Looking for work is tough. After weeks of no success, a fraudster might look like your saving grace, a sign that your search is finally over. Watch out! Don’t trust anyone who offers you a job or promises an interview, in exchange for anything.

Tshepisho Tshabile, educator at the Department of Education, Rustenburg

A conman once tried his tricks on me. Luckily my aunt warned me beforehand. Our community identified him as a fraudster and he had to leave.

Dithapelo Mradu, general worker at Platinum’s Waterval Smelter

Never comply when a fraudster asks you for cash or sexual favours in return for an interview or employment opportunity. This will never be real! Also remember, if an offer sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Margaret Mkhabela, administrative assistant at Mfidikwe Primary School, Rustenburg

If the employment opportunity is genuine, the company won’t require you to pay cash up front for anything. If someone tries to scam you, contact the company in question and the police immediately.

Nkosinathi Mbundlwa, educator at Mfidikwe Primary School, Rustenburg

If you think you are in the claws of a fraudster, ask for a reference or talk directly to people at the company he supposedly represents. If it turns out to be a scam, report the person to the police and spread the word to warn your friends, family and community.

Yolandé Fourie, metallurgical technical engineer at Platinum’s Anglo Converter Plant

If someone tries to con you, play them at their own game. Get the police to help you, so that they can arrest the fraudster red-handed.

Tshegofatso Diale, educator at the Department of Education, Rustenburg WHAT DO YOU

HAVE TO SAY?

CATCH FRAUDSTERS OUT! Desperate times call for desperate measures, but

that doesn’t include falling for fraudsters’ tricks! I have been the victim of a hoax; be careful!

Letlhogonolo Dinake, administrator at Tshukudu Secondary School, Rustenburg

If someone asks you to give them money to apply for a job or to participate in a tender, they do NOT represent Anglo American Platinum. Platinum never, ever asks for upfront deposits, application fees or fees to access tender documents. If you receive an email that looks suspicious or you would like to know more, please contact [email protected].

Fraud comes in all shapes and sizes. If you think you are about to step into a trap, ask for help.

If it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam. Christo Kruger, workshop manager at Revco Motors, Rustenburg

Employment opportunities are scarce. Fraudsters make a living off people who fall for their tricks.

They steal money from the poorest of the poor, those desperate enough to try anything to get a job. Donovan Schonfeldt, tow truck driver at Pro Auto Towing, Rustenburg

Scamsters look as smart as they look real. They can even produce documents that look very

convincing. Just remember that no company will ever ask that you pay cash up front for anything. If you come across a scamster, report him or her directly to the company and to the police. Dikeledi Molokoane, housing administrator at Platinum’s process division services

Fraud of any kind, especially when it happens under our name, goes against what we stand for as a company. Together with the communities in which

we operate, we are building a future for ourselves and our children. I urge anyone who has been approached fraudulently regarding employment or

the procurement of goods and services to report it to us.Ted Muhajir, head of social performance at Anglo American Platinum

HELP US BEAT THE FRAUDSTERS! Fraudsters are prowling, pretending to represent Anglo American Platinum while trying to get personal information, goods or money from job seekers and service providers.

Don’t fall for fraudsters’ tricks, even if they are very convincing and look official. Beware if someone asks you to participate in a tender process, makes you a job offer or is running a jobs lottery. They are out to steal your money!

STOP SCAMMERS Fraudsters usually make use of requests for quotations (RFQs) or a promise of employment to lure victims. They disguise themselves as a person or organisation that you would trust and use familiar electronic communication channels like email, SMS or WhatsApp.

If they are phishing, they are out to get sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, as well as money.

The criminals who make false job offers often ask for money for the recruitment process. Unsuspecting job seekers are sometimes asked for their banking details or

asked to pay a fee for company clothing.

Platinum does not ask for money from potential employees and will never ask job seekers for their banking details before making them a job offer in writing and employing them. Only once a person has been officially employed do we ask for their account information so that we can pay their salary into their bank account.

SPOT FAKE MESSAGES An email, SMS or WhatsApp message may look convincing, but you will know it’s fake if it has any of the following features: • You are asked for money. We

will never ask for upfront deposits, security deposits or fees for accessing tender documentation.

• You need to provide your banking details to participate in an RFQ process or before you are made a job offer.

We capture and verify our suppliers’ banking details when we register them as suppliers. We will not do this on an RFQ. We also never ask jobseekers for their banking details before we have employed them.

• You are asked for samples or goods upfront.

• If the email address doesn't follow this format: [email protected].

• You receive the email out of the blue. We offer jobs only after following a formal application and selection process, including face-to-face interviews.

• If you receive a quotation request even if you haven’t done any work for Anglo American in the past. Our normal process is to contact prospective suppliers to let them know about an opportunity and we typically conduct a site briefing to discuss our requirements.

HERE’S HOW TO BE SURE

4 OCTOBER 2018 RUSTENBURG TIMESSUPPLIER DEVELOPMENT

BUILDING SUSTAINABLE CAPACITY Local suppliers from Rustenburg operations’ host communities flocked to Waterval Smelter’s lapa on 24 August to find out more about the revised Zimele supplier development programme.

The new features of the Zimele programme, including mentoring and

coaching, received an excited response from the local suppliers who engaged with Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Multi-Purpose Hub representatives.

Hub manager Don Pitsoe said the Anglo American Zimele programme previously focused on providing funding. “We realised that, to make this funding model sustainable, we need to provide business development support to help companies grow. A business advisor will advise, support, and motivate entrepreneurs on their business growth journey.”

Hub programme implementation manager Kehumile Mogwera added: “We not only presented the new Zimele programme to suppliers, but also listened for feedback so that we can revise the programme to suit their needs, if necessary.”

Representatives of Platinum’s partners, TechnoServe and Absa, also

attended the training session. The Zimele supplier

development programme is right for you, if you are a small or medium-sized business owner who wants to improve, grow or diversify your business. If selected, you will be part of a group of six to 12 business owners from your community. In total over the period of four years, 96 companies will be developed through the supplier development programme.

After the official Zimele supplier programme launch, each intake of suppliers will benefit from about nine months’ training. The first three months will deal with business and financial management and technical topics.

DEVELOPING SKILLS… Business development director of 3E Control and Instrumentation Theko Letsie enjoyed engaging with hub programme implementation manager Kehumile Mogwera.

JOINING HANDS… Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Multi-Purpose Hub is joining hands with host communities.

ON THE SAME PAGE… Hub programme implementation manager Kehumile Mogwera presented the new Zimele supplier development programme.

THE REVISED PROGRAMME INCLUDES:• Training in business development and finance;• Learning from other business owners;• Developing a growth plan;• Linking entrepreneurs to market opportunities; and • Joining supplier roundtables.

To be eligible for the programme, businesses need to be:• >51% black-owned; • A mine community zone of influence supplier; • Ethical, with good governance in place; • Committed to the programme; and • Able to match business supply chain opportunities.

An independent panel will review each application to create a shortlist, considering Wave priorities. These will include the size of the business, opportunities for job creation, availability for site inspection and interviews, and whether all documentation has been submitted.

SUPPORTING SUPPLIERS… Hub manager Don Pitsoe explained the revised Zimele supplier programme.

ELEVATING DIGNITY A R20 million sanitation project which would improve the health, safety and dignity of community members, was announced by the Rustenburg Community Development Trust (RCDT) on 28 August in Mfidikwe village.

READY TO ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVES… From left: co-director of Wethu Umzanzi JV Hashley Setshedi; RCDT’s chairperson Nthabiseng Matsobane; and social performance manager at Platinum’s Rustenburg operations, Thabo Sibiya, collaborated for the better of the Mfidikwe community.

BRINGING CHANGE TO MFIDIKWE… Community stakeholders, councillors, traditional leaders, Royal Bafokeng Administration and Anglo American Platinum representatives, converged at the Mfidikwe construction site.

In the not-too-distant future, the community of Mfidikwe will soon get rid of unhygienic

pit latrines that will be replaced with a proper sewer system.

The current latrines are a source of discomfort and danger to young children.

The RCDT, a body funded by Anglo American Platinum, handed the project to contractor Wethu Umzanzi JV at a briefing attended by key stakeholders representing the community, Royal Bafokeng Administration, local councillors and the local traditional authority.

Co-director of Wethu Umzanzi JV, Nathaniel Maponyane, said the R20 million sanitation project heralds a very important aspect of environmental and health

transformation to the Mfidikwe community and that this was one of the burning issues of development in rural areas of the North West province.

Nathaniel highlighted the significance of the sanitation project: “This project will ensure that communities really get what they deserve. It will create part-time employment and in the long term, it will open opportunities for local plumbers as they would have to provide maintenance services on the project. We are going to use local sub-contractors and will employ local labour. The procurement of basic items such as diesel and sundries for contractors will also be derived from locals.”

Echoing the sentiment, co-director of Wethu Umzanzi JV Hashley Setshedi said the project would benefit the entire Mfidikwe community and that it would create part-time jobs for locals. RCDT operations manager Katleho Thinane, said work on the sewer is expected to start as soon as all preliminary work, including site establishment and training, is complete.

Social performance manager at Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg operations, Thabo Sibiya, said: “We are fortunate to take hands with RCDT and Mfidikwe. Our contribution to the sanitation project will give the community members the dignity they deserve and will leave a lasting positive legacy.”

READY TO RUMBLE… It is all systems go for the Mfidikwe sanitation project after the official announcement of the project by RCDT.

PLATINUM’S PUBLICATIONS SHINE

EXCELLENCE REWARDED… Hard work brought the awards rolling in for, from left: Platinum Publishers managing director Len Lombard; Platinum Publishers director Matebesi Mohube; and Platinum Publishers editor Myrtle Brough.

A brilliant performance at this year’s South African Publication Forum awards ceremony, achieved despite stiff competition, was the reward for all the hard work that goes into producing Anglo American Platinum’s publications.

Competing against about 150 entries, Platinum’s publications more than held

their own, with Mogalakwena Times winning the trophy for Best Newspaper. It, as well as Rustenburg Times, Amandelbult Times, and Twickenham Times, achieved 75% or more for communication, writing and design. All four newspapers were also finalists in several categories.

It therefore came as no surprise when Platinum’s community communication manager, Roslyn Jones, was awarded the prestigious Editor of the Year trophy.

One of the judges remarked: “I am endlessly impressed by the effort that goes into compiling these newspapers. The varied topics address a wide range of community issues. Translating it all is proof of the

company’s commitment to clear communication with its communities.”

The publications’ great performance was made possible by the tremendous teamwork between Platinum’s communication and social performance teams and their suppliers, as well as the constant support of the operations’ general managers and executive committees.

SORTING WASTE… RBMR donated colourful sorting waste bins to the school.

ART FROM RECYCLED MATERIAL… Susan Vilanculos (13) pipped two other learners and come first in the Waste to Wonderful art competition. With her is Mfidikwe Primary School teacher Mmabasadi Petlele; and RBMR’s GM Fortune Mashimbye.

The Waste to Wonderful competition was open to all schools in Anglo American Platinum’s host communities. Participating Platinum operations each selected three winners from their entries and then submitted their winning entries to take part in the finals held at Platinum’s head office in Johannesburg.

We are on a road to significance, becoming the change we want to see in the world.

A t Anglo American Platinum, we have agreed to become part of something more

important than ourselves; we are making a positive difference in the lives of others.

We do this on many levels, at home and at work. Not forgetting about our past, lest we fail to learn from our mistakes, we focus on the future together.

Another way we can avoid mistakes is to be wary when people make us offers that seem too good to be true. Fraudsters are prowling, pretending to represent Platinum while trying to get personal information, goods or money from

job seekers and service providers. Please help us to beat them! Don’t fall for their tricks, even if they are very convincing and look official.

On a lighter note, the awareness of the need to reduce, reuse and recycle that participants in Platinum’s Waste to Wonderful art competition showed is proof that we are making progress in our Zero Waste to Landfill by 2020 target.

The judges had a difficult task selecting winners from the splendid entries from across Platinum’s host communities. Our very own Platinum Primary School from Precious Metals Refinery’s host community took second place!

Congratulations to learners Kadi Gosego and Melissa Msindwana, who transformed waste into a miniature corner shop, complete with a garden and outside seating.

As the year-end draws closer, trips other than our corporate journeys are also on our minds. Please make safety a priority as you and your loved ones travel. Be safe on the roads!

And let’s not forget that we never travel alone. We have friends, colleagues, and community and family members on the road with us. It’s up to us to make a positive difference in their lives. Play your part!

PAYING IT FORWARD

Nine operations took part, including Precious Metals Refinery (PMR);

Rustenburg Base Metals Refiners (RBMR); Amandelbult Complex; Twickenham Project; Mototolo Concentrator; Mortimer Smelter; Mogalakwena Complex; Polokwane Smelter and Unki Mines in Zimibabwe. Eight of the participating school’s excited winners and runners up have been to Platinum’s corporate office in Johannesburg to collect their prizes.

Says doctor Hermanus Prinsloo, lead environment of Platinum: “The aim of the competition was to challenge the youth’s perceptions of recycled material; to draw attention to the amount of waste we produce; to raise awareness about the responsible use of resources, and to make a positive change through creative expression.”

Each of the finalists was rewarded with stationery sponsored by Platinum, a Kreamfields lunch bag and backpack, and a water bottle from Interwaste.

The competition forms a valuable part of Platinum’s long-term waste strategy. Says Platinum chief executive Chris Griffith: “To achieve our Zero Waste to Landfill by 2020 target,

FROM PAGE 6

we are building partnerships with our communities to develop recycling programmes.” As part of the build-up to the competition finals, operations visited participating schools in their communities to encourage the budding artists and to create further awareness about waste management.

At Mfidikwe Primary School, RBMR’s general manager Fortune Mashimbye spoke about how the fight against plastic pollution is a global objective. “In line with this year’s World Environment Day theme of ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, we all need to reduce our plastic usage.”

RBMR environmental coordinator Boipuso Semenya

said that the aim of the competition was to challenge people’s perceptions of waste, to draw attention to the amount of waste people produce and about the responsible use of resources.

PMR senior management visited Platinum Primary School, who came second overall, to view the learners’

competition entries before the competition finals. Said PMR general manager Agit Singh: These wonderful works of art are inspirational and they show commitment to waste management.”

Environmental coordinator Nongaka Khaas said: “All the entries displayed an incredible amount of thought and effort.”

“Whatever age, colour and gender you are, you can still get breast cancer. It also doesn’t matter what size breasts you have. The key thing is to have regular check-ups. The earlier you discover it, the better your chances are of beating it.”

“If we all work together to raise awareness about the different kinds of cancer, then maybe more people will get help sooner.”

What?! Breast cancer! I’m so sorry Lesedi, are you going to be okay?

Thandi, do you mind if we meet a little later for coffee? I have to get to the clinic.

I just can’t believe it! I thought I was too young to get breast cancer.

Knowing as much as you can about cancer is very important. That’s why I’m growing a moustache for Movember. I’m raising

awareness about cancers that affect men, such as testicular and prostate cancer, which is something us men don’t like to discuss.

Thank goodness! I must be more aware of doing my own checks too.

The nurse is hopeful because I found the lump very early.

Thank you for your support guys! It’s not just those who have cancer who need to be aware, but also their friends and colleagues, to know

how they can be there for them.

The good news Lesedi is that we found the breast cancer early. You were very smart to do self checks

at home; otherwise you may not have found the lump. Now we can start the treatment immediately.

No, of course that’s fi ne. Are you okay?

I hope so. I’ll tell you about it later.
