WORLD-WIDE NOTES.The English marched into Tibet,

hitherto the most impenetrable andmysterious corner of the Chinese Em-pire. Special correspondents walkedIn its temples, "took photographs, sent copious messages, wrote volu-minous books—and the real mysteryof Tibet remains. And it remainsbecause it is not a mere geographi-cal mystery, to be laid bare in New-York, in Tibet, in Pekin, in SanFrancisco, or on the plains of Mon-golia ; it is contained in the heartof every lMng Chinaman, whereverhe may be. The great wall, enclos-ing five hundred millions of our fel-low-men, remains intact; and gener-als, missionaries, journalists, diplo-matists, and discoverers throw them-selves against it in vain.—"SaturdayReview."

Eugene Arceau, belonging to theFourth Battery of the Fourth Regi-ment of Foot Artillery, a native ofthe lie de Re, has the distinction ofbeing the biggest soldier among theconscripts of France. He weighsabout 2421b., and is nearly 6ft. 9in.in height. The authorities are lesspuzzled about his uniform than theyare about his bed. for the beds aresaid to be made of regulationlengths.

A suicide club has been discoveredby the police in Kursk. The clubhad for its motto, "Death is thecure for all ills," but, as set forthin a little book of rules, candidatesfor membership had first of all toshow that they had a substantialcause for wishing to die. A. would-becandidate who presented himself withthe weight of ten or more years ofunhappy married life was receivedwith open arms. Loss of fortune, jincurable disease, an<l a record of ill-

"liick all round w.-re asso excellentnual'ifications for membership.

BILLIARDS ON SHIPS.Mr. W. G. Boonzaier, of Carnar-

von, Cape Colony, has invented asleeping bunk which, it is claimed, will remain perfectly level, and abso-lutely steady, however violent the os-cillations caused by pitching or roll-iog.

At the invitation of Messrs. DonaldCurrie and Co., the inventor went toGlasgow to superintend the fittingup of his self-levelling bunk in thecabins of the new, liner the Guild-ford CastJe, which recently set outon her maiden voyage to the Cape. The inventor's idea is- to subject thebunk to the conclusive test of thevoyage out and home. The chiefmerits of the invention are its sim-plicftty, its safety, and the ease withwhich it can be handled, while theexpense is expected to be only a frac-tional increase on the cost of fittingup ordinary bunks.

By means of the principle of hisself-levelling bunk, Mr. Boonzaierproposes to make possible the play-ing of billiards at sea, his intentionbeing to «nake, not alone the billiardtable, but the entire room in whichit is placed so steady that one willbe able to manipulate the cue onboard ship with the same sureness ason land.

VALUABLE ROMAN FIND.A remarkable example of ancient

.Roman mosaic, work, one of the finestever found in France, was unearthedrecently on the Fourviere Hill, nearLyons, the ancient Lugdunum, capi-tal of the Roman province of GalliaLugdunensis. The mosaic was dis-covered among the substructures ofwhat had evidently been a large andsumptuous building, at a spot closeto the amphitheatre where St. Po-thinus and his companion martyrsdied. During the Middle Ages theruins of Lugdunum were treated likea quarry, and it is marvellous thatthis mosaic should have survived.

The whole work was originallyabout, thirteen feet square ; hut parthas been destroyed. The central sub-ject represents Bacchus seated on apanther. He is crowned with ivy orvine leaves, and carries the thyrsusin his right hand, while the pantherhas the tympanum, or tambourine,in its forepaws. At two of the. fourcorners of the unearthed mosaic twoheads represent, one a woman, witha head-dress of leaves of papyri ormistletoe, and the other a youngman with fair, curly hair. They arein good preservation, but difficult toidentify, owing to the destruction ofthe other two subjects at the corres-ponding corners. It is thought thatthe four may have represented theseasons, which, in ancient art, wereoften grouped round Bacchus orApollo. The border design of thamosaic is in red, black, and white.

HALF AND HALF.

A certain shopkeeper the other day

advertised for an assistant, and whena candidate presented himself he said,'"Yes, I want a bright young man, tobe partly outdoors and partly behindthe counter."

The youth looked rather alarmedfor a moment, and then murmured,"Why, guv-nor, what becomes of mewhen the door slams."

INSIDE INFORMATION."Come, Willie," said his mother,

"don't be so selfish ; let your littlebrother play with your marbles a*rhile."

"But," protested Willie, "he meansto keep them always.""I think not," said his mother.'"I think he does," replied Willie

sharply, " 'cos he's swallowed twoof them already !"

More than 37,000 children are offi-cially recorded as street traders isEngland and Wales.

COSTLY LOVE.

ROMANCE AND TRAGEDY

It is not essential to delve beyond 'the mere thin outer crust of events Ito demonstrate to the least recep-tive that love is, past all argument, the costliest thing m which man andhis mate engage.

Beginning in" Russia, th:rc is thecase of the Granot Duke I'aui, whodared love an c'*~"es. M th;: oit-fret 'it is well to rafloct ill t itussiangrand duchies and the equipment ofthe theatrical dressing-rooms presenta contrast vivid to painfulncss. But .this the Grand Duke could not see, 'nor could he be restrained by theconsideration of his family or thethought that he was already burden-ed with a wife. Station, wealth, andcountry made no difference to him,nor did the threat of the Czar holdhim back. He lives in Pariß withhis actress, an exile from his coun-try, a poor man, and a man withouta name. <

Austria is famous for Vienna andits great crop of cases in point withthis argument. There must comeimmediately to every recollection the6trange case of the Crown PrinceRudolph, whose affair was not per-mitted to go to a decision—death^the supreme referee, intervening. Ru-dolph loved a woman far below hisstation, and refused again and stillagain to desert her in response to'the parential wish and the responsi-bility of an imperial crown. Finally,in the little hunting lodge of Myer-ling, came the decision. Ons morn-ing they found the heir to the throneof the Hapsburgs, tha son of a hun-dred kings, dead by the sids of hiscountess. The thing has remained amystery for all the years that havefled since this tragedy, ani no ac-cepted solution has bejn offered .evennow. Yet, no matter what the truthmay have been, the case remains oneof the striking examples of a man'asacrifice to his love.

This is but one of Austria'? cases. The world-famous mystery of theArchduke Johann Salvatore--general-ly referred to as John Orth—hingedon a s«t of circumstances ver3>- simi-lar to the foregoing. Salvatore wasone of the brilliant officers of theAustrian Army, a man whose succes-sion to the throne was by no meansimpossible., and one of the wealthiestarchdukes of the Austrian Empirs.

He tell in love with an actress, was repremanded, wrote a bitter at-tack on the army»; and then renounc-ed <all titles and Austrian propertyto elopa with the woman he loved. |They set sail for South America in Ja small steamer which was wrecked joff thi Brazilian coast, probably isending the exiled duke and his act- \ress to their deaths. On the othei |

hand, it was always hinted that theyhad escaped, and that he was in hid-ing in Argentina. At various timeefor thirty years he has been discover-ed In this plac« and that—discoveredin the fancy of some dreamer. Hisgreat estates await his return toAustria, for even yet he has not beendeclared legally dead.

Much more recent in Austrian his- ,tory is the case of Archduke Leopold, who, like Salvatore, gave up rank, title, and fortuna to marry FmuleinAdamoviks, a not too fascinatingViennese actress. They left Austriain disgrace, the Duke calling himselfHerr Woelfing, and, after some yearsof butterfly living, joined an aestheticcolony, where the Duke began to ■■practice upon himself and wife vari-ous eccentric cult ideas. She flnallywas forced to leave him, whereuponhe also deserted the cult and mar-ried Maria Bitter, a girl who had 'once been a servant in his family.

With a mere mention of the factthat Ferdinand, the present heir-ap-parent of the Austrian imperialthrone, married the poor Countess jChotek, and risked all his birth af-1 jforded in the marriage, the testimony jfrom that end of the world may be "

dismissed. jPrince Oscar of Sweden did no less

than the Austrians when he became ienamoured of Ebba Munck, a beautt- |ful but lowly lady-in-waiting on his jroyal mother. By the intercessionof that mother he was finally per- jmitted to marry the girl, after ex- jpressly renouncing all rights to the jthrone. Some years l&ter his father \so far relented as to create him jCount of Wisborg. Thus was the 'Prince of Sweden abased to the 'trifling nobility by his love. j

These are a few of the strikingeases that stand out in the affairs of !a generation. Grand Duke Michael jof Russia and') the Countess Torbo 'nay likewise, ;be mentioned in the Io'ame connection. And it is impos- Isible to overlook the incorrigible jLouise^ Crown Princess of Saxony. ]who deserted her royal husband and !her family of children to elope withthe tutor Giron, who tired of her as jreadily as he had wearied of instruct- jing her stupid diaiem-wearing girls "and boys. |

Next in line, she divorced and ,quickly married an Italian violinist 'of: considerable local repute. Thesensation created by his marriage tothe woman who might have beenqueen of a worthy kingdom made herviolinist husband in demand amongthe European music-halls. Thus didher love lor a pedagogue bring thisroyal woman down to the level ol |living on the Iharvest of gold <men |paid to gloat mm* her misdeeds.-* i'Chicago Tribune." j

WHAT IS A GASTROSOPH ?

The gastrosoph is neither a "gour-mand" nor a "gourmet." He is aperson, writes Mr. C. Louis Lei-poldt, in "Comraonsen.se "Dietetics,"published by Williams and Nocgate, who, having carefully studied diete-tics and the art of eating, pays thegreatest attention to the generalprinciples, while at the same timeallowing himself the widest latitudein their application to his habits oldining.

He is the dietetic artist, the ex-pert who knows how to eat, whento eat, and what to eat; who naverpermits convention to interfere withhis appreciation of a tasty and whole-some dish, and despises the dictates-of fashion :that " attempt to makehim sit down to a meal which hecannot relish.

He can appreciate vegetarian cook-ery when it is good just as much anhe can mixed cookery ; he can ab-stain from caviare when it is dryand black without a pang, anddine off a Spanish onion and a bitof Parmesan cheese and black bread:when he feels the inclination to doso. "

■ ■ ; ■ ■'"''■■'' ■

His dietetic life is regulated bymoderation, sanity, discrimination, and controlled taste, not?by iarbi-trary maxims laiti iown'by>author*ties—The "Hospital."

CANADA.ITS RISE AND PROGRESS

The derivation of the word Canadais obscure, but it is believed to haveits origin in an Italian word "'kan-natha," meaning a village or collec-tion of huts.' The supposition isthat Jacques Cartier, hearing' theterm used by the Ita'ians in connec-tion with their settlements, appliedit to the whole of the country.

1 Canada originally comprised the ex-tensive range of territory as far westas the Mississippi, including the greatlakes, which was ceded to Great Bri-tain by France it» 17G3. Subssquent-ly, at the termination of the War ofIndependence, it was limited to theregion now occupied by the provincesof Ontario: and Quebec. described:prior to 1867 as Upper and LowerCanada respectively.

What is known as the Dominion ofCanada is a confederation of; thecolonies of British North America, constituted in 1867 by the BritishNorth America Act of that year .(30Viet. .chap. 3).' MONDAYi 8.30 A.M.Some Reflections on a Boiling Copper."The copper's boiling"—Aisis the com-

mon phrase of early Monday, the housewifesjail to the weekly task. Let us follow it with'1 question that is notso. simple as it sounds :

"" What is it boiling for?" Mostpeople woulduwwer. -"-Why, to Boil the dirt our of theclothes, ot course." Quite so, but forhea th ssak* soinethinK, more thati dirt has to be done»xvav w.lh in the household washing, namely, theseeds of infectious disease.

Infection may be coimnuuicatedto a whole~ity (and beyond it) from one single patient,of which the smallpox epidemic is a case in

point It is due to tiny organisms, hardlyvisible through a micru.-cope but intenselyalive, thrown oH" in tlu: course of. the disease. These float in theair or dustand drift.toclothesand house linen as natur*lly-as steel draws to

a inatinet; wecall them "Germs/ or seeds ofdisease, because just asan ordinary seed growsto a plant, so a disease germ on a humanbody breeds disease; the only protectionivainst germs is to destroy-them,;■" The question.is: :Wi;ll':boi!in S ater and

common soap : do it?, Not always; somedisease germs may thrive, or even breed, in

both. Soj-we, must use., a cleanser that will

not onlyr clean clothes and house linenthoroughly," but also kill all disease germsthat have lodged in them., Fortunately lorus, manufacture and science have combinedto meet this want with Lifebuoy Soap. Byusing Lifebuoy Soap in'-the■laundry the germsof ,-infectious-diseases are caught and killedwholesale, because Lifebuoy Soap is both aperfect laundry cleanser and a strong dis-infectant as well-, and--when the householdclothing*and linen are washed with it, diseasegerms find destruction instead of a refuge.. Our crowded population doubles the riskof infection, Lifebuoy Soap reduces it; butLifebuoy Soap must be so used is to coverboth cleansing and disinfection ; LifebuoySoap for'the bath,' Lifebuoy Soap for floorsand walls, Lifebuoy Soap for'kitchen and;

' scullery,, and when the'-'copper#boils onMonday morning, then let it be especiallyand always , Lifebuoy Soap for the day swashing.,
