This gave me theencouragement to set up the first Progressive Jewishcommunity in Hungary." Kati's education is onlyone of the many projects supported by the YESFund. Religious SchoolFrom the educator... Shabbat, High Holy Days and mitzvot. It is our

responsibility to learn the Hebrew, not overlook it.What year does Hebrew school start? Does my childhave to take Hebrew? Do you have a religious schoolprogram without Hebrew? Is there conversationalHebrew?

These are just a few of the questions that come myway regarding the Hebrew program associated withour school. I thought I might take a few minutes -or a few lines to tell you some of the specifics of ourprogram

The Temple Rodef Shalom Religious School is madeup of many parts - all of which we are very proud. It is the intertwining of these parts that makes ourschool our special place. It seems as though peopletake for granted the Jewish studies part of ourprogram but there remains some confusion about thenecessity of learning Hebrew.

Our school does not offer a "Hebrewless track". I amalways puzzled by the families that believe thatHebrew is only for bar and bat mitzvah. I would offerthat Hebrew is much more. It is a connection to ourJewish friends around the world. It is also a link toour ancestors and to future generations. What aspecial group we are that we can be connected in alanguage that is all our own.

At Rodef Shalom, Hebrew study begins early withmusic as we sing songs both in Hebrew and inEnglish. Formal letter recognition commences ingrade I and letters and vowels are blended intosyllables in grade 2. By grade 3, Hebrew readingbecomes a part of our regular routine and grades 4-6involve the study of most of the prayers we find inour worship service.

Our program right now, considering the time (or lackthereof) that we have for learning a language, involves only Siddur (prayerbook) Hebrew. And, forparents and other adults who want to keep up - orbrush up, adult Hebrew classes are taughtperiodically. Additionally, we have a set of parentHebrew guidelines that are available as a companionto what our students learn in grades 4-6. If you needhelp getting a grasp of the Hebrew, just let us know.

Word of the Week continues...

November 1 - K'dushahK'dushah comes from the Hebrew root meaning"holy". It can be translated as holiness. K'dushahcomes from doing the things that God wants us todo, that is acting in the image of God. In the book ofLeviticus we find a portion that is often referred to asthe "holiness code". In it are examples of how we canlive in the image of God. K'dushah is all about living alife that respects people, helps others and doesn't goagainst nature. To be holy is to do holy!

November 8 - NeshamahNeshamah is the Hebrew word for "soul". Eachperson has a unique soul that makes them the personthat they are. The Torah teaches that God isresponsible for the souls by breathing life into us andat the end of life, our souls return to God. The time inbetween, though, our souls work together with ourbodies to be the kind of people we are. Each of usmust take responsibility for our body, our soul andour actions!

November 15 - EmunahEmunah means "faith": believing in God andknowing that God believes in you. The word "amen"comes from emunah - as a way of saying "me too"or "I can believe that too". Emunah can beexperienced in many ways: through a sunset, a pieceof art, quiet reflection or a large family gathering. It isa time of inner peace and a moment of belonging. Itis the time when we say "amen".

November 22 - Pukuah nefeshThe value of Pikuah nefesh is all about saving a life.Saving a life is more important than anything else inJewish law. In the Torah, God tells us to choose life.Pikuah nefesh is the way we show God that we arechoosing life above everything else.
