STEREOCARD COLLECTIONS 1 STEREOCARD COLLECTIONS FROM THE OSTENDORF AND LINCOLN NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTIONS 2 boxes Historical Note Stereocards were two nearly identical photographs pasted side by side on a rectangular piece of cardboard or other stiff-backed material. Although the difference is hardly noticeable to the viewer, one image is from a slightly different angle than the other. The photographs were taken at the same time with a camera with dual lenses placed about two inches apart. The idea behind the placement of the lenses two inches apart was to simulate the distance between the pupils of the eyes. The card is placed in what is called a stereoscope to be viewed. 1 This was a very popular form of entertainment in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries. Stereoscopes and stereocards first gained their popularity at the British Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851. Queen Victoria was so impressed by the stereoscope that she owned one herself. 2 To view a stereocard in a three-dimensional way, one had to place the card in a stereoscope. Also known as a stereopticon, stereograph, or stereo viewer, the stereoscope was designed by Sir Charles Wheatstone. Wheatstone, a British physicist, realized the eyes took in two images from slightly different angles, combined the angles in the brain, and created a three- dimensional image. Wheatstone’s stereoscope used mirrors that reflected two separate two- dimensional images at two different angles into the viewer’s eyes. Once the images converged in the brain, the item appeared as a single three-dimensional figure to the viewer. 3 Oliver Wendell Holmes revised Wheatstone’s cumbersome and difficult to use mirrored device into a handheld piece of equipment. Holmes’ version of the stereoscope consisted of a mask that was held up to the face. This mask, with two openings for the eyes to look through, had a long piece of wood extended from the middle. On this piece of wood was a sliding tray on which a stereocard was placed. Each eyehole would allow the individual eye to focus on the photograph on that same side. The sliding tray would be moved by the viewer until the objects on the stereocard came into focus, thus creating a single three-dimensional image out of two separate two-dimensional photographs. By doing this, Holmes transformed the stereoscope into a small, affordable item that many middle-class families could purchase and enjoy. 4 (See figure 1.) STEREOCARD COLLECTIONS 1

STEREOCARD COLLECTIONS FROM THE OSTENDORF AND LINCOLN NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTIONS 2 boxes Historical Note Stereocards were two nearly identical photographs pasted side by side on a rectangular piece of cardboard or other stiff-backed material. The card is placed in what is called a stereoscope to be viewed.1 This was a very popular form of entertainment in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Stereoscopes and stereocards first gained their popularity at the British Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851. Queen Victoria was so impressed by the stereoscope that she owned one herself.2

To view a stereocard in a three-dimensional way, one had to place the card in a stereoscope. Also known as a stereopticon, stereograph, or stereo viewer, the stereoscope was designed by Sir Charles Wheatstone. Wheatstone, a British physicist, realized the eyes took in two images from slightly different angles, combined the angles in the brain, and created a three-dimensional image. Wheatstone’s stereoscope used mirrors that reflected two separate two-dimensional images at two different angles into the viewer’s eyes. Once the images converged in the brain, the item appeared as a single three-dimensional figure to the viewer.3

Oliver Wendell Holmes revised Wheatstone’s cumbersome and difficult to use mirrored device into a handheld piece of equipment. By doing this, Holmes transformed the stereoscope into a small, affordable item that many middle-class families could purchase and enjoy.4 (See figure 1.)

STEREOCARD COLLECTIONS 2

The cards used for Holmes’ stereoscope came in a wide range of sizes, but the consistent size of the cards was close to seven inches by four inches. Sometimes ‘warped’ cards are found, especially in the late 1800s. It was believed that this curving of the card would “increase the sense of depth” to the photographs presented. Mass production of the cards took off in the 1880s, with larger companies producing millions of cards a year. Within the United States alone, it is believed there were around 12,000 individual companies making stereocards. The large number of producers and the large output of stereocards are evidence of their appeal. At the height of their popularity, six stereocards could be purchased for a dollar. These cards were often purchased either at publishers’ studios or from traveling salesmen.5 (See figure 2.)

Figure 2. - stereocard

Subject matter of the cards included scenes of “exotic and faraway” places like Egypt and

Asia. The stereoscopic image allowed viewers to travel across the globe and experience unique scenery not otherwise available to them. Scenery, however, was not the only popular topic of stereocards. Artwork, landmarks, and famous buildings were also popular. Series of pictures also developed, providing several photographs of the same subject, such as the interior of a presidential home or sights from a city. Captions were often added to the card describing when and where the photograph was taken, or explaining what was going on in the images. Regardless of the topic of the image, stereocards provided the viewer with an experience in much the same way television and the internet do in the 21st century. 6

Scope and Content

Lincoln himself posed for stereoscopic images. He did so for Mathew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and Thomas Walker.7 The collection of stereocards owned by Lincoln Financial Foundation includes over 300 stereocards of various topics from the Ostendorf and Lincoln National collections. Images on the cards include a wide range of subjects in addition to Lincoln portraits, such as Abraham Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Lincoln’s national funeral procession, several government buildings in Washington, D.C., and various Civil War scenes. The scenes can be attributed (but not limited) to such photographers as Brady, Gardner, James F. Gibson, Walker, and photographers from the E.& H.T. Anthony and Keystone View Companies.

There are two major groups that make up the Lincoln Financial Foundation’s complete stereocard collection. The first group is part of the Ostendorf Collection. The Ostendorf stereocard collection comprises 83 stereocards. The cards are individually numbered OC-279, OC-0281 through OC-0352, and OC-0363 through OC-0374. Scenes depicted in the stereocards from this collection include portraits of Lincoln, commemorative sculpture, the funeral procession of Lincoln, and government buildings in Washington, D.C.

STEREOCARD COLLECTIONS 3

The second group of stereocards is from the Lincoln National Collection and comprises 230 Lincoln National stereocards. The Lincoln National stereocard collection is numbered LN-0001 through LN-0231. Subject matter covered by the stereocards from the Lincoln National Collection includes Abraham Lincoln portraits, Civil War ordnance and battle casualties, Washington, D.C. government buildings, commemorative sculpture, Lincoln’s funeral procession, skeleton leaves honoring assassinated presidents, and the National Lincoln Monument and vault.

The stereocard collections are housed in two stereocard boxes. Box 1 contains the Ostendorf stereocard collection. Box 2 contains the Lincoln National stereocards.
