The Head of Bali GovernmentTourism Office, IB. KadeSubhiksu, said the US citizensmade Bali as one of their favoritedestinations. However, since itwas not worked on maximally, from 30 million people takingoverseas travel per year, the ma-jority of them paid a visit toCanada, Mexico, Europe, and theCaribbean.

“US tourists will tend to returnto the same destination if they re-ceived a satisfactory impression. On average, their expenses duringholiday in Bali reached USD136.81 to USD 163.60 per day,”said Subhiksu in Denpasar onWednesday (Apr 6).

In the meantime, Herdy D.Sayogha, one of the tourism per-petrators actively pioneered newpotential markets had expressedpreviously that the US market wasformerly the belle of the numberof tourist visits to Bali. However, since the terrorist action on Sep-tember 11 destroying the TwinTowers (WTC), the number oftourists visit from the Uncle Samcountry had decreased. The decline

kept on continuing after the Balibombs 2002 and even the numberof tourist visits lay at the nadirpoint.

“Bali has become a favoritedestination for the US tourismmarket. Similarly, Bali often wonthe votes or direct election byreaders of leading travel maga-zines in the country of the Statueof Liberty,” he said.

In the meantime, Coordinator ofthe Association of Indonesia Tourand Travel Agencies (ASITA) forBali, NTT, and NTB Region,Bagus Sudibya, said that it wastime for Bali to keep an eye andwork on the American market op-timally so they could visit Bali. Toaddress this market segment wasrequired the readiness of govern-ment and tourism perpetrators toaccelerate the flight from theUnited States to Bali. Likewise, itwas necessary to consider aboutthe flight readiness of Indonesia tofly to America. “Government andBali tourism perpetrators shouldnot ignore the American market,”he said.

Meanwhile, other markets suchas Australia, Asia, and Europewere pretty well established toBali. With the return of the Ameri-can market, there would be an eq-uitable balance for the Bali’s tour-ism market. (par)

NATOis coordinating coalition air strikesspearheaded three weeks ago byFrance, but little headway is beingmade on uprooting Gaddafi frompower and government troops areholding Misrata, Libya’s third city, under siege.

Gaddafi’s use of deadly forceagainst civilians in past weeks trig-gered a U.N. Security Council resolu-tion authorising air strikes against hisarmy and NATO now accuses him ofusing human shields to make it harderfor its warplanes to reach targets.

Juppe, whose government was thefirst to come out and back Libya’srebel council, said the group’s pledgeto respect human rights meant the

SANAA – A Gulf Arab plan for Yemen’s president to step down will guarantee the veteran leader and hisfamily immunity from prosecution, an opposition source said on Thursday, and youth activists said thatwas enough to reject it. The United States and Gulf Arab countries including Yemen’s key financial backer,Saudi Arabia, now appear ready to push aside a long-time ally against al Qaeda’s Yemen-based wing toavoid a chaotic collapse of the poorest Arab state.

has long angered many Yemenis, im-munity from prosecution and youthactivists said in a statement that wasnot acceptable.

“We affirm that this is a people’srevolution demanding the fall and thetrial of a regime ... to build a new ci-vilian state according to the will of thepeople, not international parties orpolitical parties that do not representus,” said a statement in the name of acoalition of protester groups in Sanaa.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place onthe same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. Whennew moon is used then the celebration always happens onnew moon or full moon. The day of course can differ thereligious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full daywith some temple celebrating for three days while the cel-ebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is neverless than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressedwith pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted withgold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hungin the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placedred, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods areworshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these um-brellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributesof Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”,long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments ofyoung coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and col-ored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the gracewith which the carry their load on their heads.

MEXICO CITY – Fifty-nine bodies were found buried Wednesday in a series of pits in thenorthern Mexico state of Tamaulipas, near the site where suspected drug gang members massa-cred 72 migrants last summer, officials said. Security forces stumbled on the site as they wereinvestigating reports that passengers had been pulled off several buses by gunmen in the area inwhat may have been an attempt at forced recruitment by a drug gang.

Morelos Canseco said two of the deadwere women. Many of the victims foundin the pits appeared to have died be-tween 10 and 15 days ago, dates thatwould roughly match the bus abduc-tions, he said.

Canseco said state officials begangetting reports that gunmen had beenstopping buses, starting around March25. At least two more cases were re-ported in the following days. Thebuses were allowed to continue onwith their remaining passengers ineach case.

The bodies were being examined todetermine their identifies and the causesof death, the Tamaulipas state govern-ment said in statement in which it “en-ergetically condemned” the crimes.

The statement did not identify whatdrug gang, if any, that the arrested sus-pects belonged to, or why they mighthave hijacked the bus.

President Felipe Calderon’s officeissued a statement saying the find “un-derlines the cowardliness and total lackof scruples of the criminal organizationsthat cause violence in our country.”

DUMAI - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency(BMKG) of Riau province said the number of hot spots in Sumatranow was 17 or down from the previous day when there were 57 hotspots.

Satellite monitoring by NOAA (National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration) had shown, the 17 hot spots were scattered in severalprovinces, namely South Sumatra (seven hot spots), Aceh (two hotspots) as well as North Sumatra and Jambi with one hot spot each, ananalyst of Riau’s BMKG, Marzuki, said.

As for Riau where 30 hot spots had been detected previously, therewere now only six hot spots, namely in the districts of Indragiri Hulu(three hot spots), Kampar and Siak one each.

“Some of the other Riau districts which also had detectable hot spotssuch as Rokan Hilir, Meranti, Bengkalis, Dumai and Pekanbaru cityare currently nil,” Marzuki said.

He explained, the reduction of the hot spots due to the rain whichfell in most Sumatra regions including Riau.

“For the last two days the rain falls almost equally in Riaubut in different times. The satellite monitoring yesterday(Wednesday 6/4), in Pekanbaru rain occurred in the afternoon. While in coastal areas such as Dumai, Rokan Hilir, Bengkalisand Meranti, the rain intensity was going on day and night,”Marzuki noted.

Up to two days ahead, the rain is still likely to fall in all regions ofRiau with low to moderate intensity, he added.

“The rain opportunity is more concentrated in central Riau , south-ern and coastal regions. While the air temperature in the next few daysis estimated to be between 32 degrees – 33 degrees Celsius,” Marzukisaid.

Regarding the possibility of smoke export from Sumatra mainlandto neighboring countries like Malaysia and Singapore, Marzuki pre-dicted, it was very small considering the wind direction was more likelyto revolve in Sumatra.

“Dominant wind direction rotates in the west and east of Sumatra. The haze tends to a number of areas affected by fires and forest landitself, such as Jambi, South Sumatra, North Sumatra and Riau,” Marzukisaid.

The micro-algae was developedas a raw material for making bio-die-sel, a researcher at IPB’s Agro-in-dustrial Technology Department,Prof. Suprihatin, said here Thursday.

She had done the research withher colleagues, Dr. MuhammadRomli and Ir. Ismayana Andes, MT.

“The conversion of food into en-ergy could lead to food insecurity, sothat a strategic step is needed to de-velop and optimize the role of agri-culture as a supplier of energy or bio-fuel without sacrificing food and theecological balance,” Suprihatin said.

Micro-algae has several advan-tages compared with other crops, suchas high productivity due to rapidgrowth rate that is only in hours ordays, do not require fertile land so itdoes not compete with food crops.

BOGOR - Researchers at the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB)have successfully created the design of a system to make micro-algaeas a raw material for bio-diesel from the liquid wastes of industrialfarms, slaughterhouses and sugar industries.

combined for environmental man-agement (nutrient recycling, waterconservation, and bio-fiksasi carbondioxide or greenhouse gas emissionreduction), as well as efficient in theabsorption of solar energy.

Biomass contains valuable mate-rials such as proteins, oils or fats, vitamins, minerals, pigment, betacarotene, an active ingredient, aswell as fiber, which can be used forvarious purposes.

Micro-algae also require a smallfee for the investment and operationor maintenance. Prof. Suprihatinsaid, carbon dioxide is the main foodmicroalgae.

The climatic and geographicalconditions, such as sunlight intensitythroughout the year, the relativelyhigh air temperatures and the avail-ability of land also support the appli-

cation of this system in Indonesia. The design of Prof. Suprihatin

and the team is equipped with theoptimization, design parameters oroperations and techno-economicanalysis.

“This study is divided into twostages. The first stage is character-izing micro-algae growth in agro-industry waste water through thedetermination of the valuesof growth kineticparameters. The second stage, thedesign process and micro-algae pro-duction systems,” Prof. Suprihatinexplained.

The research was conducted in2009-2010 in the laboratory of Tech-nology and Environmental Manage-ment, Department of Agro-industrialTechnology, Faculty of AgriculturalTechnology, IPB.

The testing types and amounts ofmicro-algae according to the censusconducted by Sedgwick RafterCounting Method (SRC), in the Pro-ductivity and Environmental Waterslaboratory, Department of FisheriesResource Management, Faculty of

Fisheries and Marine Science, IPB.The research results showed,

from the three tested liquid waste, the liquid waste from abattoirs andanimal husbandry, potential to beused as a micro-algae growth sub-strate.

“We have identified three types ofmicro-algae that grow- predomi-nantly in the waste namely Chlorellasp, Scenedesmus sp andAnkistrodesmus sp. These types arevery different from the type of mi-cro-algae that grows in the inoculumadded. This shows the compositionof waste water determines the typeof micro-algae that can grow andbreed,” Prof. Suprihatin explained.

Chlorella contains 14-22 percentfat. Fats from micro-algae are con-verted into bio-fuel feedstock.

However, the development of mi-cro-algae as a bio-fuel source is stillnot competitive. At the level of cur-rent crude oil price which is about100 dollars per barrel, to make mi-cro-algae bio-fuel becomes com-petitive, the operational costs of mi-cro-algae biomass production with

oil content of about 14.7 percenthave to be less than US$200 per ton,or about Rp1,8 million per ton.

“The production of micro-algaefor large-scale energy production isstill in the development phase. Mi-cro-algae-based bio-diesel produc-tion costs still require a significantreduction for diesel in order that canbe competitive with other fuels,”Prof. Suprihatin noted.

Although the operational costs ofmicro-algae production from agro-industrial waste water is enoughhigh, but the cost analysis was notyet taking into account for otherpossible benefits both economic andenvironmental.

The such possible benefits as bio-gas production in the pre-treatment ofliquid waste, organic fertilizer fromanaerobic digester, a byproduct of thefeed material or other high value prod-ucts, decrease greenhouse gas emis-sions, waste water treatment, nutrientrecycling, water recycling and preven-tion of eutrophication in receivingwater bodies, as well as other socialbenefits, Prof.Suprihatin said.

Endek Clothes of Klungkung EnterItalian and Japanese Market

Klungkung, Bali or nationally, butalso from overseas like Italy andJapan. Though an earthquake fol-lowed by tsunami disaster hit Ja-pan, the effect is not so significantto the demand for endek fabricfrom the sunrise country.

Increasing interests in endekclothes have an impact on crafts-men where the demand for endekclothes also shows a rapid growthin Klungkung Regency. Even, asingle craftsman can produce up to500 meters of endek clothes everyday. The endek clothes producedare divided into two types, namelyplain cloth and cloth with motif. One of the handicraftsmen isWayan Suartika, the owner of‘Ardini’ endek clothes handicraft atJabon, Sampalan Tengah, DawanSubdistrict.

However, amidst the increasingdemand, labor difficulties haunt thecraftsmen. They have difficulty toobtain some labors that are willingto weave endek clothes in order theycan meet consumer demand. As aresult, artisans are unable to meetall requests, whereas until now theKlungkung Regency actually stillhas thousands of unemployment, both educated and uneducated ones.

Meanwhile, the Head ofKlungkung Social, Manpower andTransmigration Services, NyomanRahayu, said that unemploymentrate in Klungkung Regency reached4005 people from about 134,380 jobseekers with age of 15 years orolder. Klungkung Regency was un-able to reduce the number of unem-

ployment and to create job oppor-tunities other than opening vacan-cies of civil servant aspirants eachyear. Rahayu also admitted thather party could not engenderskilled unemployment becauseuntil now Klungkung Regencydid not have a vocational trainingcenter (BLK).

This condition is certainly incontrary to the difficulty under-gone by the endek weaving handi-craftsmen. Wayan Suartika alsoexperienced similar condition. The demand for his endek weav-ing works (Ardini Endek Handi-craft) was admitted to increase. Itwas not only from locally Bali(except for Gianyar) but also fromoutside Bali such as Lombok upto overseas like Italy and Japan.

Formerly, to accomplish the or-ders, Suartika employed morethan 200 workers. However, lastyear his workers only remainedsome 100 people. Related to de-crease in the number of workers, the man familiarly addressed asSongkrong by most of his rela-tions said that younger genera-tion of Bali today, especially theyounger generation of theserombotan (assorted saladsserved with hot spices) land pre-ferred to choose other jobs such

as working in supermarket or a ca-reer in offices, public and privatesector. In reality, income of anendek weaver was not less than acareer in the office or working insupermarket. “The weavers work-ing with us get a minimum incomeof IDR 800,000 per month. Ofcourse, such amount of salary can-not certainly be earned if workingin supermarket,” he said.

Suartika had pioneered theendek weaving handicrafts since1982. Initially, his business wasinitiated by one cagcag or non-mechanical loom (ATBM). Now,the numbers continued to increaseeven reached 200 units. The priceof cagcag equipment reached up toIDR 2.5 million per unit. With sucha amount of equipment he owned,Suartika could produce endekclothes up to 500 meters with vari-ous motifs each day.

Other than endek clothes,Klungkung Regency also has uniqueweaving works, one of the productsis cepuk cloth in Nusa Penida. Un-fortunately, the number of weaver inNusa Penida has decreased. On thataccount, it requires serious attentionof government to re-encourage them,so distinctive characteristic ofKlungkung can be well maintainedin the future. (bal)

TOKYO – Japan Airlines Corp.is calling on its employees to takeunpaid leave in May and June dueto a plunge in demand for air travelfollowing the March tsunami andensuing nuclear radiation crisis.

The airline, known as JAL, saidThursday it expects around 100workers will apply for a voluntaryleave of absence in each month. Thescheme is open to all its 12,000workers.

JAL said foreign travel demandplunged after the March 11 disastersdamaged a coastal nuclear powerplant, which has been leaking radia-

Obama met Republican House ofRepresentatives Speaker John Boehnerand Democratic Senate leader HarryReid late Wednesday, seeking to defusea hugely significant showdown beforea midnight Friday deadline for federalfunding to run dry.

If no deal is reached, vast parts ofthe US government will be shuttered, forcing combat troops to go withoutpaychecks and national parks to closein a shutdown that could also damagethe fragile economic recovery.

“I thought the meetings were frank, they were constructive and what theydid was narrow the issues and clarifythe issues that are still outstanding,”Obama told reporters after the 90-minute talks ended.

“I remain confident if we are seri-ous about getting something done, weshould be able to complete a deal andget it passed and avert a shutdown.”

“I am absolutely convinced we canget this done. There is no reason whywe should have a government shut-down.”

The talks, designed to pull both sidesback from the political brink and fundthe government through October 1,came after Obama earlier told Repub-licans to “quit playing games” whilethey questioned his leadership.

FRANKFURT – The EuropeanCentral Bank is set Thursday to raiseits interest rates for the first time sinceJuly 2008 as concern over inflationtrumps fears of collateral damage toweaker eurozone economies.

“Even a small monetary tighteningwill affect the eurozone economy as awhole and the peripheral economiesin particular,” Capital Economics Eu-ropean economist Ben May said.

Two questions analysts are askingis how big an increase the ECB couldannounce to bolster its inflation-fight-ing credentials, and whether it wouldbe the first of a series that could ex-tend into 2012.

In March, ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet flagged a rate hike asinflation climbed well above the bank’starget of just below 2.0 percent andsuggested it might be on the order of25 basis points to 1.25 percent.

The benchmark rate for the 17-na-tion zone has been at a record low 1.0percent since May 2009.

With inflation at 2.6 percent andclimbing, the ECB’s governing coun-cil appears to have decided to act aheadof its peers the US Federal Reserve, the Bank of England or the Bank ofJapan.

But countries like Greece, Irelandand Portugal that are struggling withpublic deficit and debt crises will notwelcome higher rates more appropri-ate for stronger eurozone economiessuch as France and Germany.

The prospect of a rate hike pushedthe euro above $1.43 Wednesday and“if markets remain convinced that theECB is about to embark on a series ofrate hikes, the region?s fiscal crisislooks set to continue to worsen,” Maysaid.

Higher rates could hit southerneurozone countries quickly, for ex-

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama has failed to break a budget impasse with Repub-licans during dramatic late-night talks, though he said the two sides were creeping toward a dealto avert a government shutdown.

together before reporters outside theWhite House after leaving the talks.

“We did have a productive conver-sation this evening. We do have somehonest differences but I do think wemade some progress,” said Boehner.

“But I want to reiterate there is noagreement on a number... there is anintent on both sides to continue to worktogether to try to resolve this.

“No one wants the government toshut down.”

Neither side would identify wherethe differences remained.

Republicans however are demand-ing sweeping budget cuts in domesticspending and foreign aid and policychanges, while Obama has offered cuts, but has dug in his heels at cutting cru-cial education and environmental pro-grams.

The faceoff is the most overt clashyet between Obama and Republicanswho captured the House in an elec-toral rout in November, and could goa long way to defining the early ter-rain of the president’s 2012 reelec-tion bid.

A Wall Street Journal/NBC Newspoll found only 28 percent of Repub-licans want their leaders in Congressto compromise over the budget cuts, compared to 68 percent of Democratsand 76 percent of political indepen-dents who said they wanted their lead-

ers on Capitol Hill to do so.Officials said around 800,000 fed-

eral workers could be temporarily laidoff if the government shuts down, andwarned the economy could get a hit, just as growth is slowly picking up.

“At a time when you’re strugglingto pay your bills and meet your respon-sibilities, the least we can do is meetour responsibilities to produce a bud-get,” Obama said in Pennsylvania.

Boehner had earlier sharpened histone after a meeting of the Republi-can House caucus that included con-servative budget hawks demandinghuge spending cuts from party lead-ers who must eventually find a way tomake a deal with Senate Democratson a budget.

Obama said a shutdown could haltapprovals of home loans backed bythe government and shut off smallbusiness grants.

Aides said the shutdown wouldstop paychecks for troops abroad, though they would eventually get paidin full once a shutdown was over.

Paper tax refunds would be de-layed, but electronic filing and rebateswould continue to operate. Federallyfunded museums and the National Zooin Washington would also be shut.

Washington would meanwhile losethe last weekend of its annual cherryblossom festival, a hit with tourists.

JAL calls on employeesto take unpaid leave

tion into the air, vegetables, tap wa-ter and now the Pacific Ocean.

The number of passengers forJAL’s international flights fromMarch 12 to March 31 was 25 per-cent lower than what the airline hadforecast. For JAL’s domestic flights, passengers were down 28 percentfrom its forecast.

To cope with falling demand, JALwill cut 74 international flights, mostly Asian routes, in April. The74 flights account for around fivepercent of JAL’s total internationalflights in the month.

The move will affect popularroutes including flights from Tokyoto Honolulu and Tokyo to Seoul.

ECB set for first ratehike since July 2008

ample via home owners who havetaken out mortgages with floating in-terest rates, while a stronger euro willdent their export earnings.

The ECB has taken care howeverto maintain generous cash loans tocommercial banks across the regionso money markets function smoothly.

It has also said that all bonds issuedor guaranteed by the Irish governmentwould be accepted as collateral forcentral bank loans, easing pressure onstruggling Irish banks.

Meanwhile, a Portuguese politicalcrisis is pushing Lisbon closer to seek-ing a European Union bail-out.

The finance ministry insistedWednesday it will “meet its financialcommitments,” but the treasury had tooffer sharply higher interest rates toraise badly needed funds.

Markets increasingly believeLisbon will have to ask for help atsome point, like Greece and Irelanddid last year while public deficits inGreece, Portugal and Spain all nowlook to be higher than initially fore-cast.

On the debt front, the EuropeanCommission has excluded a restruc-turing of Greek debt as EU and otherinternational officials pore over a newausterity budget in Athens.

Germany insisted Wednesday thatPortugal, if it needed help, would haveto call on the European Financial Sta-bility Fund (EFSF) rather than try toarrange a bridging loan instead to easeits debt woes ahead of June 5 polls.

After approving exceptional mea-sures during the financial crisis, theECB wants to move monetary policyback towards normal and is pressinggovernments to resolve chronic sol-vency issues.

The eurozone’s patchy financialfortunes are mirrored in economic datathat show growth in private sectorlending but a fall in retail sales.

NEW YORK – Men and women will compete head-to-head, some of the more exotic awards like best NativeAmerican album and best spoken-word children’s recordhave been eliminated, and the number of categories hasbeen reduced by more than 30 in the biggest overhaul inthe 53-year history of the Grammys. While no musicalgenres will be excluded from Grammy contention, thechanges will make the awards a lot more competitive.

“It ups the game in terms of what it takes to receive aGrammy and preserves the great esteem of which it’s heldin the creative community, which is the most importantelement,” Recording Academy President and CEO NeilPortnow said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

While the Academy has adjusted its rules and adaptedto industry changes over the years, these changes followits first major examination of the awards structure, a pro-cess that took more than a year.

The biggest change will come in the number of catego-ries, cut from 109 to 78. Awards will no longer be given insuch categories as rap performance by a duo or group; someof the instrumental categories in pop, rock and country;traditional gospel; children’s spoken-word album; Zydecoor Cajun music album; and best classical crossover album.

That doesn’t mean that those types of music are ineli-gible; they will simply compete within larger fields. Portnowsaid the changes will make the awards process more rigor-ous. “That’s appropriate. We are talking about the mostprestigious, coveted award and it should be a high bar interms of the measurement of receiving that,” he said.

Separate male and female vocal categories in fields likepop, R&B and country are among those being dropped.Men and women will now compete in each overall field. That is already the case in the field of rock, which does nothave male and female vocal categories.

“A great singer is a great singer is a great singer, andsomebody that has a gift in terms of their voice, and is atthe top of their game in terms of their delivery and emo-tion, really isn’t necessarily defined by gender,” Portnowsaid.

NEW YORK — Two of Malcolm X’s daughters are unhappy that anew biography alleges their parents’ marriage was strained and thattheir mother — and possibly their father — was unfaithful.

Marable had intended “Malcolm X”as a tribute to the slain activist’s lifeand influence, but he also wanted toavoid portraying him as “a saint, with-out the normal contradictions andblemishes that all human beings have,”as the historian wrote in the introduc-tion. Malcolm X was assassinated in1965. His wife, Betty Shabazz, diedin 1997 after one of her grandchildrenset fire to her apartment.

The book alleges that parts of“The Autobiography of Malcolm X,”a million-selling classic released af-ter Malcolm X’s death, were inac-curate. For instance, Marable ques-tions details of Malcolm X’s earlylife as a criminal, writing thatMalcolm likely exaggerated hiswrongdoings.

He also looks into Malcolm X’smore controversial words and actions, including a meeting Malcolm X hadwith members of the Ku Klux Klan

in the early 1960s. At the time, hewas a high-ranking member of theNation of Islam and had discussedwith the Klan the possibility of thenation purchasing land for blacks tolive on. Malcolm X would later ex-press regret, although Marable stillcalled the meeting “despicable.”

Malcolm X married BettyShabazz in 1958. They had six chil-dren, two of them, Malikah andMalaak, born after his death. Ac-cording to the book, the marriagewas often tense, in part because ofMalcolm’s wish to have a tradi-tional, subservient Muslim wife andbecause he was away so often andhis life was often threatened.

According to “Malcolm X,”Betty became involved in 1964 withCharles Kenyatta, a close associateof Malcolm’s. Marable writes thatMalcolm, too, may have had affairs, although the evidence is uncertain.

Malaak Shabazz said there “mayhave been a little bit of stress, likeany marriage,” but that “there wasreally no times for shenanigans. Sheraised the children at home, heworked on a global level.”

Grammys drop more than 30 categoriesThe changes would appear to make it more difficult for

artists in lesser-known and less mainstream categories. TiaCarrere won’t be taking home any more Grammys for bestHawaiian music album, for example. But she could still winin the new best regional roots music album category, whichcomprises more genres.

Other changes will require each category to have at least40 entries instead of 25, and categories that receive between25 and 39 will have only three nominations instead of fouror five. If a category gets fewer than 25 entries, it will beremoved for that year, and if it happens three years in a row,the category will be discontinued and the material will finda new home in a related genre.

LONDON – In a cramped Lon-don laboratory filled with test tubes, bacteria and mosquitoes, scientistsare trying to engineer a new weaponin the battle against malaria: a mu-tant fungus. For years, Angray Kangat Westminster University and col-leagues have been testing whetherthey could genetically tweak a fun-gus to kill the malaria parasite car-ried by mosquitoes.

Now they’ve found that in labexperiments, mosquitoes exposed tothe fungus show a sharp drop in lev-els of the parasite. If it works thatway in the wild, that should make itharder for the disease to infectpeople.

Kang said the mutant funguscould be sprayed onto walls andbednets like insecticides and couldbe made for a comparable cost.

He said the asame process of ge-netic modification could also be usedto target other insect-spread diseaseslike dengue and West Nile virus. Theresearch was done together with sci-entists at the Johns Hopkins Schoolof Public Health and was funded bythe U.S. National Institutes of Health.Early results were published recentlyin the journal Science.

“This is very exciting research,”said Andrew Read, director of theCenter for Infectious Disease Dynam-ics at Pennsylvania State University. He has worked on similar projects but

About 20 of the channels willpresent several hours of originalprogramming produced profes-sionally each week, while otherchannels would use content al-ready available on the site.

The launch will be phased overtime, starting before the end of theyear, and YouTube is hiring helpto implement the initiatives.

In recent weeks, YouTube wasalso said to have held meetingswith Hollywood talent agencies,

which the newspaper said weremore likely to produce deals withdirectors of production companiesthan with movie stars and other ce-lebrities.

was not involved with the fungus re-search. “It tells us that if you can’tfind something in nature to do whatyou want, you can just make it.”

Read said using the souped-upfungus might be less environmen-tally invasive than other genetic ap-proaches. Some critics have warnedthat competing biological ap-proaches, like scientists creatingmutant mosquitoes, could wreakhavoc to ecosystems if billions of theinsects are released into the wild.

With the fungus, “you just sprayit on the wall and it does its job,”Read said. “You don’t have to worryabout generation after generation ofthe stuff.”

He also said the fungus technol-ogy could be a new way of dealingwith insecticide-resistant mosquitoes,an increasing problem that has meantthe return of effective but controver-sial sprays like DDT. “With the (mu-tant) fungi, you wouldn’t have chemi-cal residues hanging around,” he said.“It would just be a fungus very simi-lar to what is already found in nature.”

In laboratory tests, Kang and col-leagues found mosquitoes exposedto the mutated fungus had malariaparasite levels about 85 percentlower than normal. When they addeda scorpion toxin to the mix, levelsdropped by 97 percent. No tests haveshown whether using the funguswould curb human malaria cases, butexperts think fewer malaria parasitesshould translate into fewer cases.

“We’re pleased at his performance. That was tremendous. He played fan-tastic,” Ferguson said of Rooney.“He’s now been more regular in hisgoalscoring, which in the second halfof the season is going to be importantto us, that’s another important one forus. He did well.” Ferguson was alsopurring at the return of Ferdinand.“The experience of Rio was fantastictonight,” he said. “The squad is get-

ting stronger.”Ferguson meanwhile cautioned

that United still had to finish the jobwhen they face Chelsea at OldTrafford next week, warning that theLondoners were still alive in the tie.“Of course they could do it. It’s onlyone goal. It will be a tight game atOld Trafford there’s no doubt aboutthat,” Ferguson said. The intimidat-ing atmosphere generated by United’sfans at the fabled ‘Theatre of Dreams’could prove decisive, Ferguson said.

“It’s an advantage,” Ferguson said.“The biggest advantage is OldTrafford. The fans will be absolutelyfantastic on Tuesday. It will be anelectric atmosphere and I look for-ward to that.” Ferguson meanwhiledenied suggestions that he had set hissights on repeating the 1999 treble.

“I said we’re in every competi-tion we’ve got to do our best,”Ferguson said. “It doesn’t matter ifyou can’t win a thing. When you goout on that field you have to win thegame — that’s the attitude ofManchester United.”
