President’s Updateby Lyn Perez - Club President

2013 was a good year for the Florida Citrus Porsche Club and we salute our past President Steve William-son for his three years of service to our club. During this year there were plenty of activities for everyone. In addition to the Rolex 24 Hours, 12 Hours of Se-bring, PCA Club races at Daytona and Sebring, HSR and SVRA races where our members both volun-teer and participate, we had many drives and social events where club members could be involved. There were two tours to Jacksonville and the Brumo’s mu-seum with dinner on the beach, the drives with the Crown Region to Homosassa Springs and to the NC Mountains, Zonefest with Goldcoast Region celebrat-ing their 50th Anniversary in Sebring, Sunrise to Sun-set with Space Coast Region as well as the annual fa-vorite, the Challenge Rally through Central Florida in support of the Russell Home. Also, FLC had a full schedule of Auto Crosses at both the Lake County Sheriffs facilities and the Orange County Convention Center, two Drivers Education events at Roebling Road, one DE at Daytona and a special seminar program at Zotz Racing to introduce Drivers Education to new drivers interested in learn-ing how to become involved. Many of our members also attended, and do so each year, the multiple track events in Sebring with the Suncoast Region PCA. And if all that did not meet your social needs, there was the Holiday Party, Oktoberfest, the Chili Cook off, the Le Mans Kick Off Breakfast, Millennia Motors Dyno Day , plenty of Cars and Coffee’s sponsored by Gary Meredith and 12 monthly meetings, after which we all went to dinner together. We look ahead this year to many of the same activities but with the addition of two very important events. The first is the celebration of the Florida Citrus Re-gions 40th Anniversary. We will celebrate our found-ing as part of the Zonefest 2014 , where we return to Mount Dora and the Lakeside Inn. There will be plen-ty of activities for everyone including opportunities for the “old folks” to reminisce about the clubs early years as they rock in rocking chairs on the front porch of the Lakeside Inn : - ). It will be a delight to hear the stories. At the concluding banquet we will honor all of our past Presidents who have served our club so well these forty years.

Then later in the year we will host, in conjunction with the Space Coast Region Porsche Club, the “ 2014 Escape to Magi-cal Orlando”. This is a big event and will provide lots of opportunities for fun, fellow-ship and volunteer service to our guests. We expect a minimum of 300 cars to descend on the Coronado Resort at Disney World on November 5-9 for four days of driving tours around Central and South Florida. Please make arrangements now to be available to volunteer on those days. If you have ideas for activities or social events and would like to organize one of our drive and dine tours during the year, please Lisa Lewis or me know. Also, as a new President, I am interested in hearing from you and how our club might better serve you and our other members so feel free to give me call or send me an email with your ideas and suggestions. A blonde decided she needed to make some extra money... so she took up her paint brush and canvases the wealthy neighbor-hoods in her town. She soon came upon a very large home, knocked on the front door and asked the owner if he needed some painting done around the house. Thinking that the porch could use a coat of paint, the home owner asked what she would charge. The response was $50. He realized that $50 was such a good deal since the porch en-circled the entire house and told her that there was paint and a ladder in the garage. Retiring to the den with his wife, he was sur-prised to hear a knock on the door sooner than expected. On answering he found the blonde saying the job was finished. While the owner reached into his pocket for the cash, the blonde said “by the way, it wasn’t a porch, it was a Ferrari.”

2013 Holiday Partyby Chuck Henningsphoto by Bill Kent

The year end Holiday Party was held at 301 Lakeside, a downtown eatery on the shores of Lake Eola which was previously a Sam Snead’s. A good crowd of Citrus members and a few guests enjoyed conversation on the ‘veranda’ before comingin to partake of a great meal and a few remarks from several speakers.

On the National level, guests included David O’Neal, Zone 12 Rep and wife Ginny O’Neal who is now Na-tional Awards Chair. Both are SpaceCoast members and longtime friends of manymembers of the Citrus Region. Lou Linden, now Presi-dent of SpaceCoast and Escape 2014 Coordinator was also in attendance. In November of 2014 Space Coast and our Florida Citrus Region are jointly host-ing Escape to Magical Orlando at the Disney Corona-do Springs Resort.

Our outgoing President Steve Williamson presented the Enthusiast of the Year award to Lisa Lewis, Club Vice President. She not only made significant efforts in guiding Club activitiesbut has become an avid DE participant. Lyn Perez, in-coming President, presented a Porsche 50th Anniver-sary 911 jacket to Steve as a thank you for his serving as President for 3 years. All three are pictured below with Lyn in the foreground.

Bert DelVillano, AutoCross Chair, spoke about the La-dies Day/AutoCross Challenge and ‘pending results’. Seems that Bert,as Chair, is very focused on ensuring that Citrus was the winner! Several Martin Sports Car Club members were at the dinner and Bert gave them a huge thank you for making our AutoCross events possible. How-ever, the thank you was not without a little zing about the difficulty of the Martin course layout for the Challenge.

All in all, another special evening catching up with friends and fellow enthusiasts and families. A special thank you to Anne Delvillano [and Bert] who helped organize this and so manyother Club events.

In a new book, Porsche 911: 50 Years, bestselling author Randy Leffingwell celebrates a half-century of one of the world’s premiere sports cars, focusing on the major themes that have defined Porsche’s rear-engined wonder. He tells the whole story—design and development, racing and competition, engineering and technology, style and culture. All the iconic 911 models are included, but beyond telling the story of the cars, this book also spot-lights the people behind them. Together, all of these facets make Porsche 911: 50 Years the most essential book in any Porsche fan’s library.

Challenge Rally

by Bill Davisphotos by Bill Kent

The 2014 Challenge Rally benefiting the Russell Home for Atypical Children was held on November 17th. A total for 46 cars with driver and navigator gathered at Porsche of Orlando to register and to receive their Rally instructions. Coffee, donuts and bagels were provided by Mike Colon and Millennia Motors.

As the cars were lining up all the way around the building, everyone received ballots for to select a people’s choice for the most attractive or interest-ing automobile. That people’s choice award went to Karim Rahemtulla and his 1965 356 C.

The first car left the parking lot to begin the Rally just before 11:00 a.m. The drive took a route through the back roads finally leading the pack to the Public Li-brary in Umatilla as a half-way point and a brief rest stop.

Then after another hour of driving and gathering clues the final destination was the Swamp House Grille in Debary were all the cars began lining up at about 1:30 along the seawall of the waterfront for a perfect Photo OP of an Old Central Florida scene – the St. John’s River, laurel oaks and palm trees.

Congratulations to the winner of the Rally Chris Brooke who had only four clues incorrect.

Tracking Outby Chuck Hennings

Many Citrus Region members are experiencing Driv-ers Education [DE] for the first time and learning how to really enjoy their Porsches and their capabilities. There is also a group of members who have moved up to the next level and race Porsches.

We have members running in events of many organi-zations including PCA Club Racing, Historic Sportscar Racing [HSR], Sportscar Vintage Racing Association [SVRA], Sportscar Club of America [SCCA] and PBOC Motorsports Club. There are many classes and you can run your 356 or GT3RS against other Porsches and other makes.

Sid Collins, who owns Troysport, one of our advertis-ers, supports several members in preparing and sup-porting their racecars and also races his 356 and 911 in SCCA events.

Mark Peebles, Greg Barrows and David Edwards and others run the PCA Club races and are frequent par-ticipants at the February and October DEs.

Ron Zitza owns Zotz Racing, another Spiel advertiser and also prepares and maintains race cars. I asked Ron to help me identify folks he supports and they include Doug Miller, Randy Proudfit, Steven St John, Stuart Fain, Brad Blum, Tom Briest, David Edwards, Bob Bailey, Cannon Bailey, Ron Canty, Brian Anderson, Jeff Mitchell, Ron Branom, Kevin and Rita Brackett, Mark and Diana Kessler, Danny Burnstein, Linden Burnstein, Rob Blake, Tom Kirk, Tom King, Eduardo Baptista, An-drew Burke, Ron Howard, Gregg Frey, Richard Sneed, Randy Zomermaand and Nort Northam.

Currently the Citrus Region Director of Instructor Training, Ron has raced at all levels including a class win in the 24 Hours of Daytona. At the recent year end HSR event at Sebring, Ron and co-driver Doug Miller won the Historic Enduro Series championship [see photo, Ron on the left] winning every race of the 2013 HSR season. Doug Miller finished second in the sprint series and was named the most improved Driver for 2013. In the Four hour race Jeff Mitchell and co-driver Ron Branom finished fifth overall out of fifty five cars and were first in the Historic Group. Tom Bri-est and Eduardo Baptista finished second and third in the classic GT group.

Preparations for the 2014 racing season are under-way. Nort Northam, Spiel advertiser and frequent race winner, will be running his 924S at the first PCA race the end of January. Stay tuned!

Well not really a barn find, but a shed find.

I got a call from a former PCA member from the 70’s a few weeks ago who I remembered. He said he had his old Porsche in a shed on his rural property about 8 miles SW of Daytona Speedway in what we can only refer to as a pine swamp.

The 1970 pastel blue 911T coupe had been parked under the collapsing shed about 18 years ago and not started since. Surface rust, dirt, and mold have managed to pre-serve the body and original interior. The floorpan is perfect except for a small hole around the pedals.

We intend to clean it up and try to bring the engine back to life. I probably will let the next owner do the restoration. The tools, serive records, and original window sticker were in the trunk.

Porsche Macan

Stuttgart.

Porsche is expanding its range to include a whole new class of vehicle. The Macan is the first Porsche model to break into the compact SUV segment and is poised to set new standards in the field of driving dynamics and enjoyment – on both paved streets uneven ter-rain. The Macan combines the typical handling char-acteristics that Porsche has represented right from the outset: maximum acceleration and braking val-ues, vast engine power, extreme agility and optimum steering precision. What’s more, all of these features are teamed with a high level of comfort and everyday suitability. The sporty DNA of the Macan, as with all Porsche vehicles, is also immediately recognisable in the design. The Sports Utility Vehicle is unrivalled in its flat and broad profile on the road. The wraparound bonnet and gently sloping roof line accentuate the overall impression of sporty elegance and powerful dynamics. Many of the design elements have been taken from other Porsche sportscars and enhanced for the Macan, making it clear to see from the very first glance that the Porsche Macan heralds the first sportscar in the compact SUV segment. The Macan

is “Made in Germany”, produced at the Leipzig plant. Porsche has invested 500 million euro in the plant and has established an entire production line there. The line is set up to produce around 50,000 vehicles per year – all manufactured with the utmost preci-sion and to the highest level of quality. Just what you would expect from Porsche.

Three models comprise the Macan product range at market launch. The Macan S1) is equipped with a 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine delivering 340 bhp (250 kW) and also features an active all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled, map-controlled multi-plate clutch. This all-wheel drive is fitted on all Macan models. A seven-speed double-clutch transmission transfers power as required and almost without any interruption in tractive force, enabling the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds (or 5.2 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package fit-ted). The vehicle reaches a top speed of 254 km/h, and its NEDC*) fuel consumption figures are between 9.0 and 8.7 litres/100 km, which corresponds to a CO2 emissions level of between 212 and 204 g/km.

The Macan S Diesel2) is the economical long-distance runner of the three Macan models. Its 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel engine achieves NEDC*) fuel consump-tion figures of between just 6.3 and 6.1 litres/100 km, which corresponds to a CO2 value of between 164 and 159 g/km. Nevertheless, the Macan S Diesel accelerates from 0 to 100 km in just 6.3 seconds (or 6.1 seconds with the Sport Chrono package fitted) thanks to its 258-bhp (190-kW) engine, and achieves a top speed of 230 km/h.

As the top model in the Macan model line, the Macan Turbo3) is set to be the most powerful vehicle in the compact SUV segment. The 3.6-litre V6 biturbo en-gine, which is being used in a Porsche model for the very first time, achieves an unrivalled 400 bhp (294 kW) and catapults the vehicle from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. With the Sport Chrono package fitted, it is even possible to achieve such a speed in 4.6 sec-onds. Although the top speed is 266 km/h, the Macan Turbo delivers NEDC*) fuel consumption figures of between just 9.2 and 8.9 litres/100 km, which equates to a CO2 value of between 216 and 208 g/km.

Its name comes from the Indonesian word for tiger. And the Macan really does live up to its name: power-ful and ready to pounce at any time, yet light-footed and tenacious on off-road terrain. The latest stage of

evolution of the all-wheel drive – known as Porsche Traction Management (PTM) – has produced one of the world’s most powerful drive systems. In launching the Macan, Porsche now offers sporty all-wheel-drive vehicles across an unprecedented range.

A glance at the performance specifications reveals that the Macan has been designed with agility in mind. Further unmistakeable hallmarks of the vehicle include its proportions, de sign and the mixed tyres on large wheels. The engines, drive systems and sev-en-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) bring the vehicle’s characteristics to bear in dynamic and effi-cient fashion both on and off road, making for a true Porsche driving experience. The driver and passenger seats feature the low position typical of sportscars.

The range of equipment fitted on the Macan as stan-dard is extensive, and includes the all-wheel drive, PDK, multi-function sport steering wheel with shift paddles, large wheels, high-performance audio sys-tem and an electrically operated tailgate. The list of optional special equipment offers further highlights, such as the air suspension system, which the Macan features as the only vehicle in its segment. There is also the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) sys-tem, which has been specially tailored to the Macan. This system distributes varying levels of drive torque

to the rear wheels and works in con-junction with an e l e c t r o n i c a l l y controlled rear-axle differential lock. The list of Porsche options includes the much sought-after dynamic high beam form-ing part of the Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus), which continu-ously adjusts the headlight level in keeping with the traffic ahead and any oncoming traffic.
