You won’t find many people who love Minneapolis more, but even I have to admit our weather is, shall we say, extreme. Sometimes on one of those blistering cold winter nights, or a sweltering summer day, I ask myself: What was it like to live here before heating and air conditioning and everything else that protects us from the elements?

Part of the answer is: They didn’t do it alone. Native people thrived for thousands of years in communities built around the common good. Early settlers lived in villages where you didn’t build the barn alone but joined with neighbors in a barn raising. Partly because people here always needed each other, and partly because of the culture that grew up around those people, this place we now know as Minneapolis has always been a giving community. So it is no surprise that Minneapolis was one of the first cities in the country to develop a community foundation, and that we continue to grow it today. Annual gifts to funds of The Minneapolis Foundation have more than doubled in just four years, from $36.2 million in 2013 to $77.7 million last year. Even more important, as money into the Foundation has increased, our donors have also given more to the community, contributing nearly $60 million to worthy causes in fiscal year 2016-2017.

The Foundation will continue to grow by giving our donors and partners even more ways to be part of that giving community. We will offer more opportunities to learn and align around the areas where we focus our discretionary giving—education, economic vitality, and civic engagement—and areas where our donors concentrate, including the environment, health and wellness, and the arts. We will also expand our focus on our Family Philanthropy Resource Center, which helps generations do good together, and giving programs like Fourth Generation and the 612 Youth Engagement Project, which are growing Minneapolis’ next wave of philanthropists. Our city has great needs, but we continue to have an abundance of compassion. Our task is to align that compassion around actions that improve lives, and to proudly serve our community of givers at the heart of the giving community of Minneapolis.

THE MINNEAPOLIS FOUNDATION IS A COMMUNITY FOUNDATION THAT CONNECTS PEOPLE, IDEAS, AND RESOURCES TO IMPROVE LIVES. For more than 100 years, we have helped generous individuals, families, and businesses turn their passion into action, locally and globally. And through our unrestricted grantmaking, we invest in programs and strategies to build OneMinneapolis—a community where social, racial, and economic equity thrives.

Minneapolis Foundation donors give back to the community in many ways. Above, donor Allan Burdick reads with a student.

Minnesota kids deserve an excellent education. Ask just about any school board member, teacher, or parent, and that’s one thing they’ll all agree on. Yet building and sustaining a school system that delivers on that promise to all students is one of our community’s toughest challenges.

The Minneapolis Foundation invests heavily in education, but we also know that solving complicated problems like the ones facing our schools will take more than money – it will require a commitment from people all over our community to collaborate and share ideas.

That’s why the Foundation sponsored the Education Idea Exchange this spring, convening 50 Minneapolis education leaders for a fact-finding trip to Chicago. The trip supported a priority of Minneapolis’ superintendent: finding new ways for local classrooms to support social-emotional learning. It turns out that helping students develop the attitude and skills to show empathy, make responsible decisions, and manage their feelings isn’t just key to character development; it also promotes academic achievement.

Delegates on the trip included school board members, school administrators, parents, Minneapolis Foundation donors, education advocates in the nonprofit community, and leaders from the local teachers’ union. The group heard from an array of experts, including three former Chicago superintendents and former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. They also visited 10

schools to observe teachers who use a variety of strategies to foster social-emotional learning, from deep-breathing lessons to a classroom Peace Center where students can go to de-stress.

For some delegates, witnessing social-emotional learning in action was the most powerful part of the trip. “Watching it faithfully applied by committed teachers was a thoroughly overwhelming experience,” said Don Samuels, a Minneapolis school board member. “I was so moved, I cried like a baby.”

The trip lasted only three days, but the group isn’t done: They’ve already reconvened to talk about how they can build on what they learned. “We hope this trip is just a starting point,” said Patrice Relerford, the Foundation’s Director of Impact Strategy for Education. “If we can get everybody who cares about our students pulling together toward shared goals, we can create a powerful social network for change.”

When Dave Horan and his wife, Michelle, plan their charitable giving, they look for opportunities to support causes that matter to them—but that’s not all. “We don’t just want to give money to organizations that we believe in,” Dave said. “We also want to provide incentives for them to operate efficiently and effectively.”

When the Horans heard about InvestMPLS, The Minneapolis Foundation’s new impact investing program, they saw it as a great way to apply solid business principles to their philanthropy. Since organizations supported through InvestMPLS receive loans rather than outright donations, “They have more skin in the game,” Dave said.

The Horans are among the 21 Foundation donors who have pooled assets from their Donor Advised Funds in InvestMPLS since it launched last year. Many wanted to invest in education and economic vitality right here in Minneapolis. Some also appreciate the chance to put their charitable dollars to work while keeping them available for future grantmaking.

InvestMPLS is a revolving loan pool that’s designed to produce both a financial return and a social benefit. Participants invest in the pool at

a fixed rate of return for five years. At maturity, principal is returned for future investment or grantmaking. As of August 2017, the program has made $5.6 million in loans.

Assets in the pool are invested with intermediary Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) and deployed as opportunities arise to effect positive change in line with our mission. Initial investments with CDFIs such as the Latino Economic Development Center and the Nonprofits Assistance Fund support two of our key strategies: to create living-wage jobs and high-quality seats at schools educating low-income students of color.

“These loans are helping minority-owned businesses grow and great schools expand,” said Jo-Anne Stately, the Foundation’s Director of Impact Strategy for Economic Vitality, who estimated that the fund’s initial loans will help create up to 1,200 jobs and 800 school seats over the next three to five years. “By teaming up with our donors to invest in Minneapolis together, we can make a much bigger difference than any of us could alone.”

“The youth voice isn’t really heard a lot,” said Youth Congress member Delajuantae Moore. It should be, he added – not only because speaking up on issues that affect them helps students prepare for adulthood, but because they have a lot to offer. “Youth can really make a change when they feel there’s a need to put their minds to it.”

That’s the whole idea behind the 612 Youth Engagement Project (612-YEP), a grant program that supports summer camps and activities for underserved Minneapolis youth. Every year, dozens of organizations apply to 612-YEP for funding to run everything from tennis camps to wilderness adventures. Their proposals are reviewed and approved—or not—by high school students in the Minneapolis Youth Congress.

612-YEP started as a joint venture of The Minneapolis Foundation and the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board. Designed in response to the citywide Blueprint for Action to Prevent Youth Violence, 612-YEP engages young people to learn about philanthropy and build decision-making skills that will serve them when they become leaders in our community.

In the past six years, thanks to the support of many Donor Advised Funds at The Minneapolis Foundation, 612-YEP has made $1.1 million in grants. In 2016 alone, it funded programs that served more than 1,600 children and teenagers.

612-YEP participants attend a series of meetings every spring to review applications and award grants. Each proposal is considered by multiple readers, with each student examining the program’s budget, the population it serves, how it measures results, and more. Reviewing the applications was a fascinating opportunity, said Youth Congress member Ebony Owens, who enjoyed learning about programs tailored to young people with specific interests or needs, whether they’re passionate about science or came to Minnesota as refugees. Said Owens, “It opened my eyes to the challenges faced by other people.”

THE MINNEAPOLIS YOUTH CONGRESS HAS A MOTTO: “NO DECISION ABOUT US, WITHOUT US.”

A FAMILY FOUNDATION LOOKS TO THE FUTURE

Bob and Gail Buuck have been active in the community as far back as their children can remember. When their daughter, Katie, was young, Gail volunteered everywhere from their classrooms to downtown Minneapolis, where she worked with homeless people. Bob served on committees at the University of Minnesota and always made time for Katie’s Girl Scout troop. “It was always taught to us, and shown: You give back,” Katie said.

That value carries over to their philanthropy. When Katie was a teenager, her parents started a family foundation they have used to provide grants to help break the cycle of poverty and to support early childhood education for children and families at risk. From the start, Gail and Bob invited Katie and her brothers to get involved. Over the years, they’ve held family meetings about the foundation and allocated funds for their children to donate to causes of their choice.

As the kids grew up, the Buucks started thinking about the future. That’s why they turned to The Minneapolis Foundation’s Family Philanthropy Resource Center.

One issue on their minds was succession planning: Their foundation has never had a staff – it’s Bob and Gail who respond to all grant requests. The Buucks also wanted to expand their foundation’s work beyond the issues they were familiar with, and Katie and her husband were interested in creating their own giving traditions.

With help from their Philanthropic Advisor, Robyn Schein, they came up with a plan. To start, Katie and her husband opened a Donor Advised Fund of their own. “It was a way that he and I could give together, learn about foundation work, and pass that on to our children independently,” she said.

Gail and Bob also set up a second Donor Advised Fund that they and Katie have used to tackle an issue they didn’t have time to research: teen homelessness. Their Advisor researched their interests, recommended organizations, and helped them issue a request for proposals. Ultimately, they chose to support the Bridge for Youth, YouthLink, and Avenues for Homeless Youth.

In the process, Katie learned a lot about grantmaking at a community foundation – experience she is applying to her family’s foundation. “Looking forward, whether I stay a trustee or become more involved, I have the knowledge to do a good job carrying on the foundation’s legacy.”

“ IT WAS ALWAYS TAUGHT TO US, AND SHOWN: YOU GIVE BACK.”

SUPPORTING ORGANIZATIONSA tax-wise and potentially less restrictive alternative to a private foundation, a Supporting Organization enables donors to hire staff and convene a board. The Minneapolis Foundation handles all administrative and grantmaking oversight, including IRS-mandated tax returns and annual audits. Supporting Organizations are individual 501(c)(3) public charities under Section 509(a)(3) of the tax code and should have assets of at least $5 million. Although they have their own tax ID number and donations receive the maximum level of tax deductions, each Supporting Organization is covered by the umbrella of the community foundation, and its grants and activities must fulfill and support the charitable purposes of The Minneapolis Foundation.

DONOR ADVISED FUNDSThese funds enable donors to make a charitable gift, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants from the fund over time. They are established by individuals, families, foundations, or businesses that value administrative ease and cost efficiency, but still want to be actively involved in the grantmaking process. Contributions to these funds are tax-deductible, but there are no IRS regulations about when dollars need to be distributed. Donor Advised Funds are often the right answer for: people selling a business or facing a liquidity or tax issue; individuals who require due diligence before selecting charitable recipients; donors who want to involve other family members in decision-making; and folks who wish to make their gifts anonymously.

SIGNATURE FUNDSFor individuals, families, and businesses considering a charitable foundation of $1 million or more, Signature Funds combine the name recognition of a private foundation with the privacy, flexibility, and tax advantages of a Donor Advised Fund.

PLAY IT FORWARD FUNDSSpecially designed for professional athletes, these funds offer all the benefits of a Donor Advised Fund while also connecting donors with a community of other current and former professional athletes, corporate leaders, and philanthropists. Donors can network, discover charitable opportunities, and explore opportunities to collaborate with others to make a monumental impact in the community.

LEGACY FUNDSThese permanently endowed funds are created by living donors or through estate gifts. Donors may create their own funds or pool their resources with those of other generous donors to achieve even greater impact. Legacy Funds are invested for the long term, with annual distributions to organizations working within 12 specific areas of interest. These funds make it possible for donors to support causes close to their hearts well beyond their lifetimes.

FIELD OF INTEREST FUNDSThese funds are similar to Legacy Funds, except that donors choose one or more focal points for their giving. (These can be stated as broadly as “health” or as narrowly as “nutrition for mothers in greater Minneapolis.”) The grantmaking decisions for these endowed funds are made within defined guidelines over long periods of time by The Minneapolis Foundation, with grants supporting organizations engaged in the focus area established by the donor.

DESIGNATED BENEFICIARY FUNDSDesignated Beneficiary Funds are endowed funds established by donors to support one or more specific nonprofit organizations in perpetuity. These are commonly established through an estate plan as a way to continue providing annual financial support to the organizations a donor supported during his or her lifetime.

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDSOften created in honor or memory of a loved one, Scholarship Funds provide financial support to deserving students. Scholarships can be established to support graduates of, or those attending, a particular school. The initial minimum funding to endow a scholarship is $125,000.

FUND TYPESA community foundation reflects the diversity of donors’ interests and passions. Donors at The Minneapolis Foundation can select from a variety of fund types to turn their charitable dreams into reality. By administering these funds, the Foundation is proud to support the generous individuals who are responding to the community needs of today and tomorrow.

17

COMMUNITY ACTION FUNDSOver generations, donors have left gifts directly to The Minneapolis Foundation to use in addressing community needs. These endowed gifts provide resources annually to help improve the quality of life for everyone in our community. They are invested in strategies like grantmaking, advocacy, convenings and collaborations, and public awareness campaigns. Grants are awarded to nonprofits through a competitive process.

Current focus areas of these funds are:»» Education: Putting all students on track for college and careers.

»» Civic Engagement: Enabling all communities to participate in our democracy and in public decision-making.

»» Economic Vitality: Building a competitive and inclusive workforce.

SPECIFIC PURPOSE FUNDSThese charitable funds are created by The Minneapolis Foundation to receive and distribute assets for a specific charitable purpose. Funds are typically created on behalf of groups or organizations that have not yet been designated as 501(c)(3) organizations, or for charitable projects that have a limited term. They usually receive contributions from a broad cross section of the community.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUSTSA Charitable Remainder Trust allows a donor to irrevocably transfer assets into a trust. The trust pays income to beneficiaries throughout their lifetimes. Then the remainder goes to a fund at the Foundation.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTSA Charitable Lead Trust, which a donor seeds with irrevocably transferred assets, provides for payment to a fund at the Foundation during a fixed term. Then the balance of the trust assets is distributed to one or more individual beneficiaries.

RETAINED LIFE ESTATESAs defined by federal tax law, these gifts permit the donation of a personal residence, vacation home, or farm, with the donor retaining the right to occupy it for a period of time. A life estate may be retained for one or more lives, or it may be retained for a term of years.

COMMUNITY BUILDER BEQUESTSCommunity Builders have made a lasting commitment to the community, the charities, and the causes they value. These philanthropists have trusted The Minneapolis Foundation to carefully manage and distribute their charitable funds for generations.
