Westside FC History

Westside FC was founded by Graham Holder, our current Chairman, in May 1996 and is based at West Side Church in Wandsworth. Graham travelled to the USA in 1994 with Ambassadors in Sport to coach and evangelise in San Jose, California during the 1994 World Cup. While he was there he had a vision to form a Christian football club on his return to the UK.

In 1996 this happened. With the team only having 7 players, it joined Division 5 of the Kingston & District League (KDL). By the start of the season, the team had 17 players mainly from the West Side Church youth group. In this first season the team, player managed by Graham Holder, won KDL Division 5, the Tec Cup, and the Sportsmanship Cup and were runners-up in the League Junior Cup. Not a bad start and with Dave Doran scoring 55 goals.

The club grew to have three adult mens teams in the KDL with brothers, friends and friends of friends joining. The 1st team progressed through the divisions of the KDL and in 1999/20 were Division 2 Champions and were promoted directly to the KDL Premier Division and won this the following season 2000/01.

The club decided to have a further season in the KDL Premier and apply for promotion to the Surrey South Eastern Combination Intermediate League (SSEC) the following season. Unfortunately, the plan went wrong when the team ended 3rd. Graham decided to take a gamble and transferred the team into the SSEC Junior 1 and it gained promotion to the Intermediate League in 2002/03 by winning the last game of the season against promotion rivals Warlingham.

Graham Holder remained Manager until 2008/09 and after 12 years stepped down to manage the Reserves in SSEC Junior 1. His Assistant Manager, Steve Walters took over the job of 1st team manager. During those 12 years, the club won numerous trophies – see clubs honours page - including being FA Charter Standard National Adult Club of the Year 2005/06.

Steve Walters led the first team to the SSEC Intermediate Division 2 title in 2014/15 and Division 1 the following season gaining promotion to the Surrey Elite League when we switched to playing our home games firstly at Croydon Arena and then at AFC Croydon Athletic. In 2018/19 we finished 3rd and gained promotion to Step 6 of the National Football Structure and entered the Combined Counties Division 1. We moved to ground share with Chessington & Hook United and despite a relatively good start, our season like many others was curtailed by COVID -19. Last season 2020-21 we moved to a ground sharing arrangement at Colliers Wood United FC, and again this season will be playing home games at the same venue..

Also, in 2004, the club became the first Christian team to take a Mission Tour to Senegal in West Africa. A great adventure, two years of planning and a difficult one for a Christian team in a mainly Muslim country. The tour was a great success and we returned in 2007 with an even more gruelling schedule of matches, coaching and Christian evangelism. There were some very unusual pitches and football in the jungle is a real experience! We also have connections with Romania and Sierra Leone. We believe that our original vision to be a multi team club has blossomed over the years since 1996. The club has expanded greatly since starting youth and girls’ football in 2002. Under the overall control of Jane Walters, we now have over 30 youth boys teams from U7 to U18 with teams playing on both Saturday and Sunday. All these teams have also won numerous trophies across all levels of the club – please see the honours list in our programmes. Since season 2019-20, we joined forces with Sean Innes Coaching and formed three new teams in the Surrey Youth League.

The Chairman’s view

Good Afternoon everyone and welcome to our first home game of the season at Wibbandune for this Southern Counties East First Division game against fellow new boys, Larkfield & New Hythe. Our home fixtures should have started last Saturday against Bridon Ropes but the heavy rain proved to be too much for the pitch.

I can hear lots of our supports saying “Has he got this right?” Well I have, because as part of the FA’s restructure of the National League Pyramid, we have been moved, along with Tooting Bec and Chessington & Hook United, to the SCEFL which covers Kent and SE London.

This will mean a lot of travelling for us and this started two weeks ago with an 80 mile round trip to Snodland Town and a very unfortunate start to the season going down 4-1 after being 1-0 up after 10 minutes and finishing with 9 men. The least said the better. Hopefully we can do much better today and gain our first 3 points on the board. We are approaching the SCECFL as a new challenge and one at which we can be successful.

We played our local rivals Tooting Bec last Tuesday evening at Imperial Fields who had beat Snodland Town 3-2 in their first game last Saturday and again after taking an early lead, and adding a second goal in the 25th minute, a similar pattern as our previous game continued when the hosts scored either side of half-time before eventually running out 4-2 winners.

Today welcome Larkfield & New Hythe to Wibbandune as the first SCEFL team to visit us for what we hope will be a good match and in a season hopefully, will run uninterrupted. Larkfield and all the SCEFL teams other than Chessington and Tooting Bec will also have long journeys to us.

We have quite a few new players this season as well as a new coach, Glen Nichols, joining Steve and Dean as part of the management team. I am sure that you will give them your full support. Today we welcome our officials Paul Greenfield and his two assistants, David Lambert and Kehinde Agboola, whom I am sure will contribute to a great match.

I would ask you all to remember, especially as the ground and bar are fully open to the public, that we still need to be aware of the COVID rules to ensure your own and others safety and ensure your time with us is a safe time. Remember, it is very easy to get comfortable at matches and forget the need to be sensible. Even with the professional clubs, cases still arise. Let us all, Westside FC, our opposition and our supporters still be vigilant.

I must also stress that we will not tolerate racial abuse of any kind at our matches.

Those who read my comments regularly last season will know, I cannot finish these notes without a reference to God who provides the talent that enables both r astplayers and those of our opponents to play this great game. We all hope that COVID is being controlled by people of all ages being vaccinated and will hopefully soon be reduced to a flu like illness that we can control each winter with a jab. This type of Hope is what Jesus brings to us and if we place our Hope in Him, we will be granted peace and the free gift of Eternal Life. If you need to know more talk to me or our Chaplain.

May God Bless you all, Players, Officials and Spectators.

Graham Holder

Larkfield & New Hythe Wanderers was formed back in 1961 and has been established for over 60 years. Originally the club only had men’s teams but after the merger with Larkfield FC in 2012 there are now over 30 teams consisting of men, Ladies and youth teams of both boys and girls. The club was awarded the FA Charter Community standard status in 2015 with an ethos to grow and support the club in the local Community and promote the success of all the teams. In the beginning the club played in the Maidstone & District Saturday league and in 1997 gained acceptance into the Kent County League. The club was in Division 2 East for many seasons without realising the success it strived for. A very strong team in 2016 just missed out on promotion but was successful in winning the Les Leckie Cup in a very tight game 3-2 against Rolvenden FC. In 2020 the club was promoted to Division 1 of the Kent County League, and a new Sponsor, Committee and management team was put in place to push the Club for further promotion and ultimately into SCEFL. The plan was going very well with the team 7 points clear at the top of the league when unfortunately, Covid19 brought the season to an end. However, the club was undeterred and continued to enhance the whole stadium and make our aspirations known to enter the SCEFL Division 1. The stadium was re-branded as the ‘TARAY COMMUNITY STADIUM’ and the ground was significantly improved with new seated stands, covered standing, new dugouts, pitch barrier surrounding as well as renovated clubhouse and changing rooms. Very importantly, we also received Football Foundation funding for pitch maintenance and secured the services of Scott Byers who has transformed the playing service. Additionally, the club has had new Floodlights installed replacing the old ones from 1996! In 2021, the club’s hard work paid off with the announcement we had been accepted to join the Southern Counties East Football League at Step 6 of the non-league pyramid. This is an outstanding achievement for the club and great reward for the hard work that has gone on at Larkfield & New Hythe over the past few years. History 1961 – Larkfield & New Hythe Wanderers formed and play in the Maidstone & District Saturday League. 1967 - Purchased land in Larkfield, remains current stadium location 1976 – Larkfield FC Youth formed 1976 – First clubhouse built 1996 - Clubhouse extended with Lottery Grant 1996 – First floodlights installed 1997 – Joined Kent County League 2004 – Awarded Charter Standard 2012 – Larkfield & New Hythe FC and Larkfield FC Youth are merged 2014 - Ladies section formed 2015 – Winners of Maidstone District Cup 2015 – Awarded Charter Community Standard 2016 – Winners of Les Leckie Cup 2020 – Promoted to Kent County League Division 1 2020 – TARAY GROUP COMMUNITY STADIUM renamed 2021 – New Floodlights installed

First Division Round-up - 31 July 2021

It was goals galore on day one of the First Division season with home sides coming out best, winning 7 of the 8 games played. FC Elmstead were the odd ones out, picking up the only away win of the day and impressively doing it at one of the fancied sides for glory this year. Who knew Andy Constable had another season in him? Well he did it seems, and thanks to a penalty on the half hour and a stunning strike soon after, Elmstead had a 2-0 lead over SC Thamesmead by the break. Player/Manager Aaron Jeffery pulled one back for The Acre, which set up a tense finish, but FC Elmstead held on and they start the season on an unexpected high. Three of today’s games finished 4-2. The first came between Bridon Ropes and Larkfield & New Hythe where the Jack Kensington’s double upset The Larks SCEFL debut. Croydon won 4-2 against another debutant club but struggled to get going early on before eventually overpowering a 10-man Staplehurst Monarchs. Faversham Strike Force completed the set of promoted clubs to lose 4-2 on day one of their Step 6 lives. They returned from Sutton Athletic empty handed with Arlie Desanges scoring twice for the hosts – after Faversham had twice pulled back a Sutton advantage. Stansfeld were the top scorers today, netting 5 against Greenways at Foxbury. An Ollie Milton double then Rob Hughes effort on the half time whistle gave the hosts a comfortable lead at the break. Greenways made a game of it in the second half ,and reduced the arrears through Brad Cross and Rhys Abioye, before Frankie Beale and Joe Minter each scored to put the game to bed. Lee Friend scored a hat-trick for Snodland Town as they handed Westside a losing SCEFL debut. Friend’s trio was added to by Omar El Mantawy to giving Snodland a 4-1 win and an early share of the top of the table. Rochester United were forced to do it the hard way as they had to come from behind to beat Meridian VP at Rede Court Road. Romayle Wade gave VP the lead on 65 minutes but The Spartans quickly responded, and with goals from Lucas Payne and Henry Arnold they came back to earn the win. Bradley Baker marked his return to Lydd Town with the winning goal, and only one of the game, giving his side all 3 points against Lewisham Borough.

Match Report - Snodland Town 4-1 Westside

Match report from Charlie Bradford for Non League Chronicles

Match Report - Tooting Bec 4-2 Westside Short Report from Tooting Bec

Tooting Bec came from 2-0 down to win 4-2 at home to Westside. Marlon Pinder gave the visitors a first minute lead which was extended by Ryan Smith on 25 minutes. Bec got back into the game just before the break and levelled soon after the restart through Conor Turner. Ed Mbango continued his fine early season form to put Tooting Bec in front and the game was sealed in the final minute when Turner scored his second. Two wins from two games for Tooting Bec while Westside continue their search for their first SCEFL point.

Tooting Bec 7’s Competition Report by James Richards

This was the first time that we had entered a team into the Tooting Bec 7 a-side Vets tournament

at Tooting & Mitcham United FC.

Our squad included one of the 1996/97 triple winning squad and four of the 2015/16 SSEC Intermediate Division 1 winning squad.

We didn’t get off to a great start losing 2-1 in a fiercely contested game to a Balham side whose team included ex Premier League winner Shaun Wright-Philips.

The late arrival of Scott and a reshuffle in formation saw our fortunes change as we won our remaining three games without conceding a goal.

This meant that in their final game Balham had to beat Tooting Bec by three clear goals to win the tournament on goal difference. After a nervous wait, Balham eventually lost 1-0 to Tooting Bec

which meant we were crowned champions.

1st Place - Westside FC - 9 points 2nd Place - Balham FC - 6 points

3rd Place - Tooting Bec FC - 3 points

We look forward to defending the title in 2022

The Potyn’s Sports Ground is decent for the level with a nice main stand and a smartly done up clubhouse. However, fifteen minutes before kickoff, the heavens opened and the game was played in a downpour but nothing like the biblical weather at Deal which got the game abandoned so a bullet well and truly dodged! Snodland created the best opportunities in the opening ten minutes and went close in the fifth when a 25 yard free kick by Brad Webb was straight at Westside’s goalkeeper Hobson. However, Westside arguably had the best chance of the opening spell when Snodland goalkeeper Shaun Wicks came rushing off of his line to try and clear the ball, but Smith won the race to the ball and his attempt to chip the ball into the back of the net landed just wide of the right-hand post. Snodland had a similar chance a minute later when Lee Friend saw Westside goalkeeper Hobson off his line and attempted to chip him from 30 yards but Hobson did well to paw the ball away for a corner. It was a chance Snodland were made to pay for a minute later when they fell behind when Marlon Pinder found half a yard of room 20 yards out and made the most of it before getting a quick whipped shot away into the bottom left-hand corner to give the SCEFL Division One debutants the lead. It was a lead however that only lasted two minutes, with Snodland getting an instant reply when Lee Friend ran in from the right-hand wing, jinked his way past one Westside defender and eventually lashed the ball past Hobson with his left foot from around 12 yards out. Seven minutes later and Snodland took the lead when a loose ball was intercepted by Andre Trenton who unselfishly squared the ball across the face of the box from right to left for his team mate Omar El Mantawy to tap in to the empty side of the goal. Lee Friend then had two good chances for the hosts to extend their lead with both chances hitting the crossbar. Firstly he headed a free kick from the right down into the ground from six yards out with the ball hitting the woodwork and four minutes later he brought down a free kick from the halfway line 10 yards out before swivelling on the ball and hitting the bar with his shot. These two spurned chances however did not cost Snodland as they doubled their lead in the 39th minute when a neat team move eventually saw Ted Rosetti produce a delicious half turn before laying the ball on a plate for Lee Friend to tap home from six yards out. With the second half not quite as lively as the first, the opening 25 minutes of it did not produce many opportunities of note other than Snodland’s Brad Webb having a 25 yard free kick fumbled on the goal line by Hobson which he eventually gathered, and Lee Friend shooting straight at Hobson from the right side of the box. In the 74th minute a Snodland free kick from the left caught a wicked deflection off of Zack Johnson-Read with Hobson doing well to react and stop the ball from going in. However, Hobson was powerless to stop Snodland’s fourth goal in the 81st minute when a neat cross from the left by Omar El Mantawy found the head of Lee Friend six yards out who nodded home to complete his “perfect hat trick” of left foot, right foot and header – I mean you have to be good to pull of pink (or should that be fuschia?!) boots and he certainly was on the ball today! Westside’s afternoon got worse in the 83rd minute when they were reduced to ten men. Already on a booking, Michael Tia was guilty of mouthing off at referee Jamie Turner who did not hesitate to show Tia a second yellow card and the consequent red. However, the damage was already done, with Snodland the comfortable winners.
