WATER IS PRECIOUSDear Editor,Your article about the Hall Core Water Project in Mogalakwena Times Issue 4 does not reflect the precise progress of the project. The following villages are reported to have benefited, but we don’t believe that is the case: Sterkwater, Mosoge, Kwakwalata, Mabuela, Ramorulana, Phafola (Molokomme), Phafola (Maloka), Fothane, Lekiting, Mashahleng, Danisani, Mamaala/ Parakis, Magope, Sandsloot (Masenya), and Ga-Chaba. Mapela Task Team

Dear Task Team,We welcome your query and appreciate your interest in this important project. The mandate of Hall Core, as a stakeholder involved in the Mapela Hall Core Water Project, is to increase the water supply capacity by equipping and maintaining boreholes.

This does not mean that a new borehole will be drilled in each village. It means that, in most instances, existing unused water reticulation and storage infrastructure are and connected to a new source to improve water supply.

The following villages were connected to a water source on the dates indicated: • Sterkwater Phase

A; Lekiting Phase A; Mashahleng Phase A; and Danisani Phase A: October 2018.

• Phafola (Molokomme) Phase C; and Phafola (Maloka) Phase C: December 2018.

• Sandsloot (Masenya) Phase A: March 2019.

• Mosoge Phase C; Kwakwalata Phase C; Mabuela Phase C; and Ramorulana Phase C: May 2019.

• Fothane Phase A; Mamaala/ Parakis Phase A; Magope Phase A; and Ga-Chaba Phase C: July 2019.

The article indicates that water is being supplied to the villages mentioned, but the project is still rolling out and it is important to bear in mind that some of the newer extensions still require better coverage in terms of supply.

This project’s main aim is to provide access to water. Once it has been rolled out, more than 70,000 people will benefit from it. Your continued support is appreciated in this very important project that lies at the heart of Mapela’s sustainable development. The Editorial Team

Sekuruwe clinic, which Limpopo Member of the Executive Council (MEC)

for health Dr Phophi Ramathuba officially opened on 5 August 2019, gives six Mogalakwena Complex host communities easy access to health care.

“We’re overjoyed to see Sekuruwe Clinic, which forms part of our social and labour plan (SLP), opened officially,” said Platinum head of government and stakeholder relations Constance Mosena. “Platinum partnered with the Limpopo Department of Health to bring accessible health care to the communities of Sekuruwe, Millennium, Rauwele, Ga-Molekana, Ga-Puka and Ga-Sekhaolelo.”

Mosena explained that Platinum funded the construction of the clinic and handed it over to the Department of Health to be equipped and staffed in December 2017. The scope of work included the about 608m² clinic building and the about 450m² onsite staff accommodation.

The clinic has maternity facilities and will eventually provide a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week service.

A total of 24 general workers from Sekuruwe, ten of them semi-skilled, were employed while the project was being completed.

“We encourage partnerships with stakeholders in the areas where we have operations. At Platinum, we realise that it

Dr Ramathuba agreed that stakeholders need to work together and thanked the community for their patience in waiting for the Department of Health to secure the equipment and staff necessary to provide a functional clinic. “We all know what needs to be done! We need positive attitudes and a push in the same direction to move forward. I assure you, we are working on getting the clinic functioning 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

“It takes all of us working together to create proper health care infrastructure.”

Starting a business is always daunting, but COENG director

and board chairperson Rain Mudadi knows from experience that a combination of determination and skill spells success.

Ten years ago, this internationally accredited multi-disciplinary engineering and design company was started by two engineers. Today, they are playing in the big league, with clients such as Anglo American Platinum, Unilever and Sasol.

During a workshop presented by COENG in collaboration with Platinum, Mudadi shared the following tips for running a successful business:• Empower your employees, because they play a key role in the success of your business. Communicate openly and provide them with opportunities to develop their skills and grow with the company. It’s crucial.

• Let go of full control. Appoint people to take responsibility for the tasks at which you don’t excel. • Set up systems. Become a business owner who leads, not manages, his team. When systems are in place, employees know exactly how you like to run your business.• De-clutter your business. Let go of anything that’s not helping your business to be happier, healthier and a more productive place to be. Whether it’s a client or an employee draining company resources, let it go. This will help you to become more efficient in life and in business.• Stay organised and disciplined.• Don’t lose sight of the bigger picture. Make sure you don’t spend so much time working in the business that you don’t have time to spend working on the business. • Develop your skills, spend time networking with other business leaders

and entrepreneurs, attend professional development events and training, and hold workshops with your teams.• Hire for attitude and train for skill. An employee with a bad attitude won’t benefit your company, no matter how skilled they are.• Create a standard operating procedure and stick to it. • Establish a culture of transparency in your business.

Business success depends on how you run your business. COENG director and board chairperson Rain Mudadi offers some tips.

“The importance of small, medium and micro-enterprises in the South African economy can’t be overemphasised. You create both social and economic stability, which are key focus areas for policymakers.”

COENG DIRECTOR AND BOARD CHAIRPERSON RAIN MUDADI

RUN A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS• Create and use a budget. Let it act as a guide to help your business grow.• Always re-evaluate. Evaluate your business progress at least every three months.• Hire a good business accountant.• Set goals and stick to them. Define how you’re going to achieve your goals.• Take advantage of technology.

dozers and dump trucks.Once qualified, they can apply

for a position as an operator in the mining industry. This combats unemployment, which is one of the biggest challenges facing our country.

“We are creating real value by helping our learners to become skilled, motivated and productive workers who contribute to positive change, not only at work but also at home and in their communities,” said human resource coordinator, people development, Mervin Thomson.

FUTURE WORKFORCEDO YOU QUALIFY?Would you like to gain experience in a real mining role? Applications are open to the people of Mapela. You need:• Grade 12 English;• Grade 12 mathematics;• A valid driver’s license. LET’S WALK THE TALK!We can help our young people to rise and become the best version of themselves if we lead by example.

Children are much more likely to do what we do than to do what we tell them

to do. They learn a sound work ethic and commitment from the behaviour of the adults around them.

The value of commitment and hard work can’t be overemphasised. If our children watch us wake up early every day, get ready for work and leave on time, that’s what they’ll do one day.

Apart from what they learn from watching what we do, we also need to encourage them and remind them to behave in a way that will help them to succeed in life. With the final school exams around the corner, we need to be adamant about our children attending school every single day. They need to learn to be conscientious and responsibile while they’re young.

Nothing worthwhile comes easily and there is no short cut to success, so we need to show our children the value of accountability and responsibility. They need to know the value of honest, hard work, done with integrity. They need to realise that it’s a harsh world out there and know that they will

have to persevere, even in very challenging circumstances. We need to encourage them not to take the easy way out, but to persist in doing the right thing, even if everyone else seems to be doing the opposite.

Education opens up the road to a better life. No threat or trend should prevent them from going to school. The learner who attends school every day, works with dedication and puts in extra effort, is the adult who will excel one day.

Teach your children to be leaders who influence others to make the right choice, rather than following the “cool kids” who may lead them onto the wrong path.

Bob Beauprez said: “Education is a shared commitment between dedicated teachers, motivated students and enthusiastic parents with

high expectations.” It’s very true! We can’t expect our children to do it alone. They need the right support!

The power of words, communication and education is stronger than any weapon. Let’s empower our youth and help them to build a better future, not only for themselves, but for all of us. Let’s promote education!

SKILLING THE YOUTHLearners with technical interests and talents now have the ideal place of learning to pursue their dreams. Anglo American Platinum has invested heavily in Phalandingoe Technical High School in Mashahleng. Its upgraded facilities were handed over to the Limpopo Department of Education on 27 August.

“We're excited about how this will open up future possibilities and proud to represent Phalandingoe Technical High School.”

From left: Kgoshi Hans Masebe Langa II, Platinum CEO Chris Griffith; Limpopo education MEC Polly Boshielo; Mogalakwena Municipality acting mayor Councillor Malesela Mokwele; and school principal Kwena Mothapo.

Platinum invested nearly R7 million as part of its schools project to renovate

classrooms, upgrade the administration block, establish technical workshops, refurbish science laboratories, build a new kitchen and dining area and upgrade Phaladingoe Technical High School.

The facilities were unveiled at a ceremony attended by the Limpopo member of the executive council (MEC) for education Polly Boshielo; Platinum chief executive officer (CEO) Chris Griffith; Department of Minerals and Energy regional manager, mineral regulation, Azwihangwisi Mulaudzi; and other dignitaries.

A key focus area of Platinum’s schools project is to improve learners’ mathematics, science, technology (MST) and English skills. In addition, the technical workshops cater for vocational training in plumbing and civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.

The project includes learner and educator development, the training of school management, and the refurbishment and upgrading of school infrastructure. Platinum also provides operational support, including mentoring, career guidance and the support of academic achievements, as well as bursaries and a

learnership programme that gives participants exposure to the working environment.

The aim is to ensure that learners are equipped with the skills and education to gain employment opportunities, including at the company’s operations in their local communities.

The project includes three technical high schools near Platinum’s operations in Limpopo: Mogale-wa-Bagale Technical High School, near Twickenham Project outside Burgersfort; Phaladingoe Technical High School, near Mogalakwena Complex outside Mokopane; and Thekganang Technical School, near Amandelbult Complex outside Thabazimbi.

Since the project started, the average Grade 12 pass rate at the three schools has increased from 61.9% in 2015 to 93.2% in 2018. Washington Mapingure, who matriculated from Thekganang Technical School last year, achieved the highest

mark for electrical technology in Limpopo

in the final exams. “The Anglo

helping learners to meet the basic requirements for building a successful technical career,” said Griffith. “The improvement in the matric pass rate at the three technical high schools we have partnered with demonstrates the power of collaboration in addressing some of South Africa’s biggest challenges.”

Boshielo added: “The department has committed itself to the eradication of all inappropriate school infrastructure across the province. We believe in working with the private sector. The demand for school infrastructure can be met and we are always open to participation by the business community in our endeavour to provide infrastructure that advances proper teaching and learning. We appreciate and applaud what Anglo American has done and we urge others to emulate them.”

“Phaladingoe Technical High School have been the top school in the Mapela Education Circuit for the past four years. We hope to see a 100% pass rate soon!”

Being singled out as the top school in the Mapela education circuit for

the last four years is a real accomplishment! Phaladingoe Technical High School principal, Kwena Mothapo attributes this achievement to the implementation of Platinum’s school project and excellent teamwork.

Platinum and Phaladingoe Technical High School have been in a partnership since 2015, with the aim of improving the quality of education at the school and addressing the skills shortage in mathematics, science and technology (MST) skills-based industries like mining and engineering.

The resulting improvement in their MST skills has enabled several learners to benefit from bursaries as well as the Platinum absorption learnership model.

RAKGADI ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS

An impressive second place in the recent Masters World Cup Tournament

rewarded the gutsy performance of the Vhakegula, Vhakegula (granny, granny in Tsonga) soccer team, who represented South Africa.

Three members of this skilled team – Elizabeth Mboyane (58), Helen Mokebe (80) and Jade Langa (59) – are from Skimming.

In June, the team won a friendly match against its counterparts in France as part of a Fifa Women's World Cup tour.

The team of grannies was started in 2003 by Rebecca Ntsanwisi, a social worker in Limpopo who saw the need for a therapeutic release for elderly woman.

The team has shown their community clearly that a healthy lifestyle pays off and you are never too old to start being active and realising your dreams.

Mboyane, Mokebe and Langa also make a real difference in their community by giving sewing, drama and beadwork lessons to young people.

To raise money for their participation in sporting events, they sell their arts and crafts and the clothing they make.

Taboos shatter every time three Skimming grandmothers lace up their soccer boots. Now they’ve even competed internationally!

BREAKING BARRIERS… Bringing skill and experience to the Vhakegula, Vhakegula soccer team are its local members, from left: Elizabeth Mboyane (58); Helen Mokebe (80) and Jade Langa (59). By taking up soccer, they have become great ambassadors for a healthy lifestyle.

LEADING BY EXAMPLE… Mokebe; Mboyane and Langa also empower the youth by teaching them to sew, do beadwork and even act.

“We can all learn from these remarkable women! They’re breaking barriers and making contribution to a better and more sustainable future for all.” MOGALAKWENA COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER, OPERATIONS, TARRYN GENIS

GRANNIES WITH GO!

Dear Rakgadi,I really, really need your advice! I am

17 and in Grade 10. I think I should just leave school! I am already repeating grade 10 because things are tough at home. Money is always an issue and my mother,

a single parent, is working long hours to provide for us.

When I get home from school, I help by looking after three younger brothers and a

sister. I cook and clean to help my mom. Often, we do not have money for electricity and I have to

do my homework by candlelight. I am just so tired of getting into trouble for incomplete

homework. I am tired of getting bad marks for tests because I couldn't study. Won't it just be easier to drop out of school and help my mother at home?

Regards, #FED-UP

Dear #FED-UPYour letter really touched my heart! Just by the way you

are expressing yourself, I can tell that you definitely have the ability to finish Grade 12. Don't give up! You know by now that education is the only way to improve your future, so you should not even consider dropping out of school.

Please email your 'Ask Rakgadi' question to [email protected].

Rakgadi is here to answer all your questions and clarify your quandaries about living your best life! Just like a favourite aunt, she gives practical advice on various issues, reminding us about the things that should take priority in life, like healthy relationships, our mental and physical health and finding joy in everyday things. Anyone who gets in touch with her will remain anonymous.

LET’S TRY TO FIND SOME PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS.Could you maybe ask your granny or an aunt to come and stay with you to help with your siblings during exam times? Consider finding out if any of the hostels at schools in your area make provision for free lodging in cases of merit, like yours. Or perhaps there is a study centre nearby, like the Aletuke Drop-In Centre in Moshate, which provides a safe space where you can finish your homework before heading home?

If you commit and work hard to improve your marks, you can even apply for a scholarship at companies like Anglo American Platinum. However, bursary opportunities like these are only open to you if you stay at school and work hard (in some cases, they require a 65% pass rate for science and mathematics). REMEMBER, YOUR CHOICES DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE! Take some practical steps like these, take heart, and persevere to finish school. Grade 12 is the minimum requirement to open other doors to your future. Completing your education is not a selfish decision. It is in the best interest of your family too. If you are able to access a bursary or find a job, you can help your mother and other siblings to succeed too.

I know it feels very tough right now, with grit and determination, you can succeed and change the future, not ony for your, but for your entire family. I believe in you!Kind regards, Rakgadi
