Chuck Hughes, Superintendent Superintendent’s Corner September 2018 Person of the Month: Anna Devitt Anna Devitt is the Athletic Administrative Assistant at the High School. She is a Hartland grad and has worked for Hartland Schools for 26 years. She started at the Hartland Community Education Child Care Center in 1992, then became a special needs paraprofessional at Village and the high school. Her next posi- tion was as an office Paraprofessional at the middle school. She is now in her 20th year as the athletic administrative assistant, which has become the job of her dreams. The following is Anna’s “story” in her own words. I married my high school sweetheart and best friend. My husband Matt and I are celebrating our 41st anniversary this month. We have a long history in Hartland. Matt and I graduated from Hartland, my parents graduated from Hartland in 1955 as did our children, Matt and Mandy. My husband is a U of M graduate. My son Matt is a ’97 Hartland graduate, has a Bachelor’s degree from Michigan Tech University and a Master’s degree from Penn State. My daughter Mandy Mach, a ’99 Hartland graduate, has a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Saginaw Valley State University. I have two wonderful grandchil- dren, Aubri and Addison. A highlight for our family was receiving the Air Force’s “Great American Family Award” presented by President Ronald Reagan. This was an incredible experience and honor. My family is quite involved in the school district. Mandy is a teacher at the high school and a class sponsor. I manage all the workers for the athletic events. Mandy, my son-in-law Joe, Matt and I work at a vast majority of the athletic events at the high school. Since Matt retired, he has worked as the lunchroom monitor at Village Elementary School. I have several memorable moments that involve supporting and watching our athletic teams reach their goals. I was assisting the AD during the wrestling team’s State Championship ring ceremony. When the ceremony was over, as I was shaking hands and giving hugs, the announcer called me to the field where the team presented me with a State Championship ring pendent. I was overwhelmed with emotions. Another was when I was invited to join the hock- ey team and hold the State Championship trophy during their team state photo on the ice. I was thrilled to be included. I am still in Hartland because I have the best job in the whole world. I work with the BEST academic athletes, coaches, trainers, co-op students, parents and Athletic Director. I have Blue and Gold running through my veins. As an Air Force family, we traveled the world, but there was no place like HOME! When Matt retired from the Air Force we knew our children would get the best education if we moved back home to Hartland, and they did. They had some of the same teachers Matt and I had. I LOVE the Hartland com- munity and Hartland Schools. Hartland is the BEST place to raise your children and live a GREAT life. GO EAGLES!!! Starting school prior to Labor Day is a big move for our com- munity. I want to thank everyone for being willing to share how you feel about starting earlier than usual as the information gathered helped in the final decision. I do wish to point out that it was not that long ago when it was normal for school to start prior to Labor Day. As we make this transition, it is important for me to share with you that our high school students need to have every opportunity to participate equally in dual enroll- ment college classes, early middle college classes, and Career Technology Education classes. Starting prior to Labor Day helps tremendously. It is my hope that the district, parents, and students rise to the high level of expectations placed upon us and that we have a wonderful year learning together. Wow! What happened to our hot sum-mer days? Making “Summer Mem-ories” is over ‘til next year. However, looking forward to a beautiful Michi-gan fall is always exciting.

Although summer is a restful time, the “Friends” have been busy! We enjoyed selling used books at both the farm-er’s market and the library’s beautiful summer concerts. We truly appreciate the support we have received from our patrons.

We want to send a thank you to Lisa Moses for the beautiful bookmarks she has made. They are selling by leaps and bounds at Cromaine’s circulation desk. (If you have not purchased one, do buy several for yourself, family and

friends. They make wonderful gifts.)Please check the Cromaine Library page of this month’s Community Life for the dates of our September used book sale and bake sale.

The “Friends” are also happy to inform you that we will be baking festive pies to be sold just before Thanksgiving. This is a lucky break for all the folks worrying about cooking Thanksgiving dinner. We will keep you posted. There is a lot to look forward to.We will see you at the book sale.

Hartland Consolidated Schools 2018-19 School CalendarThe HCS school calendar was not finalized at print time. When the calendar is approved, it will be on the district’s home page. It will also be included in future issues of Community Life. The 2018/2019 school year is quickly approaching. We are looking forward

to another great year! As always, we strive to make your child’s bus ride a positive part of their educational experience. Here are a few important infor-mational points for review: • Your student must be waiting at the bus stop 5 minutes prior to the sched-

uled arrival of the bus. Once the alternating lights of the bus are deactivat-ed, the bus driver cannot legally reactivate them and it is then the parent’s responsibility to transport their student to school.

• Students and Parents should never try to catch the bus once the lights have been canceled. Please do not go to another bus stop without con-tacting the Transportation Office; the bus driver must be notified.

• If possible, your house number should be visible from the traveled road-way; mailbox numbers are acceptable but should be large enough and clearly visible on both sides.

• The expected behavior of the student rider is found in the Parent-Student Handbook. We encourage parents to review these responsibilities with their children to ensure their privilege of riding is not lost. The handbook can be found at: http://www.hartlandschools.us/documents/Departments/Student%20Services/SecondaryHandbook.pdf

• Postcards will be mailed home a week before school starts with your student’s bus information. The computerized postcard will only list one stop address but your student should wait on the same side of the road they reside on until the bus is in place with red lights activated and the bus driver crosses them.

• Students should never cross the road prior to arrival of the bus.

If you have any questions or concerns we would be happy to talk with you. Please contact the Transportation Office at 810-626-2175.

Welcome Back From Hartland Transportation!

The Hartland Consolidated Schools has adopted an Inte-grated Pest Management program. Inherent with this are the District’s efforts to reduce pesticide use as much as possible. While it may occasionally be necessary to apply a pesticide, these will only be used as a last resort. This program does not rely on routine pesticide applications to resolve problems. We use various techniques such as habitat alteration, sanitation, mechanical means, exclu-sion, etc. to prevent pest from becoming a problem.

You will receive advanced notice of the application of a pesticide, other than bait or gel formulations at your child’s school. This advance notice of the application will be given 48 hours before the application. The law

requires us to do this notification by using two methods. The first method required by the law is the posting at the primary entrances to your child’s school. The entranc-es that will be posted are those entrances that have a sidewalk that leads directly to a parking lot. The second method we are going to use is the posting in a common area located by the main office of the school. Parents are also entitled to receive this notice by first-class United States mail postmarked at least 3 days before the ap-plication. If you would like to be notified by mail please contact the Operations Department at (810) 626-2185. Please give the office your name, mailing address and what school your child attends.

In an emergency (for example, bees nest), pesticides may be applied without prior notice, but you will be provided notice following any such application.

You may review our IPM program or pesticide application records for your child’s school by calling or e-mailing Matt Marino the District’s Director of Operations at (810) 626-2185 e-mail at [email protected]. This number or e-mail may also be used when school is not in regular session.

Sincerely,Matt Marino

Director of Operations

Advisory To All Parents Regarding Integrated Pest Management

The Senior All Night Party (SANP) is an event that is solely organized and produced by individual vol-unteers and donations made by many parents and local businesses. A party like this “takes a village” at all levels. We are fortunate to have so many businesses and families that step up and provide their time, money, muscle and imagination to continue this annual tradition for our graduating seniors at Hartland High School. We at the SANP 2018 committee would like to thank all who have given so much and continued to support our kids and community.

Thank you from SNAP–Senior All Night Party

2017-2018 Top Ten Seniors Please note, students are listed in alphabetical order

Student: Elizabeth BreeceParents: Johanna Breece and Donald Breece

Activities and Awards: Elizabeth was a part of National Honors Society, as well as Marching Band and Hartland High School’s Drama Club for all of high school. In the marching band, she was a section leader for the trumpet section and in concert band she played both trumpet and clarinet. In Drama Club, she was on costume crew in which she helped make the costumes for the productions. This was just one outlet for her love for making costumes, the other in the form of making her own intri-cate costumes to wear to conventions. Elizabeth’s biggest influence and motivator in her life has been her sister, as well as herself. Her sister has offered undying friendship through the many hardships they have had to face, but it was Elizabeth herself who had to, in the end, stay strong herself to bring her to this successful point in her life. Elizabeth feels her biggest achievement has been this persistence and staying true to herself. Elizabeth will attend James Madison College at Michigan State University in the fall where she has an interest in studying international relations and English. Her love for English throughout her entire life has had a profound influence on her decision to continue to study it.

Student: Sean MoskaitisParents: Joe and Marilyn Moskaitis

Sean has received numerous awards in math, Spanish and science courses and placed third in KLAA Math and Science Olympics for Algebra 2-Trigonom-etry in 9th grade. He also received the Hartland Leader-to-Leader Award and has earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award two consecutive years. After completing all the available AP courses in math and science at Hartland High School, Sean continued his ed-ucation in physics and calculus at Kettering University. The greatest influences in Sean’s life are his parents who have supported and

encouraged his academic interests. Other important influences include his teachers and counselor at Hart-land High School. Sean will be attending the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to major in Honors Physics.

Student: Nicole F. NelsonParents: Scott and Brenda Nelson

Activities and Awards: Nicole is the President of Project Web, which is a student network that assists teachers in creating and maintaining user-friendly websites. She is the Chief of Operations for Hartland Women in Technology, a club that competes in robotics competitions and brings education and community awareness about technology. Through her example, Mrs. Hasseld has inspired Nicole to be kinder and more generous than she needs to be. Nicole is also extremely active at Tri County Christian Church where she is a Student Minister and has had the opportunity to preach ten sermons. Nicole has been blessed with parents who have instilled in her a strong faith, a curiosity for the world around her, and a dedicated work ethic. They have been her role models and have encouraged her to pursue her dreams and stretch her boundaries. Her twin sister Jennifer has been a constant support and friend. Within five minutes of meeting Nicole, you will find that she is a superhero fanatic; her favorite super-hero is Spider-Man. She will pursue material engineering at Grand Valley State University, after which she will attend Rochester College for Christian Ministry.

Activities and Awards: Zach discovered a true passion and home within Hartland’s choir program. During his senior year, Zach became president of Chamber Choir, the Varsity Men’s Choir, and the student representative at the program’s booster meetings; he started, led, and directed the first-ever large ensemble from Hartland High School that competed at the MSVMA Solo and Ensemble festival. Being the only completely student-directed group to compete, he, along with fellow seniors in Chamber Choir, received a perfect score and laudatory, “life-changing” judge’s comments at the MSMVA District Festival, later advancing to the State Festival that granted them an Excellent with Superior Distinction rating and Michigan Youth Arts Festival Consider-ation. Zach, additionally, participated in National Honor Society, LINK Crew and Drama Club, performing as a lead in this year’s musical, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and is thankful for being able to convey such a beautifully-human, timeless moral. He thanks his friends for their endless support, encouragement, joy, and laughter that they have gifted him. Zach, additionally, would like to thank his family for teaching him strength, courage and perseverance. Emma has also worked as a waitress for the past two years. She would like to thank her parents for encouraging a love of learning and providing her with every opportunity she could have hoped for. She would also like to thank all of her fantastic teachers throughout the years, without whom she would not be where she is today. Emma is a National Merit Finalist and will be attending Michigan State University in the fall as a recipi-ent of the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship, receiving full tuition, room and board and a stipend. Activities and Awards: Ellie was on the varsity track team fresh-man through senior year; she specialized in the pole vault and broke the Hartland High School pole vault record as well as the Livingston county pole vault record her junior year. She is a three time state qualifier and two time regional champion. Outside of track season, Ellie attended Inversion Vault Club, a pole vault club through which she participated in indoor track meets. Excluding track, one of Ellie’s favorite pastimes is reading. She spends way too much time and money at the bookstore, knowing full well that her funds would be better used towards college but unable to resist the temptation of new books. Throughout the duration of high school, Ellie’s family has served as her encouragement, her support and her refuge. Her family’s unconditional love has equipped her with the ability to think for herself and figure out who she is as a young individual in a world of adults. Her friends have also helped shape her in ways that she could not have antic-ipated at the beginning of freshman year. With their endless acceptance and loyalty, Ellie’s friends have helped her become the person that she is today.

Led by French teachers Mrs. Kathleen Hoerauf and Mrs. Kathleen Shipley, Hartland French IV and V classes trav-eled to Paris, France for a 6-day experi-ence. Students immersed themselves in French culture and visited some of the world’s most historic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. Thank you to Mrs. Szabo and Mrs. Bulszewicz for chaperoning a great group of HHS students. What a fantastic trip!

From the Counseling Office

Hartland seniors are encouraged to use their time over the summer vacation to make sure they are ready for the college application season. Most colleges have their ap-plications available online on August 1st. In order to apply for admission seniors must:1. Complete the online college application and follow all

steps outlined by the specific application.2. Request that Hartland HS send your official transcript

by creating a www.parchment.com account and completing an online transcript request. Students who are well organized and planning ahead can make transcript requests in August. However, seniors should note that the HS Counseling Office will not begin processing transcript requests until the second week of school.

3. Submit all necessary payment.4. Monitor your application on through your account

on the college website to make sure that all parts of your electronic application were received and down-loaded in a timely manner.

5. Let you counselor know when you are accepted. Once you have completed all of applications, seniors are able to move on to complete their financial aid applica-tions (FAFSA) in October, which is much earlier than in past years. This earlier filing deadline will allow families to use their 2017 tax documents to apply for financial aid, rather than waiting until January for their 2018 tax documents.

Finally, seniors can begin the process of researching scholarship opportunities. There are numerous online search engines for scholarships that can be particularly helpful. In addition, the counseling office will email you with a monthly newsletter filled with scholarship oppor-tunities. Seniors who have use their summer wisely and have completed their applications early in the fall are far less stressed and have more time to devote to searching for scholarship dollars!

In early June, the HHS Varsity Softball team made an amazing run in the state softball tour-nament held at Spartan Stadium in Lansing. The girl’s team placed 2nd, falling to Caledonia in the championship game. Congratulations on a great season!

HHS is happy to announce we new hires! Welcome Ms. Nicole Lusk to our counseling department, Ms. Erin Korson in our art department and Ms. Hannah Goodell to our special education department.

Welcome back to all of our students! Looking ahead, Homecoming 2018 is quickly approaching! September 24th–28th is Hartland’s Homecoming week. The Powder Puff game is on Wednesday 9/26 and the football game Friday (9/28) at 7 PM vs. Plymouth. The Homecoming dance will be held at HHS on Saturday, September 29th.

Cross Country and Girls Volleyball seasons start at the beginning of the school year. Students planning on partici-pating in any school sports team or club this year must have a current physical (dated after April 15, 2018) on file in the Middle School office in order to participate. Forms are available in the Middle School office and on our school web page. There is a participation fee for interscholastic sports and school sponsored clubs. A one-time $100 fee will allow students to participate in any school team and/or club for which they otherwise qualify. This one-time fee covers all school sponsored sports and club participation fees throughout the year.

Parent Connect: Parent Connect allows parents with Internet access to monitor their children’s grades. If you had a password assigned last year, it remains the same. Contact [email protected] for assistance.

Phone Messages To Students In School: It can be very disruptive to call students out of class to deliver routine messages. Please make every effort to communicate after school plans with students before they begin their school day. We appreciate your help in keeping our school the best learning environment possible.

Safety In The Parking Lot: The morning “drop off” time before school and afternoon “pick up” time after school means that students who are being driven to and from school must negotiate a very busy parking lot. PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY AND CAUTIOUSLY and put the safety of our students ahead of time issues.

Parent E-Mails: We will be making regular (usually weekly) mass e-mails with news and updates. If you do not have Internet access, you or your child may pick up a hard copy of the weekly parent/guardian e-mail in the school office. Please be sure your e-mail address is up to date.

Tardy To School Policy: Please help your child do his or her best. Attendance is a crucial factor for student aca-demic success. Students tardy to school (i.e. late to Homeroom) must be signed in at the front office by a parent or legal guardian in order for the tardy to be considered excused. Unexcused tardies to school will result in disciplinary action. Excessive parent excused tardies may be referred to the Livingston County Attendance Officer.

We have been busy interviewing teaching candidates throughout the summer and would like to welcome three new staff to Creekside. Hartland graduate Masyn Rocca will be teaching Kindergarten, Natalie Moulton will be teaching 1st grade and Katherine Hagar will be our new music teacher. Each were very impressive during the interview process and have connections to Hartland Schools. We are excited to have such high caliber teachers join our staff!

Thank you to all of our Lakes family who supported and made our first Meals for Mott a huge success! We provided lunch for the Pediatric Cancer unit, floor 7E, on July 9th. We provid-ed 50 bagged lunches with all of the fixings from Zingerman’s, as well as 100 slices of pizza from Pizza house, and 50 slices of pie from the Grand Traverse Pie Company. Thank you LES Parent Mr. Jim Staron! Extra “Hartland strong for Mott” t-shirts and bracelets were given away and we also donated 55 extra Superhero capes to the Child and Family Life Center! Thank you so much to Lakes Teacher Matt Conway for all of his dedication and hard work with this program!

LOC Federal Credit Union and Lakes Elementary School are excited to be starting their 2nd year of partnership with Student Run Credit Union pro-gram. Lakes first year of the SRCU program was very successful, 55 fourth grade students participated as employees and opened over 52 new youth savings accounts. The success of the program is based on the participation of the student employees and depositors receiving hands on experience while gaining important life skills at an early age. This upcoming school year the student-run credit union will be open every Thursday beginning in early October. Students, parents, and staff continue to open or utilize existing personal savings account and conduct transactions under the close super-vision of an LOC Federal Credit Union employee in the Health Room.

Thank you to all of our Lakes students and families who came out for Lakes Reading Night at Cromaine Library on June 25. Mrs. Jagusch and Principal Howerton enjoyed reading to the many students who showed up. Another thank you to Mrs. Marta Jack-son and the entire Cromaine staff for their wonderful summer youth reading programs that many of our students took part in over the summer.

Lakes Open HouseLakes will be providing a “before-school-starts” Open House for our JK and Kinder-garten students from 5-6 PM on Wednesday, August 22. Our 1st–4th grade Open House will also be on Aug. 22nd from 6–7 PM. This will be an opportunity to bring your students into the school before the first day to meet their teacher and locate their classroom. We appreciate 1st-4th grade families waiting until 6 PM to come into the building. This allows our JK and Kindergarten students the opportunity to see their new school and visit with their teachers without too much congestion in the building. You will receive an e-mail from me in August before the Open House concerning teacher assignments for the new school year, as well as other important information to know before the first day. Looking forward to a great year!

Teaching The Skills For TomorrowRound Elementary School would like to welcome everyone back for another amaz-ing school year! Round teachers have been very busy preparing this summer. We are excited for the students to arrive!

Last school year our students and staff experienced and accomplished many new and wonderful things. This year we plan on pushing forward with our vision to make Round the best it can be. We continue to develop our E.A.G.L.E.S. social-emotional learning plan this year. Our focus with Sensei will be the development of positive empathetic relationships, courage and developing the character to become a Type 1 person. Last year, we had two training themes: “I always stand up for myself and others” (Courage) and “I always do a little more than I am asked to do (Type 1 behavior)”. Facing fears and over-coming challenges are very important to life-long success. Developing expertise in the areas of Empathy, Achievement, Grit, Links (re-lationships), Empowerment (leadership), and Serve (service) are critical to success in life. Please look for more information in future newsletters and community life issues.

We would like to wish our Round fourth grade students the best of luck as they move on to 5th grade at Farms this fall. We wish you well and we will miss you!

Round Elementary School is a special place. We are committed to educational ex-cellence, quality relationships and the development of great citizens. Welcome back Round School family. We have missed you all very much. We look forward to another wonderful year together!

What is Hartland SOUP? It is a community funded micro-grant dinner for ideas and startups. Or as our logo says: Eat. Connect. Vote. Fund. tasty crowdfunding. On July 19, Vanessa LeBlanc won $770 for her Summer Book Shopping Program at Creekside Elementary School. Her goal is to acquire 9,000 books before the end of school in 2019 to help prevent summer slide, especially with reading skills. Are you inspired to get involved with SOUP? There are several different ways. Follow us on Facebook @HartSOUP, RSVP at http://bit.ly/OctoberSOUP to attend the October 3 SOUP at Hartland United Methodist Church or pay the $5 for dinner and change some-one’s life with your vote. Want to go beyond that? Step up to volunteer at the SOUP or better yet, volunteer to donate soup, salad, bread or dessert! We are always looking for locations to host the event as well–currently we’re hosting approximately 75 people, but we would love to see it get as high as 100! Are you really, really inspired? Submit a proposal to http://bit.ly/SOUPproposalform, or at the very least, encourage the friend, co-worker, or neighbor that keeps talking about their dream to submit a proposal. Email SOUP at [email protected] with ques-tions or to volunteer!

In the 15 years of running our school we are seeing more and more children with anxiety and it is heartbreaking. And I just don’t mean they are a little nervous or anxious at times. No, I am talking about having such intense and constant anxiety it is debilitating. They can barely get out of the house. Many end up having to resort to medication.

While anxiety can have hereditary or medical causes I believe it is becoming more and more self-inflicted. Anxiety is characterized by a “feeling of worry or fear strong enough to interfere with one’s daily activities”. Anxiety are not your big fears like a fire or sharks. They are something much more sinister and destructive. They are your small fears. Most do not perceive these as fears because they are too small. I like teach people anytime you hesitate, over think something, or second guess yourself it is really a fear. Often anxiety starts with some experience or event that scares you. Like a death of a relative or pet, or maybe a fear of snakes or flying, or a car accident or illness. This causes a natural self-defense mechanism to go into effect to protect you – fear. Fear causes either the “Fight or Flight” reaction.

This reaction can be good except for one thing, our brains see all fears as the same! When you become scared by one fear you tend to become more sensitive to all your fears. Then your actions are validated by you and others. You tell yourself “See I was right, that was scary and dangerous.” You are also validated by others. For example a mother saying “Oh Billy, that was so scary, I am glad saved you, my poor baby.” Then as all your fears get bigger and your reaction stronger you spiral downward until every little thing scares or worries you.

What are the things that contribute to self-inflicted anxiety and are they worse today? I believe that are three:

1. Pressure and expectations: Life is tougher and harder on kid’s today. School, sports, from parents, from peers. Try to back off (in a balanced way). When they are young, just let them be kids for as long as you can! What ruins sports for most kids? The ride home.

2. Overprotective parents: All parents mean well but most do not realize protecting their kids from too much actually does the opposite. When a child always has an adult saving them from fears and protecting them they fail to develop both confidence and courage. They become fearful and weak children. You know my favorite saying “When I back away from a

fear the fear gets bigger, but when I power through a fear I get bigger!” So never let them back away from a fear ever!

3. A paranoid world: One thing I often do when talking with a parent about their anxious child is ask “Does anyone else in the family struggle with anxiety?” You can probably guess the answer. It is not your fault. We are developing an overly paranoid world. Just watch the news (actually turn it off!). The world is scared of everything. We are scared of our kids being abducted. Scared of that storm of the century that happens every other week. Scared of North Korea bombing us. Scared of school shootings. Is there any wonder why we are an increasingly “scared” and paranoid society? How do you counter this? First become more aware of how scared we are and how unjustified it is. Then “de-scare” yourself first so you can de-scare your child!

ANXIETYAre you starting to see signs in your child?
