Maths: Multiplication
LO: to add equal groups
Yesterday we looked at making our own equal groups. Today we will begin
adding equal groups together.
For the following equal groups, choose your level of challenge:
Bronze challenge: represent each group with loose parts (e.g.
pasta, pebbles etc.) Can you count the total?
Silver challenge: Draw these equal groups pictorially and record
your totals.
Gold challenge: Can you think of another way to record this?
Think of the different maths we have learnt in the past.
Groups of 5
Groups of 5 Groups of 10
Look at these bikes. Each bike has 2 wheels. There are 5 bikes. I could say
that there are 5 equal groups of 2 wheels.
I want to find out how many wheels there are all together.
I can do this by representing the wheels with objects, or pictorially as an
image:
I can count that there are 10 wheels altogether.

grapheme cards below
Maths: Multiplication
LO: to add equal groups
1. Can you write repeated additions for the following equal groups?
2. Instead of counting the objects individually to find your total, you could
use your knowledge of counting in 5s and10s?
Challenge:
Bronze challenge: Can you represent the following repeated additions as
images?
Silver challenge: Can you find the totals by counting in either 2s, 5s or 10s?
Gold challenge: Can you create your own repeated additions by making
equal groups of objects around the house?
1. 5 + 5 + 5 =
2. 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 =
3. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 =
Yesterday we looked at these bikes. We decided that there were 5
groups of 2 wheels. We also counted that there were 10 wheels all
together.
Instead of using pictorial images to represent this, we could use a number
sentence.
2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10
This is called a repeated addition.
The number 2 represents the 2 wheels, instead of using the image.
