Fox baits plantedin regional forestsCHRISTIE HARRISON

Residents are being urged tokeep their dogs on a leashwhen walking in state forestsover the coming weeks asaround 50 fox baits weretemporarily planted in theMaryborough region lastweek.

The 1080 poison shelf-stablebaits were buried last Wednesdayby Forest Fire ManagementVictoria (FFMVic) and will be inplace for four weeks.

Regional manager of fire PaulBates said the baits were set inthree local state forests and saidwhile there have been no recentincidents of pet dogs consumingthe baits, owners should bemindful when walking in theareas.

“There were around 50 baits putin the Lillicur Bung Bong, Wareekand Mount Hooghly forests,” hesaid.

“The baits are buried and set asper the instructions but thebiggest risk is any wandering dogs.If you’re walking your dog in thoseareas make sure they’re on theleash or well under control.Owners need to be mindful, although I can’t think of anyrecent issues we’ve had with dogseating the baits.

“People also need to rememberthat while baits are in state foreststhere are also many privatelandowners baiting at the sametime.”

Mr Bates said the baits presenta low risk to native wildlife.

“It’s not really an issue, we laythe baits according to labeldirections and also the directions

from the Victorian Government,”he said.

“They’re laid in a way thatabsolutely minimises the risk toany non-target species.”

FFMVic forest and roadingofficer, Joseph Rogasch said foxesare a threat to biodiversity andlinked to the decline of manyground-dwelling native animals.

“They also hinder threatenednative species recovery and re-introduction programs,” he said.

“In addition to preying onlambs, poultry and goats, foxescarry disease and increase thespread of weeds in state forests bycarrying seeds in their scats andfur.

“Foxes are a declared pestanimal in Victoria and there is alegal responsibility to control pestanimals on both public and privateland.”

Mr Rogasch said the baitstations will be regularlymonitored and signage has beenplaced

“The baits were buried on May20 and wil be monitored regularlyfor four weeks then removed onJune 17. They will be replaced iftaken during the baiting period,”he said.

“We ask nearby landholders toensure their dogs and other petsare confined to their propertyduring the baiting period.Adjoining neighbours have beennotified directly by mail to ensurethose with dogs are able to carryout precautionary actions.

“Signs have been placed atentrances to the areas that arepart of the program so peopleusing the forests are aware of thebaiting program.”

CHRISTIE HARRISONDrivers are being warned to

stay on the look out for 40 km/hschool zones and schoolcrossings which will reopenacross the shire this week asstudents return to on sitelearning.

A limited number of students willbe back in the classroom from todayas government schools begin aphased return to on site educationfollowing remote learning since thestart of term two due to COVID-19.

Although a number of schoolcrossings have been closed this term, school zone speed limits of 40 km/hfrom 8 to 9.30 am and again from2.30 to 4 pm on week days have beenenforced as vulnerable students or

those who cannot learn from homehave been allowed to attend school.

However, this week all schoolcrossings in the shire will reopenand motorists are being urged totake extra care as an influx ofstudents attending schools isexpected.

Goldfields Highway Patrol SeniorConstable Andrew Henderson saidpolice will be out in force to ensuremotorists are obeying speed limitsand reminded drivers not to becomplacent.

“The school zone speed limits havebeen open this whole time so wehave been actively patrolling themduring school hours and we willcontinue to do so now,” he said.

“Drivers need to be vigilantaround those areas and be wary ofkids using the crossings because

they won’t be used to the normalroutine.”

Sen Con Henderson said policehave noticed an increase in localtraffic over the past weeks asCOVID-19 restrictions begin to easeand said motorists need to take “fullresponsibility” for their driving.

“Traffic has increased in the past10 days,” he said.

“We have had some peoplespeeding in school zones, althoughnot at extremely high speeds. Theyhave been slowing down, just notdown to 40 km/h, they’re beingaware but they’re taking the riskand driving through at speeds theyshouldn’t.

“People need to be aware of theirsituation and take full responsibilityfor their driving.”

School crossings around the shire will be open from today as students begin a phased return to on site learning.

CHRISTIE HARRISONVictoria’s unemployment rate

could peak as high as 11 percentbefore the end of the year due tothe ongoing effects of thecoronavirus, new governmentmodelling has found.

The Department of Treasury andFinance modelling found thepandemic could lead to 270,000 jobsbeing lost and that the unemploy-ment rate could more than doublethe current rate, potentially peakingat 11 percent in the Septemberquarter.

The Central Goldfields alreadyhas one of the highest unemploy-ment rates in Victoria, although ithas remained relatively steady overthe past year.

The most recent data from theDepartment of Education, Skills andEmployment’s Small Area LabourMarkets publication showed in theDecember 2019 quarter, the shire’sunemployment rate sat at 6.9percent, slightly lower than the 7.5percent rate in the previous quarter

The rate is higher than Victoria’s4.7 percent for that quarter andAustralia’s current overallunemployment rate of 5.2 percentaccording to the Australian Bureauof Statistics.

Member for Ripon Louise Staleysaid Victorians have suffered a morethan eight percent loss of jobs sincerestrictions were brought into placein March.

“Some Victoria-wide statisticscame out recently and they showsince the restrictions first started in

mid-March, Victoria has suffered an8.6 percent loss of jobs, which is theworst in Australia,” she said.

“That’s a very big fall. It’s reallydisappointing that we’re the worst inthe nation. More Victorians aredoing it hard than anywhere else.”

Ms Staley said it’s vitalmunicipalities like the CentralGoldfields Shire receive support torecover from the virus.

“Maryborough doesn’t start withthe highest levels of employment, itwill need a bit of extra help and we’llneed to see what that looks like,” shesaid.

“I think that could be a combi-nation of funding packages andbringing projects here.

“If you think about the structureof the Central Goldfields’ economy, there are a couple of sectors hereand across country Victoria thatcould do with some help prettyquickly. Tourism is one of thosebusinesses which will need help oncewe come out of this.”

Ms Staley said a path out of thelockdown is needed now and thatmore local manufacturing could bethe way forward for the shire andthe wider economy.

“What we need now is a path outof the Andrews Government lock-down. We need to know what it’lllook like and be assured that there isa path for Maryborough andeverywhere else in the state,” shesaid.

“The government has been talkingabout more big public sectorinfrastructure projects to get us outof this but that doesn’t helpMaryborough, those projects are in

Melbourne so we do need to see apath that includes the whole state.

“What COVID-19 has shown us isthat as a country, and as a state, weneed to start making a few morethings here. I’m particularlythinking about personal protectiveequipment and some drugs, evenbasic things like Panadol.

“Maryborough has a long historyof manufacturing and it still hasthings like printing and True Foods. As we think about bringingmanufacturing home, Maryboroughshould be really close to the top ofthe list in being able to do some ofthis sort of manufacturing.”

Central Goldfields Shire Councilmanager strategy and economicdevelopment Philip Schier said it’salmost certain the shire’s unemploy-ment rate will be impacted by thevirus.

“You’d expect the unemploymentrate here would have to rise over thecoming months given that it’s anation wide issue and we’re above

average on unemployment rates tostart with,” he said.

“It’ll be hard to get exact figureson job losses and unemployment, clearly some businesses have beenhit hard fairly early and that’llprobably come through in theunemployment data.

“However, I think we’re probablynot as exposed as some othermunicipalities if you think aboutplaces that are highly tourismdependant.

“It’ll hit our accommodation, tourism and hospitality providershard but we haven’t got so many ofthem as a mainstay of our economycompared to some areas. We’ve gotbusinesses that provide essentialservices like food manufacturerswho are not affected quite as badly,so we may not be hit as hard inunemployment numbers overall, but that’s hard to say with any sort of certainty until you see thedata.”

Mr Schier said Maryborough’s“long history” of industry could comeinto play for longer term recovery.

“It’s certainly true that Mary-borough has a long history ofindustry and some of that got hithard in the last 30 or 40 years as alot of manufacturing has gone offshore, but there may be oppor-tunities to bring some things back,”he said.

“We looked at some of ourstrategic advantages in council’sEconomic Development Strategy. For example, we already have somefood manufactures here and fromthere can we develop that more intoa cluster? Often successful

approaches build on the strengthsyou’ve got already.”

Short and long term economicrecovery is also being addressed bycouncil’s Economic Response andRecovery Taskforce.

“This has been a focus of ourtaskforce since pretty early in thepiece when the first economicimpacts were felt,” Mr Schier said.

“The first focus is what can we doin the short term to respond to thecurrent crisis and help peoplethrough it and the second focus iskeeping an eye on the long termrecovery.

“We’ve built up a database of over500 local businesses that we’reemailing around once a week withinformation on financial support andother options available to them.

“That’s really bringing forwardsome of the things we wereintending to implement in our 2020-2025 Economic Development andTourism and Events strategieswhich were adopted at the Marchcouncil meeting. Coming off arelatively low base, they were insome ways economic recoverydocuments in the first place butthey’ve become even more importantnow.

“The good thing is they’re new, upto date and give us a pathway torecovery. We may need to look at re-prioritising some of the actions inthe current context and that’ssomething we’ll be starting with thetaskforce.”

Council’s quarterly listeningposts are set to go ahead in adigital format this week, withcommunity members invited totake part.

Taking place this Thursday onFacebook, the virtual listening postwill be one of the last run by theadministrators ahead of councilelections in October.

The listening posts scheduled forMarch were postponed due toCOVID-19 and while unable to meetin person due to coronavirusrestrictions, Central GoldfieldsShire administrator Karen Douglassaid it was important for thelistening post to go ahead.

“We had some listening postswhich were cancelled late last yearas well so we’re really keen toreestablish that we are interested intalking to people about the issuesthey’re wanting to raise,” she said.

“The virtual listening post will bea bit of an experiment and we don’tthink anyone else in Australia hasdone it quite like this before.”

Ms Douglas said the listeningposts are highly valued by counciland hopes they will continue whenelected councillors return.

“We value the listening posts very

highly, part of what the point of it isthat we actually build up aknowledge base around what thedynamic in some of the communitiesin our shire are,” she said.

“Quite often things that are raisedat listening posts are taken up andbuilt into some of the strategies wehave but people aren’t always awareof how important they have been tocouncil and that’s something we’reworking on.

“We’re very much aware that ourtime here is quickly closing in on usand we’d love to perfect the listeningposts and leave it as a legacy for anelected council who will hopefullysee the same value in it that we do.”

Ms Douglas said she expectsfurther listening posts to be heldbefore council elections in October.

The virtual listening post willtake place on the Central GoldfieldsShire Council’s Facebook page at12.30 pm on Thursday, May 28.

Questions for the listening postcan be submitted via email before 12 pm on Thursday [email protected] or viathe Facebook comments sectionduring the listening post.

The administrators can also becontacted directly to discuss issuesin the community and their contactdetails are available on council’swebsite.

fundraising drive and supports thecharity’s network of social andcommunity services includingproviding shelter for the homeless, assisting families in crisis andguiding people with addictionsthrough to a clean, healthy lifestyle.

Mr Stobie said the majority of thedonations received will be put backinto the local community and thisyear one of the areas the Salvos willuse the funds raised in is supportingthose experiencing homelessness.

“We’re really big on puttingmoney back into the community sothe money we’ll be raising in thearea will be spent locally,” he said.

“It doesn’t just get bundled up andsent somewhere else, most of thefunds will stay local.

“A big part of our funding is usedto support homelessness andaccommodation needs.

“Often when we think ofhomelessness we think of peoplesleeping rough out on the streetsand while we don’t see a hugeamount of that here, there arepeople here who experience

homelessness because it’s not safe attheir home, so they’re couch surfing,or people who have lost their homesand are sleeping in their car. Wewant to support them, especiallycoming into winter.”

Mr Stobie said the funding willalso help the Salvos broaden whatsupport they can offer.

“We want to broaden our horizonon what support we can offer,” hesaid.

“We want to do our best to leaveno one in need, that’s our tag line forthis appeal. We believe with the helpof the community that we canupscale and increase what wealready do, and look into new andinnovative ways to support thecommunity.”

The Red Shield Appeal usuallyruns during May but this yeardonations can be made up until June30.

Red Shield Appeal goesdigital to raise vital fundsCHRISTIE HARRISON

Maryborough’s SalvationArmy branch is asking thecommunity to donate to its RedShield Appeal with a clickinstead of a knock as thefundraiser gets underway thismonth in a unique format.

While the annual appeal usuallysees volunteers door knocking andtin rattling at intersections to collectdonations, this month due tocoronavirus the charity isconducting a digital doorknock —raising funds entirely online.

The Maryborough Salvos raisedjust over $6000 during last year’sappeal and Captain Ronald Stobiesaid while moving online has had itschallenges, the branch has set anambitious target.

“The transition to fully online isdifferent, particularly in Mary-borough itself where a lot of peopledon’t have internet connection,” hesaid.

“It’s an interesting phase and inall honesty we’ve seen a decrease indonations so far. We had quite a fewthings happening last year likebarbecues, people collecting atintersections and collection points atshopping centres and unfortunatelywith the coronavirus we just can’t dothat this year.

“This year we’ve set a fundraisingtarget of $8500, it’s quite anambitious target but if we get thatit’d be one of the highest amountsraised in this area for a number ofyears. We believe with thecommunity’s support we’ll be able toget there.”

CHRISTIE HARRISONJess Burbidge has laced up

her runners for a mammothchallenge this month, aiming towalk 400 kilometres in fourweeks in honour of one veryspecial person in her life — hernan, Lynette Paris.

Jess is one of nearly 7000 peopletaking part in Dementia Australia’sMemory Walk and Jog fundraiserthis year, the first time she’s triedher hand at a personal fundraiser.

A late night phone call reassuringher nan — who is currently goingthrough diagnosis testing fordementia — pushed Jess to take upthe challenge on her behalf.

“Nan’s currently going throughthe diagnosis testing but my familyand I have always suspected she hasdementia because she’s beenshowing the symptoms andprogressively getting worse over theyears,” she said.

“What really made me want to dothis fundraiser is that I had a reallydifficult conversation with nan a fewweeks ago. She was in hospital afterhaving a fall and she called me inthe middle of the night crying tellingme she was scared and didn’t knowwhere she was.

“I had to try and explain it to heragain and again. I was pretty upsetwhen I got off the phone and Ithought there must be somethingelse I can do for her.

“My mum is an absolute trooper, she does everything for nan and Ihave so much respect for her butbecause of the hours I work I can’t bethere for nan as much as I want to. Ithought there must be somethingmore I can do, so I jumped onlineand found this memory walk.”

The fundraiser is usually held asa physical event in locations aroundthe country but this year due to thecoronavirus pandemic it has gonevirtual with participants taking partin simultaneous walks and runs orsetting their own goals.

Jess signed up for the challengethat night and set the ambitioustarget of 400 kilometres, somethingshe admitted she didn’t really thinkabout until the next day.

“I set the challenge that night for400 kilometres and didn’t realiseuntil the next day just how muchwalking that was over four weeks,”she said.

“I’ve been doing pretty well, I’vebeen walking about 10 kilometresper day. I go for walks and then its alot of jogging on the spot at home.Instead of sitting down andwatching TV I’ll jog in front of it fora couple of hours.

“My feet really hurt and my calvesare burning but I do feel a lot betterfor it after signing up. I felt if I didn’tdo the walk, I would feel like I’dfailed for my nan and my familybecause I said I was going to.”

Half way through the month-longchallenge Jess has so far completed213 kilometres and said she’s beenamazed by the response from thecommunity, already raising $694.

“I’ve never done anything like thisbefore so I had no idea what toexpect. I set my fundraising goal at$500,” she said.

“Within three or four days I’dalmost raised the whole amount. Ibumped it up to $700 and now I’veput it up again to $1000.

“I was pretty blown away withhow many people donated, especially in the first few days. A lotof people were also sending reallyencouraging messages.

“Being from such a small knitcommunity, people want to helpwhich I think has had a big role inhow much I’ve raised. I feel reallytouched that everyone seems togenuinely care, because the wholereason I’m doing this is because Icare about nan.”

Money raised during the MemoryWalk fundraiser will help DementiaAustralia support people withdementia, their families and carersthrough counselling, supportgroups, education to help familycarers and professional training.

An online support network isencouraging rural women toput the kettle on or have asplash of wine whilst having avirtual chat to share ideas andexperiences in staying con-nected during the coronaviruspandemic.

Minister for Agriculture JaclynSymes this month launched theVirtual Country Cuppas to supportrural women in combattingfeelings of isolation and stresswhile physical distancing.

Coordinated by the VictorianRural Women’s Network (VRWN),the event is based on the VRWN’ssuccessful face-to-face CountryCuppas that attracted 600 rural

women to 32 events across Victoriain October.

This year participants areinvited to host a virtual morning orafternoon tea, after-work drinks oranother form of an online catch-upwith their favourite communitymembers or group.

While staying at home andlimiting physical interaction hasbeen vital to slowing the spread ofthe virus, it can be difficult forpeople’s mental health andwellbeing — particularly for thosealready experiencing mentalhealth conditions or who live inisolated areas.

The Country Cuppas are arelaxed and comforting environ-

ment for participants to reconnectand share their experiences whilemeeting other rural women.

Anyone wanting to host a VirtualCountry Cuppa will receive ahosting pack from the VRWN,which includes a free Zoomtraining webinar and personaldevelopment resources.

Virtual Country Cuppas will beheld from now until May 31 and isone of several virtual initiativesthat are being developed by theVRWN to upskill and support ruralwomen.

Reminder to look out fortrace mineral deficiency

Recent rain has promptedAgriculture Victoria to issue areminder to sheep producersabout the potential for tracemineral deficiency diseases toeffect their lambs this year.

Agriculture Victoria seniorveterinary officer Dr Robert Suter, said the early season rain that hasbeen welcomed by producers acrossthe state should result in goodpasture growth throughout thewinter.

However, the flush of new pastureincreases the likelihood of tracemineral deficiency diseases in lambsborn in winter and early spring.

Dr Suter said trace mineraldeficiencies can result from ewesgrazing lush green feed during thelast half of their pregnancy.

“These ewes are likely to havelambs with low or deficient levels oftrace minerals selenium, copper, iodine and cobalt,” he said.

“Sheep ingest several essentialtrace minerals from soil intake. Thisusually occurs when ewes grazeshort pastures after a dry summerand before the autumn break.

“When there is a lot of earlyseason pasture growth, the intake oftrace minerals via the soil is lesslikely to occur.”

Growing animals, such as lambs, also have a higher demand for traceminerals than adult sheep and arelikely to suffer a dietary deficiencysooner.

Dr Suter said trace minerals suchas copper, cobalt, selenium andiodine are only required in smallamounts but are still essential foroptimal production, and for life.

The signs of deficiency varyaccording to the mineral involved:

• Copper deficiency presents mostdramatically as enzootic ataxia (or‘swayback’), a condition causingparalysis of the hind limbs ofnewborn or very young lambs. Less

apparent signs include steely wool, anaemia and reproductive loss inolder sheep.

• Cobalt deficiency is an ill-thriftdisease of reduced appetite andgrowth, decreased wool production, anaemia and poor reproductiveperformance. Affected animals oftenhave ‘white liver’ disease. Diagnosisis based on vitamin B12 levels(vitamin B12 contains cobalt), andtreatment is with vitamin B12.

• Selenium deficiency causes‘white muscle’ disease with whitelesions in the red skeletal andcardiac muscle tissue, leading tolameness or sudden death. Ill-thrift,reduced wool growth, and eweinfertility are also reported signs ofdeficiency.

• Iodine deficiency results in anenlarged thyroid gland, known as‘goitre’ in lambs. There are effects onthe developing foetus including

reduced foetal size, brainretardation and increased lambmortality.

Dr Suter said sheep producers inknown deficient areas should reviewtheir trace mineral supplementstrategies to ensure ewes haveadequate levels to produce healthylambs.

“Most of Victoria is iodinedeficient; and an appropriate time tosupplement ewes is midpregnancy,”he said.

“A good time to do this is atpregnancy scanning.

“Special care must be taken withsupplementing ewes with copper, assheep can be easily killed withrelatively small amounts of copper.”

For more information or advicespeak to your local veterinarian orAgriculture Victoria animal healthand welfare staff.

Sheep producers are being reminded to look out for potential trace mineraldeficiency diseases.

Overnight stays can resume atprivate residences andimportantly, for our tourismindustry, so can overnight stays inaccommodation houses and incampgrounds and caravan parks

LETTERS TO THE EDITORRates worry

The recent announcement madeby council with regard to its deferralof rate payments and otherconcessions during the COVID-19crisis, will be welcome.

However there is little benefit torate payers if these concessions aremade under a regime of automaticannual rate increases.

Some rural rates have increasedsubstantially over the last two yearswith no increase in services.

Such rate increases are notsustainable, particularly duringthese difficult times.

Virtually everyone has beenobliged to suffer some hardships as aresult of the corona crisis and councildoes not operate within a vacuum.

Every business has to tailor itsexpenditure according to its meansand the economic climate at thetime.

One would hope that councilconsiders these factors and pegs itsrates until our economy hasrecovered.

THE GRIN BIN

Potentialdisaster

I am writing in reference to thedecision by the Andrews VictorianGovernment to “sign on” to theChinese Communist Governmentcontrolled so-called ‘Belt and RoadInitiative’ (the B&RI).

In all my years of living inVictoria, Australia, I have never, ever seen such a strategicallydangerous policy being pursued by aVictorian Government.

The decision by the LaborAndrews Government to “sign on” tothe People’s Republic of China on‘Jointly Promoting the Silk RoadEconomic Belt and the 21st CenturyMaritime Silk Road’ is utterlystrategically and economicallydisastrous.

The secrecy surrounding theVictorian Government’s decision is

simply appalling; the secrecy in andof itself is sufficient to make allVictorians extremely concerned.

The eagerness and completecompliance of the VictorianGovernment to subject itself, andtherefore every present and futureVictorian citizen, to the terms andconditions of this deal is astonishing.

The deal is completely contrary toAustralia’s national interest andsovereignty, and comes at a timewhen the most importantrequirement of Australia’s foreignpolicy is unity on our standing withand attitudes towards the PRC.

I lived through the disaster whichwas the Cain/Kirner Government —particularly the latter years whenthe state of Victoria was pushed tothe brink of bankruptcy by theineptitude of the management of thestate’s financial institutions(remember when the VEDC disasteroccurred? And remember how we

lost the State Bank of Victoria? Andthe Pyramid Building Societycalamity?).

But all of that pales intoinsignificance in the face of what theAndrews Government is nowproposing.

In my opinion, each and everyVictorian should be saying anabsolute no to this B&RI. It isfraught with extreme strategicdanger, and deserves the strongestpossible condemnation by each andevery Victorian, and indeed by eachand every Australian.

And I include in that latterremark the entire Parliament ofAustralia, who should be not onlycondemning this treachery on thepart of the Andrews Government, but exercising their federal powersimmediately to put a stop to thispotential disaster.

In 1927 the Ford MotorCompany released itssecond market successafter its previous success, the Model T.

By 1929, one million ModelA’s had been sold and by July, two million. Over 4.8 millionModel A’s had been sold whenit was finally replaced by theModel B.

In 1958, local resident RossChandler purchased his firstcar from George Doberly inAvoca.

According to Ross, Georgewas using the car to run hissaw bench.

“I asked him what hewanted for it, he told me sevenpounds. I bought it and droveit home,” Ross said.

“My Model A was parked at

my parents’ home inGladstone Street where mymates and I drove it in theback yard.

“Dennis Hare, Ian ‘Tootie’Chapman and later on, RogerRich, would all come to mumand dad’s to drive the oldModel A.”

The Model A Fords are hotproperty today with carrestorers and hot rodders, andstill demand premium prices.

“I’m not surprised with thehigh prices paid for thesemodels,” Ross said.

“I paid George seven poundfor it and later sold it for 17pound, a 250 percent profit.”

Our photograph shows oneof Ross Chandler’s mates,Dennis Hare, atop of theModel A’s bonnet.

BY ROBBIE WALLISAudi turned the

performance SUV segmenton its head in late 2016when it launched the AudiSport-fettled version of itssecond-generation Q7 largeSUV, with the new SQ7underpinned by a new twin-turbo-diesel V8.

Fighting against rivalsunderpinned mostly by petrolengines, the SQ7 provided apoint of difference for thosepreferring mountains of torqueand superior fuel economy.

Now, the updated SQ7 hasbeen joined by its all newsloped-back SQ8 sibling, making for a two-pronged oil-burning assault on otherperformance-enhanced SUVs.

So how do Audi’s two newflagship SUVs stand up to thecompetition?

The SQ7 and SQ8 touchdown in local showrooms pricedfrom $161,500 plus on-roadsand $165,500 respectively,pitting them against the likesof the BMW X5/X6 M50i($151,900/$155,900), RangeRover Sport SDV8 HSEDynamic ($159,759), MaseratiLevante S ($164,990),Mercedes-AMG GLE53($166,700) and PorscheCayenne S wagon and Coupe($156,200/$166,200).

With the exception of theRange Rover Sport, thedefining characteristic of theSQ7/SQ8’s rivals is that theyare all powered by petrol

only ever having to commit asmall percentage of throttleinput to ensure the big bruisereffortlessly cruises aroundtown.

On our drive in the twomodels, we averaged a fuelconsumption figure of 10 to 11litres per 100 km over a rangeof driving conditions, areasonable figure for a car andengine of its size but still wellup on the 7.6-7.8L/100kmofficial figure.

The one primary area wherethe diesel engine has itsdrawbacks in relation to apetrol mill is in acceleration, with the oil-burner unable tomatch the consistent forwardthrust of a petrol.

Where a petrol engine willkeep accelerating harder andharder as the revs climb, thediesel V8 hits its sweet spot inthe middle of the rev range, lacking the extra level of thrustthat occurs before shiftingupwards.

Audi actually offers a petrolSQ7 and SQ8 in overseasmarkets, with a detunedversion of the RS6/RS7’s 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, good for373kW/770Nm and able toreach 100 km/h from standstillin 4.3s – 0.5s quicker than thediesel.

Adding the petrol versionwould provide greater choicefor buyers, however AudiAustralia has said it has noplans to bring it here.

engines, giving Audi’scontenders a clear point ofdifference.

The engine in question is a4.0-litre twin-turbo-diesel V8,good for a hearty 320kW from3750-4750rpm and amonumental 900Nm of gruntfrom a low 1250-3250rpm.

The twin-turbo system alsomakes use of an electric-powered compressor and 48Vmild-hybrid system, that helpseliminate turbo lag low in therev range while also boostingfuel efficiency.

Its considerable outputs aresent to all four wheels via aneight-speed automatictransmission, with standardall-wheel steering helping toimprove manoeuvrability at lowspeeds and stability at highspeeds.

The power delivery of theturbo-diesel engine means that

after a brief moment of turbospooling, all 900Nm of shovekicks in, sending the big SUVon its way in a manner thatdefies the SQ7’s 2460kg tareweight.

Having a diesel engine suitssuch a heavy car well, with themasses of torque and amplepower at high engine speedsproviding a level ofperformance worthy of the AudiSport name.

Diesel engines traditionallydo not provide the same level ofaural pleasure as their morerefined and high-revving petrolcounterparts, however Audi hasdone a great job of engineeringthe diesel V8 to provide athroaty and deep rumble fromthe quad-exit exhaust system.

The SQ7 and SQ8’s enginealso makes for a comfortableand restrained daily drivingproposition, with the driver

ASHLYNE McINNESThe Australian consumer

watchdog has its eye on therefund of AFL memberships andthose of the league’s respectiveclubs given that it’s unlikelycrowds will be permitted at anystage this season.

While clubs haven’t beenproactive in the refund process, withmany actually asking that fans signup as members, AFL CEO GillionMcLoughlin, the AFL Fans Asso-ciation (AFLFA) and The AustralianCompetition and ConsumerCommission (ACCC) have allconfirmed that members are wellwithin their rights to requestmembership refunds for this season.

The ACCC confirmed that clubsand the AFL are offering a range ofchanges including full and partialrefunds, suspension of payments ora credit for the 2021 season.

The ACCC also confirmed that ithas been engaging with clubs andthat it will “monitor issues inrelation to sport club membershiprefunds, credit and ongoingcharges”.

AFLFA president Gerry Eemanreleased a statement about theapproaching season and the need formembers to be able to choosewhether or not they wish tofinancially contribute.

“Many club members haveeffectively treated this year’smembership as a donation to theirclub, which shows the passion manyhave for their clubs regardless ofwhether they can attend games,” hesaid.

“Those members who are in a lessfinancially secure position shouldhowever be provided with a refundshould they seek it.

“From what we have heardanecdotally, clubs have accommo-dated those who require a refund orpartial refund, which is the rightthing to do. The AFL, clubs and fansmust all work together to ensurefooty survives.”

It is highly unlikely that anycrowds will be permitted thisseason, but Eeman said despite this, the general feel among theassociation is positive about footy’sreturn.

“We want all clubs and the AFL tosurvive and thrive. While we wouldlove fans to be able to attend games,we understand that will not bepossible until health authoritiesdecide this is safe,” he said.

“Our polling indicates that 75percent of fans now want to see thefooty return in any form which is achange from two months ago whenfans were divided down the middleon whether the season should begoing ahead.

“The majority of fans now appearto be looking forward to a distractionfrom what has been a very tryingperiod.”

While clubs are left to their owndevices on the refund front, AFLmembers have been given fouroptions; maintain their member-ship, convert to a $170 absenteemembership, pause their futurepayments or ask for a full refundand cancellation.

Full refunds will result inmembers losing benefits which buildup over time while the other threeoptions will give members adiscount on 2021 season fees andwill see them able to attend games ifcrowds are eventually allowed thisseason.

The 2020 season kicked off inMarch for a single round before itwas shutdown due to coronavirusrestrictions.

The league has made a gradualreturn to training over the last fewweeks with the season return lockedin for June 11 barring furthercomplications.

ASHLYNE McINNESThe first Victorian football

and netball league to pull theplug on season 2020 did so lastweek, citing concerns overhealth, insurance, financialconcerns and responsibilities ofvolunteers.

The Heathcote District FNL(HDFNL) made the call that due toCOVID-19 there will be no seasonthis year despite other countryleagues still holding out hope.

HDFNL officials spoke to FairfaxMedia, confirming that the reasonsfor cancellation included; lack ofinsurance if a player or volunteerwere to contract COVID-19 due to

participation, the pressure onvolunteers to take responsibility forhealth risks, the financial burden onclubs if they couldn’t have crowds, canteens and functions and thehealth risks associated with co-mingling.

The league is made up of nineclubs with a total of around 1500players making up 27 football teamsand 54 netball teams playing in the2019 season.

While the town of Heathcote ispredicted to have a population ofaround 3000, it is situated only 30minutes from Bendigo and is widelyregarded as one of the strongerminor country leagues in the state, often competing well in interleaguebouts with much bigger associations.

The HDFNL is comparable to

both the Maryborough CastlemaineDistrict FNL (MCDFNL) and theBendigo FNL (BFNL), leagueswhere no call has yet been made onseason 2020.

As the kick off date for AFL loomscloser and restrictions are droppedto a point where clubs can trainagain, grassroots leagues willconsult with their clubs on whetherthey wish to return or not with anew finish date for all Victorianfootball pencilled in for October 18.

For the MCDFNL to finish byOctober, the season would need tostart by July (if all 14 teams playedeach other once plus finals and agrand final) while the BFNL couldstart up to a month later with onlynine teams in its competition.

Continued from Back Page“We were always under the

impression that footy would ask for alater time frame, obviously there arehundreds of people who usually playfooty and netball who are stuck athome now I honestly don’t know howeveryone is occupying their time.

“As for us they’ve said we couldpush it right back until April so I’msure it’s workable.

“We’re guided by our respectivestate bodies so we’ll just do whatwe’re asked to. We had to at the endof our cricket season by finishingwithout finals. They’re tough calls tomake, but there are clearly thingsbigger than our sports happening atthe moment.”

The reason for the formalagreement is to account for thesharing of facilities which happenson country and professional ovalsalike for the two sports.

Allen said with only MKM and theCreswick Imperials not having toshare their oval with football clubsin the MDCA, this consideration isimportant.

“Apart from Invermay inCreswick and MKM everyone elseshares with the footy,” he said.

“Most grounds are pretty good tobe honest, that extra traffic that thefooty league puts on Princes Parkmakes its really tough forMaryborough to get their wicket up.They do well to get it done in thetime frame that they do really, thiswill just be a really big test.

“With pitch preparation that’sgoing to be tricky, worst casescenario we may just have to sufferthrough quite a hard wicket at thestart of the year.”

With most activities taking upmajor changes to accommodate forrestrictions to prevent the spread of

COVID-19, Allen said the sport ofcricket is likely to be a little differentcome October this year.

“There probably aren’t too manybowlers who shine the ball in ourleague to be honest, which isobviously a hygiene issue, but I’msure when we play there will be afew rule changes. Umpires areprobably going to have to weargloves,” he said.

“I hope the social side of it, as inclub people, crowds and hanging outafter the game is safe by the timethat we get to play as it is whatmakes our league so unique. It’salways hard fought out on theground but the social side is alwaysvery friendly.

“Whatever happens, it’ll just begood to get people out and playingsport again. People need that outletwhether that be footy, netball orcricket.”

QQuuaarraannttiinnee bbuubbbbllee ffllooaatteedd ffoorr NNBBAA sseeaassoonnWhile the NBA is yet to

announce whether the 2019/20season will recommence or becancelled, the idea of playingall remaining games in aquarantine bubble courtesy ofDisney has been floated.

The NBA’s current season waspaused on March 12, when aplayer tested positive to COVID-19and there are more than 80 gamesleft in the home and away season.

The theoretical set up would seeall teams play at a single site, theWalt Disney Company’s ESPNWide World of Sports Complex inFlorida with strict quarantinemeasures, no external contact andno fans.

Exploratory conversations havebegun between the NBA andDisney, which could see play startup as soon as July.

Matthew Dellavedova’sCleveland Cavaliers teammate, forward Larry Nance Jnr, said in aconference call with reportersearlier this month that while hewould be in favour of the bubbleset up, he understands thatplayers with young families maynot be.

“Take Delly for instance who justhad a kid, who would have hisnewborn child with him. If I werehim I wouldn’t be subjecting myselfto that because then I can bring ithome to my family,” Nance said asreported by Fairfax.

“While I want to get backtomorrow, I also respect the opinionof guys that have bigger things toworry about.”

If the season doesn’t restart,NBA players will be subject to a 25percent reduction in pay and it isrumoured that the PlayersAssociation has already startedinformally polling players onwhether they want to return or notthis season.

According to the World Health

Organisation, the US has beenimpacted more than any othercountry in the world by COVID-19with over 1.5 million confirmedcases and almost one milliondeaths.

Nance Jnr said he would returnto play in the NBA if the rightprecautions were taken.

“The key word being if it’s totallysafe, if it’s totally locked down,” hesaid.

“I’ll play 82 games in 82 days atthis point. I think all the guys arejust itching to come back.”

In less affected states, NBAfacilities were reopened earlier thismonth with now 10 of the league’s30 teams training under strictprecautions.

The NBA is tossing up a single-site competition to finish off its 2019/20season.

AFL Victoria and Cricket Victoriaestimate that most country leagueswill have at least three weeksbetween the code swap, given thesmaller amount of teams needing tobe fixtured for.

Last year all football was finished

The cricket season was set to endon March 29 with the grand final, butit was cancelled due to COVID-19.
