The Thoughts of the Chairman

The sporting seasons are now truly all underway and I hope that all the Sections, DSA and Societies will be very successful and bring back lots of silverware to the Club.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Bali bombings and as we remember those Members of the Club who died in that tragic event, we will lay wreaths on the 12th October 2012 with a ceremony at the Octagon at the bottom of the tunnel. In addition, there will be a Memorial Service in London and the Club will be represented by Alan and Adie Brown and John Molloy with Jeremy Summers doing a reading at the service. The Rugby Section also organised a very successful Walton Brunch with over 500 persons attending in the Sports Hall as part of the event to remember the Members who died in Bali. Some memorial rugby games were also played at the Club against Singapore Cricket Club (who also lost people in Bali).

The Annual General Meeting of the Club will be held on Thursday 8th November 2012 at 7pm in the Clubhouse Building. Please come and atttend and get the chance to meet members of the General Committee and other fellow Members. I can also advise you that I will not be standing for re-election as Chairman. Having served four years as Chairman and a total of tweleve years on the General Committee, I have decided not to stand for re-election. I thank all of you for electing me for these many years. It has been a tremendous privilege and honour for me to have served as Chairman of the Club and it is something which I will treasure for the rest of my life. The Club has played a very big part in the life of my family and I and going forward I am certain this will very much continue to be the case.

See you at the Club!

FOOK AUN CHEW Chairman

From the Desk of Mark Pawley

October brings with it, hopefully cooler and less humid times and, as the Chairman has noted, the start of most of the league seasons for our sporting Sections etc. Good luck to

“one and all” and let’s hope all the training has paid off by season end!

We have a packed food and beverage programme with a number of enticing events and promotions. Of these the two Wine Dinners on Friday 19th October and Saturday 20th October with Celebrity Chef, Sean Connolly, are very likely the highlights. Having said that, for champagne lovers the Evening with Mr Cattier on Friday 12th October also looks very good, so “decisions, decisions”!

In the Restaurant we have an “autumnal” look with recipes designed around the season. Of course the Sunday Brunch is still going strong and on Sunday evenings we re-introduce the Mediterranean Seafood Dinner Buffet. In the Coffee Shop it’s “All About Hairy Crabs” where we have created a special menu, and at weekends (Friday and Saturday evenings) we have the Hong Kong and Macau “Street Food” Buffet Nights. Don’t forget too, the popular Wine Carousel in the Chairman’s Bar and, of course the in the demand Chairman’s Bar Express Set Lunch menu. And, in the Sportsman’s Bar on Wednesday 17th October we bring back the “Quiz Night”. Get your teams signed up now!

It has once again come to our attention that some Members may be bringing “Private Tutors” onto the Club Premises for their children to be taught. If this is the case then please be aware that this is strictly not allowed under the Club Bye-laws: 3.6 Restrictions (10).

I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!

Each summer the Squash Section organises a Summer League event to give members a chance to stay fit

over the long summer in preparation for the next Winter League season. This year is no exception and we registered a record number of 110 players (48 regular players in 8 teams and an additional 62 pool players)!

Similar to past years, the tournament is separated into the regular season and the playoff. The teams played a round-robin once a week for 7 weeks starting 3rd July for the regular season, followed by the playoff semi-finals and the finals in 8th week. The playoff finals were concluded on Saturday 25th August with the teams battling for the Cup and Plate Championship and, true to our tradition, the team that came last was presented with the much dreaded “Wooden Spoon” award.

The winners are:-

Double League and Cup Champions: Team Kick Ass (Convenor Elliot Froidevaux; Teammates Karen

Lau, Andrew Town, Jukka Hakli, Edward Wu and Steve Gollop)

Cup Runners-up: Team X-Men (Convenor Adrian Long; Teammates Ben Lloyd, David Naville, Vinod Harjani, Maarten van der Steen and Mike Wood)

Plate Champion: Team Incredibles (Convenor Kien Ng; Teammates Jon Pipe, David Fitzgerald, Simon Ng, Martin Wright and Julie Savoie)

As for the Wooden Spoon, with Team Incredibles coming dead last in the Regular Season, it had their name written all over it. Kien’s Team somehow managed to pull off 2 victories in a row in the Playoff over Team Avenger and Team Ninja Turtles to win the Plate Championship! At the end, it was the second last team in the season, Team Watchmen, which lost to Team Avengers in the Finals and collected the Wooden Spoon.

SQUASH

BackgroundBefore taking a serious interest in squash, Phil played county football from 10 to 15yrs old, playing alongside Jamie Redknapp in the regional team under Jamie’s father Harry Redknapp. He also played alongside and trained with football legends Peter Shilton, Kevin Keegan and George Best.Phil started coaching at 15 yrs old in the UK and his first coaching job overseas was at 17 yrs old in Marbella, Spain. There, he won the PSA event, the Marbella Open. Upon returning to England he worked at the Ringwood Club with David Llyod. He then went to Australia for 5 years.

Finding China and the HKFCHe first came to Hong Kong while his father was living in China. He started a few coaching sessions at the HK Squash Centre and then at other sports clubs in Hong Kong (some so small that most people would never have heard about, and quite a few are not in operation anymore). Then 15 years ago he joined HKFC as an employee coach but later was contracted under his own company, Blade, which manufactures squash apparel and rackets.

Q: What changes in the Club have you seen?

There has been many changes in the Squash Section committee which is good for fresh ideas and many are new members. Courts have always been well maintained, and now that we have two exhibition courts, it really opens up the spectator involvement in Club events. The Club has such a good reputation and good facilities that there is always a fierce competition to become a Member.

Q: Did you have a world PSA Ranking? My PSA world ranking was 140 at 29 yrs old. I worked the circuit for 1.5 years but kept my coaching job. During this time I played in Spain, Finland, England, Hong Kong, Australia, Austria, Germany and New Zealand.

Profile of Phil Head (HKFC Squash Coach)

The schedule was quite intense and time consuming, with training at the Shatin Sports Institute for two hours every day for 6 days then one or two events for PSA a month. It was a very gruelling regime. The purse within the PSA was never very high and so it was never done for financial return but more for good fun and personal achievement.

Q: Most memorable achievement?Winning the first doubles tournament with Glenn Hitch in Singapore 12 years ago to beat the holding champions, and winning the Bangkok doubles 3 times in a row.

Q: What do you get out of coaching?I think I have a talent for this and that I’ve found my vocation. It makes me really happy to coach. There are not many people who can combine their own hobby with work and go to work each day and enjoy it.

Q: Preferred age group that you teach and why?Juniors without a doubt! It’s all about the kids, my own as well – watching them improve while growing up and continue to enjoy the game. I particularly remember two 4 year olds, who showed a raw talent for the game, one in Hong Kong and one in Spain now. Neither had ever played before but immediately showed an instinct for the game and are keen players now.

Q: Tell me about some of the programmes that you run in the Club?Ladies beginners/intermediate every Monday 5.30 to 6.30pmTuesday Boot Camp 7 to 8 amWednesday Junior Beginner group 4.30 to 6.40pmFriday Junior League Training 4.30 to 7.15pmClub Nights twice a month and private coaching throughout the week.

Q: What are your thoughts on the 2020 Bid?I think every squash player is behind the bid, the majority of players can’t believe that squash isn’t already in the Olympics, so I will be doing my bit to promote the sport as much as possible. The Club will be hosting its second PSA event in March so we can all help to get behind this event and show our support.

Q: What of your own future?Masters Golf Tour (plays off 4) Hit Albatross (three under - was two on a par 5)! But for the foreseeable future to continue enjoying and teaching my favourite sport – squash.

A Grand Slam Plan: Annual Charity Squash Tourney Looking To Set Another Fundraising Record.

The 14th annual Wing Ding squash tournament will once again take place on the 24th November at the Hong

Kong Football Club Squash Centre to benefit Operation Santa Claus (OSC) -- the holiday appeal that is celebrating its 25th year of helping charities throughout the region.

Last year’s Wing Ding collected an astonishing HKD$1,512,461.42 for OSC. The tournament tally set a new high for the Wing Ding, casting it as a Top 5 OSC Corporate Donor and contributing to OSC’s 2011 record-setting haul of HK$17,498,462 for 16 local and area beneficiary groups.

Over the past 24 years, the OSC fundraising initiative – overseen by RTHK and the South China Morning Post -- has collected HKD$170

million for needy causes. Since 2004, the Wing Ding has been proud to partner with the fundraising initiative, raising a total of HKD$4,241,416.42 for OSC and underprivileged Hong Kongers and mainlanders.

While satisfied with past efforts, organizers are counting on fellow Wing Dingers to contribute even more this year.

“Our record speaks for itself but we can speak with a louder voice by digging deeper and encouraging our family, friends and colleagues to support the event through donations, “ said Tim Everest, a Wing Ding organizer.

Operation Smile, an international organization that provides free surgeries

to children suffering from facial deformities, was one of last year’s beneficiaries, and directly felt the impact of OSC and Wing Ding generosity.

In a letter to Wing Ding organizers, Sir David Akers-Jones, Operation Smile’s Chairman, and David Wong, the group’s general manager, praised Wing Dingers for their contributions while informing them that their kindness has helped fund 300 cleft lip and cleft palate surgeries in southern China.

“Thank you again for helping us create a world with many more beautiful smiles,” the pair concluded.

As mentioned above, this year’s Wing Ding is planned for Saturday 24th November, at the Hong Kong Football Club Squash Centre. There, 14 ten-player teams will don outrageous costumes while facing a full day of wild and demanding squash.

Every contestant must play for nearly 40 straight minutes – playing a challenger for a few minutes before dashing off to a new court and going up against a new opponent.

Along with the one-day tourney,

a number of side events are being planned, such as the mini Wing Ding, which took place at the Kowloon Cricket Club in 2010, and the Squash Ball and Quiz Night functions, which were organized by the HK Cricket Club in 2011.

“Sport can and does awaken hope where there was previously only despair,” Everest said. “The Wing Ding squash tournament really does bring this message to life as it brings people together in one big act of goodness for those in need . . . Anyone is free to take

part in the Wing Ding either as a player, donor, or helper.”

For those interested in attending this year’s Wing Ding, making a donation, or providing prizes for the raffle or special prize auction, please contact Tim Everest at [email protected] or +852 9104-6383.

The Wing Ding squash tournament started as a way to celebrate the life of YUEN Kam-Wing “Wing”, an inspirational, physically disabled Urban Council Squash Centre employee who passed away in 1998.

Captain’s Call

Super September certainly launched us into the season…

Following the Club sevens team winning the Hong Kong Scottish Festival, we followed up with a pre-season tour to Singapore that saw us defeat the reigning Singapore club champions Bucks in both matches, leading on to the Bali Memorial weekend. We hosted a huge contingent from Singapore Cricket Club for a full day of matches from under 6’s to the nearly 60’s of the Contemptibles, followed by the fabulous Walton Brunch with over 500 people in the Sports Hall taking on the challenge to “drink the club dry”!

The playing squads have taken shape over the month, with the most incredible fight for starting spots right through all the teams and every player raising their fitness, commitment and drive to new levels, which is sure to bode well for success in the league season.

The new kit looks fantastic, the gym and junk boys are loving the tight singlets, Select and Sequins are happy to not have figure hugging shirts and the Contemptibles are delighted to be back in all cotton traditional shirts, although how anyone can play in 30 degrees with heavy sweat soaked shirts is beyond me…

We are in fantastic shape for the season ahead and I want to thank the following people for all their efforts during the summer and pre-season to get us in a position to go for a sweep of the leagues and a super social scene in the year ahead: David Nazer, Rob Naylor, Kat Holden, Ant Phillips, Colin Wong, James Thomson, PT McGee, Bill Morrison, Alex Duperouzel, Kevin Taylor, Kim Kan, James Cook, Sean Purdie, Tom DeLuca, Emma Tsang, Kevin Brown, Euan McLeod, John Molloy, Hone Patrick, special mention to Derek Titterington, Gaz Wilde and Ali Frost for taking on roles after injury ended their playing days and of course Mr. Chairman, Damian Babis. That’ll be the last you hear of these chaps, as the next 6 months is all about what happens on the pitch, but they will still be working hard to ensure we are the best rugby club in Asia.

In other news this month, Vandals Tour legend Sean Purdie celebrated his 50th birthday, but promises that he will continue to lead us on end of season tours to the wildest parts of Asia.

Well done to Guy Payne on leading Hong Kong A’s to a victory in the series against the Philippines with ‘old man’ Ant Phillips, Stew McGraw and Hone Patrick all making their international debuts.

Finally, congratulations to last season’s championship winning Scorpions captain, Callum Nieto and his wife Marie on the arrival of twins Maximus and Orla. Good luck with getting sleep!

Cheers, Livo

Singapore Sling! We were going to Taiwan, then Bangkok, then KL, before we finally decided to return to Singapore to take on the Singapore club champions, Bucks, as the first competitive games of the new season.

The strength in depth of the playing squad was highlighted with 54 players traveling to Singapore in order to stake their claim for a place in the Performance Squad that will be the basis for the Newedge Club side for the year.

The squad played two games with the Newedge Dragons smashing the Bucks 2nd XV 53-7, as a number of players put in big performances to remind Head Coach Rob Naylor that they wanted a spot in the Club XV.

The headline game between Newedge Club and Bucks highlighted that it was very early in the season, as the Club side played in a disjointed manner during the first half, before starting to show the potential of the side in the year ahead by playing strong flowing rugby to eventually run out winners 45-23. Standout performance from Jamie Chapman on debut at flanker and the Grand Final winning centre combination of Lloyd Jones and Jake Phelps.

For more information on how to support this great campaign, go to www.movember.com or contact Hone Patrick at [email protected]

Man up in Movember! The men of HKFC rugby will drive an inter-club fundraising competition for Movember, an annual global men’s health initiative to raise money and awareness for prostate cancer. 2012 marks the first year that Movember will officially be launched in Hong Kong, with donations going towards local prostate cancer research and survivorship initiatives.

As the fastest growing form of cancer in HK, we are asking all the rugby lads to proudly grow moustaches during the month of November, we’re hoping all members of the HKFC Rugby Section will be putting away the razors and showing off their ‘Mo” to support this fantastic cause.

And not just the men! WAGS can also get involved in the campaign by becoming a “Mo Sista” and raise money for their man.

Movember will culminate on Saturday 1st December with a marquee day of festivities.

Wayfoong! As two of the great institutions in Hong Kong, HKFC “Club” and HSBC “The Bank” have strong links stretching back into the distant past. Over the years these links have delivered many a fine player to Hong Kong and the Club, a tradition that continues to this day. Rugby has always been at the heart of this special relationship and every year “Wayfoong” lays down the challenge to “Club” in playing for the Kim Robinson Trophy.

This year marks the 48th year of the contest, which is being played on Monday 22nd October, the night before a Public Holiday in Hong Kong, providing the perfect timing for a big crowd to come down for a game of rugby and the opportunity to meet old and new friends in the bar.

Tales from TourI know “what goes on tour stays on tour” but we have such a fine touring tradition going back more than a century, that I think we should share some of the great stories from those grand old tours (those that are suitable for a family audience!)

details online at www.HKFChockey.com, so please do so (click on the orange button on the top right hand side of our home page). You might also want to check your spam filters and junk mail or just add [email protected] to your address book. I would like to thank Lydia and the four people that put their charities forward, Pia Wong’s Bring me a Book, Jojo’s Hong Kong Cancer Fund, Michael Vrontamitis’ Kely Support Group and Christina Matula-Hakli’s Vision First. We are looking forward to supporting the Hong Kong Cancer Fund in the upcoming season.

How can you help our Section charity? Easy, just go to our home page and reserve the date for this year’s Christmas Fancy Dress party and then confirm your attendance with your team’s social secretary. We will do the rest by putting on a cracking bash at which you’ll have the opportunity to contribute whilst getting pissed with your mates and having masses of fancy dress fun, can’t argue with that can you?

S.H.A.G.S.: have I caught your attention? A splendid piece of brainstorming led to the establishment of our Supporters Hockey Away Games Society. We have decided to try to get better support for our away games, no more playing at King’s Park packed with only the red and black of Valley RFC or the green of Pakistan or orange of Khalsa, it’s time to bring on the blue and white. So any team that has an away game and wants to get supporters together should contact their section captain and we will pay for a SHAGS bus and modest ‘refreshments’, all we need now is someone

to bring trumpet, drums and clashing cymbals and then we will not rest until we have built Jerusalem here, but I digress.

Speaking of faraway places like King’s Park or Jerusalem come to that, a word on touring! The committee and myself would like to encourage you to tour, that much is well known! This year we would like to encourage you to take your team on tour, so why not have a conversation with your team mates and see if you can all target a tour together: Ho Chi Minh or Bangkok anyone? If your team decides to tour, please let the committee know so that we can help with funding your tour.

A note from me would not be complete without a word about umpiring for both the men and women. I have been impressed by the contribution of some players and some captains towards the goal of having HKFC umpire all its own umpiring commitments. Compared to where we were only two years ago we certainly have more people that have sat the theory and more that have passed the practical, I am grateful to all of you that have made the effort thus far. However, we are still struggling to get more of you actually to umpire HKFC commitments and this year this will change. Your captains will be asking you to umpire maybe only as few as 2 games a season. This is not a lot of games and it forms part of your commitment to the Section if you still have part of your 4 years to serve. The more people that are prepared to umpire, then logically the less games we will all have to do in total over the season. So please support your Captain, your team, and your sport by giving something back through umpiring. I shall be doing exactly that myself this year too. If you are worried about the standard of your umpiring, then volunteer to cover matches in lower leagues or request a more experienced umpire to help alongside you in the game; it’s not that difficult, I promise!

Enough from me; train hard, play hard and win! See you in the Sportsman’s.

Charlie, HKFC Hockey Chairman.

Ladies Captain

Welcome to a brand new season!

After a long and hot summer break, we’re back in the swing of things for our 2012/2013 season. As I write, social secretaries are putting together the final touches for our pre-season get together with the seemingly impossible challenge of topping last year’s pirate pool party!

We had a great turnout for our first trials weekend, with lots of keen, new players ready to give us a run for our money. A few shuffles are bound to happen along the way, with teams looking stronger than ever.

The F’s officially kick-started the HKFC campaign at the Ladies Centennial Competition hosted by Club de Recreio against their

Club Magazine October 2012 21

Standing on the Shoulders of GiantsAfter all the success of last season and the great strides forward we have made in the Men’s section I would note firstly, that Rob Wilkinson did a great job over the last few years and secondly that it makes it easier for those who follow. In the off season, we are undoubtedly busier than we are once the squads are set and Captains take up the strain with the start of the leagues. Stephen Bottomley, our tireless convener, has been fantastic - handling a mountain of work with the HKHA with regards to the correct registration of all the players. This is a very difficult and time-consuming exercise, which resulted in us ruining Stephen’s summer holiday, for which I beg his forgiveness. Thanks also to his daughter Clare who helpfully bridged the gap between Europe and Hong Kong.

Stephen is not alone. Chairman Charlie has had a full workload as have Chappie and Membership Secretary Andy Dale. Another who deserves our thanks is Claire Archer for all her work with the new kit. It’s no easy task!

As I write this article I’m twitching with anticipation (or perhaps I’ve just had too much caffeine this morning) for our first league games this coming Sunday - I can’t wait! The pre-season has been solid and we should hit the ground running – hopefully marking up some early points. As Section Vice Captain, Lou ‘tick-tock’ Man says “three points at the start of the season is the same as three points at the end of the season”. Can’t argue with that. Not entirely sure I understand it, but hey, absolutely!

In the off season we have managed to recruit some new blood into our Premiership and First Division sides, which should ensure greater competition for places in the A’s and that the B’s and C’s enjoy more success this season. We are looking to redesign the D’s - where Chappie will be playing his hockey this season - and build them back into the Division One team (they surely are) for next season. The E’s have taken on the mantle of being the gateway for young players being developed in the Junior section, where Neil Galloway, Robert Barker and Simon Shepherdson have been priming the pump for the Senior section.

The F Troop will be looking for a top three finish and hopefully will be joined in Division Three next season by the G team new look, where we have sought to ignite the ambition and provide the personnel to win their league. Flames that will be fanned by the new Captain, Jim Dore, and squirted with lighter fluid by the irrepressible Lou. The H’s will no doubt be looking to spoil the best laid plans of the G’s when they clash in their Division 4 derby games.

In conclusion I would like to wish you all every success as we move forward into the broad sunlit uplands of the 2012/13 season!

Set the press.

Martin

arch nemesis from last season, HKU. With a little help from the G’s, the Foxes pulled together a team of 13 - slightly less than we’d have hoped for in the 33 degree heat - however, everyone stepped up fantastically and a deflection into the goal from Lauren, one of our G team volunteers, secured us the win. Final result HKU 0 - Foxes 1, the Plate and the glory! This marks the first piece of silverware of the year; let’s hope not the last!

Regular season matches will have all started by now, and the section is looking forward to capitalising on the momentum from our highly successful 2011/2012 season by seeing even greater success this year.

Just a reminder about the Bangkok Tour on 1st and 2nd December. Get a team together and get involved – it should be a great weekend!

Cheers, Jo

Each year the HKLBA organizes and runs a bowling competition for overseas and local bowlers. The competition usually takes on the

format of a knock out singles competition on the first weekend, followed by a round robin pairs event in the following week. On the final weekend the winners and runners up in each round robin box play against each other to decide the pairs winner.

Over the years many of the world’s top bowlers have come to Hong Kong for this competition and it is a great opportunity for the top local bowlers to play against them. This year amongst the countries participating include New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, India and Malaysia.

Each of Hong Kong’s first division clubs are invited to enter a Ladies and a Men’s pair while any bowler in Hong Kong may play in a qualifying competition for a slot in the singles.

We are delighted that this year the Club Green will be one of the greens used for this competition so we will have the opportunity to watch some of these games first hand.

The Section has organized a pairs qualifying competition to decide our representatives.

The Men’s representatives will be decided by the final between Derek Wyllie and Walter Kwok, and Johnny Tsang and S.K.Ng.

The Ladies final has already taken place. This was the culmination of a great competition with bowls of the highest standard being played throughout. The eventual finalists were the pairs of Anna Clarke and Connie Wong playing against Rita Shek and Priscilla Lam. For those who came to watch this game, we were treated to an excellent final. Played over two sets, in the first set Priscilla and Rita went into a significant lead only to have it clawed back so that going in to the final end the scores were equal. Priscilla and Rita ended up winning the last and the first set. In the second set, the pattern was repeated but once again

New Name, New Sponsors New Girls Footy, New Season

Sponsors of HKFC Junior Soccer 2012 – 2013

Sponsors of HKFC Youth Pathway 2012 – 2013

Charity Partner of HKFC Junior Soccer

As we enter the 2012/2013 season, HKFC Junior Soccer has now been formally confirmed as

the new name for the HKFC Soccer Section’s programme for coaching and developing young players in the world’s most popular team sport – the beautiful game. Although we had great affection for the term ‘mini’ it just seemed to be outdated and inappropriate to describe a programme that now delivers coaching and competitive footy for players aged from 5 years old right up to the age of 18. HKFC Junior Soccer encompasses our community Junior Soccer programme available for Members and non-Members in ten age groups from P1 (Under 6) right up to Y10 (Under 15), which is open to players at all levels, plus the HKFC Youth Development Pathway, which this season will have representative squads selected by pre-season trial competing in the local FA Henderson League at

U14, U16 and U18 levels.

The other exciting news is our new sponsorship. The Executive Centre was already committed to sponsoring the Club’s senior competitive squads and has now agreed to extend that support to our Youth Development Pathway. The Executive Centre is Asia-Pacific’s leading serviced office network with 40 centres across 15 cities - all focused on addressing global business’s demand for maximum office space flexibility, cost effectiveness and productivity.

Additionally we welcome World Sport Group as sponsors of our Junior Soccer programme. As you will realise by its name, World Sport Group is closely involved in sport as a leading sports marketing, media and event management company, responsible for almost 600 sport event days and more than 5000 hours of sports programming annually, across

more than 30 countries in the region. World Sport Group was particularly attracted to being associated with our charity partner, Indochina Starfish Foundation (ISF), a relationship that is entering its second year. ISF is a fantastic organisation providing education and a soccer programme for underprivileged children in Cambodia. Our end of season 2012 tour to Phnom Penh to play against some of these children was a great success and an eye-opener for many of us. Donations of boots from parents at the end of last season have already found their way to the children in Cambodia and we will be collecting last season’s kit donations very soon. See the associated pictures with this article to see HKFC Junior Soccer kit worn together with Valley Fort rugby kit (there’s no rivalry down there!). We thank both of our generous sponsors for their support.

Yet another new initiative is our establishment of Girls only squads at Under 14 and Under 12 levels. The only reason we have not developed this before is the limitation we have on pitch space on Saturday mornings, but with the support of the Executive Centre sponsorship plus a new Girls HK Development League, we have now made a firm commitment to developing Girls youth football at the club. Naomi Greenaway, a teacher and experienced footballer and football coach, has been appointed as the Girls Squad Head Coach and we are planning coaching sessions on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Any girls, aged 9 to 13 who are interested, and parents interested in volunteer coaching should see the HKFC Junior Soccer website: www.hkfcjuniorsoccer.com or contact our Administrator on [email protected]

And so to a new season, which by the time of publication will be well underway. At the time of writing just about all age groups have a waitlist of players wanting to join the programme. Despite our exceptional facilities here at HKFC the greatest limiting factor to developing the programme further is lack of pitch space so we apologise to those players who have missed out this time around. Despite this we have continued the expansion of the programme with our Y8 and Y9 age groups retaining players who previously would have been forced to leave the programme. Also we are now competing in four major league competitions throughout the season, plus other ad hoc tournaments. As well as our competitive involvement in the FA Henderson League for youth football and our continued participation in the Hong Kong Junior League, which Head Coach Phil Cook is taking an active role in developing, we are also competing in both the mixed and girls’ divisions of the HK Development League and, for the first time, providing ‘friendly’ competitive football for our development players through participation in the HK Community League. Following the huge success of our tour to Cambodia we are keen to repeat this in May 2013 as well as organise other overseas tours to tournaments for other age groups. So as you can see, it’s a hectic season ahead!

On the coaching side we will continue to provide Level 1 equivalent coaching education for every one of our volunteer coaches as well as delivering more advanced coaching education through a series of sessions run by volunteer parent Mark Healey – thanks Mark. And once again, let me say thanks to all of the volunteer parents who coach, our Head Coaches and other committee members who give up so much of their valuable time to make this programme work so well. Additionally, a word of thanks to Soccer Section Chairman, Neil Jensen, who has supported the increased collaboration between junior and senior soccer and who will also be getting involved himself on a Saturday morning (not before 9am though!).

Here’s to another great season for HKFC Junior Soccer!

Chris Plowman, Chairman, HKFC Junior Soccer

JUNIOR SOCCER

The season has kicked off and we are off to a great start. We are very excited to be playing on brand new courts and the new surface and markings are going to make for a great season of netball ahead.

Trials were held through the start of September and I would like to thank all the members of the DSA for their patience and commitment for getting to Chinese International School every Monday and Wednesday throughout the month of September. A HUGE thanks to Marie Farry also for helping the DSA secure the courts, which is no easy task,

believe me, and anyone who has tried to book anything through an automated phone booking system would agree! A big thanks to those who assisted Marie, Pam and myself during the trials. It’s always a huge job what with taking photos to filling out the paperwork to getting the teams registered. Many thanks to Lucy and Emma.

The first league games will be played on 8th October and this season, HKFC has six teams entered in to the HKNA league, so there is sure to be some silverware at the end after all the hard work.

We welcome Vanessa Cuvelier back from competing at the Asian Championships, which was held in Sri Lanka in August 2012. The HK team played the top three teams including Singapore, who won the Championships. Vanessa tells me that there was some very aggressive and exciting netball played.

Some of you will have already attended one of the many umpiring courses offered throughout this season. If you haven’t attended one of the courses and you need to get one under your belt, then contact Siobhan Barnes, who is our dedicated Umpire Convernor on the committee and she can point you in the right direction. If you attended the course already, then well done, let Siobhan know if you need assistance and we hope to see you court side umpiring soon!

Keep an eye out for upcoming social events. We didn’t get to have our yearly ‘welcome drinks’ after trials this year due to the court renovation so we are now looking at the next event, which could be the dreaded ‘scavenger hunt’ or the ‘Nations Cup’, so watch out!

Lastly, thanks to those who have offered to take up the captain and vice captain role on each team. I ask that all players support your captains and coaches by keeping it real, and we will have a great season ahead. Good Luck!

FAMILY SUCCESS IN MALAYSIAA future champion!

10-year-old Raymond Khoo, the HKFC Under-12 Singles Champion, has been in action again – this time at the 41st World Morning Cup Badminton Championships in Kuala Lumpur in July. Raymond played in the Under-10 Boys Singles Category. Raymond made his way to the second round before losing a cliffhanger of a match to local boy Cheah Chee Kit 15-11, 9-15, 13-15. Congratulations to Raymond on a fantastic performance! We look

forward to seeing more of Raymond in action in the future.

Bronze for HKFC at the 41st World Morning Cup Badminton Championships

While Raymond was making HKFC proud in the Junior tournament in Kuala Lumpur, his dad, Boo Boon Khoo, was partnering fellow Malaysian Tung Choon Yoong in the Men’s Age-100 Doubles tournament. Regular readers will recall that Boon is the reigning HKFC Centurion Doubles champion with his partner W S Lim. With his new partner, he reached the semi-finals of an incredibly tough competition, coming from behind against Malaysan pair Ikhwan Kwan and Roslan bin Samsudin 9-15, 15-12, 15-14 to take the bronze medal. They eventually went out to New Zealanders Wong Kwong Hang and Yong Yick Thong in another close match 11-15,12-15. The World Morning Cup tournament included more than 2,000 participants from 20 countries. Our congratulations go to Boon on his bronze medal.

As this article is being written, Boon is taking part in the World Chinese Badminton Championships in Jilin, North China. Watch this space for news of further success.

19th Hole with the Chairman

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to write for a while since I took up a new job which required a lot of travelling over the last 4 months.

I trust that you all enjoyed your summer, although the weather has been very unstable during July and August when there

were a few tropical cyclones hitting Hong Kong. However, the Golf Society (GS) still managed an average of two outings for each month during the summer.

I have written many times in the past on discipline when using our golf debentures. An incident took place at Macau Golf and Country Club (MGCC)where 4 GS members were using the golf debenture on a weekend during the summer. They failed to comply with the requests from the marshals as a result of their slow play. As a reminder, please always follow the marshal’s or warden’s instructions when playing golf, whether you are using Club debentures or playing in a GS event.

US Open SocialThe big guns turned out for the latest social tournament to coincide with the final Major on the tennis calendar – the US Open. About a dozen players took part in four hours of friendly competition; including five of the Men’s A+ squad, who were using the chance to squeeze in some extra training ahead of the new league season, which starts on 17th September. Initially there were two groups playing round-robin before everyone was mixed together for some fun challenges. The limited numbers ensured everyone got plenty of tennis with minimal impact from the watery American beer! Matt Whitecross and Kevin McNamara came away with top honours in their respective groups. Special thanks to Toby for organizing an excellent competition.

2XU Stanley Pier to Repulse Bay Pier (5km) 25th August 2012

Our swim coach Lloyd McBean always talks about how amazing open water swimming is, so it was with intrepidiation that I signed up for his marque race of the year - the 2XU Open Water Swim Series Pier to Pier 5k swim. This being my second swim race and first 5k race ever. Frankly, I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

A short taxi ride with the Bangkok triathlon winner Cat Sen, HKFC swim captain Michelle Robinson and super fish Sally Gentle, took us down to the beautiful Blake Pier, Stanley. During the taxi ride I learnt that Sally has a drinking problem as she proceeded to spill an energy drink over everyone. The hardest thing Michelle finds about swimming 5k is not being able to talk for the duration of the race. And the HK Observatory had a T1 signal up and they also warned fishermen of large ocean swells (note to self - check the weather forecast before doing any ocean races).

As we arrived at Blake Pier, I was greeted by one of the organisers whom I have known for years with “are you really sure you can to do this?”. Hmm…am I sure? No, am I still doing it? Definitely. I’ve paid my entry fee and woke up early, I wasn’t just going to sit around the beach for the rest of the morning! As I looked around, I spotted a motley crew of all shapes and sizes and even a couple of children. I also saw some familiar faces, Simon Brewster, Cordelia Dyer and her husband Ashly who apparently is taking a break from ironman races but decided to run from Pokfulam to Stanley and then go for a swim race. Yep, just like that! In the meantime, Stuart Tait, our secret English Channel swimming torpedo, was busy dousing his whole body in Vaseline (he may not have heard that we were only doing 5k). 5 minutes before the start, the dream/pro tri team of Claire ‘Ms 2XU’ Chapman, Debbie Hanley and Claire’s husband James arrived.

CAPTAIN’S REPORT

The summer has kept us all active with a number of great races.

Some excellent results to report in the ocean this month. Special mention must go to the Society’s swim coach Lloyd McBean with a couple of “1st place podium” performances, well done.

Congratulations to all HKFC swimmers who entered the 2XU Stanley Pier to Repulse Bay 5km swim race recently. This was most definitely a challenging swim, for me the first time swimming in Hong Kong where I actually really felt the swell of the waves, pretty much for around 4 km’s straight. Thanks to Cat Sen, my “swim buddy”, in her bright pink cap, Cat was there to spur me on!

HKFC Elite Youth Swim Training is back in full swing with coach Arthur Li. Our Youth Team will be competing in a fun filled Swimming Gala at The American Club on Saturday 22nd September. Go Team!

HKFC Adult Swimmers will enjoy a fun filled evening Swimming Gala at LRC on Friday 21st September. I am sure we will see some great swims and another entertaining and enjoyable event.

With the forthcoming Hong Kong and Phuket Triathlons just around the corner, training is stepping up for our athletes. The highlight of the racing calendar, everyone is working hard.

Happy swimming, running and biking!

SWIMMING AND TRIATHLON

It was also good to see HKFC swimmers Guy Horne and Robert Stevenson, both of whom have decided to show off their surf skis toys and kindly volunteered their time to marshal racers through the course. This was a great relief to me. Though Robert’s words of I “shall be with you all the way” played on my mind later when I was all alone.

So to the race, the hooter went off and for about the first 50 strokes I felt like I was in the lead. It then became clear I wasn’t; I had been swimming in clear water before we all came together after about the first 100 metres. A few elbows and leg clashes were exchanged but then it all sorted itself out. I rather enjoyed the calm ‘sheltered’ water that leads towards the first peninsula. Quietly telling myself this is a marathon and not a sprint, I tried to concentrate on my swim form. I was muscled out from drafting by a more determined lady. Rounding the peninsula on my own, it was here that I realised how sheltered the first 600m were. There was quite a bit of swell and white horses on some of the waves. At this point I was on my own, having hugged the shoreline, no one to draft off, no one behind me, but the views were nice around the peninsulas. After passing South Bay, I wished I had more time to look around but a race is a race and I was giving it everything. 3 to 4k in I had enough of front crawl and tried a bit of breast stroke and back stroke to ease the shoulders off. Coming into Repulse Bay with 1k to go, I looked behind me and saw that I wasn’t the last and there were actually some other racers still out there! It was a weird feeling that all the swimmers mentioned which was the feeling of being alone or the last person, out there in the open sea. I confess that by this point, I regret having been cajoled by the HKFC swim captain into the Friday morning swim training less than 24 hours before this race. She assured me Lloyd was going to “take it easy”, but his definition of “taking

it easy” wasn’t quite how I understood it! After what felt like a life time, I dragged myself up the beach, oh land, at last! There was an overwhelming sense of achievement, I can’t believe I did it. To be honest, I really wasn’t sure if I could!

At prize giving, HKFC’s own Sally Gentle came third in her age group and Stuart Tait came 5th overall. So congratulations to them and I was so impressed that a child I saw at the start came in 6th overall. So get your kids down to the HKFC Elite Youth Swim Training squad with coach Arthur Li, you may have a swimming prodigy yet to be discovered!

See you in the water.

(Note to self – if wearing hydrodynamic buggy smugglers, put sun cream on the white parts that never normally see the sun!).

SWIMMING AND TRIATHLON

Repulse Bay to Deepwater Bay Swim (2km) 2nd September 2012

Congratulations to Members who competed in this event and a special mention to those who made the Podium in their respective age groups.

Triathlon interview: Derek Ryan How long have you been participating in triathlon? Less than 3 years – my 1st triathlon was Phuket in 2009.

How many hours of training do you do a week? Not half enough – there always seems to be an impressive deficit between my planned and actual training. When in full training mode I’d optimistically target 9 to 10 hours a week.

What is your strongest event? Running – I’m originally a track runner (400m/800m) which probably explains why I struggle in the last 9.2km of the running leg.

What is your Personal best time? For Olympic distance 2 hours 31 mins.

Which is your favourite race? Hard to beat Phuket for atmosphere/crowd support.

What event are you currently training for? Nothing specific right now – but am eyeing up an Olympic distance race in Japan in early 2013 – hopefully along with a few friends with a focus as much on post race ‘rehydration’ as on the race itself.

Tell us about your bike and your dream bike?

I know nothing about bikes apart from number of wheels and colour schemes. I would describe my bike as an entry level Cannondale suitable for my entry level cycling ability. My dream bike would allow me do 40km in under 60 mins with the minimum of effort (and so probably needs an engine fitted).

What is your funniest triathlon moment? Some would say that my swim times are usually a joke. No stand out funny moments but my saddest moment was taking 6 hours to complete the marathon in ironman China……my 1st and last ironman.
