“Indeed, I received many com-plaints from victims of those devils(brokers—Ed) every year. Some resi-dents admitted to have deposited someamount of money, but did not qualifyfor the recruitment. Meanwhile, the number of appli-cants in Klungkung this year decreasedfrom 6,508 people struggling for 641vacancies. Head of Klungkung HumanResources (BKD), Nengah Sudiartha, estimated the decrease in the numberof applicants was caused by the reduc-ing quota in the Klungkung Regency.“Probably, the applicants may seek thegreater opportunity,” he said.

Sudiarta said, the allocated num-ber of civil servant prospect givenby the central government was basedon the proposed need by KlungkungRegency namely 881 people. NATURE is so kind to itsdwellers, namely plants, animaland human. It has provided allthings or sustenance required forthe survival around the clock. Allrequire the presence of one an-other. However, human being isthe most determining elementsamong the three because he is theonly creature bestowed with thecapability of thinking.

One of the basic principles inHinduism is the belief in the soul. All creatures are brought to life byvital energy or soul (atman). It rep-resents the fragment of God (Brah-man). Since material body bondsthem, they could not identify theirpure self. Human being endowedwith power, words and mind hasdominant role in maintaining the re-lations. He considers God dwells in-side all creatures. On that account,he respects them all as equal cre-ation.

Animal particularly cattle, for in-stance, has helped human being inliving their life. Cow has providedhim with the power to plough hissoil in the rice field or garden, milkfor children and adult, and its dungfor fertilizing the soil. Meanwhile, other cattle give human some eggsor fleshes.

On that day, the Hin-dus in Bali will celebrate it by pre-senting some oblations showing adeep gratitude for being given withthe energy assistance, healthy drinkor delicious food. The same respectis given to cultivated plants that arehonored through Tumpek Pengatagor Bubuh (Saturday Kliwon Wariga)and human itself has birthday(otonan) celebrated once in 210 dayson the same day as his birth, notbirthdate (on the same date). Fromthe morning, girls or householdmothers will be busy preparing ev-erything for the ritual. It would be agreat chance if you could see theBalinese perform the procession.

Since human being has a mind, there is an opportunity for him to getreunion with God because he canthink and learn about God. This de-notes another belief of Hinduism, namely moksha. Meanwhile, animaland plant do not have this opportu-nity. However, human being canprovide help for this purpose in or-der the soul of animal and plant canreach higher level in their next life.

Dharma Caruban manuscript de-scribes the correct way to slaughteranimals and to take plants for the useof rituals. Before slaughtering them, they are given particular mantra in

the hope they could reach higherlevel of life in the next reincarna-tion. This treatment is equally givento any plants, fish (ekapada), fowl(dwipada) and four-legged animals(catur pada).

Regarding to this human-animalrelation, there is another manuscript, namely Darmaning Pemaculan orShri Tattwa, describing about spiri-tual farming-related activities, rang-ing from how to build different sizesof dam, land cultivation and plant’sdisease eradication to rituals held ineach phase of the activity. In han-dling plant’s disease, local farmersremain to say prayers in order Godor His manifestation keeps the ani-mal properly, not disturb the plants. As the compensation for the ani-mals, devotees will present properfood (lelabaan). Otherwise, thefarmers will set up trap or naturalpoison.

When getting in touch with hu-man life, all animals are treatedas God’s creation and communi-cation maintained. Human offersthanksgiving oblation for the helpextended; invocation for betterlife when animals are in use forrituals ingredients; acknowledg-ment and repressive action toplant diseases if they attack hu-man plants. In short, he remainsto give proper treatment as equalGod’s creation. (BTN/punia)

SEOUL, South Korea – SouthKorea’s president on Monday tookresponsibility for failing to protecthis citizens from a deadly NorthKorean artillery attack last week, vowing tough consequences for anyfuture aggression and expressingoutrage over the “ruthlessness of theNorth Korean regime.”

Lee Myung-bak’s short speech tothe country came as a nuclear-pow-ered U.S. supercarrier and a SouthKorean destroyer participated in jointmilitary exercises, a united show offorce nearly a week after an artillerybarrage on Yeonpyeong island killedfour, including two civilians.

A South Korean county designatedthe front-line island Monday as “off-limits” to civilians. The decision couldpave the way for the evacuation ofabout 300 remaining residents, jour-nalists and officials. South Korea’sDefense Ministry said it would dis-cuss whether to evacuate.

Amid the heightened tension, classified U.S. State Departmentdocuments leaked Sunday by onlinewhistle-blower WikiLeaks showedthe United States and South Koreadiscussing possible scenarios for re-unification of the peninsula, andAmerican worry over Pyongyang’snuclear weapons program.

Under pressure to take strongeraction in dealing with the defiantNorth, Lee lashed out at Pyongyang.

“Only a few meters away fromwhere shells landed, there is aschool where classes were goingon,” Lee said. “I am outraged by theruthlessness of the North Koreanregime, which is even indifferent tothe lives of little children.”

Lee has come under withering criti-cism for what opponents have calledlapses in South Korea’s response to theattack. Lee has replaced his defenseminister, ordered reinforcements forthe 4,000 troops on Yeonpyeong andfour other Yellow Sea islands and up-graded rules of engagement.

“If the North commits any addi-tional provocations against theSouth, we will make sure that it paysa dear price without fail,” Lee said.

He didn’t offer specifics aboutwhat consequences the Northwould face, and he offered fewdetails on what actions SouthKorea will take in response to lastweek’s attack, other than prom-ising to strengthen the military.

“I feel deeply responsible forfailing to protect my people’s livesand property,” Lee said. In SouthKorea, it is not rare for top offi-cials to resign, apologize or ex-press responsibility when theirgovernment faces public criticism.

Minutes after Lee finished hisspeech, North Korea issued a freshthreat to attack South Korea andthe United States, calling the al-lies’ joint war drills “yet anothergrave military provocation.”

China, the North’s only majorally, has belatedly jumped intothe fray. Beijing’s top nuclearenvoy, Wu Dawei, called for anemergency meeting in early De-cember among regional powersinvolved in nuclear disarmamenttalks, including North Korea.

Seoul gave a cool response toBeijing’s proposal, saying itshould be “reviewed very care-fully” in light of North Korea’srecent revelation of a new ura-nium-enrichment facility.

The troubled relations betweenthe two Koreas, which fought athree-year war in the 1950s, havesteadily deteriorated since Lee’sconservative government tookpower in 2008 with a tough newpolicy toward the North.

Eight months ago, a South Ko-rean warship went down in thewestern waters, killing 46 sailorsin the worst attack on the SouthKorean military since the KoreanWar. Then, last Tuesday, NorthKorean troops showered artilleryon Yeonpyeong, a South Korean-held island that houses militarybases as well as a civilian popu-lation — an attack that marked anew level of hostility.

We must accept this because of thedeaths,” Hun Sen said at the inaugura-tion of a new government building inthe capital.

“We were careless,” he added. “Thiswas a joint mistake that nobody ex-pected.”

A total of 351 people lost their lives, the majority of them women, and ques-tions have been raised over who is toblame for the tragedy.

Authorities have said a full reporton the incident would be released inthe coming days.

Initial findings from the investigat-ing committee suggest the stampedeoccurred after rumours rippled throughthe crowd that the suspension bridge to

Phnom Penh’s Diamond Island wasabout to collapse.

“The tragedy started with our wrongassessment of the situation,” said thepremier, who has described the stam-pede as Cambodia’s worst tragedy sincethe Khmer Rouge’s 1975-1979 reignof terror, which killed up to a quarter ofthe population.

The three-day festival, which marksthe reversal of the flow between theTonle Sap and Mekong rivers, usuallydraws millions of visitors to the capitalto enjoy dragon boat races, fireworksand concerts.

A national day of mourning was heldon Thursday, led by an emotional HunSen who wiped away tears as he lit in-cense and laid flowers at the foot of thebridge.

For decades, it had been the key ter-ritory of Rio’s biggest drug gang, theRed Command. “The Alemao was theheart of evil,” Beltrame said at a lateSunday news conference.

But he emphasized that his two-year-old program to push gangs out ofthe city’s sprawling shantytowns andreplace them with permanent policeposts was only beginning, that he wasnow looking ahead to the next hugeslum that police will go after —Rocinha, a sprawl of shanties and nar-row alleys that is one of Latin America’slargest slums.

He did not detail when police mightattempt to wrestle Rocinha from thedrug gang that controls it, but he wasresolute and confident in saying that itwould definitely fall.

“Criminals without a house, crimi-nals without a weapon, criminals with-out territory, criminals without moneyare far less criminal than they were be-fore,” said Beltrame, on the verge oftears, voice cracking. “We have not wonthe war, but we’ve won a difficult andimportant battle.”

He spoke hours after 2,600 policeand soldiers poured into Alemao at sun-rise, supported by armored personnelcarriers, low-flying helicopters buzzingthe slum and even a few tanks. Theyclaimed victory within two hours, say-ing they had taken control with littlefighting in the district of 85,000 resi-dents.

It was the biggest advance yet in thetwo-year effort to drive gangs from theirstrongholds in the hundreds ofshantytowns, many draped across thehills that look down on Rio’s fabledbeaches. The crusade is driven in partby the need to make foreign visitors feelsecure for the final matches of the 2014World Cup and for the 2016 Olympicsthat are meant to be showpieces ofBrazil’s emergence as growing worldforce.

Alemao was a key target because itsits near a highway that connects mostof Rio to the international airport.Rocinha, the next target, lies on a roadthat will connect the main 2016 Olym-pic venues to the rest of the city.

Rio de Janeiro Gov. Sergio Cabralsaid the campaign against gangs willgo forward. “We will continue to con-quer more territories and give peace toour citizens and the foreign visitors whocome here,” he told Globo TV.

der on more than a dozen other formergang strongholds, even encouragingtourism along streets once echoing withgunfire. The gangs reacted violently tothe campaign a week ago, staging massrobberies of motorists on key highways, burning more than 100 buses and cars, and shooting up police outposts.

The government counterattackedwith hundreds of soldiers and thousandsof police in armored vehicles, first driv-ing gangsters from the Vila Cruzeiroslum Thursday, then moving on toneighboring Alemao — their mostambitious target yet.

At least 36 people, mostly suspecteddrug traffickers, died in the gang vio-lence and resulting police raids over thepast week. Officials earlier warned thatas many as 600 gang members wereholed up in Alemao, but by Mondaypolice had made just 20 arrests, includ-ing a few of the slum’s reputed top gangleaders.

Police estimated at least 200 gang-sters remained hidden in the slum andwarned that sporadic shootouts werelikely in the coming days as securityforces searched the zone. At least onesuspected trafficker was killed in theinvasion and at least two people wereinjured. “We won,” said Mario SergioDuarte, head of Rio state’s military po-lice. “We brought freedom to the resi-dents of Alemao.”

Inside the slum, big piles of trashdotted a main dirt road that ran withraw sewage. The iron gates of store-fronts were drawn down, their sur-faces pocked with bullet holes. Spentrifle casings littered streets. Slum resi-dents, under siege for days, took ad-vantage of the calm to buy food. Oldwomen, young boys and teenagersleaned against their squat shacks sur-veying the new scene, but often hur-ried inside when a police contingentwalked by.

Some residents said the governmentwas a negligible presence in the areafor at least a decade and expressed fearthe police hold would not last.

A young pregnant woman voicedher doubts in a whisper and declined togive her name in fear of both the gangsand the police officers standing guarda few feet away. “The gangs will beback. I have no doubt they escaped andwill return after the police leave,” shesaid. “How big a police post will theyneed to secure this whole place? I don’tthink they can do it.”

A Journey into the History and Mystery of BaliUNDINEABLY BLISS or hap-

piness has become a dream and des-tination of most people. Career andmaterial achievement are the bridgeto reach it. However, when arrivingat the height of these, sometimespeople encounters there is somethinglost. Ultimately, they travel to sev-eral parts of the world to look for asatisfying answer of this matter.

Many favorite destinations of theworld now offer the combination ofleisure and spirituality as if thesetwo words had become new man-tra in travel trend. Traveling for thispurpose is focused on the experi-ence and journey. It digs out self-potential and human achievementin the past, chiefly on self-realiza-tion and his relation to nature andthe Creator. This kind of tourism isappropriate for those wishing topursue the answer above.

In the journey of time, local his-tory records that the Balinese com-munity has a bright achievement inspiritual development. Some foot-prints can be encountered throughthe heritage at favorite destinations.Gunung Kawi sanctuary, for in-stance, becomes a proof of spiritualactivity established during the ad-ministration of the King AnakWungsu (11th century). Next to thecave temples occurs a series ofmeditation cells. The rock was cut

to make some cloisters and medita-tion cells. At this location, ancientpeople can practice their meditation. It is a truly tranquil place situated atthe Petanu riverside.

Another important location isnestled at the Elephant Cave or GoaGajah, Gianyar. It is estimated tohave been founded during the reignof Warmadeva Dynasty (10th cen-tury). The sanctuary is known asKunjarapada where Kunjara (San-skrit) means elephant and padameans location. In the mass, thisname represents that it became thelast destination of Maharishi Agastyain providing his spiritual enlighten-ment in Bali.

Today, visitors can trace back andenjoy a variety of experiences inspiritual travel, ranging from visit-ing great temples to ancient sanctu-aries used to practice yoga. Even, yoga class has now been offered atseveral hotels, villas and yoga cen-ters at main destinations of Bali.Meanwhile, for relaxation and reju-venation visitors can try some spatreatments in the combination of tra-ditional method and ingredients withmodern technique. These are oftenpromoted through illustriouscatchphrases mentioning as productof mind, body and soul. To sum up,by visiting Bali you can enrich yourexperience related to spiritual and

wellness. Though the tradition hasbeen created hundreds of years ago,its practice and benefits remain rel-evant to modern life today.

More than that, Bali as a touristdestination also implements the con-cept of indigenous wisdom called TriHita Karana (THK). It stands for anintegrated application of social, en-vironmental and spiritual aspect intourism development and practices.Approximately one hundred hotels orvillas and tourist objects throughoutBali participate in the annual compe-tition of THK Awards. It is intendedto implement and preserve this sub-lime concept in their business prac-tices. By doing so, it is expected theycould give the best satisfaction to cus-tomer, surrounding community andthe operator going hand in hand withthe conservation of nature.

Ultimately, inspired by Hinduism, indigenous wisdom and local tradi-tion, the island has a variety of trea-sures, endless activities and ‘mys-tery’ to explore. They have becomeintegrated part of Balinese life. Manyvisitors come and go. Some get in-terested to join the ceremony, toroam pristine villages, or even to stayat ashrams for weeks. Hopefully, oneof the activities above can becomean answer for those wishing to bal-ance their life with any achievementat hand.(BTN/punia)

WEST QURNA, Iraq – Production from Iraq’s prizedWest Qurna Stage 1 oil field should more than triple to750,000 barrels a day in three years time, an oil official saidSunday.

The 8.6 billion barrel field, which is being developed bya consortium grouping Exxon Mobil and Shell, was amongthose awarded by Iraq during one its first international oillicensing rounds last year and is seen as a key part of thecountry’s drive to boost overall output of a resource on whichit relies for 95 percent of its foreign revenues.

West Qurna Stage 1 currently produces 234,000 barrelsper day, Madhi Swadi, the head of the joint managementcommission that runs the field, told The Associated Press.Output is set to climb to 270,000 barrels per day by May, hesaid.

Although Iraq sits on the world’s fourth largest oil re-serves, with 143.1 billion barrels according to thegovernment’s latest estimates, it is producing and exportingfar below its potential. Foreign companies are seen as keyto reviving the sector and ramping up output.

Under the agreement between Iraq and the companies, production from the West Qurna Stage I field should reach2.825 million barrels a day after 6 to 7 years. The consor-tium will be paid $1.9 per barrel for each barrel produced. That production target is up from the 2.325 million barrels aday target when the deal was announced last fall.

The consortium was originally only allowed to pump oilfrom one reservoir, but five more reservoirs were added tothe field over the summer.

Swadi said this year’s budget to develop the field stoodat $306 million, and next year’s budget is expected to be

SAN FRANCISCO – Early dis-counts may have taken some of theshine off Cyber Monday but the keyonline holiday shopping day is stillexpected to attract bargain hunterswho may not have had their fill overthe weekend.

Cyber Monday — a term coinedfive years ago for the day manypeople return to work after Thanks-giving and make online gift pur-chases on their computers — re-mains a prime shopping day online. But its novelty has now been par-tially eclipsed by e-commerce pro-motions earlier in the season, includ-ing on Thanksgiving itself.

Retailers from BestBuy.com toWalmart.com and Staples.com haveeven opted to offer Cyber Mondaydeals one day early, on newly coined“Cyber Sunday.”

The key is versatility, online ex-perts say, as well as making sureshoppers heading to the Web alwaysfind something to inspire them toclick on a sale.

John Thompson, senior vicepresident and general manager ofBestBuy.com, said Cyber Mondayremains a “really viable marketingconcept,” but smart retailers mustoffer choice.

Even though European authoritiesagreed to lend Ireland 85 billion eu-ros ($115 billion) on Sunday in thehope it would assure investors that allEuropean nations can repay theirdebts, markets were skeptical that thedeal would stave off further contagion.

Asian stocks struggled most of theday but drew some comfort from afirmer start in Europe, where leadingEuropean shares (.FTEU3) rose 0.8percent in early trade. The euro fell aslow as $1.3183 in Asia as investorsworried European authorities mightnot have the means to rescue all fis-cally-poor European nations includ-ing Portugal and especially Spain, whose economy is much bigger thanIreland’s.

“There are still lingering worriesabout the rest of the countries, in-cluding Portugal and Spain,” saidLorraine Tan, the director of Asianequity research at Standard &Poor’s. “It does raise risk worriesand there are less people willing totake risk at this stage.”

SYDNEY – Doubts over whether a rescue deal for debt-soaked Ireland can plug Europe’s debtcrisis drove the euro to two-month lows on Monday, though shares in Europe and Asia managedto move higher.

Indeed, many Asian investors saidthey wanted to wait and see how U.S.and European markets take to the res-cue deal before making any bigmoves.

A late 1.3 percent spurt in HongKong’s share index (.HSI) (.HK)helped to lift the MSCI Asian stockindex outside Japan(.MIAPJ0000PUS) 0.9 percent higherby late afternoon. Japan’s Nikkei(.N225) also rose 0.9 percent to a five-month high. (.T) But traders noted theTokyo market was thin, suggestingbuyers were prudent nonetheless, es-pecially with tensions between the twoKoreas still bubbling.

U.S. stock futures were buoyant, with S&P 500 futures up 0.9 percent, driven higher in part by a healthy startto the Christmas shopping season. (.N)

EURO UNDER PRESSURE,FLIGHT TO DOLLARS

The euro recouped some lossesby late trade in Asia to stand at$1.3280, but was still some way be-

low a high of $1.3345 struck afterthe Irish aid was announced. TheU.S. dollar, considered a safer assetbecause it is widely traded, initiallybenefited from the shift from risk.

The dollar index (.DXY) hit atwo-month high of 80.652 beforepulling back in late trade to 80.101.On the yen, the U.S. currency heldnear a two-month peak. The reac-tion in the commodity markets weremore mixed.

Oil brushed aside the firmer dol-lar to rise past $84 per barrel assome thought the Irish deal bodewell for energy demand.

Copper prices, an essential in-gredient for industrial work, weresteady while iron ore prices hov-ered at 6-1/2-month peaks. Iron oreis needed to make steel and is con-sidered a barometer for the state ofeconomic activity. Gold, on theother hand, which tends to be indemand when investors shy awayfrom risk, was a shade firmer at$1,363.19.

“There’s demand out there, but youhave consumers spending their timedifferently,” he said. “If you don’thave one group that shops early, you’ll have those who say ‘I’ll enjoymy Thanksgiving and those samedeals or as-good deals will be thereCyber Monday.’”

Marketing firms say tactics havechanged in luring consumers to buyonline. Whereas in prior years a fullemail inbox of online deals awaitedthose back at work on Monday, theoffers now increasingly come on BlackFriday if not before. Disneystore.com,for one, had a “record sales day” onThanksgiving, according to Jim Field-ing, president of Disney Stores.

U.S. online sales were up 33 per-cent on Thanksgiving this year, ac-cording to web analytics firm IBMCoremetrics.

Just as many promotions are sent viaemail on Black Friday, the day afterThanksgiving, as on Cyber Monday, according to Responsys. And half ofretailers planned to send email on CyberSunday as well as on Thanksgiving, theinteractive marketing firm found.

PayPal, the online payments unitof eBay, said its first holiday spike inpayment volume came on November15. On Black Friday, total paymentvolume, or the total value of goodssold, rose 27 percent versus last year.

LOS ANGELES – Despite decades spent playing sobercommanders and serious captains, Leslie Nielsen insisted thathe was always made for comedy. He proved it in his career’ssecond act. “Surely you can’t be serious,” an airline passen-ger says to Nielsen in “Airplane!” the 1980 hit that turned theactor from dramatic leading man to comic star.

Planet.” He found his best dramatic role as the captain of anoverturned ocean liner in the 1972 disaster movie, “The PoseidonAdventure.” Behind the camera, the serious actor was a well-known prankster. That was an aspect of his personality neverexploited, however, until “Airplane!” was released in 1980 andbecame a huge hit.

As the doctor aboard a plane in which the pilots, and some ofthe passengers, become violently ill, Nielsen says they must getto a hospital right away. “A hospital? What is it?” a flight atten-dant asks, inquiring about the illness.

“It’s a big building with patients, but that’s not importantright now,” Nielsen deadpans. It was the beginning of a wholenew career in comedy. Nielsen would go on to appear in suchcomedies as “Repossessed” — a takeoff on “The Exorcist” —and “Mr. Magoo,” in which he played the title role of the good-natured bumbler.

But it took years before he got there. He played DebbieReynolds’ sweetheart in 1957’s popular “Tammy and the Bach-elor,” and he became well known to baby boomers for his roleas the Revolutionary War fighter Francis Marion in the DisneyTV adventure series “The Swamp Fox.”

He asked to be released from his contract at MGM, and as afreelancer, he appeared in a series of undistinguished movies.“I played a lot of leaders, autocratic sorts; perhaps it was myCanadian accent,” he said.

“Dr. Funshine” prescribes laughter yoga for seniorsHer prescription: Frequent doses of

“laughter yoga,” — an hour-long,mind-body exercise class that com-bines yogic breathing with simulatedphysical laughter and silly banter.

The exercises, combined withplayfulness, singing, dancing and eyecontact, usually induce authenticcackling, which Meeks and othersbelieve is good medicine for every-body from cancer patients to peoplewith dementia and depression.

“It’s hard to laugh and worry at the

But that isnothing, there are thousands morevillages like these in Nepal.” It allstarted when Pun travelled to theUnited States in the 1990s to studyfor a masters degree. The Internetwas just becoming popular, and oneof his professors suggested they setup a web site for his home village.

It was one of the first Internet sitesto mention Nepal, and by the timehe returned home, Pun was beingbombarded by messages from peoplearound the world who wanted to visitthe 800-strong mountain community.

CANCUN, Mexico – World temperatures could soar by 4 degreesCelsius (7.2 degrees Fahrenheit) by the 2060s in the worst case of glo-bal climate change and require an annual investment of $270 billionjust to contain rising sea levels, studies suggested on Sunday.

degrees C rise above pre-industriallevels. “Across many sectors —coastal cities, farming, water stress, ecosystems or migration, the impactswill be greater,” than at 2 degrees, wrote Mark New of Oxford Univer-sity in England, who led the inter-national team.

One study, published in the Brit-ish journal Philosophical Transac-tions of the Royal Society A, said tem-peratures could rise by 4 degrees Cin the worst case by the early 2060s.

Other scenarios showed thethreshold breached later in the cen-tury or not at all by 2100, raisingrisks of abrupt changes such as a lossof Arctic sea ice in summer, a thawin permafrost or a drying out of theAmazon rainforest.

MIGRATIONOne of the papers gave what it

called a “pragmatic estimate” that sealevels might rise by between 0.5 and 2meters (1.64 to 6.56 feet) by 2100 iftemperatures rose 4 degrees Celsius.

Containing a sea level rise of 2meters, mostly building Dutch-stylesea walls, would require annual in-vestments of up to $270 billion ayear by 2100.

That sum might limit migration toperhaps 305,000 people from the mostvulnerable areas, wrote RobertNicholls of the University ofSouthampton. Lack of protective mea-sures could mean the forced resettle-ment of 187 million people. Peopleliving on small islands, in Asia, Africaor river deltas were most at risk.

The studies concluded that gov-ernments should do more both to cutgreenhouse gas emissions and re-search back-up methods such as“geo-engineering” programs thatcould dim sunlight or seek to suckgreenhouse gases from the air.

“Chelsea, a month ago, lookedabsolute certainties but they’restruggling to get results. They’llget stronger when they get somekey players back, but so will we.”Now all Redknapp has to do isconvince his squad.

“I don’t know if the players be-lieve it,” he added. “I’ve said:‘Listen, there’s no reason why wecan’t have a go’. I said last yearwe should target the top four. “I’mnot going to say we’ll win thechampionship now, but we’ve gota chance. Arsenal and Manches-ter City have a chance, too.“Chelsea and United arefavourites, but nothing’s impos-sible.”

Although Federer is publicly ada-mant he has nothing to be disappointedabout over the last 12 months, privatelyhe will feel a nagging sense of regretat the loss of the world number oneranking to Nadal, who also took theFrench Open and Wimbledon titlesfrom the Swiss star. That was whatmade the 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory overNadal in the final at London’s O2Arena on Sunday so significant for theworld number two.

In Federer’s mind, his record-equalling fifth title in the prestigiousend-of-year event was secondary tothe message the win sent to Nadal andhis other rivals at the top of therankings. “I’m happy I made my ninthfinal this season. I’ve won five titles, won a slam. That obviously makes mebe very positive for next year. I be-lieve I can have another great seasonin 2011,” he said.

“I’m just really happy the way Iwas able to finish the season in style, playing some of my best tennis, re-ally saving the best for last. “Obvi-ously, beating Rafa in the finalsmakes it extra special because of theyear he had.

And the American, speak-ing on German television on Sunday, claimed that world cycling chiefs haveprotected top riders from the scandalof positive doping tests for the past 20years.

Contador, who has won the race’syellow jersey three times, is facing anuncertain future. He is currently sus-pended provisionally as anti-dopingexperts decide whether a positive testfor trace amounts of the banned weightloss/muscle building drug at the 2010race merits a lengthy ban.

Landis knows a thing or two aboutdoping practices. He was stripped ofthe 2006 Tour de France crown after apositive test for testosterone, and de-spite denying doping for four years hefinally confessed several months ago.

In making his confession, he allegedthat former team-mate LanceArmstrong was involved in systematicdoping during his spectacular Tour deFrance career. LONDON – Roger Federer believes his ATP World Tour Finals triumph against Rafael Nadalwill provide him with the perfect springboard to return to the top in 2011.

see how someone can say it’s been abad season. I had some tough losses, sure but you’re not going to win ev-ery tournament you play. “After hav-ing somewhat of a disappointing clay,Halle, Wimbledon stretch, where Iwasn’t able to win any tournaments, maybe didn’t play some of my besttennis, played a bit passive, it wasimportant that I was able to pick upmy game.”

The 29-year-old will take a shortvacation now before starting his prepa-rations for the new campaign, whichhe begins by defending the AustralianOpen in January. But the 16-time GrandSlam champion is well aware thatNadal would love to repeat his remark-able year, which included successiveGrand Slam triumphs at the FrenchOpen, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Nadal leads their career head-to-head 14-8 and Federer admits everymatch between them seems to carryan historic edge. “I think the men’sgame is at an absolute high right now, with a lot of exciting games beingplayed, with a lot of respect. Also Ithink having had me and Rafa bothmade the career Grand Slam alreadyat a young age I think is great for the

game,” he said.“We’re obviously playing not only

for ourselves and beating the otherguys, but also for history. I think there’sa lot at stake always in all our matcheswe play in the future. I think it’s won-derful.”

Nadal was happy to credit Federerfor his impressive display but he hintedtiredness after his epic three-set winover Andy Murray in the semi-finalson Saturday had taken its’ toll on him.

“He played unbelievable. He wasunplayable in the first set. I still hadchances in the second and the begin-ning of the third, but he played betterthan me,” Nadal said. “The thing iseverybody saw the match on Saturday,so everybody’s free to make his ownopinion.

Spurs rally to handHornets first NBAhome defeat

Popovic tweaked the defense, goingwith a smaller, quicker lineup, andthe Spurs held the Hornets to 35.5percent shooting and forced nineturnovers after the interval.

“I saw a 17-point deficit, so wechanged up the defense and it helpedus,” Popovich said. “We made shotsand got more aggressive, got a littlemore physical and just competedbetter in the second half.” The Spurswent into the final period trailing 77-72. They hit their first nine shots ofthe quarter and seized the lead forgood.

“We’ve got to execute better onoffense and push the tempo. That’smy fault,” said Hornets star ChrisPaul. “I pushed it in the first half andI guess I didn’t in the second halfand they were able to get their de-fense set. I’ve got to pick up thepace.”

Hornets first-year coach MontyWilliams, who started his coachingcareer as an intern under Popovich, also shouldered some blame.

“The bottom line is I gotoutcoached,” he said. “CoachPopovich made a great move, goingsmall, and I didn’t make the imme-diate adjustments to put us in posi-tion to hang on. “It was just an old-school whipping from a coachingstandpoint.”

in the peloton. “I know of riders takingclenbuterol. The chances of gettingcaught are higher than they used to be,but they’re still quite small because thedrug usually disappears before the test,”said Landis on ARD.

Contador claimed his result wasdown to contaminated meat whichsomeone from his Astana team boughtin Spain, and which he ate on the race’ssecond rest day.

Landis meanwhile reiterated claimsagainst Armstrong, alleging the seven-

time Tour de France champion and can-cer survivor doped during his career. But he also claimed that world cyclingchiefs, in particular UCI chief PatMcQuaid and his predecessor HeinVerbruggen, “protected” the top ridersin the peloton.

“In the peloton, everyone knows thatPat McQuaid, Hein Verbruggen andother UCI officials have protected someriders, and not others, for the past 20years,” added Landis. “It was manipu-lation, and their way of creating stars.”

There had been speculation in Italy that some of Ferrari’s leading staffmight be in the firing line as a consequence, but company president Lucadi Montezemolo insisted that this would not happen.

“Changes within the team? That is not our philosophy, because for yearsnow we have adopted a policy based on dynamic stability,” he said atValencia today. “A few minor adjustments are possible, but no major up-heaval.

“And after all, it has to be said that if we had not got it wrong with that‘penalty kick’ in Abu Dhabi, today the discussion would be completelydifferent.” Di Montezemolo also gave team boss Stefano Domenicali hisfull backing. “I am very happy with the work with which StefanoDomenicali is moving us forward, with great ability, spirit and a sense ofbalance,” said the Ferrari president.

Alonso agreed that the outcome in Abu Dhabi should not be allowed toovershadow everything else that Ferrari had achieved. “The comeback wemounted from the mid-point of the season onwards, the way in which we allpulled together, more united than ever, is much more important,” he said.

“There were races where we lost points, just as there were some wherethe others lost more, otherwise they would have won much earlier.

“So much has been said about Abu Dhabi, but it’s easy to talk withhindsight. But I think that at Red Bull they would have made other choicesafter Korea for example.

“The team was very disappointed with the missed opportunity butFerrari’s great strength is that does not sink into depression because of onemistake, on the contrary, it reacts to be even more determined the follow-ing year.”

Juan Manuel Marquez, of Mexico, celebrateshis victory over Michael Katsidis, of Australia,in a WBA/WBO championship boxing matchSaturday, Nov. 27, 2010, in Las Vegas.

Marquez stopped Michael Katsidis in the ninth roundSaturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, win-ning an all-action battle and certain candidate for Fightof the Year. Moments later, he turned his attention tosettling the score with the man considered the best inthe world.

“Obviously, Pacquiao is my priority. I’ll go up to140 (pounds), it’s no problem,” Marquez said througha translator. “Stop making excuses, Manny. Fight me.”

The two have met twice before, and both of the boutswere thrilling. They fought to a 12-round draw in 2004,and Pacquiao won a close split decision in March 2008.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum said in a phone inter-view with The Associated Press on Sunday that a thirdfight with Marquez is a distinct possibility, althoughjust like everyone else, he’s waiting to see whether FloydMayweather Jr. steps into the ring against Pacquiao inwhat could be the richest fight in boxing history.

Other candidates include Shane Mosley, who hasalready put financial numbers on the table for a fight, and welterweight titleholder Andre Berto, who lookedsensational in a first-round knockout of FreddyHernandez on the Marquez undercard Saturday night.

“Mayweather is the priority, but if he doesn’t wantthe fight for whatever reason, then there are three pos-sibilities: Mosley, Berto and Marquez,” Arum said. “AllI need is two numbers at this stage to go to Pacquiaoon: what guarantee they’re looking for and how muchper home above a certain number (on the pay-per-view).”

Arum wouldn’t say what he’s been offered byMosley, but Antonio Margarito received $3 million plus$3 per home over 700,000 buys for his loss to Pacquiaoearlier this month. Marquez received $4 million plus$1 per home over a million when he lost to Mayweatherlast year.

The Top Rank boss plans to discuss a fight with Bertopromoter Lou DiBella on Monday, and hopes to touchbase with Marquez’s people later in the week. Arum’sflying to the Philippines on Dec. 12 to celebratePacquiao’s birthday, and will present the offers then.

“My phone is on,” said Richard Schaefer of GoldenBoy Promotions, which represents Marquez. “If thePacquiao vs. Marquez III fight isn’t happening, it’s notbecause of Golden Boy.”
