Why Eight Nights?

Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham

Mention Hanukkah and we think of latkes, presents, Ma-Oz Tzur, and Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel. From our pre-school days we

learn that we celebrate Hanukkah for eight nights because of the miracle of the small jug of oil that lasted for eight nights.

As I taught about four years ago, there are at least three additional Midrashim, or folk tales, setting out why we celebrate

for eight nights that I find equally convincing. They are perhaps even more realistic as to why we light the candles and join in

this sacred celebration our rabbis ordained.

Hanukkah may have something to do with Sukkot…The Apocrypha is the often unknown writing that did not “make it into”

the Hebrew Bible. Christians view this book as the prelude to the New Testament. In the Apocrypha, the Second Book of

Maccabees 10:6-8, it states: “And the Maccabees reclaimed the Temple on the 25th day of Kislev. And they celebrated it for

eight days, with gladness, like Sukkot, and recalled how a little while before Sukkot, they had been wandering in the

mountains and living in caves like wild animals [and so unable to celebrate Sukkot]. So, carrying wands wreathed with

leaves and beautiful branches and palm leaves [like a lulav] they offered hymns of praise to God who had brought to pass

the purifying of God’s Temple.”

Perhaps Hanukkah also offered a sense of nationalism and celebration…In the First Book of Maccabees 4:52-56 it states:

“And the Maccabees rose early on the 25th day of the ninth month, which is the month of Kislev, and offered sacrifices

according to the Torah on the new altar that they had made. And they did all this at the time and on the day the

Assyrian-Greeks had polluted the Temple; at that same day it was re-dedicated with harps and lutes and cymbals. And they

celebrated the re-dedication of the Temple for eight days ...” Hence the eight days of Hanukkah.

The weapons of the Greeks actually provided… According to the Midrash of Peskita Rabbati, chapter 2, it says that when

the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest vanquished the Greek Empire, they found eight iron spears that they fashioned into a

candelabra.

Maybe it was the oil after all…And finally, according to the Talmud, Shabbat 21b, our rabbis taught that on the 25th of

Kislev, the days of Hanukkah are eight days on which lamentation for the dead and fasting are prohibited. When the Greeks

entered the Temple, they defiled all the oils. When the Hasmonean dynasty prevailed, they made a search and found only

one cruse with the seal of the High Priest. It contained oil for one day’s lighting. Yet, a miracle was wrought therein and

they lit it (the lamp) for eight days. The following year these days were appointed a festival with the recitation of Hallel and

thanksgiving. We see that Hanukkah is one of two holidays that does not originate from the Torah but (along with Purim) is

rabbinically decreed.

So, I urge you to challenge your family and friends as to why they believe we celebrate Hanukkah for eight nights. I hope

these texts and the myriad of other “eight day explanations” can help to pave the way for an interesting discussion.

Chag Sameach (Happy Hanukkah)! Rabbi Jeffrey Abraham

THE GIFT OF JEWISH FREEDOM IN 5778

HANUKKAH: AN IDENTITY CRISIS? Why is this holiday different from all other holidays in the Jewish year…or, is it? It is ironic that Hanukkah’s commercial significance figures so prominently in the secular world when in fact, in the context of our liturgical cycle, it is among our minor holidays. There are no work prohibitions during Hanukkah, as there are on Shabbat, the High Holidays, or the major festivals of Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot or Sh’mini Atzeret. We do not fast, or afflict our souls, or engage in self reflection as we do on Tisha B’av or on Yom Kippur. In fact, there are very few ritualistic requirements that our tradition asks of us during this commemoration of the religious victory we experienced in the 2nd century BCE, described in our liturgy as a miracle of triumph of the few over the many and the weak over the strong. It is through the communal memory of that “hanukat habayit,” that rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at that time and in that place (“bayamim hahem baz’man hazeh”) that we experience the real theme of the holiday, the affirmation of our right of self-determination in our worship and ritual practices. Historical and rabbinic sources allude to the connection of the celebration of Hanukkah to the Festival of Sukkot. Some accounts suggest that in the midst of the rededication of the Temple—the Jews were not able to make pilgrimage to Jerusalem to celebrate Sukkot during the month of Tishrei because they were engaged in their battle for freedom—Sukkot was simply delayed several months until the 25th of Kislev, and their victory was combined with the weeklong rituals of the missed festival. There are also liturgical similarities between Hanukkah and Sukkot: we find analogous readings from the Torah each day of both holidays; we chant a complete Hallel (Psalms of Praise) during each morning service on both holidays; and both holidays require that the performance of that holiday’s particular mitzvah is done outside the house—the lighting of the Hanukkiah, the holiday’s nine-branched menorah, was traditionally lit in the courtyard outside one’s home, which corresponds with our dwelling in the temporary, outside structure of the Sukkah. The single, unique paragraph that is added to our prayers each and every day of Hanukkah, the text “Al Hanissim” (“For the Miracles”), a jubilant acclamation of thanks and praise, is almost identical to the additional liturgy we find on Purim! Both holidays use the Hebrew term “neis” (“miracle”) when describing the historical events that in each instance ultimately resulted in our religious freedom. Both holidays use the formula of three blessings in the carrying out of the primary mitzvah associated with each of them—the lighting of the Hanukkiah and the reading of the Scroll of Esther—with with the last two blessings for each identical: “…she-asah nissim la’avoteinu, bayamim hahem bazman hazeh,” praising God as the creator of miracles during those days and at that time; and both conclude with the blessing of Shehecheyanu, thanking God for preserving us to be able to celebrate together. There are special foods that we enjoy during Hanukkah, associated with the story of miracle of the purified oil that lasted for eight days. This time of year is especially popular with children, who in many families, especially in the western world, look forward to the greatly exaggerated custom of the giving of gifts (another seasonal topic for another time). It is our ability to thank God for our bounties, to celebrate life together, and to worship freely in the traditions of our ancestors that is the true nature of the holiday of Hanukkah. Actually, when I describe it that way, maybe it sounds more like Thanksgiving! I think Hanukkah is having an identity crisis! Enjoy the holiday!! Chag Urim Sameach! Hazzan Jeremy Lipton

Small Miracles

In a few weeks we will celebrate the Festival of Lights. When we light the Hanukkah menorah each night the burning candles ex-

quisitely brighten our surroundings. The glow of the lights allows us to see the many small miracles that we may have missed that

surround us in our daily lives. The story of Hanukah highlights the miraculous strength the Jewish community can achieve when

working together in the service of God. If we come together and declare our commitment to God, God assists us in overcoming the

most difficult circumstances. In fact, the name “Maccabee” comes from the first letters of the four Hebrew words we recite each

day before shemoneh esrei, Mi kamocha ba’elim Adonai, “Who is like you, Lord, among the mighty.” The Maccabees united the

Jews with their public declaration and battle cry in the service of God. They were then able to overcome the most powerful army

of the era. We publicly display our menorahs for the world to see. The display highlights the very public efforts and battle cry of the

Maccabees to unite the Jews in the collective efforts against the Greeks. These efforts effectively lit the way for the re-

dedication of the Temple and the service of God. As the menorah is lit every year, we are reminded of the public dedication and

sacrifice of the Maccabees, the possibility of miracles for those who engage in divine service, and the everlasting power of a united

community and with Israel.

I feel blessed by the small miracles of life that Charlie and I have certainly been fortunate enough to have. My family, my friends,

the small acts of love and kindness that surrounds my family, the ability to provide for my family, and the well-being to enjoy them

are all on my list.

I invite you to take a deeper look into your surrounding during the upcoming festival of Hanukkah and reflect on the small

miracles each and every one of you are fortunate enough to have every day.

Chag sameach!

Mission Statement

Congregation Agudas Achim is a sacred community committed to the egalitarian

traditions and ideals of Conservative Judaism. We are guided by the principles of

Torah (study), Avodah (meaningful worship), and Gemilut Chasadim (acts of loving

kindness). We strive to connect each generation with the values and principles of

our Jewish past, the moral/ethical demands of the present, and the energy to build

for a Jewish tomorrow.
