Abstract: Concern of increasing energy demand, exhausting fossil fuel reserves and consequences of climate change,

urges us to design energy efficient systems to conserve the existing energy resources. Energy storage is one

of the area where there is a scope to improve the efficiency. One of the devices which can store energy is

flywheel and this has the merits of less maintenance, higher energy density, environmental friendly, longer

life and unlimited charge and discharge cycles. Flywheel energy storage is now considered a viable

technology for stationary applications like UPS, solar and wind power systems particularly when short

time back up is required. This talk covers the discussion on the design methodology of an efficient Flywheel

Energy Storage (FES) system which includes Bidirectional power Converter (BDC), Brushless DC (BLDC)

and a flywheel. The energy extracted from an FESS is limited by various factors like gain of the boost

converter, source resistance of the generator and losses in the system. A brief discussion on these factors

including a method for source-wise apportioning of the losses, techniques of reducing these losses, factors

which influence the extractions of energy harvested will be covered in the talk. A novel scheme of using a

multi-armature winding PM-BLDC generator and a buck converter for the enhancement of the harvested

energy will also be discussed. The presentation also covers the applications of FESS in the Battery less UPS.

Title: Practical challenges in the design of power

electronics devices for plasma cutting applications

Speaker: Dr. Girish Kamath - Hypertherm, Inc., Hanover NH, USA Date: 24 September 2018 Time: 2.30 pm – 3:30 pm Venue: MMCR Dept. of Electrical Engineering, IISc, Bangalore. Abstract:

The speaker has a background in power electronics design and has been designing power supplies for

plasma cutting applications for the past 17 years. Plasma cutting in a nutshell, is a popular technology

that converts gas such as air or oxygen into the plasma state to cut metal. In this two-part talk, the

speaker will begin with an overview of a typical plasma cutting system. The ignition circuit, which is

a usually a Tesla coil based High-Voltage High- Frequency circuit is used to initiate the conversion of

gas to plasma at the beginning of the cut cycle. This circuit arguably makes Plasma cutting unique

among the list of industrial electronics applications. The speaker will present details of a typical gas

ignition circuit and the role it plays in the metal cutting process. The application of this circuit brings

with it certain practical challenges, mainly related to radiated emissions. This will be the subject

matter for the second part of the talk. Here, the speaker will describe briefly the mechanics of radiated

emissions due to its operation. It is seen that cables play an important role in EM noise radiation. To

address this problem, a low-cost diagnostic tool to measure the antenna effects of cables is being

developed. The proposed method is being formulated with a simple test cable case and verified with

its 3D RF physics model. Details of the investigation along with experimental and modeling results

will be presented.

The IEEE STUDENT BRANCH and Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MVJ

college of Engineering in association with IEEE Bangalore Section organized an event “SPEED-O-TRACK”,

on 2nd April. In the Speed O track event the wireless robot is designed to follow a predetermined path.

Sensing a line and maneuvering the robot to stay on course, while constantly correcting wrong moves using

feedback mechanism forms a simple yet effective closed loop system. As a programmer one can get an

opportunity to ‘teach’ the robot how to follow the line thus giving it a human-like property of responding to

stimuli. Participants built a wireless controlled robot capable of following a line on an arena specially

designed for the event. The event was arranged in Double lobby arena of the college.

The participants built an autonomous or wireless controlled robot where a bot followed a black line against

a white background. A maximum of 4 participants and a minimum of 2 participants took part in the

competition which consisted of 3 rounds. Teams started the game by following the black line. The bot taking

the shortest time to complete was qualified to the next round till the end of all 3 rounds. All the bots followed

the rules and regulations mentioned in the rule book for VertechX 8.0. The event ended with declaration of

winners, distribution of participation certificates and cash prize to winners.

Cash prize of Rs.7500, Rs.5000 and Rs.2500 were given to the 1st 2nd and 3rd place winners accordingly.

SWATCHATEYE SEVE CAMPAIGN

IEEE day is a global event to be held on first Tuesday of October, annually. In 2018, this occasion has

beautifully merged with Gandhi Jayanthi. Mahatma Gandhi is considered as the “FATHER OF OUR

NATION”. His principles of non-violence are widely followed throughout the world. His vision of INDIA

as a superpower is remarkable. Our beloved Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi has launched the

“SWACCH BHARATH” campaign in view of attaining this vision. It aims to clean up the streets, roads

and infrastructure of India’s cities, smaller towns and rural areas.

As responsible citizens, it becomes our duty to join hands and bring transformation for such initiatives.

That’s when the idea of “SWACCH VVIET” blossomed. Our campus is designed in a very eco-friendly way.

But it was all messed due to a series of events. So, it was decided to go around and clean the campus in

groups to collect and segregate as much waste as possible.

All the enthusiasts gathered up for a meeting. Each person greeted everyone else present and introduced

themselves in a formal manner.

The plans for the day were:

Divide into groups of 3-4 members

Each group went out in search of waste in different areas in the campus

o Group 1 - Canteen area

o Group 2 - Auditorium area

o Group 3 - Lobby area

o Group 4 – Back stage area

All teams carried out this work and gathered at a place. Each area looked far better than it previously was.

Later on, an activity was conducted.

Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch of engineering and science that includes mechanical engineering,

electrical engineering, computer science, and others. Robotics deals with the design, construction,

operation, and use of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and

information processing. A sensor is an electronic component, module, or subsystem whose purpose is to

detect events or changes in its environment and send the information to other electronics, frequently a

computer processor. A sensor is always used with other electronics, whether as simple as a light or as

complex as a computer. We all know as the world is moving towards a new era of the automation how much

a robot can make a difference in one’s life style.

The students were given a fixed time along with components such as robot chases, motors, IR sensors. They

had to build a line follower robot in given time. First and second prizes were given away.

PART D - GOALS AND PLANS

D.1 Continuation of project/activity in progress and their implementation plans We will build upon the excellent work done by previous committee. Specifically in the areas of Membership Development and Industry focus. Our membership drive is planned to reach the potential members in Industry and Academia. We will conduct major Section events - CONNECT, SmartTech Workshop and WinTech. Bangalore section has successfully conducted events in industry hubs to reach out to potential members. Student travel grant is a new initiative started in 2018. We will continue these initiatives this year as well. D.2 Goals and Future Plans Bangalore section has a strategic long term goal 25 by 25, that is 25000 members by 2025. Bangalore offers a large potential for IEEE membership. For 2019, we have a goal to achieve 10,000 members. As part of Bangalore Section Strategic plan, we have identified the areas to work on to get new members and retain current members. Our plans are to build around these areas and be aligned with the end objective. We have to deliver sufficient value to IEEE members. 1. We plan to conduct high quality technical events on current / new technology topics like AI, Machine Learning, 5G, IoT, Autonomous Vehicle and EV. 2. Provide a platform for Industry and Academia to come together to work on Technology projects 3. Take up one major initiative in Humanitarian Technology that will address a major problem in the larger society D.3 Any innovative ideas to make IEEE more creative and value added for sustaining the membership retention and recruitment goals. Membership retention -

a) Conduct Senior Member Grade elevation (SIMPLE) program to facilitate members to apply for SM grade. This is a very successful program run by Bangalore Section. SMs have a higher retention rate b) Medical Insurance for members. Helps in retention. c) Member discounts for Technical Seminars and Conferences d) Internship opportunities for IEEE student members e) Strengthen the connect between final year students and Working professionals with active collaboration between YP and SAC teams New Members - a) Leverage on member get a member b) Drive events in industry hubs to bring in new members from industry c) Encourage Branch Councilors to run membership drive in their institutions d) Get SMs to promote IEEE in their respective organizations and connect potential members to MD team D.4. Business Plan for Sustainable Growth and Financial Stability. Bangalore Section has a healthy financial status. We will ensure that funds are applied prudently to drive activities and events. Large events will be managed on a break even basis. Accounts are maintained and audited periodically. We have implemented sound accounting practices to track our income and expenses. Our approach for sustainable growth is to focus on membership growth to increase our base and run flagship events with sponsorship to build reserves. We will need some additional funding this year to support two sub sections - Mangalore Sub section and upcoming North Karnataka sub section.
