Rabbi Adam C. Bellows Thousands of years ago, the ancient Israelites kept time throughout the year by the harvest cycle. Months were either named for what was to be harvested, or they were named according to the agricultural need. For example, an ancient calendar found at Tel Gezer (an ancient site found between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv) lists the months in paleo-Hebrew as: “Two months gathering, two months planting, two months late sowing, one month cutting flax, one month reaping barley, one month reaping and measuring grain, two months pruning, one month summer fruit.” This was the standard practice until the Israelites went into exile in the 6th-Century BCE to Babylonia and adopted their monthly cycle.

Today, Jews no longer keep our time according to the harvest cycle but it is always a part of us. Passover, for instance, once marked the beginning of the wheat harvest, and seven weeks later, Shavuot, marked the barley harvest. For modern Jews, however, who are not focused on agriculture, these holidays and the days in between, take on a new meaning. Passover is a time when we remember the Exodus from Egypt and our subsequent freedom, while Shavuot allows us to celebrate receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai. The days in between are called the Omer which is meant to be a time of self-reflection. This year, for the Omer, United Hebrew will post daily meditations on our Facebook Page so that each day can be its own separate day of mindfulness and reflection. The Omer corresponds to our wandering in the wilderness, seeking order and freedom at Mt. Sinai. Right now, as more and more people receive the COVID vaccine, our ancestors’ wanderings are more relatable. No one is certain when we can truly come together safely again. We are filled with hope and caution. We are counting each day, as one does during the Omer. We are slowly climbing out of the bondage from this past year toward a light of hope and freedom. Usually, at the end of a Passover seder we cry, “Next year in Jerusalem!” Last year and this year we cry, “Next year in person!” May it be so.

United Hebrew Congregation would like to acknowledge an extraordinary gift received from the Jerome F. Brasch Revocable Trust, into the Brasch Building Maintenance Fund, which was established in 1991 by Jerry (z”l) and Rosalie Brasch to help defray the maintenance costs of operating the congregation’s facilities. Jerry was a past president of the congregation, and Rosalie remains a beloved member of our U.H. family. Their fund, and this exceptionally generous gift, will continue to help make an essential difference in the maintenance of our facility and all that we do, and we are profoundly grateful.

United Hebrew continues to work to provide unique, creative and engaging programs for our members and the community. We hope you participated in at least some of our Purim activities. If you did, you experienced first hand these incredible events. We saw over 100 vehicles participate in our CARnival, we packed hundreds of Shalach Manot Boxes which were enjoyed by our members as well as children and their families at Children ’s Hospital, and we produced one of the most creative Purim Shpiel and Megillah Reading EVER (if you haven’t seen it, it is worth you time. You can still view it on the livestream page on the UH website.) Not to mention, we learned how to make amazing hamantaschen; proving that anyone, even me, can make hamantaschen. Just another thank you to our clergy, staff and volunteers for making all of this possible. The work, the incredible effort and the countless hours are greatly appreciate by all.

Engagement Committee 2.0 We are excited to announce the rebranding of our membership engagement committee led by Fanchon Auman and Judy Babitz.

Our UH community is more important than ever to offer comfort and connections with one another. This committee will focus on reaching out to or members, new and old, and “making their day just a little bit better” whether it is with a phone call to just say hello how are you today, to help or to invite someone to attend a virtual or eventually an in-person program together. We are looking for our “ambassadors of loving kindness” who want to make a difference and create an even better community to join us.

Please contact Judy Babitz at [email protected] or Fanchon Auman at [email protected].

Education and Engagement K-5 Education and Engagement Happy April, everyone! We’re getting ready to finish another school year. I am so proud of all of our students and teachers for making it through this crazy year. We’ve been able to learn, celebrate many simchas, have a Purim carnival, and create community, all during a pandemic. We found ways to stick together, even from all around the world. As we finish this year, I hope you reflect on everything we’ve done and how strong we have all been together. Look for 2021-22 registration coming soon so we can continue to grow our community and become even more resilient.

The Czech Scroll Story: from WWII to the Diaspora Monday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom A series of miracles allowed a huge hoard of Czech Torah scrolls to survive the devastation of the Shoah and stand as a testament to the communities that perished. The Memorial Scrolls Trust is committed to maintaining the legacy of these scrolls by dispersing 1400 of them around the world on permanent loan from our collection. To those who were entrusted with the scrolls, they are a symbol of hope as well as sorrow. The hope pushed forward an ongoing mission. We believe these Czech scrolls should be reinstituted in Jewish life as a memorial to the vanished communities which once treasured them. The Memorial Scrolls Trust bears witness to the fulfillment of this hope. Let us teach our children about the world of miracles and let us use the scrolls to remind people about what binds them together every day. United Hebrew has one of the “orphan” scrolls. Learn the history of where our scroll came from and how we are proud to have it on loan from The Memorial Scrolls Trust. Register on the UH website. Once you register, a link will be sent to join the program.

Lois Roman is a Trustee of the Memorial Scrolls Trust (MST), and serves as the US Representative based on the East Coast. The Memorial Scrolls Trust is a London based non-profit which oversees the legacy of 1,564 Czech Torah scrolls that survived the Shoah. After a miraculous story of survival, these scrolls arrived in London and were dispersed on permanent loan to caring communities around the world. Lois began her involvement with MST several years ago following a long career on Wall Street as a money manager. She has a degree from Brandeis University and an MBA from Columbia Business School.
