The POCO is anannual event for leading conference organizers around the world. IEEE organizes this event to share resources andideas with all scientific associations and non-profit conference organizers. POCO convenes thought leaders anddecision-makers to share conference leadership practices, discuss challenges in the conference landscape, envisionthe future, and launch new conference initiatives. The event provides an opportunity to conference organizers tonetwork and share ideas with the full community. POCO2020 in Kuala Lumpur was organized for the second timeafter the successful event in year 2017. This POCO2020 event was supported by IEEE Region 10 Support Grant. The event was joined by more than 100 participants from various places within Asia.

The organizing committee of the POCO 2020 has outlined various renowned speakers from Region 10 as well asfrom local Malaysians. The event started with the officiating remarks by the current Director of IEEE Region 10,Prof Akinori Nishihara. He emphasized on the importance of preserving quality in conference management whichwas also the important element to be reviewed by the Region 10 office. With an objective to serve a large number of end-user, internet connectivity can't be a limitation for this digitalApps. Thus, sayaHadir developed to manage attendancerecord by detecting QR code in the attendees' ID card. Itprocesses the data by producing attendance and absent listsfor data analysis and reporting. This offline feature also offersvarious benefits such as secure, manageable and economicalsince it does not require a web server for its operation. Theuse of this Offline Attendance System has been welcomed bythe school and received positive feedback from the teachers.Hopefully, the expertise can continue to be utilized to thelocal community. Most of the engineering graduates are full of technicalknowledge and skills but lack of presentation andcommunication skills, full of public speaking fear and have noconfidence even in their own achievements which creates agap in the job market for fresh graduates to secure a positionin high demand industries. Till date, there is no suchprogramme available at any engineering college or universitywhich specifically focus on undergraduate (diploma andbachelor) level engineering students to groom their soft skillssuch as avoiding nervousness, vocal effects, body language, presentation, and communication skills. IEEE YoungProfessionals (YP) Malaysia in collaboration with IEEE Powerand Energy Society (PES) Malaysia Chapter and IEEEConsultants Network (CN) Malaysia organised the firstcompetition of its kind in the history of IEEE Malaysia Sectionwhere diploma and bachelor level students from engineeringcolleges and universities from all over Malaysia participated inthe 1st IEEE Five Minutes Final Year Project (5MFYP)Competition 2020 which was held on Friday, November 20,2020. Choosing Engineering As Your Career Sharing Session

A sharing session on engineering for fresher USM was organised by the IEEE USM Student Branch. Students fromother years were also invited to engage in the session to share their campus experience. The freshers wereupdated in the sharing session on what exactly they are going to do for the next 4 years. The speaker also tellsthem about the difficulty they will face and the ways to solve it. During the QA session, participants also allowedany questions to be asked. The participants realise at the end of the sharing session that engineering is going to befun and easy if they practice it in the right way.

IEEE Water, Energy and Food Workshop

Collaboration between IEEE R10 HTC 2020, IEEESarawak Subsection, IEEE Swinburne Student Branch andSwinburne Sarawak: 14-19 December 2020. The projectwas led by Assoc Prof. Dr. Lau Bee Theng, in conjunction with theIEEE R10 HTC 2020 (co-organized by Swinburne Sarawak) andDr. Xavier Chee. We reached out to 45 students through a seriesof coding and electronics boot camps held in Kuching, Sibu andMiri. The workshop was sponsored by the Institute of Electricaland Electronics Engineers (IEEE) US and the IEEE HumanitarianTechnology Committee 2020 to introduce students to thechallenges and future solutions in the Water, Energy and Foodsectors.

Enhancing Humanitarian Engineering within the Vulnerable Communities

Collaboration between IEEE R10 HTC 2020, IEEESarawak Subsection, IEEE Swinburne Student Branch andSwinburne Sarawak: 20 December 2020. The project led byDr. Angelia Liew and Dr. Lau Bee Theng is part of an initiative of aUS$5000 fund awarded by IEEE Humanitarian ActivitiesCommittee Events Fund under the Humanitarian Technology andSustainable Development Project in conjunction with the IEEE R10HTC 2020. The team conducted the activity in a small squattervillage. The 51 households of about 230 villagers including 61children mostly collect their daily drinking water from a standpipe. The aims of the project were to bring basic clean waterknowledge alongside awareness of the Covid-19 pandemic withinvulnerable communities and to encourage our engineeringstudents to contribute to building a more sustainable, stable, andequitable world, to promote creativity and problem-solving skillsto engineer inexpensive solutions for real-world challenges.

Community Empowerment: Promoting Safe and Sustainable Food Production

Collaboration between IEEE R10 HTC 2020, IEEESarawak Subsection, IEEE Swinburne Student Branchand Swinburne Sarawak: 1st – 23rd December 2020. ThisHumanitarian project aimed to boost the local communities’resilience of food supplies through encouraging theestablishment of family gardens with the use of organic compost. This project provided an opportunity for participants to bust themyths surrounding home composting and understand theprovision to perform an informed composting process withmeasurements. Participants realized the compost can be easilyproduced at home with almost zero cost and minimal careneeded in the overall process. The project has delivered apositive note to the local communities on the significance ofwaste management towards a sustainable and cleaner future. Most of the time, food scraps from the kitchen have value to berecycled and relocated for other purposes. Making food wasteinto compost in this project has shown a low-cost butenvironmentally friendly method to continuously feed familygarden or for farming purposes.
