CHRISTIE HARRISONA 68-year-old former Mary-

borough taxi driver has pleaded guilty to multiple sexual assault offences against four victims — including two 18-year-olds — described by Magistrate Trieu Huynh as “predatory” and “deplorable”.

Ian Sewell appeared at the Maryborough Magistrates’ Court to receive a sentence indication on Thursday in relation to five charges.

The accused leaned forward and kissed the victim on top of her head, then pulled her head back with his hand and kissed her on the right cheek.

The victim quickly moved away and according to the prosecution felt violated and wanted the accused to leave.

The victim’s son left the bedroom and went into the loungeroom. The victim followed him and the accused then entered the room, walked over to the victim and hugged her.

The prosecution stated Mr Sewell kissed the victim on her lips without her consent. The victim stepped backwards to get away from the accused.

Inaugural goldfields festival postponedRILEY UPTON

One month out from its inaugural event, the Goldfields Community Festival — Connect and Celebrate, which aims to reconnect the community in the wake of COVID-19, has been postponed due to health con-cerns around the pandemic.

The event was to be delivered by Go Goldfields in partnership with the Committee for Maryborough and Maryborough Rotary to offer a free, all ages and all access event to reconnect the community in the wake of the pandemic at Phillips Gardens.

Originally taking place on March 19, the first iteration of the annual event is now set to take place in October after organisers pulled the pin due to concerns around the coronavirus pandemic and the health and safety of those attending the festival.

In a statement from Go Goldfields last week, organisers apologised for any inconvenience the postponement will cause however said the safety of those attending was paramount.

“Even as government regulations shift in the coming months, public events may be negatively affected by COVID-19 as attendees still may be reluctant to attend large gatherings,” the statement read.

“We are aware of the increase of positive cases in our community and the new testing and safety require-ments for schools which as well as causing anxiety and confusion for some families, makes it more difficult for us to actively engage with this sector.

“The organisers thank our community for the enthusiasm and support that has already been shown for this event.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause our event partners and community presenters.”

The festival will offer free rides, games and kids activities, a stage with a family-friendly entertain-ment program of music and dance classes, picnic areas, a FReeZA youth area, roaming performers, community, special interest and service information stalls, parenting facilities, pop-up playgroups and more.

It’s hoped the festival will attract a high number of locals, with organisers believing it’s a rare and unique opportunity for local groups

and services to engage with the community, recruit new members and offer information in a fun and relaxed environment.

In the statement, organisers acknowledged the postponement will support the festival to become bigger and better.

“We will reschedule the event for October 2022 and have identified many opportunities to embrace with this rescheduling including funding, engagement and content growth for the event,” the statement read.

“We are working to create long-lead activities with our community that will lead into the festival event bringing schools, social groups, business members, artists and cultural producers into the preparations between now and when the wattle blooms.”

Residents Cheryle, Audrey and Ruben Vanland made the winning contribution for the new Goldfields Community Festival — Connect and Celebrate, which has been postponed until October. 080222 01

Rent relief for small and family businesses on offer

The Victorian Government has introduced new regula-tions under the Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme to support small and family busi-nesses experiencing financial hardship due to the latest wave of the pandemic.

Eligible commercial tenants with an annual turnover of $10 million or less who have suffered a decline in turnover of at least 30 percent due to COVID-19 will be able to access the scheme. The new regulations operate from January 16, 2022 and run until March 15, 2022.

Commerical tenants need to demonstrate their decline in turnover by comparing January 2022 to January 2020. Landlords will be required to provide proportional rent relief to their commercial tenants in line with the reduction in turnover. For example, a business with a turnover of 40 percent of pre-pandemic levels could only be charged 40 percent of its rent.

Of the balance, at least half the rent must be waived, with the remainder to be deferred. The freeze on rent increases will continue.

The majority of landlords and tenants will negotiate in good faith to reach agreement. The Victorian Small Business Commission (VSBC) will continue to provide information and free mediation to

tenants and landlords if help is needed for all parties to reach an agreement

Many commercial landlords have already backed Victorian businesses by providing rent relief to commercial tenants.

“Small and family businesses are going through a challenging period due to the Omicron wave and that’s why we are extending the Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme,” Minister for Small Business Jaala Pulford said.

“The new regulations will help to ease the financial burden for many small and family businesses that are facing hardship caused by the pandemic.

“I would like to acknowledge and thank those commercial landlords who continue to do the right thing by their tenants during such challenging times.”

Eligible commercial landlords will continue to receive support from the Victorian Government, with more details on a new round of the Commercial Landlord Hardship Fund set to be announced shortly.

The Commercial Tenancy Relief Scheme was first launched in 2020 and reintroduced in July 2021.

Full details of the scheme including eligibility are available on the VSBC’s website. Tenants and landlords can contact the VSBC for further information on 13 87 22 or visit vsbc.vic.gov.au.

Magistrate labels offending as “deplorable”Continued from Front Page

The victim opened the door and saw the accused, who pleaded with the victim to withdraw her statement, telling her he was sorry for what he did and that he wouldn’t do it again. The accused was told to leave the property and refused, stating he’d made a mistake.

The victim advised the accused if he didn’t leave, she’d call the police and closed the door.

The prosecution stated after the assault, the victim was terrified the accused would return and assault her again. The victim soon moved to a different town.

On April 23, 2021 the victim was contacted by police and she told them of the accused returning to the property after the assault, which had not been reported to police at the time. On April 24, 2021, the victim provided a further statement to police detailing the incident.

The second charge related to victim two, who was in her 30s at the time of the offending and had known Mr Sewell for around 20 years through the taxi service and a mutual friend.

On December 5, 2017 the victim called for a taxi to pick her up from a Maryborough property at around 1.30 am.

Mr Sewell arrived to pick up the victim who got into the front passenger seat, and when they arrived at the victim’s address, the victim paid for the trip when the accused leant over to hug the victim.

The court heard Mr Sewell put his hand around the back of the victim’s neck and wouldn’t let her go. The accused pulled the victim’s face towards his trying to kiss her on the lips, and grabbed the back of her arm, touching her breast with his other hand.

The prosecution stated the victim was scared and attempted to break free. The victim told the accused to stop but he continued to pull her by her neck trying to kiss her.

The court heard the victim continued to try and break free and was able to open the car door, as she believed the accused would drive away with her in the vehicle and assault her further.

When the accused realised she’d opened the door he removed his hand from her neck. The victim left the taxi, went inside her house, called her sister and told her about the assault.

The third victim, who was aged around 50 at the time, was attending an event at a local venue on May 5, 2018 when she called for a taxi to get home some time between 12 and 1 am.

Mr Sewell, who was known to the victim through the taxi service, arrived to pick up the victim who got in the front passenger seat.

According to the prosecution, the victim said she noticed the accused was very engaged in their conversation and was looking at her for extended periods. The victim felt

uncomfortable and started pulling back from the conversation.

The court heard the victim fell asleep during the drive and approximately five minutes from her address the accused turned into a dirt road and stopped the taxi.

The accused got out of the vehicle, walked to the passenger side and opened the door. The victim was still asleep when the accused got on top of her in the passenger seat.

The victim woke and found Mr Sewell on top of her. The accused started kissing the victim on her lips and slipped his tongue inside her mouth. The victim could hear the accused making noises like he was enjoying what he was doing.

The victim felt she had a lack of control and was in disbelief as to what was happening, and tried to fight him off. She said to the accused “what are you doing?” and the accused said “don’t worry, you won’t have to pay for the trip okay”.

The court heard the victim continued fighting him and the accused eventually got off her, returned to the driver’s seat and continued the drive.

Later that morning (May 6), the victim called the Maryborough Taxi Service to report the incident. The taxi service advised the victim report the incident to police but at the time, the victim was embar-rassed about what had happened and didn’t feel police could do anything.

Approximately two weeks later, the victim was on a road in Maryborough when Mr Sewell stopped next to her in his taxi and asked her how she was. He then stated she should come to his house for a cup of tea.

The victim attended the Mary-borough Police Station on November 19, 2020 and made a statement to police, and again on June 3, 2021 after recalling further details of the assault.

The court heard since the incident, the victim has had a lasting memory and scarring on her mind from what the accused did.

The fourth victim was 18 at the time of the offending and had known Mr Sewell for around three years through the taxi service.

The court heard on May 22, 2020 the accused attended the victim’s workplace to purchase a meal. The victim came to the counter to greet the accused when the accused grabbed the victim and pulled her into a hug.

The accused ran his hand down her back until his hands were on her buttocks. The victim was in shock and pulled away. The accused placed his order and waited in his taxi outside. The victim then took the food to the accused who put down his car window.

When the victim passed the bag, the accused grabbed her fingers and wouldn’t let go. The victim had to pull away to get him off her.

The prosecution stated on October

7, 2020, the victim was going to an event at a local venue. Due to poor weather she arranged for a taxi, and Mr Sewell attended her address.

The victim got into the taxi and saw the accused had his face mask pulled down. The victim was holding her own face mask in her hand after finishing a cigarette prior to entering the taxi.

The accused grabbed the victim around the middle of her back, pulled her towards him and kissed her on the lips. The victim froze and was in shock, and the accused told her “don’t tell anyone”.

On arrival at the venue, the victim opened the taxi door and attempted to exit. The accused grabbed the victim around the neck area, took his face mask off, pulled the victim towards him and kissed her again. The victim was wearing a face mask which stopped the accused connecting with her lips.

The accused told the victim “I’ll come back and get you later”. The victim told him a friend would take her home. The victim reported the incident to a friend at the event.

On November 2, 2020 at around 6 pm the accused came to the victim’s house uninvited. The victim was scared for her safety and had a panic attack.

The accused left the property and the victim contacted a friend, who contacted the taxi service, who advised them to report it to police which the victim did at the Maryborough Police Station.

Mr Sewell was interviewed at the Maryborough Police Station on November 21, 2020 for matters involving three of the victims. He was later interviewed on May 19, 2021, for the matter involving the first victim.

In relation to charge one (the first victim), police asked the accused if he remembered picking up the victim and her son, he said it rang a bell. He said the victim was “pretty upset” at the behaviour of her son. The accused said he thought he might’ve tapped her hand, and held it, but that it was a long time ago.

The accused agreed he brought the victim’s groceries inside and that he kissed the top of her head and put his hand on her shoulder because she was upset.

He told police he did not kiss her cheek or lips.

In relation to charge two (second victim) the accused confirmed to police he knew the victim and remembered the trip. He confirmed he and the victim hugged.

The accused said the victim gave him a “cuddle and a kiss (on the lips)” which she usually did.

He denied grabbing the victim and trying to kiss her.

In relation to charge three (victim three) the accused agreed he picked the victim up but answered no comment to further questions.

The accused also made a no comment interview in relation to charges concerning the fourth victim.

The court heard victim impact statements from all four victims.

In her statement, the first victim said the assault forced her to move towns as she didn’t feel safe.

“I haven’t been able to get into taxis since the assault happened,” she said.

“I started going down a really bad path, I put my child into care and haven’t seen him since. I don’t have a relationship with him because I turned to drugs and alcohol. I made this choice so he could have a better life. I couldn’t look after myself.”

The second victim said in her statement that she’s had panic attacks since the assault.

‘The biggest impact on me is that I used to be a confident person, and now I don’t trust anyone,” she said.

“The day after this happened I had a break down. I found myself on the floor at my mum’s front door and I couldn’t breathe. It was the first time I had a panic attack. I still have panic attacks.

“Before this I was a strong person, I knew how to defend myself, now I run away and hide if I hear a fight or an argument.”

Reading her statement in court, the third victim said the memories of the assault come back every time she hears the words ‘taxi cab’.

“In my experience on this night my personal safety was violated by this individual, and his duty of care in his role as a taxi driver was blatantly abused,” she said.

“It makes me feel sick when I think about what he did to me and his attitude about it is vile.

“Whenever I hear the word taxi cab or cab driver my horrible experience is the first thing that comes to mind. The memories of that night come flooding back and that’s hard to live with.

“I am a strong and confident woman but this makes me feel vulnerable, really sad and scared.”

The fourth victim said she lost her job due to the assault.

“In the first instance I felt powerless, very powerless. I felt scared to do anything, scared to move or breath,” she said.

“I was on my way out and he ruined my confidence and my night.

“Because he showed up at my house I didn’t become hypervigilant, I became paranoid. My safe place was no longer safe.

“I withdrew from my community and I never wanted to leave my home. I was unable to get to work anymore because a taxi was the only way of getting there. As a result I lost my employment.”

Mr Sewell’s defence said he has been a taxi driver since 1991 and that his commercial passenger vehicle licence was suspended on November 4, 2020, and that he is now disqualified from reapplying until next year.

“It would be implausible to suggest, given these matters and his age, that he would be granted

another licence,” they said. “He does own his taxi and he

leases it out which is his only form of income. The loss of his income will deal a real blow to him financially and he accepts that.

“This is a man who has lived in this town since 1991 and it’s fair to say this being a relatively small town, his reputation is tarnished.

“He got through the first 51 years of his life without an allegation or an offence, that is of some relevance.”

The defence argued a Community Corrections Order (CCO) would be an appropriate punishment given Mr Sewell’s age and lack of prior offending.

The prosecution noted the offending carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and said it was predatory and escalating, and that the accused showed a low level of remorse.

During his sentencing indication, Magistrate Huynh said Mr Sewell had abused his position as a taxi driver.

“I think it’s right to say that this offending is deplorable, I think we’re all in heated agreement that it’s predatory in nature and perpetrated against vulnerable victims,” he said.

“Mr Sewell abused his position as a taxi driver, a position that according to his character references at least made him quite a respected member of the community up until this point. He used his position to perpetrate these offences against the victims.

“The victim impact statements detail the significant and lasting impact this offending has had on them. These are the consequences we see all too often with respect to victims of this type of offending.”

Magistrate Huynh indicated he would give Mr Sewell a CCO with conviction, however said only factors including Mr Sewell’s age and the COVID-19 pandemic prevented a sentence which included jail time.

“This was a situation, Mr Sewell, that I was very closely going to indicate jail, a combination sentence,” Magistrate Huynh said.

“With some reluctancy I am prepared to indicate that I would sentence Mr Sewell, should he plead guilty to these offences, to a CCO.

“The conditions would obviously involve a high degree of unpaid community work to take into account the punitive aspect, then I would be open to other therapeutic conditions depending on assessment by corrections on suitability.

“I’d imagine any CCO would be quite lengthy, and I imagine I would be ticking off the box on offence-specific programs to reduce re-offending, that might include a sex offender program.

“There’s no chance there’d be anything but a conviction.”

Mr Sewell accepted the sentence indication and pleaded guilty to all charges, and will be sentenced on February 11.

Pyrenees Shire residents are being warned there may be a delay in bin pick ups due to the pandemic.

Last week the Pyrenees Shire Council advised residents that its waste contractor has had a

number of staff impacted by isolation requirements, leading to a change of drivers to make sure bins can still be collected.

The change means there could be delays in bin collections, however, council has advised residents that if their bin isn’t collected during normal collection times, to leave their bins out until drivers can pick them up.

Staff shortages impacting bin collection in Pyrenees

Pyrenees residents might have to wait a little longer than normal for their bins to be collected as COVID impacts the waste industry.

RILEY UPTON The Avoca silo project has

taken another leap forward with remedial works all but complete ahead of its official opening in just two months’ time.

Some 5000 square metres of land surrounding the silo is currently being treated and prepared to hold

crowds of up to 1000 people at events in the very near future.

The remedial works have already transformed the site, which previously felt like a standalone silo, and now feels like a space connected to the rest of the arts and gardens precinct.

The land directly surrounding the silo has been given a covering of gravel to allow visitors to get up close to the silo safely, while land further back is now being prepared for grass to be put in.

Avoca Community Arts & Gardens president Hugh Forster said the remedial works mark a significant milestone in what is now an almost completed project.

“We’re pretty chuffed to reach this point, a vision is one thing but actually turning that vision into reality takes a lot of work,” he said.

“This is the first of the silos to have a dedicated night time element both mural-wise, as well as projected image.”

Once the remedial works are finished, Mr Forster said the owl mural itself will have the finishing touches completed and the project will be all but finalised.

“Jimmi Buscombe, the artist who painted the owl mural, is returning mid-February to finalise the night elements which includes painting the owl’s eyes with a glow in the dark paint as well as the sky above the owl and the Pyrenees Ranges below,” he said.

“A lot of those elements have to be completed when it’s dark so Jimmi

can see how it all comes together, but he’ll also be painting the shed just in front of the silo with a mural too.

“We would also like to complete the second mural which is the phascogale, however the issue is having additional funds toaccommodate the railway requirements over safety protocols and we are looking into that.”

Starting in 2018, the silo project aimed to transform the area around the silo into an outdoor multi-function space which would allow for outdoor movie screenings, concerts and countless other events.

Works to complete the silo project are starting to ramp up ahead of its official opening, Silobration Under the Stars, which is set to take place on Saturday, April 2.

Taking the form of a music event, Silobration will feature some big names on the stage, although nothing has been officially announced as of yet.

“Silobration will basically be a music event from 4 pm until 11 comprising a number of musicians and bands and that includes local groups as well,” Mr Forster said.

“There will be an hour’s intermission at sunset and that’s when we’ll do the official opening and acknowledge the State Govern-ment’s financial contribution that got this all going.

“There will also be a showcase of projection artists’ work because that was part of the original concept.”

Official opening set as silo project nears completion

The Avoca silo’s owl mural will soon light up in the night sky thanks to glow in the dark painting, with Avoca Community Arts& Gardens president Hugh Forster set to welcome the return of artist Jimmi Buscombe to complete the works. 080222 02

Data reveals over 50 month wait for dentalCHRISTIE HARRISON

Local public dental patients are now waiting more than four years to be seen new data reveals, as wait times at the Maryborough District Health Service’s (MDHS) dental clinic balloon due to COVID restrictions and recruitment difficulties, something the health service says is an issue state-wide.

The findings come from the Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) which says wait times for public dental care have increased significantly state-wide over the past six months.

Wait times at MDHS have been consistently on the rise since 2017/18 when they were at 22 months (or just under two years).

The most recent data shows the average wait time for the year ending December 2021 is 51.5 months — just over four years.

That’s an increase of nearly three months since June 2021 and significantly longer than average wait times across Victoria, which is 24.8 months.

Across the Ripon electorate, the average wait time for general dental care was 39.7 months.

Wait times for general denture care was 38.5 months, a decrease from 54.2 months the previous year.

ADAVB CEO Associate Professor Matt Hopcraft said while Maryborough’s wait times have been on the rise, the number of people on the wait list has declined, and issues like recruitment do impact regional health services.

“Maryborough’s wait time has been increasing for quite a while, and much more than the state average,” he said.

“However, the number of people on the waiting list has declined a bit since the peak of 1712 in 2017/18, now at 1111.

“Certainly things like recruitment and retention in rural areas have been an ongoing issue around the state.”

Assoc Prof Hopcraft said lengthy wait times

aren’t just being felt in Maryborough, with Victoria currently experiencing the worst delays in care this decade.

“There are more than 1.5 million Victorian adults who are eligible to access public dental care in Victoria, but only 100,000 were able to receive care in the past six months, around 26 percent fewer than normal,” he said.

“Public dental waiting times have now increased to 24.8 months across Victoria, up from 22.7 months in June 2021. These are the worst delays in care this decade, and the average hides a dire story with 34,000 patients forced to wait more than three years.”

MDHS operations manager for primary and preventative health services Robyn Jordan said on-the-ground data shows the health service has slightly shorter wait times than the ADVAB figures.

“If you look at all that data I think it’s a fairly common thing across the state that there are extensive dental wait times,” she said.

“The ADVAB data shows only seven of the 51 community agencies have a wait time less than 12 months.

“Our wait list is slightly less than what is released, it’s currently about 48 months. That’s

the longest wait list, but the average wait time for our clients to see a dentist is 28 months.

“Sometimes when this data is released, the raw data may say 51.5 months however we’re constantly working on and trying to reduce our wait list.”

With COVID lockdowns only allowing for emergency dental care to reduce the spread of the virus, plus recruitment and retention issues across all sectors, Ms Jordan said it’s all had an impact.

“Recruitment and staff retention is certainly an issue, but not just in rural areas, it’s across the state,” she said.

“There was a period several years back where we didn’t have a dentist and wait times went up, then it dropped a little when we got a dentist.

“The pandemic certainly hasn’t helped. Over the past two years there’s been quite an extensive period where we were unable to see any patients other than those who needed urgent care due to restrictions.”

Ms Jordan said the health service is currently in the recruitment process and reassured the community that those who require dental care will be seen.

“We’re currently in the process of recruiting

a new dentist which will have an impact on our wait list,” she said.

“We’re about to have a very exciting initiative begin with La Trobe University. We’ll be having Bachelor of Oral Health students here on placement. We’re really thrilled about that and they’ll be coming with their own supervisor so we’ll be able to do a lot more treatments.

“We do also have a voucher system which is used state-wide, so if patients meet the criteria required, our dental service will issue vouchers to patients to attend a private dentist. That means they can see the private dentist and the bill is sent back to us.

“For children, we have the Smiles for Miles programs which is screenings for all kindergarten children which we do throughout the year. We also have a state-wide program called Smile Squad. We set up a clinic in primary schools so students have the opportunity to get a dental check and treatment.

“Everyone’s doing a fantastic job under quite difficult circumstances and for those who really need dental care, we’ll go out of our way to ensure that’s provided. People don’t go without dental care if they require it.”

Daily case numbers drop to below 10,000

The number of daily new COVID cases dropped below 10,000 in Victoria over the weekend, as cases remain low in the local community.

In the Central Goldfields Shire there were seven new cases recorded on Saturday, four on Sunday, and eight on Monday with 62 cases still active.

There have been a total 572 local cases recorded since the pandemic began.

Nearby, Pyrenees Shire had 14 new cases on Monday with 88 active, Mount Alexander 49 new and 111 active, Hepburn nine new and 111 active, and Loddon five new with 34 active.

Ballarat and Bendigo recorded 153 and 129 new cases respectively.

State-wide daily case numbers finally dropped below 10,000 over the weekend, with 8275 new cases confirmed on Monday.

Of those new cases, 5967 were recorded from rapid antigen test results and 2308 from PCR tests.

There were 638 people in hospital with the virus and sadly, seven more lives were lost.

There were 59,801 active cases across Victoria.

In vaccination news, 16 and 17-year-olds became eligible to receive their booster vaccine doses late last week.

In the two days since they became eligible, 4318 Victorians in that age bracket have received their third jab.

The recommended wait time between receiving your second and third dose in this age group is three months.

Victorians aged 16 and 17 are now eligible to receive their third vaccine dose.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is undertaking an amendment to the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme.

The amendment (amendment C97malx) seeks to correct errors and anomalies within the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme, which are associated with both the zoning and overlay mapping and ordinance

of the planning scheme. The majority of these errors and anomalies are associated with the Heritage Overlay.

The amendment also proposes administrative changes to tidy up the zoning and overlay controls along the Calder Freeway (which has been declared a freeway under the Road Management Act 2004), to ensure that these are accurate and reflective of the current land use,

road manager, and conditions. Mount Alexander Shire Council’s

manager of development services, Georgina Hope said that the most recent corrections amendment to the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme was completed in 2016.

“Since the previous corrections amendment, more administrative errors and anomalies associated with both the planning scheme clauses and mapping have built up,

or land conditions have altered”, she said.

“Council officers keep a record of these so that they can be reviewed and corrected regularly, to ensure the Mount Alexander Planning Scheme is accurate and up-to-date”.

Community members can view the amendment from 4 February to 4 March, and make a submission at mountalexander.vic.gov.au/CorrectionsAmendment.

Copies of the amendment are also available to view during business hours at the Civic Centre in Castlemaine.

Submissions must be made in writing and submitted by Friday, March 4, 2022.

For more information about the planning scheme amendment process, visit the ‘Planning Scheme and Amendments’ section of council’s website.

The Avoca’s beer list earns hall of fame statusRILEY UPTON

Named as having the best beer list in the country three years in a row, The Avoca Hotel has now been added to Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards hall of fame.

In a region best known for its wine and vineyards, The Avoca bats above its average in terms of beer, boasting a list of more than 200 hoppy and malty beverages from across the globe.

The pub was named as having the best beer list in the country in 2018, 2019 and 2020 and was recently inducted into Gourmet Traveller Wine’s Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards Hall of Fame for 2021.

Avoca Hotel owner Ian Urquhart said the three consecutive wins and now hall of fame entry is a big commendation for the business.

“We’re on that list alongside places that are pretty serious with their wine and so on,” he said.

“We have got a well recognised wine list but we’re specifically known because of what we’ve done with our beer, we’ve worked to change the landscape in terms of that.

“Of course we still have your country standard beers but we also

industry for 30 odd years and I wantto be able to give that back.

“We have people who come in anddon’t even order a beer, they just askto be taken on a journey and we dojust that — it’s nice to have theportfolio where we can do that.”

With fresh shipments of beerarriving regularly from countrieslike Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, the United States, Japan, China andThailand just to name a few, MrUrquhart said he’s hopeful of nownotching a few more awards for thewine list.

“We’re pretty pleased to haveachieved that but we will continue todo what we do, I’d like to seewhether we can get what’s called athree glass rating which would meanwe’re one of the top wine lists inAustralia,” he said.

“We’re currently a two glass ratingwhich is a seriously good wine listbut there are a few judges’ commentsthat have come back where we canimprove.

“It is a bit challenging for us giventhat we really try to focus as muchas we can on local product, there’s alot of wineries we have here that arequite obscure because they’re notknown outside the region.

“I’d like to pursue refinement inthe list itself and see if we can oneday get up to that three star rating.”

have 12 different pages of beers with information on them, describing their flavour profile, where they come from and how much alcohol is in them.

“We’re pretty pleased we’ve been able to contribute something to the drinking public.”

Since taking over the hotel, Mr Urquhart said he and fellow owner Alison Chapman worked to do something new with the menu, which soon expanded to the beer list.

“We wanted to create something that was different, we had created a pub that did something different

with food and we wanted to go past that,” he said.

“I love beer and I find nothing more boring than having to drink the same thing over and over.

“I’ve got a very broad palette and I like to share that with people, I’ve learnt a lot from being in this

The coming months are an important time to check for new serrated tussock germinations, which occur after summer and autumn rains.

Victorian Serrated Tussock Working Party (VSTWP) community engagement officer, Ivan Carter said recent summer rains and predicted moisture in autumn was good for broadacre crops, but unfortunately, will also be good for the growth of serrated tussock.

“We’re urging landowners to use any spare time they might have to survey their properties for serrated tussock plants in late summer and autumn,” he said.

“Controlling serrated tussock before the plant goes to seed is critical to prevent further spread, lost productivity and increased costs of control.”

Serrated tussock can germinate at any time of the year after rain, but

mostly in autumn and again in spring.

Plants and new seedlings can be removed manually using a pick or shovel or spot sprayed using a registered herbicide, depending on the size of the infestation.

Newly germinated seedlings will appear bright green, be erect and will stand out from the other grasses in a pasture.

The VSTWP has developed an online video and information sheets to help landowners identify this noxious weed, which can be viewed on its YouTube channel.

Mr Carter said before flowering in spring, serrated tussock has a lime green appearance.

“When flowering, the flower-heads have a distinctive purple colour developing as the seeds ripen in late spring and early summer,” he said.

“These features help serrated tussock stand out from the native

tussock grasses. “Serrated tussock has a fine leaf

and will roll smoothly between the index finger and thumb, while native Poa tussocks feel as though they have flat edges.

“It is vital to check for new germinations and remove them before they set seed, as a mature serrated tussock plant can produce thousands of seeds in a season, blowing up to 20 kilometres from the parent plant.”

Summer and autumn is also a good time to prepare for improving ground cover and competition for serrated tussock.

Having a healthy pasture and competitive ground cover is one of the most important aspects to weed management and serrated tussock is a prime example of a weed that does not like competition and well-established pastures.

Reminder to keep watch for tussock seedlings

Landowners are being urged to be on the lookout for new serrated tussock germinations.

Victorian farmers now have access to information to make more informed decisions when grazing stubble.

Agriculture Victoria veterinary officer Cathy Bunter said Agriculture Victoria has published a fact sheet on its website detailing the nutritional value of stubble to sheep and how to assess this on-farm.

It also provides tips on the optimal timing of grazing, the importance of licks and supplements and potential health issues associated with grazing stubble.

The fact sheet highlights the

importance of maintaining sufficient ground cover in paddocks to prevent the loss of topsoil.

Dr Bunter said grazing crop stubble can be a valuable source of nutrition to sheep in summer and autumn, while helping to reduce stubble loads.

“Animal health is always the priority. The feed quality of stubble varies significantly, so supplements are often needed,” she said.

Dr Bunter said the more residual grain in the paddock the higher the nutritional value to livestock.

Southern Wimmera farmer Nick Pekin said he was disappointed that parts of his cereal crops were

severely frosted. However, the heads on late-

developing tillers were still green at harvest time on the lighter soils, and while these were not harvested, they provided excellent feed for his sheep.

Go online to the Agriculture Victoria website to view the fact sheet at agriculture.vic.gov.au

The fact sheet was funded by the Victorian Government’s Smarter, Safer Farms initiative through its skills program which provides targeted training to build capability in financial literacy, risk management, farm planning and adaption to climate change.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

The last few months have bought new challenges to our region as COVID-19 cases have surged.

In the first month of 2022, many households have contracted COVID-19 or found themselves isolated as close contacts.

The disruption and stress of the pandemic have made returning to work, school, and social events difficult.

The spread of the omicron variant has made it clearer than ever that health care workers provide one of the most vital services to the community.

Here in Central Goldfields, we have incredible health care workers who put the community’s health above their personal safety every day.

Our nurses and doctors work hard and provide excellent care. They deserve the best possible

resources and support. A recent report from the

Productivity Commission found that Victoria’s health care workers are working in the most under-resourced health system in Australia. Despite what the Premier says, the Andrews Labor Government spends less per person than any other state on health.

We have fewer beds, fewer staff, and longer emergency room wait times. This under-resourcing started before the pandemic, and in the last two years, health care workers have continually been forced to do more with less; less than they need and less than any other state in Australia.

Significant disruption to elective surgery is also taking a toll. Many locals have contacted me who are stuck on seemingly never-ending

waiting lists for vital, life-changing surgery.

The word ‘elective’ really can’t be applied to so many of these surgeries. Locals with cancer, chronic pain or debilitating injuries face months or even years waiting for care. In many cases, patients cannot work until they have their surgery.

The Andrews Government must invest in the health care system. We need a plan to get surgery back on track and fix the backlogs.

Victorians have suffered through longer and harsher lockdowns than any other state. The Premier promised us that these lockdowns would buy him time to get ready for a surge of COVID cases.

The last few months have shown that he wasn’t prepared and didn’t have a plan. Victorians deserve Australia’s best health care system, and we need a government committed to delivering it.

In our Council Plan 2021-2025 there is a special section on Key Opportunities for Growth given the very high importance and focus council is placing on growth.

Council commits to “Champion the central location of Central Goldfields Shire to advantage” and to promote our aerodrome, passenger rail and freight and, future road connectivity.

The Maryborough Aerodrome has been a priority of this council from our first day as we understood our community’s concern about securing the best outcome for the aerodrome to support the community.

At our first meeting the priority need to meet with key stakeholders was moved as urgent business and that very successful meeting led to a great deal of further consultation with the president of the aerodrome committee and discussion within council.

We recognised there were some

complex legacy issues, especially leases, which needed to be resolved before we could focus on the future and I appreciate the hard work of our CEO and staff to address these matters.

In April 2021, council settled many issues for the aerodrome and established an expert community task force led by Neil Arbuthnot to make recommendations on its future. The task force has met on a number of occasions and recently met to brief council.

Council has asked the task force to formally report to council and it will be good to receive and debate that report and share it with the community.

The future of the aerodrome remains a key priority and the process council established is really working.

Iconic monument

Bristol Hill Tower has been an iconic monument of Maryborough since 1933 with its construction being commenced and completed during a time where the country was going through a great depression and hardship.

Local architect and teacher Mr T.J. Peck designed the tower and supervised the construction with the assistance from masonry workers, carpenters and labour secured by the Unemployed Relief Committee.

Mr Peck was a teacher for over 45 years at the Maryborough Technical School. Construction of Bristol Hill Tower gave local townspeople and tradespeople the motivation to create a lasting legacy for the town for generations to come.

Following a discussion with Cr Grace La Vella at the end of January, we were discussing the ongoing issue with the closure of the tower with no likely resolution within the near future. It is for this reason I’ve decided to raise my concern and disappointment.

I decided to have a stroll around Bristol Hill Tower and see for myself what obvious issues are present that have resulted in the tower being closed for the past six months.

In my eyes with my 55 years experience in the building trade, I could not see much structurally to declare it unsafe however not being an engineer or building surveyor my view means nothing.

What I did see was a historic building lacking maintenance over the years. There is a small crack running down the tower on the south side of the building and as most people know a cylinder is stronger than a rectangle or square.

I do declare I have a vested interest in the historical nature of this building, my great uncle Tom Elliott was involved with the construction and generously donated bluestone steps which came from the old Maryborough Gaol in Inkerman Street and were recommissioned to become part of the new tower.

This Maryborough monument needs to be maintained and preserved as it’s such an important part of the town’s history. I’m sure everyone who’s lived here has at some time driven around and climbed the tower.

The ongoing neglect to maintain the structure has played a pivotal part in the tower now being closed and declared unsafe for visitors.

Currently an engineer’s report is being prepared to outline the issues with the existing building. Once the report is complete we should be in a position to fully understand the extent of depreciation and damage and the steps required for this to be rectified.

Installation of security cameras around the tower could be another measure implemented, the purpose to deter any further vandalism and damage.

Ongoing management and maintenance of the tower and its surroundings needs to be under the shire umbrella, as a community we care about our town and its history, we need to learn from it and maintain it moving into the future.

I am more than happy to make a donation towards the reopening of Bristol Hill Tower.

It’s a pity we don’t have the likes of Jeff McKay around today, one of the last to use common sense and mathematics.

— Daryl Maffescioni, Maryborough

New species Three previously unknown

eucalypts species found growing in the local area will be featured in the Maryborough Field Naturalists Club’s 70th birthday exhibition in March.

The three new trees were identified by the highly regarded botanist Kevin Rule just a few years ago.

One is the Pyrenees Gum (Eucalyptus pyrenea), a medium to tall tree which grows in the Pyrenees west of Avoca.

This tree appears to be a member of the grey gum family and grows in limited numbers in a small area of the Pyrenees.

This tree might have emerged as a separate species when isolated when much of Victoria was isolated by water after the last ice age.

This is a lovely, medium sized tree with attractive bark and deep dark green leaves.

A new species of stringybark was identified by Mr Rule growing near Clunes, but a club member has identified it also growing south east of Avoca.

Ironically, attention to this tree was first drawn by our club half a century ago when we thought it was a Brown Stringybark (Eucalyptus baxteri) which normally grows in wetter areas, such as around Ballarat or the Grampians.

This new tree, called the Goldfields Stringybark has grey bark, similar to our common local Red Stringybark (Eucalyptus macrorhyncha) but has rounder, green leaves similar to Brown Stringybark.

The third tree is a peppermint which has been found near Talbot and so far, only 29 examples appear to have been found.

Leaves and information on these trees will be displayed at the exhibition in the atrium next to the

Maryborough Library over March 17, 18 and 19.

Is it fair? We would have been better off

without the Djokovic debacle, but it’s an ill wind that blows no good! To me two things stand out.

Firstly, the world now knows that Australia is a country governed by the rule of law and the law is applied without discrimination.

Secondly, we were reminded about the refugees still held in captivity with no hope of release.

There are over 200 of them held at the Park Hotel, Manus Island and at Nauru, all young men and many approved as genuine refugees. The cost to us is billions a year.

They are held simply to demonstrate that ‘illegals’ have no hope of ever being accepted into the Australian community. The questions arise, is this justice?; Is it fair?; Do we have any real right to treat fellow humans in such a cruel and contemptible way?

I can’t justify the answer ‘yes’, particularly when there’s another solution, simple, low cost and humane.

To stop the people smuggling business, all we have to do is to make a special arrangement with the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). The first step of this, would be to release

the so called ‘illegals’ who have been locked away for years.

All of these are young men who would be very willing to fill the vacant rural jobs so desperately needed.

Then, when the inevitable boatload of, for example, 55 smuggled hopefuls arrive, load them onto a plane and fly them directly to the nearest UN Refugee camp.

There they should be exchanged with 55 refugees, who have been processed, approved for Visas and waiting their turn. Fly those 55 back to Australia on the same plane, issue the Visas on arrival and assimilate them into the community.

This means that any person who pays a smuggler is actually buying free passage for a stranger. I don’t think any of these illegal refugees are philanthropists.

It would be appropriate at the same time to include the Biloela family into community assimilation. Winners everywhere and thisshameful chapter of Australian history is concluded.

— David Murphy, Maryborough

Competition abandoned

I can’t believe the Maryborough Tennis Association has had to abandon Saturday competition due to lack of players.

Years ago there were tennis clubs everywhere. To name a few, Lawn, VRI, St Augustine’s, Methodists, Congregational, MKM, Cal Gully, Timor, Carisbrook, Talbot, Rathscar, Dunluce, Natte Yallock, Eddington, Moliagul, Dunolly, Bealiba, Barkly, Avoca and many more further on, each club having several grade levels.

There were also many private courts as well that were used regularly including ours.

What are people doing, especially teenagers?

Are we becoming a lazy society — couch potatoes, playing technology or just roaming the streets looking for trouble. Tennis is still popular, just look at the Australian Open.

Making decisions around colour and designs for a new make over in the home or work space will be on your mind. The side of your nature that likes to entertain or be social will come out to play.

There’s likely to something you have been giving a lot of thought to when it comes to some form of technology. By mid week you will start to feel happier with your decisions. You may decide there are some changes you need to make around the house. This may mean stripping back and remodelling a room although. Adapting the space you have a bit more imaginatively may help. Having your own space around the home is important, especially if you have been feeling penned in.

Choosing your words carefully will play a big part this month. Measure out anything you want to say, put careful consideration and thought into how and what you want to say before committing to a text, email or even conversation. This will help you to structure things in a very positive and dynamic way. More consideration maybe needed when it comes to siblings, neighbours or immediate family members. Your powers of analysis are now crystal clear.

Your desire to improve your financial lot is now very much more stronger than usual. After an enormous

amount of persistence there is starting to be a breakthrough. Keep with the plan. If something is requiring a little more willpower and determination keep going for it. If you have drifted a little, now is the time you can get yourself back on track. Thinking about your home and where you live will see you thinking about making some changes.

You have an opportunity to embrace what’s exciting and fresh. Some people will be leaving your world and some new and joyous entrances of people will also begin to happen. It’s all about the big picture and what you want to create. You could find yourself in a position the requires you be more of a leader. You have black and white decisions to make, this could be concerned with something that just isn’t working. Where you feel heavy baggage, that’s where you need to make some big choices.

Understanding what your key needs are, is going to be important as you move forward this month. You have an opportunity to set sail into a new direction, career, or avenue of study. This is the time to clarify things in general. Understand what others are expecting from you, as make plans to move forward with your new. Don’t let your generous nature give in to someone who is seemingly in a difficult situation. Being there for them is different to sacrificing yourself and time.

If you’re wanting to change a job or reform the world you live in, the next month is going to be a critical time. Something very magical can unfold for you this month, it may mean you need to let go of the rather meticulous and precise way you have of approaching situations. These qualities have their place in your life, but let them stop you from being more spontaneous. You may receive an unexpected invitation. This is a great time for you to mix and mingle.

You will have to really apply yourself when it comes to anything you want to achieve. The greater the perspiration and desire the greater the results will be. Keeping a level of respect as well as having fun is needed. By mid week you will begin to feel much more in the flow. There’s potential for you to go for something new and dynamic. Keep an awareness of what it taken to get to this time. Being aware of the psychological side of the situation is important if you want to gain traction.

RITA AND SANDY • Age: Rita 4 years, Sandy 16 months • Microchip no. 978101083667303 & 978101083681724 • Located: Maryborough • Adoption fee $225 (for the pair) • Source no: RE100602 Sandy & Rita are sweet girls who would love a chance to have a special home of their own. They came to us from a property where they were being hand-fed by the workers. We believe Rita is Sandy's mama. As they had only had minimal human interaction they have adapted really well to positive interaction with humans. They are still a bit shy but will accept pats and rub around your legs, are very inquisitive and can be picked up. They are very food orientated and will eat anything you put down for them. They may hide when they go to a new home but that is normal for any cat that changes to a new environment with new sounds, smells and new people. Rita has been the more confident of the two since they have been in care. They have not been around dogs or children. They have been ok with other cats that were part of their colony but we can't say how they would interact with ones they don't know. A quiet, patient household would be the best for these girls so they can settle into their new life at their own pace. They might never be cats to sit on your lap but that doesn't mean that they won’t show you love. Both these beautiful girls need a patient home who understands where they have come from and how far they have come along. They need an owner who will give them all the time they need to properly settle into their new home.

Wickets fly at Beaufort in Crows and Colts Phelans clash

ASHLYNE McINNES Colts Phelans headed out to

Beaufort on Saturday for round 10 and were able to defend their total from the Crows, despite a bowling onslaught from both teams.

Given the difference in results between Colts and Beaufort in the one-day half of the season, with Colts having won two from three games and Beaufort dealt three straight losses, it’s no real surprise that Colts got the win on Saturday.

What was a surprise, was just how good both teams were with the ball

in hand with the win coming from Colts’ superiority with the bat.

Beaufort won the toss and sent the visitors in first, with Wayne Stubbings and Kane Shepherd set to open until Stubbings was bowled for a duck.

Rhys Wagstaff and Shepherd were the first scoring pair, with the duo making 46 runs before Wagstaff (11) was bowled LBW by Lachlan Oddie.

Colts captain Rhys Egan (1) was in next, but lasted just a couple of runs before Oddie stuck again, leaving Shepherd to buddy up with Luke Tatchell.

Fourteen runs eventuated from this pair before Shepherd (31) was caught and bowled by Crows youngster Ben Morcom-Knight,

leaving Colts at 4/67. Tatchell and Jackson Gordon put

the wind back in the Colts’ sails with 30 runs, but this resurgence came to an end when Tatchell (9) was bowled by Cam McLeod.

Gordon and young Sebastian Borg propelled the side into triple figures with a 24-run unity, but this was stunted when Gordon (33) was claimed as AJ Bourke’s first of four wickets, leaving Colts at 7/123.

Richard Clark came in at this point however Borg (6) was next to succumb to the bowling of Bourke, with his replacement Dayne Baker (5) following shortly thereafter.

Patrick Pritchard had no sooner pulled on his helmet before he was dismissed by Zac McLeod, seeing

Colts at 9/144 with Clark and Nick Henderson set to close.

Clark and Henderson were able to take the side to a score of 162 before Bourke finished off his power play, bowling Henderson (2) and leaving Clark (28*) without a partner.

Colts made 162 runs in 35.3 overs, with 4/29 from Bourke in the latter half of the innings helping to cut off what could have been one of the side’s bigger scores of the season.

This total would prove far too hard for Beaufort to reach in the reply, with just 93 runs coming from 39.3 overs seeing the side fall 69 runs short.

Craig Grant and Nick Stabbins were the Crows best runscorers with 13 runs apiece, followed by Oddie and Morcom-Knight with 12 each

and Bourke and Bryce Nicholson with 11 each — accounting for two thirds of Beaufort’s score.

Wickets came fairly cheaply for Colts’ five wicket takers, but especially so for Pritchard who impressed with a massive 5/28 in 5.3 overs.

Other wickets came from Henderson (2/10) and singles each to Clark (1/22), Baker (1/11) and Shepherd (1/6).

Colts are unmoved in second place on the ladder after the win while Beaufort has dropped from third into fourth position, overtaken by Clunes.

Colts has the bye this weekend while Beaufort will host Clunes this Saturday in an attempt to regain its ladder placing.

Maryborough chosen to host grand finalsContinued from Back Page

Mildura turned up the heat in the deciding quarter, outscoring their hosts 21-15, but luckily for Maryborough their lead held them up as 70-63 victors by the final siren.

Coach Claire Blower was the top scorer for the night with 19 points, followed by Annie Collins and Maddy Egan with 16 points apiece.

Collins and Egan were both missing when Maryborough played Mildura throughout the home and away season and were extremely welcome additions on Saturday contributing greatly to the end result.

Emma Pedretti and Maggie Tranter played their role beautifully, hunting down the ball at either end of the court, while also adding four and eight points respectively to the end score.

This victory will see the Maryborough Lady Blazers into the grand final for just the second time ever, with a historic win now on the cards.

In a repeat of 2020, this grand final game will also be played against rivals Bendigo, however, after taking on hosting duties last season for the first time, the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre was again selected to be the

playing venue for the North West finals this season meaning the Blazers will have a home court advantage this weekend.

Maryborough defeated Bendigo by 12 points when they met on January 22 of this year, suggesting the Blazer girls have a real shot at winning their first ever championship in just a few days time.

While the club was overjoyed for its women’s players, there is a great sense of sadness for the men’s team which went down by 16 points in its semi on Saturday night.

The men’s Blazers got to play at home after finishing top two and headed in with confidence after beating the Braves the week before by 15 points.

Bendigo’s side was a bit different from last weekend, as was the Blazers’ with Lachlan Drummond back on the court after some time off with injury.

Bendigo came flying out of the gates in the opening quarter, outscoring Maryborough 22-18.

This rattled the home side, which dropped the second 19-14 to sit at a nine-point deficit at halftime.

Maryborough’s endurance usually holds in good stead for a third-quarter comeback and the side played its best basketball in third

time period, but still didn’t come out on top with the Braves winning 17-16 to edge their lead out to 10 points ahead of the closing term.

It was always going to be hard for the Blazers to claw back from this deficit, but the Braves weren’t taking any chances and ran out the remainder of the game with everything they had, winning the fourth 24-18 to make up the 16-point victory.

Recruit Will Hynes was best on for the Blazers, shooting 23 points and putting in the hard yards all over the court.

Hynes was the target for most scoring opportunities but Brady Neill (11 points), Darcy Bond (8), Zac Mortlock (8), Harry Butler (7) and Drummond (7) all got on the board in a meaningful way.

Bond and Butler were reluctant to give Bendigo a single inch and really invested themselves into the defensive side of the game.

The grand finals are both being played in Maryborough this Saturday, with the women’s game at 5.30 pm and the men’s title between Echuca and Bendigo from 8 pm.

Pies move up the ladder after two-wicket win over MKM

ASHLYNE McINNES Clunes has moved up into

third place on the ladder after defeating MKM by two wickets in a hard fought clash at Bull Millgate on Saturday.

The Magpies were determined to make up for a few weeks of tough results by defeating the side on the bottom of the ladder, however as predicted, the Mill wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Clunes won the toss and sent MKM in to bat first, with the Mill losing one of its openers, Ben Hoban for no score at all.

This made way for brothers Liam and Joel Radlof to unite at the crease with the pair making 73 runs in partnership before Troy Thomson, who had dismissed Hoban, claimed his second wicket in a row, bowling Liam (21).

After this, Joel Radlof and Chris Freeman added 15 runs together, before Riley Coppick struck, claiming Radlof (56) as the third wicket of the day

Kieran Johns was bowled for a

dismissed, with the scoreboard reading 6/123.

Just a single run was added over the next three dismissals, with Lewis Patten, Khan (20) and Mitch Whelan knocked off one after the other.

Branton Hocking (2*) and Brohdie Smyth (3*) used up the remaining balls, with MKM posting a score of 9/132 which would be hard to defend against a determined Magpie side.

Clunes’ best bowlers were Sam Williams with 3/11, Riley Coppick with 3/40 and Thomson with 2/15.

The Maggies needed 37 overs to come to a winning score of 8/133, two wickets in the clear of a frustrated MKM.

Clunes’ batting started very slowly, with the first four batsmen, Williams (4), Jeremy Beggs (5), Mark Allen (11) and Mitch Coppick (3) dismissed for a combined 35 runs.

Captain Aidan Thompson and Brendan Ingram got the side fired up with 26 runs in partnership, boosting the side to 61 before Thompson (21) was caught and bowled by Mitch Whelan as the fifth wicket of the reply.

Ingram and Riley Coppick built

this to 79 runs before Whelan struck again, dismissing Ingram (14), to see the Pies 53 runs away from victory.

Shehzad Muhammad and Riley Coppick put 14 runs up before Muhammad was dismissed LBW by Freeman, 8/93 leaving Coppick and Callum Newton, in his first game of the season, to carry the baton.

This pair was instrumental in the win, making 24 runs to boost Clunes to 8/117 with Coppick’s (33) dismissal by Hoban.

Tenth man, Thomson and Newton needed 17 runs to win the game from this point and that’s exactly what they came up with, with Clunes ending the game on 8/133, with three overs left in the bank.

MKM fought until the bitter end, with Jaxon Smyth leading the bowling with 3/18, followed by Whelan with 3/41 and Freeman and Hoban with one wicket apiece.

This result means MKM is very unlikely to move up the ladder out of last place this season, with just four games left, two of which are against the top two teams.

Clunes has moved into third place after its third win of the season and is likely to enjoy its fourth this weekend against Beaufort.

ASHLYNE McINNES The Maryborough Blazers

started their night with elation, but ended it with heartbreak, with the women’s side beating Mildura to qualify for the grand final for just the second time in history, while the men’s side was unfortunately knocked off by Bendigo, ending their dream of a championship redemption.

Playing at home, the plan for the

weekend was to repeat the 2020 semi finals where both the men’s and women’s Blazers qualified for the grand final for the first time ever.

While the men’s side was successful during 2020, named the North West Men’s Division Champions, the women’s side was defeated in its first ever grand final appearance.

This double-championship dream was again shattered last season

when the men’s side qualified, while the women’s side dipped out of semis.

The men unfortunately went on to lose the grand final to the Bendigo Braves last season and were determined to get back there this time around to right the ultimate wrong, but Bendigo again broke the hearts of the Blazer nation which watched on as the side defeated Maryborough 82-66 on Saturday night.

This was a crushing flip for the home crowd which had just cheered the Lady Blazers on to a seven-point victory over Mildura, a side which they had lost to during the home and away season.

The victory wasn’t easy by any means, and largely hung off of a very impressive third quarter which saw the side break free.

The opening two terms were fairly neck-and-neck with Maryborough

outscoring the visitors 17-16 in the first and 14-12 in the second to sit three points up at halftime.

Knowing from this point all it would take for Mildura to even the score was a shot from outside the key, Maryborough dug deep with a 24-14 third term which put the side 13 points up by the game’s final break.
