IN T R O D U C T IO N

For the compilation o f the Newspaper Article Index 2000 January-M arch (English), 2 daily

Newspapers namely the Ceylon Daily News and the Island and 3 weekend newspapers

nam ely the Sunday Observer, Sunday Island and Sunday Times have been selected. All the

articles appeared in the newspapers were indexed according to the Anglo - American

Cataloguing Rules 2nd edition (AACR II). Subject classification is mainly based on the 20th

edition o f the Dewey Decimal Classification and words in the current usage are used as• •

subject headings in relation to the appropriate subjects. Entries are arranged according to

alphabetical order under each subject.

W hen one author has written several articles on the same topic with number o f parts, the

entries are arranged according to the numerical sequence. When an author publishes articles

on one topic without mentioning the parts, tj ie entries are arranged in chronological order.

There are some article topics which do not give a clear understanding about the content. In

such cases, a short note about the article is given at the end o f the entry.

This index consists o f 890 entries and each entry contains the basic bibliographical

information - author, title o f the article, name o f the newspaper, year, m onth and date, page

number, column number and notes where necessary.
