Isolating yourself at home is the best way to stop COVID-19 from spreading, especially to vulnerable community members. Staying home and obeying the rules is the responsible thing to do. Some Amandelbult Times readers share a word of advice.

You can spread the virus without showing any of the usual symptoms. That’s why it’s important to keep your social distance and stay indoors. Thank you to all the essential services employees who are placing their lives on the line for the rest of us. Please take care of yourselves.

3AMANDELBULT TIMES ISSUE 36 NEWS

We are working together with you, our communities, to provide you with as much support as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic, says Natascha Viljoen, acting CEO of Anglo American Platinum.

Anglo American is positioned to make a difference in the regions in which it operates

in this time of global crisis. All of Anglo American’s business units (including Platinum, Coal South Africa, Kumba and De Beers) are engaging with our host community stakeholders, including traditional and faith leaders, and government agencies to develop a comprehensive COVID-19 community response plan, which we will be rolling out across our host communities in the southern African region.

Working with these stakeholders, we are identifying areas where we can provide support that will make the most difference to our host communities, helping to reduce the impact of COVID-19 on those who are the most vulnerable and providing assistance in the areas of healthcare and testing accessibility.

Whatever COVID-19 brings us, Anglo American Platinum will remain unconditional about the safety, health and well-being of its people, in our business and in our communities.

During the national lockdown, we have ramped down much of our business and will be ramping up again as soon as we have been given the go-ahead by government.

As the mining industry plays a critical role in the economy as an employer, taxpayer, buyer of goods and services, and earner of foreign exchange revenue, the minister of Mineral Resources and Energy approached the industry to keep some scaled-back operations going, where health-risk assessments show it is safe to do so.

The recent controlled ramp-down of facilities to achieve a safe state of care and maintenance for the lockdown period affects underground mining operations at Amandelbult, Mototolo, and the Modikwa and Kroondal joint ventures, as well as Mortimer Smelter and Waterval Smelter, which receive concentrate from those operations.

have been scaled back further for the duration of the 21-day lockdown.

Zimbabwe announced a 21-day lockdown from Monday, 30 March, and Unki Mine has been placed on care and maintenance for the duration.

In line with South African government regulations, we assessed the ability to continue some operations on a reduced basis. Mining operations at the open-pit Mogalakwena Mine will continue on a reduced basis and Polokwane Smelter will operate to smelt this material into furnace matte.

We know the vital role our operations play in local communities and remain committed to providing services, including the supply of potable water, healthcare, emergency response assistance and the maintenance of civil infrastructure throughout the lockdown period. We will continue to see how we can further support our communities during this

It is important to say that Anglo American is fully supportive of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s efforts to limit the spread of the virus.

Thank you to every one of you who has been following the rules and procedures. It is only if we work together that we will be

successfully.We will continue to provide

you with regular updates, using all the channels at our disposal. These include regional radio stations, such as Capricorn, North West FM, Thobela FM, Kgatleng FM, Motsweding FM and Madibeng FM. We will also continue to publish our community newspapers, which will be distributed to supermarkets in your area.

Just remember that being a responsible citizen lies

the curve and stopping this virus in its tracks. Follow the president’s instructions when he tells us all to stay at home. When you have to go out, please keep your distance from others.

I encourage all of you to stay safe and cooperate with our law enforcement agencies.

Let’s be individually responsible to collectively remain COVID-19 free.

Remember, clean hands can save lives! MAKE A “TIPPY TAP” FOR HAND WASHINGIf no running water is available, UNICEF has a handy hint for making a “tippy tap” with a clean two-litre plastic bottle and a straw or plastic tube:

About 7 cm from the bottom of the bottle, make a small hole on the side (use a piece of wire heated over a candle).

Push the straw into it.

Fill the bottle with soapy water and close the cap tightly.

Place it on a shelf or hang it from a string.

When you loosen the cap, water will flow out of the straw.

We support the South African government’s steps for limiting the spread of the coronavirus, which include the temporary closure of all South African schools and tertiary institutions. Learners can continue studying at home and complete their curriculum. Learners have free access to the Vodacom Digital Classroom and e-School, covering the national curriculum. Learning and teaching support material includes video-based lessons, digital textbooks, online assessments, course progress tracking and continuous teacher professional development.

THE CORONAVIRUS: STAY SAFE

As the Dikuno Tša Sechaba Community Development Trust, we are committed to realising the vision of “Sustainable and Thriving Communities, Through and Beyond Mining”.

Including livelihood, education, health and poverty relief, the projects, programmes and initiatives we support enable communities to confront their challenges and create a sustainable future for themselves beyond the life of the mine.

Our concern about the safety and well-being of the communities surrounding Platinum’s Amandelbult Complex includes the impact of the CORONAVIRUS (SARS-CoV-2), which is now spreading globally as well as in South Africa, causing an INFECTIOUS DISEASE (COVID-19).

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Cough and sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, and throw the tissue into the trash immediately.

Stay at home from 26 March 2020 during the national lockdown for 21 days, except for essential purposes.

By combining tuberculosis (TB) screening and treatment with its HIV testing and treatment programme, Anglo American Platinum has succeeded in cutting the TB incidence rate by 50% and has also achieved the United Nations 90:90:90 goals.

When 2020 started, we had achieved:STATUS:

97% of Anglo American Platinum employees knew their HIV status at the end of 2019.

TREATMENT:

91% of HIV-positive Anglo American Platinum employees were on anti-retroviral treatment at the end of 2019.

SUPPRESSION:

91% of the HIV-positive Anglo American Platinum employees who were on anti-retroviral treatment at the end of 2019 had achieved viral load suppression.

A company-wide programme to screen HIV-positive employees

for TB and ensure they receive the necessary treatment has seen Platinum drastically reduce the number of employees suffering from TB.

About 1% of South Africans develop TB every year, and more than 70% of these people are also HIV positive. Platinum used its extensive HIV testing and treatment programme to extend screenings and treatment for TB. As a result, the TB incidence rate has halved and far fewer employees have died of TB.

In 2016, Platinum’s TB incidence rate was 660 per

above the South African average.

Thanks to the pro-active management of TB and the roll-out of isoniazid prophylaxis (TB treatment), combined with HIV initiatives, Platinum’s TB incidence rate declined to 328

the South African national average of 567.

Three employees died of TB in 2019, down from 14 in 2016 and 63 in 2013.

achievement.

“At Anglo American Platinum, we’re committed to Zero Harm – an approach that is not limited to safety incidents in the workplace, but also extends to the health and well-being of our employees,” said executive head, technical, Gordon Smith.

“It makes sense to screen and test HIV-positive employees for TB, and to ensure that they receive the necessary medication and support. TB is a curable disease, but patients must keep up with their treatment for it to be cured.”

He concluded: “We’re immensely proud of the work of our medical staff, and of our employees, who have stuck to their treatment regimes. As a result, hundreds of people are now living normal and healthy lives.”

Platinum has more than achieved the UNAIDS 90:90:90 targets!Platinum adopted the UNAIDS 90:90:90 targets in 2016. By 2020, we wanted:• at least 90% of our

employees to know their HIV status;

• at least 90% of HIV-positive employees to be receiving anti-retroviral treatment; and

• at least 90% of our employees on treatment to have undetectable levels of the virus (this is called achieving viral-load suppression).

Dear #LOCKEDIN

True, the president has taken a very drastic step, but with good reason – to protect the lives of the people in South Africa. COVID-19 has killed more than 24,000 people around the world and, when I wrote this, more than half a million people had already been infected. This is serious!

Yes, it does seem that children and young adults often don’t show symptoms when they are infected with the new coronavirus. They may not even know that they’re sick… but they can pass it on to other people! Anyone who gets COVID-19 is likely to give it to at least two more people, if we carry on as normal. You may not get seriously ill from it, but you can give it to someone who may get very sick from it. It’s very dangerous to older people, people with high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, heart problems, TB or HIV/AIDS.

The more people we interact with, the greater the chance that COVID-19 will keep spreading – and at a speed our health services won’t be able to cope with. That’s why we not only need to stay at home, but also to obey the safety instructions put in place, such as avoiding social gatherings.

This is not about you and me, it’s about protecting the lives of millions of people, including your loved ones. Please save 0600 123 456 on your phone and say “Hi” to it on WhatsApp to receive reliable information on COVID-19 that you can share with your friends and family. It might just save someone’s life!

Enjoy your time at home. Spend time thinking and using your imagination. Watch as much TV as you like. Read a story – or write one. Play games on your phone. All the things people used to call you lazy for doing are now good ways to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. I call that a win!

Stay safe.

All my love Rakgadi

Here’s when and how you should wear a mask:• If you’re healthy and you’re not looking after someone with

COVID-19, don’t wear a mask. Someone else needs it more.• Wear a mask if you’ve tested positive for COVID-19, if you’re

coughing or sneezing, or you’re caring for someone who may have or does have COVID-19.

• Get advice from your local healthcare facility about what kind of mask to use, if you need to use one.

• Masks only work if you also keep cleaning your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or with sanitiser that is at least 60% alcohol.

• Before putting on a mask, clean your hands as described above.• Cover your mouth and nose with the mask.• Make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.• Replace the mask with a new one as soon as

it feels damp.

• Don’t reuse masks.• When you take the mask off, don’t touch the front of the mask.

Remove it from behind.• Put the used mask in a closed bin immediately. It must be

disposed of safely, not thrown out with other household refuse. Ask your healthcare provider how to do this.

• Clean your hands immediately, as described above, after you’ve put the mask in the bin.

Dear Rakgadi

The lockdown is killing my social life.

My friends and I had all these plans for the

school holiday and now we’re stuck at home.

I heard only the elderly can get really sick…

I am young, healthy and strong, so why do I

also need to stay at home?

On one of the WhatsApp groups I’m on,

someone posted that if you are young,

chances are you will not show any symptoms

and, if you do, it will only feel like a bad cold.

In my opinion, it sounds like people under the

age of 30 are safe, so why do we also need to

be under quarantine?

And if we have to stay at home, why can’t my

friends come and visit me?

this is a very drastic step to take.

What do you think?

Setswana is a beautiful language. Here are a few useful phrases, translated from English. Happy learning!

MAREO A A BOTLHOKWA KA SETSWANA Setswana ke puo e ntle. Fa ke mareo a le malwa a a dirisiwang, a ronotswe go tswa mo Sekgoweng. Itumelele go ithuta!

USEFUL PHRASES IN SETSWANA

Stay indoors!

There is no need to panic.

Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly.

Cover your mouth and nose with your elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

Never spit in public.

How are you feeling?

My kids are at home with me.

We will get through this.

Keep busy with fun activities at home.

Stay in touch on social media.

Nna mo tlung!

Ga tlhokege gore o tshoge.

Tlhapa diatla tsa gago ka metlha go tseneletse.

Thiba molomu wa gago le nko ka sekgono kgotsa tissue fa o gotlhola kgotsa o ethimola.

Se kgwe mathe mo phatlhalatseng.

O ikutlwa jang?

Banake ba mo gae le nna.

Re tlile go feta se.

Nna o dira o se se itumedisang ko gae.

Nna o le mo dinakong ka mafaratlhatlha a boitapoloso.

Trust your gut feel! If something doesn’t feel right, there’s probably something wrong. Apart from that funny feeling (even when it’s nowhere near time to eat), there are four main ways to spot a scam…

SECRETS If someone asks you for your banking details before you’ve been hired, signed a contract or been given a purchase order, you can be

sure they’re up to no good.

Be wary of anyone who tries to get you to tell them things that should be your secret – like PINs, banking details, or ID details.

Please report anyone who tries to scam you by pretending to represent Anglo American Platinum online at www.yourvoice.angloamerican.com or by phoning 087 232 5426.

CONTACTBe very careful if someone contacts you, especially if you aren’t expecting it. Never give sensitive information

like your banking details or your ID number to anyone who phones you, even if they say they’re from Anglo American or your bank.

If you’re expecting a call, it still pays to be careful.

Rather look up the company’s phone number and call back with your details. Never call back on a number the caller gives you

belongs to the company you think you’re dealing with.

If you receive an email, make sure it follows this format:

[email protected]. If it doesn’t, it’s not

from someone at Anglo American Platinum.

AMAZING!If something seems too good to be true, it probably isn’t true. It’s a scam!

Companies like Anglo American follow strict procedures when they hire people and or buy goods and services.

MONEY!If someone asks you for money to hand in your CV or to include you in a procurement process, you can be sure it’s a

scam. Anglo American never charges a recruitment fee and never asks suppliers for money or samples. Anyone who asks you for money or goods doesn’t work for Anglo American and will not be able to help you get a job or win a tender.
