Discretionary Guests: This category includes any non-member who has shown Rabbi Gross or the Membership Committee a genuine interest in joining our congregation. These tickets will enable the guest to attend the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, including the daytime and evening services. Discretionary tickets will only be distributed in advance of the High Holy Days to a very limited number of guests.

Now for some specifics:

1. Everyone, including members and guests, must have a ticket in order to be admitted to each of the evening and morning services. The tickets are non-transferable. No ticket is required for any of the Youth Services or the Yom Kippur Meditation, Afternoon, Memorial, and Concluding Services. We encourage you to invite your friends and family to these services.

2. Members in good standing must make arrangements to obtain tickets from the temple office for their guests who qualify under the categories listed above. No other guest tickets will be available other than those outlined above. Please note that relatives or grown children of members who live in Houston must be members in their own right to attend services.

3. Tickets will be mailed on or before September 9, 2016. To obtain tickets after that date, please contact Melissa in the temple office to make arrangements. During the High Holy Days, tickets will be available for pickup before 8:00 p.m. for the evening services and 10:45 a.m. for the morning services. Tickets will not be available once services begin.

4. If you have not received your ticket(s), please email Melissa in the temple office at [email protected].

This year, our High Holy Days discussion hour on Yom Kippur will focus on Buddhism. We are pleased to welcome Claire Villareal to HCRJ. Claire will lead a discussion on atonement, salvation and peace as articulated through Buddhist teachings and practices. She will also lead us in a guided meditation incorporating the themes of this season. Claire has been practicing and studying Buddhism since 1997. She received her PhD from Rice University’s Department of Religion and has taught academic courses at Rice and UH Clear Lake. She has also led mediation sessions at Dawn Mountain, the Jung Center, Discovery Green, and various other settings in Houston and Fort Worth. She is now the Programs Director at Dawn Mountain Center for Tibetan Buddhism.

Join us for a month full of Special Shabbat Services!

October 7: Shabbat Shuvah, Family Shabbat, Family Dinner and Game Night Shabbat Shuvah is the Sabbath between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The name is derived from the opening word of the Haftarah reading that urges us: Shuvah Yisrael "Return, O Israel, to the Eternal your God." What does that mean for each of us? To whom or what might we be returning? Is it to a sense of goodness? Is it to a sense of being loved? Is it to a connection with those from whom we have strayed? Is it to God? Join us on Friday Night, October 7, for a Sabbath experience as we seek to find ways to direct our good intentions from Rosh Hashanah and set a path of return as we prepare ourselves for Yom Kippur. It is also Family Shabbat. Join us for Tot Shabbat, Family Dinner and Game Night following services! Kids, please bring your shofars!

October 14: Pink Ribbon Shabbat Please join us as we honor cancer survivors and their families at our second annual Pink Ribbon Shabbat and enjoy a “pink” oneg reception together.

October 21: Consecration Shabbat and Sukkot Celebration Join us for a special Shabbat service as students in our Kindergarten, first and second grade classes participate in a Consecration ceremony, which marks the beginning of a child’s formal Jewish education. We will enjoy an oneg in our Sukkah with sweets, fruits and nuts.

October 28: Simchat Torah Got Shabbat with Klezmer Band Klezmer Music is noted for its joyous melodies. One cannot hear the sounds of Klezmer without feeling the urge to dance (think “Hava Nagilla”). For the second consecutive year, our celebration of Simchat Torah will be coupled with a magical world of Klezmer. Join us for a very special Simchat Torah service on Friday, October 28 as we finish the final words of the Torah and immediately begin anew, symbolically affirming our people’s eternal devotion to the teachings of our faith. Celebrate Torah like never before and enjoy an evening of music and joy. This evening of celebration is appropriate for all ages. Our Simchat Torah Got Shabbat is part of our 60th Anniversary year celebration and is sponsored by Julia Miller.

HCRJ Happenings What a busy month of September it was at HCRJ! We kicked off our 60th Anniversary year with a special Shabbat Service and Tailgate Party, started Religious School, held our first-ever Cars, Coffee and Conversation event and welcomed author Leah Lax, author of Uncovered, for a book discussion.

HCRJ is pleased to participate in Count Me In again this year. Each year, Count Me In donates thousands of gifts to hundreds of children and adults in need during the Chanukah season. The goal of the organization is to help Jewish families celebrate Chanukah by providing them with donations of gifts and other services.

If you are a family in need, know a family in need, would like to be a donor of gifts or provide financial support, please contact Hilary Kamin at [email protected]. HCRJ will be passing out bags that can be filled with gifts and then returned to HCRJ. Our 7th grade students will be volunteering at the Merfish Teen Center sorting gifts on Sunday, December 11 as well as our High School youth group members of HOUSTY. For more information on volunteering, please contact Michelle Renfrow at [email protected].

Grandparents Circle Sunday, October 23, 12:30-2:00PM On October 23, HCRJ will host a new program for Jewish grandparents whose adult children are in an interfaith relationship. The first event will include a light lunch followed by a discussion. The purpose will be to provide support and guidance to Jewish grandparents who are interested in exploring ways to connect their grandchildren to Jewish tradition and practice. The event is modeled after a similar program developed by the Big Tent Judaism Initiative - a new non- denominational nationwide initiative that cultivates new "outside of the box" Jewish programming across the country. Housed at HCRJ but open to the Jewish community at large, the October 23 event for Jewish grandparents is an outgrowth of the Interfaith Couples programming begun at HCRJ in the Spring of 2016 and made possible by the support of the Houston Jewish Community Foundation. Becky and Joe Williams, members of the Houston Jewish community, will lead the discussion at the October gathering and Rabbi Laura Sheinkopf will facilitate. Please RSVP to Justin Deutsch at [email protected].
