SCHOLARSHIPS and AWARDS presented to the CLASS of 2021SCHOLARSHIP NIGHT June 3, 2021

The WOMEN LOOKING TO INSPIRE AND CHALLENGE AWARD is presented by former WHS Principal, Lyn Fields, to a female student who has invested in women’s issues, including women’s studies, human rights, climate and environmental studies, legal aid, and/or civil and criminal justice studies. The student has demonstrated an interest in public service and a desire to “pay it forward” following the completion of her studies. This student is an active member in the school community, making physical and artistic contributions to the school over her high school career. The recipient has maintained a GPA above 3.0 and wishes to further her education in college, with a goal of inspiring and challenging others. The recipient has demonstrated leadership, passion, thoughtfulness, and insight. Recipient: Audrey Kang

The AGNES BEIDEMAN MEMORIAL AWARD is presented to a member of the graduating class who has expressed an interest in writing as a journalist, author, playwright, poet, or essayist. Recipient: Claire Gruen

The COSMOPOLITAN CLUB PRIZE HONORING MRS. HELEN E. MOORE is an award presented to a member of the graduating class who has made outstanding contributions to the school’s activities program and has achieved a high scholastic average. Recipient: Sasha Jason

The FRED B. STRATTON FAMILY MEMORIAL AWARD is presented annually to a member of the track team who has displayed the qualities of loyalty, reliability, team spirit, and conscientiousness throughout their athletic career. Recipient: Nicole Palish

The FREDERICK T. & ELFRIEDA H. JAFFIN MEMORIAL AWARD is presented to a member of the graduating class who has achieved a high scholastic average, has participated in varsity athletics, and has shown leadership qualities. Recipient: Michael Fath

The MARJORIE E. SMITH MEMORIAL AWARD is presented to a student who has achieved the highest academic average in French, and who is continuing their education at an institution of higher learning. Recipient: Olivia Welsh

The JOHN ALLEN MERCALDO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a member of the graduating class who has achieved a good scholastic average, has excelled in music, and is continuing their education in music. Recipient: Avery Hirsch

The JAMES OZGA MEMORIAL AWARD is presented to a graduating Vo-Tech student who has participated in school activities, is involved in the community, and is furthering their education in college or vocational training. Recipient: Florino Leiva-Candido

The FLOYD E. GARIS TRACK and FIELD AWARD provides two scholarships to be given to a male and a female member of the graduating class who have participated in track and field and achieved good scholastic averages. The recipients have shown loyalty, team spirit, dedication, leadership, and a pursuit of education in college or vocational training. Recipients: Kasi Brown and Taraji Ellington

The SENIOR CLASS AWARD is presented to a member of the graduating class who has participated in activities, contributed to the Class of 2021, and maintained a good scholastic average. Recipient: Lindsey Schmidt

The CHRIS ANGERMANN MEMORIAL AWARD FOR DRAMA presents scholarships to two students who have demonstrated leadership, enthusiasm, dedication, and versatility in drama, whether on stage or behind the scenes. Recipients: Kelsey Miller and Frank Tucker

The FRANK G. GOELZ MEMORIAL AWARD is awarded to a graduating student of good character who has best demonstrated the qualities of artisanship and creativity. Recipient: Nolan Ryan

The estate of WILLIAM F. MCCANN provides two SCHOLASTIC AND ACTIVITY AWARDS to a male and female member of the graduating class who have achieved high scholastic averages and have participated in school activities. Recipients: Dagmar Daniel and Alexander Yum

The NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP grants two awards to members of the graduating class who have maintained high scholastic averages, participated in school activities, and are well regarded by the faculty and by their peers. These students are members of the National Honor Society. Recipients: Maya Rosenthal and Srikar Sunil

The BRUCE D. ARNOLD MEMORIAL AWARD provides two scholarships to be given to a male and female member of the graduating class who have participated in at least two sports and have demonstrated good sportsmanship, academic achievement, and school spirit. Recipients: Eunice Fu and Jackson Tappen

The WOMAN’S CLUB OF WHITPAIN SCHOLARSHIP provides a scholarship to a member of the graduating class who has been accepted to an institution of higher learning. The student has practiced good citizenship, has a good-to-excellent scholastic average, and is highly respected by faculty and peers. Recipient: Maria Gonzalez

The STUDENT COUNCIL LEADERSHIP MEMORIAL AWARD provides two scholarships which are presented as a memorial to those graduates who have given their lives for their country. The award is presented to two members of the graduating class who have achieved good scholastic averages, performed outstanding service to the school, and are highly regarded by faculty and peers. Recipients: Paige Benning and Brody Myers

The STUDENT SERVICE AWARD from the Ambler Rotary is awarded to a member of the graduating class who has performed outstanding service to the school and/or community, and who demonstrates the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.” Recipient: Rohan Mehta

The COLLEEN M. and WILLIAM A. ROMANO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a member of the graduating class who has been accepted to a four-year college and will be majoring in education. This student has achieved at least a “B” average, has been active in school activities, is highly motivated, contributed to the success and appreciated the accomplishments of others, and represented our high school in a positive manner. Recipient: Emma Clayborne

The SOCIAL LAB AWARD is presented to a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated personal commitment and contributed significantly to volunteer work. This student has benefited from the Social Lab experience. Recipient: Ethan Sarwer

The J. D. CALANDRA “CLASS OF ‘88” MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP provides two scholarships to be granted to a male and female member of the graduating class with good academic standing who will attend a four-year college. These students exhibit an outgoing personality, a cooperative attitude with both peers and staff, a sense of humor, high personal values and sensitivity to others, and involvement in individual, team, and/or community activities. The DONALD T. HOUPT SCHOLARSHIP FUND provides an award to a student in the top 5% of the graduating class who demonstrates good citizenship, awareness of others, and social consciousness. Recipient: Mari Kleha

The ELEANORE B. TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to two members of the graduating class who have earned the highest scholastic averages. Recipients: Hannah Wang and Jacky Zheng

The MUSICAL THEATER SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to two students who have excelled in the musical theater arts as singers, dancers, or actors and who have shown enthusiasm for and dedication to Wissahickon High School musical productions. Recipients: Jackson Gruenke and Natalie Kaplan

The WISSAHICKON BAND PARENTS’ SCHOLARSHIP provides an award to a student who has participated in the Marching Unit and its activities. The student has demonstrated leadership, enthusiasm, and a positive overall attitude and will pursue further education. Recipient: Donovan Leary

The ART DEPARTMENT OF WISSAHICKON HIGH SCHOOL is awarding a scholarship to a graduating senior who has demonstrated consistent and outstanding conceptual and artistic skill and who will further their education in the field of art. Recipient: Ella Carter

The PHILADELPHIA FOUNDATION SAMUEL and HELEN LAPP PEACEMAKING AWARD is presented to a graduating student who has spoken out for or has an outstanding scholarly publication on the promotion and advocacy of peaceful and non-violent policy at the local, regional, national, or international level. The BLUE BELL ROTARY THOMAS J. CASSIDY MEMORIAL AWARDS are presented to a male and female graduating senior who exemplify service and dependability and who will continue their education with college or technical training. Recipients: Ethan Glass and Charlotte Horvat

The GABRIELLE CAUVIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a student of good character and high moral standards, who has overcome hardship, who has been involved in school or community service, and who is furthering their education. Recipient: Bridget O’Donnell

The RAYMOND J. CAMPION, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to two seniors who are continuing their education in either college, vocational, technical, or trade school. These students are of good character, have a friendly attitude, have made great strides to reach their fullest potential while in high school, and have demonstrated concern for others. The TIMOTHY D. BETTERLY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP awards a scholarship to a member of the Boys’ Track and Field Team who leads by example and demonstrates hard work and competitiveness. Recipient: Shawn Carr

The WISSAHICKON EDUCATION ALLIANCE, composed of faculty and support staff, presents two scholarships to graduating seniors with high academic achievement who are majoring in the field of education. Recipients: Julianne Aniceto and Elias Kilshaw

The TERRY O. STOLLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a graduating senior who excels in music or the performing arts, and who will major in music and/or the performing arts in college. Recipient: Abigail Morehouse

The OFFICER RICHARD LAWN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a graduate who is continuing their education in Criminal Justice/Law Enforcement, who has participated in a team sport, and who has been a mentor to other students. Recipient: Caroline Hassall

The ROTARY CLUB OF AMBLER JOHN L. and HELEN B. SHOEMAKER AWARD presents two scholarships to graduating seniors who, during their high school careers, have demonstrated the ideals of Rotary, including community and international service, scholastic achievement, leadership, and character. The AMBLER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC is awarded to a resourceful and cooperative graduating student who has participated in high school string activities with a high level of performance skill, achieved honors, such as First Chair, played in ensemble or has had audition successes. The AMBLER AREA RUNNING CLUB SCHOLARSHIP is presented to two graduating cross-country or track athletes who have participated for at least two years and whose dedication, enthusiasm, and achievements have exemplified the best aspects of the sport of running. Recipients: Lindsey Frenia and Brett Lehman

The Wissahickon Wrestling Parents’ Association provides for the NELSON STRATTON MEMORIAL WRESTLING SCHOLARSHIP which is given to a wrestler who has displayed a strong work ethic, courage, leadership, and good citizenship throughout his high school career. Recipient: Daniel Mesen

The POST-PROM SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a member of student council who plans to attend a 4-year nursing, medical, or health-care institution. While in high school, the student must have had a high academic standing and participated in a community service club which promotes a drug/alcohol-free lifestyle. Recipient: Paige Zimmerman

The BOWER, HORTON, SHERMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is given to a graduating senior who has been accepted to an accredited two or four-year institution of higher learning or vocational school. This student is a resident of the Ambler/Penllyn area, has an outgoing personality, practices good citizenship, and has attained good academic standing. Recipient: Khaiyani Rowe

The CHERI PARSONS COMMEMORATIVE SCHOLARSHIP is being awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated consistent and outstanding conceptual and artistic skills, has demonstrated success in the Wissahickon District Art Show, and is furthering their education in the field of art. Recipient: Sara Alhaffar

The WISSAHICKON EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOUNDATION AWARD is awarded to a graduating senior who has excelled in community service throughout their high school career. Recipient: Quinn Gaffey

The EBONY DORSEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a female student possessing a vivacious disposition, who is dedicated to academics, and who has an interest in the performing arts. This student has shown perseverance through adversity, has positively impacted the community, and is planning to attend an institution of higher learning. Recipient: Gabrielle Grosser

The LYNNE PATTERSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a well-rounded, people-oriented student who loves literature and intends to major in English or journalism in college with the goal of becoming a teacher. This graduate should be a role model to others and well-liked by their peers. Recipient: Bayanne Kakhia

The ARTHUR R. DRIEDGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who best demonstrates both leadership and ability in the social sciences. This student exhibits a love of history and nature and possesses exuberance for life. Recipient: Olivia Welsh

The KNITTEL KINDNESS AWARD is presented to a student of high moral character who has gone beyond expectations by demonstrating sincere kindness and empathy without any secondary gain. Recipient: Elizabeth Kunzier

The KATIE O’DONNELL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a female athlete who has displayed positive and supportive teamwork, sportsmanship, team spirit, leadership, and dedication. This student serves as a positive role model for others and has achieved good academic standing. Recipient: Alena Doll

The FRANCES (BOO) CROFTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a student who has made notable contributions to the community, either the Wissahickon School District community or the community at-large and who has, through action and example, promoted positive relationships among groups in our diverse school population. This recipient is planning a career of service in social work or education. Recipient: Amber Farmer

The DIVERSIFIED RYDERS MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION AWARD presents a scholarship to an African-American student who has been accepted to an accredited two or four-year institution of higher learning or vocational school. This student is a resident of the Ambler/Penllyn area and has an outgoing personality, is a good citizen within the high school and community environment, and has achieved good academic standing. Recipient: Ginelle Mitchell

The WISSAHICKON HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE PRINCIPAL’S AWARD is presented to two graduating seniors who have shown impressive growth and who have made great strides to reach their fullest potential during their high school career. The WISSAHICKON MIDDLE SCHOOL HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION awards two scholarships to graduating seniors who are alumni of the Wissahickon Middle School. These students are of good character and academic standing who plan to attend an institution of higher learning. Recipients: Jordan McDonald and Adora Saro

The WISSAHICKON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1972 SCHOLARSHIP presents three scholarships to students who have demonstrated leadership qualities and character in their actions towards others, in school and/or in the community. These seniors have achieved good academic standing and possess an exceptional degree of pride and determination to make a positive impact. The recipients have been accepted to an accredited college or vocational school. Recipients: Layla Lopez, Shyanne Torres, and Essence Whitaker

The PAULA J. MCLAUGHLIN COMMEMORATIVE SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a passionate, civic-minded female student who not only answers the questions but questions the answer. This student is of high moral character, has a GPA of 3.0 or better, and plans to attend an institution of higher learning. Recipient: Amani Midgette-Muhammad

The TROJAN AQUATICS CLUB presents two awards to a male and female swimmer who support and encourage teammates and exhibit good sportsmanship, leadership, and citizenship throughout their high school career. These students have good academic achievement and are recognized by the coaching staff for their outstanding efforts. Recipients: Jillian Garvey and Sidharth Rajesh

The Wissahickon High School AMBASSADORS CLUB AWARD is presented to two students who are planning to attend a two or four-year college or vocational school. These students embody the mission of the Ambassadors Club: compassionate, welcoming, inclusive (crossing racial, socio-economic and religious boundaries), and service oriented. Recipients: Hannah Scalley and Manny Taveras

The Wissahickon High School HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION VO-TECH AWARD is presented to two well-rounded students who attended the North Montco Technical Career Center. Recipients: Owen Latchford and Gabriel Roberts

The Wissahickon School District K-12 HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT AWARD is presented to a student who is planning to attend a four-year college/university program associated with health and physical education, athletic training, exercise physiology, and/or sports business. This student participates in school sports/clubs and demonstrates responsibility, good sportsmanship, and is a positive role model. Recipient: Jack Schmidt

The BRIAN E. BOKOSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student planning to attend an institution of higher learning focusing on health-related fields. This student is well rounded, active in school, and volunteers in the community. This student is of high moral character and has overcome challenges with resilience and grace. Recipient: Nathan H. Kim

The SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF COLLEEN AND WILLIAM ROMANO is presented to a deserving graduating senior who intends to further their education in the field of special education. Recipient: Maggie Bianchini

The JAMES BURNS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a male basketball player with a GPA of 3.0 or higher who is planning to attend an institution of higher learning. This student strives to do his best throughout the season and is a positive role model. This student demonstrates good work ethic, commitment, and team spirit in school and the community. Recipient: William Kunzier

The ACE A 3/MIND THE GAP SCHOLARSHIP is presented to a college-bound student making a positive difference in eliminating educational inequities among under-represented groups. This difference can be made through advocacy or their own academic achievement. Recipient: Amani Midgette-Muhammad

The ALEXANDER “RON” ROTELLI, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP, sponsored by Woody’s Circle of Care Foundation, is presented to a student with high moral standards and good character. This student has endured and/or overcome hardship, exhibits good citizenship both in school and in the community, and has maintained a GPA of 2.5 or better. Recipient: Selma Nsioui

The COLONY CLUB OF AMBLER provides awards to two students with solid academic records who demonstrate excellent character, good citizenship, and outstanding promise for the future. Recipients: Skyler Durham and Dru Johnson

The JOSEPH J. SCODARI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student with plans to pursue higher education. This student has maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0 during their studies at Wissahickon High School. They are a “Friend that Friends Can Depend On” and are involved in a variety of clubs. Recipient: Jake Kelly

The WISSAHICKON HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY “HEART AND SOUL” AWARD provides a scholarship to a student who has dedicated their time bettering themself to help their team succeed. They are a leader on and off the field, in and out of season. This student is able to dedicate themself to their academics while maintaining a diligent work ethic on the field. Recipient: Kendal Williams

The ALEXANDER AND ELIZABETH GREGORIO – UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student who will attend the University of Virginia. This student has high academic standing and character in line with the UVA tenets whereby a student will not lie, cheat or steal. Recipient: Zachary Carey

The WISSAHICKON VALLEY HISTORICAL SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a student studying history and/or education. The student is involved in community organizations with an emphasis on local history and/or citizenship. Recipient: Liam Trumbore

The JEFF MADDEN WRESTLING SCHOLARSHIP is awarded to a senior wrestler who possesses the determination, dedication, work ethic, and leadership to be the best they can be not only on the wrestling mats, but inside and outside of the classroom as well.
