Community reminded to be kind to each other and when dealing with workersASHLYNE McINNES

In a world where tensions are high and restrictions are strict — kindness is still free. Some-thing everyone is encouraged to remember when heading out into the community as Victoria hopefully nears the end of its fifth stint in lockdown.

While many people are cooped up in their home due to Victoria’s fifth lockdown which was initially set to end last week, but was extended until 11.59 pm tonight, many people are still pulling on their uniforms and masks to run essential businesses.

Working in lockdown comes with extra baggage with businesses and their employees having to mandate COVID-19 check-in and masks, which on occasion has caused the

public to lash-out at workers. Goldfields Police Service Area

Inspector Donna Mitchell said abuse is not tolerated and reminded everyone that it is a reportable offence.

“I think people behave badly because they’re frustrated with the service or they’re actually frustrated at something else and they take it out on vulnerable people like retailers, and police for that matter,” she said.

“Something may have gone wrong in their life or they didn’t get what they wanted, there are often other reasons why people behave badly.

“I don’t think workers do (report it to police) which is a shame really because a lot of workplaces have cameras and we may be able to identify people.

“It’s assault. You don’t have to physically push someone or touch them for it to be an assault. If you make the other person feel fear that’s not very nice and you can be charged.”

Insp Mitchell said she has heard firsthand from local employees that people aren’t always happy to comply with COVID restrictions, but stressed that under the State of Emergency these restrictions are law.

“I went to a local petrol station and checked in with the QR code and the person behind the counter said ‘thank you for making my job easier’. When I asked her what she meant she said that sometimes she asks people to check in and they ‘go berserk’,” Insp Mitchell said.

“The conditions of entering any store right now under COVID restrictions is that you have to use the QR code. If you don’t, the store is well within their rights to stay that you cannot enter the store.”

Insp Mitchell said COVID presents a unique challenge for everyone and that a bit of kindness can go a long way.

“I understand people are frustrated with all kinds of things, the government, the Chief Health Officer, their employers perhaps because they have to work from home, parents having to take on a teaching role — there are all sorts of things that are making people vulnerable at the moment,” she said.

Paramount welcomes government funding

The Maryborough Para-mount Theatre will receive a helping hand to bounce back from losses due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this month allocated $35,000 in government funding.

The cinema is one of five in the Mallee sharing in $200,000 from the Federal Government’s $20 million Supporting Cinemas’ Retention Endurance and Enhancement of Neighbourhoods (SCREEN) Fund.

Member for Mallee Anne Webster said the grants would support the recovery of independent cinemas from significant declines in revenue due to COVID-19.

“This funding will enable our independent cinemas to keep

operating during a period of severe disruption, which is so important to the fabric of our community,” she said.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts Paul Fletcher said more than $8.7 million has now been allocated for 158 independent cinema sites across the country.

“Independent cinemas are so important to the social and cultural health of our communities in Australia, which is why we acted quickly to introduce our $20 million SCREEN Fund,” Minister Fletcher said.

“Through this fund we are already enabling 158 cinemas to keep operating and to provide a popular, low-cost and COVID-safe way for people to go out and enjoy a movie as part of a community, particularly in regional areas.”

Blue-green algae warning removed from Tullaroop

Goulburn Murray Water (GMW) has removed the blue-green algae warning for Tullaroop Reservoir following a significant decline in algae levels.

GMW will continue to undertake water quality monitoring and if blue-green algae reach levels deemed unsafe by national health guidelines, a warning will be issued.

A warning was issued by GMW in May this year after high levels of the algae was detected.

Keep up-to-date with current blue-green algae warnings at www.g-mwater.com.au/news/bga or by phoning 1800 013 357 and selecting the blue-green algae information option.

Customers are reminded that water supplied by GMW is not suitable for human consumption without first being properly treated.

Purple, glass-only bin rolling out to residentsRILEY UPTON

Major changes to the Pyrenees Shire’s waste disposal and recycling services will be rolled out from the end of this month, with a purple lidded glass bin to be introduced for residents with street collection.

Rolling out from the end of this month, changes to the shire’s waste services follow the State Govern-ment mandate that councils must move to a multi-bin system for waste and recycling, with the goal that by 2030 most households will have a multi-bin, colour-coded waste and recycling system.

The changes being introduced this month will see residents who already have a street collection service receive a purple lidded bin, specifically for glass, while council will also extend its street collection service to residents who don’t currently have access to it.

The new bins are expected to arrive any day and Pyrenees Shire Council director assets and development services Douglas Gowans said due to the coronavirus pandemic, there may be a delay in the rollout of the new service.

“We have had some issues with the bin manufacturer and some delays, so council have agreed to commit to a rebate for those who are yet to get the service,” he said.

“The rebate equates to approxi-mately three months, which means people are essentially paying for the service from September but may receive it beforehand.

“We’re very confident we’ll have the bins supplied in the next week or two, but rolling them out and

“Rather than having different service levels for different parts of the community, this effectively brings in a standardised service level for everyone and that also helps with communicating what can go in which bin and education around that.

“The really big issue is what the impact on the environment is — the ability we’ve got with the four-bin system means glass will be 100 percent recycled and our co-mingled recycling will also have a higher level of ability to be recycled because glass will no longer be a contaminant.

“By having a separated system, we’re going to see a far higher amount of material recycled and taken out of the landfill stream.”

Once every household has received its purple lidded bin, the community glass skip bins previously used for glass depositing will be removed, however access to glass skips will remain at transfer stations.

Mr Gowans said council will run a community education campaign alongside the new system’s rollout.

“Over the next few years, council will have an emphasis on educating our community to understand what goes in each bin, what can be recycled and we’ll be continually working in that communication space to help reduce the amount of waste that’s going to landfill,” he said.

For more information on the Pyrenees Shire’s changing waste system, visit www.pyrenees.vic. gov.au/Residents /Waste-and-Recycling/Waste-Recycling-FAQs or call 1300 797 363.

delivering them in a COVID environment may slow that down.”

Changes to the waste and recycling system are in line with the start of a new waste contract for council and is in line with community feedback, according to a waste survey conducted by council last year.

The survey found 88 percent of residents wanted a street collection service, with 68 percent also stating council should extend street collection services to all residents.

According to the survey, almost half the respondents with a street collection service mentioned it could be improved with a glass bin collection.

Mr Gowans said the new system comes with a number of benefits not only for residents, but also the environment.

“I think there’s some really great benefits to this and one of those is the equity in that everyone is going to get a universal service which is really good,” he said.

Waste changes, including the introduction of a purple lidded bin, will soon take place in the Pyrenees Shire.

State on the right track for lockdown to ease tonightRILEY UPTON

Victoria remains “on the right track” to leave its state-wide lockdown tonight, with details around the easing of restrictions expected to be announced today.

Victoria recorded 11 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to Monday, all of which are linked to current outbreaks and were in quarantine throughout their

infectious period, according to the Department of Health.

Speaking during yesterday’s press conference, Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley said a decision on restrictions would be made with the most up-to-date information.

“In terms of restrictions, as we made our position clear yesterday (Sunday) we want to make sure that with restrictions ending at 11.59 pm, that we make that decision based on

the most up-to-date and accurate data and advice from our health teams,” he said.

“Suffice to say that as we stand here today (Monday), nothing has yet been finalised but we are mindful of the need that as soon as the decision is made, to share that with the people of Victoria.

“We did take some comfort from the fact that over the weekend, the 22 locally acquired cases had all been

quarantining for the entirety of their infectious period and presented no public health risk.

“What it points to is that we are on the right track and we will make a decision based on the public health team’s most up-to-date advice.”

As of yesterday, there were 190 active cases of coronavirus in Victoria, including four linked to the Mildura outbreak, however no new cases in regional parts of the state

have been recorded. Minister Foley urged everyone to

get tested, even if they have the mildest symptoms.

“It’s a very important thing we can all do, even when we show the mildest of symptoms — please come forward,” he said.

“We look forward to having more to say about what the next staged, careful step out of these restrictions will be tomorrow.”

Obesity rates higher for those living in regional areas and paying rent, report findsANGELA TUCKER

Your postcode, education level and whether you’re renting or have a mortgage can determine if you’re more likely to be overweight or obese, a new report has found.

Australians with lower levels of education, living in inner regional areas, or paying off a mortgage or renting, are more likely to be overweight or obese, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare’s (AIHW) Inequalities in overweight and obesity and the social determinants of health report.

The report brings together data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ National Health Surveys held between 2007–08 and 2017–18 to look at associations between overweight and obesity with the social determinants of health — the circumstances in which people grow, live, work and age.

In 2017–18, around two in three (67 percent) Australians aged 18 and over, and one in four (25 percent) children and adolescents aged five to 17, were overweight or obese, the report found.

“Social determinants of health that can strengthen or undermine the health of individuals include a person’s level of education, occupation, household income and household make-up, but the strength of the association between some of these factors with overweight or obesity is unclear,” AIHW spokesperson Richard Juckes said.

“For example, when we looked at the types of work Australians do, sales workers, labourers, technicians and trades workers, managers, and machinery operators and drivers, had higher rates of overweight or obesity than those in professional occupations.”

However differences in overweight and obesity by occupation were no longer evident when other factors such as age, sex, education, and where people were born or live were considered, Mr Juckes said.

“What we did find from a detailed analysis that controlled for some of the confounding factors, is that overweight and obesity was lowest for working age Australians who held a bachelor degree or higher qualification and generally highest for those who had not completed or attended secondary school, or had a

certificate III/IV, even after considering other factors,” he said.

“Furthermore, after controlling for some of the confounding factors, overweight and obesity was about 1.2 times higher for those paying off a mortgage or renting than those who owned their home, and about 1.2 times higher for those living in inner regional areas than those living in major cities.”

Housing has the potential to indirectly contribute to overweight and obesity by influencing health behaviours, including food choice, even the amount of preparation space and available storage can play a part.

Saria McDonald, accredited practising dietitian at Nourishing Habits, located at Maryborough’s Nightingale Clinic, said there are many reasons as to why a person might be in a larger body and that this is not a sole marker of health.

“There’s a range of factors that can impact on our health — some examples could be stress from work or meeting mortgage payments and less time to be active with less daylight hours in winter and having to travel long distances for work,” she said.

According to the report, for people living in lower socioeconomic areas and in more remote areas, diet quality generally decreases and overweight and obesity increases, as differences in diet quality might, in part, be driven by issues of affordability.

“Healthy diets consistent with the Australian Dietary Guidelines are less expensive than unhealthy diets, but it has been estimated that a family of two adults and two children from low-income households would need to spend proportionally more of their income (about 28 percent) to afford a healthy diet compared with those from high-income households (about 8.9 percent),” the report reads.

Ms McDonald said when considering food, it’s worth thinking how you can plan ahead to help nourish your body.

“A good start is to write out a shopping list each week — and include plenty of variety,” she said.

“Add extra vegetables wherever possible (frozen or canned veggies are a nutritious option if you’re after a longer shelf-life), choose a variety of wholegrains, fruit, lean meats and poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds, legumes and dairy.

“With our busy lives we all want convenience. Create your own convenience meals, by cooking meals in bulk and freezing for when you are short on time. This can help limit reliance on ultra-processed foods which negatively impact health if you eat too much.”

Ms McDonald said Maryborough has lots to offer to help create healthy habits, including a variety of supermarkets and farmers markets in nearby towns offering fresh local fruit and vegetables.

“Consider how you can add some extra activity into your day and chat to your GP for a health check-up,” she said.

“The Life! program is one example of how you can get group support to make sustainable lifestyle changes to help you eat well, be active and reduce stress.”

Funded by the VictorianGovernment and facilitated by Diabetes Victoria, the Life! program is a free healthy lifestyle program that has helped over 70,000 Victorians take the first steps to better health.

Survey highlighting shire’s unsafe areasCHRISTIE HARRISON

A new study is set to put women and gender-diverse people’s safety at the forefront, calling on Central Goldfields Shire residents to mark areas they feel unsafe on a virtual map.

Central Goldfields Shire Council is one of 18 councils partnered with Monash University’s XYX Lab to encourage locals to participate in YourGround, designed to crowd-source women and gender-diverse people’s perceptions of safety in public spaces across Victoria and help make positive change in those spaces.

The project includes an online interactive map where residents can anonymously add an Unsafe Spot and write a description of specific issues in that space.

Users can also vote and comment on any spots already added to the map by other participants.

Central Goldfields Shire manager community partnerships Kym

Murphy encouraged those interested to add their own pins to the map.

“This project is about sharing information about areas where you do feel safe, as well as where you feel unsafe,” she said.

“I think a really key thing we want to highlight is that you don’t have to be in the area at the time to use this map and pin a location. You can do it from home.”

As of yesterday there were already 13 locations marked on the map, including two in Dunolly and 11 around Maryborough.

Two markers were placed at the Maryborough Railway Station with poor lighting, feeling unsafe and a sense of the area feeling uncared for noted by respondents.

The Princes Park area was marked by a respondent as “not safe for women” and “not safe to walk through at night time”, and noted the poor lighting in that area.

Other areas of concern were the Bristol Hill War memorial lookout which was flagged as a space that is unclean and made the respondent feel unsafe, and two pins were

dropped at the Inkerman and High street roundabout which was marked as an unsafe place where cars drive through too fast.

Ms Murphy said there will be work council can do to address areas people feel unsafe based on the map’s results.

“It’s looking at how this infor-mation can help us do our planning, and how we can support the community, women and gender diverse people to feel safe,” she said.

“If we’re looking at lighting we might see some areas we want to consider based on this data. We have been funded to upgrade the lighting at Lake Victoria, which has now started.

“An example is our Recreation and Open Space Strategy which was adopted by council last year — that has a focus on increasing oppor-tunities for women and gender diverse people to participate in formal sport and informal recrea-tional activities, so if we’d had the data from this survey before we developed that strategy, we would’ve been able to use it.

“It’s an opportunity to leverage off our current partnerships to ensure the community, particularly women, girls and gender diverse people, are feeling supported.”

According to YourGround, statistics show that movement and access is restricted for women and gender diverse people due to fear, violence and harassment.

While 80 percent of Australian men report feeling safe walking alone at night, a 2019 Community Council for Australia report showed only 50 percent of women say the same.

“Concerns about personal safety in public space are pervasive for women and gender-diverse people. Women and gender-diverse people are disproportionately impacted so YourGround prioritises the needs of women, girls and gender-diverse people in their communities,” Monash University XYX Lab investigator Associate Professor Nicole Kalms said.

“Gendered inequality in public spaces is the result of systemic power differentials that pervade economic,

political, cultural, and policy. YourGround seeks to challenge this.

“The data and participation is intersectional so other forms of marginalisation and minoritisation is captured including ability/ disability, race, religion, age, ethnicity and indigeneity.”

Ass. Prof Kalms said the results of the project will assist councils in building awareness around gender issues and improving public spaces.

“The ability to move freely in and around the places you live, work and play, and to feel you belong in your space and place is an essential human right. Yet, often this is denied to many on the basis of gender,” she said.

“Local streets, parks, trails and recreational areas across Victoria need to accommodate diverse needs.

“YourGround is an innovative way to bring this about by drawing on the lived experiences of women and the gender diverse.”

The interactive map survey will close on July 31.

To have your say on unsafe areas visit www.yourground.org.

Message of Smile and Buy Local campaign still important a year onContinued from Front Page

Committee for Maryborough chair Windsor Main said that campaign message still rings true a year on and is part of what makes Maryborough a great place to live.

“The reason that we rolled out that campaign last year was to try and change the way people talk to each other and just give them a more light-hearted way to approach the conversation around staying safe,” he said.

“Seeing a smile or having a kind conversation when wearing a mask can instantly put a smile on another persons face. I really think it is

important to remember this situation affects everyone and it affects everyone differently, but acting out aggressively to others is not the answer.

“Fundamentally with what is happening with the virus, there is a lot of fear and feelings of isolation which can build up and turn into frustration.

“While there may have been incidents — that is not a reflection of how the majority of the community is treating one another.

“One of the things that struck me when I first moved to Maryborough is that people would say ‘hello’ and give you a smile or a wave when you

walked down the street. It’s a fantastic part of living here.”

Mr Main said patience will come in handy as businesses are hopefully able to reopen and encouraged everyone to show their support where they can.

“The stop-start nature of the work due to lockdowns means people have moved industries which have been more stable. It’s great that workers have that option, but it also means when businesses, particularly retail and hospitality, can open again it’s going to be hard to build up and train that casual workforce,” he said.

“To go out of your way to show a bit of kindness and some patience as

we hopefully get back into some normal life — it’s amazing what a difference that can make to someone’s day.

“A lot of local businesses still have social media pages and web pages, it would be great if people could leave kind messages of support and let those businesses know that they’re doing a good job and that the community is ready to support them when they can.”

WorkSafe’s It’s Never Okay campaign highlights that it’s everyone’s right to be safe at work and that employers are required to keep their staff safe.

“Violence and aggression in the

workplace are never okay, no matter if you are another worker, customer or member of the public,” a WorkSafe spokesperson said.

“Victorian employers must take every reasonable step to protect the health and safety of their workers, including managing risks associated with coronavirus and work-related violence.”

Workers can contact WorkSafe’s advisory line on 1800 136 089 for specialised advice.

Local police can be contacted on 5460-3300, however Triple Zero (000) should always be used in an emergency.

Residents “in the dark” over AusNet projectCHRISTIE HARRISON

More locals are taking a stand against the current proposed corridor for the Western Victoria Transmission Network (WVTN) project which has been causing concern across a multitude of shires for months.

The project, conducted by AusNet, would see a 190-kilometre trans-mission line built between Syden-ham and Bulgana (near Stawell) to upgrade Victoria’s transmission network and connect renewable energy generated by wind and solar to Melbourne’s north west.

A lack of consultation in areas has been one of the strongest concerns emerging from community groups and residents, including Lexton resident Katrina Lee who became aware of the project early last year.

Ms Lee said while she’s on board with the reasons behind the project, more work needs to be done on its current proposal.

“I’m totally on board with it, we know why the transmission line is needed it just needs to be in the right place and not just go for the least cost option which they’ve done,” she said.

“I’m coming at it from a multitude of angles.

“I don’t farm here but I did when I lived in New Zealand where we had three similar powerlines running across the farm, so I know the disruption it causes for the farmers. That concerns me because I don’t think people quite understand what’s involved with having these lines on your land.

“I’m also looking at the scenic value of the Pyrenees. I’ve been asking the Pyrenees Shire Council how they believe the project would impact tourism and the livability of the area.

“Going forward, how would it affect land prices because with these

because there was plenty of noise coming from further east about it but there was nothing in our end of the transmission line.

“In our area in particular, the (proposed corridor) will take out a heap of bush land, native and plantation trees which is a big concern to us.

“But the real concern for us here is that it was originally going to be a 220kV line going through, and there’s already one of those here so there’d just be a second line added next to it.

“Nobody was overly thrilled about it, but the general concensus was we were happy enough to let it happen. But AusNet have since hinted it could become a 500kV line.”

Member for Ripon Louise Staley has thrown her support behind local residents and said the State Government must take responsbility for the project.

“The major issue for me is that we’ve got this process going on and the community along the line are clearly really unhappy with the project and the way it’s currently scoped,” she said.

“The State Government is hiding from it and yet it’s fundamentally their project.

“I think what’s happened here is that everyone understands as we move to more renewables that the structure of the electricity grid has to change.

“But it’s not good enough that we’ve got this enormous project and some of the regulations that determine what they can do in terms of compulsory land acquisition and where they can put the line date back to the 1950s. It’s just not fit for purpose.

“To me the key thing I keep saying to residents is that they need to participate in the EES process and the government needs to fess up that this is its project.”

big installations the property value goes down, which creates a knock on effect for the shire with rates and that kind of thing.”

Ms Lee was a member of the AusNet Community Consultation Group but said she dropped out shortly after being accepted.

“I attended one meeting and immediately pulled the pin, because they weren’t making any decisions, it was purely to talk it over. We were just having no impact, we need decisions on this so I dropped out,” she said.

Two weeks ago, 11 of the 13 members resigned from the group over issues including that there was misrepresentation, deception and a lack of empathy.

The latest update from AusNet came last month when they narrowed down a single corridor for the proposed WVTN.

A map of the corridor showed it covering an area between existing

transmission lines and around the edge of the Ben Major State Forest and Lexton Bushland Reserve.

AusNet is also conducting an Environment Effects Statement (EES) which will investigate increasing the proposed 220kV section (which requires 40-60 metre towers) between Bulgana and Waubra to 500kV, which would need 60-80 metre towers.

Ms Lee said ultimately she’d like to see more from the Pyrenees Shire Council — which is yet to confirm an official stance on the project — and for the project to go underground.

“I’d like to see the Pyrenees council, who I believe is the only one that hasn’t come out and made a decision on it yet, stand up with all the other councils,” she said.

“For a time now we were saying it’d almost be a win if it was just the 220kV with the smaller towers along the existing line, but ultimately I’d like for the line to be put in

underground along the side of the freeway.”

The Hepburn Shire Council has come out in strong opposition of the proposed transmission line corridor, and the City of Ballarat says while it supports renewable energy and its need for transmission, it’s advo-cating for the project to consider underground power lines.

John Moloney lives near Lexton and the proposed corridor would run 60 metres away from his property, and across many of his neighbours’ properties.

Mr Moloney recently created a Facebook group — Waubra to Bulgana Powerline Action — and hosted a community meeting in Waubra to bring locals together and up to speed on the project.

“Everyone’s in the dark, no one really seems to know what’s going on and people are quite anxious about it,” he said.

“I started the Facebook group

Lexton locals have joined many other communities raising concerns about the potnetial impacts of the proposed Western Victoria Transmission Network project.

Brayden Mills said a lot’s changed over the years when it comes to farm safety, but taking your time instead of rushing to get a job done is paramount when it comes to avoiding accidents. 270721 01

Farmers urged to make farm safety a priorityCHRISTIE HARRISON

More than one person every day working in agriculture is injured badly enough to lodge a worker’s compensation claim, and four lives have been lost this year — something WorkSafe Victoria is hoping to change by urging farming families to learn from the past to create a safer future.

“Every farmers’ had a close call at some stage” says seventh generation Natte Yallock farmer Brayden Mills.

With a bulk of his family farm dedicated to growing barley, canola and oaten plus 1000 ewes and lambs, Mr Mills regularly deals with a range of chemicals and said taking the time to do things the right way is extremely important.

“For me, I really try to make sure when I’m driving the boom (machine used to spray crops) that I’m wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and take my time getting everything right,” he said.

“There’s a real variety of different chemicals I use, and some are more dangerous to handle than others. Keeping good practice with them is a high priority.”

Intergenerational farming practices is the main theme of the 2021 National Farm Safety Week (July 18-24) which aims to raise awareness of farm safety issues in

rural communities across Australia. WorkSafe Victoria has jumped

onboard to promote the message after tragically over the past three years, 24 people have died as a result of workplace incidents in agriculture.

This year the focus is on safety issues as they span the life of a farmer, from child safety through to ageing on farm.

While his family have been relatively unscathed by serious injury on the farm, it’s a lesson Mr Mills has learned the hard way in the past.

“One day I pulled up and started loading the boom, and didn’t put any PPE on because I just wanted to get going,” he said.

“I ended up splashing some chemicals back into my face and got some burns. Little things like that do happen.

“When you’re under the pump you just have to stop and slow down, take your time instead of rushing into things because that’s when accidents happen. It might take you a bit longer but it’s a lot safer.”

On a positive note, Mr Mills said farm safety has come a long way over the years.

“Everything is getting safer around the farm, it’s just a case of keeping it up-to-date,” he said.

“Safety has come a long way from when my grandpa was farming. He’s

got a crook back and other things now because things were different back then, there was a lot of manhandling of things whereas now we have machines for it so body-wise it’s a lot safer.

“While there are more machines, those are also a lot safer now as well.”

Diamond Firetail making a comeback CHRISTIE HARRISON

One of the region’s brightest birds has had a resurgence, officially taken off the near-threatened species list, a change the Maryborough Field Naturalists Club is celebrating.

The Diamond Firetail, a small colourful finch marked by its bright patch of red feathers and white spots, had been listed as a near-threatened species by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN) but has now been downlisted to a species of ‘least concern’.

According to the Maryborough Field Naturalists Club, the finch is found in an area of forest which extends from Maryborough to Dunolly, in the Bendigo Box-Ironbark Forests and the St Arnaud Box-Ironbark Forests, as well as parts of Queensland and New South Wales.

“This matter is of local importance because one of the few areas where the bird can be found is in a forest between Maryborough and Dunolly,” Maryborough Field Naturalists Club president Yazrena Milne said.

“Our club is aware that the bird also occurs between Avoca and the Pyrenees foothills.

“The species is rare and vulnerable in NSW and South Australia, but appears to be holding its own in Victoria and Queensland.

“A resurgence in the bird’s population, including in the Maryborough region, has led to the IUCN removing it from the threatened list and it’s now regarding it as being of least concern.

“Just how secure its numbers are in the local region might be worth further study.”

The finch was listed as near threatened when assessed by the IUCN in 2004 and 2008, but over the past several years that status has changed.

“This species has been downlisted to least concern because although its population may be declining slowly, the decline is no longer believed to be sufficiently rapid to approach the thresholds for vulnerable under the population trend criterion,” a report from the IUCN read.

Ms Milne said habitat destruction and the popularity of the small bird had contributed to its decline.

“Habitat destruction, rabbit and mouse plagues, and trapping for the export cage bird market up until the 1980s decimated its numbers,” she said.

“The Diamond Firetail is an avian favourite in Europe, the United States and Asia, but we should remember that the bird’s international popularity is because of destructive trapping for the export market which ended less than 40 years ago.”

The Diamond Firetail, a finch native to the localarea, has been taken off the near-threatened species list thanks to a slow in population decline.

Bendigo Bank welcomes fresh faceRILEY UPTON

Community Bank Avoca, Maryborough & St Arnaud branches of the Bendigo Bank have welcomed new branch manager Andy Reid to the team.

Starting in the role at the beginning of this month, Mr Reid brings a wealth of banking experience to the role with him, having worked in the industry around the world for the past 20 years.

Living in the Pyrenees Shire, Mr Reid said the opportunity arose for him to return to work at one of the big four banks, or take on a new role at the Avoca Community Bank branch Maryborough branch and St Arnaud agency.

“I had a choice to go back to one of the big four banks in Melbourne and I’ve been doing a lot of work with local future vision projects and future progress associations and so when this opportunity came up, I jumped at it,” he said.

“I wanted to get involved in community banking because we give back to the community, I wanted to use my skills and knowledge to help everyone around me not only with

their individual banking needs but for the community to succeed too.”

Mr Reid said the community model of banking is very important and while still new to the job, is passionate about building the community bank.

“I’m only two weeks into the job but it’s really good so far, I’m fortunate in that we have a very skilled team and everyone is supportive,” he said.

“For me it’s all about getting the message out there to come and bank with us because your whole community is going to benefit.

“We’ve got so much potential, particularly here in Maryborough but definitely across the area to bring on so many more people.

“Not only do we provide the right service for you individually, your whole community will benefit from that.”

Mr Reid encouraged residents to get in touch if they have any questions about their banking or finance.

“I’m really here to help everyone get ahead in their banking, it’s something I love and I know a lot of people don’t, but that’s what we’re here for,” he said.

“We will help you work out what’s right for you and help you succeed — whatever it is, we can help you.”

Andy Reid has joined the local Bendigo Bank team as branch manager, bringing with him 20 years’ experience in the trade. 270721 04

As we’ve seen here, and across Australia, taking the action of implementing a lockdown is effective in stopping COVID-19 in its tracks.

Although so necessary to protect the health and safety of all Victorians, we know they are also devastating for our businesses that now must close their doors.

As reported last week in The Maryborough Advertiser, to support small and medium-size businesses that must close and cannot operate remotely, the Andrews Labor Government is providing cash grants to help out with some of their costs such as rent, utilities and perishable stock.

This pandemic has been tough on our businesses and I thank them for the sacrifices they have had to make. What this past year has shown, though, is that a healthy economy needs a healthy population. We need to stop the spread of this virus so that we can get on with the job of growing our

economy and creating jobs. The Andrews Labor Government

is also accelerating regional Victoria’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic by investing in local communities to create jobs and stimulate the local economy through the Regional Recovery Fund.

The Regional Recovery Fund is designed to kickstart regional recovery by investing in locally identified projects that address each region’s unique and immediate socioeconomic challenges, with a strong focus on creating jobs.

The fund addresses priorities identified by regional communities and is part of almost $30 billion invested by the Labor Government in regional and rural Victoria since 2015.

Locally, the Central Goldfields Shire Council will receive $40,000

to deliver a project supporting retail to bounce back from COVID-19. This project aims to support a specific and targeted strategy to explore opportunities, strengths and define a direction that will promote new and existing opportunities across the retail sector in the shire.

Current circumstances in retail due to online shopping, restrictions around COVID and the changing shopping patterns requires a new approach. The need for a Retail Strategy was identified in the Shire’s Economic Development Strategy.

The allocation is part of a $10 million investment in more than 50 projects through the Government’s Regional Recovery Fund — designed to address community needs and help businesses thrive.

We are working to ensure our communities have the support they need to move beyond last year’s challenges and thrive into the future, helping to make it an even better place to live, work, visit and invest.

Supporting local communities COUNCILLOR COLUMNHistory and traditionHistory and tradition

History is not just about buildings and trees, it is also about respect for institutions, traditions and protocols. The genesis of these lead to many of the laws and celebrations we observe today. They give us stability and a sense of belonging.

In 1854 the diggers on the Ballarat goldfields rose up against an unfair licence in what became known as the Eureka Affair. This resulted in changes to existing laws and a more inclusive democracy.

1915, in a faraway land, young Australians landed at the Gallipoli Peninsula. Many consider this is when we truly became a nation. During the 19th century, irrespective of size every town and city had a town hall that was not only the centrepiece of the community, but was where the elected council conducted the affairs of the community. Throughout Central Goldfields Shire the same was true.

In Maryborough the town hall is part of the civic square, a group of public buildings renowned for their architectural splendour.

The town hall has been central to all the important events during our history. Dame Nellie Melba has sung there, it was a recruitment centre during WWI. Debutante balls were conducted there for 50 years.

1961 when Maryborough was

proclaimed a city, the announcement was made from the town hall steps. For the 150th anniversary the official functions took place in the Town Hall, and council met there for over 100 years.

Some years ago council meetings were moved to the community hub. These are now held in a room that lacks soul, and is bereft of any acknowledgement of the rich history of our shire.

With the town hall now closed due to major electrical works being required, I believe the time is right for us to seriously consider council returning to its rightful home.

The council chamber needs to be brought up to current standards such as computer connectivity and audio/visual capability, whilst at the same time retaining its historical feel.

This has been successfully achieved at Ballarat, Mount Alexander and Hepburn. We must seek government assistance to help us realise our desired goal of delivering the best possible governance to our residents from a place that celebrates our history and traditions.

Climate correction

The Maryborough Climate Action Group is compelled to correct the misinformation provided by David Murphy (Maryborough Advertiser, July 20) in his reply to Debbie Macer’s previous letter.

We will firstly overlook his irrelevant and unfair personal insinuation that highly regarded local teacher, Debbie Macer, has not had a “real job” as a government employee after serving the community for over 35 years.

He appears to be unaware that education makes a massive contribution to our economy and that foreign students studying in Australia have generated our third largest income.

David Murphy’s emissions inaccuracies begin when he says our government seems to “like renewables”. We are currently rated last in the OEDC for our nation’s climate action, especially in relation to energy. However, thankfully we know that state and local govern-ments have been more responsive.

While David rightly says that the price of solar panels has dramatically reduced, he incorrectly suggests “more CO2 is generated than can be saved by solar panels”.

This is wildly misleading when we repeatedly find that solar panels cover their carbon footprint in 2-3 years, leaving at least 20 years of emissions free electricity generation.

David claims that “suffering neighbours” would have to survive a “mini-climate” created by a solar farm. The truth is that any temperature increase will be extremely slight and no more than would be created by an urban or industrial area of similar size.

Farmers have even reported that sheep gather in the shade of the solar panels! Win-win and added value for the farmer.

Wind farms also have nowhere near the negative environmental impacts as claimed by David.

Yes there is a carbon footprint in construction but this is well and truly covered within their life span, particularly when not located in a harsh seawater location.

Wind farms are almost totally recyclable now. They are currently being built to last 45 years and designed in the Netherlands to be refurbished rather than replaced.

What David omits is that construction of fossil fuel power stations has a massive footprint and he fails to tell us that fossil fuels emit huge amounts of emissions

every hour, every day. He fails to acknowledge that

mining fossil fuels has fugitive emissions — dangerous gasses that leak into the atmosphere.

There is no comparison. The claim was made that solar

panels are only 15 percent efficient — they are now up 20-25 percent efficient.

But the argument is a furphy as efficiency refers to the amount of sunlight converted into electricity — turning 20 percent of free sunlight into clean power is a massive bonus and an amazing feat!

Diesel as a dirty fuel, has an efficiency rate of 43 percent and creates emissions every second.

David uses the term “greenie” as a derogatory term while the reality is that 80 percent of the population now want climate action.

Wanting the government to take climate action is now mainstream.

We have no issues with the claim that ammonia has potential as an important future energy provider, however it’s a shame David can only see it being used as an additive to existing fossil fuels.

The overseas company, Fuel Positive is mentioned by David. Yes, their website says they have patented a method to make ammonia from air and water. But the energy source must be sustainable electricity rather than David’s diesel engines.

Instead of referring us overseas, David needs to tell us of the efforts the Australian Government (at last) is making with its National Hydrogen Strategy and green ammonia production.

David also deliberately omits to mention the massive fossil fuel annual subsidies to the order of $12-29 billion, costing each of us up to $1200 per year. This has dwarfed renewable subsidies for a long time.

Finally David is way off the mark when he claims zero emissions will see the world starved of carbon.

This is plainly ridiculous as the world has always generated plenty of its own natural carbon.

It’s the excessive amount we have put up there that needs to be zero.

Sadly, David fails to acknowledge the human and economic costs that climate change is already causing around the world and that scientists are warning that our future generations will pay dearly if we do not act right now.

— Philip Hurse, on behalf of the Maryborough

Climate Action Group

Characterised by failure

Scott Morrison’s time as Prime Minister has been characterised by failure.

The images that will endure are not of leadership, but rather of a bumbling public servant out of his depth.

At our great time of need he was caught holidaying in Hawaii during the bushfire emergency; with the onset of the COVID-19 crisis he was heard declaring that the need to vaccinate was not a race when in fact it was exactly that.

And at the height of the crisis last year, when all focus was needed on solutions, he was instead picking a fight with a superpower and whipping up Sinophobia against the good people of Chinese extraction who have chosen to make Australia home. The damage to our trade relationships will take decades to repair.

There is an old saying that we get the politicians we deserve, but it is difficult to identify what we have done so catastrophically wrong to deserve this man.

— Patrick Hockey, Clunes

Other priorities I wonder if all voters at our recent

council elections were aware that our councillors intended to focus on “climate change” as part of their tenure.

Perhaps climate change should be the responsibility of governments and not only councils.

Surely there are other issues in our shire. Issues that can be assisted with the weight of combined councillors.

Empty shops for one, pray tell what strides have councillors made to increase the amount and variety of shops in this area.

Upcycling is an area council could also focus on. Reducing the ever increasing hard rubbish on footpaths, vacant blocks, and bush areas. Clothing, jumpers, furniture, broken crockery and timber can all be recycled.

There are local organisations always looking for projects, with support from council and supplies all organisations could benefit either by producing, selling or donating used materials.

Shade trees, community gardens are a way to contribute to climate

matters and just need people with a purpose and a will to facilitate a beginning.

Retired carpenters, gardeners, knitters, architects, managers all have a willing part to play if approached correctly.

More community seating, sculptures and murals are all things we could achieve.

If councillors looked a bit harder and found how much talent there is in Maryborough and district, things might get done a bit quicker, less talking, and more action would be a good start.

None of the things mentioned cost a fortune, but getting people together to facilitate change, encourage the lonely, depressed, unemployed to feel like worthwhile citizens is what I would like to see in this community.

I know of the existing services available to people in need, but maybe a different approach is required to see more hope and less despair.

Nobody in this area should be homeless or hungry, it is up to our councillors and help from our citizens to see this does not continue.

— Robyn Jennings, Maryborough

Lions Club support

How fortunate we are to have such an active and dedicated Lions Club in Maryborough who each year devote hundreds of volunteer hours to contribute to a wide range of improved outcomes within our communities.

Recently, the Maryborough Lions Club donated an additional $5000 to the Maryborough Aeromedical Transfer Station (MATS) project making a total Maryborough Lions Club donation of $20,000 to the community-based project.

The Maryborough Lions Club has also partnered with Ambulance Victoria to facilitate the external housing of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The Lions

Club has donated several pin coded cabinets to schools, emergency services and groups within Maryborough and surrounds so that there can be 24/7 community access to these life saving machines.

We applaud and appreciate the commitment of Maryborough Lions Club members, congratulate outgoing president Lorraine Parker for her steadfast leadership over the past four years and offer best wishes to president Brian Hawkins for the future.

Well done, Maryborough Lions Club.

— Dianne Mullins, MATS Steering Committee chair

No excuse

I would like to alert your readers to the plight of the Uyghur people in the Xinjiang province in China.

The Uyghurs are not Chinese, they have their own culture and their own language, but Xinjiang is within China’s borders.

The Chinese government refuses to issue them with passports. They are subjected to forced abortions, forced sterilisation, forced marriages to Chinese people in an attempt to make them Chinese.

There are upwards of one million of them in concentration camps, children forcibly removed from families and sent to “re-education” schools and told they are Chinese.

Inmates of concentration camps are being used as forced labour. Genocide is being carried out by the regime in China.

The United Nations does nothing, the Victorian Labor Party continues to deal with the Chinese government.

Daniel Andrews said “ultimately it’s about getting things done”.

Really? There is no excuse good enough for dealing with any country that violates human rights.

I would urge people to email their members of parliament to stop this evil violation of human rights.

Springbank farmer fined $25k for animal cruelty

A Springbank farmer, Peter Toohey, received a lifetime disqualification order from being the owner or person in charge of any farm animal following a guilty plea in the Ballarat Magistrates’ Court recently.

Mr Toohey pleaded guilty to two charges of animal cruelty and a charge of aggravated cruelty leading to the serious disablement of two cows.

The accused owned five cattle confined to yards on his property, which were observed in poor condition and without access to water or adequate food which resulted in dehydration. The accused also failed to obtain veterinary care for two sick cows.

Mr Toohey had been subject to criminal proceedings previously for very similar offending, at which time he had a conditional Control Order imposed for a period of two years

under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986.

In addition to the lifetime disqualification order, Mr Toohey was fined $25,000 and costs were awarded to the department for the amount of $149.

The Magistrate said as a repeat offender for similar offences in the past and in respect to this offending that a term of imprisonment must be considered. He further said if Mr Toohey had not pleaded guilty, he would have imposed a term of imprisonment.

The Magistrate stated the sentence must reflect to the accused and the whole community that animals are to be protected in our justice system and those who put animals at risk must face serious consequences.

Agriculture Victoria compliance manager, Daniel Bode, said the importance of a lifetime disqualification order is significant

and will ensure that animals are protected from further pain and suffering at the hand of the accused.

“It sends a very clear message that those who continually commit offences against animals should not have the privilege and opportunity to care for them in the future,” he said.

Mr Bode said that apart from the obvious pain and suffering of the animals, animal welfare breaches can jeopardise Victoria’s reputation as a humane and responsible producer of food, which can in turn affect all producers.

“This is a reminder to all livestock producers that animal cruelty will not be tolerated by the Victorian Government or the community,” he said.

Anyone wishing to make a specific complaint in regard to livestock welfare can contact Agriculture Victoria on 136 186 or [email protected]

Owners who have unwell dogs that were fed fresh or frozen raw pet food bought between May 31 and July 3, should contact their veterinarian im-mediately.

This warning comes as Agriculture Victoria is supporting a PrimeSafe investigation into a cluster of dogs affected with severe liver disease.

Victoria’s Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Graeme Cooke said dog owners should look out for a sudden loss of appetite, lethargy and jaundice in a dog that was previously healthy.

“We advise on a precautionary basis that if your dog has consumed fresh or frozen raw pet meat and your dog is unwell, please contact your veterinarian immediately,” he said.

“If you have questions about what you should feed your pet, talk to your vet about nutritional requirements.”

Agriculture Victoria has been made aware of 45 cases of dogs, of which 10 have died, suffering from severe liver disease in the

Bairnsdale, Traralgon and Franks-ton areas. All affected dogs were young, healthy and vaccinated. The department is aware of a further seven anecdotal cases.

Fresh and frozen raw meat sourced from Gippsland and sold between May 31 and July 3 is one common factor and potential connections are being investigated. The meat product is distributed state-wide.

Agriculture Victoria has ruled out infections, canine leptospirosis, ehrlichiosis and aflatoxins and is continuing to coordinate testing of pet food and samples obtained from affected dogs to identify the potential cause including testing at AgriBio and relevant external laboratories. Examination of liver tissue has confirmed the clinical diagnosis of severe liver disease but has not pinpointed the cause.

Investigations are also focusing on food types, food additives, treats and other consumed items, water sources, environmental contacts, human and veterinary medicines and poisoning.

PrimeSafe continues to investi-

gate compliance with the Meat Industry Act and the Australian Standard for the Hygienic Pro-duction of Pet Meat at licenced facilities.

Dr Cooke said Victorian veterinarians should report suspected cases to Agriculture Victoria as the more information that is gathered, the more likely an answer will be found.

“Agriculture Victoria is supporting veterinarians with advice for those who have been treating the dogs,” he said.

“Veterinarians should be particularly on the lookout if previously healthy dogs fall ill to clinically severe hepatic disease over a short period of time and without clear cause.”

There are no indications of any risk to human health or any human food safety issues to date.

Veterinarians seeking to report cases or for further advice should speak with their local Agriculture Victoria Animal Health or District Veterinary Officers or call the Customer Contact Centre on 136 186.

Warning to seek advice if you suspect dog liver disease

Dog owners are being urged to seek vet advice if they suspect their pet is suffering from liver disease.

Growing up in Maryborough and first playing basketball at the MSLC in Gillies Street, Dellavedova’s career, now spanning several Olympics, FIBA World Cups and an NBA Championship, has had a profound affect on the town’s love for the sport.

It even influenced the centre to dub its two-court facility the Matthew Dellavedova Stadium, or as the locals call it, the Delly dome.

MSLC’s Sally Neill said the centre and the wider Maryborough com-munity couldn’t be more proud of

Dellavedova and can’t wait to cheer him on as the Australian Boomers compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this week.

“We are extremely proud of Matthew and we wish him all the best at the Tokyo Olympics,” she said.

“He’s achieved so many things that he set out to in his career, including winning an NBA Championship and it would be wonderful to watch him win an Olympic medal.

“He has inspired so many local kids and he always makes sure to come and give back to the town so we’re right behind him.”

The Boomers won their first game of the three-game qualifier on Sunday against Nigeria and face Italy on Wednesday and Germany on Saturday with both games airing at 6.40 pm.

MSLC rallies behind Delly in Olympic medal campaign

Maryborough’s Matthew Dellavedova is currently at the Tokyo Olympics playing with the Australian Boomers and over 8000kilometres away, the town of Maryborough is celebrating. Despite being closed due to restrictions, the Maryborough Sportsand Leisure Centre, where Delly’s basketball career began, has been decked out in green and gold with the centre’s SallyNeill saying the town and centre is “right behind him”. 270721 06

ASHLYNE McINNES Both the men’s and women’s

Victorian Football League competitions, the VFL and the VFLW, have been stalled due to the Victorian lockdown, how-ever the AFL has committed to running the season to com-pletion when possible.

The men’s competition is five rounds away from finals, while the women’s competition still has to play the last round of its finals before the 2021 grand final, originally pencilled in for last Saturday.

Grand final bound is Carisbrook’s Lauren Butler, who is likely to be selected in Collingwood’s second

crack at the state premiership cup in as many seasons, with the Pies locking in a grand final berth earlier last month.

The VFL expanded to include NSW and Queensland state teams as of this year, meaning some round 15 men’s games were able to be played interstate at the weekend despite the extended Victorian lockdown.

Gold Coast beat Aspley, Southport defeated Essendon and GWS beat Brisbane while back home in Victoria, 10 other clubs wait for their chance to continue the season, as well as the VFLW preliminary and grand finalists.

A statement from the AFL said it will continue to work with the

league and its teams to get the season to completion.

“The fixture will continue to be a week-by-week proposition and the AFL will continue to work with the Victorian Government and health officials on finding solutions for these competitions,” the statement said.

“The AFL has prepared for this situation and has worked through this challenge before. The inclusion of byes for all VFL clubs provides flexibility with the fixture and allows for adjustments to be made to play the remaining games.

“The AFL will continue to meet with all parties and review this decision based on the changing circumstances and advice from government and relevant health

departments and medical experts. We will communicate any updates and provide advice in a timely manner.

“We would like to thank the VFL and VFLW communities, each club, players and families and all football fans for their continued patience and understanding as we continue to navigate through this pandemic together.

“We acknowledge this remains a complicated and rapidly evolving situation but as a football industry we will band together to support each other. This is a reminder that we are all part of a broader society with a responsibility to make sure our community remains safe.”

The statement also clarified that the league is committed to

delivering a women’s grand final, an important statement given last year’s AFLW grand final was cancelled due to rescheduling issues with COVID.

“The VFLW preliminary final between Essendon and Geelong will be postponed on Saturday with implications on the 2021 VFLW grand final to be worked through and further details confirmed shortly,” the statement continued.

“The AFL is committed to working through the final two games and awarding a 2021 rebel VFLW premier.”

The current Victorian lockdown is scheduled to end tonight and further updates on the VFL and VFLW are expected in the coming days.

Butler’s second VFLW premiership attempt halted by lockdown

No local executive for upcoming lawn bowls seasonASHLYNE McINNES

The Goldfields Bowls Division is no longer, with the local lawn bowls association absorbed into the newly formed Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields Region (BCGR) a move one local said hasn’t given the Goldfields any advantages.

Previously the Goldfields division operated independently, but was part of the wider Central Victoria Bowls Region alongside two Ballarat leagues, however a Bowls Victoria shake-up has redistributed leagues for the upcoming season.

Bowls Victoria believes these changes which amalgamate leagues under one singular board will help minimise the amount of volunteers needed by each playing area, promote uniformity among leagues and strengthen the operations of each playing group.

BCGR operates out of Bendigo and now encompasses the Goldfields along with the Campaspe and Bendigo with all three districts now known as playing areas.

Campaspe includes clubs from Deniliquin right through to Lockington in the state’s north, with Bendigo stretching from nearby Campbells Creek through to Serpentine.

The Goldfields Playing Area (GPA) still consists of the same clubs as in the previous local competition; Avoca, Dunolly, Highland, New-stead, Maldon, Maryborough Golf, Talbot and Carisbrook, however the area will no longer have an independent committee.

There will be no local president, treasurer or secretary.

Two local players and past league dignitaries Talbot’s Robert Jackson and Dunolly’s Greg Dobbin have been elected onto the first-ever BCGR board.

Dobbin said the move shouldn’t change too much for players, however it is only early days with

Dobbin said Goldfields thought it may grow given some of the BCGR clubs are located down the road, however that hasn’t been the case and actually, the number of teams participating this summer has shrunk compared to last.

“We have brought it back to two divisions from three as decided by representatives from each club, meaning we’ll have eight teams in division one and eight in division two,” he said.

“We will still play clubs we would normally play in any other season and players shouldn’t really notice much of a difference.

“We were optimistic that some clubs that are close to our other teams anyway may jump into our playing area to strengthen the Goldfields, but nothing has changed.

“We haven’t lost too much, but we also haven’t gained anything so it is a confusing move from our pers-pective.”

A big pitch by the BCGR was to form an elect-in premier league for the best players or teams from the whole of central and northern Victoria, however Dobbin said the Goldfields would struggle to field a side in that division.

“There is a move to make a premier league. You won’t be confined to your playing area, that’s when you might have to travel all over the region,” he said.

“That would also take the better players from our league away from our local competition, not every club has the depth to offer up their best player every week for a premier team.

“We’re quite a small league and for the moment I can’t see many teams wanting to join thatcompetition, but of course there is no reason that individuals or the other two playing areas can’t.”

The local lawn bowls season traditionally starts in October, however a start date has not yet been confirmed.

the latest board meeting quashed due to COVID restrictions.

“We don’t officially have any executive anymore, so no president secretary or treasurer. What we are going to have is representatives for the Goldfields on the (BCGR) board, which at the moment is myself and Robert Jackson, to speak on behalf of our clubs,” he said.

“Essentially for us, all this has done is changed our name and removed our executive. We don’t have any more teams than we did, everything should essentially be the same.

“All decisions for all playing areas will be made at a board level between us, Campaspe and Bendigo’s representatives.”

Whether or not this will be a good thing for the Goldfields, Dobbin said

he’s not sure. “Organising our own competition

really wasn’t a big deal for us, people have been doing it for a long time and mostly, we got things done pretty quickly without many dramas,” he said.

“It is a bit strange to think that there won’t be an executive of players running their own competition at a grassroots level. Someone’s got to be there on the day to make those day-to-day decisions.

“I’m still getting used to the idea of the region. I’m not sure what powers, if any, a playing area has on its own. There is a feeling that we have given up our independence and our decision-making capabilities within our own league.

“Previously as a playing body we did belong in the Ballarat region but

we were a separate entity, decisions made for the Goldfields were made by us.

“We’re the one in the weakened position too. Bendigo and Campaspe are in tune with each other, they’ve been loosely affiliated for a while now and they’re also bigger in general so if a decision comes down to a majority it is likely to go that way.

“There may be small changes to by-laws or the way either midweek or Saturday pennant is run, but that will be up to the board as a whole to discuss I would imagine.”

A positive for Goldfields is that playing areas will not cross over, meaning initial fears that a team like Talbot would have to travel three hours to Deni for a game of bowls are no longer founded.

While the move shouldn’t change much for the everyday bowler, Dunolly’s Greg Dobbin, who is on the newly formed BCGR board said it has changed things from an organisational point of view. 270721 05

U18s coach would be final piece of the Pie puzzleASHLYNE McINNES

The Maryborough Football Netball Club is on the hunt for the ultimate piece of the Pie puzzle, hoping to find coaching excellence in its bid to field its first under 18s football team since 2016.

For the last five seasons Maryborough has been without its under 18s side due to lack of playing numbers, but next year should be different with a bulk of its under 16s side ready to move up.

Club president Brendan Roughead said the 18s is the only grade missing from a full football line-up at the nest, something the club is ready to change in 2022.

“It’s the only group that we are missing at the moment, we have under 10s, under 12s, under 14s and under 16s and we’ve been working hard to get the under 18s up for several years,” he said.

“We have a really strong under 16s team at the moment, with 14 of those boys coming up into under 18s next

year. We need to get a really good coaching panel in place to retain those players and add to them to get this team up and going.

“Your development as a club comes from your juniors so if we keep them in place it helps the club greatly in the future.”

Roughead said the club is finally in the position to get the side up and running and a well credentialed coach is who they are seeking to nurture some talented up-and-comers.

“The group that is coming up is plentiful and there are quite a few talented players among them,” he said.

“There are a handful who are training with the Pioneers and one of them, Lucas Hurse, even played a senior game this year so that’s a pretty good sign that there is some great ability in that group to work with.

“We are looking for a well-credentialed coach to be able to develop the best out of the boys.”

Maryborough has battled with consistent playing numbers across

its senior and reserves teams in recent years and not having an 18s team as a clear pathway from junior to senior football hasn’t helped.

Between the two over 18 football teams, there has been just one win this year, with the season currently on pause due to the lockdown.

Despite this however, Roughead said gate takings have been up and membership numbers are strong.

“We’re always looking for people to be involved in our club. Our spectator attendance and our gate takings have been up this year. Our membership is at an all-time high,” he said.

“The club has been really well supported by the Maryborough community and we’d like to keep that up when we can return to play.”

Expressions of interest for the under 18s coaching position close this Friday, July 30 at 5 pm and can be made via post to MFNC, PO Box 225, Maryborough VIC 3465, email [email protected] or by contacting Brendan Roughead on 0419 000 632 to discuss.

Lucas Hurse is one of around 14 Maryborough players ready to move up into under 18s next season, with the club very confident of fielding the side for the first time in five seasons and currently on the look out for a coach. 180621 25

Newstead light delight to be delivered just before Christmas thanks to grant

A near $400,000 lighting

project at the Newstead Recreation Reserve should be switched on by Christmas thanks to a quarter of a million dollar funding allocation from the State Government.

The Newstead Recreation Reserve has been awarded $250,000 from the Community Sports Lighting Stream, a funding initiative delivered by theVictorian Government’s 2021 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

In addition to this allocation Mount Alexander Shire Council will make a $120,000 contribution, with Newstead Cricket Club and Newstead Football Netball Club both contributing $5000 each.

The estimated total project cost is $380,000 to achieve a semi-professional level of sports lightning, 200-lux across the oval with a 300-lux infield for cricket night matches.

In response to the announce-ment, Newstead Recreation Reserve secretary and Newstead Football Netball Club president Mark Leckey said the flood lighting will have a wide-reaching impact on sport in the town.

“This announcement is excep-tionally good news for the user groups based at Newstead Recreation Reserve,” he said.

“New floodlighting at the reserve will allow the user clubs to extend their playing and training times, giving them capacity to build higher levels of participation beyond the current status quo.

“This is especially welcome given the growth in female participation in football and cricket in recent years and gives opportunity for expansion to the introduction of female cricket and football teams soon.

“We would like to acknowledge and thank the past and present

members of the Recreation Reserve Committee, as well as past and present members of all user groups at the reserve.

“We would also like to acknow-ledge the support and hard work provided by our local Mount Alexander Shire Council teams and

also acknowledge Cr Matthew Driscoll for his support with this project.”

This project is due for completion by December 2021 and is one of 73 projects pushed along by the State Government’s $22-million funding pool.

The Newstead Recreation Reserve will soon be able to confidently host night football, cricket and netball games thanks to near professional level lighting.

Maryborough’s favourite export Matthew Dellavedova featured in Australia’s gritty 84-67 win over Nigeria in the first of three preliminary games on the road to Olympic gold.

The opening half of Sunday’s game left much to be desired for fans back home tuning into the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, with the score reading 23-all at the first break and changing hands frequently from that point with the Australian

Boomers managing to snare a three-point advantage by the main break.

Increasing this to a six-point gap at three-quarter time, it was the fourth that really stood out for the Boomers, with a 26-15 closer seeing the Aussies to a 17-point win.

Dellavedova was one of 12 to take the court in the green and gold in his third Olympic campaign, playing just over 16 minutes, scoring eight points, including two threes, two turnovers and three assists.

Having met and beaten the

Nigerians just weeks ago at the pre-Olympics training camp in America by 39 points, the Boomers knew the game would be hard-fought, with many NBA players on the court.

The Australians had their own NBA talents who all stepped up with Patty Mills leading scoring with 25 points, Joe Ingles and Dante Exem following with 11 each and Dellavedova offering international experience and a game changing three from well beyond the arc.

It’s no secret that the Australians are gunning for a medal, preferably

a gold one, with the side having finished fourth on the national stage for several campaigns in a row, including at the last Olympic games with an agonising one-point bronze medal loss to Spain.

A good sign for the Boomers is that the heavily favoured US men’s basketball team experienced its first Olympics loss since 2004 on Sunday, defeated by France by nine points in Pool A.

The Boomers now play Italy on Wednesday, followed by Germany on

Saturday to finish their Pool B contest and hopefully advance to the group stage.

Italy defeated Germany 92-82 on Sunday, meaning tomorrow night’s meeting will foreshadow Australia’s run into hopeful medal glory.

As of print deadline Australia was ranked fourth with six medals overall, two gold, one silver and three bronze with China, the US and host nation Japan already asserting their dominance at the top of the medal tally ranked first, second and third respectively.

BOWLS MOVED

The local lawn bowls competition, formally known as the Goldfields Bowls Division, has been moved into the newly formed Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields Region due to a reshuffle of competitions by Bowls Victoria. This will mean there will no longer be a local executive, with all local bowling decisions to be made out of Bendigo.
