Countess Helene Hadik Barkoczy
Countess Helene Hadik Barkoczy b. 1833. A Hungarian countess, said to have been a Freemason. The sole heir of Count Johann Barkoczy, she succeeded him on his death in 1871 in the extensive Majorat of Barkoczy. In 1860 she married Count Bela Hadik, aide-de-camp to Emperor Maximilian. She became interested in an extensive Masonic library that came with her inheritance, and being highly educated, made an earnest study of Freemasonry. She endeavoured to gain admittance as a member of the craft and through some close acquaintances who were Freemasons, was initiated in 1875 in the Lodge Egyenloseg at Unghvar, holding a warrant from the Grand Orient of Hungary. On learning of the glaring violation of its statutes, the Grand Orient instituted proceedings against the brethren who were guilty of conferring the degrees and on January 5, 1876 ordered the deputy master of the lodge forever expelled and the officers of the lodge to have their names struck off the lists. The other members were expelled for periods of three, six and twelve months. This still left the question of the Countess's standing in Freemasonry. This was resolved at a meeting of the Grand Orient held on March 10, 1876 when it held that her admission was contrary to law and therefore null and void. They forbad her admittance into any lodge under the penalty of erasion of the lodge from the rolls and requested all other grand lodges to do the same. It was demanded that she return her invalid certificate within ten days.

Countess Helene Hadik Barkoczy There seems to be small doubt that Helene, Countess Hadik Barkoczy, born 1833, was actually "made
a Mason" in Lodge Egyenloseg, warranted by the Grand Orient of Hungary. The last of her race, at her father's death she was permitted by the Hungarian courts to take the place of a son, receiving his full inheritance. In this was an extensive Masonic library in which she became much interested. In 1875 the Lodge mentioned admitting her! The Grand Orient of Hungary took immediate action on this "breach of Masonic vow, unjustifiably conferring Masonic degrees, doing that which degrades a Freemason and Freemasonry, and for knowingly violating the statues." The Deputy Master of the Lodge was expelled, the officers of the Lodge had their names struck from its rolls, and the members were suspended for various periods of time. To the honor of the Grand Orient be it said, its final pronouncement - apart from these merited punishments - was unequivocal. It Read: "1. The Grand Orient declares the admission of the Countess Hadik Barkoczy to be contrary to the laws, and therefore null and void, forbids her admittance into any Lodge of their jurisdiction, under penalty of erasion of the Lodge from the rolls, and request all Grand Lodges to do the same. "2 The Countess is requested to return the invalid certificate which she holds, within ten days, in default of which measures will be taken to confiscate immediately the certificate whenever produced at any of the Lodges.„

A grófnő érdeklődése, a tanok elsajátítására fordított tanulmányai, a szabadkőművességet támogató tevékenysége arra indította Tabódy főmestert, hogy a grófnő felvételének engedélyezését kérje a nagypáholytól.

… A rend szabályainak megszegését utólag szigorú megtorlás követte. A felvételt

A Felső-Tisza táján a XVII-ik században s a XVIII-iknak elején jelentékeny történelmi szerepet játszott Szálai B a r k ó c z y-nemzetség grófi ága, férfi-nemen, legközelebb, a f.

1875.01.07 - The countess’ application to Grand Orient
A M.: N.: O.:hez. Rég óta kívánságom a szabadkőművesi rend tagja lenni. Ezen körülményt ajánlván a M.: N.: O.: tisztelt tagjai figyelmébe, bízva várok kedvező feleletet e kérlevelemre.

1875.12.02. – lodge minutes in Ungvár
E kérdésekre őszinte t.:i nyilatkozatot vár, és felhívja azokat, kik e felvételnél jelen voltak: adnák elő a felvétel hogyan történt.
E felhívásra a titkár a következő feleletet adott:
K.:f.:m.: k.:tt.:! Én ki jelen voltam azon munkában, melyben f. év. Nov. 11-én Hadik-Barkóczy Ilona urnő felvétetett, bátor leszek előadni a felvétel egész történetét:

5. WM are asking the : do you know about initiation of Helene Hadik-Barkóczy recent year Nov. 11? How happened this? By who and who were present?
The secretary‘s answer :
I was here, I know everything:
At the request of deputy WM Géza Mocsáry, Me and 10 brothers participated in initiation.
The motivations were the next: We must save the countess from madness; using her talents for common good . No explicit exclusion of women in our constitution and the grand lodge will accept if he (Mocsáry) will ask.
So, the initiation completed duly. GM Pulszky was here as a guest, so we all taught everything is ok.

Declaration of dr.
– E kérést egyszerűen visszautasítottam, s a kért aláírást megtagadtam.
8/12 1875 Demjanovich Iván s. k.
(I have got a report about potential madness of the Countess but I rejected signing it.)
66

The main factor of the attack against our Scottish Rite Order: Ferenc Pulszky.
Pulszky’s assistant is the profane V. (Gyula Vezerle)
Géza Mocsáry led astray our brothers purposely.
He made a false AE diploma as deputy WM.

The other brothers punishments will be strict but fair.

Reaction of St. John GL– Pulszky’s chair is empty for a year
… az összes tisztikar lemondása folytán megejtett választások alkalmával a nagymester állomása egyelőre be nem töltetett, a nagymesteri teendők vezetésével azonban ideiglenesen a helyettes N.: M.: Berecz megbízatott.
Ezen határozatban igen tapintatos megoldását látjuk a Hadik-Barkóczy ügy folytán a két nagyhatalom közt tényleg fennforgott feszültségnek…
