Shirley Bell's story with the Northern Jets With Women~ Rovnd/Jelngcelebrotedacross theAFL this weekend, we look at the contribution of Northern Jeu secre·

tary Shirley Bell. By James Matthey When Shirley Bell was a child, she used togo to the local football ground every weekend to watch 10 father play. As the years went on she performed that same weekly ritual, looking on from the sideline as her brothers, then sons, and then grandsons took to the field with a sherrin In hand. ' It's always been part of my family. my dad played, my bro1hers played and 1hen our sons and now our grandsons, so I've always come to the footy,' said Shirley. "We just went and watched footbail locaily from an early age and then as your kids grow up they take on the game and you're still going to rootballl' However, for from belngjus;t a spectator, Shlrlcy has become one of Rivcrlna football 's most loyal and devoted seNants, currently In her 20th year as a football adminlstra• tor ln one of the state's AFL hot•spots. With V.'omen's Round set to be celebrated in the national AFL competition during this week's Round 14 encounters, it seems only fitting that Shirley's efforts are given the recognition they deserve. Shirley began her administrative life In football as secretary of Ariah Park Mirrool Football Club. a position she held for 10 i,ears before the club merged with Ardlerhan to form the moniker they play under today, the Northern Jets. Shirley continued in herrole as secretary of the Jets, who are currently celebrating their 10th year In the Farrer League. It was a passion for football nowing through her veins that Inspired Shirley to become Involved in the life of her club. •1 suppose I was Just into country football because our sons were in football from the Juniors and then went through to the seniors, so you're always Interested In what area your family's intereSled In,' said Shirley. ' Then I got onto the committee and after that they were looking for a secretary so that's when that part started. ' I like 10 be Involved with the young people and keep the club In the district because It Is a part of our small towns. ' 1f you didn't have your football clubs, both Junior and senior, there would be a big gap In ourtowns. 'They've been a big part o f small country towns all along.• If anyone is qualified to give an assessment of Shirley's contribution to the Jets, It Is President Terry Walker, who has known her since he was a boy playing in the same sides as her sons, often going away on holidays with the Bells. ·we grew up with the family, we went water skiing as

families together for years and years, certainly I was arou d her growing up," said Walker. n Walker knows better than most how Important Shirley's work Is for the survival of the Jets, praising her for often going above and beyond the call or duty to ensure t hat everything at the club runs smoothly. 'It's unreal the amount of work that she does, she does too much, more than a normal secretary would do. 'B.lslcoily she does everything from the normal secretary .stuff to washing the Jumpers most weeks and sorting out the registrations, organizing meat fort he raffles, you name it and Shlrlcydocs I~ she's just an Incredible worker for the club. •whenever there's: anything that ne<?-ds doing, she does It I can't praise her cinough for the amount o f work that she • does. •she takes on too many roles ... she plc:ks up the slack.• When asked what keeps her coming back year after yea,, Shirley's typically selness response is that she loves seeing the development of the young people within the com munit y. ·1 do enjoy the involvement with the younger people. getting to know all the younger players. •Ir you're part of it you get to know them all straight away, you front up to them with a clearance form or a registrat ion form or they need a pair of socks, and you get to know them straight away. ' I enjoy that part in terms of what you're doing for your own club and your own town. 'You get to know the players and there have been quite a lot that have stayed with the club and gone right through and played all theirfootball here." Walker said a genuine love of the game was also a major reason why Shirley has been able to give 20 years or her Hre to Arlah Park Mirrool and the Jets. 'Shirley's grown up with it and that's why she loves it. she's grown up watching her boys play now she's watching her grandsons play. She loves her footy. 'People say'whydoyou do It?' and she Just generally loves doing It, she likes being around the club and I think she enjoys everyone·s company and It keeps her young.'

In a week when women's roles In football will be highlighted more than usual, Including an historic all-female clash between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs as a curtain-raiser to the men·s game at the MCG on Saturday night, Shirley says that the work women do for clubs, while just as Important as the Jobs done by men, orten goes unnoticed.

AFL Women's Round __ -~__./ . . . y p Season is celebrating the women who make the game great. Those who play it and watch it. Those who work in it. Those who wear their footy jumpers to every formal occasion. Those who know all the words to only one song. The larrikins, diehards and footy t ipping experts. Round 14 is AFL Women's Round."! AFL NSW/ACTis proud to support the national initiative to celebrate Women's Round this week, and is encouraging community leagues and clubs to recognise and acknowledge all women involved in Australian Ru les football. AFL NSW/ACTGeneral Manager Tom Harley said this year's Women's Round gives the football community on all levels the opportunity to recognise women who are involved in the game as expert foot y fans, journalists, administrators or players. "Women play a vital role in the football industry, and we could benefit from more of their involvement across the board," he said. "Whether as fans, players, broadcasters or coaches - the perspective and diversity of thought that women bring to the sport should be recognised and va lued every day. "I think there will be significant positive change in our game that stems from increased female involvement." Nationally, the highlight of the round will be the inaugural AFL Women's Exhibition game that will be played as a curtain-raiser on the MCG at 5.10pm, Saturday June 29. An initiative of the Melbourne Football Club, the match between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs will be the first time AFL clubs have competed in an AFL sanctioned women's match. Teams w ill be playing for the Hampson -Hardeman Cup which recognises Barb Hampson and Lisa Hardeman who were pioneers in

p Championships more than fifteen years ago; contested between Victoria, Western Australia, South Australia and the ACT. Now NSW, Queensland, Tasmania and Arafura have joined, reflecting the truly national participation in female football. The teams were selected at the historic first Women's Draft conducted on May 15, with two NSW players drafted to the Melbourne Demons. Stand-out NSW state player Courtney Gum, from UNSW-ES Stingrays, was selected at pick 25; while Sydney Uni defender Jennifer Lew was selected with pick 35. Gum was recently named in the 2013 All Australian side following the 2013 AFL National Women's Championships held in Cairns 17-22. The thirteenth championships included eight teams across two divisions. Victoria won Division One defeating Western Australia while the ACT defeated the South Australia to win Division Two. With the highest number of female Auskickers in the country, record numbers of schoolgirl participants and a growing Youth Girls participation base, the future of female football in NSW and the ACT is looking bright. Our talented females continue to shine at the highest level completing the pathway that our youngest Auskickers are only just starting.

Key Women in Football stats • 136,133 female participants - including NAB AFL Auskick, club and AFL 9s • 12,019 female NAB AFL Auskick participants • 35 per cent of club members are female • 5500 coaches • 2000 umpires • 35% of Australian football volunteers are women

This wee m ear , one o our most we nown and well liked umpires, achieves a significant milestone in umpiring his 350th first grade game. Tim started boundary umpiring when he was 16, did his first junior central game later that season and made his first grade debut the following year. Tim initially began umpiring with friends and continued umpiring after he realised that as a player he was never going to reach any great heights. He enjoyed umpiring and saw that with all the rewards and opportunities there was a chance to progress further and stay involved longer. Tim has umpired in all capital cities except for Perth and Darwin and been able to travel to many other places. Throughout the whole time he has met lots of great people through football, many of which are still great friends. As Tim says "Why wouldn't you want to umpire, the positives far outweigh the negatives: Tim keeps umpiring now because it's a great way to keep involved in sport, keep fit, and interact with a great local footballing community. Tim enjoys the chance to help out the future generations and be involved in the development of Junior's involved with the game. This gives him

great satIs act on from helping local sport prosper and grow, but mostly continues to umpire because of the great friendships and camaraderie shared within RUA group. Tim is well supported by his family and he is very grateful to Nicole, Louis an reward is that umpiring invariably allows them a family holiday which they all get to share, so for the sacrifice as family they all make during the year, (as football is most of the year) they thankfully get to share some reward together. This week is women's appreciation round. There are many ladies who not only play or umpire football, but provide enormous support for the club. I'd like to thank all ladies in the football/ netball community for your invaluable input into our game.

Temora Last Saturday The Roo's took 6 netball teams & 5 footy sides on a road trip showcasing what a strong, united family club we are. Senior & Junior Clubs combined ,with every side playing with a love of their game. The Boys won everything, t he girls lost one. To say we have a fantastic culture & loyalty abounding, is an understatem ent. To ALL players, supporters, coaches, support staff & our committee : take a bow! Som e clubs should take a look at what we do & transcript this into their own codes of conduct on & off the paddock. To our games last week. Our Senior side went to play footy, did so despite the "attention" from the opposition. The tall poppy syndrome was evident. We were "hunted" b ut to our Roo Boys credit, stuck it out playing FOOTY & winning! Best on the day were talented bra's Adam & Dan Reid. Gu nzy, Rambo, Chris Macca & Charlie Vallence all dedicated to the footy. The Reserves continued their undefeated run winning by a few goals(l 6).Great to see Matt Harmon have a skillful game along w ith Benji's Dad, Adam Goodfellow. Dougie ,Ross Jefferies, Steiny & Ollie also showcasing their talent. The under 17's had possibly their best win this season. MCU travelled to Nixon Park facing a Roo side still hurting from the week before.

Notes The young Roo's turned it on to win by 7 pts. Daniel Leary led the way kicking some vital goals. Jack Irvine dominated. Angus McRae, Tyler Moye & Paddy Walker also huge contributors. Netball: The C Grade girls burnt the court up winning by a massive 50. Little mumma Belinda Gilchrist honored w ith both the coaches award & BOC. The B's also had a day out w inning 56 to 13.The center court dominated with speedy & well timed passes. BOC shared by Elle Warren & Bree Morton w ith the mum s club seeing Belinda Bushell players player mug winner. A's won 55 to 32.The girls a little slow to begin with but gained momentum as the game progressed. The shooters worked the circle well in the end in a physical 4
