WELCOMENote

Many teachers spend the summer re-engaging with their own education, modeling for our students what we mean by our commitment to lifelong learning. They have undertaken a variety of projects and activities, and by so doing they will enrich the academic and extracurricular experience of our students. Two teachers traveled to Cuba with a group of educators from across the United States; several teachers are enrolled in renowned graduate programs; and others have participated in Advanced Placement, humanities education, college counseling, admission, and technology workshops in order to stay current with best practices and pedagogy. Coaches have attended seminars to inform their own practice through exposure to the latest coaching methods and fitness programs, and all teachers are reading for both pleasure and purpose, designing their courses and honing their understanding of the iPad and Pennington’s course management system.

This summer I have found myself reflecting not just on the past year, but also on the past seven years. Mike and I arrived in New Jersey in the summer of 2006, and I don’t think we ever could have anticipated how involved we would be in a period of sustained growth at Pennington. I also never could have imagined how quickly seven years would fly by or how many new friends we would make, both here and around the world. The School has benefited from the renovation of Stainton Hall’s science classrooms and laboratories; the installation of an artificial turf athletic field; upgrades of dormitories and classrooms; the institution of a global studies program that has sent faculty and students out into the world and has connected Pennington with schools across the globe; the adoption of an Honor Code; the creation of service opportunities in Haiti, Latin America, and the United States; a dramatic increase in Advanced Placement examination score results; and students achieving an impressive college matriculation list. Students have

excelled in all forms of artistic pursuits, and our athletic teams have distinguished Pennington in countless state tournaments and championship matches. We have also seen measurable growth in the applicant pool, and demand for a Pennington education has never been stronger. Through all this growth, we have remained fully committed to educating a diverse population. Without a doubt, Pennington is poised for the next step.

None of the facility improvements and program growth, faculty professional development, and accessibility for those not able to afford a Pennington education could have happened without the generous and loyal support from our Board of Trustees, alumni, parents, and friends of the School. Our record of success has allowed us to embark with solid footing on a capital campaign that is the culmination of the master plan conceived by the Board of Trustees. The Kenneth K. T. Yen Humanities Building will be an open, light-filled, and inspiring space where teachers and students will come together and collaborate in an environment specifically designed for optimal learning. The classrooms of Old Main that have weathered the decades but are no longer able to provide the flexible and technology-infused learning environmentrequired of a twenty-first-century education will be converted to admini-strative and admission offices. Old Main’s past will be honored as it assumes its hard-earned and well-deserved place as the historic heart of the School.

from the HEAD OF SCHOOL

Summer always affords me the welcome opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year and to set goals for the coming academic year.

Summer is also a time of renewal for my colleagues, a change of pace from the hectic, fast-moving, and adolescent-filled days of the school year.

The stories and pictures in this magazine about the 2013 alumni reunion day and 175th celebration that brought record numbers of alumni and their families to campus serve as a record of the optimistic spirit that prevails at Pennington. Together we are blending our past with our present as we chart the future.

It is a privilege to help guide Pennington into its next 175 years, and it is with our deepest gratitude that we send you this magazine and annual report. Pennington has much of which to be proud, and you can be certain that our graduates will continue to embrace the enduring legacy of honor, virtue, and humility.

Building for theFUTUREThe Kenneth K. T. Yen Humanities Building

Imagine a sunny, light-filled, two-story space where the entire senior class can gather for a lecture or an assembly. Classrooms with floor-to-ceiling windows. A student-centered quad on the south end of our campus. An environment that brings learning out into the open, in classrooms and seminar rooms that support collaboration, creativity, and interaction.

the PLAn The Pennington School unveiled a campaign to build the Kenneth K. T. Yen Humanities Building on Friday, May 17, at a special celebration for the School’s lead donors, volunteers, trustees, and friends. After completing a long strategic planning process, the Board of Trustees has unanimously committed itself to this project as the School’s highest priority.

This new building will illuminate the study of humanities in a dramatic and innovative way. It will bring together the disciplines of English, History, Modern and Classical Languages, and Religious Studies in one integrated, collaborative learning environment. These new classrooms will be large, open, and airy spaces with flexible seating, and even some movable walls. The building will provide more than 25,000 square feet of new classroom, faculty, and meeting space, all flooded with natural light. A gorgeous, two-story atrium will offer an impressive, technology-rich gathering space with tiered seating for lectures or large gatherings. The offices of Global Studies, College Guidance, Community Service, and Diversity will also be found within the new building, as will those of the School’s renowned Center for Learning.

This building will transform Pennington’s ability to prepare our students for the challenges that await them in a global society. It will allow teachers and students to work together freely and to learn from each other. Well-designed, adaptable spaces will offer room for independent study as well as places in which students and teachers can work as a team. Access to other related departments will provide a richer learning experience, foster true collegiality, and allow us to take a multi-disciplinary approach to teaching, in an environment as open physically as it is intellectually.

Transforming Our CAMPUSIn addition to the new building, plans include major reconstruction to other parts of the School’s campus. Stainton Hall will be dedicated to the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and become a true STEM building, allowing the same kind of cross-collabo-ration between disciplines as the new hu-manities building. Stainton will continue to be the home of the Middle School, although new classrooms will be built and the Middle School will be relocated to the other side of the building to accom-modate a better flow of student traffic. In addition, Old Main will be restored as the historic center of the School and will house administrative offices for the Head of School, deans, and the offices of Admission and Communications. The building will also become handicapped-accessible as part of its renovation. Other improvements include the reshaping of campus access and driveways to create a more unified and cohesive external environment.

Launching a CAMPAIGN

“In the next few months, we will start construction of the first new academic building on Pennington’s campus in 30 years. This will be a landmark building right on Delaware Avenue, and it will symbolize powerfully our continuing commitment to academic excellence and to the future of this School. We need facilities which match our commitment to the highest quality of teaching and learning. Our students and teachers deserve nothing less.”

—Peter Tucci ’79 P’16 ’16

The campaign launched on May 17. Pennington 175: Engage. Enlighten. Transform. will raise $10 million towards the $16 million cost of the Kenneth K. T. Yen Humanities Building and all the related

developments. As this magazine goes to press, more than half of the target has already been secured, and the remainder will be raised over the next two years.

The campaign launch was the first event in a yearlong celebration of Pennington’s 175th anniversary. After announcing the campaign, Peter Tucci introduced a video produced for the occasion in which students talk about what Pennington means to them, and how their experi-ences at the School are preparing them for college and their careers. This can be viewed online at http://www.pennington.org/capital-campaign. Following the video, Trustee Dave Paragamian P’12 ’14 and Head of School Penny Townsend described the thinking behind the new building and its importance in giving our students and faculty an environment that will stimulate engagement between students and teachers and lead to more active, dynamic learning.

The co-chairs of the event, B. J. Booth P’15, Merrill Long P’12 ’17, and Anne Elise Matthews P’17, spoke movingly of their families’ experiences with Pennington, and why they chose to be involved with the launch. The evening finished with dancing, music, and convivial conversation.

A project on this scale requires the com-mitment of the School’s trustees, current and past parents, friends, and, of course, our alumni. Trustees provided generous

support by contributing almost $2 million dollars at the very beginning. This spring, one alumnus stepped forward to bestow the lead gift of the capital campaign—the single largest gift ever given by a former student.

Kenneth K. T. Yen ’84 attended The Pennington School as an international boarding student, graduating in 1984. While at Pennington, Ken was a member of the basketball team, on the staff of the Penntonian student newspaper, and president of the International Club. One of our most distinguished interna-tional graduates, he went on to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Commercial Science from St. John’s University. Ken is the chairman of the Taiwanese company Yulon Group, established in 1953 by his father, Mr. Ching-Ling Yen, as the Yulon Machinery Company, manufacturing cars, machinery, and related products. The Yulon Group played a key role in Taiwan’s industrial and commercial renaissance in the 1950s and ’60s. After Ken’s father died in 1981, his late mother, Mrs. Vivian Wu, was elected chair of the firm, which today is one of Asia’s largest companies. Ken now leads the company. In 2002, he received the Outstanding Entrepreneurs Award from the College of Engineering, National Taiwan University. In 2004, he dedicated a room in the Campus Center to his late parents through a generous donation.

“The new building will provide the kind of environment that’s ideal for teaching the Humanities: open, collabora-tive, multidisciplinary, inclusive.” —Penny Townsend

The Pennington School is different from most middle and secondary schools. Its legacy, values, and resources create unique opportunities for personal growth and achievement. Life at Pennington is meaningful and rich—and includes a full range of activities both inside and outside the classroom. Pennington is committed to serious academic endeavor but is not limited to it, and we encourage our students to pursue the interests that inspire them academically, creatively, and athletically.

None of this would be possible without your support. By participating in our capital campaign, you will empower The Pennington School to light a path for future generations of students. We will continue to provide a vigorous academic experience that is tailored to the abilities, goals, and learning styles of each individual student. Our new learning spaces will enable an approach to education that is equal to the challenge of preparing our children to succeed in an ever-changing global society. We invite you to join us in building the future for them, right now. Construction will begin in Spring 2014.

This year’s Alumni Day festivities were expanded to include the 175th anniversary of the School. A first-ever symposium brought together current students with many notable alumni, who spoke eloquently about their own lives, careers, and experiences—how The Pennington School helped to prepare them for college and beyond. Former New Jersey Governor Tom Kean gave an inspired keynote address to kick off the day’s events, and a special laser show capped off the evening after an all-School barbecue that included all current students and their families, our alumni, and the faculty and staff.

On Friday, May 17, a group of trustees, leadership donors, volunteers, and friends gathered together for the launch of a new campaign—Pennington 175: Engage. Enlighten. Transform.—to raise $10 million for the construction of a new Humanities building, bringing together the disciplines of History, English, Modern and Classical Languages, English as a Second Language, and Religious Studies. This will be the first new academic structure on Pennington’s campus in 30 years. It will be a landmark right on Delaware Avenue, and it will symbolize powerfully our continuing commitment to academic excellence, to our students, and to the future of this School.

Education is what we do. We need facilities that match our commitment and dedication to the highest quality of teaching and learning. Our students and teachers deserve nothing less. The Board of Trustees has unanimously committed itself to this project as our highest priority. Already we have raised

more than half—$5.3 million, including nearly $2 million from the Board of Trustees—of our $10 million goal. Over the next two years, we intend to raise the rest. In addition to the new building, extensive renovations in Old Main and Stainton Hall will create new spaces for science and math, enhanced facilities for our Middle School, and bring together administration for more opportunities to collaborate and work together. The total scope of the project is more than $16 million.

This new building will also symbolize and demonstrate our commitment to preparing our students for life in this global era. The building will bear the

name of Kenneth Yen, a member of the Class of 1984, who gave the lead gift for this project. Ken is the chairman of the Yulon Group in Taiwan. The naming of such a prominent part of our campus after one of our most distinguished international graduates will make visible our commitment to international understanding and interaction. Inside, students will work together, exploring the best that the world’s civilizations have to offer and gain a deep appreciation of our common humanity.

Thanks to you, today the School is strong; it’s filled with dedicated and gifted teachers, and with bright, curious, and promising students. We are poised to grow even stronger. None of this would be possible without the donors and volunteers whose devotion to Pennington we honor in the pages of this report. It’s important to note that donations to The Pennington Fund contribute five percent to the overall budget of the School, so your annual gift touches every aspect of our community, including academics, the arts, athletics, student activities, financial aid, maintaining our beautiful campus, faculty salaries, and our overall growth and success as an academic institution. Thank you for your continued support!

The Mavellia Family, left to right: Mitchell, Jerry, Giuliana, Sophia, and Dora.

With the leadership of chairs Dora and Jerry Mavellia P’15, the Parents Committee of the Pennington Fund connected with fellow parents throughout the year with excellent results. This year, gifts from parents totaled a record-breaking $537,225. Through phone calls, emails, and personal contacts, the Committee increased parent participation to 64%, a 6% increase over last year’s rate. This is the third consecutive year of increased parent participation and is 11% greater than just two years ago. Growing participation is a vote of confidence in the School and in our mission. Thank you to Jerry and Dora and the entire Parents Committee for this wonderful success.

1939Champion Goldy has participated in the World Masters Games, which includes the U.S., Canada, and Australia, since 1970 and has won over 300 gold medals. His goal is to run the 100m at the Penn Relays when he is 100—only three and a half years to go!

1947Robert Locke is a WWII U.S. Army vet-eran and served for many years overseas in Afghanistan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, and several other locations. After retiring, he worked as a consultant for purchasing project equipment until 1997, and he con-tinues to do landscaping work at home.

Jack Russell is still working at his home- based custom-framing business, enjoying golf, traveling, and living in south Florida.

1948James McKee and wife Mary Ann recently took a trip across the pond for their 53rd anniversary in April 2013, just as their ancestors did! They now have 13 grandchildren and one on the way. Jim and classmate Bill Storch ’48 attended Alumni Day in May. Jim writes, “Classmates, please try to come in the fall for Homecoming. AND a reminder that you can still donate to tending our Veterans Memorial. It is well used by our students.”

William Poore is still the broker for a com-mercial real estate company and is playing lots of golf. He and his wife, Joe Ann, have 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Nicholas Pratt was one of the WWII veterans who returned to school after the war. At 89 years old, he is still pretty active and has recently run a 5K. After 33 years of employment at Lockheed Georgia as a test engineer, Nicholas and his wife of 66 years,

Alice, are enjoying retirement. They have two children, three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. They live on six acres on a lake in beautiful north Georgia.

Thomas Todd is living the wonderful retired farmer life—his hobbies include mowing five acres of lawn in summer, cracking black walnuts in autumn, and making balsawood WWII airplanes in the winter. He and wife Elsie have been married for 62 years and have five children, 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

1950Michael Lehrman writes that he is still working and currently holds over two dozen patents for medical devices; more are in patent-pending status. “Exploitation of my intellectual property is lodged in three companies: Sleep Methods, Inc.; iLife Solutions, Inc.; and iLife Technologies, Inc. I am the chairman and CEO of each. I have had two careers: aviation and medical device development. I trained to f ly both rotary wing and fixed wing aircraft in the military and was involved in military and civil aviation for 35 years. I did f light test work in both types of aircraft and was involved in FAA f light testing of the supersonic Concorde. The most notable applications of my patents are those directed at the development of a friendly intervention for obstructive sleep apnea. The Sleep Methods technology replaces the burden of wearing a pressurized “CPAP” mask at night with a comfortable, intelligent collar.”

1956Richard Brooks started skiing when he was 60 and eight years ago qualified for his first NASTAR which is the largest amateur ski competition in the USA. He came in 13th in the nation in his age class. This was his eighth year competing, and he was awarded bronze, finishing third in the 75–79 age group. Richard and wife Claire moved to Houston from Austin, Texas, 11 months ago, where two of their children live. In his spare time, Richard does some volunteer work and recently started a new hobby of making kaleidoscopes out of stained glass and wood.

1960Jeffrey Blitz retired as Atlantic County prosecutor in 2007 and moved to South Florida. His hobbies include scuba diving and motorcycle riding.

Douglas Davies worked for Dr. H.G. Khorana, the Nobel Prize winner in medicine in 1969 for his part in deciphering genetic code. From 1965 to 1969 Douglas was at the Institute for Enzyme Research at the University of Wisconsin. He helped develop human insulin formulations for Eli Lilly & Co. near London, England, and Fegersheim, France.

Marcos Policar has lived in Seattle since 1960 and enjoys volunteering in wineries.

1973John Rufe was inspired to email the following story to us after attending Alumni Day on May 17. He is referring to the Alumni vs. Varsity Baseball game in May 2011.

“I have to tell you this. I’ve participated in the Alumni Baseball game against the Varsity Team over the last several years. Two years ago this spring is the last time I played, couldn’t make it last year. Anyway I figure someone needs to represent. I get there and of course I feel like grandpa. I was expecting maybe big brother or at worst dad, but no, grandpa. And they made me feel that way a little, too: Where did you dig up this old fossil kind of attitude. It was made worse when they were making up the lineup and it was decided it would go by year graduated. In other words old guys first. When that decision was made they all turned and looked at me and said, I guess that means you’re up first.

The Varsity team takes the field, the pitcher is warming up, I grab a bat in the on deck circle, watch the pitcher warming up (he’s a lefty) and smiled to myself and said at least I’ll get a little longer look at the pitch. I have to be the leadoff batter and am feeling a little like the joke. All I want to do is not embarrass myself. Well, the umpire says play ball. Yes, they actually hired two umpires for the game, one behind the plate and one in the field. I step into the batter’s box and can see the little smiles and giggles. The first pitch comes and is outside. He wasn’t pulling any punches. This guy was out to embarrass the alumni, and I was the first target. The second pitch comes and I swing like a rusty gate, late, off balance, just ugly. Now you can hear the little comments from the field and the Varsity bench. The next pitch this young stud throws, senior by the way, is right down Broadway and I jumped on it and made contact. I’m trying to run down to first, hoping a hamstring doesn’t go. I rounded first and looked at the field umpire and he has his arm in the air moving it in a circle. I look at him and said, you’re kidding right? He said no, it was well out. Now the Alumni bench is up clapping and laughing. The Varsity infield is laughing at the pitcher and making comments like “Dude, look what he did to you.” I felt vindicated, a leadoff home run and, even better, the Class of ’73 was represented. Jerry Eure laughed and just shook his head. It was dumb luck and I probably shouldn’t play again. Maybe Jim and I will play in the Alumni Softball Game.”

1975Robert Crystal has retired from the Inspector General’s office in Florida. One son is a detective in Baltimore; his other son is a technician with Apple. His daughter will graduate next year from Rutgers. He writes that “my wife is more beautiful than when we married. I often think of my Pennington classmates and our good times with great fondness.”

1978David Kim is engaged to Susan F. Zubriski and will be getting married at the Camden Aquarium in August. He would love to hear from his classmates and can be reached at [email protected] or on Facebook.

1979Peter Tucci has recently been selected for ranking by Chambers and Partners, Inc., as a leading attorney in the categories of (1) Mergers and Acquisitions, (2) Corporate, and (3) Private Equity. Chambers is the leading global directory and most exclusive listing of the world’s attorneys.

1982Patrick Hagerty is returning to school this fall for a master’s in information technol-ogy management with concentrations in management and security. He has reached five years working for Morgan, Lewis and Bockius on their IT team. He is still sing-ing with the Philadelphia Gay Men’s chorus, and this fall marks his 11th season. His pho-tography has also taken off; he’s been pub-lished in the City Paper, Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Bulletin, G-Philly, Philadelphia Gay News, Philadelphia Metro, Genre, and Edge Philadelphia as well as many others. His pho-tographs have also been used commercially.

Cathilyn Spampinato Pappano recently earned her M.S.Ed. with a focus in school counseling. She continues to work at Calvary Christian Academy as a guidance counselor and special education coordinator.
