Program Notes

Lords of Greenwich (2008) Robert Sheldon

Lords of Greenwich was commissioned by the Brandon Valley, SD Band Parents, Inc. and is dedicated to Mr. Bruce Wildes, honoring his 33 years of service to the district as a band director. Mr. Wildes' love for British brass band music moved the composer to work in the style of an authentic British folk tune, drawing inspiration from Holst, Elgar, and Vaughan Williams. The namesake of the title is Greenwich, a river city in Great Britain, and at one time a departure point for emigrant ships. It is believed that Mr. Wildes' descendants left from Greenwich for the United States.

The piece is presented in three distinct segments. A brisk, lively theme opens the work and is followed by an expressive and lyrical middle section. Music reminiscent of a processional march follows, which is juxtaposed with material from the opening theme. (Kevin Kessler)

Cajun Folk Songs (1990) Frank Ticheli

Frank Ticheli composed Cajun Folk Songs in 1990 when commissioned by the Murchison Middle School Band from Austin, Texas. As the title implies, folk songs are the basis for this work. "Cajuns" are descendants of the early French-Acadian colonists who had settled in an area now known as Novia Scotia. In 1755, they were evicted from their lands during a time when France and Great Britian were at war over New France (present day Quebec). These settlers eventually made their way to South Louisiana, which at the time was still under control of the French colonial government.

"La Belle et la Capitaine" and "Belle" were recorded in their original form by John and Alan Lomax, a father-son duo who traveled throughout America recording live music in the 1930s and 1940s. "La Belle et le Capitaine" tells the tale of a young girl who fakes her own death to avoid being seduced by a captain. "Belle" is the story of a young man who had gone off to Texas, only to receive word that his beloved had fallen ill. Upon his return he finds her unconscious. In an effort to get money to get treatment for her, he sells his horse, only to have her pass away. (Carl Rowles)

The Seal Lullaby (2011) Eric Whitacre

The Seal. Lullaby was originally composed in 2004 as a short piece of film music for a potential animated film based on Rudyard Kipling's short story The White Seal to be released by Dream Works Animation. After submitting the piece to the film studio as an example of his ability to write the music for this production, the composer did not hear back from the company for weeks. Finally, after calling Dream Works to discover what happened to his piece and whether or not they enjoyed the composition, an executive said "Oh ... we decided to make Kung Fu Panda instead." Eric Whitacre's piece was later set in a choral arrangement and then re-transcribed to a band setting in 2011. The piece is based on the opening poem of Rudyard Kipling's story entitled "The Seal Lullaby."

Oh! Hush thee, my baby, the night is behind us, And black are the waters that sparkled so green. The moon, o'er the combers, looks downward to find us, At rest in the hollows that rustle between.

Where billow meets billow, then soft by thy pillow, Oh weary wee flipperling curl at thy easel · The storm shall not wake thee, nor shark overtake thee, Asleep in the arms of the slow swinging seas!

(Steven Riley)

Fate of the Gods (2001) Steven Reineke

Fate of the Gods is a programmatic piece inspired by Norse mythology. It represents the story of Ragnarok, which culminates in an incredible war between the forces of good and evil. It is during this battle that Norse icons such as Loki, Thor, and Odin meet their fate. The war brings about the destruction of the world resulting in the earth being submerged in water. Following the destruction, a new world would rise and it would develop being only filled with joy and abundance.

Steven Reineke is a composer and conductor who is beginning his third season as the Principal Pops Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. Reineke began his career as a composer and arranger with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra where he composed over one hundred orchestral arrangements that have been performed worldwide. Mr. Reineke has also guest conducted numerous orchestras around the world including the Boston Pops Orchestra and Chicago Symphony at Ravinia. (Steven Riley)

Under the Double Eagle March (c. 1885) Josef Franz Wagner

Under the Double Eagle was penned by Josef Franz Wagner who had a distinguished career as an Austrian military bandmaster. During his career he spent fourteen years as the bandmaster of the 47th Infantry Band in Trient, which was considered the finest military band in the country in the late 19th century. Following his retirement from the military, Wagner organized a successful band and orchestra while continuing to compose throughout the rest of his life.

The title, Under the Double Eagle refers to the double eagle in the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The march became a popular selection in the programs of John Philip Sousa and was recorded several times for the Victor Talking Machine Company at the turn of the century. (Steven Riley)

With Heart and Voice (2001) David R. Gillingham

With Heart and Voice was written to mark the 25th anniversary of Apple Valley, Minnesota High School in 2001. The piece is based on the Christian Henry Bateman hymn "Come Christians Join to Sing," a song that also serves as the school's alma mater. A line from the hymn, "let all, with heart and voice, before his throne rejoice," served as inspiration for the title.

The piece begins with fragments of the hymn in a hesitant manner, representing the feelings of anxiety and uneasiness that accompany the beginnings of a new school. New material that composer David Gillingham refers to as the "mission theme," is introduced, representing the school's commitment to excellence in academics and the performing arts. A highly rhythmic fugue, driven by a variety of percussion instruments, embodies the challenge of pursuing the goals of the school. The work ends with a joining of the two themes in a triumphant finale, signifying the school's celebration of 25 years of existence. (Kevin Kessler)

Voci Sacre (2004) Luigi Zaninelli

Voci Sacre, "Sacred Voices," is a composition, which aurally represents the composer's personal expression of what he holds dear and precious in sacred music. The piece presents short melodic statements that are fleeting and meditative. Essentially the imagery should be that of the voices one can hear, feel, or imagine in a state of prayer.

Luigi Zaninelli is a graduate and formal faculty member at The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Following his position at Curtis, Zaninelli moved his family to Rome, Italy where he was a professional jazz musician. Zaninelli returned to the United States where he was the composer, arranger, editor, and conductor for Shawnee Press. Since 1973, Luigi Zaninelli has served as Composer-in-Residence and Professor of Music at the University of Southern Mississippi. He currently has over 300 published works to his credit. (Steven Riley)

Con-Tse-To (2013) Gregory Fritze

Con-Tse-To - a Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Concert Band was composed in 2013 at the request of Kenneth Tse. It is in three movements - 1. Pasodoble Melanie, 2. Lamento and 3. Danza Jubiloso. It is scored for piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, bassoon, optional 2nd bassoon, Eb clarinet ( optional), 3 Bb clarinets, Bb bass clarinet, 2 alto saxophones, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, 4 Bb trumpets, 4 horns in F, 2 trombones, bass trombone, euphonium, 2 tubas, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, suspended cymbals, crash cymbals, triangle, castanets, wood block, vibraphone, chimes, xylophone, glockenspiel, crotales, double bass ( optional) and solo alto saxophone.

Pasodoble Melanie, is in the traditional form of the march in Spain known as the pasodoble. It has a beginning theme in traditional march style using Spanish flavor harmonies and melodies. As the Spanish pasodoble is in the same form as American marches, the second theme is the "Trio" section. In the Spanish pasodoble, it is customary to have the first presentation of this second theme played extremely softly in the clarinets. It is also common during the repeat of the Trio to have a soloist such as a piccolo displaying an obligate of great virtuosic melodies in counterpoint to the clarinets. I felt this would be a very appropriate place for an alto saxophone obligato. In this pasodoble the third presentation of the Trio is shortened to allow for the first cadenza. Since I met Kenneth Tse for the first time in Bufiol (Valencia), Spain, I thought it would be very appropriate to use this traditional form for the first movement for his concerto. It is a Spanish custom for a composer to give a pasodoble composition as a gift such as to a musician or politician and the title of the piece often referen:ces the name of recipient's wife. Kenneth Tse's wife's name is Melanie so this movement is dedicated to her.

Lamento was adapted from a melody of mine "El afio del Trumpetista" originally composed in 2010. I thought the beautiful sound of Dr. Tse's saxophone playing would be very complimentary for this melody.

Danza Jubiloso is in allegro tempo with the first theme based on leaps of a fourth and an octave in duple meter. The second theme is mostly in 7 /8 meter. There is also a bit of a jazz element of harmonies and the added instruments of a drum set and jazz double bass in pizzicato.

A Step Ahead (1940) Harry L. Alford

Alford elevated the arranger's role to that of a creative artist; his ingenious and quirky orchestrations were a sensation. By 1910, his clientel!;!, particularly in the field of vaudeville, was enormous. He arranged and orchestrated the music of many of America's leading popular composers and songwriters, including Scott Joplin, W.C. Handy, Irving Berlin, Charles L. Johnson, and many others. In addition, bandmasters John Philip Sousa, Patrick Conway, Arthur Pryor, Albert Austin Harding, and Merle Evans were loyal customers for not only Alford's arrangements but his original band compositions as well. From 1904-1924, the Harry L. Alford Studio (which continued operations until 1940) produced over 34,000 separate arrangements.

Today, Alford is best remembered as a composer of excellent marches, his most enduring being The Purple Carnival and Glory of the Gridiron. (The Wind Repertory Project)

Kenneth Tse, alto saxophone

Widely recognized as one of the leading classical saxophonists in the world, Kenneth Tse is certainly one of the instrument's outstanding proponents on any saxophone aficionado's short list. He burst on the scene in 1996 as the winner of the prestigious New York Artists International Award, which resulted in an acclaimed debut recital at Carnegie Hall and being hailed "a young virtuoso" by the New York Times. The Alex Award from the National Alliance for Excellence led to another Carnegie Hall performance. And these are but two of the multitude of awards that Tse has garnered in less than a decade and a half. Since then he has been a frequent soloist in five continents. He is frequent featured artist at events such as the triennial World Saxophone Congress and North American Saxophone Alliance conferences and has been a guest clinician at conferences hosted by the California Band Directors' Association, Iowa Bandmaster's Association, and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinics. Prestigious universities and conservatories worldwide, such as Gnesin Academy of Music, Moscow State Conservatory, Sydney Conservatory and Paris Conservatory have invited him to give master classes.

Tse has been an active recording artist since his first CD for Crystal Records at age 23. There are now a total of six Crystal CDs-presenting a wide variety of saxophone repertoire, most of it new, some with assisting artists-as well as ten other releases and more in process on RIAX records, Jeanne records, . Bridge records, Enharmonic records, Arizona University Recordings and MSR Classics. Critical review of these disks have yielded such comments from Fanfare Magazine as "Hong Kong-born Kenneth Tse is of the caliber of instrumentalists whose very sound is captivating," and in American Record Guide, "supremely elegant tone ... sheer virtuosity." Saxophone Journal opined, "Kenneth Tse is a phenomenal saxophonist with incredible technical and interpretive skills. His tone is absolutely lovely. His fingers are precise and rapid. His interpretive skills are excellent having the ability to create vast aural fantasies in the listeners' musical soul. The true magic of music is to take a series of ink blots on a piece of paper and turn them into temporal living entities that almost live and breathe. And ... Kenneth Tse is the 'master magician'."

As an advocate for new music, Tse has had over thirty works dedicated to him and more in progress by many notable American composers as well as international composers in Colombia, Costa Rica, France, Russia, Spain, Canada, Australia, and Belgium. Tse has recorded and premiered many of these concertos, sonatas, solo works and chamber pieces. His own arrangements for the saxophone are published by Reed Music, Australia, and his articles and interviews have been featured in the Saxophone Journal, The Instrumentalist, Fanfare Magazine, Saxophone Symposium, Iowa Bandmaster Association Journal,Japan's Piper and The Sax Magazines, and Yamaha Education Series. Desiring to give back to his home city, Hong Kong, Tse has also founded in 2009 the biennial Hong Kong International Saxophone Symposium, which connects saxophonists from Asia and Oceania with world-class saxophone performers and teachers in a week-long event.

Tse's students have garnered high recognitions through competitions and recordings as well as concert appearances. Highlights include: winner of 2012 Music Teacher National Association National Solo 1

Competition, winners of 2010 and 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance National Solo Competition (two consecutive wins by a single studio, a first in NASA's history), semi-finalist of 5th International Adolphe Sax Competition (12 out of over 160), Silver Medalist in the 2010 Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition, winner of 2010 MTNA National Chamber Music Competition, and winner of 2009 Eastern Connecticut Symphony Instrumental Competition among others. Tse is currently Professor of Saxophone at the University of Iowa, President-Elect of the North American Saxophone Alliance, and serving his second term as Vice-President of the International Saxophone Committee.
