AFL WELCOME -'. . NAB // Rising Stars ... //// U16 Championships e

An exciting start » This week's NAB AFL Under-16 Championships will see future stars emerge.

Welcome to the NAB AFL Under-16

Championships in Queensland, w hich

bring together our eight state and

territory teams in two divisions, mirroring

the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships held

recent ly in Victoria. This is the 10th year of the Under-16

Championships, with Western Austral ia

(D ivision One) and NSW/ACT (Division Two) the

most successfu l teams with four t it les each in

the nine years.

For most players it w ill be their fi rst

opportunity to represent thei r state or territory

in a truly national carniva l, w ith two titles to be

decided th is week.

It beg ins a very exciti ng few years for the

players, w ith subsequent opportunities for

them to progress to Under-18 representative

level, from which two thirds of the AFL drafted

players emerge each year.

This week's carnival w ill also help identify

the majority of players w ho w ill be offered

scholarsh ips as part of the ninth intake into the

AIS-AFL Academy The 30 scholarship holders

w ill attend camps in October and December

th is year. Then in January and July next year,

they w ill receive tu ition from experts fam iliar

w ith w hat is required to play at AFL level, under

the direction of coach Alan McConnell.

The squad w ill also represent Australia

aga inst Ireland in International Rules Football at

youth level, in Austral ia next Easter.

The AFL, for the fourth year, welcomes the

National Australia Bank as the major sponsor of

the Championships. The carnival is a key part

of the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program, w hich

extends from the Under-16 Championships to

the NAB AFL Rising Star Medal, presented

annually to the best young player in the AFL.

The AFL trusts th is week of round-robin

football w ill be a great learn ing experience for

all the players and inspires each and every one

of them to pursue thei r footbal l dreams in the

years to come.

A decade ago, current AFL stars in Adam

Goodes (Vic Country). Luke Power (Vic Metro).

Brodie Holland (Tasman ia), Tyson Steng lein

(Western Austral ia) and Brad Ottens (South

Australia) played in the inaugural Under-16

Championsh ips, before becoming household

names in the AFL.

We sincerely thank AFL Queensland and

the Brisbane Lions for their support in hosting

these Championships, and wish all pa rticipants

an enjoyable and successful w eek.

Young players recognised » The AIS-AFL Academy is at the cutting edge in developing talent.

The AIS-AFL Academy is a commitment

made by the AFL and the Austra lian Sports

Commission, through the Austral ian

Institute of Sport, to support our best

young players in their football and schooling

development.

This year, another 30 young players wi ll be

offered AIS-AFL Academy scholarships. Already

240 youngsters from around Australia have

benefited greatly from an Academy scholarship,

which includes the opportunity to represent

Australia at the youth level in International Ru les

Football against Ireland.

Past graduates of the AIS-AFL Academy

include the likes of West Coast's Brownlow

medallist Chris Judd (Vic Metro) and 2004 club

best and fairest winners, Geelong's Cameron

Ling (Vic Country) and the Kangaroos' Brady

Rawlings (Tasmania), who were both members

of the first Academy intake in 1997

The AIS-AFL Academy is a non-residential

program allowing scholarship holders to

remain at home to complete their important

secondary schooling. Over the course of

the year the group wil l gather together as a

national squad for four camps and competition

against Ireland, predominately during school

holiday periods.

Alan McConnel l, a former Western Bulldogs

player and experienced development coach in

the AFL with Geelong, heads the program and

the selection of players under the following

guidelines:

AIS-AFL Academy scholarship candidates will

meet the following criteria:

• Display the potential to play elite football at

AFL level;

• Have represented their state or territory

at an NAB AFL Under-16 or Under-18

vis it afl. com.au

Championships, or be nominated for

consideration by their re levant state talent

managers;

• Be ineligible for the NAB AFL Draft in the

year of selection;

• Display evidence of appropriate values and

attitudes needed to become an AFL player

• Display evidence of a commitment to

school and education outside their football

interests.

Scholarship holders wi ll come

predominately from the NAB AFL Under-16

Championships, with the selectors having the

ability to add others who meet al l of the stated

selection criteria.

MESSAGE FROM

GARRY LYON

0 n the field, the

NAB AFL Under-16

Championships and NAB AFL Under-

18 Championships provide young players

with a key step in their progress through

the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program.

The bridge between grassroots football

and the elite level, the NAB AFL Rising

Stars Program has already provided dozens

of current AFL players with the opportunity

to showcase their talents.

Best wishes for the Championships.

Along with many others, I look forward to

watching your football futures unfold.

Always planning ahead » Tasmania aims to keep building for the future.

This year, as it has in the past, the

development program for the Tasmanian

team competing at the NAB AFL Under-

16 Championships has been extensive and

comprehensive. Coach Nick Probert, who has

taken over the reins from Hamish Ogilvie, said

he and his team are hoping to have another

successful carnival, replicating what the

Tasmanians did in Adelaide two years ago,

when they went undefeated to win the Division

Two title.

Three players from this year's squad - Tom

Collier, Drew Bardenhagen and Sam Cornish

- have previously participated in an Under-16

Championships, and they will provide both

experience and leadership to their teammates.

The coaches and selectors have also once

again determined to blood two players, Aaron

Cornelius and Thomas Salter, who wil l play at

Under-16 level again in 2006, ensuring future

Tasmanian representative teams are not lacking

in experience.

Selection of the initial squad and training

began last November, with physical testing

and preparation programs. The best-performed

players then had the opportunity to train as

'Young Mariners' during the pre-season.

Three 25-player regional squads completed

a series of practice games and took part in

state titles .

The squad was then reduced to 44 players

who took part in an intra-squad tria l match, with

a further three practice games against various

Under-18 representative teams.

Probert, who is AFL Tasmania's northern

development coach, w ill be assisted at this

year's carnival by Ali Bourn (Burnie), Matt

McGee (Launceston), Grant Fagan (Hobart) and

Ogilvie (AFL Tasmania's southern development

coach and Under-18 representative team

coach).

AFL Tasmania wishes to acknowledge

the great work of the coaching and support

staff, who give freely of their time and whose

only reward is seeing the emergence and

development of young elite players as they

progress along the talent pathway.

Special thanks also go to our major sponsor

Metro Tasmania for its ongoing support of the

Under-16 team, and the AFL for organising

and part-funding the NAB AFL Under-16

Championships.

Justin Sherman

99 He was clearly one of our best players.

The thing that stood out was his ability to

kick difficult goals under pressure.

SUPPORTING GRASSROOTS FOOT1 B '~l!l! . NAB // Rising Stars

//// U16Championshlps 9

All about the future » The National Australia Bank continues to support all levels of th! game.

Now in its fourth season, the :!31-----NAB AFL Rising Stars Program's

role in talent identification and

deve lopment, from grassroots through

to AFL level, continues to bear fruit at

all levels of the game.

Beginning w ith NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, we are now seeing

many of the stars unearthed at these

titles making their mark on the AFL. Players to emerge at the 2002

and 2003 NAB AFL Under-16

Championships who are today shining

at AFL level include several players contending

for th is year's NAB Rising Star Meda l.

Once emerging young players brimming

wi th talent, the likes of Melbourne's Brock

Mclean, Hawthorn 's Lance Franklin, the

Brisbane Lions Justin Sherman and Richmond's

Brett Deled io are now making sign ificant

contributions after passing through each phase

of the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program.

More players w ill hopefully fo llow in their

footsteps. Thirty of the outstanding players

identified through the NAB Rising Stars

Program w ill be invited to join the AIS-AFL

Academy, under the guidance of former AFL

player and coach Alan McConnell.

This group w ill be given the opportunity to represent their country in the Under-17

International Rules series against Ireland.

Recent AIS-AFL Academy graduates who

have made their AFL debuts this season include

Hawthorn's Jarryd Roughead, the Brisbane

Lions' Cameron Wood, St Kilda 's Andrew

McOua lter, Essendon's Angus Monfries,

Richmond's Richard Tambl ing, Coll ingwood's

Ben Davies, Melbourne's Chris Johnson and

the Western Bu lldogs' Ryan Griffen .

The benefits of the NAB AFL Rising Stars Program in assisting the development of

grassroots players through to the el ite level is

highlighted by these debutantes. just two or

three years after they entered the program.

The significant contribution of the program

flows both ways, with the clubs of these

players deriving long-term benefits. Th is year,

the Nationa l Australia Bank - proud sponsors of

the NAB AFL Rising Stars Prog ram - surpassed

a significant mark in terms of its direct support

of grassroots footba ll clubs across Australia.

Since August 2002, the National Australia

Bank has directly contributed more than to

$500,000 to local footy clubs around the

country - both metro and reg ional - through

a range of community support programs,

includ ing the NAB Club Recognition Award.

Other events that make up the NAB AFL

Rising Stars Program include the presentation

of the NAB AFL Rising Sta r Medal in

Melbourne in the first week of the AFL finals

series; the second annual NAB AFL Under-18

Rising Stars Cup during AFL Grand Final w eek;

the NAB AFL Draft Camp in late September,

and the NAB AFL Draft on November 26.

Strong state of-affairs-» The future looks bright for young footballe rs.

The Australia Post Young Scorpions are on

home soil for this year's NAB AFL Under-16

Championships and are hoping to build on

the improvement shown in recent years.

Young players from regional areas including

Mackay, Darling Downs and Bundaberg wi ll join

the best JUniors from south-east Queensland

to try and mirror the success achieved in going

undefeated and winn ing last year's Division Two

title in Adelaide.

Hosting the Championships allows

Queensland to show just how fast Austra lian

Football is growing in all regions of the

sunshine state.

Competing against rival codes to attract the

most ta lented athletes has been part of the

challenge for AFL Queensland.

Recent success stories of locals making

it to the AFL include Daniel Merrett (Brisbane

Lions) Tom Williams (Western Bul ldogs), Brad

Moran (Kangaroos) and Ben Hudson (Adelaide

Crows) and highlight the opportunities available

to young Queenslanders playing the game now,

and others who may consider playing in the

future after being identified via a rookie search

program.

The introduction this year of the AFL Lions

Academy has added another dimension to the

player pathway in Queensland, with six direct

entry levels for players aged 12-18. Brisbane

Lions Jonathan Brown, Luke Power, Simon

Black, Jamie Charman and Chris Johnson have

added their expertise to the Academy to ensure

quality coaching for all participants.

Coach Neville Mil ler and his staff have

enjoyed success over the past few years, with

the Young Scorpions winning seven of their last

nine games at th is level.

That will count for nothing when the

games start, with a team-orientated style and

development being the team's priorities.

Eighteen players in this year's Under-16

squad have played for the Young Scorpions in

the last two years.

AFL Queensland thanks Australia Post for

its wonderful support of the talent program.

Thanks also to the Queensland Government's

Sport and Recreation Department and the

AFL for their ongoing support of the code in

Queensland.

All affiliated junior leagues and clubs are to

be congratulated for their efforts at grassroots

level, as are Junior club and regiona l squad

coaches and AFL Queensland development

staff for helping the players reach this level.

jj Michael had athleticism, but he also had

natura l finesse. He was cat-like. He had a

standout carnival as a 16-year-old.

Fast-tracking player development is

the focus of the coaching staff of the

Tattersall 's Northern Territory squad, whose players only met for the first t ime as a group

on the eve of this week's NAB AFL Under-16 Championships.

While the Northern Territory will be chasing its first Division Two win since 1999, the new

coaching staff will be focusing on individual improvement and making sure the young

Territorians enjoy positive experiences.

New NT Institute of Sport AFL coach and triple NTFL premiership coach Damian Hale

heads a new panel committed to fast-tracking

the football education of players who lack the

opportunity to play against quality players of

their own age in club competitions.

The Under-16 carn ival wi ll be a fantastic

experience, especially for players from remote

communities. It w ill provide the squad with

the equivalent of at least two yea rs of quality

footba ll competition and knowledge.

As an acknowledgement to the small player

pool, the Northern Territory can use up to four

'concession' players who turn 17 this year.

About 80 per cent of team lives in the

Top End, where club competitions finish

in March. So it is a huge challenge for the

players and coaches to be competitive at the

Championsh ips. AFLNT wou ld like to acknowledge the

: thei r Northern Territory heroes, including

Andrew Mcleod, Darryl White and Richard

Tambling, in the AFL. The team motto is simple: 'Be the best you

can be'. If being just that leads players to the

AFL, that's fantastic. And if it leads to a player

winning an NTFL or club best and fairest award,

then that too is a great reward for all involved .

Devetopment is crucial » Australian Football is making strides in NSW and the ACT.

After f inishing in third place the last two

years in Division Two of the NAB AFL

Under-16 Championships, the NSW/ACT

RAMS are confident their preparation wi ll hold

them in good stead and improve their position

at this year's ca rnival in Brisbane.

The team began preparing for the

Championships last November, participating in

various development programs.

An initia l squad of 48 was selected in March

after regional teams competed at eastern and

western conference events in Sydney and

Narrandara . The squad included players from

Broken Hill, the far North Coast, the Western

Riverina area, Albury, Wagga Wagga, Canberra,

Eden, Newcastle, Deniliquin, and Sydney.

Since April, the squad played practice

matches against Queensland and Vic Country

and the coaching staff also increased the

number of trai ning camps to further develop

skills and understanding of the game plan.

Selectors eventually narrowed the squad to 30.

Former Sydney Swans star Rod Carter was

appointed head coach this season, rep lacing

Under-16 NSW/ACT RAMS from 2000-2002,

leading the team to three stra ight Division Two

victories .

will ultimately increase the number of players

drafted or rookie-listed by AFL clubs.

About 200 talented young players

participating in this year's Paul Kel ly Cup have

been identif ied and 40 of those players will

form the first group to participate in the AFL

Swans Academy. They w ill receive a first-c lass

sport and education experience faci litated by

Opportunity knocks » Vic Metro's players wi ll learn plenty during the ca rnival.

The NAB AFL Under-16 Championships

provide a tremendous opportunity for

ta lented young Victorian players to

compete against the best players from all parts

of the country.

Footbal l Victoria and metropolitan leagues work in conjunction to assist the development

of ta lented young players in Melbourne. Loca l leagues play junior representative matches at

Under-14 and Under-15 levels, w ith Football

Victoria talent programs starting with Under-

15 development squads and the Under-1 6

metropolitan carn ival held each Apri l.

Anton Grbac, Footba ll Victoria's director of

coach ing, w ill aga in coach Vic Metro.

"The prog ra m is excit ing, in that the players

fortunate to be involved learn a great deal about

themselves as individuals when competing at

the highest level in their age group;' Grbac said .

" I see the Under-16 ca rniva l as a

developmental opportunity, and we wi ll be

aiming to educate the players about what is

requi red to progress in their footba ll careers.

" For some players it w ill be the pinnacle of

their ca reers and for others it wi ll a memorable

f irst step in excit ing careers;' he sa id.

The Under-16 Championsh ips provide

the impetus for many players to progress

to TAC Cup footba ll , the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships and the AFL.

Vic Metro last won the Division One Under-

16 title in 2002, with Brock Mcl ean and Brent

Stanton, standouts from that team, drafted in

2003 by Melbourne and Essendon respectively

as 17 year olds. The likes ofTravis Cloke, Ben

Davies and Jarred Moore all played for Vic

Metro at Under-16 level, and are playing AFL football this year.

The squad has had a thorough preparation,

w ith the initial squad of 50 players se lected

after the metropolitan carnival in Apri l.

After an internal tria l, trial matches aga inst

Victoria Country and a training camp, the fi na l

squad of 30 has genuinely earned the honour

of representing Victoria. Football Victoria appreciates the support of

the AFL and the Australian Institute of Sport,

and recognises the fantastic opportunity given to those players offered AIS-AFL Academy

scholarships at the conclusion of the carniva l.

Footbal l Victoria also appreciates the

wonderful support of the TAC, and is delighted

to promote the 'L 120' message, w hich

encourages learner drivers to complete 120

hours of driving before getting their licence.

ESS EN DON

outstanding and he had great speed off the

mark. He was a real natural.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA · . NAB // Rising Stars

More success wanted » Western Australia has dominated this carnival in recent years.

WAFL development programs for

juniors aged 14-15 culminate with the

selection of the squad picked for this

week's NAB AFL Under-16 Championships.

The development programs started last

October with carnivals for 14 and 15 year olds.

Each WAFL club had two squads in each

carniva l, catering for players born in the first

half of the year and those born in the second

half. This in itiative was implemented in 2002 in

response to concerns raised about the 'relative

age effect' on player selection in elite squads.

At the conclusion of the Under-15 carnival,

the WAFL clubs each selected an Under-16

squad, wh ich started tra ining in late January
