20/20 Vision. If only we all could have it . . .

As I prepared to leave the house for our 25th Annual Walk for Hospice this morning at about 10:10, it occurred to me that the 10th day of the 10th month of the 10th year of a new millenium would not occur again during our lifetimes, which caused me to ponder the question: What will our world look like 10 years from today?

Though 10-year strategic plans have fallen out of vogue due to their inability to foresee what may be just around the corner in this high-tech, high-speed world, this is not to say that we cannot have a 10-year vision for the future. Visions inspire goals, which serve to provide purpose and meaning for our lives. While we may not be able to predict what the world will look like in 2020, we certainly can have a vision of what our little corner of the world can look like if we set our minds to achieving it.

Living and dying are the only commonalities shared by all of us in this world. In that context, most everyone would agree that living a meaningful life, dying a peaceful death and leaving a legacy for our families are all goals worthy of intentional thought and purposeful action. It is at that crossroads – where one path leads to our physical death and the other continues on through the lives of those we’ve touched – where we can begin to dream.

Imagine for a moment a world in which everyone’s life had meaning, everyone’s death was peaceful and those whom we leave behind are afforded those same opportunities. Though we may not be able to realize this vision for all, it does not mean that we cannot aspire toward that end.

As the supporting foundation for Center for Hospice Care, and as the international partner for the Palliative Care Association of Uganda, we can most certainly have a vision for the manner in which we care for those whom we exist to serve.

During the upcoming weeks, we will finalize our vision statement and will be prepared to articulate it to our friends and supporters before year’s end.

Welcome to the inaugural issue of CROSSROADS. Through this new publication of the Hospice Foundation, it is our intent to keep you apprised of our work toward improving the quality of living and progress toward realizing our 2020 vision. We hope you will join us on this journey toward the future.

stories and activities from the past quarter

Sun, fun and great food filled the day as hundreds of cyclists, volunteers and staff gathered for the second annual Bike Michiana for Hospice event. Sponsored by Cancer Care Partners, a joint venture between the South Bend Clinic and Goshen Center for Cancer Care, the September 12 event once again was deemed a “huge success” by volunteers and cyclists alike.

The event commenced and finished at scenic St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend. Riders had a choice of five routes, including a Family Ride, 25, 40, 62 and the new 101.5-mile route in honor of media sponsor Sunny 101.5 radio.

Support and Gear (SAG) stops helped make each route more enjoyable with plenty of friendly assistance, music and outstanding food choices. With the expertise of great local restaurants, including LaSalle Grill, Yesterday’s, Indulgence Café and Fiddler’s Hearth, the 2010 event delivered on its promise to have the “Best SAG Stops Ever!”

The fun did not end when the ride was over. A post-ride party at the park provided a perfect opportunity to unwind, refresh and gather with friends. The post-ride

party featured home-made pulled pork sandwiches and Nelson’s famous herb roasted Port-A-Pit potatoes with live music performed by Banana Jones.

Participants did more than enjoy a fun day of cycling. They helped two great area not-for-profit organizations further their causes in our community. Proceeds from registration fees for the event benefited the

Hospice Foundation and the Bike Michiana Coalition. In addition, many participants made donations and raised funds directly for the Hospice Foundation. These funds will help the foundation continue to provide funding for care, compassion and support for people coping with progressive, life-limiting illnesses, regardless of their ability to pay for those services.

Running for a CauseMore than 25,000 runners turned out for the second annual Rock ‘n Roll Chicago Half Marathon on August 1. Fewer than 19,000 runners finished in the allotted time. Among the finishers? Our very own Hospice Foundation Run to Remember Team!

Thanks to the encouragement and generosity of many friends and family members, our 2010 team raised a total of $2,908 to support the work of our local Hospice Foundation and the National Hospice Foundation (NHF).

Why run for hospice? Meg Herman, NHF’s Run to Remember Spotlight Race Director, said it best: “There are great parallels between hospice care and a long distance run. A great race requires planning, discipline and preparation to get there. And often the experience itself is all you can do physically, emotionally and spiritually. So it is with hospice care.”

Half of the dollars raised by the team will go toward NHF initiatives on the national level and the other half will be used to fund current initiatives of our local Hospice Foundation.

Runners WantedAnyone can Run to Remember for NHF and our local hospice foundation. NHF’s Run to Remember athletic fundraising program recruits runners and walkers to complete marathons, half marathons, 10K, or 5K distances and raise money for hospice care while they prepare. Run to Remember provides full training support, as well as sophisticated online fundraising tools. All participants run or walk in memory of a loved one whose name is printed on the back of free race shirts sent to them. Each day, employees of Center for Hospice Care (CHC) show their dedication to improve the quality of living for our patients and their families. From caring for patients to answering questions posed by family memebers, CHC employees demonstrate their dedication to delivering the type of care and service that adheres to our core values: Compassion, Dignity, Integrity, Innovation, Quality, Service and Stewardship.

To further demonstrate their commitment to our patients and their families, the WE BELIEVE FUND was created. This internal employee-giving fund supports patients in financially difficult circumstances. Gifts from this fund help patients with needs that go beyond the scope of regular CHC funds and after all other sources of funding have been exhausted.

A steering committee of staff members from various CHC disciplines created the fund in May 2007, following months of planning. Employees manage and maintain the fund. A rotating employee committee oversees the operation of the fund and makes decisions regarding the approval and disbursements of gifts. Weekly announcements and quarterly staff meetings keep the staff informed of the fund’s activities.

Employees contribute to the fund with direct donations or by payroll deduction. The number of employees who have elected

to contribute by payroll deduction has risen consistently each year since its inception.

Along with the creation of the WE BELIEVE FUND, the employees have coined a motto that encompasses their feeling of compassion:

“We believe that we CAN make a difference!”

Goods and services gifted from this fund include:

• Pre-paid cell phones and minutes for patients with no phone service to use to contact CHC staff,

• Lifeline services, room monitors and hearing impaired telephones to address patient safety issues,

• Assistance with utility bills to help patients maintain electric, gas and telephone services during critical times,

• Window air conditioners, fans and space heaters to provide comfort to homebound patients,

• Lift chairs, wheelchair ramps, hand-held showers and special shower benches to assist with mobility issues,

• Travel tickets, gas and transportation to connect patients to families and needed services,

• Supplies and repairs to patient living quarters to keep patients safe and healthy.

Gifts from the fund have been used to keep patients safe and comfortable, as well as to assist with emotional support and encourage positive daily living:

• DVD players, CD players and cable television for bedbound patients;

• Yarn and fabric for patients with sewing and knitting hobbies;

• Large-print Bibles and large-print Guidepost subscriptions;

• Toys and art supplies for younger patients;

• Blues harmonica, CB radio and jazz CDs to revive passions from younger days;

• Cake for a patient’s “Celebration of Life” party.

Patients have been extremely grateful, and employees have been overwhelmingly moved by this fund and its benefits. The Hospice Foundation is proud of CHC staff members and their commitment to this fund. We believe we have made a difference!

Camp EvergreenThe 17th Annual Camp Evergreen proved a big success again this year. The weekend children’s grief camp drew a total of 49 participants. During the camp weekend, 120 people helped, including the talented and dedicated staff of the bereavement department.

Holly Farmer, Director of Camp Evergreen, said she wanted to send a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped to make this year’s Camp Evergreen such a success. The weekend experience would not happen without the support of staff and volunteers. Among those who helped before and during the camp weekend were Laura Lord, Diane Burkhardt, Ron Koelndorfer, Daniel Kassner, Amy Judd, as well as staff members who referred volunteers and campers.

Future Events and Hospice happenings

Foundation Producing DocumentaryAs part of its attempt to raise awareness of the need for funding to support its efforts in Uganda, the Hospice Foundation made the decision late last year to produce a documentary about the current state of palliative care (PC) in Uganda.

“Though the statistics are staggering, numbers alone don’t bring about change,” says Mike Wargo, the film’s producer. “Seeing the harsh realities of access to palliative care in Uganda will move hearts and cause people to act. In this way, the primary purpose of the documentary is to inform and inspire action.”

The finished work intends to show what dying patients and their families lives are like when they are the recipients of palliative care as well as the manner in which they exist when PC and pain relief are inaccessible. PC is available in less than half the country today and with the lack of available options for patients to pursue curative treatment, one of the biggest opportunities is to pursue funding to provide PC training for both modern healthcare professionals and traditional healers in order that they may be able to relieve the suffering of patients with life-limiting illnesses.

Wargo lead a film crew to Uganda in mid-June to begin filming. Upon their return the following month, they had amassed more than 17 hours of strong video evidence. Wargo is working closely with the film’s editor, Ted Mandell, who has taught the craft to aspiring filmmakers at the University of Notre Dame Film School for more than 20 years.

“Culling through the footage to identify those snippets that, when appropriately

intertwined, serve to tell the story is a daunting task to say the least,” Wargo says. Adding, “I am really happy to have Ted working on this project with us. He’s a very experienced film editor, and he clearly understands the story we want to tell.”

Editing and post-production activities are in process and will continue through the upcoming months. The film will be released in 2011.

The Wiekamp Family: A Lifetime of Giving

Dar, who passed away in 2008 at the

age of 94, and Dot Wiekamp began

their lifelong partnership as Mishawaka

High School students during the Great

Depression, marrying in 1936. Together

they created a family, built a business

and left a legacy. Their daughter, Mary

Lou, came along in 1940. Following in

her parent’s footsteps, she graduated from

Mishawaka High School. After graduating

from Northwestern University, she returned

to her hometown to teach elementary school

and soon married Denny Schwartz. From very

modest beginnings, the family created Valley

American Bank, which would become one

of the region’s leading independently owned

financial institutions.

From philanthropic support to countless

charities and educational institutions to

leadership on the boards of so many of

our community’s most important non-profit

organizations, the family’s reputation and

commitment to service is nothing short

of legendary. Their many philanthropic

contributions provided funding for

construction of the Center for the Homeless,

an auditorium at the Northern Indiana Center

for History, Wiekamp Hall at IU South Bend,

the Bethel College Athletic Center, the

Dorothy Wiekamp Demonstration Kitchen at

Ivy Tech Community College, the Schwartz

Wiekamp Medical Center in Mishawaka

and the Schwartz Tennis Center at Purdue

University. But this family’s philanthropy

has never been limited to strictly financial

gifts. They are known for their hands-on

involvement, and their approach is personal

and practical, a testament to their lifelong

commitment to the local community.

Dar served on the boards of the Salvation

Army, Century Center Foundation, Ancilla

Foundation, St. Mary’s College, Scholarship

Foundation of St. Joseph County, Center

for the Homeless, The Greater Elkhart Area

Chamber of Commerce, Snite Museum

of Art and the Executive Committee of

Project Future. He was a founding board

member of the Community Foundation

of St. Joseph County and was one of the

original members of both the IU South Bend

Advisory Board and Marian High School

Board of Directors. He served as president

of the South Bend-Mishawaka Area

Chamber of Commerce and the St. Joseph

Hospital-Mishawaka Foundation

and was the first volunteer chairman of the

WNIT Auction.

During her parenting years, Dot was active

in the PTA and Campfire. A lifelong member

of the First United Methodist Church of

Mishawaka, she served as an officer of

the United Methodist Women, chaired

the Memorial Gifts Committee and taught

Sunday School. Her many years of service

on the Board of Trustees of the Northern

Indiana Historical Society earned her the

status of Honorary Trustee.

She is a past president

of the Mishawaka Visiting

Nurse Association, a member

of Tri Kappa service sorority,

a life member of the South

Bend Symphony Orchestra

Association and a founding

member of the Mishawaka

YMCA Board of Directors.

Mary Lou, who passed away in 2002, is

most remembered for her lust for life. A

woman of great energy, she was involved in

designing and personally decorating all of

the bank’s various locations. She enjoyed

traveling and had many great friends with

whom she loved to laugh. Most of all,

she loved spending time with her family,

including her son, Jim, daughter-in-law,

Julie, and her grandchildren, Jim, Jr. and

Jennifer Jo, by whom she was affectionately

known as Mema. In addition to a lifetime

of service to her family and many friends,

she was a dedicated member of the Junior

League for 27 years and made time to serve

on the boards of many important non-profit

organizations, including the Northern Indiana

Center for History and Family & Children’s

Center Foundation.

This is one family that has truly led by

example by devoting themselves to a lifetime

of giving. They have had the satisfaction of

seeing their labors bear fruit, have shared

their good fortune through many gifts to

those in need and have unselfishly shared

the ultimate gift: the gift of themselves.

A crowd of 431 gathered at the Gillespie Center at the Hilton Garden Inn on May 5 for the 26th Annual Helping Hands Dinner to honor the Wiekamp Family with the 2010 Helping Hands Award.

The evening was opened by event dinner committee chairs, Phil and Mary Newbold, who began their remarks with praise for the

many contributions the family has made to improving the quality of living for those in our community: “There are hundreds in the room and countless thousands throughout our community who have been touched and blessed by the generosity and thoughtfulness of this remarkable family. They have built a lasting legacy of leadership, stewardship and

kindness that can best be described as a “Lifetime of Giving”.

Phil added that “strong, vibrant communities are built by having events like the Helping Hands Award Dinner, where we can all come together in fellowship and celebration to honor role models and leaders like Dot and Dar Wiekamp and their daughter Mary Lou Schwartz.

Mark Murray, president/CEO of the Hospice Foundation and Center for Hospice Care, spoke briefly and pointed out that “proceeds from tonight’s dinner go directly to our Hospice Foundation and permit us to continue to provide nursing, psycho-social, spiritual, emotional, and bereavement support to people with serious life-limiting illnesses and their families regardless of diagnosis, whether or not they have health insurance, or an ability to pay for their care.”

Rev. Larry Whitehead, First United Methodist Church - Mishawaka gave the invocation prior to a wonderful dinner served in the Flour de Lis Ballroom.

The evening was capped off by an emotional tribute video entitled “A Lifetime of Giving”, which was produced and directed by Dick Nemeth of South Bend-based PentaVision. The Helping Hands Award was then formally

presented by Catherine Hiler, board chairman of the Hospice Foundation, and Drew Wilson, board chairman of the Center for Hospice Care. Accepting the award on behalf of the family was Dot Wiekamp, who gave a very gracious acceptance speech, thanking all those in attendance and acknowledging the important work of the Hospice Foundation.

Thanks to the hard work of Mary and Phil Newbold and the members of a very dedicated dinner committee, the event raised more than $133,400 for the Hospice Foundation. Since its inception in 1985, the Helping Hands Dinner has raised more than $2.4 million for charity care.

Attendees were entertained during the cocktail party and dinner by the ever-popular local jazz trio Knapp, Probst & Wolfe.

Beautiful floral arrangements, accented with pink carnations, Dot’s favorite flower, were provided by Poppies, Inc. And for the 19th year, Lou Behre provided his time and extraordinary talent as the evening’s Event Coordinator. A truly great time was had by all!

The 2011 Helping Hands Dinner is scheduled for Wednesday, May 4, 2011.

Dick and Rita Strefling first encountered Center for Hospice Care (CHC) in 2004 when Dick’s mother, Esther, had a recurrence of cancer. With treatment no longer an option, Esther’s physician advised her family to contact CHC. Always an independent woman, Esther did not want to burden or depend upon her family. Unfamiliar with hospice services, the Streflings were thrilled to learn that CHC could offer Dick’s mother services in the comfort of her own home. Volunteers and professional staff – folks the Streflings refer to as “earth’s angels” – came to Esther’s residence several times a week.

They helped her bathe, take medications, and coordinated care with Eshter’s physicians. Dick remembers that his mother often looked forward to those visits from CHC staff and volunteers: “The care, compassion and help they gave not only to mom, but to the entire family, cannot be put into words.” Shortly before her death, Esther moved to Hospice House in South Bend. Again, the Streflings were amazed at how the “angels” offered comfort both to their mother and to the entire family.

Within a year of Esther’s passing, Dick and Rita reflected on their experience. As residents and business owners in Elkhart

for over 30 years, the Streflings knew they wanted to give back to their community. To do so, they created The Strefling Foundation, and their first major project was to contact CHC to inquire about the creation of a similar facility in Elkhart. Dick explains their motivation for bringing a hospice house to Elkhart: “when [you] are faced with the most vulnerable, open and soul-revealing moments of your life, it is good to know that you have professionals at the Center for Hospice to guide you through [those times].”

Dick and Rita wanted to share that comfort and guidance with their own community in Elkhart. As a member of the original task force for the creation of a hospice house in Elkhart, Rita was especially excited when they were able to locate a site and donate land for a state-of-the-art facility that would ultimately care for its first patient in November 2008. Rita has since become a member of the CHC Board of Directors and continues to work diligently in support of initiatives designed to make hospice care available to the entire community.

No matter what your financial situation, The Streflings point out that we all find ourselves in this situation personally and with our family members. The couple both

stressed, “Education is CHC’s biggest challenge and responsibility. It is important that people know that they do have a choice with whom and how they spend this important time. It’s not just a place to go for people who are near death’s door. CHC staff and volunteers go into private residences, nursing homes, assisted living facilities…they provide support once a loved one has passed….they go wherever their services are needed.”

The Center for Hospice Care received $300 from Culver’s Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc. (Epsilon Nu Chapter).

Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc. (Beta Gamma Chapter) donated $200 to sponsor two campers at Camp Evergreen, our annual children’s grief camp.

Delta Theta Tau of Plymouth (Zeta Zeta Chapter) donated $100 in support of our mission.

IMECO Federal Credit Union raised and donated $106 from its Annual Dinner.

Clay Township Lions Club donated $350 to help us continue to provide valuable services to our community.

Bendix Aviation Post 284 Ladies Auxiliary donated $1,615 from the proceeds of its University of Notre Dame season 50/50 drawings.

Bremen Conservation Club held its annual Winter Fishing Derby and donated $500 of its proceeds to the Hospice Foundation.

Family Bible Church of Granger donated $100 to help those in need.

Customers of Lafayette Community Bank’s Community Rewards Program donated $72.09.

The staff of Trinity Health paid to wear jeans to work for a “Jeans Dollars” event that raised $30.

McCormick & Company, Inc. and employees Brad Fulmer, Stephan Harbour, Linda Kleine, Joshua Niedbalski, June Smith and Mike Wasowski donated $1,248.

World Library Publications and Steven Warner donated $73.53 to Hospice from royalties associated with the recording “The Seven Signs.”

The Hospice Dinner/Dance Benefit The Hospice Dinner/Dance Benefit organized by the Coddens family and

friends was held on April 10, 2010, at the Mishawaka FOP. Ken Coddens,

owner of the former Ken’s Hair Studio in Mishawaka, organized the first

benefit for Center for Hospice Care in 2000. Ken lost his battle with

cancer in 2009. His daughter, Teresa, sought to revive the event this year

in memory of Ken. With help from family and friends, the event raised

$8,383.15. Ken’s goal was to hold the benefit for 10 years. This year was

the eighth event hosted by the family. Daughter Teresa intends to fulfill

her father’s wishes and see that goal accomplished.

Memorial Day Mud Bog The South Bend Sodbusters donated $6,500 from proceeds raised at the group’s Memorial Day Mud Bog. The group has been donating part of its proceeds from this event to the Hospice Foudation for the past six years.

Marine Corps Golf Outing The Marine Corps League Golf Outing was held on July 25, 2010, with proceeds benefiting Center for Hospice Care. Members of Detachment 095 in South Bend organized this inaugural event and raised $1,250 for CHC. The men were pleased with the turnout and plan to make it an annual event.

• Center for Hospice Care provides comprehensive physical, emotional and spiritual support for all persons facing life-limiting illnesses regardless of their ability to pay.

• In 2009, CHC cared for 1,752 patients. That’s more patients than any other hospice program in the State of Indiana. Full hospice services were provided to 62 of those patients free of charge.

• In 2009, donors provided nearly $1.1 million in financial support.

• In 2009, CHC provided bereavement counseling and services to 2,104 clients free of charge. Approximately 30% of those receiving services had no prior connection to CHC.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?Through our dedicated staff and volunteers, we’re able to

offer pain management, nursing, spiritual support and grief

counseling, helping thousands of patients and their families

in Northern Indiana. And though we have patients who

receive financial help from private insurance, Medicare

or Medicaid, we still have many more with no financial

recourse at all.

Despite this, we will not turn anyone away. That’s why

your financial support is vital to our ability to be there to

help those coping with their final days.
