Survey: Attracting new customers, adding/updating equipment among 2015 priorities

Attracting new customers is the top 2015 business priority for the majority of dry cleaners (34.7%),

according to results from January’s American Dryclean-er Your Views survey.

Other dry cleaners say their top priority is to “add/update equipment” (22.5%), “explore extra services or new opportunities” (12.2%), “spruce up [their] store(s)” (8.2%) or “increase prices and/or cut costs” (8.2%).

Another 14.3% of dry cleaners polled listed “other” top business priorities, such as growing piece counts, in-creasing wedding gown cleaning and preservation busi-ness, or maintaining their store’s “high level of quality.”

Looking back at 2014, 56% of cleaners say their opera-tion met “some” of its goals, while another 22% say their operation “met all” of its goals. Sixteen percent of respon-dents admitted that their operation “did not meet our” goals. Only a small percentage (6%) set no goals at all.

American Drycleaner invited respondents to discuss the goals they met or didn’t meet, and why. The answers were diverse, as illustrated by these examples:

• “We had hoped to streamline and promote some of the specialty services ... (but) personnel turnover and retraining has slowed efforts.”

• “We exceeded our piece count goals and successfully remodeled our laundry and assembly departments.”

• “We (have) been focusing on routes and counter con-versions. Routes are up 35%.”

In terms of top personal priorities for 2015, nearly 30% of dry cleaners polled would like to “get orga-nized.” Another 24% want to lose weight or improve their fitness, while spending time with family is the No. 1 priority for 18% of respondents. A small percentage (8.9%) want to quit smoking/drinking.

Twenty percent of respondents listed “other” personal priorities, including reducing stress, spending more time pursuing hobbies or preparing for retirement.

The majority of dry cleaners are optimistic about meeting their business and personal priorities for the new year, as 47.9% say they have a “good chance” to ac-complish both goals. Twenty-five percent say they have a “50/50 chance,” while 20.8% say there is “no doubt” they will accomplish their goals.

While American Drycleaner’s Your Views survey presents a snapshot of trade audience viewpoints, it should not be considered scientific; percentages may not add up to 100% due to rounding. ADC

Keep in mind that each and every item has its own set of variables: fiber, weave, color, dyeing method, trim

and stain content.Glance at every item and its care

label. This can be done while a gar-ment is awaiting classification, dur-ing run classification, or while being loaded into the cleaning machine.

A water reference on the care label is grounds to at least consider wet cleaning. There is no rule that says you cannot pre-spot on the wet side an item to be wet-cleaned. The heat from the steam gun will

multiply the chemical action of a laundry POG, and wet-side pre-spotting with the appropriate tannin or protein formula makes those usually hard-to-remove beverage or

blood stains flush more easily during wet cleaning.If you determine the need to pre-spot mineral stains

(paint, oil, grease, glue), do so on the dry side and then dry-clean the item. On the other hand, tannin and protein stains that are anything but light should be pre-spotted on the wet side. Even a drycleaning machine at the maximum 75% relative humidity allowed by the Federal Trade Commission will not completely remove half a cup of coffee with cream and sugar. Be sure to com-pletely dry the area and apply a leveling agent before dry cleaning anything that has been spotted wet-side.

The first step in wet-side stain removal is to flush the area over the vacuum nose of the board with steam. This will break the surface tension and spread and expand the fabric, and heat the area to enhance chemical action.

Some stains may require nothing more, but the next step is to apply neutral synthetic detergent (NSD) and

light mechanical action. Flush the area over the vacuum nose of the board.

About one-third of wet-side stains, both tannin and protein, are removed using these first two steps. The ability to do this at little risk of a pH color change is a strong endorsement for two steps that will take less than 30 seconds combined.

Stains that originate from a plant are referred to as tannin stains, and stains that originate from an animal are referred to as protein stains. A majority of tannin stain-removal agents have an acid pH, and a majority of protein stain-removal agents have an alkali pH. If you are not absolutely sure of the stain’s content, start with the tannin stain-removal agent.

I have a more difficult time with tannin stains than I do with protein stains. I keep four different tannin for-mulas within easy reach. The mildest is my first choice for silk, rayon, dark colors and other fragile situations. The next is slightly more aggressive and is the choice for known stable colors, fibers and construction. The third is reserved for stubborn stains with which I am confident I can “push” harder. The last chemical tool, before con-sidering spot bleaching, is general formula. All of these chemical tools are used over the solid portion of the board, applying light mechanical action, then flushing out the stain over the vacuum nose of the board.

Protein stains are easier for me to remove; this may be the result of my liberal use of a digester at the spotting board. If I think a protein stain may present a problem, I flush the area with steam to heat and moisten it, then ap-ply a digester. I place that item aside and proceed to spot any other items or to lay out/classify my next run.

When I come back to the item, the digester has pen-etrated and softened the protein stain. I flush the stain over the vacuum nose of the board. I then proceed to a mild protein formula over the solid portion of the board, followed by light mechanical action. This is then flushed over the vacuum nose of the spotting board. If any trace of the stain remains, I proceed to a stronger protein for-mula, some of which may give off a hint of ammonia. It is rare that the stain will withstand digester and two different protein formulas.

When faced with an unknown stain, or a combination stain of both tannin and protein (coffee with cream, for ex-ample), remember to start with a steam flush, followed by NSD and a steam flush, followed by a tannin formula. ADC

Tide Dry Cleaners opens second location in Southwest FloridaConsolidated Cleaners Inc., in collaboration with Agile Pursuits Franchising Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, recently opened the newest Tide Dry Cleaners store in Bonita Springs, Fla.

The new location is the second in Florida, and the 27th Tide Dry Cleaners location nationwide, applying Tide’s 65 years of fabricare experience, GreenEarth® cleaning technology, and concierge services to meet customers’ needs.

Lapels Dry Cleaning coming to Motor CityLapels Dry Cleaning, headquartered in Hanover, Mass., recently came to a 16-store development agreement with Shambho LLC to bring the “Future of Dry Cleaning” here to the greater Detroit area. The first Lapels store is slated to open in late first quarter or early second quarter of 2015.

“We’re extremely excited about opening in Detroit, as it represents Lapels Dry Cleaning’s first location in Michigan,” says a spokesperson for Shambho, a Detroit-based development firm that is also a multi-unit fran-

chisee of Great Clips hair salons in the area. “Lapels, with its green initiative, truly represents the future of dry cleaning, and we think the response from people in greater Detroit will be tremendous.”

Lapels has pioneered its eco-friendly dry cleaning ex-perience over the past dozen years, the franchisor says. Most recently, it signed a partnership agreement with GreenEarth® for its newer locations. Lapels claims its cleaning process leaves no odor and is gentler on clothes, thus lengthening garment life.

Lapels’ emphasis on customer service starts with a “warm and inviting reception area, with friendly cus-tomer service representatives, and alteration services,” the franchisor says. Lapels offers customers “Automatic Rewards,” with customers earning credit toward free dry cleaning for every dollar they spend; loyalty programs; a VIP program that eliminates the need to wait in line; the use of a 24-hour drop-off service, and free home deliv-ery to all customers. Same-day service is available with pick-up after 5 p.m.

Kaeser Compressors breaks ground on building expansionKaeser Compressors, a maker of industrial air compres-sors, has broken ground on a new building expansion to its Fredericksburg, Va., headquarters.

Lapels announced that Lawrence Fried-man, chief executive officer and one of the chain’s three founders, has assumed sole ownership of its franchise organization. “Lapels has grown rapidly, and we are in the process of stringently standardizing all of our services and branding from store hours to signage,” he says. Friedman has instituted new marketing and opera-tions committees to expand upon the company’s efforts. A customer liaison position has also been added to help franchisees implement Lapels’ methods and programs, and the company will dedicate almost $500,000 toward the expansion of franchise infrastructure and marketing programs. … America’s Best Cleaners (ABC), a market-ing consortium of high-end and couture cleaners, recent-ly held the first of its accreditation workshops at the East Coast School of Drycleaning. Sponsored by Kreussler USA and A.L. Wilson Chemical Co., the workshop was organized by Ed D’Elicio, ABC executive director, and Chris White, of member cleaner Madame Paulette.

25 YEARS AGO. Joseph L. Mayberry, former president and chairman of R.R. Street & Co., died at his home in Clearwater, Fla., on Dec. 29. Mayberry had a career with Street’s that began in 1936 and spanned more than 50 years. He became company president in 1960 and guided the company’s expansion and growth. He main-tained a keen interest in the company’s affairs until the time of his death. … “Actions by Congress and the Oc-cupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have set the agenda for much of IFI’s fight on behalf of the industry in 1990,” says IFI’s vice president and assistant general manager, William Fisher. “These actions are at best ill-conceived and, at worst, malicious and unwar-ranted.” Seen among the most critical actions at present are the Clean Air Act amendments in Congress, the OSHA regulation on perc vapor exposure, and EPA’s continued attempts to label perc as a “probable” human carcinogen.

50 YEARS AGO. What is VIP service? That’s what many customers ask the counter girls at Smith Cleaners in Oak Lawn, Ill. And then they smile when they learn

the answer: It is for Very Impatient People who need their clothes cleaned in a hurry on Saturday. It wasn’t long ago that Hugh Smith, recent NID president, said he’d never offer a rush service; he felt it was contrary to

everything his plant stood for. Yet some people asked why Smith’s couldn’t give Saturday service when they needed it. Today, one of the cleaner’s ads proudly announces that when customers “have an emergency, we will put all the experts necessary on the job and get your garment cleaned fast … in just four hours.” Not many customers have used the

service yet, but they like knowing it’s available when or if they need it. … The G.F. Thomas company in San Francisco, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, claims to have the oldest drycleaning plant in the coun-try. A company pamphlet from the Gay ’90s advertised, “We were born by the name of Thomas, and we intend to live, dye and die by the name our ancestors left us.” Today, Emile Thomas Sr. and Jr. are the third and fourth generations to run the firm.

75 YEARS AGO. There is no better way for a cleaner to justify the prices he charges, or to build the presence of his plant, than to promote his knowledge of fashions and fabrics in advertising. The time to begin this promotion is now, with Easter coming early this year. American women have just got on to a trick that French women have known for many years, and their discovery promis-es to influence much of their Easter shopping this season. They are learning how to make one costume do the work of three, and they’re out for all the help they can get. Right here is where the cleaner comes in. Through his advertising, he can tell his customers what fabrics and colors are in the fashion spotlight, what goes with what, how to make the same dress look entirely different for various occasions, and how to make a costume keep its store-fresh look through all its transformations.
