman,
married her deceased sister’s husband, and settled with him in the moshav of Nahalal. Difficult, demanding, and unrelentingly
opposed to the dirt and dust that permeated her adopted land, she finds herself the conflicted owner of a shiny new
“svieeperrr” sent to them by her husband’s “double traitor” (capitalist and American) brother in California.
Interwoven with Shalev’s account of his family’s history and his own life, the “svieeperrrr,” imprisoned in a locked room for
forty years, after only one use, becomes a character in its own right. His story of “this is how it was,” provides a wonderful
look at Israel’s beginnings, though the lives of one contentious, but irrepressibly vital family.

8th - 12th Grade Comparative Religions Class
This year, the monthly Sunday program that is offered to our older/post B’nei Mitzvah students is again named,
Comparative Religions.
Students will continue to acquire a deeper understanding of our neighbors’ religions, and similarities or differences
with Judaism. The focus this year will be on Buddism, Hinduism and Islam. We are hoping for face-to-face conver-
sations with representatives from these religions.
We are fortunate to have Gail Lewis, who is very involved with CSS, and who brings a breadth of experience with
interfaith studies, including the Network of Religious Communities and the Williamsville Interfaith Clergy.
Class meets from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM on the following Sundays:
10/14, 11/18, 12/9, 1/13, 2/10, 3/10, 4/14 & 5/5
There are still spaces available in this class.
Students do not need to have attended sessions last year to join this class.
For information and/or to register, please call the Religious School office at 633-8953.

A Jewish Congregation in Göttingen, Germany
Members of former Temple Beth Am may not be aware of the cooperation between former Temple Sinai, and a Jewish congre-
gation in Göttingen, Germany, which was initiated several years ago.
The Jewish community of Göttingen was totally obliterated by the Nazis. The last Jews were deported to the annihilation
camp in 1942. There was no organized Jewish life in Göttingen for many years. The “Society of Christian and Jews Working
Together,” which was formed shortly after the defeat of the Nazis, strove to keep the memory of the Jewish past alive. In 1994,
after Jewish immigrants came from the former Soviet Union, the Jewish congregation, Juedische Gemeinde Göttingen, was re-
born. At present, it has about 180 members, a majority from the former Soviet Union. Unlike many other new congregations
in Germany, which are Orthodox, the Göttingen congregation is “Liberal,” somewhere between what we in the U.S. consider
Reform and Conservative - close to Reconstructionist.
There is full equality of men and women. With the financial help of a group of Göttingen non-Jewish citizens, the congregation
was able to bring a small synagogue, which had survived Kristallnacht, to Göttingen, and to restore it. Georg and Wilma Iggers,
who have been members of both Temple Sinai and the Göttingen congregation, initiated cooperation between the two Temples
on various projects: Two years ago, both congregations worked together on the repair of the Torah Scrolls; this past November,
the Society of Christians and Jews invited Rabbi Alex to participate in the annual observance of Kristallnacht (now properly
called the Pogrom in Germany). While in Göttingen, Rabbi Alex performed a funeral, when the Rabbi from Hannover was
unable to come.
Finally, the Göttingen congregation and Temple Sinai have worked closely together with an interfaith student group at Colgate
University, who will be sending a group of Jewish and Christian students to Göttingen, in May 2013, to meet German Jewish,
Christian, and Muslim students. Georg Iggers has established the contacts in Göttingen, and Rabbi Alex has been fully informed.
The Society of Christians and Jews is co-sponsoring the project, and will see to it that all of the Colgate students stay with fami-
lies in Göttingen.
Georg and Wilma Iggers hope that the cooperation begun by Temple Sinai will be continued by Congregation Shir Shalom.
If anyone would like additional information about the Göttingen congregation, please feel free to contact George at 639-7605,
or email him at [email protected].
