The Thoughts of the Chairman

We had a tremendous HKFC Citi Soccer Sevens competition in May as well as a highly

successful Professional Squash Association Tournament and the International 3s Squash Tournament. The sporting season and various leagues and competitions in a number of sports have now concluded for the summer break whilst the Lawn Bowls League(s) has just recently started.

If you are leaving Hong Kong for the summer holidays, I wish you all safe travels and enjoy your break from the hustle and bustle of our great city. For those of you staying in Hong Kong, don’t forget to make full use of our tremendous facilities such as the Swimming Pool Complex, the Fitness Centre and our Food and Beverage Outlets. A number of the Sporting Sections also run summer activities and Auskick will be running a programme through the summer months as well.

In respect of the Master Redevelopment Plan for the Club, the installation of the new Chiller system on the roof is well on target and the new Transformer Room in the Car Park proceeds apace. We continue to look to sell Corporate Subscriberships to help finance our redevelopment plans and you may well have seen advertisements, such as the one on the opposite page, in various publications such as the South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong Economic Times. If you, or your company, or anybody you know, is interested in purchasing a Subscribership, please contact the Membership Services Manager, Kerry Ogle, who would be pleased to advise you on the benefits of such a purchase.

I trust that you will all have a great summer.

From the Desk of Mark Pawley

A fter a pretty wet month in May, we are all hoping for significant improvement in the weather for June and the rest of the summer

months. If we have good weather we do, of course, expect the Swimming Pool Complex to be busy. As such, I would recommend you all, once again, to become reacquainted with the Pool Rules. With this in mind we have outlined some Pool Safety rules on the adjacent page. At the same time we have included the “Oh Poop” notice which, is pretty much self-explanatory. Suffice to say, any pool closure during our peak usage period will not go down well with others so, please do ensure, children who are not potty trained, are wearing appropriate swim nappies.

Moving quickly on to the all things food and beverage, a reminder that we continue throughout June with our Lunchscape promotion (Prime Rib of Beef and Yorkshire Pudding) in the Chairman’s Bar during weekdays and, effectively, carry on the theme at weekends in the Sportsman’s Bar on Friday evenings and Saturdays and Sundays from midday to 2.30pm and in the evening from 6pm to 10pm.

In the Restaurant in June we have the Amazing White Asparagus and Seafood promotion where Chef has come up with new menu items that combine the two products. The All You Can Eat Sunday Buffet in the Restaurant continues throughout the month as, of course, does our ever popular Sunday Brunch. And, for those of you that like a bit of a challenge we have a Beer vs Wine

Dinner on Friday 24th June where we have paired four different beers and four different wines with a specially prepared menu. The evening includes a talk from a beer expert and wine connoisseur!

In the Sportsman’s Bar, apart from the Carvery Weekend previously mentioned, we also have a Burger promotion where you will be offered a number of different buns and then you choose the one you want to go with your burger. During the month we have “Live” on screen the New Zealand vs Wales Rugby Test series, two State of Origin Rugby League matches, two Formula 1 Grand Prix, the end of the French Open and the beginning of Wimbledon!

For families we have the Poolside Buffet Party with Inflatable on the Friday 24th June. This is normally a very popular event so please do look to book this well in advance.

And, last but by no means least, don’t forget Father’s Day on Sunday 19th June where we have a number of promotions for this special day for both lunch and dinner — further details are on page 8 of the magazine.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!

The Swimming Pool Complex is a great place to be particularly when we have fine weather, but a poop accident will ruin the day for everyone. So far this year there has been a total of one poop accident at the Swimming Pool Complex resulting in total shut down of either the Main Pool or the Children’s Pool for a minimum of two hours. If your child is sick or has diarrhoea, please keep him or her out of the pool/s. If your child is not potty trained please ensure that he or she is wearing reusable or disposable swim nappies when in the pool. Reusable swim nappies or disposable nappies can be purchased at the Club Shop on the Ground Floor.Oh Poop...what a perfect way to end the weekend or holiday fun for everyone. Make sure it’s not you!

Parents: Please watch your child(ren) closely at all times. The importance of adult supervision cannot be overstated, you are fully responsible for the safety, and welfare of your child(ren).• Please ensure that you are aware

of the swimming pool rules.• Children should know what

the outcome will be if rules are broken.

• It is NOT the Lifeguards’ responsibility to supervise your child(ren).

JULY PREVIEW

JULY PREVIEW

16 Jun 2016

The winter league season has finished with the play-offs still being hotly contested to see who can win the finals.

Many HKFC Squash teams have already won silverware with much more still up for grabs in the play-off finals. The Club had a fantastic season with five teams crowned league champions. These are Division 7 (Leo Kwok), Division 9 (Philip Ting), Division 11 (Rajesh Mulchand), Division 14a (James Osmund) and Division M2A (Simon Ho). Division 8 (Alex Berriman) have also won their play-off finals.

Here is an update on how the teams performed this season.

Division 2 Ho Fai Chiu’s HKFC 2B team finished in 3rd place with HKFC 2A finishing 4th. This led to a mouth-watering play-

off first round game which 2B won 4-1. Unfortunately in the next round of the play-offs 2B played the league champions KCC 2A who eventually went on to do the double after not losing all season.

Division 3HKFC 3 convened by Elliot Froidevaux had a strong finish to the season to finish in 2nd place. They beat league winners KCC in the first round of the play-offs and are now in the final to try and win silverware.

Division 4HKFC 4 have carried forward their early season form in a tight league and finished 4th. Finishing on the same points as the team in third position. They have made it into the play-off round 1 and will be looking to make it all the way to become final series winners.

Winter League Summary

Division 5David Robinson’s HKFC 5 fought through the season well and finished in 5th place in a strong league.

Division 6Kien Ng’s 6A and Julian Tanner’s 6B team finished in 3rd and 4th place respectively on exactly the same points and the same number of matches won. In what was one of the tightest divisions the play-offs will be very close with the two HKFC teams playing each other in the 1st round.

Division 7The division 7 teams’ good start continued with them winning the league and being a full 18 points clear of second place. They will now be favourites to do the double when they play in the play offs.

Division 8 HKFC 8 finished well in 3rd position in the league. A playoff position was guaranteed and they went on to make some huge wins beating KCC, who had only lost one game all season- narrowly in the semifinals and then winning the final against Head Advance 7 to be crowned final series champions.

Division 9Philip Ting’s division 9 team had a very close end to the season but managed to win the league by 2 points. They took their form through to the playoffs first round beating Head Advance 8 but they couldn’t quite manage the double and lost in the finals.

Division 10HKFC 10 led by Robert Jones finished 4th in a very close division. They have secured their play-off berth and will be looking to take silverware back to Sports Road.

Division 11HKFC 11 had a great end of season run to be crowned league champions, finishing on 94 points. They are in the

Club Magazine Jun 2016 17

play-offs and looking to try and secure the double.

Division 13HKFC led by Damien Laracy secured a play-off place by finishing the league in 3rd place. There are some strong teams in the division but they will be trying hard to win in the play-offs.

Division 14James Osmund’s 14A swept to league victory after losing only 3 matches all season and are favourites for the double. Brian Taam’s 14 B team finished 7th and unfortunately missed out on a play-off place.

Masters Division 1 M1B finished in 2nd place pipped to the title by HKCC by one point. They got revenge in the first round of the play-offs winning 3-1. The M1A team finished in 3rd place to book their play-off place.

Masters Division 2 Simon Ho’s M2A team only lost 2 matches all season and were crowned league champions. Nick Shultz’s M2B team finished in 3rd place. Both teams are now in the play-offs and any matches between the two teams could be a lively affair.

Masters Division 3Dave Cross’ M3A team finished in 3rd place in one of the tightest divisions, to ensure their play-off place. Michael Yang’s M3B finished in 6th position.

Master Division 4The newly formed masters Div 4 finished with the M4A and M4B teams in 4th and 5th place respectively in what was a very tough league. M4A unfortunately didn’t manage to win their first play-off match so their season is now over.

Ladies Division 1The HKFC L1 team finished in 6th position in a very strong ladies division 1.

2016 Tripartite Junior Squash Tournament Alexander Chew, 2016 HKFC Juniors Team Captain

On April 30th 2016, a team of HKFC’s finest junior squash players went to HKCC for the 2016 Tripartite Junior Squash Tournament contested between the hosts HKCC, HKFC and Discovery Bay.

It was originally a “7 vs 7 vs 7” junior squash tournament, but unfortunately on the morning of the tournament we were informed that HKFC’s juniors’ No. 2 seed would not be able to make it due to illness. So HKFC juniors went with only 6.

During the tournament, HKFC juniors played to their best of their abilities. More importantly it was about having fun, making some new friends and enjoying the game. Special mention goes to HKFC’s juniors’ No. 4 seed Carlos Ng, who not only played HKCC’s juniors’ No. 4 seed and DB’s juniors’ No. 4 seed; he also played HKCC’s juniors’ No. 2 seed and DB’s juniors’ No. 2 respectively in place of the No2’s absence. Prior to that, Carlos insisted that he should play HKCC’s No. 2 seed and DB’s No. 2 seed respectively. Apparently, he’s a friend of HKCC’s juniors’ No. 2 seed and he told

me he knows how his friend plays all his moves and shots. Carlos even convinced me he wanted to play him because he just wanted to and that he thought it felt right. Well, give him credit because he pulled off a stunning victory against HKCC’s juniors’ No. 2 seed to go along with other wins contributed by HKFC junior players Carlos Ng (again), Renee Wu, Thana Fearn, Harrison Niehoister, Naomi Teng and me.

Overall, it was a truly fine performance from all HKFC juniors who joined me for this tournament, generously hosted by Rajeev (the tournament’s host organiser) and HKCC. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves as I too enjoyed the tournament.

A special thank you to the HKFC coaches and our parents who helped all of us to gear up for this tournament, especially Mr. Wu (No. 1 seed’s father)

and Carlos Ng (again) for helping me out with the photographs for the tournament as I was busy refereeing a squash match and soon after supporting my team whenever they played.

Finally, I could not ask for more from our amazing team to represent HKFC. In the closing stages, Carlos Ng won HKFC’s tenth match for the tournament which all but assured us that HKFC juniors won the tournament cup as a whole! It was a close battle between the hosts HKCC for the winning trophy but we ran out winners by a margin of 4 match wins. The final score was HKFC 12, HKCC 8 and DB 1. To the players who played for HKFC juniors in the tournament:- Naomi Teng, Renee Wu, Carlos Ng, Thana Fearn and Harrison Niehoister - YOU ARE THE REAL MVPs. Thank you!!!

Men’s Captain Report(as at 6th May 2016)

As with last year, individual team captains have been good enough to provide their own reports on their respective seasons, offering far more insight than I ever could.

A massive thank you to all these captains – Gus Allan, Harry Travers (now departed Hong Kong), Matt Truman, Andy Burwell, Piers Brunner, John Banks, Jim Dore and Quentin Burrows – and their VCs for their hard work throughout the season. This section and the teams cannot function without your endeavours, and they really are greatly appreciated. Players, a few beers due for your captain please…

I hope you all enjoy reading through the team’s report, as well as getting some sense of how the other teams have gotten on this year as well.

Yan Adams, Men’s Section Captain

A Team (2nd in Premier Division A)It has been another high quality and challenging season in the premier league this year with opposition teams continuing with their aggressive “global recruitment” strategy. The As finished strong in 2nd place for the league and at the time of writing are about to play against SSSC A in the semi finals of the Holland Cup over the weekend. This year we welcomed a raft of new players both young (Alex Simmonds, Dave Pratt, Nick Lee) and slightly older (Hein Oomens, Ben Sharples) as well as season-long imports Nicholas McEween and Nathan Bourke).

We started the season off with big wins over HKCC A, KCC A, and HKU A, however came undone in a very exciting match against Khalsa A (4-6 loss). Throughout the season, we remained strong and performed well in the majority of our games, completing the season with 16 wins and 4 losses.

The year can best be described as an experimental year for the team, where we bid farewell to a group of old teammates and welcomed the new. We had to learn and experiment with new faces, formations, and different tactics with very limited time. However, the hard work that everyone has put in as a whole have brought us much closer to the top, and we are in a great position for a shot at the title next year. Sadly, we will have to do it without long-time A-teamer Robert Todd, who returned to the UK after

almost a decade in Hong Kong. We wish him all the best!

Don Ng, A Team Vice Captain

B Team (4th in Premier Division B)We welcomed a host of new players both young and old, adding a total of eight new players to the side and started the season in high spirits. A closely fought 1-0 loss to HKFC A team followed by an 11-2 victory over HKU A (a record premier league win for the B team) was a convincing start.

With the team plagued by injury, a tough run of games against Khalsa, KNS, HKCC and SSC didn’t go our way and we stood in 8th overall at the Christmas break. Following the break we had good results against HKU and Shaheen and a 3-2 loss to Valley in the final minute that we would all like to forget about.

Our backline were solid as ever with Stu Evans and Patrick Milburn always composed in the middle and supported by the attacking flair of Joel on the right. Owen and Ravi made quite the pairing in midfield and at times our forward line led by James Hills- Ingyon and Richard Finch looked dangerous and especially so once Japhi returned from six months on the sidelines through injury.

Special mention must go to Owen and Danny for all of their wise words and passion (respectively) and to our loyal supporter Kimberly Verge

for bringing glamour to the stands. And, I suppose reluctantly, to James Fearnside’s hatrick against KCC. It’s just a shame it was a one-off.

Whilst our overall league standing was a couple of places lower than hoped the building blocks are in place for next year and youngsters James Shepherdson and Joel Bolwijn will unquestionably excel next season in their second year in the Premier Division.

Finally, as I also depart, a farewell to the Germans (Bene and Japhi), Richard ‘Unit’ Finch, Pieter ‘All ball’ Six and Dave ‘Vanilla Ice’ Martin who will be sorely missed, both on and off the field. Here’s hoping for an influx of talent required to fill this void.

C team (2nd in 1st Division)“Goals, goals, goals” is the best way to sum up the C Team’s season. At the outset, the squad decided to attack the league this year with a change in formation to an aggressive 2-3-5 (much

to Charlie Poulton’s delight). As a result, the C Team found the back of the net 92 times over the course of the league with Daisuke Nosu top scoring from centre forward with 15 goals, closely followed by Ferdinand Kuehne at left wing with 13 goals. There were contributions from all over the pitch with Matt Truman 10, Brad Munt and James Piachaud with 9 goals apiece. The C Team managed to win 18 of their 22 league games. However, two closely fought losses against eventual league winners NBC A meant the C Team finished second in the league (an improvement on last year’s third place).

In the Cup, the C Team were drawn against NBC A in their opening game – in what proved to be a very hard fought game (with 4 yellow cards) but nonetheless the most enjoyable game of the season with the C Team playing some of their best hockey. Despite the C Team going 1-0 up after 20 minutes, NBC A put away their chances and were eventual 3-2 winners. The difference throughout the season was the quality of our finishing with the C Team not quite able to take their

chances in the key games. There were numerous candidates for miss of the season, however, James Buchanan successfully eclipsed them all with one exceptional miss that was caught on camera during the NBC A cup game. There were great efforts throughout the squad with new joiners, Derek Siu, Trevor Sanderson (who only seems capable of scoring goals when lying on the floor) and Joe Donald having great first seasons with the Club. In defence, David Koker had one of his best seasons ever for the C Team, Jimmy McLaren and Stu Mayo were always at their competitive best, Martin So established himself at left back and Chris Page in goal maintained his high standards from the previous season (although his run at centre-forward in the last game of the season showed his potential as a target man). In midfield, Sam Edwards successfully managed to cut-out his infamously ineffective “slap-pass” and Nick Hawkins did some running around on the pitch. Special mention goes to Simon Archer-Perkins who played a blinder all season from his favoured position as “bench-warmer”.

As always, the C Team excelled on the pitch but performed even better off it – with great commitment at training and down the Sportsman’s. Anthony Ford will no doubt be looking to ensure that the C Team’s great banter (not always at J-Dog’s expense, despite him receiving a “Boyfriend of the Year” award half way through the season as well as the “Weight Watcher of the Year” award due to his ability to gain weight during pre-season fitness) continues under his watch, as he takes over the captaincy for the coming season and looks to guide the C Team to that elusive first place finish!

D Team (10th in 1st Division)A new season, a new team. 15/16 was the start of something big and bold, and questions were rife: bringing

together the crème de la crème of the HKFC Hockey youth teams, could we hold our own through the onslaught of Division 1? Would the ragged bunch of ‘experienced’ players get through the season and still be able to walk?

With a slow start to the season (losing 4 out of 5) against the top teams and Sukum, Chappie, Gus, Steve and Darren succumbing to injuries, the outlook was uncertain but those in the know saw the ability of the squad and the cohesion starting to form. With the more energetic version of Doug Corbel, new arrival Joel Bolwijn catching the eye, and Michael Shepherdson, Damian Tarala and Adrian Ho starting to form a useful partnership up front, we won 3 and drew 1 of the next 5, scoring 9 along the way.

Unfortunately we couldn’t keep up this momentum going into the Christmas break, nor after, suffering some heavy defeats in January in particular. The tail end of the season was hit and miss, and relegation became a proper consideration with a few close games that should have been winning results not going the teams’ way. However, the script writers had the Ds penned as survivors and they were not to be

proven wrong. Fighting to the final game with a squad held together by the perfect combination of youthful enthusiasm and wise old heads, the D Team season closed with a sweet victory over the Dutch and a favour from old foes KCC.

For most of the team this was their first foray into men’s hockey and we earned respect from oppositions and clubs across Hong Kong. We will learn lessons from this season, many lessons, but the squad should be proud of how they pulled together as a team and competed at a high level against very experienced sides. The great news is, the team will get another crack at the 1st Division next season and with a year’s experience under the belt, improvements should be made.

Undoubtedly some of our junior stars, particularly Philip Boettger, will be destined for premier league greatness soon enough but we will regroup and continue to improve into and through next season. A special shout out should also go to Shep Senior for his adopted role as team Manager and to the Robo-Hugo Druenne who was pinned and plated back together following a nasty break but kept what us Brits call ‘a stiff upper lip’ throughout. At the start of the season we declared every game would matter and it would take every member of the squad to achieve our objective. Job done!

Andy Burwell, D Team Captain

E team (3rd in 2nd Division)Having won silver (second spot ) last year, the mission for the E team was get gold. The boys got bored of skips constantly saying “this is a must win game”… “This is a 6 pointer” ... right up to the last game we could have retained silver but we ended up with bronze. SSSC ran away with the league.

The season started well enough with 3 wins on the trot. However we then landed 3 draws on the trot that put pressure back on us. Back to 3 wins again. Looking good .... But 2 losses before Xmas and 2 after meant our

mission was all uphill. We had a strong squad left over from last season but they started to crumble not from the pressure but from their bodies ! We had sick notes, Craig W out, 2 players with broken ribs, head injuries, hamstrings… the lot. The call for reinforcements was heard and we picked up two very useful additions in Christian Keegan and our German international Tassilo Schmidt.

All in all it was a very enjoyable season and we played extremely well in parts but injuries and inconsistent performances meant we ended up in third spot. After two attempts at the title the Brock-Brunner combo will step down and will allow the youth policy to take over ... wait a minute we don’t have one. I am looking forward to next season, everyone back to full fitness and a side that can absolutely win the title.

Piers Brunner, E Team Captain

F Team (3rd in 3rd Division)The F’s season has very much been one of high highs and low lows. When we were good, we were very good and when we were bad we were very bad.

An influx of players from last year’s Es (Neil Galloway, Chee Ip, Shep, Angus Davidson and Quentin Job), the reappearance of some old Fs (Oscar Poelmann, Paul Proudfoot and Rene Theil), the resurrection of Steve Smart and the retention of the core of players who’d given us an excellent end to last season led the Fs to go into the season with a renewed sense of vigour and enthusiasm. Two solid warm-up wins against the Gs and Cricket Club gave us impetus going into our first league game and a 3-1 win against Shaheen boded well for the future.

Reality then hit home, as we hit a terrible run of results from mid-September until the end of October, when we recorded 4 straight losses. This was partly due to the heat and humidity and partly due to the lack of availability of players, as work trips, guys taking kids back to school and

Uni, airline scheduling (for our pilots) and holidays took their toll. The disappointing thing was that we didn’t play badly in most of those games and in 3 of them we were 2-1 up at half time. At this stage we had 3 points from 5 games and it was starting to look as though we couldn’t buy a point and would be scrapping at the foot of the table to try and avoid relegation.

However, the advent of cooler weather, the return of many of our players and the absence of the skipper marked a turning point when we managed a 0-0 draw with Valley. Confidence had been restored thanks in part to a good dose of the hair dryer treatment from Vice-captain Lyle Williams and this led to the start of a magnificent run of results with the next 7 games yielding 5 wins, a loss and a 2-2 draw against the top of the league Punjab A, which frankly they were lucky to get away with.

Our good run was broken by a 4-1 loss to Dragons (along with Punjab runaway league leaders), but we bounced back with another 4 game winning streak, where we scored 18 goals and conceded just 1! That included an 11-0 thrashing of IUHK on the coldest day in 60 years.

Again, as the magnificent HKHA scheduling took hold and games came at increasingly irregular intervals, we managed to derail ourselves, losing convincingly to Punjab, surprisingly to DBS and then got dumped out of the HKHA Plate in our first game, before returning to form with a 4-0 league win.

At the time of writing we currently stand 3rd with our final game looking

likely to be a showdown with 4th place IAM A for 3rd place. In what has turned out to be a very competitive Men’s Div 3, I think we can regard a 3rd or 4th place finish as an extremely good result. So far our season stats are:

Played 21 – Won 11 – Drawn 2 – Lost 8 - Goal For 55 – Goals Against – 46 (21 of which came in the 4 games against the 2 league leaders) and Goal Difference of +9.

Our success this year has been down to the way we have played as a team. This has been borne out from the fact that we have had 17 goal scorers, from a squad of 25 (albeit with 2 or 3 who haven’t played more than a couple of games). Clive Miners has returned to form, being the runaway leader on 14 goals, followed by Ferg McCoig on 5 and a chasing pack in 3rd equal of John Banks, Neil Galloway, Quentin Job and Steve Smart on 4 goals each. Despite the seeming high number of goals conceded the (normal) defence of Jeroen, Lyle, Ferg, David Watt and Gilson have performed very well, with 8 league clean sheets, ably supported by Dave Gilmore and Patrick Watts (who scored his first two goals for many a long year). Tony Ng has proved a more than worthy substitute for our well-travelled Dutchman. The performances this season have been built on a very strong mid-field of Patrick Lam, Ali Gordon, Will Probert and – our rock at defence centre half – Matt Brook, with able support from Eugene Cheuk and Gordon Marsden, who also played upfront. Also a special mention to

Chee Ip who, when we were up against it, turned out for 2 games (or part of them) despite being one of our long term injured. Even Chris Grossik had blessed us with his presence during the year!

John Banks, F Team Captain

G Team (10th in 3rd Division)The introduction of a youth team policy with the D team triggered a cascade of players down the leagues, and the tightly formed G unit welcomed with open arms fresh blood from the Es and Fs.

As we started our campaign, it quickly became apparent that the ESP (extra sensory perception) upon which the Gs had successfully relied upon for many seasons would need to be replaced with a more universally acceptable brand of hockey. We couldn’t for instance make assumptions that the right wing would be permanently camped by the dugout, he may have moved. We needed to look a little further than the ball. It also became apparent that the standard of hockey in the league is continuing to rise, and on more than just a relative basis!

It took some time to adjust and find a formation that worked for us, but we did, and whilst the results may not show it we were competitive most weeks. Typically it was a failure to ‘hand in our homework’ or a momentary lapse of concentration which made the difference between victory and defeat, and we came away from most games having enjoyed the contest and knowing

HOCKEY

we had given it our best, even if the result had not gone our way.

We’ve endured some long losing streaks this season, but never once struggled for numbers as can so often be the case. With just one game to go before the end of the season we still have players keen to train and we will have a full bench for that last game, which is a testament to the spirit and character of this team.

It has been an absolute pleasure to play with and captain such a great bunch of guys this season, and I’d like to thank the team for all their hard work and commitment this year and wish us all the best for 2016/17!

Jim Dore, G Team Captain

H Team (9th in 5th Division)At the time of writing, and with one game remaining, the Hs are in 9th place (out of 12), clear of relegation having won 4, drawn 6 and lost 11.

The Hs season was one of two halves, both being more or less identical. Well beaten by the top two teams; draws and narrow losses to those mid table and some scrappy wins against those lower down and adjacent.

Overall our defence played pretty well but in common with many other lower Club teams we were generally unable to seriously threaten the opposition in their 23/circle with any consistency.

As a rule, our team, with an average age of over 50, were playing young Chinese lads of around 25 which is fairly tough! Having said that, we are the H Team and some of us are grateful that we are still able to play at all!

In general we all had a good time which is evidenced by a regular turnout of 14-16 players per game and enjoyable social activity afterwards.

Rhona Barr, Ladies Captain

Well ladies, we are nearly at the end of our season, and what a season it’s been. There have been highs and there have been lows, wins and losses but through it all fabulous team work, camaraderie and hard work.

In the various cup competitions, 4 teams made it into the semi-finals A, D, E, and F. We’re still awaiting the result of the A’s Holland Cup semi against Shaheen A, but the D’s were triumphant in a competitive game against the F’s to make the final of the Cup. E’s were unlucky losing to Recreio in the Plate semi. I wish the

A’s and D’s the best of luck, fingers crossed for more silverware!

In the leagues, the final results were as follows:

A’s 1st in the Premier B’s 2nd in Premier B C’s 4th in 1st division D’s 2nd in 1st division E’s 6th in 2nd division F's 7th in 2nd division G’s 4th in 4th division

There were some nail biting moments near the end with final standings coming down to the final games. The B’s were a few goals away from first place, D’s had to watch and wait to see how Shaheen B finished, and F’s were trying valiantly to overtake the E’s. It’s amazing to watch, players never giving up and fighting to the last second of every game. You should all be proud of yourselves this season, even if some results did not go your way. Well done ladies!

The season has come to a close for our men’s teams in the leagues.

The Wanderers won the first silverware of the season running out victorious in the all Club Yau Yee League Sixes final defeating Albion 2-0 and the Colts won the plate.

The First Team had a strong season, taking the HKFA 1st Division title chase down to the last game, following a strong run in with the highlight being a 5-1 away win against the eventual champions Tai Po.

HKFC Wanderers, winners of the Yau Yee Leaugue Sixes

Arguably this is one of the finest away performances by a Club side in recent years.

The 1st Team finished second securing a promotion place to the Premier League.

At the other end of the table, the news is not so great, as following a challenging season, Lucky Mile have been relegated to the 3rd Division being a point from safety.

Back to the Yau Yee League, the Germans who have been developing a strong team over the last few seasons pipped Wanderers to the

league title by three points.

A strong effort by Danny Beattie and the lads following a close season rebuild.

Tony’s Albion finished 3rd in the league and will feature in the YYL cup final which will feature in the next issue of the magazine.

The Colts also had a strong season finishing in the top five.

The Ladies season is ongoing and will be played throughout June.

Please keep an eye out for pre season on the website and for AGM updates from team reps.

Match ReportsAnd that’s a wrap… the 2015/2016 netball season has officially finished and what a season it was. The top 3 Divisions of the HKNA League all had girls in navy blue take the court which shows what a great season the HKFC Netball DSA has had. Whilst the Tornadoes fell short of the winner’s trophy by one goal in the dying seconds of the match, Team Captain Gloria took home the MVP trophy. And although the Whirlies were unable to get ahead of HKCC, in typical Whirlies fashion, nothing could dampen their spirits. But it was the showdown of the Division 1 final that proved to be the game of the day. With both teams coming in at full strength on the day, it was always going to be a battle to the end. And our girls managed to stay on top of HKCC bringing home gold with a 29-23 win!! This is the third win in a row for the Club girls who remain at the top of their game. Please look out for next month’s magazine – we will have all the detail and action shots from this fantastic game. It really has been a stellar season for HKFC and next year, we will be back bigger and better than ever!

Chairperson’s Report

HKFC Club crowned as Division 1 Champions for the third time in a row. Stay tuned for the next issue for more detail and action shots....

WhirliesGrand Final Match – Division 2

Whirlies wrapped up what was a great season with an unfortunate loss against the HKCC Griffins in the Grand Final on 22nd April.

The game began with a Griffins centre pass and a tug of war over who would score the first goal. After four long minutes the Griffins team settled their nerves and slotted in the first goal of the match. Whirlies quickly responded with one of their own and the game seemed likely to go down to the wire. As the quarter went on, Griffins found greater momentum in their play and capitalised on turnovers to close out the quarter with an early lead.

The second quarter kicked off with defensive pressure applied over

Club Magazine Jun 2016 29

HKFC Tornadoes, narrowly missing the trophy by one point in the Grand Final in Division 3

the whole court by Whirlies, the lift in intensity paid off for the team as they started to close the gap on the Griffins lead. Centre court players from both sides fed their goalies with lots of vision but the Griffins defence proved to be challenging to overcome in the circle. Griffins started to open up more space in the goal circle and increased their accuracy to ensure the gap remained at a similar amount at the end of the third quarter.

Despite trailing coming into the fourth quarter Whirlies finally found their rhythm and came out firing. The circle defence stepped it up a notch taking many intercepts in the goal third which were converted by the Whirlies shooters. Unfortunately it was too little too late for the side, unable to chase down the lead the Griffins set at the beginning of the match. Although finishing Runner’s Up was disappointing for the team, Whirlies celebrated hard (with a boat load of Champagne), and are going to spend the next year vying for the Division 2 League trophy!

Tornadoes

In what was a challenging and exciting season for the Tornadoes, with a few sad departures from the team, our lead up to the finals was emotional and draining. We won the semi-final and lost the

Grand Final by just one goal each. This re-enforces how close the top four teams of the Division 3 league really were but also shows how important every single goal, every single block, and every single rebound is.

As we arrived at Hong Kong Park, ready to take on the Hong Kong Scottish Pipers we were pleasantly surprised with a guest appearance from our Singapore resident Minal. It was great having an extra set of fresh legs to take to the court. The first quarter was a hard fought battle with both sides seeing plenty of the ball and scores remained close even though the Pipers took the lead. In the second quarter, everyone’s legs were getting tired (even though Queenie seemed to be running rings

NETBALL

around both shooters and still had energy to jump). Some changes at half time allowed those tired legs to be rested however the Pipers managed to gain the upper hand and went into the final quarter with a comfortable lead.

Somehow… in the final minute of the last quarter… the Tornadoes managed to pull something out of the bag and got within one goal of the Pipers. However, with all hearts racing and the first place cup within reach, time was not on our side and the final siren sounded with a 26-27 final score and the winners trophy going to the Pipers.

Playing netball is all about giving 100% in effort and determination on court. Push yourself again and again, and don’t give an inch until the final whistle has blown. The Tornadoes will be back bigger and better than ever next season.

The Tennis Society Committee selected the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation (CNCF), www.cncf.org, as its chosen charity for 2015/2016. CNCF is an international charity that has been operating for 25 years, and to date, has helped over 750,000 underprivileged and at-risk children in Vietnam and Mongolia. Its two operational centres in Vietnam and Mongolia provide shelter and protection as well as emergency medical care, rehabilitation,

educational opportunities and vocational training and job placements. The Foundation also engages in sustainable development initiatives to benefit families and the wider communities of the children it supports.

In April, 26 members took part in the Charity Cup Social Competition to raise money for this worthy cause, nearly $15,000 was raised. It was a fun and sociable event, so while there were

The HKFC Badminton Society had a series of exchanges with the Wang Zheng Badminton Academy. The Academy is headed by Yumin Zheng,

ex-China International, winner of the Thomas Cup, All China games, Asian Badminton Championships and former coach of the HK team. The first of these exchanges from the Academy included the HK Ladies team coach Chen Wang and Mong Yi Kwan from the HK team. This was followed by the Badminton Society team visiting Wang Zheng’s Annual Spring dinner, and holding a friendly match between the Academy and HKFC. Although the series of exchanges were friendly, the actual matches were extremely demanding with some very high levels of badminton on display. A special mention goes to Chloe Lam for helping to initiate the exchanges with Wang Zheng Badminton Academy.

The Petersen Texas Scramble Cup 2016 Friday 15th April on the New Course at Fanling

This year thanks to Ian Petersen’s connections to the The Hong Kong Golf Club, we were offered a

chance to play The Petersen Texas Scramble Cup on the new course at Fanling.

With Fanling being such a prestigious club we had a fantastic turnout of 36 players, consisting of 9 teams of 4 players in each team.

Texas Scrambles involve 4-person teams, with each member of the team playing his or her own ball. Each succeeding shot is played from the spot of the single best preceding shot. At least 4 tee shots were also to be used from each team member. This format allows teams to score par or sub par rounds and this event was no exception especially as each team had also been given a handicap which was calculated by the total teams handicaps and divided by 8. This handicap was then deducted from the teams gross score after 18 holes.

Each team had been carefully selected

to ensure fair play and consisted of a low handicapper, a medium handicapper and high handicapper as well as a lady player where possible.

So the stage was set and apart from a late withdrawal from a very sick Allan Hay, everyone was raring to go.

The weather wasn’t looking too great but considering the torrential rain we had seen the previous few days, we were all very happy with the light drizzle that was falling on Fanling throughout the day.

Ian Petersen’s team consisting of Ian, Rosemary Hsu, Tony Morgan and Ralph Giulianotti and they were first to tee off. Rosemary was truly the orange dressed rose among the three thorns of this group. She sank two of the four birdie putts, made another crucial save and split the fairway a couple of times after the three thorns had scattered their drives everywhere. Tony stepped up with some booming drives and the shot of the day, a 3 wood from deep rough through trees to pin high on 18. Ralph played his part and

had the knee trembling responsibility of having to take the last drive. Captain Ian anchored the team by providing most of the tee shots on the opening holes and explaining the course layout. But most of all we had fun, encouraged each other and were leaders in the clubhouse until everyone else arrived and overtook us."

Behind them were Jonny Brock, John Banks, Johnny Lam and Angela ‘Jonny for the day’ Koo. As the group with the highest handicap, matching the Queen of England’s age no less, we knew the odds of victory were fairly long (unlike some of our compulsory drives). Nevertheless we all set off with hope in our little hearts, with Angela more concerned about the potential for small, biting insects, regaling herself in a resplendently yellow, full bee-keeping outfit. This stung her straight into action, however, ripping her opening drive to reach the fairway’s edge, hammering the long putt (from a 230 yard 5 wood approach) to within 4 feet and sinking it for a par. Game on! Sadly she immediately lost her favourite

Club Magazine Jun 2016 39

tee peg on the next, which somewhat dampened her buzz, but in turn inspired Johnny Lam, whose pirouetting follow-through produced a swarm of excellent fairway-splitting drives and clutch putts with the result that we found ourselves 1 under par after 14 holes and, rather incredibly, still well in contention for the nectar. However, with the normally, big-hitting John Banks unable to control his flight-path, and so being required to hit 2 tee shots with only 4 holes remaining, the pressure resulted in a less than perfect drive, equally ‘matched’ by his two fellow drones. Fortunately our own queen bee, who had been studying the New Course maze all day, had flown off the 14th to find her favourite tee peg on the 2nd, before scrambling back to the 15th and letting fly another ripper that parted the hitherto virgin fairway, setting up the hive for what was now becoming common-place - a mere 240 yard approach shot = par secured! Another nervy drive into the rough (which the colony now felt compelled to take) a chop out and an excellent recovery with only a 3 footer to sink for par, and, as the sun began to set on a long round, everything appeared honey-coloured. Sadly we somehow contrived to miss that tiddler, despite 4 attempts, but happily that stung Banksy into action who produced two excellent tee shots, which, only because of 4 more tired/bumbled approaches to the last, resulted in our fourth bogey and a gross score of 71. With an 11

shot adjustment we finished 10 under par and in a very respectable, mid-honeycomb position. Overall a bee-utiful day out with very happy memories for all of the HKFC hive!

Third off were Duncan Spooner with Stephen Bottomley, Shuana Davis and David Watt, who reported they rolled in a good 12ft birdie on hole 1. And then fired in to 5ft on hole 2 for another birdie. Plain sailing we thought! Sadly it was a long wait until our next birdie on hole 14! Duncan also took both long drive holes but needing to manage there tee shot allocation neither were used for the competition!

A great social group of Jessica Lam, Owen Davis, Chris Meecham and Simon Cox were 4th to tee off. Simon showed great captaincy by motivating Jessica to carry the entire team for the first 4 holes whilst the 3 boys variously hooked, sliced and duffed the ball towards the hole. On the 18th, thinking we may be in the running for silverware, Owen over-ruled the captain by selecting the ball in the bunker, only to see the first player dribble back into the bunker with the next two thinning the ball over the green into the practice range. Again, Jessica stepped forward to save the team, keeping our position securely in 9th place.

The 5th team in the "low handicap" group of Chris Burley, David Gilmour, Gordon Marsden and Steve Lee not only combined

brilliantly, but also fuelled well with Heinekens at all on-course refreshment stops. Great contributions throughout from all: Steve’s super drives; Chris’s pin-point pitches; David’s clinching putts (several); and that 230-yard 3-wood and subsequent birdie by Gordon on the long 10th Hole. With a bogey-free 5-under gross we thought we’d be in with a shout ...

6th to tee off were Man Bor, William Tsui, Angie Dickinson and captained by JP Cuvelier. Apparently nothing at all to report from this team apart from the accuracy of William’s tee shot on the par 3 earned him the nearest the pin award on hole number 3.

Captain Bob McKirdy tells the story of his fabled foursome. Once upon a time a Scotsman, an Englishman, an Irishman and a Chinese lady were thrown together to produce the most formidable team ever seen in a Texas Scramble. Unfortunately the Englishman wimped out feigning flu, leaving captain Bob to lead with the big hitting Irishman James Riordan and diminutive Margaret Tsai making up a magic threesome. Rules and team handicaps were amended accordingly, to make sure that this team had absolutely no chance, but without fear or hesitation this intrepid 3-group went out to assault the course.

James was long but a wee bit erratic, Margaret was a short hitter but kept it in play and Bob was halfway in

GOLF

between being both short and erratic. This team however were not to be daunted. Margaret hit a sweet 160 yard drive to the middle on the first hole, so we discarded the other 2 and Bob hit a 5 wood to the green and after Margaret took both her putts thus showing the boys the line, the captain stroked in a 14 footer to claim birdie on hole 1. Margaret and James were a wee bit off-line on 2 leaving Bob’s tee shot to the upper apron some 25 feet from the flag and just off the green to be the choice. After 2 puts to test the line, Captain Bob stroked in from green side to be 2 under after 2 — a magnificent start!

The threesome went on to scramble pars, 2 more birdies and only 2 bogies throughout the 18 holes to record a magnificent 68 and with handicap of 10 coming off the final score, we thought we must be in with a jolly good show at net 58. But it was not to be. Other teams packed to the gunnels with pros and snakes and a full compliment of 4 hits to choose from, pipped us at the post and we had to settle for 3rd place. A tad unfair, just think how many under par we could have been if flu had not claimed the intrepid Allan Hay our 4th man.

In summation however - what a glorious team. Margaret always in play and hitting putts bang on line as directed as well as sinking one birdie and saving par twice, James on song with the big stick putting us well within reach on some of the longer holes as well as making his

share of putts and of course captain Bob occasionally knocking approach shots into the greens and sinking ridiculous putts. I would put money on this team any day of the week - tip top magnificent!

Being the event organiser I positioned our team of myself, David Lindsay, YP Soo and Kenneth Hsu on the penultimate tee off to give us plenty of time for a hearty breakfast and to hit some balls on the range before ripping the course apart, which is exactly what we did. As a team we could not have gelled any better. A birdie on the 2nd from me started the ball rolling and a chip in on the 3rd from YP further extended our lead to what was going to be a magical round of golf. Our team had worked out a great putting strategy with Kenneth going first followed by David then YP and throughout the round we all managed to sink clutch 30ft par putts to 10 feet birdies. Some great up and downs helped us keep a bogey free round and with 3 additional birdies from the team we handed Ian the scorecard with 5 under par, definitely in contention for the Cup.

Last to tee off were Dallas Reid, Don Rider, Peter Nie and Dominic Ng, with Dallas reporting the only incident of note was waiting to hit my approach shot to a blind green. After thinking I had waited long enough, I hit in a 3 wood to the edge of the green only to find the group in front still on the green taking self-congratulatory selfies on yet another one of their many birdies!

So with everyone showered and changed we were treated to a sumptuous buffet and free flow wine and beers by the Fanling catering team which really was spectacular.

The scorecards checked and double-checked and Ian took to the stage to make the prize presentations.

Men’s longest drives on hole’s 3 and 14 both went to Duncan Spooner and to Angie Dickinson on the same holes for the women’s longest drive.

Nearest pins were awarded as follows.

Hole 2 Duncan Spooner Hole 4 William Tsu Hole 8 Jonny Brock Hole 13 Simon Cox Hole 17 David Gilmour

With the fun prizes handed out, the presentation for the Cup was eagerly awaited by the players.

There was a tie for 2nd and 3rd place with Bob McKirdy’s and Chris Burley’s team both on -12 but after a second countback it’s was Bob’s team that succumbed to 3rd place, leaving Chris and his. Team to take the runners up prizes.

This years winners of the Petersen Texas Scramble by a 3 shot lead at 15 under par was myself, David Lindsay, YP Soo and Kenneth Hsu. Well done team and thoroughly deserved.

A quick collection of drinks was gathered immediately after the presentation as libations for the hour-long bus ride back to the club.

What a fantastic day of golf, great format and company and thanks again to Fanling for being such a wonderful host.

We were 2 x 4 balls consisting of myself, Dallas Reid, Jonny Brock and Duncan

Spooner.

Having decided to play a pairs, better ball worse ball competition between ourselves, we proceeded to throw our balls in the air leaving myself and Duncan to pair up against the formidable duo of Dallas and Jonny, and off we teed.

Having substituted the driving range for a hearty breakfast I was a tad unprepared to say the least as my first tee shot bobbled a mere 25 yards into the rough, with the rest of the group nicely positioned on the green it took me 6 to get into the hole, much to the disgust of my partner, 2 down straight away.

The second hole wasn't much better as my green side fats and thins scored another triple bogey. It was going to be a long day!

Luckily my partner Duncan was on form and was able to keep at least 1 point

Clearwater Bay Golf Event, Tuesday 26th April

alive per hole to keep us in the match.

Fortunately I found my form on the signature 3rd hole and never looked back. By the turn we were 2 up on the better ball and 3 down on the worse ball.

Duncan had made a fantastic job of keeping us on track on the front 9 and we then switched places with me shooting 2 under on the back 9 to secure victory over the despondent duo of Jonny and Dallas.

Terry and Lindsay Wright, Johnny Lam and Patrick Watt’s were the second group to play and from all

accounts they had a fun round playing for individual Stableford points.

Patrick managed to snap his putter in half while trying to bend it back into shape on a tree and then used a variety of clubs to putt with, and still managed to score 33 points.

Back in the clubhouse, there was an amazing lunch buffet waiting with lashings of beer to wash it down with.

A big THANK YOU to Clearwater Bay for their hospitality and we look forward to returning later in the year.

Walmsley Cup KSC South Course and Golf Society AGM Thursday 12th May

What a gorgeous day we had in store for us all, the sun was shining and although the temperature was a tad on the high side there was no

sign of the thunderous rain clouds that had been plaguing Hong Kong over the past few days.

Five groups of 4 balls and a 3 ball teed off on the quirky but still challenging KSC South Course, to fight for the Walmsley Cup trophy which is one of the oldest and lesser known trinkets in the Golf Society (GS) trophy cabinet, the origins of which are still unknown to most of the stalwarts at the Club.

Last year’s champion Cathy Neish was not around to defend her title but that said the competition was as fierce as ever with several past Club champions all vying for the trophy.

The course wasn't in the best of condition with most of the greens being sanded or just lacking grass to putt on and the waterlogged fairways from the torrential rain made the tricky approach shots even more troublesome.

As we had a quorum of women players this year we were able to hold both mens’ and women’s titles with Malou Waldie and Lindsay Wright battling out for 1st and 2nd positions. Well done to Lindsay as she scored a fantastic 37 stable ford points in her first GS event to win by 6 clear points over Malou.

In the men’s event Jonny Brock was outright 3rd position with 36 points and there was a count back for 2nd and 1st position between Dallas Reid and Terry Wright with Terry narrowly taking the championship.

Nearest pins and Longest Drives prizes went to the following players.

Longest Drive Men Hole 14 Jonny Brock Longest Drive Women Hole 14 Malou Waldie

We all headed back to the Club after the golf to witness the Golf Society AGM and for the prize presentation which took place after a great spread of food and drinks.

The Bowling Interest Group (BIG) finished the last game of the season on Thursday 5th May and we proud to announce that we are the CHAMPIONS of the 2015-2016 Hong Kong Inter-Club Tenpin Bowling League! We have been very close to winning this competition in the past and missed the coveted trophy last year to Kowloon Tong Club by only 2 points.

The second to last match this season was a nerve-racking affair against the Hong Kong Club. The team was lead by Semon Cheung with a top score of 495, Emy Clarke at 487 and George Leung at 452. We won 18 points to 4.

The last match of the league on the 5th May was held at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, with 4 points required to secure the coveted trophy. Team supporters included Henry Luy (BIG Chairman), Raymond Chan (Convener), Marian Au and George Leung. HKFC Team best scorer was Adrian Lee with 500 points, followed by Gordon Chow at 454 and Leo Yau at 453. The result was a resounding win for us at 18 points to 4.

Many thanks to all BIG members, team players and the BIG committees, particularly to Raymond Chan who coordinated with other clubs, organized the players and is an active
