CELEBRATION OF MATHEMATICS WEEK: COMPREHENSIVE REPORT

“The power of mathematics is often to change one thing into

another, to change geometry into language.”

-Marcus du Sautoy

The birth anniversary of the great Indian Mathematician- ‘Srinivasa Ramanujan’ is celebratedevery year as National Mathematics day. To commemorate this day and in continuation withour endeavour to bring new and exciting breaks from the mundane curriculum, Bal BharatiPublic School organised a week long Mathematics day i.e. from 17th December to 21st

December 2018. Each and every section of the Primary wing was involved in diverse activitiesthat encompasses almost every sphere of life.

Mathematical skills are crucial for a wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, economics and soft skills application. Considering this perspective, various classes indulgedthemselves in assorted activities.

DISPLAY OF VIDEOS RELATED TO MATHEMATICS:

Interesting and thought provoking videos on basicand fundamental mathematical concepts related toSrinivasa Ramanujan’s discoveries, journey ofAryabhatta, construction of Ramanujan magicsquare and some invigorating interesting facts aboutmathematics were shown to the students on theSmartclass. It received a tremendous response fromthe students; they not only found the videosenjoyable but also prepared themselves wellthrough short quizzes taken up in the classroompost the videos.

DAY 1 (17th December, 2018)

CLASS I:DESIGN A PATTERNStudents involved themselves increating an imaginative pattern byutilizing only four basic shapes i.e.circle, triangle, rectangle and asquare. This helped them inunderstanding and identifying thepresence of these shapes in oursurroundings.

CLASS 2:SUDOKUAn age appropriate mathematicalpuzzle was given to students. Theone who solved it first was thewinner. This activity nurturedlearners analytical and problemsolving aptitude and thereby creatinghealthy competitive environment.

CLASS 3: TESSELLATIONAs different and unique as the name

itself, this activity includes creatingdesigns on a plane surface using oneor more geometric shapes, with nooverlaps and no gaps.. A periodictiling has a repeating pattern. Thesuccess of the activity was evidentwhen students competed with eachother to create patterns like noneother and in doing so created someincomparable canvases.

DAY 2 (18th December,2018)

CLASS 4: WALL HANGING USING SHAPES

This activity required students tocreate a decorative wall hanging usinggeometrical shapes. Our little creatorsused recycled materials to createattractive wall hangings. Thiscompetition filled the atmospherewith the spirit of mirth and therebyshowcasing animated classrooms fullof vibrant colours. It encouragedcraftsmanship and artfulness of thestudents.

CLASS 5: MATHEBOLA This activity is a combination ofmathematics and tambola. Studentsenjoyed playing this mathematicalgame. Slips with 15 numbers writtenon them were given to students. Classteacher spoke out equations insteadof numbers and the students had tocalculate the answers for the saidequations. Students enthusiasticallyparticipated and showed greatinterest in solving equations

DISPLAY BOARD BASED ON THE

‘MATHS WEEK’ THEME.

All the students from primary wing created‘Maths week’ inspired display boards thatproved to be inventive and unconventional. Itproved to be an invigorating activity whichinvolved the whole class and created awholesome connect within them. Studentsworked as a team supporting and brainstorming together.

CLASS I: PUPPET MAKINGThis activity required innovation wherestudents arranged various geometricalshapes and cut outs to create a puppet. This activity led to great enthusiasticcommotion in the classroom resulting indisplay of some eye catchy puppets.

CLASS 2: TANGRAM LANDSCAPEMaths and creativity go hand in hand.Students successfully created a Tangramlandscape which required students to makebeautiful landscapes using tangram pieces. This activity focused on the precision, detailing and pre-requisite knowledge ofshapes.

DAY 4 (20 December,2018)

CLASS 3: SECRET SUM GAMEIt’s also known as the logic puzzle. This activity required the arrangementof three wheels in such a way thatnumbers in each sector added to thesame number. This proved to be achallenging and a mind bogglingactivity as it required students tobrain storm, since there could be onlyone correct solution. Students wereinquisitive and wanted tocontinuously solve the puzzle untilthey succeeded.

CLASS 4: RANGOMETRYAs the name suggestsstudents were to fill ‘Rang’ inthe Rangoli made withgeometrical shapes. The goalwas to enhance theircreativity and arouse theiraesthetic sense to appreciatedifferent colors and shapes intheir surroundings.

CLASS 5: CLOCK-O-MANIAThis activity involved creating amathematically enriched face ofa wall clock . It involved creationof simple equations resulting inthe digits found on the clock.Students successfully created avariety of equations and brain-stormed to present the bestclock in the class.

DAY 5 (21 December, 2018)

CLASS I: ADDITION USING BALLS

It was a group outdoor activity, where a sand pit was filled withnumbered balls. The teachercalled out addition problemswith students running to the pitto pick up the correct answerball. This activity encouragedteam spirit and created a sparkof enjoyment amongst littleones.

DAY 4 (20 December, 2018)

CLASS 2: CREATING TABLES IN HOOPLA

Multiplication is an essential partof elementary education.considering this, a fun basedmultiplication tables activity wasconducted where children createdmultiplication tables in and aroundhoopla rings using various cut outs.It helped them to learn theimportance of team work alongwith speed and accuracy. Theactivity was executed successfullyand children enjoyed it thoroughly.

CLASS 3: SOLVE THE MAZEThis activity involves studentmoving numbers in three differentdirections to reach the center inminimum time possible. Activeparticipation with added logicalreasoning encouraged students toanalyse and brainstorm collectively.

CLASS 4: SKIT ON MATHSThe students enthusiastically enactedthe short skit on the theme‘BODMAS’. Each group came up withimpressive ideas and thoughtprovoking messages. It was anentertaining and enriching session. Itprovided an opportunity to thestudents to express and articulatetheir thoughts in a constructive way.

CLASS 5:MATHEMATICS RELAY

This game was divided into four parts. Here students ran against time andaccuracy. The winning team requirednot only to be fastest but should alsobe able to solve each challengecorrectly. This activity had multipleoutcomes including problem solving, team planning, applying analyticalskills and time management.

SUMMING UP:The results of various competitions held during the week wereannounced much to the excitement of the students. The curtainswere brought down on a week full of mind bogglingmathematical sessions and collective positive energies directedin a constructive way. Maths week proved to be a successfulplatform for the young minds to enjoy and share theirinnovations in Maths by participating in assorted activities.
